"Nakamura wants to play in Spain next season" - I see it did'nt take the rags long to try to unsettle our new man! - Didn't he turn down two Spanish clubs last month to sign for us?
-
Sounds like Du Wei played quite wel yesterday, but I don't think we can criticise Balde and McManus too much in recent games. They were very poor at the goal on Wednesday but they've been doing okay. Ditto for Telfer and Camara. I think a lot of our defensive issues stem from a lack of cover in midfield. I like the idea of a rotational, fluid midfield, but when we don't have the ball, it's important that everyone knows where they're marking. It's going to be a tough decision for WGS with regards to Du Wei and Agathe. As long as Telfer is doing okay, it'd be a bit harsh to drop him for Agathe, and I think Maloney deserves a chance ahead of him for the midfield slot. I also think it'd be harsh on McManus for us to drop him for Du Wei at present. I suppose that's what WGS is paid big money for! I reckon there will be very little change for tomorrow's game. Probably Thommo back for Shaun, Sutton in for Lennon and BBJ for Beattie.
-
"Nakamura wants to play in spain next season"
That's fine but he has a contract so if he plays well this season and then feels like he would like to cut his teeth in a higher league, celtic will recieve a handsome transfer fee in return. The previous reply makes a good point; Shunsuke knocked back two mid-table spanish sides to join Celtic and has already won over the support so I doubt he has any notions of leaving the club just yet.
-
Glad to hear our mamager does not try to conceal his contempt for the media. Indeed, while leafing through the Scotsman's sports section I noted no Celtic related stories, which is fair enough: if there's nothing to write about, there's nothing to write about.
Clearly this does not matter to some "newspapers": if there's nothing to write about, we'll just make it up!!
This brings me to my point: if our manager and the majority of fans loath the sports press, why, oh why, has the OFFICIAL site taken to doing "a round-up of Celtic related news and rumours" sourced from the very publications we all detest???????
-
Interesting to see the rumours on the official site. Maybe they have just been put there to highlight how flawed a lot of their views are.
-
I can see where Strachan wants to go with his team, i can see the way he wants the team to play, however, full backs are more important in his system than they are in others, they are in fact one of the key positions, due to the specified unit they are asked to play alongide their defensive partners, but also the job of over lapping, making themselves available when attacking and defending, getting inside the box on occasion, crossing etc.
However, he wont get their with the limited full backs we have at the moment.
They are good honest professionals who give their all, its just not good enough for Celtic FC, maybe they would have been for Southampton or Coventry, im not criticising Strachan, i am excited about they way he wants us to play. Agathe has the potential to be a very key player, if they can get him to play the defensive unit part, his attacking abilities could be pivotal.
I cant help but feel, and i think il always be bitter about the McNamara fiasco, that had we done right by him, we wouldnt have needed to waste (i do believe this will be the case) £1.5m on Vigo, and spend £300k on Telfer, freeing up £1.8m to spend on a left back (even then we should have got Olivier Bernard, who uses the ball better than Camara).
Anyway, as i said im not trying to be one of these annoying critics, and im certainly not a blow in (who only know criticism), but i can see his vision, but as they are saying with this 4-5-1 phenomenon in the EPL, it only works if you have the players.
-
Good point GM - not sure why they're doing that. It was however interesting to see the Daily Mail claiming that JK woul dbe back playing by November. From what I'd heard, that sounds a bit ambitious, but hope I'm wrong!
-
Teamtalk says Thommo is definitely out of tomorrow's game. You'd never guess I was bored and none too chuffed about having to work on a Glasgow holiday! Which football site to go to next?!
-
The back page of the Evening Times says that Thompson is fit.
That would be spotted whilst at the pub on a Glasgow holiday!
-
Danny - I can see where your coming from and agree with the summation of the fullbacks - they aren't good enough . However dont be bitter with Celtic regarding the McNamara affair . This was all down to McNamara , no-one else . From a couple of pro's who use the same gym as me , the Mcnamara deal was done long before the one day when he gave the ultimatum to Celtic . He already knew he was going before his testimonial . These transfers take weeks to set up and I'm quite sure he got a handsome signing on fee from Wolves . The disappointing part is that he has tried to blame Celtic in all of this .
-
Danny
I really cant take any more of this Mcnamara nonsense.
He left for more money then tried to blame it on Celtic during an interview with the record of all papers.
He was a an overrated player and probably no better than Telfer
-
RAB1888 I agree that the McNamara stuff is nonsense and I am dissapointed in him since he left (especially who he left for).
However, he was club captain and deserved better especially in light of Bobo and Lennon's deals.
Finally, he was never, ever overrated. The best Scottish (and Celtic)defender of his generation by far.
I like Telfer but McNamara he is not - see the Old Firm game for evidence of that.
-
Did anyone read the above article? “Apart from Alan Thompson, who is carrying an ankle injury, Gordon Strachan reported a clean bill of health from the rest of the squad”.
-
Read it, but it doesnt say whether he is fit to play tomorrow or not...
-
I must say im perplexed at the right back situation. Forgive me if im wrong but was not Didier Agathe our first choice for the position untill his injuries. Did not Didier represent the club at the highest level in both domestic and european football. Telfer has done ok in my view since he came to the club butimo was never or should never have been brought to replace agathe. Telfer will be a good solid squad player. Agathe on the other hand terrifys defences with his pace down the right hand side. Hence the need for most teams to double up on him when he s in full flow. Players doing ok is not good enough we need our big guns in when they return from injuries such as didie. I would like to see didier bombing down the right hand side and camara doing the same down the left.
-
Celtic cross it wasnt my intention to get into a debate over the Jackie issue, however i have to totally disagree with what you have said. Firstly, i have to disagree with transfers taking weeks to complete, sometimes they are, when the player and club dont agree on the length and the breakdown of the wage, however ask MO'N if transfers take weeks, because he left all his to last 1-2 days.
Liverpool apologised to their fans over the Steven Gerrard matter, when they allowed their club captain to go within 2 years of the end of his contract. 1 year ago, Celtic gave Jackie 2 years contract on less money, because they said they were giving him a testimonial, Jackie wanted 2 years, and pay increase, let alone a decrease. They then said he would get a 2 year deal the next time round, and be put back to his original wage atleast. Because it was Celtic, in hindsight he stupidly said yes.
This weakened his hand when it came to the next round of contract talks, because he had shown his love for the club could allow them to take advantage more than they could when they were throwing more than double his weekly wage at foreigners like Bobo Balde and the infamous clause.
In the day and age of Bosmans, they then allow their club captain to go within 6 months of the end of his contract for a 2nd time in 2 years. Martin O'Neill takes blame here as well, Jackie should have had a contract a long time before Strachan came in.
When Celtic eventually get round to offering their club captain his new contract, it is for 1 year, and on the same reduced terms.
How wanted, how valued would you have felt?
The board wouldnt have dared do this to a foreigner, because they know they'l be told where to go.
The 1st time Jackie was offered the 2 year contract he wanted, was when he was on his way down to Wolves, Darren Jackson, gave Celtic giving prior warning, they never took it seriously, they continued to abuse his loyalty.
Then, which compounds the whole joke of an issue, Celtic spend £300k on a 33 year old, and give him the 3 year contract Jackie had been asking for for 2 years!!
No other club in Europe would treat their club captain like the that.
(Sorry Paul and other readers, had to get that off my chest)
-
1 more point i forgot, what other club in the world, could actually turn around and say with a straight face, that they believed contract talks were going well when a players contract has already run out?
Initially i was angry with Jackie, but after seeing his press conference when he was blatantly totally shell shocked and devestated, i changed my mind and started reading into everything.
-
I still think that 'we' have a right to be dissapointed in Jackie - slating the club hurts us after all.
Equally, one of his statements alluded to needing financial security for his family.
I can also except anybody leaving our club to better himself but Wolves? For the stated desire of playing in the Premiership? He should have held off, he'd be playing for a decent team in the Premiership by now. Very, very badly advised.
-
Mr Mcnamara was worth no more than was offered to him and proved why he was a poor choice for captain by slagging off our club on more than one occasion in the tabloids.
If he was really as good as some misty eyed celtic fans remember him then he would have been signed by a premiership club at least.
Overrated.bottom line
-
So larsson was rubbish because he wasn't signed by a premiership club?
-
The point regarding mcnamara and selling his story to the daily ranger!
Can you imagine how his former teammates (who were called thugs and thieves on front page) felt when their captain slates the club in that rag!
-
Danny you're entitled to your opinion . I just 100% disagree with it . Quotes like 'I gave Glen Hoddle my word' dont do it for me , a week after taking the dough from 60000 fans . I'm glad I wasn't one of them , then I would have been really p!ssed off ! !
-
Giovanni Paolo
I really cant see how you got that from my comment
AT LEAST a premiership club
im not suggesting that the premiership is the only big league in the word.
what i was trying to say was that if he was as good as some people thought he was he would be playing in the top league in the country he has chosen to go to not for Wolves in division 1
-
Have we turned the clock back here, talking about Jackie Mc again ?
Come on, gie's a break!
-
that's the same as my point - jackie was that good, he was just badly advised and acted badly.
i just meant that the fact he was with us doesnt detract from how good he was - which i thought was your point.
-
I just watched the press conference on the official site. The reporter who brought up the Nakamura rumour, seen in another paper btw, was really put in his place. Way to go wee man. Next time though let us know his name and the paper he works for, so we can all laugh at him.
-
Shammy - you're right , he's not worth the time typing in this comment , let alone the contract he was after . Last word from me .
-
No Bread No Cakes, another fascinating comment. What did you have for breakfast today?
-
My point was really that if he was that good Wolves wouldnt have been the only offer he had.
Maybe i didnt make that clear.
Completely agree with Celtic Cross and Shammy.
Thats me finnished discussing someone who isnt worth it.
-
The Naka story is another cloud by the hun press to hide the fact that TFOD have sacked their major players at the top.
They done the Lennon story for as long as they could, they now have a comment from naka that they will run.
What happened to the build up of the biggest game this year!
Or the fact that TFOD 15 million training complex, headed by the best guy for the job in Europe, has failed and he has been moved on.
Can anyone shed light on the movements of the rangers board?
Why did they choose this week to announce it all? (Lennon?)
If anyone needed more evidence of the Hun press being pro them and against us, then this is it.
P.S. I would like to say Hail Hail to PL and the PR guys. A get together to welcome the new signing from China, headed by a who's who in the chinese community of Glasgow!! Well done to everyone.
That should boost the link between the east and Celtic.
-
rab1888, I'm sure you must be at the wind up to say Jackie Mac was overated.
Someone like Barry Ferguson you could describe as overated; but not Jackie.
-
ok back to the point of a pretty close to fully fit squad, is Strachan going to show the same kind of loyalty to his men, as O'Neill did to his, Telfer is Strachans equivelent to Lennon and Marty, he has taken him with him everywhere he has been?
I hope not.
-
I regard Telfer as a solid, reliable player but we have to aspire to better than that that.
Didier Agathe is a better player! full stop.
The quicker he replaces Telfer the better for the team.
-
Agree pretty much with Danny on full backs. I do not believe they're good enough to last the long term. In particular, Telfer will never reach the heights already achieved by Agathe.
That said, I can understand where GS is coming from - if he's worked with the defence, and they're following instructions, playing well, thaten it would be bad management to drop one just because Agathe is fit again.
What will most likely happen is that Agathe will come on as a sub sometime, play well and then be left in as first choice.
The Camara thing still astounds me. GS bought Telfer as right back cover, with Agathe, Virgo and possible Irvine ahead of him. But Camara was his no.1 choice as left back, with no real competition - possible only from McManus.
The guy is a 100% tryer with a great engine, and great attitude. But he shouldn't be anywhere near the Celtic 1st eleven.
Jackie.
What an absolute disaster this sorry episode was.
The club are hugely more to blame than Jackie. No offer till June 3rd to the club captain who is out of contract. And when it comes it's a poor offer, only raised to an acceptable level when he's half way to Wolves.
But Jackie should have said sorry to Glen Hoddle when that ridiculously late offer did come in, and sign for the Celts.
I would split the blame 90%/10%.
I had a long chat with Jackie Snr on the eve of the Cup Final. Jackie's contract was hardly discussed (we were back in the 70's, talking Jock Stein and Pat Stanton!) other than him saying "Jackie won't be going anywhere unless the club are totally unreasonable".
-
On the point of Jackie not going to a premiership club (last time i promise) surely the fact that he ended up going to Wolves, just after 53 000 people had attended his testimonial (i was 1 of them), and the fact that Jackie never moaned or whinged once in his time at the club, including the lengthy spells he wasnt in martins 1st team, he can never be classified as a mercenary, he went to Wolves on the same money, goes to show you the extent of how the club must have treated him!!
-
good point regarding Camara tully57.
Wgs has had his fingers burned with that one. Unfortunately we dont have another left back(may i suggest thommo) and need to persevere with the one with the armband(whats that all about!!)
-
I'm glad that someone has finally raised the point of Camara's arm support!!!!!
I think we were 100% to blame for the McNamara mess but would somebody please explain why he signed for the first club he spoke to and Wolves for goodness sake!!!! To play premiership football...I just don't get it.
-
Jackie Mac (God Bless him) is no longer here. lets move on !
-
well said
-
Jackie would rather captain Celtic then a second rate English outfit but the fact is the board shafted him. Hes on the same wages now as he was at Celtic Park. He came out in the press after the board tryed to tarnish his name to save thier own backs. Bobo pays more to the tax man than the board offered Jackie. He had premiership offers from West Ham, Wigan and i would think others. Is Nakamura a bad player cos he chose to play in the SPL instead of La Liga. The fact is Jackie was the only defender in the Celtic squad to come out of last season with any sort of credability and we let him go on a bosman. The board cant run a club or they would have learnt from Liam Miller and Agathe would be signed up by now. Bobby Carlos has never won player of the year and we had a full back who had won it twice in his career. Once at left back when hes a right back. The board cost the club 15 mil by letting jackie go. we wouldnt have conceded against Bratislava if Jackie had been there to tell Bobo and co. how to do their jobs.
-
Mr Mcnamara didnt whinge during his long spell of not being considered good enough for the first team beacause he probably knew he wasnt going to be paid the same money elsewhere for doing nothing.
He done more than enough whinging to the tabloids once he had signed for Wolves.
At first it was 'it wasnt about the money' and then it was 'i wasnt offerd as much money by celtic'.Make up your mind.
If a foreign player had behaved the way he did he wopuld have been called a mercenary
And yes he was overrated
-
McNamara came out of last season with credibility? You've got to be joking, he was made captain purely because he was a Scottish first team regular, constantly shirked his responsibilty look at the last day of the season, Petrov was the only one playing with any sort of heart, McNamara was a disgrace that day and was a vastly overated player. His testimonial was daylight robbery.
-
Some posters definitely on the sauce this afternoon. Balde pays more in tax than JM's wages ? Facts and figures to back this up ?
And Carlos never won Player of The Year with the Galacticos. Agreed. But he did have some stiff competition from the midfield and attack, though.
2 of these Madrid players, Zidane and Ronaldo, won player of the match in successive World Cup finals. (98, 2002).
JM was well paid by Celtic during his time here. If he wasn't happy at any point, he had the choice to leave. After many years, he made that decision. Good luck to him. But spare me all the revisionist stuff and get behind the current team and board.
-
-
Orrs67
'the board cost us 15 million by letting jackie go'
i almost soiled myself laughing after reading that comment
cheers for that
-
Agree Antibesbhoy, lovely part of the world b.t.w.
Orrs67, the board provide the manager with a budget, it is up to the manager to decide how to spend it. It is all too easy to blame the suits, but you are missing the target here.
I have well moved on from the player concerned, though I agree we have not improved on his position.
On what budget should be given for any player; the market rate determines all our wages.
If you are correct that Celtic offered the same (or similar) wages to what the player is on, then that is ‘market rate’. Celtic offered the correct money and the player exercised his right to move.
Balde is another proposition altogether. Balde signed for less money than was available to him elsewhere. His wages are high because that is what the market determines he is worth.
At the EGM Peter Lawwell was tackled on the issue of not signing players up and said “When you hear ‘I want to sign a contract with Celtic’, you do not hear ‘Only if the money is right’ which is always the case”.
Love them or hate them, not one of them would be there if he was offered the wages you or I am on (apart from maybe the young guys).
-
Just a quick one before I leave the office to the guys on here with an axe to grind with Bobo Balde.
Ever since Bobo was dropped for the Motherwell game I think he’s hardly put a foot wrong. Not sure if we would have lost the 4 goals that day either. Before anyone says it I know he played in Bratislava.
One thing I would also say about Bobo is he is NEVER injured (touch wood), and gives 100% in each and every game.
I’d much rather be paying Bobo whatever he gets paid compared to Woodgate at Madrid whatever he’s getting paid.
Fair enough I'm not comparing apples with apples but I watched that game last night and the guy had a mair!
First Scorer on Saturday – Bobo Balde 16/1. Hail Hail
-
AntiBesBhoy - "But spare me all the revisionist stuff and get behind the current team and board."
Well said. People keep using MON as a comparison to Strachan, problem is different team, different teams playing against. Using MON as a comparison is IMO like using Maley for Big Jock, or...apples for Pears (hey! both fruit but taste and look different).
Live in the now, say goodbye to the past.
There is no stability in football. Manager changes, players get old and move on. Such is the circle of life...er..football.
For me once a player leaves the club he's history. Only the club remains. Long may the club go on and prosper.
-
At the Caley game this weekend there will be more than 55,000 fans. It will be interesting to see the EPL attendances. Too much TV is being blamed for the slump in the south. In Scotland there has always been a degree of caaaution ( as Para Handy would say ) when live football was involved. Some days ago there were some reminiscences posted here about a league decider at Celtic Park in 1980 (Ten men won the league, 4-2). That game was not televised, a bummer for me at the time, but for those that managed to be there, it will be forever magic.
It´s now a case of demand and supply economics. When there is a glut, the product goes off.
The first thing the EPL should do is get SKY to scrap the Monday night game. There is no mystique about Monday night football, it is completely unnatural.
-
Danny,
Just read your comments, I can see where your coming from but IF MON wanted Jackie he would have offered him a contract LONG before the situation we found ourselves.
I was there for his testimonial and his comments after he left Celtic sholudn't have been said.
Regading Balde's contract well I've voiced my disaproval at the WHOLE situation but you can't blame Balde.
If it was anyone of us playing for the Hoops well... after banking a Million i would still be there!
Naka want's to leave? Stan next week... Before long it will be Agate and Sutton???
-
Alan Brasil on TalkRadio this morning-
"Tomorrow we have Hearts v rangers.
Hearts are managed by George Burley who supports rangers......oh!did I let that slip?"
Shockeroooooney-not.
noel.
-
With NL out for the next couple of games, we have a whacking great hole in the centre of midfield for a ball winner. This was blatantly obvious against Falkirk where we made Latapy look like Pele.Simple solution.Telfer for CM.Agathe at Right Back, surely?
-
Right then lads.
Been missing this week, bereavement in extended family.Need some cheering up!
Heard Alan Brazil this morning NOEL "did i let it slip" he's a belter in my book.Good show and anchored by a Celtic supporter too.MY,MY!
-
I don't believe WGS will deviate much from having Sutton in there Workshy.
It would be a shock were he too play young Lawson there, although there will come a time when the young lad will have to stand up and be counted, however i don't think that his time is here just yet!
-
For tomorrow:
Give Telfer a deserved rest. Start Lawson. Straight choice btwn Hartson and Sutton to partner Magic.
I would start with:
Boruc
Agathe, Bobo, McManus, Camera
Maloney, Petrov, Lawson, Naka
Zurawski, Hartson/Sutton
Three points should be in the bag, if we do it in style all the better
As for the other match, I hope hearts win convincingly.
The more points we can put between us and the TFOD the better, and their confidence will take another battering.
Hearts will implode later (we already started to see some cracks V PL's XI).
-
Can't see your midfield selected by WGS,not enough dig.
No Sutton in instead off Lawson, and according to Johnbhoy's blog Agate is still well short off being up to tempo as yet so,Telfer at RB.

Hi NOEL:
The cheering up has just kicked in.
Is BIb JOE,fit enough to work after all that rioja?
You have a point re Sutton. Not really a holding midfielder is he.
WGS may play the young lad Lawson but ICT will be well organised and he may opt to go with experience.
-
Paul,
I think that with no Thompson or Lennon tomorrow, we must start with Lawson. He seems to be the only one who is a ball winner a la Lennon. We can't afford to let Caley do a Latapy on us. I would always fancy Agathe over anybody for RB but he seems to have problems of some kind. So, it looks like we will have to stick to Telfer. How is the boy who was injured on his debut (Gardyne?)?
By the way, as someone who felt we did well by Jackie when he never was the same player after his knee injury, I have no time whatever for him now. Wolves and the R****d. What was he thinking of? Money, of course.

Re Jock Stein
The Oxford National Dictionary of Biography is free this weekend and it has an interesting biography of Jock with family background and wealth at death being a couple of not widely known facts.

I have had a quick look at this weeks posts Noel. Some really good points argued during my sabatical, although Cavansam and P8ddy had a humdinger yesterday.I'd hate to get into a verbal disagreement with those guys!
Seriously though an honorable draw i thought!
Tomorrow.Hearts and Rangers too draw.Celtic by 2-0.
My reckoning five points clear off Rangers, with them to visit us next time.Hearts then within three points with them also to visit us next. It's all then in our hands!
-
Parkheadcumsalford-
The bhoy that was injured-Gary Irvine-I think it was his second game-the friendly against Leicester-had a broken foot.
Although I haven,t heard anything official-I still can,t see him being fit before xmas.

I believe that come the end of the season we will look back and see tomorrow's games as the key turning point in our season. We start after what I hope is a draw in Edinburgh which would do no good for either Hearts or Rangers. However, no matter the result it is a win win situation for Celtic, providing we convincingly beat a troublesome Caley team. Given this scenario we should be approaching the subsequent games with loads of confidence and Hearts firmly in our sights.
Hail hail.

Historyreader-

Paul,
Naturally, what matters in football is the here and now and the speculation and anticipation about what is about to happen in the immediate future.
Nevertheless, any Celtic related topic is up for debate in my book, and Jackiegate is clearly still fresh in some peoples minds.
Why is he suddenly "the player under discussion"? Has he not got a name now that he is no longer on the playing staff? The guy had a long Celtic career and impacted all of our lives in a small way.
I can imagine that "McNamara" has become a swear word in the panelled offices at Celtic Park and I wonder if your natural instincts are not becoming increasingly reflective of the views held by the occupants of those very offices, given your closer association with them?
The poster that said we wouldn't have lost 5-0 in Bratislava had Jackie been playing that evening may well be right - we shall never know. But that was potentially an expensive evening (there is no guarantee that we would have negotiated the next round) and it does seem to me that the McNamara sympathisers are suggesting that he certainly wasn't offered "market value" from the outset and that this was a game of financial chicken that the board (and yes it is the board through their representative Peter Lawell) lost big time.
Jackie was a good player (not great) who was at the top of his game over the last two seasons. As captain, and the clubs longest serving senior first team player he should have been handed an acceptable 2 year contract long before the summer and he would still be an asset to the team today - and value for money at that.
As someone else pointed out, the two year deal was then offered to both Telfer and Camara who are decent players but inferior ones. These guys are beneath the standard of player to which we all aspire.
Mistakes were most probably made in the handling of Jackie McNamara, hopefully these have been recognised by those concerned (if not publicly) and the lessons have now been learned.
-
Thanks history reader, registered and had a wee look.
Most of the info was known previously but,one phrase has made my day.
"Above all the celtic teams of the Stein years lorded it over arch rivals Rangers"
Cheers
JonG

Cavansam & p8ddy - great debate on the last thread, could you do people like myself who get infrequent chances to log on a small favour, please put a time on the post you a refering to, it would save a lot of scrolling around to try and pick up on the discussion.
All - please, no Sutton in midfield, alternate him and BBJ, but not in Lenny's position.
Telfer maybe and Agathe back where he belongs might work, OK so someones about to comment that Telfers slow, but its Neil Lennon we replacing not exactly a speed merchant, Telfer can at least play a bit, and has the maturity to handle it.

mcnamara was "talking to" wolves, at least via jackson, before the end of last season. hoddle was up watching him.
he went into a huff cos he wasnt being sorted and because some of the english/foreigners had.
lennon waited and stayed.
he thought he was worth more money.
jackie was under mon a squad-player came good.
he was uninspiring as a captain. he had been there the longest and he was scottish.
the second most un-inspiring captain since tom boyd.
has was consistently averagely good. not bad qualities but not top dollar.
remember the press voted for ferguson over larsson as player of the year.
imo jackie's best year was with simon donnelly. good attacking duo.
if hes so good and playing in the championship, why are telfer and camarra rated worse, and why do we look down on the championship.
jackie played in the games at the end of the season when celtic consisted of petrov plus 10 feckinchancers.
bobo, tho on more than jackie, apparently could have got even more. bobo, the foreigner, stayed.
in saying that, jackie should be thanked and wished all the best.
-
JonG-Historyreader-
Just registered-as well
and the same phrase caught my eye-
"frequently lorded it over rangers"
I like that sentence.
I was quite surprised by how much Jock had tucked away-no small sum when you consider the average earnings in those days......
noel.

He was right though NOEL to leave rather than take up the insulting role offered.
Here we go my rant for the night.
The Celtic board at that time should have been ashamed off themselves. Not to see what the Big man had to offer as Mentor Council, and adviser to Big Billy amazes me and i will never ever forgive them for the way they saw our leader out the door!!!
I enjoyed that!
He deserved all he earned and more NOEL.He was simply the best i shall ever see!
Sorry for that phase but we had it first.

PHRASE! SORRY

Paul: On todays thread.
I believe WGS when he says he has a vision of how he wants his team to play.It says to me we have a manager who will continually strive to achieve qaulity, and will continually be looking at other better alternatives .
I only hope the board back his vision.

Noel90,
saw an interview with young Irvine on Celtic TV.He is coming on fine and is back training. Will be back before Christmas all being well.

Paul - good post. I understand where you are coming from with regards Gordons tactical mind and i am with him 100%. The future is interesting.
With regards Nakamura, if he wants to play in Spain next year, then it will be beach football. This is Mr Lawell's Nike money down the drain. This is what happens when the money men buy our footballers. No surprise there anyway. I can't make my mind up as to whether the wee man thinks he is Andy Thom or Regi Blinker. Still, I will give him more time, but from what we have seen he does not look like the best way to spend the maximum amount of money from a small transfer budget.
I understand where you were coming from on a previous post about left wing, right wing - and I agree. However, he does not look like a Celtic player?
I hope Chris gets a game at Centre Half tomorrow, although I must admit, McManus has been magnificent for us this season - so far. It's truly great to see.
Hail!

What a load of bull.
I've seen Naka make more telling passes in one game than any other of our midfield make combined in several games.... and most certainly more than your beloved team make in a season.
-
Welcome back JonG, hope your week went as well as could. Agree, Strachan knows where he wants to go.
Thedaveybhoy, “the player under discussion” is a writing style. It took me many months before I used the word ‘Larsson’ here, whom I hold in the highest regard.
Historyreader, I am not a member of the Celtic Trust, so cannot attend their AGM. Have been in touch recently, though.

i am currently worried about our right back position! firstly we have didi agathe, who is out of contract at the end of the season, being kept out of the squad by a 34 year old paul telfer, dont get me wrong i am all for players keeping their place for good performances, like telfer has given us,but surely gordon strachen must think long term in the way that didi will give us at least four more years service as a high quality right back, whereas as telfer is approaching the end of his career with his best days behind him therefor we must get agathe playing and signed up on a new deal before we lose a quality player for nothing.
-
Gaz,
Managing a team is a delicate balancing act, but if players turn up and do everything asked of them, is it fair to drop them? If players are playing to instructions, why take a chance on someone who is unused to the new tactics? That may well be Mr Strachan's observations on the Telfer v Agathe debate.
In any case, judging on Agathe's performance in yesterday's reserve match (which I attended) he is a bit short yet of the level of fitness and sharpness required.
Intriguingly, reserve team coach Kenny McDowall played Didier at right midfield and on the left of a front two - but not at right back. Has the decision already been made that he's on his bike in January?

Paul, as you said, there is a clean bill of health. Therefore, without Lennon playing, would it not make more sense for Telfer to move into midfield(is that not his prefered position), and put Agathe(or even Virgo) in at right back. I think a pacy, overlapping full back is what WGS is looking for and Agathe can certainly do that job.
The way WGS is talking also leads me to beleive that there are many changes still to come and he and the board are looking at this as a long-term venture. WGS will be around for a while. I also expect a fair bit of movement around January, with some going out and a few new arrivals.
I'm sure WGS will be looking for the good play at the start of the Hibs game to be continued throughout the ICT game.
Finally last time I posted someone asked about the Asian impact in Thailand... well I have spotted a fair few Japanese tourists sporting a number 25 shirt. However, the locals are hung up on EPL teams. BUT, we are better known than the other mob, mainly due to the Uefa run and Larsson.
-
BKKbhoy
Agree - we will never be big in Asia until we are in the EPL - then we will be very big, as a truly attractive newcomer - compared with Rangers who will try to out-Millwall Millwall.
Can't agree with the guys who hope for a draw in the sashfest today. There is one team we absolutely must finish above this year. As much clear water between ourselves and the the Big H**s is what's required.

I'll try and remember to link back to whoever I'm replying too by name and time. Thanks for the tip.

I wasn't sure about the Italics made my eyes go a bit funny, but I'll admit it is a bit easier on the blog as a whole as they don't stand out so much.
JonG 8.21PM, Noel90 8.29PM
Thanks for the feedback, P8ddy is definitely one of the reasons that I come on here even if he can drive me up the walls sometimes, but he does try and keep people on the straight and narrow and has the upmost respect for other posters which is good to see.
I'd better go get some work done as I seemed to do nothing yesterday but reply to P8ddy :o)
-
BangkokBhoy, I tend to agree that January might be busy with players going both ways.
HanoiBhoy, I agree, I have no divided loyalties at all for the Edinburgh game today. A three horse race might become a two horse race.
-
as long as we win i don't care what happens at gorgie but if i'm pushed i'll take a convincing win for hertz.
we all know the real threat comes from tfod so to put more daylight between us and them while keeping on hertz toes is the right result!!
expecting a tough game for us today so a narrow win could be the bet!
i don't know about you's but every game feels like win or bust the now!!
it fair adds to the excitement of it all eh?
as long as we win today everything else is a bonus!!

Morning, Paul,Hanoi Bhoy-
Got to agree-no split today-
Hearts to win 3-0.
We can take care of them when
the time comes !

Not to bothered about the outcome of the game in Edinburgh today as long as its a hard fought contest that taxes both teams.
Nearly fell off my seat when I heard Andy Davies was running the line.
If Celtic play to their capabilities today then I cannot see anything other than a win, famous last words.
-
Al Obundy-
Is that true about andy davies on the line today at tynecastle ?
Is that not a bit of a sick joke from the SPL ?
noel.
-
Noel90
According to the SFA website Kenny Clark is in charge at Tynecastle today but there are no details as to who is running the lines.
I may be wrong (and it would be far from the first time!) but I thought Andy Davies was given the Cup Final last season as he was retiring. I certainly haven't seen his name mentioned anywhere this season so far.
-
noel- It certainly is could not believe it myself when I heard. It will be interesting to see the reaction from both set of fans to him. They will no doubt be lineing up Dougal for the next game against tfod.
-
Wonder if they will have some synchronised singing today at swincastle?"after you lads" "no no after you". ALL TOGETHER NOW!
-
Hearts 1
rangers 0
-
TEE HEE 1 -0 to the huns withoot the bus fare
-
Have rangers not had their penalty yet?
-
Hearts scored off their very first corner, and Porto scored two goals from corners.
God if only Bobo had stuck that one in at Ibrox!!
Not hard to see one of Rangers major problems :o)
