Financial realities will push Celtic look to a generation of Glasgow domination

What has become the established Celtic back five of Boruc, Telfer, Camara, McManus and Balde have now played thirteen games together and have lost only seven goals – a remarkable contrast to the nine goals shipped during the first two games of the season.

After twenty years of indifferent failure to produce a quality addition to the first team, I had lost faith in our youth system. Stephen McManus has done nothing particularly spectacular this season, however, during these last thirteen games he has hardly put a foot wrong.

He is composed, and is now playing with a confidence you only get after a run in the team. When Gordon Strachan considered his central defensive options during the summer I am sure he put the prospective signings of Virgo and Du Wei ahead of McManus, not to mention Balde, Varga and the recovering John Kennedy.

The player got a break and has grabbed his opportunity with both hands.

Last night Celtic were excellent. Nakamura was perpetual motion; head up and one touch passing before moving into space. The first two goals reflected this; quick, pass and move football – just what we have been looking for all season.

After being the subject of considerable debate on Celtic Quick News this week, you could not have scripted the Stillian Petrov hat trick better. The one area of the team that did not completely click was the front line of Sutton and Beattie; neither of whom got a clear chance all night.

When your strikers are not getting goals, a match-winning midfield player is beyond price.

In some of my less prosaic articles from last season, I suggested that Celtic were on the cusp of a generational dominance over Rangers.

Seven years ago, after Celtic won the league, David Murray allowed Dick Advocat to run up a deficit of £35million in order to redress the Celtic advantage.

This splurge and the others that followed won Rangers several domestic trophies and cast Celtic in the role of ‘prudent’ losers. It was like playing poker with a crazy man. How can you win?

As revealed on Celtic Quick News earlier this week, some bloodletting will happen next month, when Alex McLeish will pay the price of losing his dressing room, a fact that was clearly demonstrated by the result against Livingston.

I have enormous sympathy with McLeish. For a start, he has won far more than he had any reasonable right to. More importantly, he was recruited to manage the decline of Rangers – a fan of the club who would sweat blood trying to escape the probability of failure.

Next week Murray International Holdings will report a most spectacular level of debt.

David Murray now has no choice but to run Rangers on a shoestring. His recent revaluation of Ibrox and his £50million ‘investment’ will make it very difficult for him to sell-up and leave the club. Chairman and club will be together for many years to come.

While our own experiences either side of the summer were bitterly disappointing, our comparative situation with Rangers today is purely a reflection of our greater football budget. We will lose the occasional game, and perhaps league to Rangers over the next decade and more, but the financial imperative – as always - will prove decisive.

Rangers will play in our shadow for a generation.

Paul - Sorry I posted this at the bottom of the last thread. Thought people might be interested in Hugh Keevins providing conclusive proof that he's an eejit.

Anyone ever wondered what happened to Stefan Klos? Looks like he ended up at Malaga if this report from the Barcelona website on last night's game is anything to go by:

Malaga tried to open their lines now and Ronaldinho exploited the space on 87 minutes, putting through Larsson, who'd come on for Eto'o on 70 minutes, and the Swedish striker looked up and chipped the keeper to round off a well deserved, if ultimately hard fought for win.

Also if you want a laugh how about this that I got in an e-mail this morning? Hugh Keevins' ratings on last night's game:

    CELTIC - Boruc 6, Telfer 6, Camara 6, Balde 6, McManus 6, Petrov 7, Lennon 6, Sutton 6 (McGeady 82, 4), Nakamura 8, Maloney 6, Beattie 6.

What are you hearing about the size of the debacle at MIH? Three of his subsidiaries have reported disappointing results in recent weeks, with two turning in losses and the other reporting much-reduced profits.
The shifting of the 50million pound Rangers debt to further inside the corporate structure fooled no one.
Do you reckon the Halifax Bank of Scotland are getting nervous?

Completely off subject so sorry in advance, but has anyone else recieved a copy of the new club catalogue?
And if so has anyone notice how much better it is compared to previous ones?

Loads of Nike stuff and so professional looking.

Also on a similar vein has anyone noticed the changes to the OWS in the past week?

Also looking much slicker (wouldn't be hard I know!).

Would make you think that someone is finally pulling this side of the business together and hopefully to the benifit to the WGS and the team.

Did not get a chance to post after the game last night. What a difference a few days make. We were fantastic, Stan played as we all know he can and was the complete box to box midfielder. Nakamura was magnificent his range of passing and his desire was what we payed for.

I thought McManus was solid last night and I also thought he stood out at Rugby Park.

I am glad GS is getting time to complete his task and I cannot wait to see the finished article if this is the early stages.

I will be interested to see how the media react to the draw at Almondvale which was a disaster compared to the Fir Park 4-4 at the start of the season for us.

Paul67 I hope you are correct in what you say. I think HBOS may well be getting twitchy or to be specific the Halifax side of that business.

    Its a good day

    Hail hail

    Paul67,
it will be interesting to see MIH results. Surely in a world where natural resources are being consumed at an alarming rate, and are at a premium, MIM must be able to make record profits. NO? oh must be bad management then!!!

On the domestic dominance, I do hope you are right. As a guy who only really started going to the games on a regular basis from about 84/85 on, I used to wonder if I would ever see Celtic winning the league again during their NIAR. I suffered so much abuse. Also, since we have the statistics to say that we have not dominated Scottish football in the last 5 years (Eck is equal to MON), I really do want a period on undoubted, unquestionable domestic dominance.

Mind you, I don't want to be accused of being short sighted. A couple of Euro finals would be nice too.

Paul, I sincerely hope that your sources are as reliable as usual. Massive MIH debt and a fourth placed finish from our dignified friends from Govan would be quite entertaining.

As for Keevins, I removed my last post because I had thought that the ratings must have been a wind-up. But, after steeling myself and checking the DR website I find that that martinobhoy is not at it. The surprising thing is that it is surprising. Has anyone ever seen 7 being awarded in any ratings for the scorer of a hat-trick?

Great performance last night and all that without any full backs or strikers!

Nakamura's contribution is often overlooked but because of his one touch play, Celtic moved from one end of the field to the other with incredible speed.

Wallace and McGeady looked good when they came on, Wallace being the more composed. He provided Hartson with a number of crosses but unfortunately the big man failed to capatalise.

It will be very exciting when Zurawski returns as he appears to be on the same wave length as the midfield.(even Lennon is adapting his game for the new regime)

If anybody care to remember the first few minutes of the game...the silence of the crowd, the disjointed nature of the play(4 throw in's and 2 free kicks inside the first 60 seconds)

What a difference a goal makes!

Petrov was absolutely inspirational, a definite leader on the pitch as you can see when he go's bananas at Balde for going walka bouts.

Balde got him back though, with that point blank header right in the nuts!

Kojo although I disagree with you regarding Petrov, well done for sticking to your guns despite all the jibes.

Good to hear ''1 Paul Lambert'' and liked ''So Japan-easy!''

And all this with Rangers in financial turmoil, ah don't you just love it?

ps.Hope that George Best pulls through.

Paul I think our current position is reflected in the old saying "you dont know what you had till you lost it"... this for me can be explained by there being two generations of supporters being in the "you only sing when you're losing" section why because we didnt have a choice... perhaps thats really when the political as opposed to football songs crept in, with their sensesless defiance and up you*s to the system. I remember my first few games in the early to mid nineties going over on the school bus... and assortment of caretakers, PR RE Politics and religion teachers and 3rd-7th years (god those hard cuts :o) )... initially to the old hampden and then to the temp stand... the scene of one of my fondest early memories where poalo scored a late penalty to make it 2-2 in front of the temp stand and about 3 seconds into the celecrations i remember thinkin "is this stand up to this???? ... anyway I disgress that was in the old TB days.... then clame the turmoil of the DR JO and Wim days .... then came the MON era... I remember lookin round me about 25 mins into the 6-2 game and we didnt know what to do with ourselves it'd been a while since we were in this position.... MON realised that tryin to out SILK temas who could spend ten+ times what you could on silky players wouldnt work... time for the old fashioned way..... and for a while no-one noticed that it was a blitzkrieg as opposed to the celtic way... why cause they were winning ...then it became too predictable 4-0, 5-0 and 6-0 against clubs who could barely get 5-8 thou at home and a few hundred away... but then it happened lubo left, henke left and the team cause that wa what it was..not a squad a team ..had gotten celtic as far as they could and furhter than they should... people realised that when teams had ten players in their third size and graft got u so far but then u needed a touch of class.. so people started asking had it been the mon or henke era... the new supporters had to deal with going from destroying crap spl temas and bullying and blitzing european teams to leaking goals losing leads and getting beaten by at best average euro teams who simply passed around the juggernauts.... now we are here...but where exactly is here... we will know a lot better at the end of next month.. then again in jan when we see what happens in the market... my only concern is that we have went from a 6ft 15 stone one trick ugly pony to a 5'6" 10 stone one trick pretty pony.. i.e. do we have a plan B

I don't think Naka's influence is being overlooked, I think he is key to the way we are going. He does need movement around him and I'm so glad WGS stuck with the same team who did not perform as well as I thought they might at Rugby park!

I think the reason he is not getting the fulsome praise he deserves is that it would be a breach of Stan's human rights not to get MOTM after scoring a hat-trick. How many times did the KOK get MOTM because he scored? He must have a cellar full of champagne!!

Some of the football this season has been an absolute joy & the manager has been brave enough to make big decisions. Hopefully this continues but it's obvious to see that the likes of Sutton, Hartson, Thompson, Pearson, Agathe etc don't fit into WGS long term vision of quick high tempo football. We all know the weak areas of the team that need improved & L'il Admiral is wise enough to bring in the right players.

Paul - do you think there is a major financial crash on the cards for Murray & The Dreamers or is it just a case of limited funds available for the Evil Empire?

Domination requires football talent, coaching and playing and without the guidance from a top drawer manager over the period the finances are irrelevant. How many of you think the score would have been much closer had for example Martin O'Neill been in charge of Motherwell last night?

Financial performance and football performance are utterly dependant on one another, it's symbiotic and any factors that we are in control of must have complete attention to detail and utmost care shown, and always monitored, through rough and smooth.

Work-in-progress is still the watchword. Nothing has been achieved as a result of last night in the same way as nothing was lost after drawing to Hearts. The jury is still out, but its enjoying its stay in a nice hotel. The foreman is getting a massage as I speak.

Nevertheless I enjoyed last night immensely and look forward to every match these days. If I'm still saying that at Christmas, or even on 20th November then I'll be dropping 'domination' into many a conversation.

Articles like this just add to my enjoyment of all things Celtic as we the Celtic fans take control of our own agenda rather than being subject to the destruction and sabbotage of others'.

TheMadMurph earlier alluded to Big Fecks record being the equal of MON. That is fair enough, but I would be interested to see the amount of league games played and points accumulated over their respective tenures. It will probably shock you just who far ahead of them we should have been. We should be sitting just now thinkin about 10 IAR.

I'm sure there are some book worms out there who would happily dig up this info??

The complete fixture list on the (newly redesigned) official web site can still be found by going into the "tickets" section - about half way down there's a link to the appropriate page.

I have reported to the web site development team that there is no access to the full list from the "match" page.

thepolarbear - whilst we are waiting on the exact figures didn't we win the league by 22 and then 15 points in MON's first two seasons then lost it (we won on the head to head) by a goal then won it by 20 (ish) points then lost it by 2.

So that makes it upwards of 50 points, probably nearer 60

I remember reading on here, I think it was BryceCurdy, describing MON as perhaps the unluckiest manager. In that, when he won the league it was by a country mile but when he lost it was by the narrowest of margins.

You and I know we have dominated the scottish game for the last 5 years, that is why the stats which show them in the best light possible are the ones banded about. Lies, dam lies and statistics.

That is why I want a period where, no matter how you look at it, we have utterly dominated. I have been watching the hoops long enough to remember not quailifying for Europe. Some of that for our friends across the city would be nice.

Belfast Bhoy do you know any bars that get any Celtic games on any of the foreign satellite channels?

Their was a few that could get them a few years back and used to advertise in the Andytown News, but then it all stopped.

Then someone i know in the Hatfield told me that a guy who slept in and missed his boat over to Hearts game still got to see it on the TV, somewhere in the West, but he wasnt sure where.
I was at the game and knew it wasnt on any of the terrestrial channels, so dont know where or how he got to see it still.

Me and a friend phoned round the houses yesterday to see if we could find anywhere that could get it, but no joy and what a pitty because we still owe Motherwell a couple more hammerings at the very least!

Like other posters I noted the points awarded to Celtic players following the demolition of Motherwell last night--total 69 .Out of curiosity I added up the total for Rangers following the atrocious result at Almondvale ( a disaster largely due to to self inflicted errors) --total 65 points. It would seem in the Record's view that Celtic approaching their best are marginally better than Rangers nearing their worst.

Paul i dont think you can say that McLeish has lost the dressing room, we have no access to players opinions on McLeish as to has he lost the respect of the players.

I mean what more do they want, this guy is working with hardly any money and he stole two league titles from under or noses. So he must me a brave good manager to do that.

This will be the first and last time i will give McLeish credit.

Oh yeah and sign Petrov now Celtic no excuses now.

And its great to see sutton up front were he belongs.

Paul, I really hope what you're saying is true, but I can't help think that with our own financial problems, how can we all of a sudden gain a decade of dominance because Rangers are going to have to tighten the purse strings as well? The other part of the equation is Hearts. Exactly how much Romanov is willing to put into Hearts is yet to be seen, but if they keep strengthening and get a decent manager in, they won't be easy to overcome either.

With all the chat about Lennoxtown, the need to improve the immediate environment outside the stadium, the need to provide Stan P with a contract that will keep him at Celtic Park etc, alongside the need to overcome £19m of debts, I can't see how we're going to be in too strong a position in coming years either. Is at all down to the dreaded amortisation again?

I'm not being negative here. I hope the talent we have coming through the youth system, coupled with clever signings of players such as Magic, Boruc, Zurawski and Du Wei, who are on less money and will hopefully earn us money commercially, will take us to the next level. I just have doubts about the idea of sustained dominance.

I watched the Ajax, Celtic champion's league qualifier recently and Sutton was immense!

This was one of his best games in a Celtic shirt as he was so strong, provided great link up play, fair shair of defending as well and of course a magnifecent header.

But now he seems to just have lost a bit of it. Of course he's a few years older now but last night a large majority of good moves broke down because of him.

Mainly because of little flicks that he tries to pull off far too much for my liking.I think it worked once and resulted in Petrov completing his hat-trick.

Maybe this could be his last season with us but hopefully we can say ''thanks very much'' and bring in some money in.

On the subject of Petrov and in particular his contract extension he is quoted as saying ''I always want to play for Celtic if they want me.''

He does have 18 months left on his current deal so huury.

Been busy the last 24 hours, apologies for not replying to direct questions (over 430 comments since I have had a chance to read properly).

Welcome to the new posters, Peter and any others I have missed.

Martybhoy, I completely echo what you say. Forget how the media rate Celtic; they only do it to sell advertising. In fact why is anyone still reading this stuff?

What do you expect from them, dull predictability? They are there to whip up some “C”.

And just before you hang them for this offence:

There is no harm in this particular act. If underrating a Celtic player makes you consider his performance and disagree, a journalist would say he has done his job.

Every now and then I say something a wee bit out there myself. If by stimulating debate a consensus is reached, the media has done its job.

Remember that article discussed here from The Guardian, ‘football fans are stupid’? It was the best article I have read all year, because it made me examine why I spend so much time and money on Celtic.

Look at the debate our good friend Kojo started over Stan Petrov. It clearly established the value of Petrov to the support.

Rossio, there is a degree of separation between Celtic and Rangers football budget today – which explains the difference in results on the park, and that difference will remain.

Hearts have been a surprise package as far as I am concerned. Remember, they are operating with a smaller budget again than Rangers.

I can tell you with complete authority that Celtic are planning to completely renovate the area outside the stadium. They have been busy for two years now buying up the land surrounding the ground – and are still doing so.

Once they have control of the land you will not see the stadium for shrubbery.

    Back to work now.

I would not be at all surprised if Klos is re-instated as 1st choice keeper after last nights result, by all accounts Wattereus was at fault for the first goal.

The problem was that Wattereus hadn't done a lot wrong to warrant being dropped so I think Klos will be back in.

Personally I hope he doesn't, look at the difference bringing in a better keeper had on us.(not that DM was bad but AB is better)

I loved last night's game and despite winning 5-0 I think that there could have been even more to cheer. Not that I'm complaining, I'd happily settle for this week in week out!!
We stroked the ball about in our own half loads, kept possession and switched play from wing to wing to stretch Motherwell. I loved watching this but we didn't penetrate as much as we could have done.
Also, our strikers weren't as productive as I'd have wished for. Sutton was a bit static and Beattie seemed to develop a habit of running in front of his defender when we had the ball in our defence, making him easy to mark. If we're playing it up to Sutton for a flick on then Beattie would be better being on the defender's blind side.
All small matters as we won 5-0 and Rangers dropped yet more points.

I agree with a few of the comments earlier, I can't remember much that Camara done wrong and he got a very warm reception when he was taken off from the crowd. Strangely EKBHOY68 (3:10 PM) said the opposite and I was sitting near him!
The entire back 5 looked assured - no obvious mistakes that I can remember but no major tests. Wallace really wasn't tested defensively but looked great going forward - a real threat and some great crosses.
If our youngsters continue to get chances in the team then it looks to be a very promising future. Players like Beattie, Maloney, Wallace, McManus, McGeady and Kennedy could be very important players for us.

Shortly before Klos was injured the Record carried a number of increasingly strenuous denials that he was to leave Rangers.I believed his denials and concluded that the club were preparing the supporters for the sale of a hugely popular player (and one of the few sellable assets).I was completely convinced when Klos was injured the club imme
diately shipped in Watterous as thoug he was waiting in the wings I suppose that Advocaat probably advised Rangers of his reliability. As for reading the Record I make no apology for that. I read papers as diverse as The Jerusalem Post to the Clare Champion without nesessarily agreeing with them or feeling that my immortal soul is in danger.I do believe that Klos will be back from next week and if the rumour on the Rangers site of a more than usual Dutch /German dislike between the two is true it will be interesting to see how Watterous reacts

Petrov is the one genuine world class player we've got. It's the mediocre performers round him that dont allow him to shine more often.

Paul. Hope you are right here with the "generation" of upperhand but we aint won nothing yet. TB in 90's allowed some terrific football to be 2nd most of the time if not all.

I do agree that next month will be the one which shapes our future. I do hope we are going to peak over the next couple of months and raise the perfomance levels to run away with this years honours.

The style which WGS has brought is begining to show but let's be in no doubt... players like Petrov we cant do without.

Just about recovered from last nights excellent display...as has been mentioned the fluency of passing was there for all to see....Naka when he plays well is head and shoulders above anyone else in Scotland....(still loving that first time pass he fed beattie with for Maloney's goal)
God's foot (copyright www.sixtee7.com) is learning the Scottish game reasonably quickly.

On the Petrov front...I am with Kojo although his stance has softened a bit from his original post on the subject....I would hate to lose him as he is the most consistent and IMHO the only "world class" performer in the team...HOWEVER he is not worth £6 million a year in wages (£5m opportunity cost plus wages) so if he doesn't sign he has to go....Lets hope he signs as he is the first name on the team sheet for me....

On the negative side: I still think we are two full backs and a central midfielder away from a very good team....

PS Was that really Jimmy Johnstone on the wing in the last 15 minutes?
BBJ on a one on one and Lenny on the overlap...a last defenders worst nightmare ;-)

With the movement of debt I would think the debt over at MIH must now be at least a quarter billion maybe more.

    Can anybody confirm those numbers?

Very funny article in todays Guardian by Nicky Campbell on Graeme Souness. He finishes by reminding us Graeme`s nose is blue and pointing in the direction of Ibrox.( Apparantly a large number of Geordies never took to him--Fancy that!) From the many hostile posts on the Rangers site many of them fear it may be true.If it is I suspect that the agony of Alec Mcleish may endure a little longer than even the most sadistic would wish as it would surely take a little time to ease Souness from St James while letting Rangers drift to the point where the fans are more concerned with getting Eck out than with who comes in

watching the people on this site is definately heartwarming, articulate, and funny.... the one bit im not so sure on is the bit where people change from doom and gloom to the league is ours!!!! all in the space of a week.... now as paul has said, his judgement is such that he feels we will have domination for a decade, a few other people agree strongly and then say how crucial the month of november is for this to happen???

my season ticket mates from work, ran up to me on monday stating"well, what about that ****" "nakamura will be away by january" "if thats how wee gingers gonna play his team then, its better we pack in now" i being the football knowledge, kindly explained to them that its been mentioned by WGS before, that away from home, celtic are going to take the sting out of games, and pass teams off the park, taking away the cup tie like atmosphere, "but thats ****, we love the away games for that" also the fact that the tiempo away from home is such that opposing players hammer into naka, as quick as possible, and at paradise, with the space he will get, then he will be the catalyst for all things good in our play at home... so therefore he wont be going home in january.... then along comes last night, BANG. now i for one love the fact that we are playing a european style of football, possible not as fast or freeflowing as TBs team.. but can that be expected right now? for too many years now a berkovic, or a juninho were what we needed, a di canio...but now, when we have one who has more assists than anbody else in british football. his inadequaces get highlighted much more so than his delights.... leaving the stadium last night(my 1st visit in 2 years)our faces where a throwback to the centenary year... that is how i remember celtic supporters leaving to go home.........as for that free kick, only davie provans in 85 was better......this next month doesnt hold the key to the season, leagues are won, well we all know that one....but if the season ticket holders watch performances like that, even 60% of the time, then i dont feel you will hear the grumbles that you heard over the last 5 years, and that alone will make WGS the right man for the job in my eyes........

Lenny is popping up left and right, as is Stan and Naka. The strikers are interchanging with the midfield. It's stunning.

Also caught the end of the daily huddle. Apparently NL Was level for the goal that was chalked off!!

    Paul-

Well done on your excellent article.

After the heights of last night-It was nice
to come in and read " rangers will play in our shadow for a generation ."

By the looks of things,it won,t just be our shadow they are living in.

After quite a few years in the doldrums it looks as though most of Scottish football could be about to drag themselves into the new millenium.

    Teams like hearts,kilmarnock,motherwell,
Hibernian and even Aberdeen-if they can get themselves a half-decent coaching team-are starting to see the fruits of the youth systems that they were forced to put in place by the stringent costcutting which was necessary to see off the shadow of bankruptcy.

The only team whose investment in youth seems to have failed are of course rangers.

I really can,t (through my green-tinted glasses)see a way out for rangers at this moment in time.

Your prediction may well come true but -

Do you honestly think CQN has room for yet another ORACLE ?

    :P

Haveny posted for a while again. Been reading faithfully every day though.

I was at the game last night and like one of the other posters said it was like leaving the stadium during the centenary season/ treble season. Definitely the best home performance of the season so far.

I was previously a bit dubious of Nakamura's role in the side. I thought he got bullied out of games too easily but last night he coped with some rough stuff from Motherwell and completely bossed the game. His cross field passing switching play from right flank to left was pinpoint every time.

I liked Maloney and Wallace on the left. They worked some great openings for Wallace to get crosses in but on the other hand they were hardly tested at all defensively.

I thought Lennon was level as well watching his goal on Celtic TV tonight. That was the only disappointment of the night.

If we play like that against the forces of darkness we will be in the nxt round of the mickey mouse cup and out of sight in the league.

BBC Sport links Ranieri with the Hearts job. Give it a couple of weeks and McLeish might even apply!

After last night's game, I got the impression that young Lions began to roar (...think 'jungle').

    I started to wonder...
Me wondering is never a good thing, by the way, but as I am typing with 2 indices (fingers) this could be longer than I first thought.

    I was thinking -
Motherwell...last game of last season...the old lion, rolling over, relinquishing(?)..
I got the impression that we were lacking leadership and desire.

    Meanwhile I was thinking -
Motherwell...first game of new season...the auld lion's kinsmen (a' wi' their ankles badly bitten) reinforce themselves wi' yung cubs, and come out with little spoils and under an intense glare...(...think 'jungle' again).

Meanwhile I was still thinking -
Motherwell...first match of second quarter (still following?), lions, tigers and teddy bears. I got the impression that we are strong, intelligent, and hungry.
The nature of the beastie is not the same !

Meanwhile I was still thinking -
Motherwell... no more problem any more.

    Then I started thinking -

weeminger and jimtim (lose the CAPITALS pull-eeease!),
The good figures reported for Murray's group were just small beer - a 4million rise in profits for one of his steel firms Austin Trumanns), who seem to have done fairly well of late. But their chairman notes that they are now in "what is proving to be a less stable market place." Oh dear!!
Last year, as I recorded on my blog in August:
By whatever method it was reached, Murray International Holdings Ltd announced it had net borrowings of £230m. Oh, but it has also guaranteed bank borrowings of subsidiary and associated undertakings of £140m.
This was before the £50million deal to take on Rangers' debts and another deal to buy out ENIC.
Before all this, MIH had a net worth of just £100million. And God knows how much massaging of the figures was needed to reach THAT figure!
Massive debt, worsening trading conditions, an imploding fitba team. All we need now is an impatient Halifax-Bank of Scotland or a change of approach by the auditors and you have the ingredients for a very messy omelette!
    With (casino) chips to go?
    Smells like pure BUTTAAHHH!!

I sit in Block 402 in the North Stand but couldnt get to the game last night.

I got this story from my sister who was waiting to collect her kids from school when one of her friends sons ran up and told her mum, who was talking to my sister at the time, that George, son of a well known centre forward/midfielder/centre half, had told him that he was going to live in Italy and he was going in the summer.

You have to bear in mind that the kids are at primary and possibly George heard his mum & dad talking about the possibility of going to Italy.

Raymondo7, I was not won over by our football in the late 90’s, not effective at all. The difference between then and now is that now we have the bigger budget, then Rangers had.

WeeMinger, by my estimates your figure is at the lower end of what I am expecting. Expect more than £¼ billion debt.

Welcome dk, good to hear from you.

Cheers Noel, money will win, it always does.

Thanks TheMadMurph, spreading the gospel like a true evangelist.

Thanks for that info Kojo. Reviews are more difficult to read than Ulysses, so the players have my sympathy.

Playing for Celtic must have enormous compensations, but I am sure it is an enormous burden.

The gallery do not play the game and do not take team instructions.

The "fourth dimension" comment captured a problem in two words.

You know I think of myself as a reasonable man, but on reading your splendid prose on the demise of Sandy and Ray it gave me a warm glow. The Germans have a word for it which I wish I could spell.

JimTim, JohnBhoy, The Murray group have benefited during the period to Jan 05 by high steel prices – they hold large stocks. The figures we will see next week will reflect these high steel prices.

They will not reflect the collapse in world steel prices since January.

I mean this most profoundly; ouch.

    Sixtaeseven-

    I,ve been thinking too....

    No !-don,t go yet..

Since Gordon Strachans, appointment as manager, and the subsequent statements about his "vision for Celtic".

Since our earlier display of the short sharp passing game against Dundee United..part of the Hibernian game..fair part of the hearts game.

    After watching the "total football"
of last night-it came to me.

I might not be totally correct but I really hope I am in the ball park-

The Ajax team ,which defeated AC Milan in the 1995 Champions League Final' played that lovely fast moving football that we enjoyed last night.

    Compare them-
    Van der Saar - Boruc

    Reizeger - Camarra/Wallace

    Frank De Boer - Telfer

    Danny Blind - McManus

    Ronald De Boer - Bobo

    Edgar Davids -Lennon

    Seedorf - Nakamura

    Kanu - Petrov

    Kluivert - Sutton

    Litmanen - Beattie

    Overmars - Maloney

Okay-we are not quite there yet but through my Super Green-Tinted Optimistic Glasses...

    We have made a start....

I definitely know where we want to end up...

Have I went too far ? again....

After watching last nights game (and comparing it to the Dundee Utd game) it hit me:

We can tear teams apart at will as long as they let us play by not diving into tackles and/or if we get a goal or two. It's like their walls cave in and it turns into a training match. However, when we play a Hearts or Kilmarnock side who will not give you a second on the ball without crunching into a tackle we struggle.

I think we need not only a 'hardman' who can play a bit but more people who can turn things around when we're losing it. Currently we have plenty who can play some amazing football when the rest of the team are playing but we need someone with more grit IMO.

Saying that... give us Dundee Utd or Motherwell any week!

One thing that worries me. I was working in the credit insurance field (dull, I know) until January this year. At that time Rangers were still regarded as a safe buyer, with reasonably acceptable credit limits available for their purchases.

Celtic on the other hand were viewed as a risk, and credit limits difficult to obtain.

Waht this tells me is that the financiers in general view the Murray portfolio as a whole, as strong enough to back Rangers. While I've no doubt that things are looking grim, they might not be as grim as we hope.

I look forward to the end of November.

I guess you mean Schadenfreude - roughly translated as the feeling of gloating at another's misfortune

I think those that say Motherwell gave us too much space are missing the fact that we stretched them all over the park

Celtic now have shape to add to their change of pace - keeping shape makes it a lot easier for players to switch positions and confuse the opposition has happened a number of times last night

A couple of postings here and on other 'brother' blogboards are attempting to whip up some anti_to a proposed testimonial for Alan Shearer. Why? As far as I have been made aware Shearer has an affection towards Celtic. I'm aware of NL's run-in with Shearer and the fact he turned us down as the famous song goes, and we got Larsson instead-marvellous. But why this anti-Shearer spin. If it is true and there is a testimonial in Newcastle-Brilliant!! Lets go and enjoy it and show supposedly the most the most passionate football fans in England how a team should be supported and at the same time be respectful of the fact that Celtic is Alan Shearers preferred choice, rather than the huns who would have seen it as an excuse for the last night at the proms with Englands favourite son. Make no mistake, if he wanted Rangers there he would have got them there. TAL

The warm fuzzies we are all feeling at the moment will no doubt extinguish at some point, and although I do derive some pleasure from the pain our less dignified city rivals are feeling at the moment I sincerely believe that Celtic will always need a strong Rangers and that includes any possible venture into the EPL.

Very positive blog today. Anyone remember when TFOD - or their fans with typewriters at least - were boasting of having two teams; one for Europe and one for the bread and butter (buttah?)

Why all the emphasis on MIM?
Why no analysis on the financial situation closer to home?
Why the focus on TFOD when it comes to the club's ranking?
At least Kojo is honest with all the talk of getting shot of SP.

    Regarding the issue with SP:
What is he on at the moment?
What is he worth if he signs a new 3yr contract?
Will he get carryover terms plus a signing on fee?
Or will he get an increase?
What is he worth in terms of basic pay?
Same as BB @ £28K pw?
    Any thoughts?

I find it quite troubling that no mention of the club's financial situation is allowed to develop. It is the big issue at present now that WGS has started to make progress but where apart from Kojo's ramblings is the discussion on a site that has in the past pushed its USP as the emphasis it places on the club's financial health.

    2004/05 - Title run-in / rank football = Lets talk money.
    2005/06 - CL flop / £8mill net down = Lets talk football.

For what it's worth I think the club will go after the "Full Petrov", £8mill to cover the loss of the CL money. Any movement on the "Big5" will be used to bring in new blood. If we keep SP we will need a "Half Petrov" (£4mill) to keep the debt steady. So by-by to BBJ and AT and their wages and say hello to nobody in particular.

The one thing that is evident is that we are looking at the incredible shrinking "CFC", wages/total football costs down to £25-6mill this year with a target of £20mill for next year? I wonder if the season book prices will move to match.

That is why I do not think that SP will be made any realistic offer, the money won't be made available, it will be re-run of the CB saga of the summer, look out for the statement saying that

"I had to go, the club made me a brilliant offer but the lure of being part of the 'Casino Club' was too much too much. The casino in question is Wigan not Monaco.
That's a little joke for all you Northern Soul fans out there.

    Finally who is Kojo?

    1) PL's mum?
    2) AV's agent?
    3) WGS's wife?
    4) BQ's lawyer?

And should we care given all the patronising drivel that he comes away with?

    Kojo = Board plant!?!

The story below is from the New Celtic WebSite

CELTIC’S social role in the community has received a ringing endorsement from the European Parliament. Belgian MEP Ivo Belet visited Glasgow this week as part of a study group looking at football and whether the sport has a social responsibility as well as an economic role to play.

And having seen the work the club is doing, for example through the Celtic Education project in conjunction with Glasgow City Council, as well as looking at the work of the Celtic Charity Fund, the Euro politician was in no doubt that the Celtic example is one other clubs throughout Europe should follow.

Mr Belet told the Celtic website: “There were two reasons for coming over here. One was to do with the European Parliament, which is looking at football and whether its role should be just economic or should there be a social dimension to it as well.

“The study trip to Glasgow was good in that we were able to see in Celtic an example of football playing a social role in the community.

“The other reason was to look at Celtic and see how what they are doing could be applied to Belgian teams, and certainly, the Celtic example is one that should be followed.

“People in Belgium are already very well aware of Celtic and its supporters, and the fact that both UEFA and FIFA made special awards to the fans.
“And Celtic have been very successful in fulfilling their social obligations.”

There are already strong links between Celtic and Belgian football. The Belgian FA actually modelled its own Social Charter on Celtic’s Charter and Mission statement, with Martin O’Neill accepting a copy of this at the time prior to the Champions League match against Anderlecht in Brussels.

And the Belgian FA have continued to promote Celtic as an excellent example of a community club.

Mr Belet will be making a presentation in February 2006 on the social role of football and how important it is to a community and society. And his trip to see what Celtic are doing will certainly play a central role in his presentation.

For new readers, several of the posters here write in their own fashion. With the aim of making things perfectly clear here are some of the commonly used terms as I understand them:-

C - Controversy, if you can't print good news just make it up

Asset management - this means taking all your old lamps out to the rag and bone man and getting a new shiny lamp that won't make your wishes come true

Ray - refers to a Manta Ray a type of sea dwelling creature that flaps around the ocean

Sanny - is a type of old style trainer, not much good when compared to new trainers like Admirals

Rory - is a lazy journalist

Karren Brady - for some a looker who runs a football club and wants to help us manage one of our assets

Karen Brady - someone's ex from the pub

Buttah - pure butter, just the thing or a brighter future

lol and lol - general sentiments on this site towards Karren Brady either lots of love or loads of laughs

First post - one of the highest accolades is to post first just after Paul 67 posts, some people (they know who they are) don't post any relevant point or just ask is this a comment?

For me one of the most interesting things about last night was the little admiral's use of substitutions.

Of our two fullbacks, I would say Telfer is the weaker. With the game in the bag, and hence the opportunity to tinker with the defence, I would say an Agathe for Telfer switch would have been more appropriate. Was the latter even on the bench??

I am in neither the "pro" or "anti" Agathe camp, but it looks to me as if his day's as a Celtic player are well and truly numbered.

I would also draw similar conclusions from the fact young Aiden came on ahead of Thomson; but I'm led to believe he was suspended. Can anyone confirm this?

Needless to say, I think Thommo's days are numbered as well.

On a different subject, after just watching the Daily Huddle, can anyone tell me why we pay Murdo McLeod to voice his opinion?

There he was, waxing lyrical on all things Celtic. As sure as night follows day, when we inevitably get a bad result he'll be puting the boot in, either in the Daily Ranger or Radio Scotland.

For me the guy's sold his sole and should not be entertained on any official channels.

Having endured Murdo, my spirits were quickly lifted when I inadverantly stumbled upon a top comedy channel - Rangers TV!!

You wouldn't believe it. First of all there was Big Feck, manager of Dignity FC, claiming the ref denied them two stonewall penalties.

After listening to his post match comments it was back to the studio for more incisive analysis from Derek Ferguson and, wait for it, ANDY CAMERON!!

Here was me thinking the pantomime season didn't kick off 'til mid-Novemeber!! What a laugh, I've never listened to such inane drivel in all my days.

Anyway, fingers crossed we can build on last night's fine performance. Unfortunately, it's been a case of one step forward, two steps back over the past few weeks. Hopefully we can crush Dundee Utd and kick on from there.

p.s. Paul, at the risk of appearing a smart arse: schadenfreude.

Love the posts- the voice of reason- keep it up.

I hope your wrong though, in the same vein I have discussed with Kojo. I would be livid if we were sacraficing the team to service the shortfall... we are a football club and as Mr Lawwell and B. Quinn have said we are looking toward long term income, i.e. sponsorship deals etc. so having the best team possible on the pitch not only goes towards guarenteeing wins (obviously there can be no guarentees in football but the best team possible helps).

Getting wins gets us into Europe not only getting us in touch with the champion's League cash cow but also raising our profile and strengthening our hand when negotiating our long term incomes.

Have to admit I'd have no problem paying Stan what BBJ gets and get rid of BBJ 28k is an expensive sub.

I would much rather sacrafice the "Half Petrov" and recieve no players in return than lose the "Full Petrov". Two subs for one of the first names on the team sheet? easy choice really, no?

not the most coherent post but its late and I'm ready for bed.

Noel/Kojo IMO formations relate to where the players try to get to when they are off the ball - in that sense we played 442 last night but you are right we were so fluid that often 2 midfield players managed to simultaneously support the front two - when they did the others filled in

lubo,I was on another Celtic site this afternoon and so many of the posters seemed to be of the opinion that Wallace at left-back was desparation.

    I couldn't disagree more.

I thought his introduction breathed new life into us at a timewhen the game had gone slightly flat,he pushed forward at every opportunity and his delivery into the box was good too.

I believe Ashley Cole used to play as a striker but wasn't brilliant there,so he was moved back to full-back as his manager saw something in him and felt he could play there. He spent a period at Crystal Palace as the defensive side of his game wasn't so good, but he worked hard and got into the first-team at Arsenal.

In my opinion,he is currently the best left-back in world football.

If Wallace can add to his game and work hard on the training ground WGS may just have unearthed a hidden gem.The fact that people don't seem to think that he is the best left-sided midfielder in the world is irelevant.Time will tell if has what it takes, but I was impressed with his half hour cameo last night.

I also think that it speaks volumes for our manager that he is trying to utilise the players at his disposal to their fullest extent.

    That’s it VertWolf, GM, thanks.

Edward, I do tend to look on life with a distinctly green view. If you look at the shifting sands of supremacy in Glasgow it tends to move in twenty year cycles or thereabout.

Sure one club will win against the cycle every now and then, but the upper hand does not change often.

Celtic were behind from the war until 1965, and on top until 1986. Rangers held way until 2000. I know the trophy count in recent seasons leaves room for dispute, but I think we are five years into a new cycle.

Agree that although Wallace was not at all tested defensively last night, he could well strike up a great double act between himself and Maloney.

The over-lapping and inter changing posistions are a joy to watch.

However their combined heights barely reach Bobo's knees!

KOJO and NOEL Regarding the formation of Celtica, didn't the 'lil admiral' say he wanted to build his team to be able to play against any type of team and in any situation?

That's why it's pivitol to be able to be adaptable and change posistions and style when ever needed.

I really believe that if the progress rate continues at this level then we are definitely on to something.

The quality of the goals last night would grace europe's elite dont doubt it.

On a different note about the idea of a settled defense , we will see changes on the horizon with Balde off to the african nations cup. So Du Wei and/or Virgo will be on hand give or take injuries. I just cant see Varga getting back in.

Agathe to be punted in january as I for one am sick of mouthy players and the inflated ego syndrome of some living on past reputations. If the WGS reign so far has taught me anything its honest hard work gets you just desserts. If your good enough your in , if not , goodnight.

    My dear friend, Jack,

Loverly name by the by..... Jack!

It always represents Money and Plenty of it to me......But that is another tale.....

Ah! I am afraid that the 23 Skidoo, that I am referring is a saying, much used by College Coeds, Circa early 1920s probably arcing out in the 1930s used by the Rudy Valee contemporary fans.

I happened to know Dear old Rudy in his declining years.......

Very erudite..... A complete and utter Anglophile....... Loverly Man.

    A very staunch Yalie!

He once even let me warble a song or two using his Legendary Megaphone!

Sounded great! Or so I have been told!

    Now my tale is told.

    Hail! Hail!

    Kojo.

Big Liam I don't think Guinea qualified of the African Nations.
They didn't make it for the World Cup and I think the qualification doubles up for both competions.

    VertWolf, BankieBhoy.

    Thanks for your comments.

I agree that Ross was not fully tested defensively. It is however, an interesting point about "reformed" full backs.

Does anyone know how many (really) successful full backs had originally previously played in other/forward positions?

Without placing a burden on the young lad's head, I think Ross might be an alternative at left back.

I agree with your point, BankieBhoy, about the manager "trying to utilise the players at his disposal to their fullest extent". Very Good Management indeed, in my view.

I would love to know the thoughts of WGS, and, of course you clever Chaps at CQN.

    Lubo.

Brief history of our relationship with the subject of an upcoming testomonial with the Celts.

Alan Shearer infamous for 'accidentially' kicking Neil Lennon in the head.
English media protected captain fantastic...''never!' they shouted.

    But even before that....
    Henrik's song.Originally...
We'll keep on prayin' that you keep playin, oh please don' take my Larsson away''

Quickly changed to ''we went for shearer but he was dearer''
Regarding transfer speculation between player and club.

Fast foward to pre season and a friendly with the toon army.
Song in full swing untill a rash challenge I belive by the said Mr Shearer.

Next time song is sung lyrics are unamously changed for the rest of history to ''we went for Shearer but he's a Wa*ker!''

As far as I can remember anyway.

one last post then I'm really off.

I mentioned a while back about attacking full-backs andwingers I think wee Ghord is proving me right!!

With attacking full backs and wingers seemingly on the "wrong" wing we can effectively play with 4 up front!! yes thats 4!!! Thats your 4-2-4 Kojo!! Although more like 3-3-4 on the attack.

With Maloney on the left and Naka lurking on the right they can cut inside allowing wee Ross and Telfer to overlap... this is where there "wrong" wing comes in... they are now in prime postion to shoot on their good foot!!

The only pre-requisite for this system is a top class holding midfielder, who can cover the back two.

Interestingly this is the exact system that won us the European Cup!! If we didn't have full backs going forward Tommy Gemmell may never have score that goal!!

It requires the utmost discipline. If one fullback is forward the other MUST stay back- something I dont think Mo has grasped...yet.

As an example, Arsenal a few years back played a not so different system. Pires(left winger) in the middle or on the right and Ashley Cole(the most attack minded full back I've ever seen) on the overlap and they played the most beautiful football. Notice Viera was their adaptable middle man also.

So Ross fits this to a tee!!! I should get into this management malarky, easy peasy Japan-easy! :-)

    TBE.

Agree with just about everything you said there TBE, with one small observation.

When TG (who started life as a winger by the way) scored the first goal in '67, It was not only passed to him by JC our Right Back, but Tommy was on the wrong side of the field.

Everybody thought they had broken Stein's golden rule, but according to Tommy and Jim at half time JS had told JC that rather than squaring the ball as he had been doing in the first half, he should cut it back to give Celtic the advantage over a blanket defence.

Tommy did however add the rider, that if he hadn't scored he and JC would have been in for a bollocking!

    Paul,
still love the site. The banter on the blog is often very entertaining. However, I do miss the thoughtful, factual articles of the early days.

Any chance of a proper primer for Murray's financials....a researched piece that gives us some context and tells us what to expect and what it might mean?

You've made some references, but they are limited. The projected debt level is meaningless without the appropriate ratios, and info on the owners of the debt.

I fear that the figures will come out, we will all say that the debt is 'big', but be none the wiser as to what it might mean.

    Enlighten us please.....:)

Don't get me wrong, i am a HUGE fan of Maloney, i thought he played magnificently against motherwell and had two magnificent moments in the first half, scoring one and creating another one with a pass that eluded no fewer than 4 motherwell players!

However, i do sense that he was playing slightly out of position. His best moments were all when cut inside, i am not complaining when he has moments like that, but when looking at the amount of times he lost the ball on the wing and poor defensive play, i just think the guy is being played out of position and wonder if better oposition may punish that.

I do sincerely hope that this is the biggest problem Celtic will face, it is definately not major. Don't take this as a criticism of the wee man, in my opinion we have a Gianfranco Zola mark 2 in SM, but do you think we can make him into a top notch left midfielder as apposed to the top notch forward/attacking central midfielder he already is?

how did nakamure manage to put that free kick in? Absolutely magnificent never seen a ball dip and swerve with so much power, FANTASTIC!!!!

Petrov's third was magnificent too, this is orgasmic football! MAGNIFICENTLY weighted pass by nakamura even better dummy by sutton and larsonesque finish by petrov, oh my word, is this Brazil in disguise?????
