Strachan can point to a remarkable turnaround with victory against Hearts

I have watched Gordon Strachan closely this season; his body language has softened remarkably during the last month. In the early weeks of the season he appeared to be walking on eggshells, unsure of the damage another break would wreck.

After we lost at Ibrox I feared our season was in danger of imploding. Our football resembled the dark, pre-Belamy days of last season, and the two red cards from that day suggested difficult weeks ahead.

Since then we have played six and won six; and, at last are playing attractive, confident football. Our manager is looking a lot more relaxed as a result.

Beating Hearts would not mark the acid test of ‘new-Celtic’, that will have to wait a few weeks more, but it would confirm that a remarkable – and some would say unlikely looking - turnaround had occurred.

If we go top of the league tomorrow, we will be there ahead of schedule by my own calculations. The defence has still to see the benefit of Virgo, Du Wei and Agathe. While I am sure Zurawski would play tomorrow if he was fit, I have no idea who would partner him if everyone was available. Beattie was given the honour last time out, though with more midfield players available Sutton might come into the reckoning up front.

Celtic played their best football this year during the enforced absence of Thompson and Lennon, though I suspect that has more to do with the maturing relationship between Nakamura Shunsuke and Shaun Maloney.

Hearts are a different proposition than Inverness or Livingston. They have pace and strength in midfield and will not be so compliant, which is likely to ensure the return of Neil Lennon. Shaun Maloney is playing the best football of his career and knowing what we do about how the manager runs his dressing room, I cannot see Shaun dropping to the bench.

We are playing Hearts at the right time; they are short of several first team players and will be missing their talisman goalkeeper. As such, a draw would be an excellent result for the visitors and a defeat would not be the end of the world. Coming from two goals down away from home with ten men against Falkirk proves the mettle of this team. They will not be destroyed by losing to Celtic.

While Gordon Strachan will be 100% focussed on delivering a victory, a Celtic reversal would not be the end of our word either. The rebuilding process will go on right through to August next year, during this time Celtic will continue to get better.

We can expect one or two more bumps along the road to what I am sure will be a league championship in May.

    cheers Paul
the main reason for posting first - anyone know where I can watch the game in London tomorrow??

agree with everything you say about progress - isn't it good to have productive options for so many positions?

The Boruc thing seems quite clear - if the London teams are prepared to pay big money, he'll go there - so would I. I don't think the club have done anything wrong here (remember Kharine).
    best to all

Paul67, I can only applogise for the following off the trail post. It is my post from near the end of the previous thread. But I feel strongly about this and that it needs to be addressed.

    9.44pm Neilyboy7

I've yet to come by a post that has angered me as much as yours last night! Are you serious?!!!?

Why is this necessary? This will be Lenny's first match back from his ban, it is necessary to show OUR CAPTAIN that we support him when the rest of the country are cursing the fact that he's playing again!!

If its to show loyalty to Neil Lennon, why not any other celtic player? Because fortunately for them no other Celtic player has to put up with what Neil does on and off the pitch!! Death threats, assaults, constant abuse at every ground he plays!!! Need I go on??

Ask yourself this.. why give money to charity? why not give money to everyone? Because those who need it deserve it more! The same can be said of our support!!!

why the need for the tricolore? firstly, as someone said earlier the tricolore is the French flag! If you’re going to ask a question at least make it meaningful!!

Without being presumptuous, I take it you mean the tricolour? And you go on to say "my view on why not; is that he technically is not of that country" (this is the part that annoyed me most!) who are you to say where he is from? I'm from Belfast, does that make me "technically" not Irish? I hold an Irish passport and am an Irish citizen and take huge offence to your remarks! We, here in Ulster have to listen to sh*te like that every day of our lives without people like you, who obviously have no idea what your talking about, chipping in with comments so you can hear the sound of your own voice!

will it not alienate some non Irish cfc fans? I would think not, as you say, "....cfc is a Scottish/Irish club etc etc.." therefore why should it? we flew Swedish flags when Henrik was still here, according to you that would have alienated non-Swedish CFC fans... give it a rest!

will there ever be a saltire with say Jimmy Johnstone in the middle I would hope so and I would fully support a Celtic legend being honoured in this way, just as much as I'l support a Celtic player (who has had to put up with more sh*t than you can imagine) being supported in this way!!

Neilyboy I'm open to debate on any of the above. BTW You could at least have the common courtesy to address Scottish, Irish and Jimmy Johnstone with capital letters.

Again I aplogise for the above.
On the subject of the thread, I hope Strachan has the spuds to award the team spots on merit and not reputation, I'm an admirer of Thompson but no-one in the team merits being dropped to accomodate him. MON had a habit of doing this and it didn't work. So stick to your guns Gordon and put out the best possible side.

    TBE.

don'tbrackbattinanger, nothing is mentioned on the offical site or the BBC website, but heard it on Clyde. Praying it's nt true, but I'm guessing it probably is.

I'm thinking that tomorrow is totally dependent on team selection. For us to win, WGS is going to have to make some big personalities very angry. I agree that Lennon should be brought back in, but at the expense of Sutton (though he could be used up front with Beattie). I totally agree about Maloney - he can't be dropped in current form. If Thommo is brought in for him, it'd be a huge mistake as far as I'm concerned. The same goes for Nakamura. I'm not too confident at present - the loss of Magic has dented my confidence a bit. I was really looking forward to him running at Pressley - he was mingin last Saturday for Scotland against a guy with pace. He'll battle all day against a Hartson or Sutton. I have a nasty feeling it'll be a draw. Can't wait though - hoping for a big atmosphere. 60,000 fans really could be an extra man, and we may need that!

Dontbrattback, the press conference was yesterday. I suspect that GS knew the Kennedy situation when he used the phrases he did and was giving the player time to speak to doctors/family.

Neilybhoy, tin hat on – and don’t take it off for a while.

The Bald Ego, don’t sit on the fence, tell us what you really think.

It is incredible, but true, that a sense of trepidation must accompany an expression of national identity by some in Scotland. I hope Neil has easier times ahead than he has had in the past.

    Team:

    McManus
    Balde
    Telfer
    Thompson
    Lennon
    Petrov
Nakamura Shunsuke or Shunsuke Nakamura (little dig Paul :))
    Sutton
    Hartson

Not my preferred pairing up front (please don't anyone use the up-top phrase!) but I can't see Strachan benching Hartson when Maciej is injured although he would be sticking to his principles by playing one big guy with one of the youngsters - Beattie/Maloney.

Still enought to beat Hearts and see us back where we belong.

I won't be at the game but to those who will be, enjoy it and make it a day to remember!

I think whatever front two we play will have the edge on Pressley and the thug Webster.

I can't recall Pressley ever having a good game against us so for me it is either Hartson (point to prove) or Sutton (point to prove up front) alongside Beatts.

Dissapointed that there is no Zurawski...strange that a month ago he was a dud now the press are talking up his absence.

On another note, does anyone know what happened to arturboruc.com - doesn't seem to exist anymore?

I'm really upbeat about our chances tomorrow but Zurawski's absence is a massive blow, no question. I think it was clear judging by the Livi game that he is our undisputed first choice striker now. Indeed, I was looking forward to a Zurawski - Sutton partnership which I think would be the most effective. Not to be for a wee while it seems.
Hearts are a different proposition to anything we have came across this year. They remind me of ourselves when MON first arrived at the club with the empahsis on strength and power. For this reason, proper respect must be afforded.
However, as we found out when it came to the crunch, a big team will always come undone by a pacy passing side (Villareal, Porto spring to mind). I believe we are on the way to becoming such a side, with Maloney and Nakamura, under the guise of WGS, changing our footballing approach entirely.
Lennon will return as we need that steel in the middle of the pitch to break up the moves of Skacel and Hartley. Whether Thompson returns is another thing. WGS must be tempted to pitch him in given the physical battle that will ensue. I would be willing to entertain this but not if it is at the expense of Maloney.
Lennon's return results in Sutton's ousting from the midfield. But, as many have indicated elsewhere, he must not be dropped to the bench. Play him up front where he is at his best.
The defence has picked itself for tomorrow. They have performed well recently, even if I still think Agathe's absence is a scandal.

Tomorrow I expect Celtic to line-up:

    Boruc
    Telfer Balde McManus Camara
    Nakamura Lennon Petrov Thompson
    Sutton Maloney

SUBS: Marshall, Hartson, Beattie, Virgo, Pearson, Agathe

As Paul 67 stated earlier, this is the acid-test. Make some noise bhoys...

maloney & beattie on the bench for me. bringing them on with 25 mins to go with their pace has been a feature of our play this year. Teams can't handle us upping the pace in the latter stages of the game. If we start with them & we're getting no joy - it means we're limited with the options to change it.

It is appropriate that Jinky came up in the nationality discussion. Wasn't he the best winger in the world in an era where wingers were the prized cavaliers of football? Isn't he the only living person to be honoured by the production of a Faberge egg? Yes to both.

Was he a first choice pick for his country? er...no. Why was that now, I wonder?

I have too much time on my hands today.

The last time Gordon Strachan looked calm, relaxed and stress free before a big game was in Bratislavia, not a good sign taking all things into consideration. Regardless of whether we beat Hearts tomorrow we can not consider ourselves potential Champions until we've beaten Rangers in the league, preferably at Ibrox. Anything else will be a false dawn as they are the benchmark being the current champions. And yes we may have played some beautiful football without Neil Lennon but consider the opposition. He has to play from the start tomorrow as does John Hartson, assuming he has his head right. This will be a real battle, a yardstick even in terms of the progress we have made since Fir Park. Bring it on, as they say

sorry if this has already been discussed, but its a new one on me. a friend sent me this link about an article that appeared in the daily mirror this week. looks like the mint has finally lost his marbles!!

Rangers chairman David Murray last night launched a fresh attack on his critics in the media.

It is the second time in a few months that Murray has confronted what he sees as unfair scrutiny of the Ibrox club and team manager Alex McLeish.

In his previous statement in August,he complained of "unfair criticism"of the club-although he refused to name any specific targets, simply ending his statement on the Rangers website with "they know who they are".

The catalyst for Murrays latest outburst appears to be flak aimed at manager Alex McLeish, whose team currently languish nine points from the top of the SPL,after 9 games.

The Ibrox cheif claims he has received "over a thousand" letters from fans angered by some of the criticism of McLeish and the club in general.

Murray said "You will always have some people unhappy with what Alex does, what I do,and what our commercial director Martin Bain does".

"But Alex gets the best out of what he's got and the vast majority of fans are totally behind the manager. And thats good enough for me".

"In a period of time since coming back as chairman,I've had over a thousand letters and emails complaining about the attention received from certain sections of the media".

"I was careful with my words and when I made the first statement,I said if you are unhappy with a particular publication don't buy it.

"Knowing that the people, who I hadn't named, would stick their head above the parapet and over the next week it was like a game waiting for them to come over the hedge.

"It was a bit like I'm Spartacus and they were all quick to put their hand up,go on radio stations and do articles to justify their existence.

"There are certain journalists who have an agenda in my opinion, and in many supporters opinion not always to the best interest of Rangers F.C.

"so instead of giving them the pleasure of a badge of honour and mention who they are,it has been wonderful to watch them trying to justify their actions.

"It is easy for people, when you dont have contracts and dont wish to work with clubs,to be critical.

"There are comment journalists who live by looking at websites and opening a dictionary to try and use phrases to be smart.

"To me if you play badly and Alex made the point after we played Falkirk we deserve to be criticised.

"But there are people who are cowards and they hide behind the masthead of their newspaper.

    "We don't want favouritism.We don't want support.We just want even-handedness".

a couple of lines had me smirking:

"There are certain journalists who have an agenda in my opinion, and in many supporters opinion not always to the best interest of Rangers F.C."

just what are these "best interests"? - is he fed up of certain journalists no longer toadying to his club, and finally after years of shameful silence questioning the fact that the pugnant stench of sectarianism can still be smelt at this rotting "institution"

"To me if you play badly and Alex made the point after we played Falkirk we deserve to be criticised."

was that when he gave his dinified 14 seconds press conference? cant say i remember hearing him say that.

on matters celtic - zurawskis injury has given WGS one less headache on the team selection front. i have no doubt that WGS will make brave decisions, i dont think reputations count as much with him as with Martin, and i think BBJ would not have played tomorrow had zura been fit - now i think he will play.

team i think WGS will select

    Boruc
    telfer, bobo, mick, mo
    naka,lenny,stan,shaun
    sutty,bbj

    team I would pick

    Boruc
    agathe,bobo,mick,mo
    naka,lenny,stan,shaun
    beats,sutty

nothing against telfer- he's been a steady eddie in every game since motherwell, i just think agathe gives us more going forward

On one of Paul's previous threads, "Strachan faces key decision on which first team players to drop" I posted that the upcoming international matches could make up his mind for him. Unfortunately for us that has proved to be the case with Zurawski.

I think he will be a big loss tomorrow although I stil think we'll win. I would never want to think Celtic would deny a player the chance to represent his country but surely a top of the table clash takes precedence over a meaningless international?

Anyhoo on to tomorrow. We are going to definitely need the 12th man. So Bhoys & Ghirls is that last pint really necessary tomorrow? Get there 20 minutes earlier than usual and raise the roof and have an extra pint afterwards to celebrate going back to the top of the league.

John Kennedy is to return to Colorado after damaging his left knee in training, Gordon Strachan has confirmed.

The news comes as a massive blow to the popular big defender, who pulled out of a scheduled press conference yesterday to inform his family, fearing that they might otherwise hear or read of his relapse through the media.

Today, however, and with news of this setback now public knowledge, Strachan insisted that Kennedy – who was today walking comfortably, in considerably better spirits – will prove himself equal to this latest test of character.

He said: “At the time, we thought it had been just a knock but it looks like he’ll have to go back to Colorado just to make sure. He’s not back to where he was, though.

“We’d just thought he’d taken a kick but John said that it had been more of a twist than a kick. Now he’s going to be tested again.

“I spoke yesterday about him being tested and it’s testing the club and the players as well because for 20 minutes after the injury training went very flat because he’s held in such esteem. It’s a relapse, but he’s not finished, not by any manner or means.

“It’s a shame because John thought he was away and, after he’s played in that tight, tight game on Monday, you’d have thought that if he could play in that, he could play in anything. So we’re hopeful that it’s not as serious as John thought it might be yesterday afternoon.”

Some of you's on here have short memories. were we not shouting for sutty and bbj never to be played upfront together again all last year.

All shouting for Thommo to be dropped and now the majority on here want him to wander straight back into the team at the expense of Celtic best player thsi season?

If that is our front pairing tomorrow i fear the worse the team and strachan's future.

Just to return to the previous blog (with apologies to those who are fed up with this topic).
The people at Sky are not stupid and they must be concerned from the noises emanating from the EU regarding any future TV deal. With this in mind, is it possible for Sky to approach the EPL, before the current deal is due to expire, and extend the deal-rather like a player extending his contract? They could do this in an attempt to pre-empt any possible EU action.
Good luck to the Hoops tomorrow. Lets get behind the manager and team, no matter what the result is. C'MON THE HOOPS!!!

Jack, what a stunning piece of prose from DM. He has a point about the media agenda, they want to make money out of them as well, but these comments betray a specific mental state.

Have you ever seen a man in decline? Watch his judgement go, watch him lose composure?

Martybhoy, Strachan was not commenting on Kennedy’s fitness, more his character.

Plato, Sky and the league could do this, but the league clubs would incur at 10% of turnover fine from the EU.

It wouldn't be my choice as I'd have Sutton up front instead of Hartson (at the moment) but this is what I's expect.

says on tic website that bobo let slip that lenny and thommo have both been assured of starting places for tomorrow. i know bit we have lost magic but thommo is not a replacement. if lenny starts too then who do we drop? if bbj is to come back then someone else has to go to the bench. It might just be maloney and sutton up front!!

Much discussion about the front two pairing for tomorrows game but we are in the eviable position that you can make an argument for any pairing from the 4 available strikers.
BBJ- Not everyones favourite but who would be suprised if he done the business tomorrow.

    Sutton- Will upset any defence.

Beattie- Pace and strength and goals.

Maloney -Direct pacy and has guile.

Gordon Strachan was very clever starting Maloney and Beattie in the last game against Livi. It softens the blow if he decides to bench them in tomorrows game.

Sutton and BBJ for me to soften them up and the impact play of both Maloney and Beattie later in the game.

Tomorrow is all about the result. Pretty football is preferred but not necessary. The important thing is that Celtic take their chances. Hearts will probably try to get at our full backs and look to win the tackles all over the pitch so we have to be strong. However, I`m sure we are all confident of victory.

Hope Bobo's comments about a starting place for Thomson are not true. Wouldn't want to leave anyone out of our midfield at the moment as they have done nothing wrong and a re working as a solid unit.

Bringing someone else in for a big match - even with his experience - might just tip the balance in Hearts favour.

Hope this is a misquote and it is

    naka
    lennon
    petrov
    maloney

    in the midfield.

I am trying not to think of the front pairing at the moment as I really like both Sutton and Hartson individually but not as a pairing. One of them with Beattie would suit me fine.

My pre-match nerves are already building!!!!!

There was a thread a while back seeking the true definition of pronounciation either Seltic or Keltic. For those who may still be interested I cam across the following reasoning

It is from the greek Keltoi that Celt is derived. Since no soft c exists in greek, Celt and Celtic and all permutations should be pronounced with a hard k sound.

It is interesting to note that when the British Empire was distinguishing itself as better and seperate from the rest of humanity, it was decided that British Latin should have different pronunciation from other spoken Latin. Therefore, one of these distinguishing pronunciational differences was to make many of the previously hard k sounds move to a soft s sound, hence the Glasgow and Boston Celtics. It is the view of many today that this soft c pronunciation should be reserved for sports teams since there is obviously nothing to link them with the original noble savegery and furor associated with the Celts.

Wee comment on the earlier ‘ways to break the broadcast rules’ conversation. I have been tipped off by a guy at our national broadcaster to intervene here. The broadcasters are entitled to damages if UK residents can gain access to games via a club broadcast that should only be available in a foreign country. I understand that the broadcasters check fan sites in the web to see if their rights are being contravened.

Best to avoid this conversation in future I think.

Giggsy14 you can't be dreading it surely?

It is Alan Thomson that is playing tomorrow isn't it. The way people are reacting you'd think it was Stevie Thomson.

On a more sensible front maybe it will be Naka that makes way as there is the usual debate about how tired he is after travelling the world again

Giggsy my friend nice to see you have deleted your post, remember think before you act.

Makes me think that since Thommo is back ,whether rightly our wrongly, Naka is not fit and Sutton has been moved up front with Beats.

Slightly agree though a midfield 4 of sutton, petrov lenny and Thommo is not my cup of tea.

    Not enough imagination or movement.

Could be a few reasons for this move i just hope Strachan comes out smelling of roses if he has changed it not thru necessity

Firstly may I use your site to pass on my best wishes to young Mr Kennedy, it's always sad when a young player suffers a career threatening injury.
Pabloo :- My prediction is a fairly easy win by two or three over D.U, though they do have seem to become a bit of a jinx recently.
HanoiBhoy :- If you don't mind a bit of levity perhaps the answer is covered in the discussion from around midnight at the end of the last thread.

Agree with the lord, there is more to this than meets the eye. Could it be that we need more dig? Could it be Naka has still got the burd flu?

Could it be that Shaun is upfront with BBJ?

All I hope is that the changes have been made for the good of the team not just for the fact that the returning players are experienced.

No longer dreading it bhoys sorry for that shout, canny believe I said I was dreading going to see the hoops.

Like all Celtic supporters, I got a very sinking feeling when I read the news aout young Kennedy on teletext. Reading here, it doesn't seem to be as bad as first thought. Here's hoping.

As for tomorrow, I can't understand how anyone would want to have Lennon, Thompson, Hartson and Sutton all starting. As it's Hearts, I think we will need to start with Lennon (not that I'm a great fan these days) and Sutton partnering Beattie, because Zurawski's out (I just hope he isn't too badly missed). The only way I would even consider Thompson is if Nakamura is too tired after his travelling. As for Hartson, he could be the last throw of the dice with 10 minutes to go if we need a goal.

Apart from Magic We have a full squad for tomorrows Game, I think its great that we have trouble picking the squad and to be honest i think it will be a tight game but i think you cant really go wrong with the midfield. Petrov and sutton give abit more creativity but we need lennon for abit more cover. Its funny the two top goal scores this season are Hartson and Beattie yet the front pairing I want to see Is magic and Sutton. Im not sure Strachan is of the same mind.

Lets try and settle this in my mind Zurawski and Sutton are both clever forwards with a sense for goal and both are similar in there movement. If you start with them then you get the choice of 2 completely different forward to choose from the bench, Pace of Beattie or Power of Hartson both have shown they can score coming of the bench.

Who is your partnership and Why
    Settle it Celt Quick newsers!!!

what i was alluding to is, why do the two (eire flag and pic of neil lennon)have to be linked together so vociferously in such a public display of 'solidarity' i would refer you to my post before your reply last night (12.33 am to U2) for an explaination for my reasons.

dont underestimate my knowledge of political/social situations. i know exactly what you are talking about in ulster.

furthermore i have had to put up with a lot of racist abuse from protestants and catholics alike in scotland, england and ireland for my ethnicity so to retort to your jibe 'support a Celtic player (who has had to put up with more sh*t than you can imagine' To an extent i do know what he goes through.

i respect your opinion as much as any other CFC fan but i feel let down by you with the comment about using capital letters. i will type fast and save time as i please! getting annoyed at not capitilising countries, players etc on a blog......come on thats a bit OTT. why didn't you comment about a fellow poster saying, 'maloney and beattie' or spelling camara 'kamara'. how disrespectful we all are. :-)

    Numero Dos said:

He informed me, that the Celtic Medical Staff are of the opinion that The President's set-back it related to the RENEWED USE of a Muscle the he was FAVORING, during the Recovery Period of his former HORRENDOUS INJURY.

He went on to say, that the Medical Team, were almost EXPECTING something like what has occurred.

This type of Set-Back, is not unknown after the resumption of normal everyday living.

He is returning to Denver(?) strictly as a Precaution.

Then a new EXERCISING REGIME will be freshly implemented, to take care of the Muscle Weakness, due to the FAVORING... as already mentioned.

I think that the setback will be minor, from the above Intel.

For one of the few times in my life I won't be disappointed if Celtic take the points, cant quite bring myself to shout for you though :) That way it's a straight six point gap and although only a quarter of the way through means the league is still in our on hands, a situation I always find more comfortable than having to rely on others taking points for you, and I do see the irony in hoping Celtic will do just that.

A bit of humour from WGS re: Zico -Naka
Strachan joked he was no closer to catching up with Japan coach Zico over the possibility of withdrawing midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura from the friendly against Ivory Coast next month than he was against the ex-Brazil international 23 years ago.

He laughed: "I didn't get near him in the 1982 World Cup and I've not had much better luck in 2005."

Humour is a great way to defuse media hyping of non-issues.

WGS is a clever man. Sometimes it is smart to play the fool.
