Press Conference report – Celtic look for their most important victory of the season so far

Having passed up the chance to close the gap at the top of the league last week, the pressure remains on Celtic as they travel away to Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Kilmarnock have done well against the bottom half of the league this season, but have lost heavily to Hearts, Rangers and Hibernian. Celtic have also performed as well against the teams at the bottom of the league, but remarkably have only won once against a team in the top half of the league – and that was the narrowest of victories over Hibs a few days after they played a European game.

We travel to Kilmarnock as close to full strength as we are likely to get. Gordon Strachan confirmed that John Kennedy’s knee injury was a not-unexpected secondary reaction to his cruciate injury and was not a matter for serious concern.

John Hartson has been putting in extra training sessions this week doing upper body work – so much so he pulled a back muscle and missed training this morning, though will train tomorrow.

When asked about Du Wei Strachan added “He is looking more like a Celtic player every day”. I do not expect to see him until injury of suspension breaks up the Balde/McManus partnership.

There were no indications as to whether Maloney would be getting a start.

When Craig Beattie was asked about Strachan’s management style he said “The manager is very hands on. It does not matter who you are, he will point out what you are doing right and wrong”. Perhaps an indication of the direct management style we have heard about.

If we are being honest, a victory is far from assured on Sunday.

If you consider our indifferent results against the top half of the league, and how difficult it is to win on the road - Rangers have failed to win during their last five away games and Hearts in their last three - beating Kilmarnock would be our most important victory of the season so far.

Agree entirely Paul, I don't like Kilmarnock trips at the best of times.

A victory would be a massive boost in my eyes.

Good to hear about John Kennedy.

For a number of years now, playing the second cousins of William away has been a true test of our mettle.
I am sure that if we play to our full potential, we will run Killie ragged.
However we will need intelligent players to unlock Kille when they use 10 men behind the ball.
With Nakamura, Maloney, Petrov and Lennon deep - I'm sure we'll be good.

    Alfred Nobel,

From the previous thread - is that the sponsorless hoops available for collection now? I've had mine on order since the beginning of May and the 7th of November was the last I'd heard they'd be ready.

You can get the new black kit sponsorless as well now - no 6 month wait though.

But I was expecting to see a picture of BBJ on the site....Ohhh you said memories!..

    Coat in hand.....

Good to hear from the press conference Paul although it seems our wee admiral...(is an admiral higher ranking than a little general?)is saying less and less to the press every week...

I think we will go with Sutton and Beattie again...with Naka and Maloney both playing- lennon and stan in the middle...with BBJ left to think about more training for another week...

At the back I'm hoping Agathe gets the nod this week...(I doubt voicing his opinion in public did him any favours mind you)....ON the Agathe front I notice that both times he has come on he has been used as a winger....IMO I think thats a waste of his talent......the guys born to play as a wing back...

    Come on the hoops...

...from previous thread. Well done TBE.

    more memories...

‘Appearing’ in the BBC Scotland Centenary Year documentary – the cameras were at a home match against Dundee United and I'm seen clearly standing relatively impassive (as usual) in the Jungle while all around is mayhem...walking along the Gallowgate among thousands of fhans towards Celtic Park for the clincher against Dundee and meeting someone I knew who asked…where are you going, Chris?…the number of times we won in the final minutes of a game that year...the last seconds of the Scottish cup final.

...the centenary Scottish cup final transformed by a brilliant Provan freekick and a McGarvey diving header...joyous!

...Partizan Belgrade match that inspired James MacMillan to compose “The Berserking”. Exactly.

...taking a spurs fan to see Celtic for the first time in infamous match at home against Rapid Vienna. By the end of the match he'd been brought up with green and white blood from birth. another convert.

..1989 Scottish cup final and before the match the massed celtic fans are short-sleeved or shirtless on the terracing as the sun belts down from the sky - it was roastin’...someone from behind fires a verbal volley at the tfod hordes – look at that shower o’er there shiverin’ in their winter coats and hats and scarves wi’ greetin’ faces and chatterin’ teeth-!

...first old firm match 1980 Scottish cup final was a journey from joy to fear and disgust; despair as drunk 'celtic supporters' rain bottles down on their own support from the back of the terracing as tfod thugs charge across the pitch to assault the celebrating youngsters spilled onto the park as the trophy is lifted; fear at being trapped on a train back to Ayrshire with hundreds of tfod thugs baying for blood; disgust as a tfod thug in his 30s jumps off the train at Paisley Gilmour Street to viciously thump a young boy for wearing the hoops. It was the last time I wore a Celtic scarf to a game. I still have that scarf. I didn’t go to another Celtic tfod match for 5 or 6 years.

...first ever Celtic match at age 5 or 6 in ’67 or ’68 when my uncle lifted me and my brother over the turnstiles at an evening match against maybe St Johnstone or some other team in blue and the sheer thrill as we emerged into bright dazzling floodlit light and the wall of noise hits from the Jungle across the park. overwhelming.

I would like to see Agathe in the team also however I would be reluctant to 'mess' about to much.

How pleasing that people are asking for Maloney to be playing and that Beattie is now (almost) 1st choice in the absence of the Pole without the bowl!

Kilmarnock are rubbish. This is the team that spent £20k on their transfer budget this season which included buying players from junior teams.

If we cannot beat a team with those credentials we are in a bad state.

What is the story with Adam Virgo? That's three months we have given him to get fit. Is he really rubbish ...as the rumours I am hearing suggest?

With regards Du Wei, I would not be surprised if he does not play for Celtic, and is shifted out in January. I hope I am wrong.

Sounds like big John has been told to work harder to regain his place in the team. With several players chomping at the bit to get into the first team squad will keep those already there on their toes.

Could only get to see bits of the reserves game, du wei, agathe pearson, mcgeady, virgo, lawson all looked comfortable and ready to push for a place this can only be good for us.

Thank goodness you published something fresh; the previous thread was taking so long to open on my screen that I eventually gave up.
Good to hear that Du Wei is nearer to the first team as he is an impressive player. Interesting, too, to see Michael McGlinchey and Michael Gardyne starting for the Reserves, with Simon Ferry coming on as a sub. I get the feeling Strachan won't be scared to promote these lads if he feels they're ready.
He has his sights set on a VERY bright future for Celtic fans. Unfortunately, it seems Hartson, Thompson, Varga and Agathe may all belong to our past. We've seen the best of them and January may well be the time to move them on.
Strachan's vision for Celtic is being compromised by his unwillingness to totally snub certain members of O'Neill's old guard. He needs to show courage and daring.
The sight of Hartson and Thompson warming the bench at the start of Sunday's match will be a sure sign that he is starting to fully grasp the nettle.
I've expounded my views on this subject, Celtic's Youthful Future, at greater length on my ain wee blog:

Traditionally Rugby Park is a difficult place to go to and as Paul alluded to, we haven't exactly been winning crunch games with ease. I'm confident we will do it with a bit of style for some reason.

I'm not sure that Strachan is picking the team based on reputation. I think he selects the team based on his thoughts. I think the decision to play Thomson was the 'plan' not his reputation.

Totally agree JohnBhoy, once WGS overcomes the fear of dropping the old guard, who from what MON said are pretty strong personalities in the dressing room, we'll surely benefit. Maloney must start on Sunday, as must Beattie. Did anyone watch Sutton warming up on Saturday? I've never seen anyone be so openly half hearted in all my life - Regi Blinker put more effort into his tackles than Sutton did in the warm up behind the goals! I thought he did okay in the game, but I'd maybe start with BBJ and Beattie this time, with Maloney in for Thommo and Agathe in for Telfer.

Personally I'm hoping for another one of those hilarious interviews with Jovial Jim Jeffries where he claims Celtic's fourth goal was offside and that was the turning point of the match.

Apart from Alex McLeish he is surely the manager we all love to see greetin' on the TV after his side get beat.

Oh and a great effort TBE, you are to be roundly applauded for that great piece of work. Paul, when TBE is happy with his greatest memories blog can you put a link to it under the Celtic Links section on this site?

    Paul,

as you say we have only won once against the top half of the league but then again we have only lost once at aplace where we could lose no matter how good we were/are

again you mention how tough it is on the road these days but then again we did beat hibs who are in top half of the league

as most have pointed out rugby park is a stiff test but always has been

so what i'm saying (again i know) is the stats mean nowt at this time of the season. have a wee look at xmas but reserve judgement till may.

Agree Paul - after last week I thought 'its only Kilmarnock..' now I am not so sure. Its a long time since we played them when they have been winning.

Maloney for Tommo and I totally agree with Hartson for Sutton - ball sticking to Hartson better at the moment. Rest as they were last week. 2-0 .

I wonder how it will be before we accept that winning just the majority (rather than all) of our games and drawing some is going to have to do - and will still be well good enough to win the league.

    Hello Bhoys & Ghirls, TFIF.

    Supreme work TBE.
I have been away for a week and have just been catching up all the postings. It's great to see a bit of dewy-eyed harmony among the Hoopies as opposed to the loose women type bitchfest that has been seemingly occuring this week!
    Put the claws away Ghirlies!

Without wishing to appear over confident, I ain't in the sloghtest bit worried about the killiesillybillies game on Sunday. We had a similar test earlier in the season when we went to Easter Road. We passed that test without too much bother from the metrosexual moptop brigade(We would have passed with flying colours but for some poor finishing-which, Livi game apart, is a problem which still dogs us).

Wee Shaun must start. I know that it will probably be a real physical ding-dong on Sunday(when is it anything else at rugby baw park) and WGS may be tempted to throw Thommo in again, but we are far more fluid without him in all honesty so lets not get dragged into an SPL slugfest-lets give them a true footballing lesson and make jum jeffries even more glum than usual.

3 points in the bag on Sunday, then we begin to think about exacting the most brutal revenge on big tel's motherwell side who, needless to say, have caused us tremendous heartache in recent times.

    Hail hail.

Utterly delighted that Kennedy has only suffered a slight setback and that his career ain't over. When(not if) he comes back WGS will be spoilt for choice-JK, Bobo, Mick and Scooby(who I am looking forward to seeing making his debut hopefully soon). Any 2 from 4.

I know it sounds cocky but I'm genuinely not that concerned with Rangers at the minute, they dont deserve it.

Maloney MUST start, if I had heard myself saying that last year I'd kick my own ar*e, no disrespect to Shaun but no one could forsee the impact he'd have this seaso (except his mentor Lubo maybe). 4-1 to the Hoops.

Thanks to everyone, it is YOUR posts afterall!
(Whitedoghunch- the man with the plan)

Special thanks to Paul67, I was worried you thought I was trying to steal your thunder. As I knew you were planning a 'Celtic Memories' thread of your own but it took off from nothing the other night with great success and I thought it would be a shame to lose those posts.

Does anyone know what happened to Gavin Rae for Rangers?

Although there is a good chance of it being physical game on Sunday I think Maloney actually puts himself about more than Thompson (going by the performances agaisnt Hertz anyway). In fact, coming on as a sub, Maloney puts himself about more than just about anyone on the park. Sometimes you need a wee skillful player to win loads of freekicks against physical sides and cause problems with players gaining yellow cards... what's the point in being big and strong if you can't risk a challenge? That's why I hated it even more When Dougal booked Hartson for nothing against the Huns - it effectively took him out the game.

  • At 21/10/05 16:25, Blogger thismancraig said…

I think Rae is currently filed under 'what was I thinking' by McLeish!

They will always concern me, gives me shivers just thinking about them there! However, it is more important to catch Hearts, do that and we'll be ahead of them!

I'd have happily watched idiots like that getting arrested.

On a lighter note, I like this defence against singing sectarian songs :
"If 20,000 people are singing the Billy-Boys, why arrest three of them? Why not arrest all of them?"
So 20,000 people sing sectarian songs at Ibrox? A Rangers fan is saying this? Somebody tell David Murray!

MON played with wingers and big strikers (and a wee Swede who could rise like a salmon). That was his philosophy, simple football, down the wings, get it across. (Forget the high-ball fiasco in the last season).

Agathe (you'll be surprised at the number of assists), Thompson (you won't be surprised), as the main suppliers with McNamara another major supplier and a few more along the way.

WGS doesn't, he relies on the creativity along the deck with two 'supply' men. Maloney and Naka are the two on-form. If they are not on form then we'll struggle as the supply from the back up plan (wing backs) has not been great.

I hope the supply men are on form on Saturday, without them we will struggle to create chances, as seen last weekend when one of the two supply men was poor, in fact both were in truth but such is the relationship that if one is poor the other will also be by default.

The pressure unfortunately is on wee Maloney because he is getting no relief from Thompson at the moment.

Am I rambling? It makes sense in my head.

Know just the thing to cheer your Dad up.

Book the three Celtic strippers as a wee surprise.

They are in huge demand and they definately give value for money.

They are all different shapes and sizes, and some of them even add on transfers.

Their fees are reasonable and you might still be able to get them at short notice.

Oh aye, their names Agathe, Marshall and, Hartson!

good stuff - like the picture on your profile - all I did was follow Stevie21's cryptic instructions

Paul67/Steve21/TBE great to see this site and associated links moving onto ever higher levels of responsiveness

Hopefully it will be good for the team to have a concentrated series of league games over the next week - at least we know we have a strong squad to fall back on - unlike some of our rivals - it seems to me that if Prso were to get injured it could become a straight East-West 2 horse race very quickly

Quiz question - what is the largest lead that has been overhauled in the SPL and its predecessors?

I see in The Scotsman that Rangers have scored anotable double in C.L.They top the charts with most frees conceded a whopping 75 and 9 ahead of second place Lille.Dado Prso heads the individual list with 15 fouls. To alleviate my paronia would somebody confirm that they occupy a equally lofty perch in the SPL and have not failed to achive this standard due to biased refrees refusing to reward their best efforts

    Sundays match:

Don't think WGS will tamper much with the team.

BBJ will again start on the bench, and it's possible Maloney will as well.

What we need is a full 90 minutes off the type of form showed in the first half hour V Hibs.

Personally i hope WGS has a brainstorm and plays three at the back. Not much bothered which three but i feel this is the sort off game for five across the middle and, one of the wide men being Agathe.

A lot of my funniest memories were of happenings going too or retuning from a game.

Hope someone starts a blog on these because some off them were classics as i'm sure others will testify with their own!

Jon G - Strachan's vision is to have Agathe and Telfer competing for a place at right back. Similarly, on the left side he wants to bring in another full back to challenge Camara. Telfer was also bought for his versatility. He can do a job on the left and might well replace Camara if the stakes are high. Mind you, I don't know who is the safer bet.

I am glad to see that Celtic will be looking to add to the midfield in January. Stachan knows the game better than anyone and will seek to bring in an athletic central midfielder. Ultimately the plan will be for his player to replace Lennon and partner Stan the new captain.

These additions will make us a more complete team and success on the field will dictate how much quality we can add in the summer. But you can be gauranteed that the scouting will be extensive and that Stachan's options will be clear a few months before the season finishes.

    Following on from you:

First game (I can remember) - Scottish Cup Final 1974

First Cup Final - see above

    First away game
    1977 Ayr Utd 2 Celtic 4

    First Old Firm game
    1979 Celtic 1 Rangers 0
    (Frank McGarvey)

    First European tie
    1979 Celtic 4 Partizan Tirana 1

    First Away European tie
    1984 Ghent 1 Celtic 0

    First European Final
    2003 Seville

In response to your quiz. If Celtic had won these games they would've won the league? But they didn't and the strange sequence of Celtic winning none of the 9 in a row championships at celtic Park was created.

    Truetim:

You have summed WGS methodology very well.

I have to say i have been harping on for some time now about the need to dominate the midfield area ,and by doing so you take loads off pressure off all other areas off the park.

You are also correct when you talk of WGSs understanding of the need for strength in depth in this area, and like you i look forward with anticipation to seeing who he brings in in January for this key area.

I've got to add however that no matter who else he delivers i hope we get young Wilson from Dundee Utd. He is the best full back prospect i have seen for some considerable time.

First game Celtic Vs East Fife March '54. Celtic won 4-1, but my memory is one of John Higgins scoring twice while I stood down the front in the pouring rain in complete awe of my surroundings.
Second game was even more memorable. St. Patrick's Day, 1954 afternoon midweek game at Broomfield and we walked to Airdrie to attend.
Remember when we had 3 days holiday for St. Patrick's and St. Joseph's holidays of obligation?
We won 6-0 at Broomfield and Hail Glorious St. Patrick was ringing out in the sunshine.
Now where did I leave that zimmer?

Guys (or the older seniles like myself)

Does anyone remember the reserve games from the late 60's and early 70's?

My Granda used to take me to the reserve games at CP to "learn my trade" as it were.

The games were played mainly on a Friday night and the only part of the stadium opened was the main stand.

For me it felt like being really well off being able to sit in the stand. We were like most supporters a bit poor to say the least and could only afford to go to the Terracing during the main games.

However the reserve matches could be watched in comfort and it was there that I seen my first sight of players like Danny McGrain, George Connelly and Kenny Dalglish.

They were heroes of mine long before they got to the first team as they were my first and regular taste of "paradise"

You really got the poor end of a bad deal. (What part of CP did you usually go to?)

The guy at our part of the Celtic End at CP used to offer more than one product (these were the early days of product differentiation and marketing diversity)

For him it was "Get yer maccarooooooon bars and Wrigleys chewing guuuuuum"

I see greetin face jeffries complementing our playing style under WGS, that probably means they`ll try and out muscle us, tough tackling time. Speaking of which did anybody notice the article in the scotsman. The huns are the dirtiest team in the champions league. 75 fouls so far in three games by far the worst.

Was it mentioned in the Record or Sun ?
