Financial realities will push Celtic look to a generation of Glasgow domination

What has become the established Celtic back five of Boruc, Telfer, Camara, McManus and Balde have now played thirteen games together and have lost only seven goals – a remarkable contrast to the nine goals shipped during the first two games of the season.

After twenty years of indifferent failure to produce a quality addition to the first team, I had lost faith in our youth system. Stephen McManus has done nothing particularly spectacular this season, however, during these last thirteen games he has hardly put a foot wrong.

He is composed, and is now playing with a confidence you only get after a run in the team. When Gordon Strachan considered his central defensive options during the summer I am sure he put the prospective signings of Virgo and Du Wei ahead of McManus, not to mention Balde, Varga and the recovering John Kennedy.

The player got a break and has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

Last night Celtic were excellent. Nakamura was perpetual motion; head up and one touch passing before moving into space. The first two goals reflected this; quick, pass and move football – just what we have been looking for all season.

After being the subject of considerable debate on Celtic Quick News this week, you could not have scripted the Stillian Petrov hat trick better. The one area of the team that did not completely click was the front line of Sutton and Beattie; neither of whom got a clear chance all night.

When your strikers are not getting goals, a match-winning midfield player is beyond price.

In some of my less prosaic articles from last season, I suggested that Celtic were on the cusp of a generational dominance over Rangers.

Seven years ago, after Celtic won the league, David Murray allowed Dick Advocat to run up a deficit of £35million in order to redress the Celtic advantage.

This splurge and the others that followed won Rangers several domestic trophies and cast Celtic in the role of ‘prudent’ losers. It was like playing poker with a crazy man. How can you win?

As revealed on Celtic Quick News earlier this week, some bloodletting will happen next month, when Alex McLeish will pay the price of losing his dressing room, a fact that was clearly demonstrated by the result against Livingston.

I have enormous sympathy with McLeish. For a start, he has won far more than he had any reasonable right to. More importantly, he was recruited to manage the decline of Rangers – a fan of the club who would sweat blood trying to escape the probability of failure.

Next week Murray International Holdings will report a most spectacular level of debt.

David Murray now has no choice but to run Rangers on a shoestring. His recent revaluation of Ibrox and his £50million ‘investment’ will make it very difficult for him to sell-up and leave the club. Chairman and club will be together for many years to come.

While our own experiences either side of the summer were bitterly disappointing, our comparative situation with Rangers today is purely a reflection of our greater football budget. We will lose the occasional game, and perhaps league to Rangers over the next decade and more, but the financial imperative – as always - will prove decisive.

Rangers will play in our shadow for a generation.

Paul - Sorry I posted this at the bottom of the last thread. Thought people might be interested in Hugh Keevins providing conclusive proof that he's an eejit.

Anyone ever wondered what happened to Stefan Klos? Looks like he ended up at Malaga if this report from the Barcelona website on last night's game is anything to go by:

Malaga tried to open their lines now and Ronaldinho exploited the space on 87 minutes, putting through Larsson, who'd come on for Eto'o on 70 minutes, and the Swedish striker looked up and chipped the keeper to round off a well deserved, if ultimately hard fought for win.

Also if you want a laugh how about this that I got in an e-mail this morning? Hugh Keevins' ratings on last night's game:

    CELTIC - Boruc 6, Telfer 6, Camara 6, Balde 6, McManus 6, Petrov 7, Lennon 6, Sutton 6 (McGeady 82, 4), Nakamura 8, Maloney 6, Beattie 6.

What are you hearing about the size of the debacle at MIH? Three of his subsidiaries have reported disappointing results in recent weeks, with two turning in losses and the other reporting much-reduced profits.
The shifting of the 50million pound Rangers debt to further inside the corporate structure fooled no one.
Do you reckon the Halifax Bank of Scotland are getting nervous?

Completely off subject so sorry in advance, but has anyone else recieved a copy of the new club catalogue?
And if so has anyone notice how much better it is compared to previous ones?

Loads of Nike stuff and so professional looking.

Also on a similar vein has anyone noticed the changes to the OWS in the past week?

Also looking much slicker (wouldn't be hard I know!).

Would make you think that someone is finally pulling this side of the business together and hopefully to the benifit to the WGS and the team.

Did not get a chance to post after the game last night. What a difference a few days make. We were fantastic, Stan played as we all know he can and was the complete box to box midfielder. Nakamura was magnificent his range of passing and his desire was what we payed for.

I thought McManus was solid last night and I also thought he stood out at Rugby Park.

I am glad GS is getting time to complete his task and I cannot wait to see the finished article if this is the early stages.

I will be interested to see how the media react to the draw at Almondvale which was a disaster compared to the Fir Park 4-4 at the start of the season for us.

Paul67 I hope you are correct in what you say. I think HBOS may well be getting twitchy or to be specific the Halifax side of that business.

    Its a good day

    Hail hail

    Paul67,
it will be interesting to see MIH results. Surely in a world where natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate, and are at a premium, MIM must be able to make record profits. NO? oh must be bad management then!!!

On the domestic dominance, I do hope you are right. As a guy who only really started going to the games on a regular basis from about 84/85 on, I used to wonder if I would ever see Celtic winning the league again during their NIAR. I suffered so much abuse. Also, since we have the statistics to say that we have not dominated Scottish football in the last 5 years (Eck is equal to MON), I really do want a period on undoubted, unquestionable domestic dominance.

Mind you, I don't want to be accused of being short sighted. A couple of Euro finals would be nice too.

Paul, I sincerely hope that your sources are as reliable as usual. Massive MIH debt and a fourth placed finish from our dignified friends from Govan would be quite entertaining.

As for Keevins, I removed my last post because I had thought that the ratings must have been a wind-up. But, after steeling myself and checking the DR website I find that that martinobhoy is not at it. The surprising thing is that it is surprising. Has anyone ever seen 7 being awarded in any ratings for the scorer of a hat-trick?

Great performance last night and all that without any full backs or strikers!

Nakamura's contribution is often overlooked but because of his one touch play, Celtic moved from one end of the field to the other with incredible speed.

Wallace and McGeady looked good when they came on, Wallace being the more composed. He provided Hartson with a number of crosses but unfortunately the big man failed to capatalise.

It will be very exciting when Zurawski returns as he appears to be on the same wave length as the midfield.(even Lennon is adapting his game for the new regime)

If anybody care to remember the first few minutes of the game...the silence of the crowd, the disjointed nature of the play(4 throw in's and 2 free kicks inside the first 60 seconds)

What a difference a goal makes!

Petrov was absolutely inspirational, a definite leader on the pitch as you can see when he go's bananas at Balde for going walka bouts.

Balde got him back though, with that point blank header right in the nuts!

Kojo although I disagree with you regarding Petrov, well done for sticking to your guns despite all the jibes.

Good to hear ''1 Paul Lambert'' and liked ''So Japan-easy!''

And all this with Rangers in financial turmoil, ah don't you just love it?

ps.Hope that George Best pulls through.

Paul I think our current position is reflected in the old saying "you dont know what you had till you lost it"... this for me can be explained by there being two generations of supporters being in the "you only sing when you're losing" section why because we didnt have a choice... perhaps thats really when the political as opposed to football songs crept in, with their sensesless defiance and up you*s to the system. I remember my first few games in the early to mid nineties going over on the school bus... and assortment of caretakers, PR RE Politics and religion teachers and 3rd-7th years (god those hard cuts :o) )... initially to the old hampden and then to the temp stand... the scene of one of my fondest early memories where poalo scored a late penalty to make it 2-2 in front of the temp stand and about 3 seconds into the celecrations i remember thinkin "is this stand up to this???? ... anyway I disgress that was in the old TB days.... then clame the turmoil of the DR JO and Wim days .... then came the MON era... I remember lookin round me about 25 mins into the 6-2 game and we didnt know what to do with ourselves it'd been a while since we were in this position.... MON realised that tryin to out SILK temas who could spend ten+ times what you could on silky players wouldnt work... time for the old fashioned way..... and for a while no-one noticed that it was a blitzkrieg as opposed to the celtic way... why cause they were winning ...then it became too predictable 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 against clubs who could barely get 5-8 thou at home and a few hundred away... but then it happened lubo left, henke left and the team cause that wa what it was..not a squad a team ..had gotten celtic as far as they could and furhter than they should... people realised that when teams had ten players in their third size and graft got u so far but then u needed a touch of class.. so people started asking had it been the mon or henke era... the new supporters had to deal with going from destroying crap spl temas and bullying and blitzing european teams to leaking goals losing leads and getting beaten by at best average euro teams who simply passed around the juggernauts.... now we are here...but where exactly is here... we will know a lot better at the end of next month.. then again in jan when we see what happens in the market... my only concern is that we have went from a 6ft 15 stone one trick ugly pony to a 5'6" 10 stone one trick pretty pony.. i.e. do we have a plan B

I don't think Naka's influence is being overlooked, I think he is key to the way we are going. He does need movement around him and I'm so glad WGS stuck with the same team who did not perform as well as I thought they might at Rugby park!

I think the reason he is not getting the fulsome praise he deserves is that it would be a breach of Stan's human rights not to get MOTM after scoring a hat-trick. How many times did the KOK get MOTM because he scored? He must have a cellar full of champagne!!

Some of the football this season has been an absolute joy & the manager has been brave enough to make big decisions. Hopefully this continues but it's obvious to see that the likes of Sutton, Hartson, Thompson, Pearson, Agathe etc don't fit into WGS long term vision of quick high tempo football. We all know the weak areas of the team that need improved & L'il Admiral is wise enough to bring in the right players.

Paul - do you think there is a major financial crash on the cards for Murray & The Dreamers or is it just a case of limited funds available for the Evil Empire?

Domination requires football talent, coaching and playing and without the guidance from a top drawer manager over the period the finances are irrelevant. How many of you think the score would have been much closer had for example Martin O'Neill been in charge of Motherwell last night?

Financial performance and football performance are utterly dependant on one another, it's symbiotic and any factors that we are in control of must have complete attention to detail and utmost care shown, and always monitored, through rough and smooth.

Work-in-progress is still the watchword. Nothing has been achieved as a result of last night in the same way as nothing was lost after drawing to Hearts. The jury is still out, but its enjoying its stay in a nice hotel. The foreman is getting a massage as I speak.

Nevertheless I enjoyed last night immensely and look forward to every match these days. If I'm still saying that at Christmas, or even on 20th November then I'll be dropping 'domination' into many a conversation.

Articles like this just add to my enjoyment of all things Celtic as we the Celtic fans take control of our own agenda rather than being subject to the destruction and sabbotage of others'.

TheMadMurph earlier alluded to Big Fecks record being the equal of MON. That is fair enough, but I would be interested to see the amount of league games played and points accumulated over their respective tenures. It will probably shock you just who far ahead of them we should have been. We should be sitting just now thinkin about 10 IAR.

I'm sure there are some book worms out there who would happily dig up this info??

The complete fixture list on the (newly redesigned) official web site can still be found by going into the "tickets" section - about half way down there's a link to the appropriate page.

I have reported to the web site development team that there is no access to the full list from the "match" page.

thepolarbear - whilst we are waiting on the exact figures didn't we win the league by 22 and then 15 points in MON's first two seasons then lost it (we won on the head to head) by a goal then won it by 20 (ish) points then lost it by 2.

So that makes it upwards of 50 points, probably nearer 60

I remember reading on here, I think it was BryceCurdy, describing MON as perhaps the unluckiest manager. In that, when he won the league it was by a country mile but when he lost it was by the narrowest of margins.

You and I know we have dominated the scottish game for the last 5 years, that is why the stats which show them in the best light possible are the ones banded about. Lies, dam lies and statistics.

That is why I want a period where, no matter how you look at it, we have utterly dominated. I have been watching the hoops long enough to remember not quailifying for Europe. Some of that for our friends across the city would be nice.

Their was a few that could get them a few years back and used to advertise in the Andytown News, but then it all stopped.

Then someone i know in the Hatfield told me that a guy who slept in and missed his boat over to Hearts game still got to see it on the TV, somewhere in the West, but he wasnt sure where.
I was at the game and knew it wasnt on any of the terrestrial channels, so dont know where or how he got to see it still.

Me and a friend phoned round the houses yesterday to see if we could find anywhere that could get it, but no joy and what a pitty because we still owe Motherwell a couple more hammerings at the very least!

Like other posters I noted the points awarded to Celtic players following the demolition of Motherwell last night--total 69 .Out of curiosity I added up the total for Rangers following the atrocious result at Almondvale ( a disaster largely due to to self inflicted errors) --total 65 points. It would seem in the Record's view that Celtic approaching their best are marginally better than Rangers nearing their worst.

Paul i dont think you can say that McLeish has lost the dressing room, we have no access to players opinions on McLeish as to has he lost the respect of the players.

I mean what more do they want, this guy is working with hardly any money and he stole two league titles from under or noses. So he must me a brave good manager to do that.

This will be the first and last time i will give McLeish credit.

Oh yeah and sign Petrov now Celtic no excuses now.

And its great to see sutton up front were he belongs.

At the game last night and was shocked at the standing ovation for MO SORRY the non standing ovation .I thought the guy put in a good shift and made some telling passes and tackles. I sit in the lions stand lower and i counted half a dozen including myself who stood but beatie got the whole house standing which i thought didnt put in as good a shift but still deserved a standing ovation as MO should have. Best football at Celtic Park for a long while

lets keep it up ... i havent been around for a while but i can tell you its great to be back and to be able to enjoy the heart of our club celtica amongst friends and genuine adversaries.

Paul, I really hope what you're saying is true, but I can't help think that with our own financial problems, how can we all of a sudden gain a decade of dominance because Rangers are going to have to tighten the purse strings as well? The other part of the equation is Hearts. Exactly how much Romanov is willing to put into Hearts is yet to be seen, but if they keep strengthening and get a decent manager in, they won't be easy to overcome either.

With all the chat about Lennoxtown, the need to improve the immediate environment outside the stadium, the need to provide Stan P with a contract that will keep him at Celtic Park etc, alongside the need to overcome £19m of debts, I can't see how we're going to be in too strong a position in coming years either. Is at all down to the dreaded amortisation again?

I'm not being negative here. I hope the talent we have coming through the youth system, coupled with clever signings of players such as Magic, Boruc, Zurawski and Du Wei, who are on less money and will hopefully earn us money commercially, will take us to the next level. I just have doubts about the idea of sustained dominance.

I normally go to Hubbards on Gt Western Road (underneath the infamous Clatty Pat's). It's not a Celtic pub as such, but the vast majority in it will be supporting the tic.

I watched the Ajax, Celtic champion's league qualifier recently and Sutton was immense!

This was one of his best games in a Celtic shirt as he was so strong, provided great link up play, fair shair of defending as well and of course a magnifecent header.

But now he seems to just have lost a bit of it. Of course he's a few years older now but last night a large majority of good moves broke down because of him.

Mainly because of little flicks that he tries to pull off far too much for my liking.I think it worked once and resulted in Petrov completing his hat-trick.

Maybe this could be his last season with us but hopefully we can say ''thanks very much'' and bring in some money in.

On the subject of Petrov and in particular his contract extension he is quoted as saying ''I always want to play for Celtic if they want me.''

He does have 18 months left on his current deal so huury.

Been busy the last 24 hours, apologies for not replying to direct questions (over 430 comments since I have had a chance to read properly).

Welcome to the new posters, Peter and any others I have missed.

Martybhoy, I completely echo what you say. Forget how the media rate Celtic; they only do it to sell advertising. In fact why is anyone still reading this stuff?

What do you expect from them, dull predictability? They are there to whip up some “C”.

And just before you hang them for this offence:

There is no harm in this particular act. If underrating a Celtic player makes you consider his performance and disagree, a journalist would say he has done his job.

Every now and then I say something a wee bit out there myself. If by stimulating debate a consensus is reached, the media has done its job.

Remember that article discussed here from The Guardian, ‘football fans are stupid’? It was the best article I have read all year, because it made me examine why I spend so much time and money on Celtic.

Look at the debate our good friend Kojo started over Stan Petrov. It clearly established the value of Petrov to the support.

Rossio, there is a degree of separation between Celtic and Rangers football budget today – which explains the difference in results on the park, and that difference will remain.

Hearts have been a surprise package as far as I am concerned. Remember, they are operating with a smaller budget again than Rangers.

I can tell you with complete authority that Celtic are planning to completely renovate the area outside the stadium. They have been busy for two years now buying up the land surrounding the ground – and are still doing so.

Once they have control of the land you will not see the stadium for shrubbery.

    Back to work now.

Absolutely agree regards McManus at Rugby Park. Thought it was his best Celtic shift by far. MOTM for me.

His Confidence is there to see now and he's playing right through the ball (as every good snooker player should). If he keeps that up we are gonna have to find a new position for Du Wei!

I honestly believe there is still loads of room for improvement on last nights performance.

It was absolutely brilliant, total football, but as was pointed out. Without our strikers being on form we managed to score 5!! No mean feat!

If Magic returns to the in the form he left we will be in for a treat.

Citibhoy I gather from your post you beieve Polarbear to be a bear in the other sense of the word? He's a tim!

Does anyone think that Rangers will sell Stefan Klos in January?

It's alot of money to pay for a 2nd choice goalkeeper and his contract is up on the same day as Petrov. Wattereus is up in June.

For what it's worth, I'm astonished that Klos isn't in the team yet.

Anybody hear the RR phone in last night?

They had (ex?)BBC reporter Charlie Mann on because he is also the spokesman(propaganda machine?) for Vlad 'the Impaler 'Romanov.

One call in particular was a pure gem to say the least.

    Michael fom Livingston's opening statement'' you're no even a puppet, you're a muppet! ''

He was spot on with the trouble of the counts intentions with Hearts and the poor ethics involved in booting out George Burley.

One to keep an eye on, especially if you want a nice flat in the Gorgie area....

I would not be at all surprised if Klos is re-instated as 1st choice keeper after last nights result, by all accounts Wattereus was at fault for the first goal.

The problem was that Wattereus hadn't done a lot wrong to warrant being dropped so I think Klos will be back in.

Personally I hope he doesn't, look at the difference bringing in a better keeper had on us.(not that DM was bad but AB is better)

    Paul,
Oh, happy day. Just made a whole lot better by your article. I do so hope you're right about Rangers' financial position. Utter ruin would suit me perfectly but mere domination for a generation will do for now. Thank God for Mr Murray.
All this and Celtic playing the Celtic way. Joy unconfound. Long may it continue. Thanks Mr Strachan. Here's hoping I'm still feeling as good at the end of November! If I am, dreams of European finals will be looming large.

On a seperate note, with the blue sky today, last night's goings on and Paul's era defining...''Rangers will play in our shadow for a generation.''...it really is a dear green place.

I loved last night's game and despite winning 5-0 I think that there could have been even more to cheer. Not that I'm complaining, I'd happily settle for this week in week out!!
We stroked the ball about in our own half loads, kept possession and switched play from wing to wing to stretch Motherwell. I loved watching this but we didn't penetrate as much as we could have done.
Also, our strikers weren't as productive as I'd have wished for. Sutton was a bit static and Beattie seemed to develop a habit of running in front of his defender when we had the ball in our defence, making him easy to mark. If we're playing it up to Sutton for a flick on then Beattie would be better being on the defender's blind side.
All small matters as we won 5-0 and Rangers dropped yet more points.

I agree with a few of the comments earlier, I can't remember much that Camara done wrong and he got a very warm reception when he was taken off from the crowd. Strangely EKBHOY68 (3:10 PM) said the opposite and I was sitting near him!
The entire back 5 looked assured - no obvious mistakes that I can remember but no major tests. Wallace really wasn't tested defensively but looked great going forward - a real threat and some great crosses.
If our youngsters continue to get chances in the team then it looks to be a very promising future. Players like Beattie, Maloney, Wallace, McManus, McGeady and Kennedy could be very important players for us.

    Guys

Last night - great stuff but we all seem to be on the Celtic rollercoaster.

On Sunday night and Monday there was hot debate and some wailing and gnashing of teeth with regards the performance at Killie

What a difference 48 hours can make with sweet football and an even sweeter scoreline - a just reward for excellent play.

I certainly know that I like this kind of feeling and positive thread more than the ones from earlier this week even if they were incredibly interesting

Lets hope the Bhoys give us many more of these

Thismancraig 3.44 I share your view that rangers will flog Klos in Jan.In fact I have held this view from soon after Wattereus signed and prooved such a adequate replacement for Klos.Since nobody on cqn is among the 469232 unenlightened souls who read the record I will expain how I arrived at this view. Shortly before Klos was injured the Record carried a number of increasingly strenuous denials that he was to leave Rangers.I believed his denials and concluded that the club were preparing the supporters for the sale of a hugely popular player (and one of the few sellable assets).I was completely convinced when Klos was injured the club imme
diately shipped in Watterous as thoug he was waiting in the wings I suppose that Advocaat probably advised Rangers of his reliability. As for reading the Record I make no apology for that. I read papers as diverse as The Jerusalem Post to the Clare Champion without nesessarily agreeing with them or feeling that my immortal soul is in danger.I do believe that Klos will be back from next week and if the rumour on the Rangers site of a more than usual Dutch /German dislike between the two is true it will be interesting to see how Watterous reacts
