Strachan insists Celtic are nowhere near his vision yet

I find it genuinely fascinating to watch Celtic transform from a team that drove us into boredom during so many long afternoons last season into something new.

Thompson in the middle, Petrov out right and Aiden on the left produced lots of effort, but nothing inspiring. Did we have the least creative midfield in the league? Maybe not, but it sure felt like it.

Thankfully Craig Bellamy arrived to relieve us of what was surely the most one dimensional forward line in Celtic history. Sutton and Hartson are both fine strikers but using them together confirmed our lack of options, or perhaps more tellingly, a lack of confidence in our options.

Then came the knockout blows; O’Neill leaving and Bratislava. I was less upset at the loss of the league. We all knew we were a poor team and three points at Fir Park would not fundamentally change anything. The loss of the manager and the most painful defeat in my lifetime put the club on the ropes.

Can you think of a bigger test for a new manager to deal with?

When Gordon Strachan was asked today if things were coming together with his team he was candid in his answer, “We are nowhere near my vision of how we should be playing.

“I want a team that can compete with the best.”

Unlike the start of the season, he refused to be drawn on what that vision was, perhaps mindful that at Celtic, publicly stated objectives often turn into material to be used against you.

It is a credit to the club, but more importantly, to the Celtic fans, that the manager has been given time and support to recover from Artmedia and impose his vision on the club. As Strachan himself said today. “On my gravestone it will say ‘This is better than that night in Bratislava’”. Fans of other clubs would want a league winning manager sacked this far into a difficult season.

We go to Livingston tomorrow knowing that our system is a work-in-progress, and that we have only the beginnings of the personnel needed to play to the new design. We can expect another hard game against a team who have now recovered from their own early season malaise.

Alan Thompson is still out injured, and there are a couple of unnamed players who might not be in the starting eleven due to niggles picked up during the week. Nakamura Shunsuke will play despite missing training yesterday.

    Hi Paul67 & All..

Agree with what your saying Paul67, totally! WGS is turning out to be quite the man, eh? I was never sure tbh, but I think its time to take my hat off to the wee man.

As for the Keano debate, OMG, I would pick him in any team!!!

    Hail! Hail!

Strachan still has a mountain to climb. He knows this and I hope the fans know this and give him the required backing.

I have no doubt we will get 'there' ('there' being league champions and European credibility regained)but it will take time - maybe another two to three years for the European aspect.

I like Strachan. He seems genuine and his footballing ideology is one that a Celtic supporter can subscribe to.

AS much as MON is a saint in my eyes, he left WGS with a mountain to climb. As long as we climb the mountain in unison we will ultimately succeed.

Keane must be signed in January. It would be a huge boost to our very own team and a massive dent into Hearts challenge to us. He would be a perfect example on and off the pitch to the young players at paradise and imagine the fans clamour to see him in the hoops. With him and possibly Ian Harte in at left back it would make our team more balanced with Du Wei hopefully by then developed into the player that everyone hopes he is. GS sounds like he knows what he wants and lets hope he gets it right and bring the treble home for a start! Hail Hail

    Paul,
Did any of our esteemed Fourth Estate ask the direct question of WGS about Keane? If so what was the response? Either Keevins or the Real Radio sports guy was threatening to do so this morning.

strachan has issued a HUGE no comment about keane. it wouldnt be fair on him, us, man u etc...

off subject, but does anyone have the herald code. sorry if i am not allowed to ask for this but have not been able to see the sight for a while so dunno of its frowned upon.

Sixtaeseven, Zurawski was one of the ‘unnamed’.

    Agree, bigtrainpete.

Vclix, thanks for asking me a question about the Man Utd player that I can muster some interest in.

Yes, the fourth estate opened with such questions and Gordon Strachan said “I have never discussed players at another club and I am not going to start now”.

When pushed with more questions in this vein he said, “Anything I say will just give you a cheap headline, so I have nothing to say”.

For what it is worth, I think Gordon has more on his mind than taking a flier on a 35 year old player in ten months time.

I think this site has contributed alot towards GS being given time, applause all round.

On the Keane issue, Celtic are on a hiding to nothing on this. The media will slaughter us no matter what:

1 If we sign him, then we are mugs for signing an old hero who issued a come and get me plea.

2 If we don't, then we are mugs for passing up an opportunity to sign a player who has issued a come and get me plea!

Could be worse, it could be Alex Rae issuing the plea....

If Keane was to sign for Celtic how many games do people think he would play a season. I certainly wouldn't want him on a 2 year deal and would expect his wages to decrease to at most third of what they are just now (assuming they are around £60,000/wk) before I would be happy about him signing for Celtic.

Keith Jackson Exclusive: Strachan refuses to deny Keane claim! We must be taking him then eh Keith?

I haven't posted on this site for a while but I have been 'keeping my oar in' with regards to what has been said.

Must say I am very heartened by the increasing degree of backing for WGS now. He seems to have immersed himself in this job and is expecting his players to do the same with increased training schedules etc. Good on him and I think there is proper team-play being shown now, rather than a lot of individuals on the park which is what it seemed like a lot of the time last season.

Roy Keane: I think this would be a good move provided the wages are right. If he is so desperate to play for his 'boyhood heroes' then he won't have a problem dramatically lowering his wage demands, will he? anyone? Bueller?

Would be good for at least a year in my reckoning and his experience would be invaluable to the younger guys.

    We'll see!

Going from what i remembered from WGS Southampton days, and what happened to them (similar to Leicester with MO'N?) it was always going to be the case we would see a Celtic that was more familiar to us (but not as effective aka successful for anyone in my generation mid 20's, i think the style of football we played under mo'n is being exaggerated here, it was only last season which may be warranted)
    Here comes my controversial tuppence.
On footballing ability alone, i would love Roy Keane.
Only with Roy Keane its not just footballing ability, i dont want the guy anywhere near the place, he has divided his/our country in two, i dont want to see the same with our club.
We dont need someone strutting into the place as if we owns it, bossing people about, acting as if he owns the place and knows better than everyone INCLUDING the manager.
Their will be no more meals out for Shanshuke with Mr & Mrs Hartson, no more team bonding with evenings out, no not if their is a match in the next 3 weeks..
He thinks he is bigger than his country, why wouldnt he think the same with a football club that he has supposedly supported as a boy despite admitting he was a Spurs fan.
We have seen the shocking and deliberate career threatening tackles, and one career ending tackles against normal clubs, what would this ticking time bomb be like at Ibrox, can we say we would be confident of seeing him last 90 minutes? Thats just 1 old firm game, we could play them 6 times!

Although I have been supporting Celtic for over 45 years and a season ticket holder for over 20 of those I feel that if Keane is signed I will not ever visit Celtic Park again. I seriously believe that with his association in the Miller affair [real or perceived] a sizeable nuber of Celtic fans would feel the same. Signing him would be one step too many. Hopefully GS sees him for what he is a selfish self centred and thoroughly unlikable individual [not a team player at all]

I don't get up as often as I would like but I am really enjoying seeing this Strachan team develop . The possession football and interpassing is great to watch.

However we haven't really been challenged by any quality as yet and may not be until next season in Europe.
Hopefully by then a fully bedded in system with everone knowing their part will allow us to compete as a passing /possession- football team who can change the tempo of a game when needed. This is the route to success in Europe.

MON had us punching above our weight thru fantastic man management . Strachan is focussed on coaching us into a very attractive looking system.

Go for it with my wholehearted blessing.

Very soon someone is going to take a pounding . I'd like to see the stats regarding shots on and off target . My gut/heart/brain tells me that we are creating a huge number of unconverted chances and that will change as we get more composure from Beatts and Maloney in the goalscoring positions.

As for Keane...how many "first on the team list" Man Utd players would you turn down for Celtic ?
At the right price I'd take him. Even if a piece of me says we're too good for cast offs---head should rule the heart.

    Danny,

    You say it right.

We should be investing in younger players with even dispositions.

Mr Keane should retire gracefully when his Man U contract is up.

If he wants to do something meaningful for Celtic then let him buy a mountain of shares.

We need to move onwards and upwards.

Ver interesting to hear you say Paul that you were less upset at losing the league than you were when MON left. I've been supporting Celtic for nearly 30 years now and the loss of the league at Fir park on the last day of last season for me was the worst ever. Nothing comes close, maybe Maurice Johnston defecting to Rangers in 89 comes the closest. The one that tops both of them - the worst football related bad feeling I've ever had -was the death of Jock Stein, that felt literally like a death in the family. Neither MON leaving last season or Bratislava comes anywhere near those 3. Just goes to show the diversity of thought amongst the people that support Celtic.

I would be very surprised if Magic was in the squad for tomorrows game. A poisoned toe has to be watched very carefull as do all cases of physicall poisoining. Step up young Beats once more to the breach. As I stated previously Keane yip but only for a greatly reduced wage. He will only get once chance now to play for his boyhood heroes lets test his resolve with 5-8 grand a week and a chance to take on a coaching role. His experience would be invaluble to the younger players.

Keane- forget him. Although he hasn't mentioned Celtic outright this time I do feel it is a tad arrogant(Keane.. never) to 'expect' to finish his career at the club. I agree with Tom 64- onwards and upwards. If he was around the 30 mark then OK, but now, no thanks. I also think he would provide challenges to WGS in the dressing room. He's already shown that he has no qualms about causing a stir, and with the Scottish media as it generally is, then a stir would be found.

On then media front, anyone seen this

You know the more i listen to WGS the more my confidence grows.

His admission that we are no where near his vision of how he wants us to play sends out all off the right signals.I think i now understand what has been alluded to by certain individuals on this site for the past couple off months.

On the Roy Keane position i think that a lot off people are jumping to a premature conclusion.

My feeling is that he has fired a negotiating bullet at the old trafford board in order to crank up his bargaining position, and that they will reach an agreement which sees him ending his playing career, and then taking up a coaching position with them.

Paul is right WGS has other priorities at this stage!

If he does not agree a new contract then lets talk about it then.

4-1 the bhoys tomorrow.Maloney, and Hartson to share the goals.

PBTL123 - Diversity of thought indeed . My worst moment watching Celtic was the defeat by Raith Rovers in the League Cup final at Ibrox a few years back, legs went to jelly, as they did on the last day of last season. Though losing an EC semi to Inter on penalties then having to attend my non-denominational school the next morning (when they the other mob had qualified for their European final the same night) has never left me . I'll be honest though, every defeat hurts like hell .

Got a call from Setanta customer services yesterday saying that as I previously was a subscriber to their services (last season) they were going to offer me a discounted rate to take it up again (£10 per month).

They asked why I cancelled it at the end of last season, so I told them in no uncertain terms. The ladies reply was "I know what you are saying, we have had a lot of people with the same grievance".

Sounds like there might have to be a change of commentary team soon. Setanta must be getting pretty low on subscribers if they have to resort to this kind of tactic!

Sevilleant, you are thinking along the same lines as me. We are watching a team develop in a manner we have not seen before. When MON done it in 2000 it hit us for six, but the changes underway at the moment are different, with a different gestation period.

Hoopiness, I can cut ‘those’ fans a bit of slack, just as I can cut Gordon Strachan some. Those were historically difficult times.

PBTL123, I was so full of hope for this season with all the money I knew we would spend and the Uefa coefficient, that I got over Motherwell quickly. The subsequent matters affected me more.

Celtic Cross, Raith Rovers was just one in a death of a thousand cuts for me back then. I was too young to remember the Inter Milan game in 1972.

Yes we may play some nice stuff now and again (not nearly enough)but teams just run through us.

I still cant fathom out why Paul would say Artmedia was worse than black Sunday?? To qualify for the CL would probably have done more harm than good if mediocre SPL teams waltz through us what on earth would good teams do?

Is it solely financial?? To me nothing on the planet is worse than gifting them the title, sorry nothing!!

Got to agree. Gift wrapping and handing over the league on bended knee last season was a real killer. Depressed for about 2 months.

The nature of the Atrmedia stuff is less important. We could have lost on away goals to Milan. At the end of the day we're rebuilding and losing in Europe has been part of that.

Anyway what I wanted to say was I hope Roy Keane does not get anywhere near the doors of Celtic Park. Does he think we run a retirement home? I'm sure he would love to play in front of 60,000 every other week whilst being well past his best and injury prone to boot, who wouldnt. But Celtic dont owe him anything, take a hike Roy, you were a great player in your day but we are a club going forward and you dont feature anywhere near our plans for the future.

Just wanted to thank those (paul et al) who did up-dates for the Aberdeen / Hibs / Falkirk / ICT games as if you know the BBC scroll it is a bit clinical and to know how the game is actually going requires somewhat more human input - your comments made all the difference to me as I hate not knowing what is going on.

Roy Keane - would be good but too dear / too much potential for disharmony.

Worst moment as a fan has to be the failed European Finals - losing something to Rangers may be tough but for me it passes quickly - losing when so close in Europe twice will never leave my memory - Valgaerens (?) lunge to stop the 3rd Porto goal going in will last longer in my memory than either McStays missed pen or that Motherwell Gits Celebration after scoring a goal that was meaningless to them.

Very interesting take on developments of which I fully agree. However did you not suggest prior to the Dunfermline game that a failure to win would result in Strachan's departure? I didn't believe that would have happened. The football has been good this season. I am pleased with progress to date. However we do have a long way to go. But it is much much better than last season already!

    Well Well!

And here's me thinking FARGO was away down Argentina way!

Another colleague me thinks ,offering a morsel on Roy Keane.

As i said earlier i think its all a bit premature, but as were all having a go here's mine.

Roy Keane could this season be the guy who pushes us over the finishing line, and if he does nothing else i don't care about his past disciplinery record.
    I want the title!

I have thought for a while that we are short in midfield so give me RK instead off Alan Thomson in there and i will be quite happy.

    Paul and one and all,

I share your optimism, Paul, about where our manager is taking us. But we are far from being there and, while it is a million miles better than the dross we endured last season, it is still not very exciting (to me). Wee teams put us under pressure they shouldn't. Sure, we are creating plenty of chances but we are squandering plenty too. Oh, Zurawaski would get injured when we needed him most. The goals he will provide will give the confidence any good team needs.

As I have said already in the previous thread, no way should Roy Keane ever darken the doors of Paradise. He's trouble.

My worst night as a Celtic supporter was inflicted by Jock Stein: when Dunfermline beat us in the Cup Final in 1960. Mind you, their goalkeeper had a lot to do with it!!

Seanbhoy, progress is being made, but as Parkheadcomesalford has alluded we can expect a few more bumps along the way, our man needs to earn his stripes against ‘them’ – always a test.

Talking about 'low points', I think mine goes back to the 3rd match against Racing in that series of infamous matches.
Celtic were just held in such high estime in Britain at the time, then seeing all that stuff on the national UK news was too much.

That was a wicked season 'cos we got knocked out in the first round of the EC by Kiev. Up till then winners always got a bye from the first round.

Fir Park last season also pales compared to losing a EC final, when you KNOW that you are the best team in the competition.

Just as well there are highs as well!

Let's improve our goal difference tomorrow (pity Magic looks doubtful) and start breathing down their necks - it could be just 2 pts difference as they go into their match (an added bit of pressure maybe)!!!

On the subject of setanta and there comentary team I had the misfortune of flicking past the Forces of Darknesses tv channel last night and to my amazement saw none other than settanta finest Mark Hately sitting there talking about the Huns game with that horrible goalie they used to have.

He was sitting there refering to Rangers as us and wee as you would expect form an ex player who still suported his ex team on there tv channel to beHAVE

My point being though surely when you become a so called neutral comentator with setanta for all SPL games you should be distancing yourselves from the clubs you have played for SO YOU CAN REMAIN IMPARTIAL

Surely time is right to complain about this and get him off setanta SPL team for good.

Imagine of Craig Burley came on Celtic TV and refered to us as wee and us when he is supposed to be neutral.

LETS GET HIM AND HIS MASTER BROWN OFF NOW

Just want to add my no vote for Roy Keane. Remember the first time he announced he wanted to play for us he got us all excited only to announce a few months later that he had signed a new improved contract. I think he is just opening up new contract negotiations with MU.
We know how much we love the club. If he had the same feelings he would have come here two years ago.

Like most signings for Celtic, I have little or no opinion on them until they play for us (perhaps this has developed after the cries of who? when we got Larsson and Moravcik).

The only thing I would add about Keane, is that we shouldn't ignore him simply because he will be 35 eg Sheringham is still making a good contribution at a level significantly higher than we normally have to play at and he's 38, if we were needing a striker I'd take him right now.

Of course Keane would have to be prepared to drop to around 15k max or perhaps a pay per play deal.

Well done to Noel for last night's correct answer.

Jon G - have a good night out.

    Tonight's question is :

Name 4 players from Partick's victorious cup team of '71 who later went on to play for Celtic.

Out of interest I have never had a 'worst game' experience as a Celtic fan. However the worst I have felt was after the deaths of John Doyle, Jock Stein and Bobby Murdoch. It's at times like that, that you can put football in perspective and those 3 were sorely missed.

It was not a coin that caused mr.dallas to fall on one knee, holding a red coloured handkerchief to his brow, whilst staring feverishly at the press pack......

    It was a word.

-when mr.dallas produced le carte rouge(like that Kojo?) to Stephane Mahe-he of the terrible Gallic temper-he opened the gates of Verbal Hell !

Unleashed from the suffering Celtic support came a torrent of expletives, swear words and general foul language....

Whether he was hit by an B word,a C word or a general FLYING F*@#,it is hard to tell.....

Who uttered the fateful piece of verbosity ?

I am going to jump in here with both feet on the Keano for Celtic topic.

Am based in Dublin and was talking to an Irish football legend last friday over a pint, the gist of it was there are two sides to every story and Roy didnt walk out on Ireland.

Secondly I watched him play for the same country against France recently and he was superb, really a class act, I for one would be delighted if he joined.

I hear people when they talk of Lenny and how could we ask him to make way, but Keane is a player of real quality, I think he'd be fantastic in the hoops.

Celtic first, there is no room for sentiment.

    First ever post.

I have checked this site everday from the first day I found it back in the heady days of 2004, may have been late 2003 but I dont think so. An absolutely fantastic site created by one of the bhoys, for all of us, bhoys and ghirls alike. Paul your devotion to bhour religion is an example to us all, and all our little followers of the future. How you find the time to dedicate to this I'll never know, and how you keep this missus placated is an ever bigger mystery. Anyway, reason for the post, Gordon Strachan, WGS, what do we call him, is it gordy?, is it WGS? apart from when your typing it sucks.Anyway, went off a bit there. I like what he's doing. I dont want to get caught up in this quick attacking football philosophy right away though. Modern day football takes thought, intelligence, confidence, fitness and technique. Tv has watered down the suprise of tactics nowadays and it takes an intelligent coach to understand tactics of an opponent and how to counterattack against them to achieve victory and exctasy for their supporters. I fear that a quick route back to the free flowing football philosophy, without first getting a grip of the frailties of the defensive unit would be a major mistake. The full backs need to be changed immediately. Mo Camara is hardly SPL class let alone Champions League class. I am sorry, but Iam absolutley furious why this signing was allowed to happen. This player should not be playing for Celtic, full stop. I have never met him, dont know his history, but as a football fanatic, and i mean fanatic, this guy is not up to class in a big way. his speed and stamina make up for an obvious lack of talent and ability but i am offended by our clubs tactless cheapskating biscuit tinness on this one. who out of the young ones is a left back. I know i watched a reserve game on wednesday last week on celtic tv were one of your boys looked 200% better than camara, granted against young boys but.......surely worth a run out 2-0 or 3-0 up. Telfer, I'm sorry hardly long term, good ability, but not a lot more you can say. Lennon, finished. Keane, finished. Look to our youth. Have faith. Look at Beattie, Maloney, etc, they are coming through. the club are doing a great job. Attacking, speed, style, its time to be european champions again. Hail Hail,,the mighty Celtic of Glasgow.......

    Mon Ami quitesimplt....etc.

There is a big difference, between a Football Fanatic and a Celtic Fanatic.

Of which of the above choices is yours'

    I thought so.......

    Celtic Fanatic?

    I figured that!

    However,(" There he goes again,Nancy!"}

A Celtic Fanatic only sees in Shades of Green......

No Technicolor Vista, for he (or she)

    Ergo!

Being a true Celtic Fanatic of course, has its responsibilities and one of them is:

Never ever disparage a Present Team Celtic Player in PRINT!

You have no idea how hurtful and depressing it is to read your name disparaged and condemned in Glaring PRINT!

Take it From One Who KNOWS!!!!

    Bottom line..........

By all means, free free to criticise, in a CONSTRUCTIVE Manner...

There are many ,many Avenues that are open to Constructive Criticism
    Investigate...... and use them all!

But as I say........If you are a FAN, that is..........Now a Supporter, is a Horse of a Different Color!......

Never ever criticize in a demeaning manner any present Celtic Player.... in Print!

It just hurts your cause....as it can only initiate a "Pile On Guys" approach, to the extreme misery of the Player in the Critique.

Other's of lesser ilk are only too eager to besmirch the Celtic Cause!

    This feeds on itself.....and.....

    Bingo!

The Player's performance goes rapidly downhill!

    Not a Gooooood Praaaaaaaaaactice!

    Forrrrrrrrrrrgggggggetttttabbboutit!

Do not for a moment believe that I am chastizing you .

It is farthest from my mind.

I am only using your written opinion of a Present Celtic Player, as an example in my dissertation.

    Please do not be offended.

I know that you are a fine Celtic Man.... and love the Celts.

Been quiet for a while. Feeling a bit smug, and pleased, with the growing acceptance of WGS.

And apprehensive about the reaction with our next reversal.

    Hearts. We have to win.

November. A big month last year, a big disappointment. A big month this year, I expect 2 out of 2, I can live with the disappointment again.

I don't think I'll have to, but let no one underestimate Rangers' defensive performance against Inter. That's what we'll face.

Come December, whatever the results in November, we'll still be building, still work in progress. The big picture. Believe.

Roy Keane? Not at any price, but any day. We need Champions.

Do you think Gordon Strachan is here to be second best, in Europe or anywhere else? You haven't watched his career. He worked with Stein, he worked with Ferguson. He won with Aberdeen (big time) he won with Leeds, he won with Man. U.

I would be very surprised, and disappointed, if there wasn't, burning deep in the heart of Gordon Strachan, an ambition to win the Champions' League with Celtic.

After all, he was a key element of the last Scottish team to win a European competition, and his team beat Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to do it.

We can all live with failure, if the ambition is high enough. Seville.

Fasten the seat belt. Accept the plunges as part of the ride. The climb back up is always hard work. But on this rollercoaster, the next peak will always be a little higher.

And if anyone is thinking, you could say most of this about Alex McLeish, you're right. But only most. Gordon Strachan is our manager, in the right place, at the right time.

I wish Paul Lambert wasn't Livi manager for a day.

Quite simply the best….. welcome and thank you for your kind words – I appreciate them. I often wonder who has been lurking in the bushes all these months/

Your first point is quite true, we are always being an example to the Celtic fans of the future. I’ll avoid comment on your full-back point, as there are clearly problems there as well as some support needed. As Kojo alludes to, you would be surprised who looks in here, lets not send them away feeling even worse.

Your final point is the only reason we bother; time to be European Champions Again.

Very pleased to see the increasing positivity in so many posts.

Lived abroad so long and could only keep in touch via "normal" media, then what became available through internet - then came CQN!!!

Great exchange of views - wouldn't life be so boring if we all agreed - plus we would never learn anything new (and I learn a lot from this site)

Obviously opinions digress re. WGS, but I prefer to remain positive. The football I watch on Channel 67+ is definitely better than I saw last season, even if we are still not the complete article.

Have a question re. what has WGS acheived with previous clubs?
He has quite clearly explained what those clubs had for ambition at the beginning of each season and they did reasonably well based on those criteria.

I choose to believe that Celtic is the first club he has managed which matches his ideals and ambitions.

His credentials as a player cannot be doubted.
He seems very aware of modern thinking re. tactics, fitness, diet, application, etc, plus he has never shown himself to be afraid to stand and fight his corner in all the years he has been involved in football.

    What more do we want?

I never expect to see another Big Jock and probably wouldn't accept it if his like turned up again, but I do see similarities in their approach.
It's about about team performance, tactics, the manager decides and only those who fit in have a place.

Obviously too early for final judgements, but can anyone tell me where my reasoning is wrong?
Does anyone out there KNOW better?

Less than the treble would be a disappointment.
Less than the double I can't even imagine based on what I've seen so far.

Final word to all who class MC as "worst" ever Celtic player - you ain't seen many Celtic line-ups, have you?

    Regards to all

    Alex

    Paul,

We had an amazing moment of agreement. As I started reading your post I was thinking how remarkable it was that GS was still in place and there was a remarkable degree of good feeling around the club.

Its astonishing given the horrers of Fir Park and Atrmedia. The loss of European football felt like losing a limb.

Yet here we are. Now our lovely friends from the South Side are helping us out slightly but it brings me back to a consistent theme of mine - the Celtic supporters really are a remarkable breed.

And also full credit to GS - he has stuck in there despite those of us (including me) who felt he had blown it. There are some signs of hope - I will leave what I see as the weakness in our boardroom to another time.

Another poster (I think it was Adam) pointed out about how people grow in the role and about the importance of giving people a chance.

Time will tell - but GS has earned a chance.

As incidentally has messers Camara and Telfer.

    Vive le Celtic

    Hi Bhoys and Ghirls,
I've not posted for a while, but feel it's a good time to pass on my heartfelt optimism for the remainder of the season, and beyond. Apologies for the length of the post.

I like everyone else was shocked by the embarrassing exit from Europe. However it was probably for the best this season.

On to my optimism. WGS comments today are what I was hoping to hear. His style of play is far removed from MONs, but he has been left with several players who, because of their profile, salaries and stature within the club, have to be played when available whether they suit his style or not.

Believe it or not I’m not talking about BBJ. We all know his shortcomings, but he has linked up very well at times and there is a place for BBJ in the team although he should not be a guaranteed starter.

Firstly Alan Thompson. In The MON era of power play and carefully executed set plays, he was key, especially with his delivery of a ball. He can still pass a ball very well, but time is catching up with him. When played wide he can’t get forward enough and if he plays in one he is always likely to try too much and sell goals like the one at Ibrox last season. Has a very dodgy temperament as well. No need to preach on this one, as we all know it. I think he should be punted. We have so many guys who can play on the left and with Nakamura and Maloney around we do not have the dependency on his delivery.

Then to Chris Sutton, who I love to death as a fit Celtic forward. However, if he is not up front, I feel he shouldn’t be in the team. He is a player who demands the ball and because of his regard within the squad will always be given it. He was very effective in the midfield under MON, but he is not slick enough for the Strachan midfield. I would love it to be a rotation between big Chris and BBJ for the physical forward, but if the opposition defence suits then Beattie instead of them.

I am strangely optimistic about the centre of defence. Many who have judged Adam Virgo on his unconvincing appearances so far. I think back to one of my hero’s Paul Elliot. Took a good while to settle but when he did, what a player. Unlike Elliot it is a big step up for Virgs. He is also coming back from a serious injury. Each game will build his confidence and I look forward to the game where Adam actually believes he is a Celtic player or rather feels he deserves to be in the team. There will be no looking back.

I also believe that Du Wei will be a more than decent centre back. He may take longer to establish himself as Bobo is playing well (long may it continue) and Mick is still in the frame, but being a footballing centre back, he fits in to Strachans philosophy.

If Bobo doesn’t go in January he will go in the summer. Good luck to the big fella, I wish him all the best. With Virgs, Du Wei, Kennedy and Mick I think we are looking okay.

While Mo Camera has been a weakness and Artmedia was his lowest ebb, he also showed he has bottle at Ibrox and at the very least he fits in to the Strachan way of playing.

Compared to the other SPL squads we look strong and as WGS keeps moving towards the players who can play his game, it will only get better.

Hail Hail to anyone who kept awake til here.

    Bertie.

relating to your signing from the East (At 8:22 PM) it was mentiioned on the BBC commentary of the Hibs game last night that Gary Caldwell may be moving to Celtic in the Jan window - no idea if it is true or not but IMO it would be a good addition to the squad and more forward looking than other rumours in the nedia

Welcome to the many new posters over the last few days - it is good to get some new insights

I think one point that has not been highlighted sufficiently is the way WGS has been able to to evaluate and integrate players from the U21 teams into the first team squad so quickly and effectively - this must be difficult because previous managers including MON have not succeeded in this task - IMO this is essential for an upwardly mobile team and will lead to us going forward into Europe in the next couple of years with a core of talented Scottish players

    Kojo,

Its always healthy to consider your views and change them when they don't work. One of my life rules (despite what some of you may think)

    No-one is ever 100% right.

But (and there is always a but) - loads of people tell me to look forward. However as a scholar of history you must always look back to see where you are going.

My other rule in life is - if it doesnt make sense it doesnt make sense. Does that make sense?

GS and team have earned a chance - I will certainly give them that. Celtic remain far more imprortant to me than is healthy - but isn't that the same for all of us?

PS visiting places we have been before can be very healthy for the perspective. Its nice to see things again when you have changed.

Sevilleant, you are thinking along the same lines as me. We are watching a team develop in a manner we have not seen before. When MON done it in 2000 it hit us for six, but the changes underway at the moment are different, with a different gestation period.

    Paul,

I loved the tenuous link from work in progress >>>> gestation period.

Big Eck must be waiting for an elephant to pop out given the time he has taken with his work in progress over on the southside.

But, getting back to the point and our own little work in progress, that is much more precious and closer to our hearts…….

I quite like the idea of Celtic Football Club being pregnant at this time.

    Fragile!

    Handle with care!

That’s what is needed for a bouncing, (okay, bad adjective!) healthy baby.

Hopefully, after a much more normal gestation period than the other lot, we can all celebrate our bundle of joy next May when the baby is born with a couple of silver cup's in his mouth.

How quickly our new baby grows will depend on how well we treat him next summer.
He should have the best milk money can buy so he is ready for his first holiday into Europe.

This leaves just one question though.

Gibson was a substitute that day and replaced Glavin with 17 minutes to go. He was used to hold the ball up and waste time.

Chucky therefore knew exactly what was going to happen. Of course this DOES mean that BBC Scotland is now in cahoots (shock, horror, whoever would believe such a thing?) with those mindless bigots who sing anti-Celtic songs, who rant and rave and spout forth their sectarian bile, who . . . .

On the name Keane...anyone of that name who comes to Paradise will only be allowed through the gates on the basis of relationship with manager...IMO...and I know little of its status. I trust the judgement of the gaffer on this matter...He knows where he is going and who is going with him...

Last week I posted on the unfortunate tone of the BBC phone in. Nasty!..Fortunately I do not have access to the Brown/Hately show...As one of the original irksome twosome used to say..."Its a funny old game"..I believe it will be entertaining in the middle to long term as they find it more and more difficult too ignore or not appreciate the work of art they are paid to feast their eyes upon...

I see young Marshall is already suggesting he won't sit on the bench forever. I think he would do well to remember that just because he had been first pick it doesn't necessarily meant that he would have kept the jersey, even if he was as good as he clearly believes he is.

He should also consider that at the age of 20 he has much to learn in a position where players don't normally peak until their late 20's and Boric might just be the man to learn from.

Freekick comes to nothing as keeper comes out to collect the 'cross'

Delighted for McManus....Sutton played a part with customary run to back post...
Strong display from Sutton and Nakamura...Intelligence coming to the fore...
Maloney and Beattie showing great first touches and linking up well.
Magic a little quiet but working hard off the ball...Magic moments may yet come..

2-0 to Rangers now... might as well write that game off now then!

40mins: Commentators saying Celtic deserve their one goal lead at present... but Gordon Smith wants to talk about Livi more saying they will be reasonably happy as although Celtic have had most of the play, their only goal has had to come from a set piece... Dont you just love him?

Half time... 2-0 surely game over! Gordon Smith almost crying... pity that one wasn't from a set piece eh?

Celtic seemed to have dominated most of the play through the first half without threatening too often. Livi seem to be offering very little up front... pretty much what I expected I suppose??

  • At 01/10/05 15:52, Blogger stephen74 said…

Commentator saying Celtic 2nd goal followes some really nice 1 touch football before Beattie found Maloney in the box who turned and buried his chance low into the corner. First goal from the corner seems to have been a Glancing header from Sutton at the near post with McManus coming in strongly at the back post to finish... hope this clarifys the goals

    HT Livi 0-2 Celtic

Similar performance to last week so far, lots of good possession and plenty of chances. We're just not putting the ball away. I sense that very soon, some team is going to get a hiding fom us.
The team has a good shape to it with Petrov, Sutton, Maloney and Naks all working well in midfield. The defense are playing solid, no frills football, I suspect just what they are being told to do by WGS. Camara is not making those long ranging runs from left back and is concentrating in holding his position and letting the guys in front of him do their stuff further up the park. Good progess.

Boruc - Nothing to do again this week.
Telfer - Great performance again. Plays the simple ball at all times - even got a good shot in from 20 yds which the keeper parried away
Bobo and McManus - These two are really playing well together these days. McManus is always there to cover when necessary and Bobo doesn't miss much. McManus never tries to do anything spectacular - just straightforward defending. Just what we need
Camara - Solid. Tendency to punt the ball down the wing but more often than not is playing the ball inside
Naka - Outstanding. This guy has everything except strength. First touch and distribution is sublime.
Petrov - Getting forward a bit more this week and playing well. Almost scored
Maloney - Great running and distribution. Finished off a great flowing move with a cool finish
Sutton - Getting back to fitness and is the player that keeps the midfield and front-line connected. Having a good game but I would personally like to see him up
    front.
Beattie - Always finds space and gives the midfield an out ball. Links well with Maloney. Finishing not great this week but will surely get more chances second half
Magic - Hasn't featured much. I suspect he is still trying to find his best position in this side.

Overeall, an excellent performance and the second goal at the end was no more than we deserved. I'd like to see us press on and get a few more in the second half to build confidence.

Beautiful one touch football in the build up fot that second goal...Nakamura, Petrov and cool turn and finish by Maloney...

First half display very encouraging. Defense is solid. Sutton back with a stormer and bossin the middle and pushing forward well..Stan uncompromising and working a shift.
magic working hard but most of the attacks on the left with Beattie and Maloney linking up well...
Great one touch coming more and more to the fore in recent weeks..It continues today.

Strachan was screaming and scowling after the first goal...the work rate is very good from all...He is becoming the gaffer!

I'm not sure why but I had a bad feeling about today's game. Surely now at 2-0 I can't be tempting fate?!
Anyway, I'm glad we're in front and it sounds like we're playing some nice football. Also, it's great to see Beattie turning into a real contender for our front line - I'm glad to be proven wrong as I didn't think he was good enough to oust what we already had.

Radio commentator has just said "this is the best I've seen Nakamura play". Can't wait to see the game!

Gordon Smith hasn't seen his debut against Dundee Utd. But still, if it's anything like that game then fantastic!

Zurawski scores a great header from a "devastating Camara cross" after Celtic "turn on the style"... also, that other lot have lost a goal to Hunfermline.

Is it just me that's annoyied by the commentator saying "the japanese player"?

What do you make of that...Mo camara with a great anticpated run which Sutton picked out with perfect timing...Mo Camara then makes himself available and puts in a perfect cross for a Magic ending...Personally I think he is Super but maybe our collective psyche simply cannot contemplate considering that connection...

56mins: Good break by Celtic down the left with great flick from Maloney to Camara whio squared across goal but Beattie couldn't connect... apparently Zurawski unhappy as he had held back and was unmarked...

It's like: "the little - Japanese... player" every 2 minutes. Don't want to accuse anyone of being rasict but what has his nationality got to do with it? He doesn't say the Bulgarian midfielder every time he refers to Petrov... plus Naka isn't even that small! (Maybe skinny but not short)

Great finish by Sutton after the ball spun off the wall. No-one picked Sutton up as he wandered into the box just before the kick was taken - good awareness by the big man.

Maybe that hiding I was talking about at HT is happening before our eyes....

Commentators waxing lyrical about Celtic now and seem to be saying there is a real drubbing on the cards here now... (even Gordon Smith although his voice does sound a little shaky...

65Mins: Petrov takes a knock, but comes straight back onto field... This could be the only problem with giving a team a hiding is if they start kicking lumps out of our guys...

66 mins Corner to Livi... Boruc comes out and collects... everything going well for us at the moment...

67Mins: Beattie now fouled with the livi player lucky not to get a straight red apparently... they think he wasn't quite last man

  • At 01/10/05 16:28, Blogger nickhealy10 said…

    Here's hoping for the hiding!

I for one would love Camara to get on the score sheet. I'm not daft thinking he's the answer to left back position, but he has a great cross from him like Thommo managed so often. It'd be great for his confidence and would quieten some of his critics.

I for one support whoever is fortunate enought to pull on the Hoops!

    Hail Hail

This is the best game I've watched on the radio for a long time. ;-)
Sounds like confidence is flowing through the team. Pace, movement, one-touch play.
All this without Lennon, Thompson and Hartson. Coincidence?
OK, Livi sound murder but all that hard work on the training ground sounds like it's bearing fruit.
Greg Strong lucky not to be sent off for bodychecking Beattie.
    Paul Dalglish is subbed.
Livi sound as if they're leaving the boot in as Celtic run riot.
Rangers lead 3-1. Nieto. Good that they're giving that donkey a game.
If he'd the new Batistuta, I'm the new Dirk Diggler :-0
