They're dropping like flies in the Rangers match (and no sign of Neil Lennon who will the press blame now!!).

30 minutes gone and three subs used already 2 for Hearts and one for Rangers.

Is it just me or is the officials giving Hearts the bare minimum when it comes to decisions? It seems like Mr. Clark has lost his cards; be it Namuchi(SP) taking a kick at a player or Prso with desent he seems desperate not to get the book out. Also the penalty which should have been was of the stonewall variety - hearts will now have to suffer the burden of being title contenders who are not the establishment club.

Great result today. i would rather be 6 ahead of rangers then 2 ehind Hearts at this stage. We will make up 5 on the Jambo's we have 12pts up for grabs against them. Beat them ttwice at home and once away. rangers will also take 6 off them at the two games at Ibrox. Better to be ahead of rangers the bigger the gap the better. OK 6.25am I have to get on my bike and get to the Abbey Tavern to watch the game.

    A conflict of intrests.....
......did i want the scum from across the city to win or the dirrrrty dirrrrtyy jam tarts (a.k.a the edinburghaaaa huns) to win; or would a draw be best fit for this crucial tie???

without a doubt i dont want the monkeys to win, i wud rather lose the league to hearts than rangers, but i cant seem to decide between a draw.. or a hearts win! either way i'm happy.

People scorn either side of the old firm for wanting there rivals too lose, but thats football; The very essence of what makes it the great sport it is, is the sheer passion felt for there team from the majority of fans! Any celtic fan who claims they would like to see Rangers lift, say, the champions league is either a women (we'll let them away with it, sport is not there thing; SHUTUP and get back in the kitchen women!!!) or they are a complete liar! Celtic fans dont want rangers to win and vice versa!

Well done the Jambos!! If we can beat Hearts in 2 weeks time then we will overtake them in January. If we beat the Huns then it's goodnight Vienna to the league and (sadly) Eck. I say sadly as they might stumble across a good manager -or ponce Burley from Hearts?

Anyway - it's all very exciting and plenty cause for celebration yet...unless you are a Hun that is!!

true fencelt, we are biased, but I get a tad bored with the presumption that every ref in the country wears a sash to bed at night. I know kenny clark and guess what, he's not a gers fan.

    HT 0-0

Excellent first half performance, only thing missing was a couple of goals. We made at least 6 clear cut chances and should be out of sight by now. ICT offering very little - can't see them doing much in the second half.

After a poor first 10 minutes we settled down an began playing the ball on the deck, pulling ICT all ove the park. Some great deliveries into the box from both full backs, Naka and Maloney.

Boruc - one good save for the cameras otherwise nothing to do
    Telfer - Excellent
McManus - Excellent - doing the simple things well and should have been on the score sheet
Balde - Strong in the air - generally not tested yet
Camara - Good performance - he has got his positional play sorted. Occasionally gets carried away with long surges up the park which lead to nothing.
Petrov - Quiet game - hope to see more of him second half
Maloney - Excellent. Working hard and getting some great service into the front men
Naka - Excellent. First touch is different class also starting to work harder to get possession
Sutton - good to see him back in the line-up with Hartson. Always likely to make a chance out of nothing. Playing well.
Beattie - Getting into some great positions - should have scored at least a couple
Hartson - Playing a target man role but not adding a great deal because of the way we are plating today. Patient build up, waiting for teh openings etc and BBJ is not needed in this style of play. Likely to score though second half given the quality balls coming into the box.

    Prediction 3-0 second half !

Could be described as a very comfortable 2-1 win. We were different class to ICT today and should have scored a barrow load. Good to see the bhoys finding an extra gear when we really needed it at 0-1. There is huge competetition for places now with Sutton and Agathe back. That can only be good for the side. Individual performances today IMO

Boruc - 7 Not much to do and couldn't do much about the goal
Telfer - 9 Great game by Telfer
Balde - 7 Steady performance. Commentators seemed to think he was to blame for the goal but I didn't see it that way
McManus - 8 Not sure why he got the hook. Suspect he was out there trying to run off a knock after HT but was struggling
Camara - 7 Pretty solid. Wish he would stop running down dead ends and get his head up more. Needs to play the bal simple
Petrov - 7 Had to play a Lennon role today and we missed his surging runs forward
Naka - 8 Great performance. Had a hand in both goals. This bhoy is going to get better and better
Maloney - 7 Great first half, tired a bit in second but a solid contribution
Sutton - 7 Not his best position IMHO but played well. Gives us something extra when he is out there and in the mood
Hartson - 6. Will be dissappointed that he didn;t get on teh score sheet today given the servoce teh fron men got.
Beattie - 8 - Good play by the big man and two good goals. Will be hard now for WGS to leave him out
Virgo - 6 Got caught cold for teh goal but settled in. Distribution is good. This bhoy may well become a regular after he gets settled in.
Agathe - Good to see him out there again for a couple of minutes

Three deserved points - onwards and upwards. Cheers Bhoys and Ghirls

I'm a bit confused. According to the commentators, Nakamura doesn't contribute much, but hasn't he had a big hand in a lot of the recent goals? Strange!

    Mr Driftwood,

My silence on the Kenny Clark non-penalty award was due to me being at the game. Let's face it, after last years Andy Davis carry on you always expect the worst.

Back to 'Tic matters, what is it about this team that it takes a goal against us for everyone to awaken from their sluggish inertia? Don't get me wrong, I would take the eventual outcome all the time but the most worrying aspect of today is that the game should have been long finished by the time Caley scored. We are wasting far too many chances and always seem vulnerable to a quick counter attack(coupled with farcical defending).
I'm sure this will be remedied quickly.
Despite the moans I am utterly delighted with the win. I must also admit to having a wee snigger at all the irate 'peepel' on the tranny!
The MMMMMMagners will go down a treat tonight.

    Happy days continue.............

Our friends in the media have shifted from predicting a Rangers rout in the league to predicting that Hearts could win it by a country mile. None seem willing to stick their necks out and say "That team from the East End who wear the Hoops could walk this!"

For the record, I am now sure that Rangers will finish 3rd. They are miles behind already and going backwards.

Still no credit to Celtic for bouncing back from a disastrous start, though, not that we'd expect different. WGS, unlike the Lord of Dignity FC, has shown tremendous serenity in the face of the firestorm. He must be telling the players "keep your cool as I've kept mine, and Champions we will be."

As to the cup draw; just what we all wanted, I suspect - the chance to deal Rangers season a killer blow before Xmas. Inter can rub further salt into the wounds by scudding them on Wednesday for us. Some callers on Radio Clyde are predicting McLeish will be gone before Santa comes. One of them had a fairly good rationale for that; Murray will have no choice if they are still on their knees (as opposed to being up to them) by then. Guarenteed no Champions League football would, I suspect, close the curtains over there.

I hope the last fan switches off the lights on the way out! Don't want the bank carrying the cost...........

BTW: I have totally forgotten what my password for this blog is. This computer remembers it, but I can't log in when I'm up in Stirling. Anyone know how to get it changed or retrieved?

    Paul,

Does this mark a turning point in your "are you pleased when Hearts win?" question?

I hope everyone is taking this team seriously now – they will be our main competitors for the championship this season. I have to say I was pleased at the result today, as it begins to look like Rangers will struggle to make the top two now. But I don’t want the gap at the top getting any bigger.

We will get stronger as the season develops. Our squad is now much more competitive, and the players are starting to gel with each other a bit more now. I hope Gordon is strong and picks players on current (not past) reputations. If so we WILL win the league.

Great cup draw by the way......

Hopefully the rapturous welcome he received today may persuade him to extend his stay.

As well as irate 'peepel' calling the James Moaner radio show, they are still discussing the 'Lennon issue'. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Give it a by.

-ditto what Jamiebhoy said for the
    "deafening silence".

Unless you have been living with your head in the sand you would have understood why we were expecting a penalty for rangers.

The last hearts v rangers game-
was there not a seriously doubtful
penalty awarded to rangers in the dying moments of that game?

The ensuing stramash saw young Mikolaunas of hearts given two red cards.

Too often in recent seasons have seen rangers awarded penalties when it was obvious to all that they were struggling.

Against Dundee,at Dens Park, were they not awarded THREE penalties in the ONE match?

You state that your pal kenny clarke is not a rangers supporter-

Since when-in this country-did you have to be a rangers supporter to be anti-Celtic?
Did you see the celebrations of motherwell, their coaching staff and their support on the last day of the league season ?

Did you see craig gordon, hearts goalkeeper, leave his area and go up for a hearts corner against Celtic-IN A TOTALLY MEANINGLESS GAME FOR HEARTS ?

Did you see kenny clark award rangers a penalty,at ibrox, after jorge albertz had jumped on Paul Lambert's face? knocking out several of his teeth, leaving him with a speech impediment and depriving Celtic of their best player at the time for several weeks.

Statisticians say that penalties usually even themselves out through time-I,m still waiting.......

Apart from Hearts winning, I was hoping for a draw, it was a pretty satisfying day.

Plenty of positives today, but I think BBJ is rapidly becoming a luxury we cannot afford. Contributed very little today.
Beattie was willing and eager and if he can find just a little composure in front of goal he will make himself an automatic start.
Telfer again impressed with his reading of the game and his willingness to get forward to set up some nice crosses.
Camara had a good steady game as did McManus, Maloney, Petrov, Sutton, Boruc and Balde although I though Bobo was a bit slow at the ICT goal.
Nakamura was the man of the match for me. Great skills vision and control. His first touch is a delight. Craig take note.
Lots of good positive passing play today and once we start taking our chances we will pile on the goals.
If we beat Rangers twice in November their season will fall apart. Shame isn't it.;-)

GlassTwoThirdsFull, you have called it correctly. Today I was very pleased that Hearts won. From now on they are our primary competition – I will not write-off Mr McLeish just yet, last season was a hard lesson – but I cannot see where his recovery is going to come from this season.

Good call Cultsbhoy, if January works out as it could, you might not be far off the mark.

Miss PennyPacker, Adam Virgo is destined to live through the tough Celtic Park audience. Your comments are totally valid, the lad will need games – he looked quite nervous every today.

Agreed! (which is why I've been noticably less vocal in my comment about our manager) :-)

    Hmmmm....
I think my glass is usually a bit fuller than those of most posters. James Forrest and the Fargo Family excepted, I think I tend to be a wee bit more positive in my thinking than most.

So, this is a new experience for me. I am quite surprised at the optimistic air today. The reason is, as Paul says, we are a work in progress. I understand that reality and the reasons underpinning it. However, I am struggling to see the PROGRESS part of the equation.

Easter Road last 55 minutes.....Wednesday, most of the game....today, for long periods it was the same thing. ONE player in midfield, opposition playing like they had all the time in the world, and WE CAME VERY CLOSE TO LOSING MOST OR ALL OF THE POINTS!!!

I'm shouting because I am frustrated. Frustrated because we had players who did not give 100%. This is pretty evident when you see the effort and off the ball movement that we got between their goal and our winner. Before and after that, we were not making the type of effort that we should be.

Since Hibs, we have had 2 fixtures that, on paper (yes I know...) were amongst the least challenging on the card. Yet, in both games we really did struggle. Badly.

I note that Fargo et al are really, really big on Virgo. Fair enough, but the departure of McManus turned Bobo into...er...well...Bobo. Not a pretty sight.

Poor Petrov, what an amount of ground he covered. On his own. Not getting much defensive help from Sutton, Nakamura or Maloney...all who did well in attacking.....but a one man midfield????

I'll end on a positive note. Hats off to Strachan for playing Beattie. Like many, I felt sorry for Craig on Wednesday. I thought that he had blown his chance. Even though Majic was injured, Strachan had other options. Yet he stuck with Beattie and got the reward. All credit to the player. His head could have dropped after missing those first half chances.

Anyway.....that midfield needs some serious sorting.

I was at the ICT game today .First half all Celtic plenty of chances CB and CS nearly scored. The change of McManus for Virgo was a puzzle was this due to an injury to McM? Any way Virgo IMO was at fault for the ICT goal being easily out jumped by their player to flick the ball on.Similarly later he was again easily beaten in the air but the keeper saved. He was skinned on the deck very easily and overall he looked heavy and slow. I know he has said that he has not played since May but how long has he been training for, he looks heavy and laboured.CS in the middle again does nothing for me when you need midfield players dont play your best target man there, it is not conducive to flowing football.SM good energy again a threat when running at their back lot.JH another rather inept performance, immobile and easily marked.CB missed a few chances but done the needful when required.I was quite annoyed at one or two individuals barracking MC he tries he is not the best but he puts a shift in and he does not hide. I wonder what these same supporters make of the contribution of JH CS NL AT who are held in almost untouchable status.Time for everybody to believe their eyes and dish out credit and criticism to all when it is due.Probably get pelters but you pays your money and it is only my opinion.

A good call by JohnM above - I haven't checked it out but it seems to me that Naka has been directly involved in a number of our goals this season - including both today.

Like many of our fans I viewed Naka as being a "Lubo-type" player but the more I see of him the less I think that is a realistic comparison.

Lubo was not averse to pushing himself into advanced positions to score goals whereas Naka seems to prefer to hold back a little and maybe sees himself as more of a provider. Dare I also say that Lubo had a bit of "devil" about him that Naka lacks?

Having said that, I am pretty encouraged by Naka so far. He does seem to be a more confident figure in terms of demanding the ball and he showed a fair amount of determination today to get that pass through to Beattie for goal No. 2. It was also good to see his team-mates rushing to congratulate him at the 2nd goal - they seem just as eager for him to do well as we are.

One final point about today's game at Tynecastle. Could none of the media pundits see the irony in Rangers complaining about not getting a late penalty? I thought it was a stonewaller (this time) - which just goes to make it all the sweeter, of course!

Today was a seriously good result. Not what I hoped for (3 or 4), but in the execution better than that. Craig is coming of age, maybe did today, Shaun isn't far behind.

A team that goes a goal down, doesn't panic, gets ahead, holds it. That'll do.

But not every week. Give us five soon Celtic, please. In November would be good. Twice.

And. Another game when the worst ever Celtic player wasn't the worst on the park. Astounding. Wish he could cross the ball though. Maybe he could take lessons from Didier.

For the second the game in a row, I have left Parkhead feeling a fair bit anxious. The flowing football has dried up. We badly miss Lennon and Thompson (God help us!!). Why was Lawson not given a chance and why was McManus taken off so soon after half-time? Is it any coincidence that they scored shortly after? Why was Agathe given only 5 minutes?
Still, now we have to keep winning and keep tabs on Hearts and see if we can repeat the joy of Love Street. What a day.

I was really looking forward to seeing Strachan's flowing, passing football. I left disappointed. We got the result which is all that matters but the performance did not inspire me.

When Chris Sutton held the ball at the corner flag on 85 minutes to waste time the guy beside me was shouting "This is not Barcelona we're playing - It's Inverness". Couldn't agree more.

I stress, we got 3 points and that's the most important thing but I've seen better.

He enjoyed the game today, but he was a bit frustrated that the goals came at the wrong end! I don't really think he seen them as he can't jump up anymore, but he was too polite to say.

I have to say, my dad has always talked sense about fitba. Over the years he's rarely been wrong about a player. He likes Maloney, loves Beattie, likes Magic and feels a lot better that Boruc is in goals instead of Rab.

I treated myself to the Traynor Greet-In after our game and I didn't believe you could have as much fun without leaving the armchair. Any Tim that responded to his Lennie baiting only served to increase his apoplexy and he shifted more goalposts than the groundsman at the Queen's Park Recreation Grounds as he tried to justify his rant. A straw poll of his colleagues before our kick off resulted in Traynor, McLeod and Smith calling for the death penalty (oh oh, don't mention penalties) and only Chick Young calling it as it is. Cheers guys, for the password recovery tips.

This "work in progress" of ours really is begining to look good, isn't it? The kids all look solid and sound, like McManus today who was excellent until he was taken off. In the attendant phase where Virgo was settling in, we lost the goal, which shows how well Stephen has settled in already.

Shaun needs goals, but he is brimming with confidence and has all the skill in the world. Likewise Aiden, who is not in the side right now but will be back. This, as I've said previously, is a big test for him after being lauded last year. When he regains his team place he will be mentally stronger and the better for his time on the bench.

And Beattie? What can you say except "Thank You Rangers" for deciding that this kid did not have it. He "has it" alright, and will only get better. It must disturb them greatly when they are signing all and sundry to make up for their lack of youth only to see some of the one's that got away, Duffy, McLean and our wonderkid, doing the business. Beattie looks like the oustanding young talent in the SPL right now. Incredible.

And Sutton is back. Agathe is back. Pearo is back. Kennedy soon will be. Du Wei will also be knocking on WGS's door soon asking for a game.

Three or four weeks ago, we were happy enough in light of the Dundee Utd win. But at the back of our minds were the questions; what about Hibs? What happens first time we go a goal down?

Those questions have been answered, the second of them twice in one week. The new question, and one worth grave consideration, is how we handle the coming visit of Hearts, this supposing, of course, that we don't blow a gasket next week.

Hearts are a tidy outfit now, and had Bednar not gone off today they'd have put Rangers away by half-time. He was running riot. And when he went off the whole rythym of their game changed. He is a key player, he and the big guy from Porto Jankauskas.

And let's not forget Paul Hartley.

But Rangers tactics today left a lot to be desired. They played a strange formation and an odd line-up. They ended up, again, with four strikers on the field at the end, proving once more that they lack a quality finisher. Jeffers certainly is NOT the answer there. So, they played into Hearts hands a little.

We DO have quality finishers, and options galore should one get injured. We also have a number of set-piece specialists, which Rangers don't seem to possess. We will hurt them more than Rangers.

Curiously, I also think we have a better defence than Rangers. I have long argued that an examination of their defensive signings will show that they don't stack up as a good unit. Bobo has reclaimed a place in the hearts of many fans and is playing well enough to justify his inclusion. If he has a blinder against Hearts and follows it up in the Rangers double header, all will be forgiven, at least from here.

    (Fickle, aren't we?)

Hearts, in short, will be tough. But they had a few injuries today and will pick some more up in the coming weeks. Burley knows they don't have adequate cover yet. Should they come to CP less than full strength, we will bury them, as happened to them during the week.

We continue to improve. Rangers have stagnated and are slipping down the league fast. Worryingly fast. If it goes TOO quickly they might sack McLeish before the avalanche reaches full speed! That would be a shame.

Anyway, bring the Jambo's on. We'll see who's REALLY going to win this league by a country mile, Mr Keevins!

Not posted in a while however have kept up with all the threads.

Was at the game today, pleased with the three points and we should have been out of sight by half time. After the ICT goal we upped the pace, the first goal was a cracker.... lovely passing move great finish by CB.

I think we could have introduced Lawson to let Stan move forward a bit however we got there in the end.
Camara had a good solid game as did Telfer. I thought Virgo got better as the game went on although to start with he was nervous.

McManus took a sore one right on half time from Bobo and I think he was maybe a wee bit concussed.

    Hail Hail

    Sir Paul and my Compadres,

I have carefully perused all of the criticisms regarding today's match...

Please allow me to voice my considered opinion, as to what I feel is Missing, in 75 percent of the critical Posters submissions.

    CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM!

I have to recuse myself from any of the judgments that I am about to pass.

    I am a Die-Hard Celtic Fan!

I can never ever see anything wrong in the Performance of a man wearing a Celtic Jersey!

The word "Criticism"is anathema when relating to my beloved Celtic

ENCOURAGEMENT is the word of the Day.

    My Mantra is always.....

    Praise the Sinner!

As my learned friend of a different religious persuasion is wont to say.... over and over and over again

"A little Sugar with the Coffee ......Can't Hoit!"

To get back to the main thrust of my submission.

I deem it nonsense to simply mention one or maybe two slip-ups during the game, then boldly write off the performance of that unfortunate man.

Then of course make useless comparisons of how "So and So" would have handled the situation that led to the faux pas.

Then to compound the insanity, go on the forecast the future career of that hapless individual.

Mr. Camara has been saddled with the term "Celtic's worst Performer" and inane comparisons were also a feature in sealing his doom.

To the guilty parties who have used this abusive term in describing Mr. Camara....... I say...Shame on You!( Now what I think of you privately...... is another matter)

No, my friends, this attitude of shooting from the hip in matters of condemnation of a new or young member of the Celtic Squad, needs a complete refurbishment.

    That attitude Stinks!

Mabel, spray that Perfume..... over there.... and there.....

I would be remiss if did not select Mr. James Forrest as my Fan for the Day!

James........ You have the soul of a Poet!

You my,friend will go to the Good Place.

A fair and gentle heart doth beat somewhere in the Forrest.

    Welcome reason4breathin, excellent handle.

Weeron, agree you need to look hard for the progress, but it is there. Maybe I am just grateful for small mercies.

Dessybhoy, give Virgo some weeks of first team football before judging. Think of Zurawski.

Dick Byrne, I am convinced that Nakamura will be best in a central midfield position – the place he was twice today when he setup two goals.

Parkheadcomesalford, McManus had concussion. Expect an extended run from Virgo now.

paul, why an extended run for virgo? is that your personal opinion?if so what has mcmanus done wrong to deserve to lose his place?the guy clearly isnt fit, he shouldnt be in the 1st team until he is. and i realise match fitness only comes with games blah blah, but surely the guy has to lose a few pounds in training and reserves before he can seriously be considered for a starting role?

Apart from Inverness away(where ICT were denied 3 stonewall penalties) Rangers have not picked up any points in the SPL without being awarded a penalty in a match or the opposition having a player sent off! Today we were yet again subjected to another terrible dive by "Super Barry" but rightfully enough the referee seen right through it and gave this terribly overrated player a yellow card. Onto todays game a win is a win and under a transitional period this cannot be knocked. Nakamura looks a fantastic player and could go on to become a legend! However the press seem to think it's a good idea to link him away from the club already even though the player say's "I love it here". Keep the faith!

    Paul,
I am sure that if I was to watch a tape of the game, I'd feel better. However, at the time, I could not believe that we were about to throw it all away. I can excuse many things, maybe even the lack of effort prior to their goal. However, I am bothered by pros who decide to turn it off like we did at 2-1.

Agree fully with you re Nakamura. Unfortunately, I think he'll be used mostly wide until we get a mid 3 that can do the job.

On the basis of McManus's performances, there is no evident justification for dropping him. That boy has proven me wrong, and played himself into the team. He has a good balance with Bobo, who now doesn't try and be a football, does his stopper thing, and moves the ball onto McManus, whose passing game is much better.

I note that many members of the Family Fargo (I am a fan of the entire Clan) are passionate supporters of Virgo...a guy that most (all) of us have seen virtually nothing of. I hope they are right. However, I would hope that in the short term this is not at the expense of Big Mick.

has anybody ever said to you - "see yourselself as others see you"? - well, check this out from the link that was sent to me from follow follow( sorry!)

    "We are Rangers
To quote Graham Souness our club is an 'Institution', and Dignity is what this Institution was founded upon and has conducted itself with since its inception"

you could not make this stuff up - in football terms they are, at a stretch, an institution given their trophy count. however, given their fan base, and the doctrine that murray still defends they are at best negligant of social awareness, at worst guilty as sin of racism which the BNP would be proud of.
i never heard one offensive chant at celtic park today, could the same be said at rangers champions league game against porto, it was 90 mins of bile from what i could hear. i dont want this post to sound like we have the moral high ground, however we, in my opinion are more "loyal" in our support than our good friends over the water given that we generally stand by our team win lose or draw, they however go cataclysmic when they lose a couple of games on the bounce, - is football not supposed to be competitive or is it all about superiorty for them?

    My dear friend, Weeron,

    Thanks for the commendation.

That being said..........let's clear the decks......

    Subject under discussion....

What do I see in Virgo that evidently, many of the other estimable members of this venerable celtic refuge, do not...

I have had the privilege of viewing The Scouting Tape, containing many previous outings of MR.Virgo.

It had been assembled for the perusal and consideration of the Celtic Management.

This tape was very professionally done, with particular spliced examples of several of the features, that the Celtic Scouts had found in Mr. Virgo, that were much to their liking.

It served as a support for their professional judgement that the player
involved was an excellent long term prospect.

It therefore behooved the Celtic Management to take a long hard look at the likely Lad.

Well after viewing the aforementioned movie....... the Celtic Bosses, were obviously impressed.

The rest of the story is history.

My take on what I saw on the tape, was nothing short of Sensational.........

The guy was a one man band!

He can play as a defender, a midfielder , a striker..... you name it..... I will feed it!

Now I have said this elswhere......

Virgo is a BIG STRONG LADDIE!

    I shall repeat it slowly,

    V I R G O I S A B I G S T R O N G L A D D I E!!

Several of the posters are under the misapprehension that Virgo is... Fat or Carrying Too Much Weight!

If he is... then so is GODZILLA~~

My advice to the Thomases among us.........

    Patience! Patience~

    There you have it,weeron,buddy!

    Really a no-brainer!

I believe what I saw and ineluctably, the Celtic Wisacres are of the same ecstatic opinion, on of the prowess of Mr. Virgo!

    Set... Match... and Game!

    MissPennypacker,
do give my best to Hyacinth. It's been a long time since she visited us.

What you describe sounds like a young Chris Sutton. If that's the case, I can't wait! Mr. Strachan will have to pick his spots and timing when it comes to bringing players in. Not so long ago, any living, breathing body would have been welcomed in our back 4.

Since that time, however, Varga has gone, don't know where, but wherever it is, it's better than having him in our defence. McManus has come in and surprised many of us. Not only has he improved his own game, but I think he has had a good influence on Bobo. What works is the balance between their quite differing approaches.

If Virgo was bought to replace Bobo, then the manager has a bit of a dillema. Bring in Virgo for Bobo while McManus is still relatively green? Bring in Virgo for McManus and upset the balance - having 2 stoppers?

    It's a tough one.

If you've seen the tape that we have not, then please forgive us for commenting on what we HAVE seen, which is not much, I agree.

I look forward to you being very right::)

most of these chances have fallen to lennon and we know where they went.
wea are making progress wins are wins.
Gordon looks like he can walk the walk.
My big concern is that Gordon doesn't get blinded by his comradeship with Telfer, because Agathe has walked the walk.

A good day all round for Celtic. The question of what will happen if we go one down has been anwsered. Would we have gone one down in the first place if we were not forced to change the back four?. WGS took the right decision if he felt young Macmanus was suffering slight concusion.

I have no doubt there must be some pressures maybe within for him to play his signings ie Virgo and Du wei. He got it right with Boruc IMO and with time (do we have time) hopefully he will with the two above.

Mr Virgo clearly needs a confidence booster, remember how nervous you felt on your acting debut for the school play ?, think mine was some old geezer, alan adale or something , imagine the feelings Virgo has.

The question must be raised though do we have enough time before the jambos come a calling, the anwser must be no. Virgo may or may not be the future for us at the back, only time will tell.

Its that word time that keeps poping up, if wgs plays it right, we IMO will take the accolades this year. Rome wasnt built in a day, it might have been if WGS was the foreman.

    1.11 am Jack

Rangers' claims for dignity is an interesting recent develoment. I think it's a response to being willing to begin to tackle bigotry by some at Ibrox that they have to blank out and cover over 80 years of active discrimination against professional footballers from a Catholic background.

I still believe that an apology from Rangers and the SFA will come one day. (And isn't sickening the way that some of the media have shown themselves up by being wiling to join in with the racist and sectraian persecution of Neil Lennon in Scotland and parts of Ireland)

You were wrong to try and claim the high ground though and seem to have a high tolerance for offensive songs. We again had a run out Roamin' in the gloaming at Celtic Park on Saturday and wasn't it from the singing section?

If it was we at Celtic now have a section of the ground where, officially organised by the Supporters Assocation and sanctioned by the Club, fans feel free to promote sectarian bile at Celtic Park.

The words of the song being sung were

    Roamin in the gloaming
With a shamrock in my hand
    Roamin' in the gloaming
    With St Patrick's Fenian Band
    When the music stops
F*** King Billy and John Knox
Oh it's good to be a Roman Catholic.

Does anyone know if the Singing Section sees itself as anti-sectarian?

Our stance should be a paraphrase of David Murray - For every five sectarian songs chanted at Ibrox we will not sing any at Celtic Park.

Wasn't it refreshing to hear the response Agathe received when he came on?
I presume it has taken 2 months of Camara and to a lesser extent Telfer to show ALL the faithful doubters what a absolute jem we have in Didier!
Played in thr right of midfield with the protection of Telfer behind him, Agathe will begin to solve some of our midfield problems. Leaving Lennon and my personal favourite (but not everyone's cup of tea) Thompson with just one position to fit into.
As said previously it was a big day for Craig Beattie. Well done Craig.

The keep the faith site is descrbing Virgo as ponderous, overweight and short of match fitness. He does look like a beefy type guy who will have to watch his eating habits etc etc. Im sure wgs however will have his finger on the pulse and be taking into account his recent surgery etc.

I mean how long does it take to get fit these days. When I played at the highest level (altar boys u12s} it was about half an hour. It seems to be a slower process these days, I hope that Virgo can show us the form and qaulity for the faith wgs and others clearly appear to have in him.

    Your point is History reader?
Is it The F*** King Billy and John Knox?
    or the
Oh it's good to be a Roman Catholic?
What line is it exactly, in this wonderful, catchy, light hearted, possibly a trifle triumphant little ditty, that annoys you so?
In the old when we had to keep our heads down to keep our jobs and feed the family it was at parkhead and travelling to away games in wonderful, beer filled coaches, bursting at the seams with men, boys, songs of love, romance, nostalgia of times at our mother's knee when inexplicably she would shed a tear at songs end and when asked why she was crying her answer was a kiss to fevered brow.
What exactly is your point Historyreader?
That we are like them? and would want to wade up to our knees in it?
    Tell me Historyreader
What is your point ? Have I missed it or have taken one 2 many amber coloured angels' teardrops today?
I am proud to be a Tim.
But, never, have I forced it upon anyone, except maybe in the Jungle when I knew that I was among the tribe.:-)

Brian 10:02pm you had a smile when you met Bobby and Bertie at the airport.
The Galashiels Supporters Club with Celtic FC had a Lisbon Lions roadshow on Friday night. Bobby, Bertie, Tommy Gemmell and Joe McBride attended and what a night, we also had a link to Jimmy Johnstone as the night was a charity event for Motor Neurone.
Bertie and Tommy gave a talk about their footballing lives and they were brilliant, lots of stories about Celtic and Scotland.
The best £22 I have ever spent.

I think GS is doing the right thing by not making wholesale changes to the defence.

Really pleased to see Maloney and Nakamura do some damage. Every time either of these 2 had the ball I felt something could happen.

Fnal point. What about Sutton in midfield?
IMO he is not good enough to earn a place in midfield and shouldn't play there.
I was very disappointed in CS attitude a couple of times yesterday.
On one occassion he actually turned his back and walked back to central midfield while Maloney was in a tight corner and CS was the nearest Celtic player.
The wayI see it CS is a striker or possibly cetre half.GS should not go down the road of MON by trying to fit him in somewhere.
On Wednesdaty we saw the advantage on having BBJ as sub, bring him on if needed and get a positive reaction. No player should be an automatic choice.

I would say that Roamin in the gloaming does not fit your descrIptive definition of 'songs of love, romance, nostalgia of times at our mother's knee when inexplicably she would shed a tear at songs end and when asked why she was crying her answer was a kiss to fevered brow'

If my mother heard me singing that she'd have whacked me round the ear.

    Ah the good old days.

Celtic is supposed to be a Club that welcomes anyone of any religion or no religion or anyone of any sect within Christianity. Just to point out that some people find the villifying of dead religious leaders eg King Billy, John Knox, the Pope at football grounds offensive. To some Celtic supporters FKB or FJK is just the same as FTP.

    Don't you agree?

Good to see Celtic (and Rangers) supporting the Asian football touranment again. The final will be on October 2nd at Celtic Park. Uusally admission to the South Stand is free. Not sure of the kick off. Standard of most of the players isn't great but commitment first class.

Well I never found it much fun, those things ye kneeled on used to play havoc wi my knees. Being an altar boy wasnt much fun either as I recall but particpation expected and to top it all it was fish on a friday I hate fish. No im sorry the nostalgic aspects of roaming in the gloaming with a shamorck ended up with the chaffed knees and duffle coat, binned.

By the way how many people have actually roamed in the gloam lately.

Celtic open to all unless your Danish ,I hate the danish, hoging all the best bacon grrr.

Just catching up with the posts from yesterday and last night.

Is this true that some have resorted back to singing "roamin in the gloamin"?

Please please tell me that this isn't true.

It is an offensive little ditty mainly because it betrays that we have a core who are as every bit as ignorant as many other club supporters in this country.

I thought we had moved on and as a support had finally embraced the 21st century (anyone remember the FIFA and UEFA awards?)

Why don't we go one step further and get the singing section to translate it in to Polish, Japanese, Chinese and French and then we can make this incomparable song of wit and subtlety open to our new fans in Europe, Asia and Africa.

I can hardly wait for the religious and political significance of the reformation and the 17th century English/Dutch monarchy to resonate on the streets of modern day Tokyo and Shanghai.

There are enough "Official" Celtic songs to sing without having to belt out FKB type crap. This is just the type of stuff that allows commentators to use the "One side is as bad as the other" argument which we all know is not true.
The atmosphere on a Champions League night is second to none and you NEVER hear "Roamin in the gloamin" type stuff. In fact, in general you never hear that type of crap at Celtic Park anyway.
As Martin O'Neil alluded to last year when he suggested that we have to win the games ourselves as we will get no favours from anyone, we need to be whiter than white on this subject.
Rangers can belt out their sectarian crap for a full 90 minutes, but one song from us like "Roamin in the gloamin" will have the old "One side is as bad as the other" guff trotted out.
The up and coming double header against Rangers is a good time to hammer home that one side is not as bad as the other.
Let Rangers sing their sectarian crap , and we should belt out all our wide range of Celtic anthems; and we have plenty of Celtic songs to sing.
Celtic as a club are not interested in bigotry or divisionism so let our songs reflect that.

    Right then lads:

First off.My regards,Misspennypacker to you and your esteemed employer Fargo!

Adam Virgo___My first impression was one off a lad who needs games to buck up his confidence, however.as the second half wore on he began to take on an air of presence, and i look forward to him playing a full part as the season goes on.

Stephen Mcmanus___just prior to half time both he and Bobo had an almighty clash off heads while going for the same ball. Not a pretty sight.WGS after match comment went something like Stephen tried to kid us he was alright, but he was concussed, and his health comes first.

Now the big admission___at the start off the season i stated categorically that the same lad would just not hack it.Hands up, 100% wrong!

The improvement in his alround play since the motherwell game has been a real eye opener! He now attacks the ball in the air with real purpose, and puts his foot in where it hurts. As Fargo would say I doff my fedora to the lad!

Arthur Boruc___what a find!Never in all my {and there have been lots off them}years, has a keeper instilled such confidence in the stands!

And finaaly whats wrong with the father and grandfather section.I have a real soft spot for people in those categories,i leave the rest unsaid.

    FOOTNOTE:
Got to go round all eighteen holes yesterday. It was tough, but, managed it in 115 shots.Good going EH!My playing companions have also assured me that they will allow me to play the last five holes in addition to the first thirteen played today! Can't be bad!

I think the reaction on this site to the singing of the above mentioned song, shows how far we have come as a support. Not too far back in the past approx 90% would have been in favour of this kind of song, now i believe the opposite to be the case.We are getting there IMHO.

General feeling over the last few weeks is that the team is beginning to gel a bit more and is setting out to hold possession more.

I was never a believer in the hype that under MON we were a "long ball" team - too many great performances like Lyon, Anderlecht, both Juventus games, Barcelona and the 6-2 mauling of you know who belied that we were a "punt it long" team.

However it was true to say that the ball moved directly from back to front on many occasions and by-passed the midfield and often this was successful but last year too many teams had got wise to it and were taking points off us when two or three years earlier they wouldn't have got a look in.

Now we are moving in a different direction with lots of keep ball, slow possession and what appears to be a less direct throw it in high and fast approach.

I get the impression that WGS and the coaching team are trying to impress upon the players the need to play this way as opposed to what has gone before and once that sinks in then hopefully they will get to work on the players to play that way BUT at a much higher tempo.

It seems that we have the possesion game but there is a lack of a high tempo possession game just now and once that comes then things will swing in our favour.

You seem to have an advantage over the rest of the Celtic brethren.
All of us can only comment on what we have seen so far of Mastor Virgo.
You have seen more than the rest of us.
Only those with blinkers on, would not be concerned with what we have seen of him in a Celtic jersey.
I am also wary of basing any opinion on any player, based on a promotional video.
It seems only too obvious to point out, that these are made to highlight the players strengths, and will not show any of his weaknesses.
We are lacking muscle in the midfield, but not in the back four when Bobo plays.
McManus has improved, but has not yet proven himself over a long enough period of time ,for me to be fully relaxed about him.
Fir Park apart, he has done OK.

Bobo has been magnificient ever since the fiasco in Bratislava.

Mastor Virgo has a long, long ,way to go to prove to me that he can be a Celtic stalward.

Like BBJ, he seems the type who will need more matches that other players to get fully match fit.

Your request for patience with him ,seems haveto been successfull ,among the Celtic brethren on this site.

Only time will tell,i have huge doubts about him at this stage.
I do not see him fitting in with Mr Strachans philosophy of football.

As yet, i have not seen anything in the player that makes me think that he is technically gifted.
As yet he has not shown any great level of composure that is required to pass the ball quickly and accurately.
As yet ,and i will be kind to him here,he has not yet shown that he has any modicum of decent pace.
He has has been responsible for a clumsy challenge, which was responsible for the penalty conceded at Dunfermline. He was posted missing for the ICT goal yesterday.

You are correct however to request that some patience be afforded to the a the young man .

For those of you who read and this think that this is typical of Tiny Tim , i would say you must look at the overall picture.

I will point out ,you have not seen me posting ,casting similar doubts about Naka or Majic or "the great big Pole in the Goal."

My comments are based on what i see in a player and this one concerns me,along with both Telfer and Camara.

Lets hope in a few weeks time ,i am posting to congratulate you on your judgement.

    MADMITCH
I really, really do want to be wrong about Mr Strachan in general.

I think you posted on Friday and quite rightly made reference to my dislike of Mr Strachans personality by quoting my " arrogant wee smart arse" comments about him ,from some weeks back.

On reflection the comment is too personal, however he does act like this at times, and therfore i am sure ,i am not the only person who has thought this about him.

You are correct there is something about the mans persona that i just don't like.

However ,I WANT HIM TO SUCCEED.

I want to be able to say to everyone ,I WAS WRONG ABOUT GORDON STRACHAN.

Celtic are far to important to me,for me to put my personal need to be correct or to like someone ,ahead of Celtics success.

I live and breath for my wife ,daughter and The Celtic.

    HistoryReader,
While I cringe when I hear that paticular song I think we need a sense of proportion.I am seated in the south west corner which is only a few blocks round from the so-called singing section in Block 141.Cant say I heard the aforementioned song being sung.to be honest didnt hear very much being sung.Wasnt as if 60,000 of us were pouring out bigoted bile.OK,one singing it is too much but a few pointed remarks should quiten this tiny minority.

I wish those people who like to sing roamin in the gloamin, and other such undeniably sectarian songs, would find another platform to perform. I come to Celtic Park to watch my team play football and I'm sure our many Protestant players do not want to hear how great it is to be a Roman Catholic. Likewise the rebel singers. I accept that they are not sectarian, but again, find another platform to spout your perfectly legitimate political beliefs. You only allow the press to bang on about the O** F*** problem. Why can't we just support Celtic and leave the provocative songs for another time and place? Until we stop hating Rangers, we can never leave them behind.

Toot toot…, “what has McManus done wrong”… he has suffered concussion and will be subject to the mandatory 3 week lay-off. I believe that having paid £1.5m for Virgo Stracnan feels there is something in the player and will now give him an extended run.

History Reader, you information on the Singing Section at Celtic Park is well wide of the mark. The Supporters Association and the club have agreed what should be sung, down the songs and the specific words. Nothing less would be tolerated at our club.

Al Obundy, ask any professional footballer and they say the same about match fitness; it takes matches, not training to get there.

Songs with reference to the IRA have no place at Celtic park.

A small but vocal minority at yesterdays match from the general direction off the singing section, displayed a complete lack off respect for the club and supporters ,by indulging in these songs yesterday.

Might i suggest that members off the singing section exercise some control over those individuals who would bring the club down again, to the level off that from across the city,by either nipping things in the bud,or,by having the persons responsible removed from that area!

Over the last 10 years there has been a great improvemenr in the songs sung at CP.
10 years ago this discussion would have been a lot more difficult.
As a support we are growing up.
One of the main differences between Celtic and Rangers is that first and foremost we support Celtic.
A large number of Rangers fans seem to live to hate us and other teams before supporting their own club.
As long as we don't become complacent (we have some nutters as well )Celtic will always be a more welcoming environment as we exclude no one.
Wouldn't it be nice to show them up on live TV as biggots and rascists by not singing anything iffy.

Agree completely. Why in the world would we want to be judged by Rangers standards? Leave the hatred to them. they wallow in it. They're sinking in it. Celtic (NOT on the other hand, as we wish eventualy to be nothing to do with them) must prepare to truly embrace diversity. this is the 21st century - Celtic have nothing to fear from this

Best to ALL who love the Celtic
