First comment?...woo.
Paul, what are likely to be some of the more important matters under consideration, at the AGM?
Sean
-
Lennoxtown?
-
There was a debate a few weeks ago about the dividend reinvestment scheme and stats on how poor the actual numbers of votes cast are at Celtic AGMs and EGMs.
It appears The Trust are going to champion the dividend reinvestment proposal again next year on the basis they will get the message across mor effectively. Surely we should now use the votes cast at this AGM, with the Trusts 2 motions namely the Board Member and Charity Match, as a measure of whether the reinvestment scheme with its inherent costs is worth resurrecting?
If the voting numbers aren't up will they agree not to waste our Club's time and money on a failing mission?
I am hoping to go along. How about a Celtic Quick Pint afterwards?
-
Call me a cynic Sean, but the important matters are not the ones on the agenda. The agenda has a lot of approving and re-electing votes, as well as two from the Trust (supporter on the board and an annual charity match). I expect board to bounce the ‘supporter on the board’ for reasons given in previous years, though it will be interesting to see if to what extent dialogue has improved here.
The gems are in the detailed comment from the board members and manager. Anything said here is will be referred to for the next year. I am specifically interested to know how we plan to realise our previously stated aims given the lack of European money this year.
The beauty of being a PLC is that the people charged with the responsibility of running our club need to come to the shareholders and explain such matters. The letters “PLC” is used as a derogatory term by many, however, it is a status we should not underestimate.
BlantyreKev, a Celtic Quick Pint afterwards is an excellent idea. Maybe I can explain to you Paul’s conversion on the road to dividend reinvestment.
-
Paul,
I'm afraid that people(not peepel!)like myself who are non-shareholders have to rely on 2nd hand testaments and recollections from those in attendance(and, dare I say it, the meeja).
Now don't get me wrong-I'd love o be there and corner DD and probe him under a glaring spotlight. I know that good folk like yourself will represent the worries and concerns of most of the Hoops faithful. I could definitely give you several questions to ask(as could other posters)but I' m positive you already have a list as long as a Schmeichel throw-out of pertinent queries.
Having never attended an AGM, what really goes on behind the scenes. Are completely relevant questions from concerned fans and shareholders dismissed with an arrogant snort? (I'm referring to Mr Quinn's quote from last year alluding to the fact that we don't know how lucky we are to have DD on board). Or are genuine greivances that are aired given due consideration and constructive answers?
Apologies for my naivety on the matter.
-
Paul, do you have a message to fans / bloggers in the event that DD is there? How should they react and what are the implications? I can envisage some giving DD a torrid time and I would hate the gulf to widen between board and fans. We should be seeking to work together and promote understanding.
-
Paul
I attended all the AGM's when I lived in Scotland and am very much in favour of mass shareholder participation (I even read the annual bumf we receive and therfore was able to participate in the dividend re-investment scheme).
It does annoy me that no one has ever satisfactorily explained why the AGM cannot be on the saturday morning of a home match.
Even if CP is unsuitable on a match day the board should consider an external venue to allow as many shareholder fans as possible to attend.
-
Paul - good to see you getting this message across - very important that we use whatever medium we have to ask the questions!
-
Paul67,
as an ex-pat I am unable to attend. Isn´t Celtic a global brand ? a global family ? surely it is and this restriction should be explored. Is there no plans to have some kind of webcast for AGM & EGM in the future ? My only influence is through the CST. I think it would be a great thread especially the AOB part of the AGM if posted in an unpartisan way.
Is it safe to say that MON knew he wouldn´t be giving up the reigns at the last AGM then ? Interesting I wonder when exactly he decided to quit ?

Must be a slow news day today....
Any chance of sneaking a hidden tape recorder in and putting up the full transcript of the agm.......and then we just have to imagine DD's video link and PL head nodding between his lines...
My job entails me attending at least AGM so the idea of going to one voluntary makes me feel very tired......
Will it be the usual three questions from the floor in the usual order; CSA>Celtic trust>and planted man with dog on string/daily record... or will they extend the questions this year?
Will Mr CQN be asking any questions of them?
For what its worth my questions would come from the following:
What is the target level of debt without the club making it to the premiership?
Is there a share issue planned in this current finacial year?
Does the board feel that the outsourcing of "normal" football operations reduce margins or customer care?
Have the board considered a customer charter for the ticket office?
When will the board be ready to announce concrete plans for the Lennoxtown complex?
Does the board feel that letting our better player's contracts run into their last year represent prudent asset management?
Will BQ be retiring this year?
When is the company planning to install a 2-way e-mail cable into the offices?
With decreasing attendances at celtic park is there any plans for introducing a scheme where season ticket holders can sell on their ticket legally whilst both enhancing the club's revenue and recouping funds of the fan?
Do the board agree that the official web site is a poor communication tool for both shareholders and customers alike?
Does WGS feel that he has all four corners of his jigsaw or is he still trying to make out the picture....(one for Kev ;-))
-
Lets not forget to ask about when is the Car Park going to get tar "macademed" ?
-
That's all very well Paul67 but.........if we go, do we just sit and nod/shake head...............can you just get up and ask a question? If you disagree with what the board says what do you do? (boo).....:-)
Anyway, my 1 question would be....................why is it that we have a board that is experts in their own fields but....................can't get their message across to the fans regarding Celtic matters?
-
Thanks for the reply Paul.
Neg anon:even when we ask the questions we still sometimes don't get the answers.
Will it be a case of reading between the lines or will the board give sufficient answers, even if they aren't positive?
Awe naw...seems a bit unfair.Any other restictions we should know of?(age?)

Hi Paul,
Firstly sorry to reply to a previous thread but I seem to be quite a bit further behind than most of your contributors.
I've followed more than a few post on here about the full back position at Celtic Park, to put it in perspective, anyone fancy a swap, one of the present incumbents for Rodrigues, otherwise I just can't see Rangers doing a Liverpool this year :)
BelfastBhoy :- Thanks for the link, and congratulations are due to P.L for his stance in this, I think J.Mc may have made a mistake in this, it would have been better to forgo the chairmanship and retain voting rights, I can't figure out C.Rs position at all, this was a wasted chance as perhaps a group of three together could have persuaded others to think again Forget the tabloids who needs the F.T when you have this site for financial news.
-
Paul
If we can make it along to the AGM that was a very kind offer to buy any Celticquicknews blogger a drink. Or have I picked you up wrong again;)
Given the government's intention to legislate to ensure a fan on the board at football clubs, as they regard them as a community resource and not rich people's playthings, a good question may well be what consideration have the Celtic Board given as to who will be the fans' representative on the Board - someone from the Trust?
or other less considered options, such as
Brian Dempsey?
someone from the CSA?
or someone from Celticquicknews, not EdwardUrsus-a?
We should have expected the Board to have given some thought or even have plans for the eventuality.
The second resolution from the Trust is asking for Celtic to play an annual match for charity (not like against Artmedia!) but to raise funds for Celtic's Charity Fund and significantly increase its income.
Incidentally it was only under Fergus McCann that Celtic began to raise significant sums of money for charity (now well over a million pounds since he took over). For about a hundred years Celtic gave very little to charity though it did feature as an item in accounts. I think there were some years in the 1970s or 1980s when they were giving less than when they started in 1880s.
The Trust are highlighting the fact that in January it will 10 years since Celtic launched its Social Charter which included a commitment to the Charity Fund and the Club's opposition to racism and sectarianism. Fergus saw the importance of such things to the club and readily offered his support and willingly challenged the bigots within the Celtic family and wider in Scotland (for instance those in the SFA)
Now how about asking Fergus to change his spots and be the fans' representative on the Board rather than his own?
-
Paul,
Celtic's is the only AGM I've ever attended. I can't make it this year and it doesn't really bother me. My Dad once attended as proxy for his cousin in the bad old days where everything went through on the nod. It does seem, to me, to be much the same now. All the real voting is done before the AGM even takes place, as far as I can see. There is no room for the ordinary shareholder to influence things, is there?
-
Aw Naw Annoni,
Hope your well.
You probably forget but during one of our tet a tets I confirmed that MON began to discuss leaving in February this year. Well after the last AGM. Although if you recall his personal situation had been ongoing since the previous summer.
Rumoid some good questions there mate. A few might be a have too much of an operational focus but I would expect our main men to be clued up and versed for the AGM.
The fact that we have to ask these questions shows that communication is poor!
-
I agree Paul, everyone who can and is eligible should turn up for the AGM. I fully realise that the balance of power sits with DD &Co but the more "small" shareholders who do turn up the more seriously we will be taken. An added advantage is your get the news first handed and not from some anti Celtic hack who is there for one reason only that is to undermine CFC and all associated with it.
-
Parkheadcumsalford -
I think the only way the ordinary shareholder will have to influence things is if enough of us owned shares - I'm not sure what the current breakdown is, but I'm pretty sure if the fans owned, say 29% of the club, then we'd have the power to make a difference.
Anyone know how many shares/% holding we actually own?

How about BlantyreKev for the supporter representative on the Board?
My manifesto for election would be to have sent to all Celtic websites a concise summary of the legally distributable Board minutes of every meeting and to have these published on the Official site as well as match programme and Celtic View.
I would hold supporter 'surgeries' to take on Board comments and present the ones I cannot answer to the Board at the next meeting ensuring all recurring issues are highlighted and addressed and measurable targets drawn up to be met by the Club. Weekly surgeries in Glasgow and monthly surgeries in rotating Irish and English locations.
I would coordinate action groups and think-tanks on business expansion to capitalise on the wealth of ideas of the Celtic support and have cost/benefit analyses done before presenting realistic proposals to the Board. All the while utilising voluntary assitance of these supporters to minimise cost to the Club.
This is a one year trial period only and I would have no right to redundancy, severance etc. The annual salary would be £30k plus reasonable expenses.
Now, all we need is a proposal, a seconder, and someone to sneak under the table, wire up Dermot to the mains and flick the switch when the vote's called so his hand shoots up in the air.
-
Blantyre Kev, nice idea.I'll second.

As PL he carries his voice home to the Kev of Blantyre
Kev of Blantyre, oh he missed strolling in from the parkhead
His desire is always to be there
Oh Kev of Blantyre

Carry me back to the days I knew then
Nights when we sang like a heavenly choir
Of the life and the times of the Kev of Blantyre
Kev of Blantyre, oh he missed strolling in from the parkhead
His desire is always to be there
Oh Kev of Blantyre
Smiles in the sunshine and tears in the rain
Still take me back where my mem'ries remain
Flickering embers grow higher and high'r
As they carry me back to the Kev of Blantyre
Kev of Blantyre, oh he missed strolling in from the parkhead
His desire is always to be there
Oh Kev of Blantyre

We must all go to the AGM to voice our distrust at the boardroom level. We must quiz DD on comments such as "I don't see supporters coming to me asking for their season book to be doubled so we can buy players" This is unacceptible for a chairmain to say when his own personal fortune has sky rocketed since his name was associated with this great club. We must ask questions about the Lennoxtown project, Will there be funds available for GS in the January window and when will talks start with Artur Boruc's representatives!

the board are always happy to say 'we are the best fans in the world'but when it comes to giving us a say in the running of the club...
even after seville when we were given the uefa and fifa awards the board weren't happy to acknowledge the passion we feel for the club in any practical way;in recompense for any real power here's another dvd/away strip we can buy
and yet the fans have a serious say in the boardrooms of barca, real madrid-or is that an illusion?
anyone reading these posts would see a combination of passion, humour
and knowledge probably unmatched anywhere else in sport
..on the knowledge front we had a series of young centre halves after caesar retired.moyes was one,
a guy from dumbarton was another, and a giant from queens park called?

Advice to the board sign up Boruc before he is paraded in front of the English and their media in the Poland game. If he has a great game the clubs down south will be more than sniffing around. I know people on this site have said we have first shout but tapping up does go on.

Noel90,
The man you're thinking of is Ian McWilliams, the tallest player ever to make a first-team appearance for Celtic - against Jeunesse d'Esch of Luxembourg at Parkhead in the European Cup, 1975 I think.
He was latterly bar manager at Blairbeth Golf Club on the south side of Glasgow and died a couple of years ago after a long battle with leukaemia. God rest him.

I wonder who'll be popping in to Miss Pennypacker's tonight, eh? Last night it was a former Premier League manager armed with a video of Hungary v England from 1953. Surely it should have been a bunch of flowers, bottle of wine and box of chocs when visiting a lady?
Harking back to Miss P's erudite words of appreciation for the tactical nous of the erstwhile Magical Magyars, did you know who the Hungarian manager Sebes credited for their country's advanced tactical ideas?
It was Jimmy Hogan, a Lancashire man who had coached teams in Hungary after being held prisoner during the First World War. Jimmy was also credited with helping to build the Austrian "Wunderteam" of the early 1930s.
Sebes said of Hogan: "He taught us everything we know".
And the connection?
In the early 1950s he was brought to Celtic Park to help manager Jimmy McGrory. Among the players he coached were Tommy Docherty... and a certain Jock Stein.
Celtic's distinctive "total football" philosophy dates back to those days. Which is why MON's "long ball" approach appeared so incongruous to older fans.
I'm hopeful our current manager will return us to a style more in keeping with our traditions.
And that will please the ghost of Auld Jimmy.

Re last nights quiz question - Who was the only Celtic player to score in 4 Hampden finals in the one season ? - Answer was ......Paul Wilson 1974-75 (well done Noel).
1974 drybrough cf Rangers 2-2
1974 league cf Hibees 6-3
1975 scottish cf Airdrie 3-1
1975 glasgow cf Rangers 2-2
Good player Paul Wilson.
I digress again, no apologies. What was your favourite Celtic song as a kid ?
Who recalls :
We don't need your Colin Stein
Joe Harper or Alan Gilzean
We've got someone twice as good
We've got Harry, Harry Hood
Harry Harry Harry Hood
He's half the price and he's twice as good.
We don't need your Jairzinho, Beckenbauer or Eusabio
We've got someone twice as good
We've got Harry, Harry Hood.
Sorry for that but it's CL night on tv and can't help feeling sorry for myself that we should be there.

Feel I should explain re Hilary Carlyle last night. He came on trial to Parkhead in 1975 from Finn Harps and played in a friendly v Birmingham City at St Andrews in Nov 1975. Bit of bad blood at this game re the then recent Birmingham bombings and the sight of so many Celts carrying Irish flags did not go down well with the locals.
As for poor Hilary he was never heard of again but he had an exceptional name.

Another wee quiz question.
Which Celt scored his only hat trick for Celtic in the 6-1 win v China in Aug 1979.
Wonder if Du Wei's daddy remembers the game.
Answer tomorrow.

Guys,
Last season when the other Glasgow team bought, sorry, got Boumsong they got a good deal. A not too bad defender for the cost of wages alone. They then ship him off for a reasonable profit. This season they try to do it again. Same formula but with three times the ingredients. Only this time, they seem to have got , well, cast offs. I feel they were trying to make money out of these guys but you know what they say about too many cooks. Or in this case, too many journeymen. Was it the manager that chose these guys or were they "an offer he couldn't refuse." Was pressure put on him from the legendary ibrox upstairs? Either way, I wouldn't have any of these chancers at Parkhead. Big Marv is the best defender they've got....because he tries.
Anyway, we should concentrate on our ship. We've left the stormy waters behind and it's a new dawn. Full speed ahead.
-
Jamiebhoy, in my (not so humble) opinion, most questions miss the target “why are you not spending money” type questions predominate, questions the board have answered many times before and are not taxed by.
Martybhoy
Good question on how to react to DD. I have no doubt there would be some growling, but I would suggest we always look to the big picture, he is the only who has put over £10million into Celtic and remains our lender of last resort. The relationship with DD should be treated wisely.
Frank from Bedlington, fair point about holding it on a match day.
Awe Naw, I am sure we will have AGM’s of all quoted companies broadcast on the Internet soon. I am also v sure that MON did not know he was going this time last year.
Rumoid, some good questions there, though I have heard some of them and the answers before – I could probably deliver the answer word perfect myself.
I am also pretty sure that no-one from the board reads the content on the official site (news section apart). Do they still not know when Jimmy McGrory became manager?
Gerry, good point; if the message is good, why is the public perception so bad? Blame the press, sure, they are certainly guilty, but the solution lies within.
Edward, two v indifferent defences I think.
In terms of the Uefa rule change for Uefa Cup TV money, The Herald story missed lots of detail. While I would rather no change, the chances are it will make little difference and might even help.
Historyreader, no offer has been made (yet!).
Your point on the government interfering in the constitution of football boards; the government made some populist noises to appease the galleries, they have absolutely no powers, or intentions of forcing football clubs to have fans representatives on their boards.
The board will answer “there are lots of Celtic fans on the board”, which is correct. The question needs some work in my opinion.
Fergus as the fans representative on the board, might just be the best suggestion ever on Celtic Quick News. He sure would sort things out.
Parkheadcomesalford, it is true that the individuals vote is not going to change any specific matter, but you do hear the directors account for the performance of the business during the last year and hear of their plans for the coming year.
Long free afternoon Belfast Bhoy?
Nakamura05, I am so incredibly not interested in the DD close season comments. He is a big boy, as we all are, and is entitled to shout as much as the rest of us.
Lennoxtown is a clear question that I expect the board to head-off with a prepared text.
Dontbrattback…, come along to the AGM and listen to the same old ‘fan on the board’ debate. As I said above, you will hear “we have lots of Celtic fans on the board”. The question needs a bit more work.
If you want a result, the approach needs some work as well.
Oregonbhoy, I heard Figo being interviewed by that former Arsenal player who John Barnes signed for us, forget his name, anyway, Figo came across as a really funny, intelligent and personable man. He would be nothing but generous to Nacho.
JohnBhoy, I had never heard the Jimmy Hogan story before, thanks for that.
St Anthony, I was at the game against China, but cannot remember who scored the hat-trick. I’ll have a stab at George McCluscky.
AnnoniMoose, Rangers signed the best two Bosmans in Europe last season, the best three if you can include the goalkeeper. That kind of form is v difficult to repeat.

Interesting quip tonight from BFDJ on Radio Clyde tonight.
When questioned on the form of Rodrigues,he suggested that he only has a 5 month contract and could be away in January.
After some quick research,it seems my memory wasn't playing tricks on me,as it was reported at the time that Rangers had spent £1 million on the guy.
Not a surprise that this was mis-reported.If he does return to Monaco in January,I look forward to the same media who were lied to by Rangers to ask some serious questions as to why.

Just checked the Inverness website for a report on tonight's reserve game up there - a 2-2 draw, with Caley Thistle coming back from 2-0 down to draw with a last-minute goal.
What's most interesting was the line-up against an experienced Inverness team with seven SPL players in it, including Juanjo: the wee Celts were VERY young. Possibly our youngest-ever reserve side.
Ine-up was: David Marshall; Scott Cuthbert, Charlie Mulgrew, Rocco Darren O'Dea; Tony McParland, Charlie Grant, Michael Gardyne, Ryan Conroy; Diarmuid O'Carroll, Michael McGlinchey.
And wee Charlie, a Neil Lennon lookalike, is said to have really ruffled their feathers. At one point Juanjo had him by the throat!
Fargo likes this guy, so I'm sure Miss P will keep him informed.

Noel90,
I'm more a Parka man ;-)
Typed the team list in a rush as I bolted from work to catch Last Orders at my local - the Rocco in question is Rocco Quinn who, I'd reckon, probably played central defence beside Darren O'Dea. He was in central midfield against Hibs Reserves and has also played at centre forward. Adaptable big lad.
Big Fat Derek's comment about Rodriguez brings into focus the lies Rangers fans are being fed about their new signings. Nieto "the new Batistuta" etc.
But what about Pippo Maniero? Still to be seen, even on the bench. Is he even in the country? Or is he sitting in his hoose in Milan, counting his 100,000 quid retainer and state pensione money while waiting for a phone call from The Mint to confirm Diddy Poorshow's knee has finally given out?
Are there any investigative journalists out there able to tell us the TRUTH?
Or, indeed, any brave enough to reveal why a promising Rangers youth player was taken to hospital suffering from ANOREXIA?
Go on, lads, surprise me.
-
Late update on Maniero:
Apparently he is in Scotland and turned out for Rangers reserves against Falkirk in a thrilling 0-0 draw in which he was marked out of the game by the Bairns' 93-year-old manager John "Yogi" Hughes. Yes indeedy!
In fact, Maniero was so good that even the official Falkirk website described him as "disappointing" and added that it was no surprise he was hauled off after 61 minutes.
Good on The Mint. Another shrewd piece of business, eh?
;-)

Annoni Moose 9.46 - think these 3 stalwarty stooges Rodriguez, Hemdani and FanFan were identified and signed by McLeish himself due to his incredible, in-depth knowledge of French football according to de press (well, it does me) at the time.

I remember reading / hearing somewhere that UEFA are introducing some new requirements on the number of domicile/naturalized players in the squad. Can't remember the formula and some folks could be grandfathered in if the were resident in the country for x yrs etc. All seemed kind of complex. However, do we know by when this is required and how we are tracking to compliance?
What are the penalties for not complying? Seems with the youth system in overdrive we may be better positioned than many.

Found the answer I guess it is just at the concept stage - "proposal"
UEFA has unveiled proposed new rules on locally trained players to the public and European football family.
Nyon conference
The UEFA Executive Committee presented the proposed regulations, which would apply to future UEFA club competitions, to the conference of presidents and general secretaries of UEFA's member associations held today at the European governing body's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
UEFA reveals homegrown player plans
SubscribeVideo HomeOfficial approval to come
UEFA has also asked its 52 member associations to consider applying the same rule for their domestic competitions. The proposals will now be presented to the national associations for official approval at the UEFA Ordinary Congress in Tallinn, Estonia in April.
Squad places reserved
The 'A' list that teams submit for UEFA club competitions will continue to be limited to 25 players, and from season 2006/07, at least two places on this list will be reserved for players trained by the club's own football academy and a further two places for players trained by other clubs from within the same association of the said club. The 'B' list will also continue to exist - involving an unlimited number of Under-21 players who have been at the club for two seasons.
Target for 2008/09
In the following two seasons, one additional place for a club-trained and one additional place for an association-trained player will be reserved on the 'A' list, so that by the 2008/09 season, each club will have in its 25-man squad four club-trained and four association-trained players.

A club-trained player is defined as a player who has been registered for a minimum of three seasons with the club between the age of 15 and 21, whereas an association-trained player is a player who has been registered for at least three seasons by the club or by other clubs affiliated to the same association of the said club between the age of 15 and 21.
Consultation process
The proposals have been revealed after a lengthy consultation process between UEFA and clubs, leagues, national associations, players' bodies, coaches, European political authorities and politicians, and national governments. "We think [the proposal] is a reasonable compromise based on all the consultations we have had, " said UEFA Chief Executive Lars-Christer Olsson. "Although we have had negative responses from some leagues and some bigger clubs in those leagues, all the others involved have been very supportive of this idea. We also think the proposal is legal, because it is a sporting rule, not a restriction, to develop and promote young players."
Negative trends
The proposals have been made after UEFA identified a number of perceived negative trends in European football - lack of incentive in training players, lack of identity in local/regional teams, lack of competitive balance, "hoarding" of players and related problems for national teams.
Restoring balance
UEFA also commissioned an economic study that identified a tendency towards less competitive balance in UEFA club competitions and domestic leagues, an increased link between money and sporting success and for clubs to play fewer local-trained players. The proposals aim to provide more incentive for clubs to train their own players, as well as for the restoration of a competitive balance, firstly at UEFA club competition level, and then at national level if associations accept and implement UEFA's recommendations.
'Something has to be done'
"It seems that as a result of the conference today, most of the associations will now introduce similar schemes in their own domestic competitions," said Mr Olsson. "I think everybody recognises that something has to be done."

God Big Goo I haven't thought about him for a long time and when I did it usually made me pretty angry!!
By the way on Malky Mackay he's currently starring for Watford in the Championship and is being hailed as something of a star!! I suppose experience gained over time can make you a better player, however tell that to a Rangers fan when they see Rodriguez play...
-
I will be supporting Inter Milan tonight but feel slightly guilty about it, taking into account co-efficiency etc, anyone else in the same boat?
-
pbtl
have been told by the denizens of this site before the porto game that we get little improvement in our co-efficient by rangers wins , So its go on the inter!!

it would be trickier if they were playing lazio, with their long association with fascism... but forza nerazzurri!
[apologies if my italian is ropey]

PBTL123, as Xavier says, Rangers would need to gain twelve coefficient points (six wins) before it would gain Celtic one point.
I cannot speak highly enough about Alex McLeish, he has outperformed in the most difficult of circumstances. He needs a ‘result’ to allow him to recover and build confidence – notice that they won by three goals after beating Porto.
If they lose tonight, they will face Dunfermline on Saturday with the prospect of their season being over in October and finishing third in the league, a pain not known for twenty years.
If this happens there will be more blood letting, though the victims of circumstance will go, not the guilty party.
dontbrattbak, chill out on Lazio. While they have their problem fans, most are decent and intolerant of the problems. They are also trying v hard to put things right.
Would you know I was a guest at their 1999 Cup Winners Cup win?
Ciao Giorgio.

I used to console myself with the thought that supporting Rangers in Europe was supporting Scotland.
However I have since decided that I do not want Scotland to be associated with that bunch of neo-nazi sectarian knuckledraggers. Hence INTER INTER INTER INTER.

Will probably do what I did for the Porto match - sat at home on my own with a Tic Top on, pint of Belhaven in hand and didn't cheer or boo for the whole match.
Oh yes, and I had the sound turned down so I didn't have to listen to the Champion's League winners (elect) being praised by our friends at STV / Grampian.

Just back from holiday so missed most of the posts over the last couple of weeks - apologies for going back to a main theme from earlier in the month.
Historyreader refers to the issue of the annual charity match to reinforce this central aspect of our history. Earlier we were talking about the shocking absence of any prominent public memorial to Jock Stein due to bigotry and narrow-mindedness from certain quarters.
How about campaigning for an annual major charity match dedicated in his honour where the emphasis would be on the unique Celtic fraternity and the fight against racism wherever it surfaces. We could display our UEFA / FIFA fans awards and we would show others how to behave with dignity, respect and pride.

I always thought Malky was a fine player. You got nothing complicated but he did the simple things well. That's all you need from a defender IMHO. Win the ball in the air or on the ground and play it to a team-mate in space. From what I've seen of Telfer so far he's of a similar vein. I don't know why he is getting stick from supporters.
You've only got to look at Jamie Carragher to see a player who does simple things well being treated as a star. Their fans sing a song to the tune of The Beatles "Yellow Submarine" "We all dream of a team of Carraghers".
Here's hoping that the Huns get horsed tonight

I agree with you on Telfer, as I've already said here before Telfer is an experienced Premiership player who knows how to do the simple things well.
On Mackay, my brother is actually a Watford fan (don't ask me why?) and he thinks Malks is a smashing player "best defender since McClelland" was his last quote to me (high praise indeed). Actually speaking of Watford they have a young winger come striker called Ashley Young who is going to be a real star a future international I have no doubt(Tom get a scout down there now before Tottenham hoover up all the good young talent around!!)
On tonights game if you're reading this Edwardursas no disrespect to you but I hope your team gets mullered by six goals to nil 3 for Adriano and 3 for Stankovic :o)

Nice thought. An annual charity match is one of the motions on the agenda at the AGM, put forward by the Trust. It is opposed by the Board, I imagine on logistical grounds of adding a new fixture to the calander?
In compromise I would suggest that of the two pre-season home games that we currently have, the non season book game is allocated as the charity match. Instead of the paltry 15,000 as we have annually I imagine the 'Tic fans would warm to this new annual event and would glamourise the e.g. 'Jock Stein memorial charity shield' and bring along the family etc.
Celtic would need to up the ante for the opposition (i.e. no more lower division teams) who may even waive or lessen their fee given the nature of the match. It could benefit all parties. Stiff opposition in a good atmosphere and a chance to blood some new signings and youngsters in front of a 'bhoy'ant crowd, with even an ageed cut to cover costs so Celtic plc is not out of pocket.
Paul
One day on and I count only 14 different people posting directly relevant to this thread. I have the feeling that AGMs and votes are not high on folks agenda the Dividend Reinvestment scheme has a mountain to climb to succeed.
-
Paul,
If the Celtic Supporters trust managed to get more than 29% of the support of the small shareholder, would they by law have to make a formal offer for the remainder of the shares?

Think the idea for an annual charity match is an excellent one, get some decent big name opposition, charge a tenner, get loads of kids in, donate the half time draw, CSC's have fundraisers and raffles and as a bonus we all get to pat ourselves on the back once a year when last years total is beaten.
-
Can the subject of the website be broached at the AGM?
With a view to its accessibility from anywhere in the world should we not have a better site with various language options, especially now with our Oriental players?
The current version really is pretty poor fare and wouldn't particularly entice new fans to the club from e.g Poland, China, Japan.

Strange, that news about Rodriguez.
Earlier in the season, I posted on the skills (or lack thereof) of the Rangers defence. A quick scan of the internet uncovered the truth about Hemdani (injury prone) and the truth about Fan-Fan (crap). Rodriguez, I argued, was probably the only one of the three who looked even half-decent.
Imagine my surprise whilst trawling the sewers of FF recently to find that their forums are full of fans slagging him off. Now, I haven't seen enough of the guy to know for sure, but if he really is as naff as everyone says, that will mean 3 diddies out of 4 central defensive signings. Take into account how poor Fanny Jeffers has been, the fact we haven't even SEEN Maniero and the sublime (I say that with the uptmost irony) skills of the Argie boy wonder in scoring two against Clyde and it makes me wonder:
Why all the pelters for Camara and Telfer in the media?? Don't they see the same games as the rest of us? Don't they have access to the same websites, such as the PSG site which nominated Fan-Fan as worst captain ever and put him right into the Hall of Shame? Don't they have access to the records showing Hemdani played less than 40 games in the last FIVE YEARS? What's wrong with these people?
None even questioned that, having made these signings, that McLeish still felt he had to go out and sign the Greek during the transfer window. How many defenders does one club need?
The Dark Side have made far more costly, far more catastrophic, errors in the defensive department than we have. EdwardU was very upfront about Rodriguez failings the other night - he'd take a Camara or Telfer in his place.
Signings like these really ARE what get managers the sack.
As to the more general point about the length (or not) of Rodriguez contract, surely the press would be better speculating on the length of David Murray's nose. It's not getting any shorter, you know...............
By my reckoning, he has told more lies than a con artist on a busman's holiday. The problem is not with the man who spouts the nonsense though, but with the slavish press in this country which constantly prints them.
The tagline for this site is correct. There are too many lazy journalists out there who just don't know their job. As a media student, I am familiar with the arguments as they pertain to "instant news" and "deadlines" - but to persist with the same rubbish over any sustained period of time is not good enough, especially when a clown like Leggat is more than happy to scour the internet archives when he wants to make a point about the continued bad behaviour of Celtic fans (three incidents in twenty-some years, including Rapid Vienna and Hugh Dallas) and Neil Lennon's disciplinary record BEFORE signing for Celtic.
See? They can do it when they try.
Just in case some of you missed it, there is an outstanding article about the Lennon situation online just now, which I'm happy to supply the link for. Read this and be amazed. Integrity is not yet dead amongst Scotland's scribblers!

Rodriguez is the poor man's Lex Baillie. Whoever the Rangers scout in France is must be a comedian. The three rippers that they have got from there in the summer were portrayed as world beaters by Mr Murray when they signed.
I wonder if any journalists will cast it up to him now.
-
Paul67 , Following on from Bennybhoys comment , how difficult would it be for you to put the site name in Japanese , polish and whatever language it is Du wei speaks ( mandarin??) on the title bar ( along with a welcoming message to overseas supporters ) ? Bet you would receive some serious hits and add a few more interested readers and bloggers to the site.

Cronin rejected my soul - John??
-
11 dropped points out of just 24. 6 behind Celtic. 11 points off the top. Flop after flop after flop in summer signings. A new striker yet to score. An old striker yet to score from open play. Summer signings not fit to play. Lies about lengths of contract. Board members jetisoned, not a youth player to talk of..........
....but no cracked badge.
Give up on the traditional press guys, this is where it's at. Time to go forward on our own.

Xavier, the site is getting a high number of visitors from Poland (www.google.pl is in the top ten referrers list) even though we are in English only. There is a smaller number from Japan, though it is registering better than all other European countries and very low numbers from China.
I would love to get the main article published in Polish, Japanese and Chinese, but I have no language skills, and Alta Vista Babel Fish does not do the job well enough. The comments would, obviously, always be in English, but there have been a few brave souls from foreign parts who have chipped in with broken English.
There is a link above to Football (Japan) Lost In Translation which is an excellent blog dedicated to Japanese football. The editor (Rie) has been helping me out with background on how Celtic are being portrayed in Japan, as well as lots of stuff on Shunsuke we would never get to hear about here.
-
One of ra things I would ask the board about is are there any plans to develop the area around Paradise. As we all know there is quite a lot of vacant 'brown site' ground around the stadium that could be used for tariff car parking or other money making ventures.
I would also love to know if the club has been in contact with Glasgow City Council about the approaches to CP, particularly the width of paths and future transport infrastructure.
And lastly, when they will be setting up a women's team. (my duaghter has been nipping my ear abou this again.)
-

Paul67:
Had a look at the Japanese website there, and found it interesting. One thing though, some of the earlier Naka clips don't work, such as the one for his goal V Dunfermline.
Does anyone know where I can download this? It's not so much the goal itself as Zurawski's piece of magic in setting it up.

"The editor (Rie) has been helping me out with background on how Celtic are being portrayed in Japan, as well as lots of stuff on Shunsuke we would never get to hear about here."
Is the news positive/negative? Anything interesting about Nakamura?

Cronin, Not sure of the answer to your question. There is a whole load of responsibilities for people acting in concert. I suspect that enforcing a takeover bid is not one of them, but I am no corporate lawyer.

Looking ahead to tonights game.
I'm sure I won't be the only Tim watching a little green(and white) with envy. Who can forget the first 87 mins of our trip to the San Siro last season? We all know that perhaps it ain't no bad thing that we are not involved, but what a quandary-Would you rather we were involved for the prestige and finance even though we'd be severely out of our depth? It's a tough one.
In all honesty I approach ra gers european nights with complete indifference(honestly!)and remain so until 30 secs or so before the first family sing-song begins-I won't have that excuse tonight. I will just wait until the 1st sight of a wide-eyed fernando pleading "Who,me?" to the ref after a hefty challenge, or for when the 1st real slice of jam comes ra gers way.
In fact, who am I kidding? I hope the Italians get right INTER(groan-there's a presenting job on Countdown waiting for me!)them right from the kick-off. Something which surpasses our nightmare in B********a might help ease the pain somewhat(and provide a few chortles in the process).
Varga's shampoo,
Calling rodriguez a poor man's Lex Baillie is the best insult I've heard in a while.

Tom 64:- A women´s team would be a great idea. In Glasgow and even on Mull this summer I was struck by the fact that there were more young girls than boys wearing Celtic tops!! The interest is there. Hopefully someone will ask about it at the AGM.
Women´s football is of course also huge in the States and in China.
Such has been the success of the Atletico Bilbao women´s team in Spain that on one occasion(an end of season league decider) the men´s match was moved to accomodate the women´s match!! 35,000 attended.
Last season Barcelona signed Mexican star Marigol she has been a big hit.
I went to see Atletico Madrid Féminas last year and the match was not bad, very little play acting on the field and some worked goals.
BRING ON THE LADIES
-
sorry that should have been well worked goals!!

Malone19, v positive on Shunsuke. He is impressed with his team-mates, better than he is used to. Communication is getting better, though I gather it is still an issue.
Travelling/tiredness/preparedness has not helped him settle. Also, his personal fitness coach was not with him at the start of the season, so his diet and weight have not been perfect. If only they all spend 5% of their income on such matters.
As we discussed last week, this is a professional athlete.
While it is easy to say all the platitudes about the club and the country, he is saying them anyway.
You have wrangled out some detail I had been holding back for an article there!
-
BlantyreKev et. al. I am not a shareholder (therefore am I not allowed on this site...?) but would like to go for a pint afterwards. As for the press, as I have said before they play Russian Roulette with us and all too often they have 5 bullets in the chamber, whereas, all to often, they don't even put one in for Rangers.

I sensed a future article on our Japanese Bhoy ;)

Hi Paul,
With reference to the fan representative on the board debate, could either yourself or any other poster answer a couple of things for me as my knowledge of this is sparse to say the least. Does a fan rep take on all the legal rights and duties of a director if he joins the board? If so won't this cause a conflict with his duties to the fans when it comes to certain board topics? If all this has been answered before on previous posts then I apologise. As to choosing who gets elected I like the idea posted earlier, everyone gets an election song, whoever's song gets sung the loudest at the next home game joins the board.
Cavansam :- I'd hope that even the worst Rangers defence in twenty years would prevent that, but if not I reserve the right to put forward a plausible excuse, alien intervention, supernatural influences etc. btw only 6? You must be feeling mellow :)
Curly :- Thanks for the vote of confidence in the second part of your 11.26 posting.
-
couldn't agree more on the 'professional athlete' thought. When watching our young Andy Murray fight like a man possesed for hours in sweltering heat and humidity then say he needs to work on his fitness puts things into perspective. Also with Agassi being able to do the same at the age he is shows what athletes really are.
I say we go for Mcenroe as fist team mentor!

Paul,
On a different topic I noticed in the Evening Standard an article that suggested that government was planning on doing a u-turn on the Casinos and actually allow 6 (breaking there earlier gentleman's agreement to have only 1)... These kind of stories are normally true as they are generally leaked out deliberately to sneak through policy shifts. Could be disturbing in the context of Ranger's 'get-out-of-jail-free' wildcard.
On other news I have heard Varga has been asked politely to instruct his agent to find another club in the January window.

Paul and Whitedoghunch
Don't want to contradict either of you on the professional athlete front as I do agree with the sentiments but does John Daly the golfer currently fall in to the same category?
-
I would like to see some predictions for tonight's game.
Come on bhoys and ghirls - put your head on the block.
Me?
Inter 7 Rangers 0
(Rickson, Ferguson sent off 88, 89)
-
I think we should all calm down on the professional athlete bit.
After all, how would you like it if you had to work a whole two hours a day and then get your lunch paid for? Not only that - you have to work either Saturday or Sunday most weeks without any overtime.
I don't know why the players union stands for it!
And remember if players were made to come back in the afternoon for more training then their golf handicaps would go up, snooker halls would close en masse and the number of 4*4's on the road would drop significantly. The economy would be in turmoil.

We went over the supercasino thing last week and if I recall correctly no-one is too sure what the impact would be on TFOD however the Financial Director at Ibrox was quoted on Radio saying that it could possibly bring in up to £1m per annum.
That is not to be sniffed at but if it is true then with a turnover of about £50m it hardly seems to be that significant
I would have thought that a figure some 10 to 15 times that quoted would be truly meaningful and have an impact on their business planning but not sure if £1m is going to do that.
Perhaps our old friend EdwardUrsas can enlighten us as to what the potential impact may be if this ever gets over the 40 obstacles that are currently in its way.
As it stands this project is still LESS likely to proceed than MORE LIKELY.
Given the timescales it will be a few years before this could ever have a serious impact on Rangers and there is a lot of water to flow under the bridge for Rangers, MIM and the other myriad tie ups with Ibrox.

No criticism intended of what folk post or don't post, just a wider point that my own theory is that most small shareholders own shares for the pride and have no interest or intention of exercising their rights. I fear we may be flogging a dead horse with the divi reinvestment scheme.
If it was up to me I'd give every shareholder a nominal number of shares with every season ticket purchase and have the resolutions being voted on as part of the season ticket renewal form but that's another topic.
Always happy to have a pint with the likes of yourself sir.

At the very central core of all things that are vital in Japanese culture, there are 2 things which may be the most important of all-discipline and honour. These are the traits which have kept the country at the fore front of all things technological, industrial and artistic.
Thanks to Paul's earlier posting we know just how disciplined Naka really is, compared to some of his colleagues in the west. How honourable he may be we will hopefully never be in a situation where it becomes an issue.
Japan-a fantastical land of mystery and wonder(I do NOT work for any tourist board or travel agency!)that I cannot wait to discover when the Hoops come a callin' on pre-season duty.
Start saving up those Yen now.

Look forward to it Celticbhoy.
Edward, the Celtic board makes your point every time the ‘fan on the board’ issued is rasied. He would need to be a director with the incumbent liabilities, he would need to maintain silence outside the boardroom on board matters.
He/she would also be required to look after the interests of those shareholders not in the Trust – in our case DD.
Fine is theory, but I cannot see DD allowing the Trust to appoint a director given the stance adopted by the Trust.
BromleyBhoy, the casino business will not be on the agenda here for a few years yet – which will be too late. Not my info on Virgo.
Shamrock Diary, there is a line between athletics and pastime that golf straddles along with darts and other fine pursuits.
scotCelt56, don’t forget that footballers are not guaranteed a career into their sixties like the rest of us – as we are often told by football types.
Will try to look in BAZ67.

Predictions for tonight?!?
Inter will go 3-0 up by half-time and will take their foot of the pedal with one eye on Saturday's battle with Juve.
Poor bazza will be sent off as he becomes(understandably)increasingly frustrated at how impotent and laughable his beloved gers have become.
Anyway, I'm off to watch Celtic TV to see what reserve game is in store as a warm up for tonight.
Hail Hail
-
Think it will be a tight game Inter dont seem to be taking the game seriously and the huns are treating it like the final itself that been said 2-0 Inter hopefully with a half time lead i have money on inter half time full time HAIL HAIL

-
Don't kid yourself that Inter are not going into tonights game with anything other than a victory in mind.
My Italian friends show a similar laid back, doesn't matter too much attitude just prior too getting really wired in!
Paul, your right when you suggest DD won't want a trust member on the board. The last time this aws raised his retort went something like "there will be no Celtski plc as far as he was concerned"
-
I continually see references about improving the official web site. However, rarely is there a specific suggestion as to how to accomplish this? Are we talking presentation or content? If it is content then what specifically should be added? Being an official site they cannot print the wide and varied views seen on the diverse Celtic discussion forums and blogs.
As an expat, I do use the site regularly and it generally gives me what I want. I cheerfully stump up the monthly fee for the full service including Live games, even while watching the games at the local Celtic Supporters' club, and still consider it value for money.
I can agree with the need to include some content in Japanese, Cantonese or Polish to encourage hits and fans from our player base. Bulgarian, Slovak, Swedish, Portuguese? Where do we draw the line?
I would love to see some constructive and practical suggestions.
John Cole owes me a mention for this.

Methinks that the concept of sarcasm has escaped you (don't they do that down Edmiston Drive way?), or perhaps I should have put the key words in quotation marks. :-)
Paul - cannot take the glory, but thanks for the compliment anyway. The ground work was done previously by a couple of the other posters - I simply followed like a sheep, er, well . . ., oopsy, did I really say that?

The player you are looking for is Murdo MacLeod who scored 3 against China on Wednesday 8th August 1979.
Did you know that Murdo wasn't the first Celtic player to score a hat-trick that season. A young and upcoming Charlie Nicholas score 3 against Stranraer the Saturday before him.
-
Forgot to mention it was for the reserves allbeit.
-
The explanatory notes in the annual accounts are, I think, very negative towards the proposal at the AGM for a charity football match. Fixture committments and the availability of attractive opposition able to generate a reasonable attendance are quoted. So why the hell don't we organise a game against St Pauli? If played on a weekend we could guarantee several thousand travelling from Germany, with the camaraderie between the clubs also generating massive interest from Celtic fans. The fact we are lumbered with games against Leeds (together with their anti-social travelling followers) as well as Fulham, QPR or Leicester makes this negative stance hard to swallow. St Pauli fans regularly make great sacrifice to follow Celtic in Europe, for example the ones who made a 6 day train journey from Hamburg to Donetsk. The least we could do in return would be to play an annual game with a relatively small match fee going to St Pauli and the remainder to charity.
-
-
Re last night's quiz question it was Murdo MacLeod who scored his only hat trick v China in 1979.
As for tonight's question.
Everyone knows Dixie Deans missed the penalty v Inter in 1972 but who scored Celtic's 4 other penalties that night.
Your better off on here than watching that mince with the currant buns. Inter haven't got out of second gear........but here's hoping.

What impresses me is that I believed Artmedia to be a team who would cause any team trouble at home (or teams would find it difficult playing against them at home) but thought they would et gubbed at other teams stadia. Fighting a 3-2 victory at Porto shows they are not a bad team (and not just a middle table SPL standard). Saying this Porto are fairly poor compared to past years.

I think it is more to do with-the 100th anniversary of Walfrids death .
I know there was a memorial unveiled- at his birthplace in Co.Sligo last year-by Brian Quinn.
I also know there was a television crew from Ireland filming at Celtic Park at the weekend for a documentary on Walfrid.

Artmedia have the advantage of being underestimated in every game
Porto may just need 9 points to qualify-
Porto bt Inter
Inter bt Porto
Rangers bt Artmedia
Artmedia bt Rangers
Porto bt Armedia
Inter bt Rangers
Porto bt Rangers
Inter draw Artmedia (this is just for the hell of it!)
Final table
Inter 13 pts
Porto 9pts
Artmedia 7 Pts
Rangers 6 Pts

glad to see artmedia doing well. the Mighty Gers (he, he) will not get one easy game now as they thought they might. Which can only be good news for the rest of the teams fighting for the 6th place slot in the SPL.
-
ironic isn't it. artmedia do what we haven't been able to in several seasons - win away!!

My sources tell me that the documentary is about Walfrid and Celtics Irish connections.
I heard they were keen to do an interview with young Aiden.
Bad news is that it is getting recorded/transmitted COMPLETETLY in Gaelic !

Thanks Noel:
Don't worry the best way i have found to tackle a shortcoming in any language is a right doze off the BLACK STUFF,and then it all just seems to fall into place!
Vertwolfe, old son Rangers might be lucky to get 2 points from their remaining matches.
1,at home to Artmedia and 1 at home to Inter. Can't see them picking up many more points.
-
Anyone enjoy that footballing lesson tonight?
I find it quite unbelievable that the commentators could possibly say that Rangers had played well when the opposition goalkeeper has fielded one shot in the whole game and that was from 45 yards out!!!
Inter were never out of first gear and but for poor finishing and a dodgy linesmans decision, could still have won by four but this seemed to be overlooked by the commentary team.Would that have made the Rangers performance worse than it already was? I don't think so.
Good to see Artmedia show that they are no mugs too.The next couple of games will make interesting watching.
I really don't care if Rangers make it out of this group or not although clearly i'd rather they didn't.Just let them keep racking up the games in Europe while we run away from them domestically.
BankieBhoy
P.S. Those confused as to who they should have been cheering on tonight. Are you guys for real?
-
Have no fears Bankiebhoy,it's the big parachute jump for them.
We were mugged by Artmedia when we were at our weakest.
I reckon we would qualify from that group.
Bring on the Jam Tarts!
-
JonG
I think you missed a subtle point in my analysis - if it were to go as I suggested Rangers would go into the last game needing a win to qualify - instead they end up 4th!
You may well be right that they will be out before then but I quite enjoy seeing how stupid the media can be made to look
Enough - back to considering things Celtica!

How lucky are the Govan Bigots.
Inter played as poorly as they have for some time and even with a weakened team Inter contrived to miss a penalty, get a goal chalked off and miss the easiest chance your ever likely to see.
The bigots luck must run out soon!
-
Some time ago, after our defeat by Artmedia i suggested a four way round robin tourney, hosted by us as a way to raise much needed revenue, and to help us keep up to speed against European opposition.
I have changed my mind.I don't want anything to divert our attention from winning the league title this season.
However,i still feel that there is a place for this type off tourney. The timing could now be pre season.
The other and principal aim in my book was to have it named after Brother Walfrid. That hasn't changed!
-
It could be TG4 the Gaelic channel doing the documentary. When it was TnaG they used to show a lot of Celtic matches. There is something very romantic about watching a Celtic game broadcast completely in Irish.
I remember watching the vitory over Barca when big Rab was sent off. We never knew what had happened at half time as we couldn't understand the commentary.
On Murray FC tonight, they fully deserved their 1-0 reverse. They worked very hard to get it. I wish we weren't such a begrudging bunch sometimes. Lets give the gers some credit.
My my, Inter look very poor though. As Emjay said, how come we never got the breaks, like getting such a soft group. From what I've seen thus far, Inter and Porto are probably the weakest 1st and 2nd seeds in the CL.
-
JonG
building on your suggestion could you find a rich Irish American to sponsor the Walfrid cup in a US based pre-season friendly tournament?
VertWolf
-
Guys
Does anyone really care about what happenned in Milan and Oporto tonight?
I'm still in awe of the Barca performance last night against Udinese.
If there is a better team in the world right now than Barca at going forward from midfield to front line then they must be out of this world because last night was pure football heaven watching them move from back to front.
Mind you if Puyol gets injured they will ship goals like a sieve (even worse than our own) but the chances are they will just score more anyway at the other end.
Forget Inter, Porto, TFOD, Werder, Lyon, Man Utd or even Jose's boring shower of "defenders" if there is any justice in the football heavens then Barca will triumph - just pure football - just pure magic!

Unique suggestion and one I am still trying to assimilate.
Much as I love our dear friend Fargo (and his many disguises) a sponsored tournament from our Beverly Hills Bhoy in his "Hollywood Hideaway" would be heavy going.
It would take us all six months just to work out what he (they) had named the trophy!

I agree completely on how attractive Barca are to watch- I stepped off the train in Edinburgh on the way back to Glasgow to watch it - had all the attacking elements we were talking about the other day
The problem will come when the come up against the likes of AC Milan who have a more combatative midfield and some deadly strikers - meanwhile lets enjoy

did anybody see Mr Dignity being interviewed on Sky after the game?
Paraphrasing, but something like this: "the ref gave Inter every decision"
Think the pressures getting to our man McLeish, after all he never questions the officials o:)
-
Emjay, the man McLeish is not lucky, he has a degree of talent. He will also qualify for the knock-out stage, a fact which does not distress me in the slightest.
-
Just thinking out loud.
If we all bought new tops ,and had Nakamura Shensuke put on them at £1 a letter,£16 quid extra each time,Bingo!
-
Vertwolf
I do agree.
Once Barca come up against Milan or even Chelsea/Liverpool a different game will unfold and the space they use so well will be shut down.
Shame though that we are witnessing a great forward passing and moving team and yet we know that there are a few teams out there that will beat them through being superlative in defence rather than attack.
I'm afraid that I am a bit of a foolish football romantic (probably like you and many others on this site)but winning the CL should be done by the best attacking team and not one that disrupts the play.
I know that defensiveness in football is an art form in itself but it holds no real delight and it never makes you gasp in the way that players like Ronaldinho can do.
I'm not a Barca fan but at least they play the way I like to see football and I agree with you - let's enjoy it while we can and the longer the better.

I do not normally completely disagree with you but on what basis can you possibly think McLeish can get his team to qualify ? - both Inter and Porto have failed to put more than 2 goals past Artmedia and with their defence Rangers need at least a 2 goal cushion to pick up 3 points - as the season moves on and they pick up further injuries I cannot see how they will be able to score or prevent a European team from scoring! There GD in the SPL is +4 after 8 matches
I agree with JonG 2 more points would be good going for them
On the other hand I agree with you it does not really matter and will keep them distracted as we overhaul Hearts to win the league
VertWolf
-
If Artmedia play as they seemd to in the second half tonight against Porto, then the best McLeish can hope for is a run in the UEFA.
Re his remarks after the game which I saw on Sky Sports News:
"We matched them in every department" and "The ref gave them everything."
Is he for real? A missed penalty, a missed sitter, a goal chalked off for offside and that was just the 60 seconds highlights.
At least with an empty stadium they couldn't foul Il Duomo and even La Scala or serenade (scandalise) the locals with quaint folk songs about wading through Fenian blood.
-
Am I the only person who heard the plaintive strains of Derry's Walls being belted out after Inter missed their penalty?
Given that no "normal" fans were present I'm assuming that it can only have been members of the official Rangers party (or their accompanying fat cats)who were responsible for this.
No doubt we can expect the honourable members of the Scottish media pack to pick up on this tomorrow.
Unless, of course, it was them who were doing the singing?
-
thats the most I've seen of rangers recently and they look very disorganised. Hearts seem well but we have players of such higher quality. Frodo Strachan has the better plan and tools.
enjoyed archies commentry
-
I watched Big Eck being interviewed after the Hearts match and he was asked about his decision to go with 3 centre backs.
He replied,
"Well, :twitch of the mouth and eye: I hinted to the players last week that we might go with a 3 at the back against Hearts"
He hinted!
I wonder when he got around to officialy telling his players, because on the evidence of their performance, it was probably in the hotel the night before.
In the first six months of his tenure, I remember watching him in interviews and thinking to myself, "This guy is going off his head".
For me, it wasn't nice to watch. I genuinely felt for the guy and was convinced he was having some kind of breakdown.
But, he won a couple of cups, the hordes got off his back, and all of a sudden he had some breathing space and instant relief from the pressure he had been under.
Since then he has spawned 2 titles with a Rangers Squad that has been littered with guys who would feature in many Gers fans' Worst XI to play in the blue.
I think Alex McLeish has been a lucky manager.
I still cannot get my head around him winning 2 out of the last 3 titles.
I think that luck will run out against Artmedia, whose players looked dead on their feet tonight with 20 minutes to go, but they managed to score a winner and hold onto the 3 points.
Rangers will not qualify for the Uefa Cup and will be lucky to finish 3rd in the league.
The mess Big Eck has got them into will take a while to sort out, which should be fun to watch.
-
Hi Paul,
Dialupcelt :- I hope you don't mind me disagreeing with you and with several others about the talent of A McLeish, I'll admit at times he seems to ride his luck but as you pointed out he win two titles with what many consider the worst Rangers team in years, and those titles were win against what has been recognised as the best Celtic manager and best Celtic squad in 30 years, while luck can win a cup I think it needs a lot more than that to win the title. Considering the financial restraints and standard of squad I feel he has done more than most could do under similar circumstances and that he is a far better manager than many give him credit for. As for progress in Europe, unless that defence gets sorted then I'm in agreement with you on that one.
Cavansam :- loved your headline earlier, it's god to see some Celtic fans recognise Mr Lennon is to blame for everything as well :)

Edwardursus
I actually agree that McLeish has done a whole lot better than anyone thought - however 2003 was the Seville year and I for one had a post-Seville glow which was more than sunburn, and the league was not the story of that season for us. Season 2004-2005 was not vintage Celtic, and we all knew the squad had fallen into disrepair.
However, any goodwill we had for McLeish disappeared when he made his incredible "120 years of unsurpassed dignity" speech - which many felt was an undisguised signal of his approval and validation of the institutionalised Scottish anti-Catholic hatred, for which Rangers was the flagship for most of the 20th Century. It was a rabble-rousing appeal to the 'fenian blood' brigade. For me, he marked himself as a fascist.
No offence to you personally, but that is my viewpoint.
-
Hi everyone...
Just came on to see whats what with the CL gone for another week, crickey its been a boring week in Europe. HAHAHA TFoD, ok so it wasnt a battering, but u were pish!
As for a few of the Barca comments flying around earlier, erm, do any of you guys watch Spanish football? Ronaldinho just got his place back in the team for Udinese, cos they thought they could've been in for a shock. Apart from the other night, they have looked second class all season, utter dross. They only beat Real Betis at the weekend because Betis got a player sent off for doing a DOUBLE rooney at the ref!!! I mean, doesnt he watch the TV? Surley he must have seen it?!
I have yet to see a team in the Champions League this season that really looks like they can win it. I dont know, its a case of the competition is still wide open. We really need to wait until the first group is finished, let the big boys get into their strutt then start to judge whos going to win.
Hail! Hail! Keep The Faith!
-
Seany bhoy-
You have just invented a new phrase-
A douuuble rooooooney !
Wow ! Can you picture that?
His ugly mug RIGHT in your face- TWICE !
-on the subject of Alec McLeish-
I always had a fair bit of respect for him due to hi record as a player with Aberdeen and Scotland.
He let himself down, badly, with his "dignity"speech but,in the days immediately after the death of the Pope-for him to attend a primary school in Drumchapel and crack jokes about the demise of John Paul 2-was crass ,blinkered and ignorant.
Yes ,he has been lucky.
Luck HAS to run out sometime.

Dick byrne - No Dick I heard it loud and clear. There was also a moment when the the camera panned onto the 200 or so corporate billy boys sitting with their blazers and ties on. For a moment I imagined they were replaced by sashes of the orange variety and there you have it the corporate billy boys for all to see.
Apparently there were about 200 hundred locked outside with only radios to tell them what was going on. If Celtic had been in a similar situation add another nought. Hope the local churches locked up early in case any of them were caught short.
The more I see Mcleish on the box the more I think how ungratious this man can be. His team did nothing tonight but head off a right good gubbing. A perfectly good goal chalked off set the tone for the penalty miss to follow.
Rangers IMO never looked like scoring indeed the Milan defenders looked very comfortable.
Can they beat Bratislava the anwser is yes they can. What they didnt have last night was any dodgy decisions going there way. Kyrakois and Dado poorshow were shown up for what they are fouling gits and when wee bazzafergushun goes up against decent players he seems to do a paul daniels awol, just like he did at blackburn.
On the subject is big feck lucky well that and the dodgy decisions in the spl help. In the seville year well Im in suttys corner. On last year there are no words, only to say our managers concentration was else where and quite rightly so.
Big feck could have been quite easily looking up at 5 in a row quite easily. Lucky, yip, with a git on the end.
Apart from that Im of course not biased in any way lol .
-
VertWolf, Rangers will qualify because Artmedia and Porto are v bad teams. Not only that but Inter are the worst of the Pot 1 teams and go to Ibrox on the last day when they will have already qualified.
It suits us (and Hearts, Hibs and possibly Kilmarnock) to keep them busy in Europe as they appear unable to compete on two fronts.
-
-
I think that the result from last night highlights one thing in the main.
Inter are riding high in the League and are on form. They are therefore one of the better teams from pot 1. It shows how difficult it is to play games behind closed doors for the home team. We should therefore expect Inter to struggle in the other 2 games at home (though they will get better with experience). Don't be surprised therefore if they drop some home points.
This weakens their position, but they know what they might need to do away from home and for them its about getting through so they'd settle for a second place finish.
Porto are a poor side currently and this will be a crunch game for Dignity FC.
All this makes the group wide open and it is perfectly possible for DFC to qualify. A draw in Porto and a share of points with Artyfarty is all that is needed.
None of this is of much importance except that it may well help our cause (winning the league) if they have more games after xmas.
The 2 extreme scenarios are:
Last in CL group
2 losses at CP, out the CIS and more off the pace
Likely that Captain Dignity wouldn't survive.
However, it could also go:
First Scottish Team to qualify from CL group stage
2 wins at CP meaning possible CIS CUP and back in the hunt for the League
Captain Dignity is hailed again as the man who can work miracles with Captain Marvinlous.
It's more likely somewhere in between if you take of the green tinted specs.
What price the Goram/Klos/McLeish luck factor?
I just hope WGS is up for the two final nails in the coffin pre-match planning and team talks
-
Paul67
It is also hard to argue with the fact that Rangers are a "v bad team", and as such may come unstuck against Artmedia and Porto. Also if Inter go to Ibrox with the same second string team as last night they could still win 2 or 3 nil.
I would agree with you that they don't have the squad to compete on two fronts (in fact at the moment it looks like they don't have the squad to compete in the league), however if history has taught us anything about Alex McLeish's time at Rangers it's this...Don't back them in Europe, against anybody.
-
Penalty miss, Inter goal chopped off for wrongly-called off-side and one of the worst misses I've seen in the champions league from Inter. A very comfortable victory for Internazionalé despite the sectarian singing clearly audible from the Rangers 'dignitaries'
The official '132 years of unsurpassed dignity' response from McLeish:
"Even without their fans, the referee gave them everything"
-
A little story of the night i encountered Mr McLeish,
I'm booked into a Hotel in St Helens the night of the Liverpool Uefa cup match in '97, prior to heading into Liverpool for the match, i thought i drop into the Hotel Bar for a quick snifter, and who is at the bar and on his todd, but the bold ginger one. Conversation went like this,
me to eck,, how do alec?
him to me,,,, (some what aggressively) how do you know me?
me to eck,,, eh your alec mcleish,,, being slightly embarrassed at being pulled up for saying hello and trying to diffuse the situation i then ask can i get him a beer.
He accepts and then decides to tell me and a couple of other Celts who have arrived at the bar that Celtic are in for a Champions League winning midfielder, well his exact words were " yooous lot are in for that Lambert "
Through out the story he kept referring to Celtic quite despairingly as Yoooooos Lot, to the degree that you had no doubts that he was not attending the match to cheer on a Celtic win, his condemnation for Lambert was also surprising, considering he had just become the first British player to win the European cup with a foreign team. His only concession was that he would be a better player than he was at Motherwell, but still very disparaging of both Celtic, not once did he say the word Celtic, just Yooous, or Yooous Lot and more so of Paul Lambert, ( i got the impression he felt Paul was signing for the wrong team).
Any way the next thing that happens is the bold one gets on his mobile phone to somebody, then, as if by magic, Andy Watson appears, and starts giving it the yes boss, no boss, 3 bags full boss, routine, the bold one then orders, not asks, orders, Watson to get a round in for the 2 or 3 celts gathered listining to him, this Watson does like some sort of bald wee beer monkey, but a beer monkey only capable of ordering Budweiser.
Moral of the story, McLeish thinks he's Tony Sopprano

Al Obundy, Michael__67, Dick Byrne
All of you are absolutely correct to bring up the sectarian singing by the 'dignitaries' of Rangers. They may have been 'dignitaries' but they lack dignity, and if Rangers did nothing or do nothing about it then they too lack dignity.
This must be the handful/minority of Rangers supporters that David Murray says do the sectarian singing and be the ones the Rangers, they tell us, are doing so much to remove from Ibrox, the same ones David Murray has said in the past he was ashamed of.
The lack of comment by the press/media will no doubt be all too audible. Even Graham Speirs has been without voice in this matter. Has David Murray’s attack on the press worked?
If this had been Celtic 'dignitaries' … well we are all too familiar with the outcry that would follow, follow.
On another matter but linked, after the punishment for NL was announced Graham Roberts was on Real Radio and he questioned why the 1st of the games NL was to miss was the League Cup game against Falkirk, he asked why was it the case that he was missing out a cup game and not three league games – the only reason he felt was it would allow NL to play against Hearts. So in his opinion the SPL, SFA and the Football League were in cahoots with Celtic to allow NL to pay not only more league games but to play in one of the most important matches of the season.
I ask, was he charged with bringing the game into disrepute? Is this not a massive instance of Rangers supporters paranoia?
The press do indeed play Russian Roulette by different rules when it comes to Rangers.
We must remember their lack of comment.
-
The press have had it in for Lennon since he came here, the ban he was handed was by the authorities full & final.... Was there as much fuss by the media when Ricksen kicked the Aberdeen player on the head last season....? I think not!!
P.S. As long as the fans stay united there will only be one winner and that is us.. My only suggestion is we Bhoycott all the Daily Rags and hit them where it hurts their pockets hopefully not b4 too long the like of Traynor/Keevins/Broadfoot etc....... all take paycuts or even better are made redundant because quite frankly they bore me to tears!!!
Happy Hoop
-
Today seems to be a slow day in the world of CQN, experience has taught me that playing the sectarian card tends to "liven it up" but it also alienates a lot of others so I will reserve it for more desperate times.
Paul67, you have a point in that the "Lets all laugh at Rangers" crowd will need to be cautious about what they say, McLeish is a quite successful manager for TFOD, I do believe a lot of it is down to luck, but with the degree of success he has had with Rangers, against probably the best Celtic side for 25 years, has to be acknowledged. If its all down to 'luck'...then FatBhoySlim, you should have asked him for lotto numbers because he seems to be one lucky guy!
That aside I still think he is two defeats away from the chop! What would happen if he is beaten two or three times in the league (and of course the CIS Cup) between now and the CL knockout stages (which I think they will make).
Do you think they would throw Eck to the wolves or stick by the man who has brought them the best run of results in Europe? Personally, I think Mr. Murray 'Lapdog to the bigot' would give in and decapitate McLeish

TBE,
Spot on with your post!
Mcleish if we are all honest has done very well with his hands tied behind his back the same as the great MON (I still miss him) :>(
Credit is given where credit is due and luck does come into it somewhere but I think thats why we love the game.
My only point being is they are awarded more penalties in the SPL than any other team??? Maybe even in England. Do you remember the season just b4 Bazza left he was top goalscorer because of all the penalties......
On the bigotry issue I will have no comment as we all know its not going to go away..........

-
TBE and Singapore Celt agree with both points there.
Can we stop worrying about Eck please. His record as a manager will stand the test as he has won trophies. All managers have their share of luck and all he has done is taken adavntage of what we as a club allowed him to do.
The press and bigotry, lets not expect them to change some time in the near future either. Its up to us and the club to control our communications, which is still a long way from being acceptable, let alone excellent. Paul's, JB's and a few others excepted of course!
BTW can anyone tell me who the 3 players who have signed new deals are? Can't access the feeshall website till 12 when the system allows it here at work.

Ok, We.ve agreed to save the Sectarian chat for another day.
But on the question I posed, If TFOD fall more than 20 points off the pace (which is a distinct possibility- considering they play us x2, hearts again, Sheep x2 and Hibs again) between now and the CL knockout stage on 21 Feb will Big *eck still be in a job?
Just interested to see what some people think.
