Competition for places will spark Celtic against Dunfermline

When thoughts turned to tomorrows match against Dunfermline, complacency was the only real danger I could think of, but then I thought; how many players in this Celtic team are in their comfort zone?

The defence has been unchanged for seventeen games, but I really doubt any of them are sure of their long term place.

Shunsuke Nakamura is, of course, our first choice midfield player, but everything we know about this player suggests that complacency is not a word in his emerging English lexicon.

Neil Lennon looks like he cannot wait for the next game to come; it could be argued he is in the best form of his Celtic career right now, and Stillian is playing like a man who is in contract negotiations at the moment.

Hartson, Maloney and McGeady will not be sure of their place once Zurawski, Beattie and Sutton return from injury.

We were poor when we visited Dunfermline earlier in the season. The smart, ‘table tennis’ football that we are becoming used to was not evident.

This did not affect the result, however, as an incredibly poor Dunfermline displayed their relegation credentials. They are one of only three teams who have not taken points from Rangers.

I expect nothing less than our thirteenth victory from fourteen games, a run of form reminiscent of that great run of victories two years ago – though that run was not from a team still gelling.

We are watching a very fine Celtic team in the making.

Hearts will not be sure of taking three points from Motherwell; tomorrow will be a big test for Graham Rix. They have only won three of their last seven games, and have seen a five point lead turn into a two point deficit.

With Celtic so unrelenting, our rivals have no room for a bad patch.

Hibernian versus Rangers on Sunday promises to be pure sport for Celtic fans. If Rangers win or draw, so what? They effectively reduce our league competitors to just one. If Hibs get the result, the comedy/drama that is Rangers Football Club stumbles on for one more episode.

I am looking forward to my football these days.

Like Paul I really look forward to these games now. It's the style we are seeing that is so enjoyable.
We have a habit of hitting the Pars for 5 at CPm so hopefully we will see a few goals. What will not be in evidence is an open game from Dunfermline.

Does this mean that Maloney is in contention for tomorrow, I haven't noticed any injury update on this, I hope he is

pjbhoynyc Dunfermline will surely be stuffed like turkeys come Saturday afternoon. Dallas just missed an easy field goal and are tied at 21 with 6 minutes left in the 4th Q.

Does anyone think we will see a few youngsters getting on to the bench tomorrow? We need to see if the likes of Lawson, Wallace, Virgo, Du Wei etc are the real thing or not. Thirty minutes against Dunfermline is an ideal opportunity, providing the game is won.

    Paul,
I'll be happy to get the points and no new injuries. Dunfermline will be not unlike rangers - but they will demonstrate more spirit, I am sure.

It's often difficult for the players to lift their game after OF games.

I am wondering about Du Wei. Strachan was talking about competition at the back the other day. He said that Bobo and Mick could not relax with Virgo and Varga (yes, VARGA!) breathing down their necks. No mention of Du Wei.

IF we are cruising by half time tomorrow then we may well see Du Wei in action for the first time (for the first team). With Balde away in January it would make sense to give the guy a run in the first team. I for one reckon he will slot in without any problem.

If we are to embark on an Asian tour next year, Du Wei will have to be involved soon.
One of the key reasons he was brought to Paradise (like Naka) was for markating potential.
I cannot see any profesional player being content at not playing. Even more so considering he is the other side of the world from his homeland, friends and family. Yes he will have to be there on merit, and from what I have seen and heard; he is a special talent. I know Bobo and Mick are doing great for us, but at least give the guy a run out for 10 minutes. It need not be at CH, why not RB?
All I am saying on this, is that the guy needs encouragement. After coming coming around the world for us, it would be good to see big Scooby.
Hopefully he really isn't behind Varga and Virgo in the pecking order.

Stan would be the first name on my team sheet. Hopefully we can resign him very soon. When he is in the middle and motoring - we motor. A true midfield power-house, with his best years ahead...need I say more.

If we play the passing, flowing game that we have been - I cannot see how Dunfermline can compete or compare.

Good to see Lenny's statement that he is buying shares in the Tic.

I personally do not care to see NFL scores, or any other sport or team unrelated to Celtic on CQN. CELTIC Quick News.

Top of the league and here to stay!

There are some people reading and writing on here, not only just tonight but for as long as I can remember whose abilities and obsevations leave me in awe of my own crassness!

I can never dream of comparing my own thoughts with your observations on Celtic and football.

But what I can do is for one brief moment, one small galaxy, and one small eternity in the universe of pointlessness, recall an oasis of brilliance that all of us should cherish for as long as we breath.

    I have called it:

To the man who could thread a needle with his feet
(or how the f*** did he do that)

The nearest I have ever physically come to Jimmy Johnstone was, for every home match, standing in the ‘Jungle’ just to the right of the halfway line, and about twenty terracing steps back from the low grey stone wall which separated us from that fiery headed green and white clad magician.

This was however much closer than the opposition ever got to him.

Everyone knows at least by word of mouth about Jimmy’s slightness of stature but abundance of heart. Everyone knows about his extraordinary skills, artfulness, resourcefulness, and reputation. But what no one has really said is that Jinky would have made a world class fisherman.

Like an expert angler, Jimmy would regularly bait, hook, reel, land, and then throw us back in to be teased again, almost as much as he ever did to the opposition. But we loved it because he was doing it for us, because he was one of us, and he represented us on those hallowed sods of Celtic Park.

“Gie it tae Jimmy” the Jungle would call and with a thousand moves orchestrated as one, the man of a million moments of blinding extravagance and brilliance would instantaneously have the ball under control, spun to face the oppositions goal, and be jinking across the half-way line, going left then right, then back, then forwards, leaving a trail of exhausted opponents, their tongues covered in grass burns as the vainly tried to work out why the Newton’s natural laws of motion did not seem to apply to the wee man.

As he instantly hypnotised both the opposing fullback, and us, and transmitted by ESP the message that he was going down the outside, the defenders muscles made that imperceptible, involuntary and sadly (for him) irreversible commitment to covering the route that Jinky had somehow convinced him he was going.

Imperceptible to most of us that is, but like the thrashing of a distressed fish to a shark, the wee man picked up both the heat of fear and the consequential disturbance in the air pattern. In an instant, he had whipped the ball eight inches in the air, pulled it with his right instep inside and over the vain and forlorn swish of the opponent’s right-foot which had continued on its own trajectory. This resulted in three things happening with uncanny regularity.

Firstly Jimmy immediately and seamlessly, transferred the responsibility for the continued advance and control of the ball to his left peg, and defied the laws of body mechanics to go inside and home in on the goal at the Celtic End of Paradise.

Secondly, the defender seemed to be heading off to buy a pint of milk and three pounds of potatoes.

And thirdly, everyone in the ground pissed themselves laughing at him!

The centre-half seeing the thrust of the red-haired whiz-bang, made to push forward from the safety of the defensive numbers to cut-off JJ’s path (or more usually to cut off his legs usually somewhere up around Jimmy’s neck). The full back, recovering as quickly as was possible when your legs were as dignified as a couple of twisted pipe-cleaners, but desperate to rid himself of the memory of urine soaked ridicule, rushed to support his advancing comrade in arms by forming that impenetrable pincer of muscle, tackity boots, liniment, brute force and destructive football ignorance!

In they both came; one from forward slightly left, and one from backwards to the right. Nostrils flaring, eyes popping, veins, throbbing, evil was in their mind and harm was their intent.

Shoulders dipping, waist and hips shimmying, eyes on the ball and its two yard circumference, Jimmy took the move to that point where no-one could draw out and everyone could see what was going to happen.

We all had a premonition of the pain that Jinky was going to feel!

In instinctive harmony we closed our eyes and drew a sharp breath as the three torsos, six arms, six legs, and one ball, fuelled by the unsophisticated assault and battery of the not-so-beautiful game’s answer to the nuclear threat – 1960’s Scottish defenders - were subjected to the cataclysmic amalgam of ‘immovable objects’ and ‘unstoppable forces’.

Except, when we opened our eyes, there was Jimmy, still with the ball. Somehow he had not only whipped it back with the outside of his left foot in the opposite direction - in defiance of his muscles and bone structure and dragged it away from his potential assailants, but he had also managed to manoeuvre himself down the outside right channel where we had all thought he was originally going,….. then decided he wasn’t and ………then finally decided he was after all. (In fact we only really knew where he was going once he got there, although even then I was never completely sure that he was where he appeared to be.)

‘Now’, with absolutely no apologies to Paul Daniels, ‘ that is magic’.

And there he was now on the bye-line, all on his own. He was ready to chip it, drive it, float it, or possibly come up with a new variation of a cross for Stevie Chalmers, or Bertie Auld, or Wullie Wallace or Joe McBride. As the other members of the unstoppable green machine flooded the box to finish the move, Jinky caught them all out too by changing his mind and going back, finding another couple of overconfident gullible victims and take them through another of the infinite variations on the ‘you’ll-end-up-sitting-on-your-arse’ routines..

I can still see the cast of famous but failed assailants pushing and shoving each other, trying to get to their feet, almost arguing over whose leg was whose as they unravelled the spaghetti of the aftermath of their unsuccessful mugging.

But funniest of all was there embarrassed search around the grass for the dignity that they seemed to lose so suddenly, predictably, and justifiably.

Jinky was if nothing else, scrupulously fair in his treatment of defenders. They all copped it in equally contemptuous measures!!

In an ever resounding echo of the Celtic Song (They come from Bonnie Scotland, they come from County Cork ….) they came from Madrid, from Prague, from St Etienne, from Nantes, from Buenos Aires, from England, and on a humiliatingly regular basis, from the south side of this dear green place. And the great thing is that most left eventually with a smile on their faces, and ALL left with a memory of a footballer extraordinaire!

And as for that ‘lost dignity’, well feeling magnanimous as he usually did after games Jimmy would probably return it to them in the dressing room, or more likely in whatever bar they ended up in that night. For one other thing about Jimmy was that he lived his life the way he played his football, and let’s be honest, would we have wanted it any other way.

    James Johnstone……….Thank you!

I agree that we do need to give these guys the opportunity to show what they can do in the first team. And anyone needs at least 30 minutes to get into a game and have a decent chance to strut their stuff. But with the current consistency in the team we don't really want to be upsetting things too much with wholesale changes.

It might therefore be an idea to promote these guys to the starting line-up if they show particularly well when used as a sub. But no more than one at a time, unless injuries dictate otherwise. We need to maintain stability at the same time.

If we're 3 goals up and cruising a game with 20 minutes to go, then throw a couple of them on. Or if we end up 15 points clear at the top of the league come March, then put out some experimental line-ups (remember, a virtual reserve side beat Falkirk 8-1 in the League Cup).

But let's make sure things are pretty secure before we start taking risks. Failure to win the SPL and qualify for next season's CL is NOT an option.

There will be one definite difference between Dunfermline and Rankers, I'm sure. Dunfermline will sit out most of the game with all 11 men behind the ball, with little interest in getting forward and being creative. Remember, Rankers had more shots on goal than we did last week. I'm pretty confident that Dunfermline will not. But they may not be quite so profligate as Rankers.

From what I've heard, Maloney is not fit for Saturday. It'll be BBJ and McGeady up front as our only 2 fit strikers. Probably one of the youngsters on the bench (maybe Quinn or Gardyne for a run out?). Anyone heard about Sutton or Magic? Both must be nearly ready by now surely?

Found this on the Sky Sports News website. It seems our esteemed friend Stuart Dougal has chucked in the towel as Lenny was only given a fair ban, rather than one which would set a precedent for all other offences (carried out by celtic players!)

Stuart Dougal has tendered his resignation from the Scottish Senior Referees' Association after being 'let down' by his colleagues following a fiery Old Firm match in August.

Dougal was left angry after the association handed Celtic's Neil Lennon just a three-game ban following the midfielder's outburst at the referee after their defeat at Ibrox.

The experienced referee believes that he has not been given enough protection over the incident and is concerned that the decision is not in the interests of the game.

"I have tendered my resignation to the council and it will be considered on Monday or Tuesday of next week," he announced.

"I feel passionate about refereeing and the direction we are going in and I'm concerned about the whole issue of protection for our members.

"It's something I've had to consider for some time now and it hasn't resolved itself the way it had hoped it might.

"I have strong principles and I can become quite emotional in my feelings on the protection of referees and the issues involved.

"This is not about me, it's about the young guys coming through who need some sort of protection."

The Dougall resignation has been massively low key has it not? Perhaps it's another grand gesture from the man and it eventually won't be accepted?

What exactly is the protection that he felt he didn't get from Lennon? Protection from verbals, since there was no physical contact or threat.

This from the man who is happy to tell footballers to F*** Off routinely during a game.

Let's hope McVicar doesn't attempt to change his mind. Dallas and Dougall are two great examples of the Prima Donna who actually believe that they are a major part of games and their eventual outcome.

It's the kind of ego-led officialdom we can well do without. The task of the MIB is to be anonymous as much as possible in any game and to apply the rules fairly and honestly.

Give me Rowbottom anytime. A man who may make more mistakes in a game, but who tries to get it right and stay out of the picture.

To Mr Dougall I can only say:

    Cheerio, Cheerio, Cheerio

    You will not be missed

The game will be better without your over-inflated ego

Will you (please) no come back again........at any time!

I've still got a strong suspicion that Du Wei's future is tied to Balde's.
That might partly explain all the talk at the start of his contract about "not being SPL ready till January" - a wee bit of expectation management for the fans.
I would guess that his transfer fee and terms of return might be tied to some first team appearance clause - and that Celtic do not want to trigger this clause until we are sure we can offload Balde?

Anyway, I would guess that if Balde stays, Du Wei goes in January - and vice versa.

Couldn't agree more, defending a 1 nil deficit at home for over 60 minutes was a disgrace, not that we weren't equally as bad for our performance at Fir Park, but at least we had nerves as an excuse, what was theirs. I remember sitting in a bar in Tenerife watching Celtic v Barcelona in the Champions league last year, a big crowd from Edinburgh were in, most of them Hibs fans. The roof just about came off when Barcelona took the lead, big backslaps and pints all round, oh how they laughed when Henrik scored. I wouldn't exactly be gutted if Rangers thump them on Sunday

bigchipsuk, true - although I believe the first half was OK it was only in the second that they both shut up shop. Hibs did what they had to do in order to get into Europe - all we needed to do was beat Motherwell.

There's another possible plan. WGS (a well known hibee) could loan them some of our reserve players from january so that they can guarantee second in the league and with Hearts third...!

Paulo, great to back in that dear green place that is CQN.

Good post but need to content a couple of points:

Naka first choice midfielder? Surely that title still has to go to Stan. Naka's match-winning movement/passing/crossing does indeed put him right up there but without Stan and Lenny's industry Nakasan would struggle to provide.

Dunfermline game. I've only managed to get back for four games this year and East End park was one of them. I think you are being hard as the second half show was extremely promising and I think the first real display of our flowing attacking football and GS's 'vision'. Some of the play was a joy to behold.

I am really looking forward to the game tomorrow - what a different world we are living in these days! We had around a 80 hoops in our Celtic club in rome last saturday including Charlie Burchill! (Finnegan pub - via Leonina - don't miss it on a trip to the Eternal city! Apologies for blatant plug!) Dunfermline really are in trouble and I agree with some of the other posters who would like to see the likes of Du Wei, Lawson etc getting 10/15 mins or so once result is beyond doubt. Also...bring back Didi! Sorry Paul (Telfer), you have indeed done well but the thought of what Didi could bring to the right wing is frightening.

    Paul,

I would be cautious about suggesting that this is a very good Celtic team in the making.

We are the best team in an otherwise very poor league. Probably the worst standard of football this league has ever seen.

A good test will be next season when we play CL football. The good point is that we have 8 months to gell before then.

Never truer has the saying 'Big Fish in small pond' been true for us this season. The only question is how small is our pond?

    Morning All,

Just time to post the following email received this am. Must get back to work.

Last night as I lay sleeping
I died or so it seemed
    Then I went to heaven
    But only in my dream
Up there St Peter met me
    Standing at the pearly gates
He said "I must check your record
    Please stand here and wait"
He turned and said "your record
    Is covered with terrible flaws
On earth I see you rallied
    For losing every cause
I see that you drank alcohol
And smoked and used drugs too
    Fact is, you've done everything
A good person should never do

We can't have people like you up here
Your life was full of sin"
Then he read the last of my record
Took my hand and said "come in"

He led me to the big boss and said
"Take him in and treat him well
He used to support the Glasgow Rangers,
He has done his time in hell"

Get a grip, too much negativity man.

    SPL = Best since 97/98.
At least three teams have moved forward, one has moved back.
LC OF game = Very well received down south in comparison with the EPL tripe currently on offer.

CL = Worst ever, that is the line you should be pushing.
Fourth in the "worst ever" SPL and still in contention for the CL Last 16.
    Some mistake surely.

If we get into the CL next year I think a lot of teams would want to give us a miss, WGS has got the "Big Mo" behind him at the moment and we should be closer to the finished article next season. All we need is a properly resourced "Growth Strategy" and we should cause some damage.

    Well here's hoping.

    Morning all,
It's been great coming on here recently and hearing (in the main) such positive comments about the 'Tic.
I'm not as cocky about tomorrows game though. I'm sure we'll get the result we want, but I think it'll be a different test for our side. I'm looking forward to seeing how we can make space and create chances against a side that will inevitably sit back and put most of their players behind the ball. It's a great chance for our creative players to show how they can open up a packed defence. I feel we're better equipped to do that this season than last, but let's wait and see.....
Didn't know about Dougall's resignation. Is there no end to his conceited attemps at crass publicity? Away you go Stuey, get tae feck.

is this rangers'worst run of results since 1907?

    gale 8 to storm 10 decreasing 5 or 6,becoming variable 3

    later in northwest.

Got my prospectus for the share issue in the post yesterday. As with everyone else, not the ideal time to be "investing" for romantic reasons, however a wee tip for anyone getting some grief off the wife.

She asked me what the computershare letter to me was about (she gets correspondance from them for her sharesave at work) and i said it was to buy Celtic shares. She gave me a "look" and my retort was, its not for me its for our son (1 year old), her repsonse, "thats a lovely christmas present, nice thought.

Worked well for me, flavour of the month and Im probably chucking away money.

    Celtic Cross,

He played for Aston Villa (although not the first team), Celtic and Man Utd.

It is guaranteed that it is going to be someone who played in a testimonial or in the youth squad of a team.

going by past quizzes if such a player existed he would have been named by now, which basically leaves rambo as the one undisputed answer.

so basically in the style of the current rangers team we're getting one out of a possible three, excepting often they get none

would you like to see Celtic v Inter Milan or Barcelona or Chelsea or Arsenal or Bayern Munich ?

What do you think the score would be? Do you think Telfer and Camara would deal with Ronaldinho et all ?

Celtic would get humped in the CL. I am realistic.

If Rangers get thru to the next round, lets see what happens to them. It could destroy their season ultimately. It's the price you pay for earning £10m

Celtic need around 7 additional international class players to compete in the CL. That's never gonnae happen.

Hopefully, our current team will mature enough by next season to compete admirably, but the Euefa Cup would be our best bet for progress.

The non-old-firm supporters tend to hate the old firm equally....superiority complex, media coverage, financial power among the most popular reasons cited...(in the same way most in England hate Chelsea now)

Sheepworryingbhoy...are you saying that Momo sylla should be included as a great footballer ;-)

    On the footy tomorrow:

If Maloney/sutton/zurawski are injured lets hope Rocco Quinn gets a start...a great opportuntiy to motivate him..WGS may go with Virgo and Hartson though...(hopefully not)

Didier is surely on his way out in January so I think we will have to stick with Telfer...Has Smith recovered yet JB?

    Fans & Atmosphere:

On a totally different subject...I notice over on the jungle bhoys site that their planned demo at the OF game was stopped due to corporate madness (IMO)..

They were intending to hang some banners from the top tier for about 5 minutes...The banners were approved as fireproof (in line with stadium guidance) but because they were to cover a celtic website advert they werent allowed to do it..

Is it just me that thinks this is absolutely crazy...Since when did corporate advertising get in the way of fan displays....Can you imagine the stewards at estadio olimpico ruling out the big carling top as it covered an ad...

Will we be told to stop doing a Walk On soon as it obscures the tv angles...

Yes I understand that the club have to protect revenues but come on....

    Any opinions?

MR G if you still want the ticket for tomorrow I sent an e-mail..

    Hi all
I think GS is getting plenty out of those at his disposal and I dont think there is a problem with gelling as has been suggested by some posters.Players will retain their positions until they lose form or someone better joins the club. The young players have so far played very well IMO and have constituted to the long unbeaten run. Some people think TFOD had no appetite over the two recent games, check out the tackles on MC and tell me that is so.They were clinically beaten by a Celtic team who generally takes its chances just as they did to us in the 90's.I dont think injured players should walk back in to the first team when fit and certainly not to play out of position. So IMO either Hartson or Sutton plays not both with whoever is the present incumbent of the other striking role.Dont go for squad rotation, last years capitulation is still too painfull in my mind.

  • At 25/11/05 14:17, Blogger leabgarrow said…

Dessybhoy, I agree with all points bar one. I think squad rotation would have helped us last year, though that said, players still seem sharp this year so squad rotation could be damaging (ok even on that point I only marginally disagree). No European games is also helping with the freshness of the team.
