Quiet site this afternoon. I'm a bit nervous I have to say. You were absolutely right Paul about this being an important test.
Also nice to be talking about Celtic rather than Burley or McLeish, just a pity that we have to put up with the boys in blue commentary team.

Pleased to see Maloney and Beattie on. Lets hope for a big performance from Sutton today.

No Du Wei on the bench.

Wee Chick just asked WGS about an impending £5m bid from Birmingham in january for BBJ. WGS didn't try and discourage such talk saying "every player is potentially for sale" or words to that effect .

Early pressure from Kilmarnock easily dealt with. Midfield still settling down (I hope!)

Naka knocked off the ball three times in the first 7 mins, only one free kick given.

good tracking back by Maloney - saved a certain goal

  • At 23/10/05 14:17, Blogger fencelt said…

Three chances for Kilmarnock in as many minutes. One in particular could have been a goal. Ball breaking down in midfield and most of the play in our half just now.
Corner to Kilmarnock (their second) cleared but comes straight back again before Boruc collects. He then throws it straight to a Killie player who, thankfully, couldn't control it.

  • At 23/10/05 14:20, Blogger Paul67 said…

The opening 15 minutes have been a bit sedate from Celtic. Lots of unproductive passing.

Kilmarnock break quickly when they get the ball and have made a few chances, one of which they should have scored with.

    The first Celtic chance.

Midfield play going through Maloney rather than Naka who has been very quiet for the last 15 mins.

goal has settled us down qw are playing with more belief now.....defence still looks a bit shaky tho

Celtic are playing a very patient passing game. I am resisting the urge to shout ‘get it forward’.

Kilmarnock are happy enough to concede possession when we are knocking the ball along the back line but are competing when we try to move forward.

The result is we have all the ball but none of it in the last third.

  • At 23/10/05 14:39, Blogger fencelt said…

Some nice attempts to play quickly though the middle of the Killie defence (which led to the goal). Nice to have the variety of this plus going wide where Maloney or Camara are putting crosses in.

  • At 23/10/05 14:39, Blogger ItaliaBhoy said…

still think we are lightweight in the middle. sutton is not mobile enough.

  • At 23/10/05 14:44, Blogger Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo said…

Paul this lack of bite in the final third is a major obstacle for us. We`ve had problems with all the top teams and some of the bottom teams in the SPL when teams are playing 10 men behind the ball. With the GS way of playing football our wing backs dont hit the bye line that often - Telfer rarely, Camara not often enough and I would like to see Petrov, Maloney and Nakamura have more shots from distance. They all have the ability to get shots off on target from a distance of 20 meters but rarely do so. Its asking for punishment to play purist football against defensive 10 men behind the ball opposition. This is why its important to mix it.

I expect to see BBJ come on with 30 minutes to go

    Hail Hail

ItaliaBhoy - I was just going to say - Maloney and Naka in midfield is very risky. How is Maloney's end product? Is it good enough for Celtic?

  • At 23/10/05 14:48, Blogger ItaliaBhoy said…

Kevtic, Shaun looks a bit outnumbered- Naka is neat, but not dominant. Sutton is too slow in this position, and Lennon is deep.

  • At 23/10/05 14:50, Blogger Paul67 said…

    Half time Kilmarnock 0 - 1 Celtic.

After the opening 15 minutes Kilmarnock never got close to the Celtic goal as we kept the ball. The final ball has been poor, lots of short-misplaced passes. If we get these right we will score lots.

  • At 23/10/05 14:51, Blogger MickMac said…

watching the game half time 1-0 to the tic, it seems jock Brown is still bitter with his parting from the hoops saying the challenge by Balde on Boyd was a good shout for a penalty, even Hately disagreed with him

    HT Kilmarnock 0-1 Celtic

Very sluggish performance in the first half by Celtic. We had our best spell just after we scored but failed to create any more real chances. Can't recall us testing their keeper other than the goal. Kilmarnock are pressing hard in midfield and not allowing Maloney, Petrov or Naka any time on the ball. Uf front, Sutton and Beattie are not playing well together. Defensively we look solid - Boruc looks very commanding.
Boruc - Solid handling and good distribution
Telfer - Another good performance - does the easy thing well
Bobo - Good defensive performance, helped restrict Kilmarnock to long range efforts
McManus - Finding Boyd a handful and missing out on a few high ball challenges. Otherwise solid
Camara - Settled down again this week and playing well. Good distribution and good support for the midfield
Maloney - Struggling to make an impact this week. Maybe an opportunity for Aiden to get on late in second half
Petrov - Took his goal well and working hard in the middle
Naka - Pushed off the ball too many times but to his credit has worked hard to make himself available at all times. Needs a goal to give him a lift
Lennon - Typical Lennon performance - doing the holding role behind our other 3 midfielders
Sutton - Not his best game. Struggling to link with Beattie. Did well to feed Petrov for the goal
Beattie - Not getting much of a look in today - playing a lot wide right rather than through the middle

Overall, we need to keep possession more in second half and provide Sutton and Beattie with better service. One goal is unlikely to be enough.

Not inspiring stuff but still think we will pick it up a gear and win comfortably

    Full time Kilmarnock 0 – 1 Celtic.

5 mins 15 secs. Of added time in a game without a significant stoppage.

Not a convincing performance, but a very important victory.

  • At 23/10/05 15:54, Blogger ItaliaBhoy said…

    FT 1-0.

Overalll, a painful watch. Killie are dire, but we really struggled. 5mins injury time was little short of a scandal.

But an important three points nonetheless.

The fans keeping the ball must have added all of 30 seconds to the game.
Anyway, full-time, poor performance but result ground out. To be positive Killie rarely got through to Boruc in the second half but not nice to watch us containing Kilmarnock. Still, six points ahead of Rangers and within striking distance of Hearts will do me for now.

I only heard the commentary today. I never saw the game. While I am more than happy with the three points away at Kilmarnock it doesn't seem that we can kill teams off. Have we improved since the Aberdeen and ICT games ? Livingston having been despatched are rock bottom of the SPL. GS must be getting worried at this stage as it sounds like we have not improved but have hit a plateau.

While I welcome a more competitive SPL and that seems to be the case this year. We need to look at how these teams have improved and do likewise.

    Hail Hail

  • At 23/10/05 15:59, Blogger mncelt said…

Hard won 3 points. Ref gave us nothing today, Naka was fouled consistently but was given nothing. Clear penalty denied then 5 mins exta added when Killie were on top ?
If truth be told, a dire performance from the bhoys. The defense did their bit but the rest were decidedly average.
CH67 talking about Fargo right now :)

As Paul67 pointed out on Friday away victouries for top three have been hard to come by. Therefore this is an excellent result especially with such a light midfield. Hopefully with the confidence results like this will bring better performances will follow.

WGS says 6 players didn't come up to scratch. most critical I have heard him in SPL.

This game was reminiscent of some of the worst moments under MON last year- flat, ugly, and grim.

The last two games have seen the fluency of the Livi game disappear, I hope we can get it back soon.

don't like to get on at players, but what is it that Strachan see's in telfer that i can't? At the start of the season i thought he was an average player who would be able to do a job and be fairly consistent. In the game today and against he seems to only be able to make the very simplest of passes, doesn't make enough tackles and does very little as far as attacking is concerned.

also, why is it that agathe is not being played? I don't he think he would be any worse than telfer and would definately give us another attacking option, any theories?

And thirdly, what has happened to Varga? I dont rate the guy at all, but has he just been cast into the wilderness of is he injured?

  • At 23/10/05 16:25, Blogger JimmyK said…

Listened to the game on radio, it did not sound like a great game. However, it is the results that count at this stage. In that regard, it was a crucial victory.

The passing style approach being adopted by WGS is the right one in my opinion. It is taking time for the team to adjust to. It is also difficult against well orgainsed teams, particularly if when we are lacking in pace and movement. However, I think that if we can hang in with this we will the reward in the long term.

The key thing is that we have 6 point gap over Rangers at this point and a run of games coming up that we should win before the November old firm clash.

November will be a big month, let's hope we can keep it up.

  • At 23/10/05 16:36, Blogger Kevtic said…

Henri - It is annoying that Telfer is still in the team when we know we have a better player in Agathe for this position kicking his heels.

Even playing Agathe in front of Telfer I believe would improve the team with Naka or Maloney on the left.

I really believe it is about time that the the powers that be at the club start pushing for Uefa appointed officials, or start sending tapes of the games to Uefa for review. It's extremely apparent that SFA are not able to manage (or nor do they seem to want to) these poor excuses for refs. It's extremely frustrating to see some of the decisions made and have absolutely no recourse. Why is it that the Huns are the dirtiest team in Europe and when the play in the SPL are no where near as dirty "statistically"

    Pass marks:

I only heard the match on the radio.

However, sounded like a lot of the old guard were the ones who did the business.

If this is the case Wgs still has it all to do and do or don't we need a class midfield player?

Good result though, lots of sides will struggle there this season.

  • At 23/10/05 16:55, Blogger malone19 said…

Who do you think the players who weren't up to scratch according to WGS where?

I didn't think anybody had a good game today but would put it a lot down to the surface.

Dissapointed with the front two and wish Nakamura would make some tackles. Thought Maloney wasn't as potent going forward but saved us on more than one occasion at the back. The defence were OK but the passing and clearences were poor. Thommo was IMO not up to scratch when he came on and Hartson didn't really have much to do.

The only pass marks I would give would be to Maloney, Petrov, Balde and McManus. Camara did ok I suppose and I have to agree that Telfer was pretty shaky today (I usually think he does a job).

Although the performance was a dissapointment I think we have to remember that 3 points in games like these are what is needed to be champions.

Was at the game. The ref was a disgrace. Gave Celtic nothing and allowed them to do as they pleased. I have never seen 5 minutes added at the end of a premier league match and it has been justified as we all know at Celtic park a number of times. Was behind the goal where the ball was kept. Their keeper Smith was swearing at the fans to give him the F**** ball and naturally the support did not take too kindly to that. He also made a gesture to the suuport none of which I'm sure will appear in the Ref's match report. All in all three points but a flat performance. I got the impression that Sutton is unhappy for some reason, if that's the case wgs has to take action and not play him. Could not really understand why Beattie was taken off as he gave much more that Sutton. We will be better on Wednesday - I hope!

I was interested to read some very apt comments last night on the 'dumbing down' of football coverage on radio in Scotland. The BBC are not alone in this. Clyde & Real Radio have long left the basics of good broadcasting journalism behind:wit, insight, perspective and informed comment. Instead we have a rare blend of low brow ignorance camouflaged by wholly misplaced arrogance, Keevins for instance.
However,as someone said, the BBC have a special responsibility to our society and in this particular area they have abandoned that burden. Take the case of our friend and so-called 'Motherwell'fan. here is a man who for ten years now has glorified the 'Buckie/Ned' culture of west Scotland. He celebrates in it in what passae for his humour, indirectly encouraging anti-social behaviour and attitudes. Yet in his private life he apparently lives the life of the west-end intellectual, far from the despair of the Lanarkshire poverty he uses to fund his own shabby aspirations. Any other civilised society would shun the hypocrisy of this creep, but in Scotland he is celebrated.

Sorry- should have said I was referring to Tam Cowan. Or Thomas as he's known on the Byers Road

The referees giving us nothing is nothing new.

I think a few players like Thommo, Sutton know that soon their time at Celtic could be up. Well unless they want to stay their level of performance and attitude needs to pick up or we should hawk them. They need to find their appetite again for games against Kilmarnock and ICT or stop short changing. We have more than enough cover and they are earning a relative fortune.

If Agathe is not willing to sign an extension to his contract and his agent is demanding more money he should only play in emergencies. Same with Varga.

Rangers are 6 points behind and Hearts MAY start to falter now so we are in a relatively good position.

I see Sutton, Thommo and Agathe leaving before BBJ. I hope Sutton stays and shows appetite again as he is imho a legend

Nice to get three points but very poor performance.
Too many side passes and back passes for my liking, also too many little back flicks and dummies not coming off and losing possession.
I think Strachan has to decide who is best 11 really are.
I don't want to be negative about Telfer but surely Agathe has far more to offer, especially going forward.

I've just read jeffries after match interview, kilmarnock according to him deserved at least a point. It's always a mistake he never praises Celtic we should have won 4-0 with the missed chances in the second half

    Been reading the updates-

    Bazza67 2.28pm

says that brown and hately were "sick" after the Celtic goal.

Were they really that blatant ?

Noel mate im afraid they were.....then back to the studio to hear the unbiased comments of billy dodds!!!!
think we should all cheer up a bit, 3 points behind the league leaders and six ahead of the huns who would not have given there left arm for this outurn after the the well 4 4 at start of season.......there will be more dissapointments ahead but we are still in a very much better position than most would have expected

    Hi Noel:

Don't know if you heard wee chicks latest.

5mil. bid for BBj in Jan. from Birmingham, with other premier outfits watching developments.

    Personally i'll take it!

Save us selling Stan to help balance the books and finance the incoming 6 players according to the Mail on Sunday.

Sounded very much like a grind it out style performance, with one or two really good periods of possession stuff.

Sober weekend by the way ,how about you?

Just back from the game and it was one of the worst I have seen. We were truely awful and thankfully Kilmarnaock are like most of the teams in the spl absoultley garbage.

This ia a very poor league and it is there for the taking this year. It's the worse huns team in years and hearts will now implode so it's timne for us to grasp the mettle in january and improve our team.

We have a ok side but it needs quality.

    Boruc what a keeper
Camara did well going forward but useless as a defender.
    Balde played well
    McManus deserves his place
Telfer garbage it's a discrace a donkey like him can get paid by celtic even wear the hoops.
Nakamura ok in patches but must give more he bottles tackles too much.
    Lennon a rock
    Maloney fantastic wee man
Sutton i agree his mind is elsewhere
Beatie he runs and runs but he's not up to much.
Stan when we sell you, as we will surely do our team will crumble.

What i am rambeling on after supporters bus lager is if we buy a right back and a playmaker who is not a bottler and shadow we can walk this league but please not funded by selling stan as without him today we were and are garbage.

Come on the hoops can't wait to beat the huns twice next month.

Don't have a link to it yet, but it was very Larssonesque - Henke would have been proud of it.

I have never seen a player who can play the ball from between his own feet, with either the power, or the finesse, that SP can.

Agree 100% with gweedorebhoy, if we lose Stan, the tatties could be through the bree!

Wasn't a great game, and my mood wasn't helped by waldorf and stadtler on Sultana TV. What a joke they are.

One incident saw a killie player go down after a tackle "This could be serious" said broon. "He's just got up, Jock", said halflife!! It couldn't be scripted!

Main thing is 3 points in the bag.

    Hail! Hail!

    Curly
