Martin O'Neill answers on his future and summer signings

When asked if he threw a hand grenade last week by not being clear on his future Martin O’Neill today insisted he “didn’t throw in a hand grenade, I know it is unlike you to interpret it that way”.

“You can interpret all sorts of things [but there was] no intention on my behalf".

“I came back with my old stock answer; I know it gets really monotonous. I’ve been leaving this club for five years. There is as good a chance of my staying as leaving”.

Perhaps realising that another door had been left open at an important time of the season, Martin quickly stepped in with: “If you are asking me if I am leaving to go to another football club the answer is no”.

Door closed.

When asked about signing plans he replied: “After Sunday that will be the really exciting thing”.

“When I arrived I inherited some pretty good players, and some not to clever, but after two weeks I had made then my team. Looking forward is really exciting”.

Note the repeated use of the phrase ‘really exciting’. You get the feeling the man has lost none of his appetite.

“When Larsson left we thought we could see it through this year, but is has been tough. Help will be forthcoming in the summer”.

I have never heard Martin confirm his plans for next season in such unequivocal terms. Let’s hope we do not get a repeat of last weekends headlines elsewhere.

Just read the BBC Web Site, they are leading with "clear hint at departure" angle.

Or is it that he is really exiting (ie making an real exit...)

    Paul
You would have thought that was clear enough but it's obviously not judging by the bbc football web page.

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill has given his strongest suggestion yet that he could leave the club in the summer.
O'Neill again refused to deny mounting speculation that he's resigning to take some time out of football.

When asked where he would be next season, he said he wouldn't say for sure, but added he "definitely wouldn't be going to another football club."

O'Neill will win his fourth SPL championship in five seasons if Celtic win at Motherwell on Sunday.

    More to follow...

Obviously the fact that Martin said 'if you are asking am I leaving to go to another football club the answer is no' will just be interpreted as he's taking a break from football.

Why the hell can't the man just say, 'As long as I'm not sacked I'll be here next season' is that too much to ask?

The word around Celtic Park over the last week or so has been that Martin is taking a break from the game altogether. I have to say, reading his comments today, this lends some weight to that story.
Whatever Martin decides he will always be remembered as the guy who gave us back our pride on the playing field. If he does go, then it will be with my thanks and best wishes.
I will then turn my attention to giving "total commitment" in terms of support for the next manager. Give Tommy Burns another go I say.

If Martin Oneill should leave Celtic (lets hope he doesn't) the next manager in line for the Job in my opinion would be Tony Mobray, no better man to do the job than the guy who invented the famous huddle and turn things around with Hibs

Like many others including the BBC I am also reading this as he is off in the Summer however I am intrigued by the fact that it sounds like he is still going to be involved in the transfer activity. Do I sense another General Manager/Coach type management structure? It makes sense in as much as it will relieve him of much of the day-to-day part of his job.

    David Moyes for me.

    Is he a celtic man.

Tony Mobray lacks the big game experience though but he plays lovely football.

MON stays for 6 more years then Moyes will be primed for the position.

Give MON time to win his 9 or 10 titles first though.

Without trying to get too heavily into semantics here I think we should remember that Martin talks about the "football club this, the football club that" it is the terminology he uses. I think this is more media stirring.

I also think there is a little evil in the man too, he likes to keep all those idiots at the press gathering (except Paul) guessing.

Keeps everyone on their toes and makes us realise just how lucky we are.

OK - lets stop talking now about who "may" replace MON. Lazy journos surfing the Web will be able to print nonsense like "Mowbray fans fav. to replace O'Neill". Let it lie, unlike Chic Young wouldn't.
Anyway, I remember the last time we went into a last match of the season needing a win to ensure the title. All the talk back ten was about our manager leaving. We won the league that time - so that will do for me !

If anyone else mentions MON leaving until after the Cup final I say give the charity box a tenner,be positive and don't even mention these websites of the B b c and the others,it's only a free advertisement for their website,we may have to pay the licence fee in most instances but if you don't click on their websites then you won't give them extra revenues.

After all there has been an open policy of bhoycotting the recor*

I do believe it has been hitting them in the pocket, more so than ever recently judging by the way other papers are changing their editorial stance towards Celtic to pick up on their lost readers.

There will only be one set of supporters smiling at the end of the weekend.

Have to agree with the Beeb Paul, sounds like he is leaving but as he says not to another football club. Could it work with JR and SW in charge while we wait on MON sorting out his private life? As a 'family' club I would like to think we would but if the 'success at any cost' mentality takes over then its unlikely we will. However as supporters we should definitely put the who thing to one side and concentrate on one more final push this Sunday. Wee Tam.

    Paul, well done.

It's tremendous now hearing ALL aspects of press briefings rather than the selected bits that the media stick out.

Not only do they spin and re-gurgitate old news to sound negative - and never more so than on the eve of big games - but as we've now read, they selectively omit stuff that would be construed as positive for Celtic fans.

I doubt we'll read of MON being "really excited" about anything in tomorrow's papers, radio/tv reports, or on the BBC website.

It was great to read about it here though.

C'Mon Celtic - one more push.

" excited about signings" "help will be forthcoming" this is seismic from the usually cautious MON.

impossible to believe he will leave just as the opportunity to really take us forward presents itself. "much chance of staying as leaving" he's been saying this type of stuff for years.

Prepare for the double, a summer of signing fun and continued domination with MON leading the parade.

IF MoN was to leave, i don't think he'd quit permanently. It would probably be something like 6 month's while putting someone in temporary charge. Someone like SW and JR or maybe even..... Paul Lambert? Too late for that one i guess.

anyway, i don't see why i am speculating on this, i firmly believe that MoN will spend the cash over the summer and get the new team in order come august.

Oh, and thanks Paul for telling the'whole truth', instead of the likes of the Record going "When Larsson left _________ it has been tough_____Help"

Just taken from the BBC and the record website:

"SPL Points Change Plan by Joe King:

Today it has emerged that the Scottish FA in association with the BBC and Daily Record, after an intensive campaign, have decided to push through the points restructuring of the SPL. From today all points for this season will be re-evaluated to the old format of 2pts for a win a 1pt for a draw. This make the title race neck and neck with Rangers sitting comfortablyy ahead on goal difference. An SPL source said "We felt it was the fairest way to upset Celtic and hand Rankers the title". Meanwhile, things got much worse for Celtic as there manager said he's leaving. When asked about the future he said "Who cares leave it to Co Adriannse".

This story has as much foundation as anything the BBC has printed today.

MON has not been at celtic for quite a few summers in his charge. World cups etc, just because he may be taking some time off after the season is over it does not mean he is going anywhere... pure speculation!

  • At 20/05/05 14:35, Anonymous Anonymous said…

    Lets face it.
    1. The press up here have nothing to write about.
    2. They make crap up/miss interprit/make mountains out of mole hills etc.
    3. Negative news sells more than positive.

Martin realised this along time ago and simply goes fishing at press conferences.

Come on the guy is doubtless a smart and shrewd cookie. He knows exactly what he is saying (well apart from in Turin, with a certain ref) and knows for a fact that press will hang on his every word. He must have a right old chuckle to himself when the media go into overdrive and the least wee thing he says.

The other factor is diversion. By holding the kind of press conferences he does, it diverts attention from the players. Just look at fannny baws Mourino at Chelsea.

Keep it up Martin, it certaintly gives me a giggle.

    Scott

MON is a very clever guy and doesn't tend to make comments he doesn't mean.

I'm sure if you were to analyse the "MON to go..." headlines, they all come before big games and are usually attributable to some vague comment he made to the press.

My personal feeling is that he's playing the media like a violin.

He throws this stuff about to get the spotlight on to complete nonsense about him, which in turn takes the spotlight and pressure off the players.

I personally think that if he wants to go, fair play to himk. I'll miss him, but life will go on with yet another "Rangers revolution" (how many is that now?)

McCann came and gave us some fiscal stability to build on and O'Neill did a similar job with the team.

Your 'contact' is spinning a line. There's no way this kind of information (even if it was true) would be passed to the ad agency and I'm sceptical to think anyone at Celtic would think some press ads might address any kind of fan backlash at MON leaving (which he won't).

Let's not forget that Martin O'Neill is a very, very astute. man. Do you think he would deliberately put things in the media envronment that he thought would damage our chances on the eve of such a crucial game?

    Nonsense.

I very much share the opinion of those who are disgusted with the BBC.

We can make an active decision not to buy the Record or the Sun, but unfortunately many of us can't escape buying a TV license.

I therefore find the BBC's agenda over the past few weeks, both on radio and the interent, even more disgusting than the tabloids.

It may be argued that the objective of newspapers is to sell advertising, but what's the BBC's excuse??

One other point, shame on those already talking about MON's successor. You're the reason why tabloids still make money.

Big Eck should check out his club's 132 year history. He'll find out that they did not accept the ref's authority in 1969 when Jim Callaghan did not send Big Yogi off in an old firm game which Celtic won. Rangers' dignified protest was rewarded with the ref being suspended for 8 weeks.

A point no-one has made so far. Just HOW much money has MON made taking the Third Estate to court for their shambolic attempts at journalism?

If I were him I would be making exactly these sorts of ambiguous statements until we get the next 'exclusive'. A friend of a friend who swears. Oh yeah? Hotline to the brief.

I've also envied him on his position in being able to lay all of those mugs on betfair who have heard a whisper he is going to be the next manager of whoever. I hope he has made a tidy sum all told.

    Bobo leaving
    Sutton leaving
    Petrov leaving
    Fernandez leaving {yes ya dancer}

    Crests broken, thugs and thieves

    Celtic a Club in crisis.

All however runs smoothly down mordor way. You couldnt make it up, well you can if your employed in certain areas of the media. No doubt that wee shit that is Spewan cameron will flog it for all its worth on real rangers radio.

Players come and players go. Managers come and managers go thats the reality of the situation Will MON leave?. Only if it is for the health of his wife, even then im sure he will still have dealings with celtic. Why? because he s one of us. Lets pray for his wifes health and lets pray that he stays. Something just tells me that he s at it with the press I do really believe he has a great disdain for some of them.

a wee pop at big Eck’s constant claims that he is not too far away from having his own team?

I believe, like others have said before, that Martin likes to tease these hacks every Friday at the obligatory press conference. I personally cannot see Martin leaving Celtic this summer or anytime soon.

O'Neill is staying, I don't see how it could be interpreted any other way.

Eck taking the morale high ground? He was adimant the penalty had been awarded correctly, when even the CIA and MI6 couldn't argue for it. Also wasn't this the same manager who put pressure on match officials by saying they might try to be "too fair", i.e. any decision against Rangers is a bad decision and biased because the ref is only trying to even up some notional disparity.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it and who your audience is. The spin is in the eyes of the reader or ears of the listener. The interpretation is not left to you and me and Joe Public, the interpretation is made before we get the information and all we get is tainted propeganda.

it's so good to have someone in the conf without an agenda. You see the newsnow feeds and it's all negative.

It's a press agenda, I'm not even going to taint it by saying HUN press. It's the news media's way. They need scandal and controversy. Saying MON is staying is not news. It's not controversial, it won't sell papers.

    Thankfully you sold out ;-)

    Keep up the good work!

For a more balanced view, check out the Guardian website. No mention there of MON leaving, instead Thompson talking about trying to win the league, and MON and Thompson talking about trying to convince Bellamy to stay...

Killer quote is Thompson "I think the English Premiership has got the best chance but I know he wants to play Champions League football.
"Hopefully, we can get the job done in the next week or 10 days (League and Cup double) then maybe sit down and have a drink with him and say, 'C'mon stay here!'"

Bellamy wants to play Champions League Football... Don't think Man Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea will be going for him, so leaves us or Everton... I know where I'd rather play ;)

It was only a month ago that he came out with
"In some instances, it may sound strange, but in their effort to show they are strong - at Ibrox on a couple of occasions - they can be too fair, if that makes sense." - eh no it doesn't but carry on...
"In an effort to show they're not going to be influenced by the Rangers crowd or intimidated by Rangers players, we've had some decisions you would say were strange."

If that isn't questioning the integrity of the referees, then I don't know what is!!

Top of the league and one game away from winning it. In the Scottish Cup Final with the potential to win the double. A Scottish Football record sponsorship deal around the corner. If this is a crisis, then I am up for a crisis every year.

With regards to the will he / won't he stories with regards to Martin. People's families are the most important thing in their lives. If he is indeed leaving for family reasons, then I wish him all the best for the future and thank him for 5 utterly fantastic years.

However, I think that it is in severe bad taste that the press, I am not including this site in this, continue to speculate with regards to Martin stepping down due to family reasons. Can they not leave the guy and his family alone.

It is not new news anymore, and to read the articles you would think that we have a major game coming up. However I am paranoid.

Over the past 2 weeks, we have been losing O'Neill, Balde, Bellamy, Petrov and Sutton. This is not paranoia, but a deep rooted conspiracy by the Scottish establishment. However it has gone on for 132 years and won't change.

In response to the criticism levelled at him he said "It happened to Walter Smith as well. When he won nine in a row, he was getting slaughtered for not doing well in Europe." Hmmm, ‘Eck – one big difference you haven’t won nine in a row – you struggle to win one in a row!

Lots of comments, good and bad, about Martin O'Neill's response to the question "Will you be here next week / month / season?" My take on it - he has always been consistently non-committal. Why? Because if, the first time he was asked it, he said yes, then there would come a time, inevitably, when asked he would have to tell the truth and say no or lie and say yes. The man, in my opinion, has too much integrity to do either of those things. The first might damage the clud, the second would damage his reputation anfd more importantly his self respect.

Incidentally, I have it on good authority that the man himself not only reads this site, but also contributes to it. I think there should be a prize for the person who successfully outs him. My vote goes to RAB1888 for his 2.44 comment.

Anybody know where I can watch the game on Sunday in Chennai (that's Madras to all those people with years earlier than 1990 in their usernames).

  • At 20/05/05 22:10, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Even if we ignore the medias' usual negative spinning of MON's comments there can be little doubt that the signals he has been sending out have been rather contradictroy.

On the one hand he has been rather non-commital and evasive about his immediate future. Now this could just be MON stubbornly refusing to play the media's game. Or it could be that circumstances in his personal life are such that he genuinely doesn't know what the short term future holds for him. It is difficult to say what the truth is without unnecesary speculation and rumour about a matter which should remain private to those involved. We will just have to wait and see how matters unfold over the nex few weeks and in the meantime give MON our full support.

Condraticting the speculation that MON will be leaving is the fact the manager has seldom been so positive and purposeful in his talk about summer transfers. There are a lot of inications from MON that plans (his plans?) for the rebuilding of the team are at an advanced stage with talk of an "exciting" summer.

I have no idea what will happen over the next month or two but I do feel that this close season could be the most important at the club for many years. Lets hope it is exciting for all the right reasons.

BTW while there might be plenty of contradicitions in MON statements he has a long way to go before he reaches the level of Alex McLeish. I mean can anyone find greater condictory terms that "Rangers Football Club" and "Dignity".

    Hail! Hail!

Has anybody seen a lot of the youngsters playing in the reserves this season?

I would promote Irvine, Cuthbert, Lawson and Quinn for next season.

Watched Irvine play in the centre of mid earlier against the Arab reserves. Very good awareness, touch and vision. I am sure that he can push Jackie/Didier for his more familiar right back slot next season.

Cuthbert looks good in the centre of defence. I would loan him out next season with Lambo at Livi and feel he would come back to Celtic challenging for a place in the first team along with JFK this time next year.

Lawson had a very good start to the season in the reserves. He was the main man in midfield early doors, but his promotion to the senior side in the past few months has seen him playing less football. It is telling that Paul Lambert more or less replaced the young pretender in the reserves. Another gem that I feel would benefit from playing elsewhere on loan under Lambo.

And what about The Mighty Quinn?
Another young prospect who lost his place in the reserves recently due to his success. This promotion has seen Rocco stuck in limbo, training with the first team at the tail end of the reserve season.
Nice to see him start against the Arab reserves.
He is champing at the bit, right at the heels of Craig Beattie for a first team start and has the physique that MON usually goes for.

Honourable mentions to McGlinchy, Mulgrew and O'Dea, who should be the next youngsters chapping at the first team door.

Bit of pressure telling on the posters late last night.

Think we were going to win the league or something.

Think some of us are burying our heads in the sand regarding the media unsettling us about the future of our blessed Martin.

If it’s a ploy by Martin to take the pressure away from the team then well done but Martins constant playing games with the media when it comes to situations regarding his future causes us the upmost fretting and worry.

Rumours from your Aunties Uncle 2nd cousin twice removed all of a sudden grow arms and legs.

The truth will come out when Martin decides its right to tell us, it might be good it might be bad, but we shouldn’t at this moment discredit any eventuality.

Coz if we do a lot of posters and the creator of this site might just look a bit foolish in their “its no going to happen” stance.

Decided not to take up my option for a ticket for the Davie Cooper stand for tomorrow somehow didn’t feel right, but watching us possibly winning the league with my dad together for the 1st time since 1988 feels like the right thing to do.

But also leaving him to watch the cup final himself next week cause I got my tickets yesterday also feels corrected.

Well I took him to the cup final last year, so I don’t feel guilty!!!!!!

    Daily Mail

Glazer: Now the truth becomes clear

Euro league: Glazer wants to form breakaway competition

Manchester United's new owner Malcolm Glazer is expected to initiate a fresh attempt to form a breakaway European super league.
The American tycoon has seen one avenue of increasing United's revenue closed after the European Commission ruled out any support for a legal challenge to the Premier League's policy of selling TV rights collectively.

The Glazer family are understood to have now instructed their advisers to sound out other members of the G14 group of 18 elite clubs about the chances of a breakaway European competition.

UEFA expanded the Champions League in response to the last threats of a European super league in the late 1990s and although it is hugely lucrative for English clubs, the distribution of TV money is still handled by European football's governing body.
What the Glazer family would really like is for United to be able to negotiate their own TV deals but that door looks to be shut for both overseas and domestic rights, leaving a new European league as the only way to find new TV money.

Hilary Cook, investment director at Barclays stockbrokers and a football finance analyst, told the Press Association: "It is very interesting what Malcolm Glazer will try to do with TV rights.

"He needs to increase profits and football is not a business where you can cut costs easily.

"He will increase revenue to some extent by raising ticket prices but TV rights is where the big money is, particularly if a breakaway European super league is formed.

"That is not a short-term or even mid-term possibility but it is in the long-term, and it would have fantastic media potential and he would be looking to exploit that."

    Guaranteed involvement

Glazer's ideal scenario would be a league where clubs are guaranteed involvement every year without having to qualify, similar to the American NFL in which his Tampa Bay Buccaneers compete.

In his mind, that would cement United's long-term future and guarantee a permanent high-income stream.

Greg Dyke, the former United director and former BBC director general, this week estimated that the club could earn £25million a year from overseas rights alone: currently they get £5.5million, the same as every other club in the Premiership.

Dyke added: "Perhaps they want to go their own way with some other foreign clubs - if the Glazer family think they could get away with that then that would explain why they have borrowed as much as they have."

Glazer should have a powerful ally in Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi. G14 was Berlusconi's idea, driven by his Milan-based company Media Partners, whose efforts to form a breakaway league in 1998 forced UEFA into expanding the Champions League and increasing TV money for the clubs.

Berlusconi has been forced to step down as president of Milan due to conflicts of interest, but it doesn't take a genius to work out how influential he remains: no-one has replaced him and his younger brother Paolo is vice-president.

Berlusconi is also the man who lobbied UEFA - unsuccessfully - to provide his team with a wild card entry to the Champions League when they failed to qualify for the 2001/02 competition.

    Big Joe, Says........

Looks like the team will be unchanged................

    No change for Bhoys

Celtic manager Martin O'Neill is set to name an unchanged side for the SPL clash with Motherwell at Fir Park on Sunday.

The Hoops boss has no fresh injury worries but young striker Craig Beattie is looking for a start after hitting the crucial winner at Hearts last week. It appears likely, though, that O'Neill will go into the match, in which they need a win to guarantee retaining the title, with his more experienced line-up after Didier Agathe and Chris Sutton both showed no reaction to recent groin injuries.

Celtic (from): Marshall, McNamara, Balde, Varga, Agathe, Valgaeren, Petrov, Lennon, Thompson, McGeady, Wallace, Hartson, Maloney, Beattie, Douglas, Henchoz, Lambert, Laursen, Sutton, Bellamy.

Someone was saying that BBJ might only last 45mins???
    Why???

    Comeonthehoooooops.

Spanish sports daily, Marca, state in their online edition this morning that Begian goalkeeper, Erwin Lemmens, is to sign for Celtic. Lemmens apparently made the announcement last night on Catalunya Radio. Lemmens is the reserve goalkeeper with Espanyol.

The diginfied silence comment from McLeish really is priceless.

Here is a guy who has openly questionned referees but he has the temerity to say this. Of course our sectarian media lap it up.

Diginified silence from the club steeped in sectarianism - that practiced a form of aparthied and that has had the SFA and their employees in their pocket for those 132 years - brilliant.

As for MON - well I think its clear he is going to take stock at the end of the season. If his wife remains unwell and he IF wants to take a sabbatical there is nothing we can do but give him our best wishes and welcome him when he returns.

    Caretaker manager anyone?

Have a look at this site. They may be able to help. Seems to be a couple of bars in Goa, though I am sure that is more than a hop skip and a jump from Madras.
Be sure to ring them up first!

    http://www.celticbars.com/BarsI.htm

I must also echo Neg Anon. What McLeish said has to be the funniest thing I have ever heard from a Rangers representative. I am sure he must have been misquoted as I do respect the man and only believe he is at that club as some sort of punishment for a wrong doing in a previous life!

    Definately a big DOH!! moment.

Come on the hoops on Sunday.

Looks like The Daily Mail stole your thunder Paul with the big exclusive unless you have something different on offer for us?
It's been an open secret really whats been going on with the Glaser family and Manchester United. Not hard to put 2 and 2 together with all that is available in the public domain.

The European leagues have been always on the cards for years.

Now we know why Celtic were at the G14 meeting.

The Daily Mail has not got the story. Good try, certainly was 2 + 2, but not right all the same.

Then the only other scenario I can see (that has not already been discussed) is that Celtic are asked to join a new (smaller) breakaway Glazer English/UK superleague with all the big teams involved owning their own TV rights.

The Glazers' initial focus on improving media revenues is likely to be on international television rights. In two years time, however, they could be in a position to challenge the collective selling agreement, a move which could have major implications for other Premiership clubs. The Premiership keeps pointing out that such a move would require the support of fourteen other clubs. However, they are sticking their heads in the sand because the collective agreement is vulnerable to a legal challenge on the grounds that it is incompatible with competition law.

if as the scottish rags are to believed MON has been leaving since the day after he joined Celtic - why should now be any different?

If he really is/was leaving why would he be constantly quoted in the vein of "I" want Bellamy to decide by the end of this month/ "We" need to do this or that during the close season, etc etc?

Anymore "guff" about the great Martin O'Neil will have me drowning in my champagne glass. 5 years, 15 domestic trophies, 6 won, 3 in his first year. That's all folks. To compare him to Stein is great dishonour but you lot never knew about that, Did you?
