100 years and 2 days on, Celtic aim for another record

390

Fate intervenes in football regularly. Friday, 21 April, marks the 100th anniversary of Celtic’s UK record of 62 league games unbeaten finally ending. Willie Maley’s team won 49 of the 62 games, but took their eye off the ball on the second last game of a long season, at home to Kilmarnock.

The run stood as a European record for 70 years until the great Steaua Bucharest European Cup winning team eclipsed it.

While we will remember one of the early great Celtic teams, with Patsy Gallacher, Alec McNair and Jimmy McMenemy, thoughts inevitably turn to the tantalising prospect of an unbeaten record which would be just as incredible – that of an invincible domestic treble.

100 years and two days after Maley’s team’s great run came to an end, Brendan Rodgers’ team put their aspirations on the line in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden. The weight of history will not burden Brendan or the players, but Sunday is a great opportunity to mark the passing of one incredible record by setting your sights on another.

Great records happen at Celtic. It’s time for another one.

I’ve no axe to grind with Dundee one way or another. Completely understood the decision to sack Paul Hartley. Whatever was going on, the prospect of relegation after losing a play-off against Dundee United was looming large, but good grief, appointing a rookie from the television!

Apart from saying, “Don’t take tax advice from an adult film producer”, I can’t imagine what else he will tell the players with any authority.

  1. I see Schalk has been banned for two games but there is no compensation for Celtic. If he is a regular starter for Ross County, then Motherwell and ICT are the beneficiaries whilst RC lose out further by his absence but Celtic remain cheated out of two points. That it was relatively insignificant this time is irrelevant. The victims of these actions should have redress.

    Cheerio for now,

  3. Had Schalk been booked, as he should have been, his points accumulation would have meant a 2 match ban. He has not been punished for blatant dive, he’s got the two matches he was due had the referee been in anyway competent.

  4. Barcelona in their prime were fabulous to watch but got a lesson in how to defend last night, in fact if Juventus had a wee bit more ambition could well have won the game but played very well.

Best team in the world no more that is for sure, need two full backs and a centre half along with at least one midfield player to replace Iniesta and probably also Rakatic.

Virgil Van Dijk would improve them for sure, they must be looking at him or they are crazy.

I think BRTHs analogy if he means the CW trial and forthcoming SC Decision are in the wind is about right.

I haven’t seen any posts from Canalamar to comment but the case was left with Celtic to pursue mindful of the court cases.

Nothing has changed on that front.

    Re juhnino ebt

From my reading the catchword with hmrc is engagement….at all times

Juhninos ebt was initiated at Middlesbro when he signed there

    Juhnino then moved to Celtic

Celtic engaged with hmrc, taking advice from them every step of the way until juhnino moved onto his next club.

Celtic followed advice and direction from Hector at.all times.

In this simple example the contrast on how both Celtic and the dead club behaved is there to see.

    TJEY DIED BECAUSE THEY LIED

and the dos tale is one particular strand.

    Openness against Obfuscation/avoidance

Taking dirction from hmrc against duping hector

Responsibility to the wider community against sucking funds out public purse.

In my own opinion well dressed skanks like David Murray dont happen to come on these tax ruses

Like the ebts coming after the discount option schems

    WHAT DID THE D.O.S replace?

hateley, steven, stevens, and many more were paid “offshore”

Do you think Murray started cheating at ebts?

    @ d.o.s?

    …..na me neither

Thats why imo Murrays whole reign) is under question with the SC decision

    Hail Hail

Ps prior to Malmo game last year I met Brian Quinn coming of Lonfon Train

We talked of forthoming game etc

I then said I would like to thank him for his actions re juhnino, I got the warmest of smiles of him as we shook hands.

    God bless Celtic

Re Res 12 – I can’t go into this in too much detail mostly for time reasons but I speak to Auldheid weekly about this and due to other commitments I am somewhat behind in my latest submissions and e-mails to the club regarding the detail of recent events and how they impact on our approach and line of enquiry ……… and it is important to note that WE do have an approach and further lines of enquiry to pursue.

Celtic know what the position is and also know the line of enquiry to follow, where to take those lines of enquiry and when would be the best time to push these matters further.

A recent reply to another poster from JP Taylor may well point to the direction that Celtic are travelling along at the moment.

Meanwhile, in between everything else I have been studying the detail of the LNS decision, the arguments put forward by Rod MacKenzie for the SPL (at the time) and the correspondence from some individual clubs following upon their being informed of the detail of that decision.

Taken together, the information makes for interesting reading in terms of determining the then attitude of the clubs in the league and those who run them.

In my opinion, the much ridiculed LNS decision and the deriseable punsihment which followed, may well yet prove to be a weapon and as much a crucial piece of evidence as you will find in this whole farago.

Meanwhile, a whole host of other things carry on at a steady and inevitable pace like an ever turning wheel and with each turn an almost Gordian Knot tightens and tightens. Legend has it that Alexander the Great solved the age old mystery of the Gordian knot but the fact remains that taking certain steps to release the current knot and free and release Scottish Football from its obvious consequences are, in my opinion, inevitable and at least one person from within Celtic Park has expressed the same opinion.

Anyone who chooses to study the correspondence to and from UEFA and the court cases which have been decided since 2011 will see that the golf ball is slowly rolling towards the SFA hole and in the event of it going in (likely) then the score on that particular hole is neither in doubt nor changeable.

  10. Premier League clubs posted record revenues of £3.6bn in 2015-16, but still struggled to make a profit.

Premier League revenues soar but clubs still make a loss

By Bill Wilson Business reporter, BBC News

    20 April 2017

    From the section Business

Clubs saw increased player expenditure, operating costs and one-off charges.

The two Manchester clubs’ revenues increased by a total of £160m – roughly half of the total revenue growth recorded by the Premier League clubs.

“The 2015-16 season saw Premier League clubs grow revenues by almost 10% … with the two Manchester clubs alone responsible for more than 50% of the increase,” said Dan Jones, head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte.

    TOSB,

I totally agree with your opinion of Juve as a club.

However, as Mags and others have said, many clubs are tainted. Football is full of cheats, where results are often influenced by what is considered to be the wishes of the authorities.

We saw it in Dingwall and we saw it in Madrid, both within the past week.

Notwithstanding all that, there are often players with those clubs that we admire, either for their ability or their off field persona; sometimes for both.

For me, Buffon falls into the both category .

Of my generation, I didn’t know of one Celtic supporter who didn’t both fear and admire Willie Henderson.

Did we wish his club success?

Maybe that fine club A. Madrid or their humble neighbours will be worthy winners . Or, perhaps the tax friendly club from Monaco will prevail.

It’s a funny (dirty) old game.

    ………………………….

I understand your point completely. However, in order for Gianluca to win a CL medal which I would love because he is a brilliant goalie and a great guy, it would mean that Juventus would flourish by winning the CL. Sorry. No chance would I ever want them to win such a trophy. I hope they get royally humped.

I agree about the high level, high profile cheating that goes on. Refereeing in Real v Barca where Casimero commits booksnle offence after booksble offence but stays on but Vidal is sent off after he clearly wins the ball in a challenge. Barca against PSG with Suarez dive for the penalty for goal 5 and the referee adding on ridiculous injury time to give Barca a chance to get the winner. As for Juve? Where do you begin? Similarly Athletico Madrid.

EUFA need cleaned up. Send in the FBI.

  16. Great article on Jim McLean. The 80’s were a great decade for Scottish football even if we didn’t fully appreciate it at the time.

Of course, the golden era abruptly ended with the arrival of Sourness and the string of cheque book managers that followed him. Apart from us the rest of the teams never fully recovered from or regained their pre-sourness levels.

We really were a thriving football nation, at club and international level, until the Huns started their scams.

    TOSB,

I reckon we are virtually on the same page.

The game is crooked and some clubs benefit more than others.

The examples you cite demonstrate that .

I know ,obviously to get my Buffon wish, Juve would have to win.

However, my hope for him transcends my dislike for his club.

I harbour a dislike for both Madrid clubs, to a greater or lesser degree and am ambivalent towards Monaco.

Thomthetim @ 10.20…yes, wee wullie henderson often gave us the jitters but don’t forget jim baxter…cocky, left-footed genius…silently admired and vocally abused by many Celtic fans, who, on seeing him carry the ball towards our box in that smooth, elegant left-footed way, would get extremely anxious and shout, “Get intae that useless b*****d”……
