posted this earlier in the wrong article!

Todays prediction then lads, I previously said it would be 1-4 and I was waiting to see Saturdays results, for some reason I dont feel as confident for goals as I did on Friday!

I'm still confident we'll win but I'm changing my prediction to 0-2 to Celtic, Hartson FGS and Sutton for the other! If it is 1-4, I'll never ever doubt my Oracle skills ever again!!

Predictorship round up will appear shortly after todays game...I'll be surprised if every person in the league doesnt pick up a point at least today!

COME THE HOOPS, HARTSON FOR A HUNNER!!

I was listenin to CQN and all of a sudden I heard them talkin in the background...had it up really loud...the main man was sounding totally distressed and saying 500,000 over and over, and "this is the worst dissaster ever" and "this is the worst thing ever etc etc"

I wonder whats happened, have to listen to the radio now! I enjoy the Celtic minded banter much more!

    Half Time, Falkirk 0 – 2 Celtic

Celtic always looked like they could step the pace up, though they never had a proper attempt at goal until the goal.

Short passing play, similar to what we have seen recently.

  • At 06/11/05 14:54, Blogger FirsbyHoop said…

Two great goals from McGeady and Maloney, cracking cross from Camara for the first.

Hartson getting NOTHING from the officials - dodgy offsides, penalised every time he wins a header.

Falkirk fans reminding me what a bunch of bigots they are.

  • At 06/11/05 14:54, Blogger mncelt said…

    HT Falkirk 0-2 Celtic

Steady and patient football from Celtic all the way through the half. Falkirk disrupting our play by consistently fouling. Two very good finishes. First one was a quickly taken free kick to Camara who delivered a perfect ball for Maloney to finish. Second, Maloney turned provider laying off a good ball to McGeady who finished brilliantly. Falkirk not showing much up front, can't recall a save Boruc has had to make

Boruc - Usual assured self - nothing to do
Telfer - Involved in everything, playing very well
McManus - Has the upper hand this week in Central defence. Winning a lot of balls in the air which is good to see
Balde - Quiet game as McManus is dealing with everything on his own
Camara - Good work for the goal and a steady performance
Naka - Always looks good on the ball. Lost possession a few times
Petrov - Outstanding. Always able to find space and time in crowded areas
Lennon - Typical Lennon - no complaints from here
McGeady - Looks hungry to make a point today. Good contribution and a great goal
Maloney - Not getting great service and having to drop back for possession. Gains confidence with every game he plays
Hartson - Being consistently fouled and then called up by the ref every challenge he wins. Give us the 100 second half big man.

Looked like we were heading for 0-0 with 5 mins to go but 2-0 is a fair reflection of the game. Should get another couple second half.

Great result today. I was especially pleased with the way McGeady stepped in for Maloney, with Shaun going up front and no detrimental effect on the team's performance.

Hearts and Rangers both dropped points there, but we swept them aside easily, minus Zurawski, Sutton and Beattie.

Now for them on Weds. From a psychological point of view, I think we must win by at least two goals, although I'll be happy with just the win.

McGeady did not look like a happy-chappy. It's good that the lad has hunger; let's hope he realises he will have to be patient and he has no devine right to start. (The body language between him and BBJ did not look too friendly either).

Many positives to day, always thought that playing patiently would pay off if a tad frustrating.

    He's Mo, He's Mo
    He's Super Mo Camara

Another excellent game going forward and on several occassions at the back for Mo, improving every game.

What about the team that ended the game?

  • At 06/11/05 16:40, Blogger Parkheadcumsalford said…

    Paul,

Great result today. Normally, I would be very worried if the likes of Sutton, Magic and Beattie were all missing. But might it not be the ideal opportunity on Wednesday to do what Mr. Stein did years ago and played our reserves against them in the Charity Cup. We still won easily, on a bleak Wednesday night. Mind you, the reserves were the Quality Street kids; so, I suppose it wasn't such a gamble. But just think of the psychological damage it would do to them if the likes of Lawson and Du Wei come in and we still hammer them. Oh, it's great to be a Tim, when we're playing the Celtic way.
Thank you Mr. Strachan; and what of the fams chanting Mo Camara's name. Who would have thought that at the beginning of the season?
Euphoria over. Now, I can get back to worrying about Wednesday.

    Celtic were pure quality today-

We are getting better with every game.
    Getting faster and stronger .

Who do we play on wednesday?

I have absolutely no worries whatsoever that we will wipe the floor with rangers on wednesday and a week on Saturday,.

To all those who have spent some time slagging off Mo Camarra and Aiden McGeady...( YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE !) they were the two best players on the pitch today although Steven Mc Manus was also tops.

The tackle by milne on Nakamura was shocking and vicious-he should have walked.

Another great day for The Hoops-congratulations to big John - and another step towards next seasons Champions League Final.

Will rangers get to play in the Bells Challenge Cup if they are-

    fourth in the SPL....?

    Sorry NOEL:

Have to dissagree with you .

The best man on the pitch was STAN PETROV.

Have you noticed the suttle change of role.
He now plays the role Paul Lambert played along with NL and our midfield now looks so much more composed.

So remember the {Stan for captain} campaign!Just thought i'd keep that at the forefront.

I am one of Mo Camaras biggest critics, and nothing i have seen this season so far has changed my oppinion.

However credit where credit is due!

Maloney for the Hearts game. On Wednesday they will kick the living daylights
out of Nakamura, Maloney, Mc Geadie and be allowed to get away with it

So I expect the big Bhoys to be out in force, Thommo, BBJ, Sutton, Petrov, Lennon
    and Maloney

Well done to the Celts today.
    Patient build up play.....DON'T PANIC!

Now i've seen everything, first it was Lennon bombing down the right wing, then it was BBJ, down BOTH wings (aswell as a nutmeg)

But big Bobo galloping down there in the second half really took the biscuit.

Thought McGeady grabbed this opportunity with both hands, despite the constant abuse from the home support.

Apparently it's because he's a tenacious, fiery, red headed, contraversial and hard tackling midfielder that everybody loves to hate.

ps.well done, stevie21, bhoy o bhoy, stephen and CC boxer for all correctly predicting the 3-0 scoreline.

whether mo is a player or not - he has been consistently good in every game he played since the mwell 4-4 game - not brilliant but good

on one or two occasions he has been very good

we have not had a left back like him for ages

i too dont think he is great footballer but he is good and he tries/works call it what you like, like f*ck

give me that combo rather than a slightly better player, cos thats all we could afford, any day of the week - look where it has got wigan so far, tho again i realise that wigan are only a wee bit thro their season.

I wouldn't put the improvements down to one particular thing. I think a number of factors have made us a more difficult team to close down and dispossess.
    Confidence in goalie.
Defence want to play the ball out to a Celtic player, rather than hoof it.
Nakamura controls the ball quickly and easily giving himself time to make the unexpected pass.
    Midfielders hungry for the ball.
Stan is much more involved in the centre, is winning the ball and surging forward to get beyond the strikers.
Full backs willing to surge forward and get involved.
Faster and fitter(?) players all over the park.
Overall we are far less predictable than we have been for a season or two, and therefore more difficult to defend against, even in depth.

    GAVIL GUY:

    One question.

    Are you WGS?

Your reading off the game is spot on.

    How did Mo Camara play?

Seriously,in your post and others today this,we'll dictate the pace type of comment, seems to be prevailant.

This has all the hallmarks of greatness to come.

So many great teams in the past have been able to dictate the pace of the game, lifting it and dropping it at will.

My friends,WGS is setting the right agenda.
    Make no mistake!

  • At 06/11/05 19:34, Blogger 'Gavil Guy said…

I'm not tall enough to be WGS.
Although I'm happy that in this transition season we are all enjoying the successes and the attractive, dominating football, I am concerned about the lack of a Bertie Auld, David Hay, Roy Aitken or Peter Grant type player in midfield who can dig in, when necessary, and mix it intelligently with unscrupulous and dirty opponents.
I fear that may be our undoing Wednesday, especially if Sutton is unable to play.

    Good result today.
Did CS's injury help or hinder us?
Would he have played instead of BBJ or AMcG?
One point was Naka targeted for some rough treatment?
If he was is there a bounty on him sponsored by a WoS "ludge"?

Finally some comments on Kojo and his thoughts on the current state of play rearding the club and wages. Difficult to totally refute his figures as I have no inside source and have to rely on web and paper guesses.

However his figures don't stand up to any level os scrutiny:

    Magic = £2.8mill?
I don't think so, the accounts state that we have spent £5.5mill approx this summer (DW + AB's fees not included) so to have spent this amount would have left little for Naka and the rest.
    My thoughts are as follows:
    Club = £2mill, installments unknown
Player = £200K signing on fee.
Basic Wages = £16K pw if playing, £12K if not.
£9K all in does not stack up, if that was the case the total cost of the team would be £12-15mill.

Consequently I think that "Kojo" is trying to talk SP out the door as part of some BQ inspired economy drive to cover for the "delayed" entry into the EPL.

The basic question is how much is SP worth in basic wages?

Top dollar was HL on £38K pw
    Others have/are receiving £28-30K pw.
NL, current captain is on £24K pw.
Consequently for Kojo to suggest that SP is lucky to get his £16K basic is setting someone up for a fall. SP is now the benchmark for the team, his quality is what we need to be aiming. To suggest that he is too expensive suggests that our horizons are closing in and we are hoping to thrift our way to success.

Two years after Seville and it has come to this.
DD really has got low standards.

Crux of this matter is "Sustainability"?
What should the club's footballing budget be?

    2003/04 = £36-7mill total
    2005/06 = £30mill total: £5mill investment and £25mill wages
    2007/08 = £20mill total?

The problem for this scenario is that it would allow the top half of the SPL to mount a credible challenge on a few old stagers, some gifted youth and 6-8 cheap imports from Eastern Europe. All you need is to offer £6K+ pw, a bit of scouting nous and some good form and you have a real challenge.

We would still have a bigger budget but we would be carrying a huge expectation and a fear of failure, to the rest it would be their season in the sun.
Think Hearts, well maybe not just think Wigan!

Silver lining in all of this would be the SPL getting interesting just as the EPL stagnates.

My Tuppence worth and I reckon that I know as much as Kojo about this.

Neil lennon is not on 24K a week at Celtic. I reckon he is picking up
no more than 15K I would go for around a basic of 12K.

Stan Petrov who is on around 15k a week will get a pay rise in the region
of about 18K a week and that will be the maximum wage at CP for a number
    of years to come.

Thommo, BBj, Sutton are all on 20K a week due to MON dealing with the contracts then
and will be punted when the time is right.

Bobo will be punted sooner rather than later due to hime being so expensive but we will
    make 4million from him.

All this is pure speculation of course. Unless somebody has some footage of players discussing the terms of their deals.

Firstly, congrats to BBJ on reaching the ton. How many of us expected that after a difficult start in 2001 when it seemed he would never score ?

Secondly, an appeal to our good selves the fans. In these modern times, is the quality of support what is expected of the supporters compared to the old days ? The answer, I fear, is no.

I think back to that hallowed night in May '79 when John Doyle (God rest him) was sent off and the roar from our fans nearly deafened me. Be in no doubt, WE won that game for Celtic.

In late '80 Dundee Utd murdered us 3-0 in a 2nd leg semi at Parkhead and the jungle chanted all thay to the final whistle. Few weeks later, Aberdeen are 4-0 up at Pittodrie and Nicholas scores a consolation to the biggest roar of the day coming from Celtic fans who stayed all the way to the bitter end.

And the moral of this story gentle reader is that we regrouped to win the league in an unforgettable cold night at Tannadice in April '81. When Celtic and the fans are 'united' as one we are almost unbeatable. Few clubs have the bond we have in world football.

The good news is things are improving. After Bratislava et al, the fans are coming round to WGS and his new team. So remember, regardless of what happens on Wednesday stick with them and hopefully the bhoys will see us through.

    There endeth the lesson.

There is no way that Celtic are going from circa;30.000to approx 9.000in staff costs in such a short period off trading!

I said yesterday that £16000 plus all of the variables could come out at quite an attractive arrangement.

Especially if promotion to team captain is included.

For a club of our stature to go from one extreme to the other does not make sense.

Therefore, like yourself,i think we are being fed a line here.

CELTIC: Pay what is necessary to bring in the best players available within reasonable parameters and, lets not resort to just making the figures fit the balance sheet!

  • At 06/11/05 20:09, Blogger madmitch said…

    ANNAOAN

    Some more figures!

    NL = £30K pw up until 30th Jun 2005
One yr ext = £20K, re-negotiated to £24K + captaincy after the "Jackie" debacle.

These figures were widely quoted during the summer.

Regarding BBJ, CS, AT: Their wages are closer to £30K pw than £20K. Why else would BB be able to get £28K in Jan 2005?

The one question in all of this regards a players total wages in relation to his basic wage, the 2004/05 "Total Football Costs" can
me to £31mill. That figure cannot be reached by adding up all the basic wages that heve been mentioned in this site over the past 3 months, Leabgarrow did some numb4rs on the "Deadwood", £8mill basic wages and conting for 13 players. The squad isn't that big:

    Big 5
    Shaky 3
    WGS 7
    Promising 5
    Youth

So the total based on the deadwood basics would be a lot less than £31mill. Bonuses are the big unknown.

All of this is informed speculation, how informed? I will leave that up to others.

Madmitch, not sure where you are getting your information from, the spend for this summer will not be included in any published accounts until we get the interims next Feb/Mar.

I think you might be confusing last years accounts, which were released in the summer with this summers transactions.

I also think you are confusing Kojo with DD. Our friend Kojo is highly regarded, but I would not take his comments on Stillian Petrovs’ value as being the words of DD – this is how confusing notions build up about people.

DD is about to invest somewhere between £6m and £10m in Celtic, I was hoping we would see phrases like “DD really has low standards” retired, while the memory of this fact is fresh in everyone’s memory.

Neither of us have the budget info for the next five years, however, we now have the word of the chairman on record saying that every penny of ‘profit’ will be retained and reinvested in the club.

The football spend, therefore, will be dependant on income.

When we have fresh investment from DD and we have a committment from the chairman on dividends, directors wages and profit reinvestments; we do have quite a lot of info which indicates that we are not facing a doomsday scenario.

St Anthony, I am pretty sure that we won the league at Tannadice in 1982, a game I was also at. In 1981 I believe we won the league against St Mirren at CP.

When I was at that game Pope John Paul had just announced his papal visit to Britain the following year and the news had came out that evening that he would recognise Scotland as a seperate country and would kiss the ground when he landed.

I was standing in the jungle right next to a very old fan during the game. The Celtic fans were singing "The Popes coming over, oh well the popes coming ovvvverrr" to the tune of theirs only one da da da da. The crescendo became more deafeaning with each Pettigrew goal. When the third goal went in and the jungle was going absolutely apeshit with this chant the old guy turned round to me and said; "The Popes coming over is he ?", "yes" I replied, "great news that he's going to recognise us a seperate country" I added proudly, "Well" he said "I hope he's a fu(king good player"

and their endeth th lesson for today.

    Hail Hail

I passed the exam btw :-)

I don’t see the point in speculating about individual players’ total compensation. I hope Celtic can now offer packages consisting of basic wages and incentives based on appearances, results and team achievements.
What I do believe is important, is that we employ an overall salary budget, based on a reasonable and manageable percentage of our revenue. A budget, which will not result in financial instability and will still allow us to attract the players necessary to have us enjoy the kind of success in Europe we enjoyed under MON.

Great performance today from Celtic, every player played well. I can see why Falkirk haven't won any home games, I think that their very wide pitch makes it very difficult for them to close opponents down and particularly against a Celtic team who move ball around and always have both full backs up supporting attacks. It was great to see Aiden
McGeady up for it today, his goal demonstrated why "two footed" players are a godsend. Although I am a big fan of Alan Thomson he would not have scored the goal that Aiden got today. We are coming together now as a team and all credit to the players but also to Gordon Strachan. The much criticised defence is looking solid now having had the benefit of
playing together for a long run of games. However let's not be in any doubt that our biggest challenge lies in the next two games. We need to show that we have the physical and mental capacity to win an old firm game. I am hopeful but not over confident. One obsevation from today's game is that despite moving to a new home, the Falkirk support demonstrated that, just like their Brockville
    forefathers, they have the same
deep hostility to the Celtic. I first experienced their hatred for our club way back in the early 60's and today when their fans chanted "f*** off to Ireland" I thought, nothing changes. In all my 45 + years following the Celts home and away I don't think that I have actually ever heard an opposing support make known their views in such a direct manner. It is significant that coming, as it did, on the 118th anniversary of the birth of the Celtic, and following on from the sentiments expressed yesterday at the Brother Walfrid ceremomy that there are still those who deeply resent our football club and all that it stands for. As always the best reponse is to stick the ball in the net!

    Sir Paul,

Thanks a Million, for clearing up my figures regarding Mr. Petrov's Current Emolument.....

I stated very clearly, that I was Guesstimating, what Mr. Petrov's weekly salary was, when I posited my OPINIONATED Speculation,on how the Petrov Negos would transpire

The Figures that I used in my estimation were.. a Possible base......just for the sake of my further reasoning, on what Mr. Petrov should offered.

Nothing in the Interim has surfaced to change my mind.......

I still say that Mr. Petrov will be offered a SMALL increase in his new contract extension.....

Also I remain firmly convinced, that his Advisors will be the one's to insist on a much larger settlement...........

Therefore, The strength of MR.Petrov's resolve to remain at Celtic will be STERNLY TESTED.

The Ball is firmly in the Court of MR. PETROV.......
The Monsieur Pierre that I know.... shall not be forced into an auction ........DUTCH or SILENT....
He Will stand by the Offer, that is in the BEST INTEREST OF CELTIC As he darn well should..... Days of Wine Neuroses are gone.....

The figures that I used for Magic's Emolument, were received from an Unimpeachable Trustworthy Source.....Therefore,I stand by them as quoted, 9,000 Pounds weekly .....Including Bonuses.

    Oh! Almost forgot......

CAMARA has gone from the CELLAR to THE PENTHOUSE....... He was MY PLAYER OF THE MATCH TODAY!

And How do ya Like Them Apples?

"The worst player ever to Play for Celtic"???
    Rubbish and Balderdash!

    I ask ya!

    Hail! Hail!

Well done the boys today. Solid victory the enjoyment of which cannot be spoiled by the negative comments of that eejit Richard Gordon on Sportsound. You really have to wonder about the mindset of a man who, on the day that Celtic go to the TOTL, comes out with gems like - Stilian Petrov with his fat backside, Strachan must regret buying Virgo and, the best one of all, lots of Celtic fans just have no time for John Hartson!

P.S. Big thank you to VinTim for the Media Player 10 advice - it is now working.

Got there in the end with controlled posession, we really are getting the hang of these away fixtures.

Congratulations John Hartson, looking forward to 101 on Wednesday.

Well played also Mo Camara, how many assists is that now from the 'worst player ever to wear the hoops'.

    He was my MOM today.

Stan Petrov today again underlined his importance to the Celtic cause.

We have many players who can when necessary produce that little bit extra.

We have however, one player who can when necessary, produce that little bit of magic.

That is why all parties involved must get around the table and thrash out a deal, good enough for Celtic, and satisfactory for Stan.

Club captains do not grow on trees.

Leadership of the kind he has to offer must not be undervalued.

Figures for the sake of figures must not be in this case the be all and end all.

Must just say a big sorry for super Mo Camara i was one of his biggest critics but today and the last few month he and Stan have been outstanding lets just hope the tabloids can admit they were wrong however i doubt this very much. After a pre season defeat we have a Celtic crest split in two yet when the scum are 12 points behind ourselves and Hearts and 8 points behind Hibs in 3rd it's we can still win the league a bhoycott is in order!

No matter the form this game will be a severe test of our progress to date!

Rangers will be up for it,make no mistake about that.

However, one memory in days gone by has came to mind.

One David White, manager of Rangers went through a full season without losing to Celtic.

Won nothing that season as i remember and got the sack!

Now,i am full of confidence re the next two games, but should we lose one or both,i look forward to still being crowned champions at the seasons end,and WGS taking us on to adventures as yet unplanned!

Not been able to post today until now but I though McManus was absolutely outstanding this afternoon. I may, just may, have to start revising my opinion of the lad.

I know he's not really been tested by great players yet but apart from the obvious skill level (and he seems to be two footed!) he showed confidence and leadership. That latter quality can take otherwise average footballers a long way (just ask Pressley).

As other posters have said it just shows what can happen to players when they get a decent run in the team.

Full marks to young Aiden as well.

I'm also confused about Rix's appointment. I thought Hearts wanted to appoint a big name but Rix only has three letters....

Very pleased with today's reinstatement to our rightful place.
Like veryone else I'm really looking forward to the coming two games - although not yet with the confidence I did when MON had the boys on full pelt. A Ranger's victory at that point was a shock - not so sure it would be if they managed to overcome the bhoys this time - we still have a few question marks??

Any way I guess we should be more concerned with the Edinburgh teams. Hibs are motoring away quietly and I wager they will finish above Hearts. Graheme Rix? Having a laugh surely? He'd be ok for the under 16s...girls team!!

I agree with you about Adam Virgo, Aiden and all the other young lads. We need to be patient with them. They will deliver their promise. Many scoffed at WGS and some players earlier in the season. Those boys have all came good.

Mo Camara had a great game today. IMO He puts in more effort and contributes more than any left back we have had for a while.

Another reason why I'm delighted tonight. I've just secured my ticket for the rangers game in 2 weeks. Glasgow here I come.

A question for any anoraks out there. When was the last time we were 12 points ahead of rangers in November?

    Life in the Colonies
It has been an outstanding week on the eastern seaboard.
Spectacular fall colours of red, brown, rust and yellow. Warm sunshine most days including today with temps hovering around 70 F. 21 C for those following the French measurement system.
Meanwhile back home, dark grey clouds hang over south Glasgow and the HQ of Murray's International Minions despite their recent run of unbeaten games in the SPL.
Now as I sit on my deck watching the crescent moon sparkle in a darkening sky, listening to the chicken sizzle on the barbecue and contemplating the beer in my glass, my thoughts turn to next week.
    Victory on Wednesday night,
Lisbon Lions in New York at the weekend,
    Rangers in meltdown
The appearance of a cracked Rangers crest.

Life in the colonies may have it's compensations, but I'd give my wisdom teeth to be in Glasgow from Wednesday through Friday.

    Hail hail

I've been a follower of CQN since its inception in the heady days of summer last year, what you'd call a "lurker" as I've never posted on the site. It's been interesting and heartening to see the journey from CQN being the voice of one man trying to overcome the media's obvious agenda, to the state of
affairs today where CQN has become the premier football fan forum. I know of no other club that has anything like it, and it's the first and last thing I
    read most days.

Paul67 set the standard when the site first appeared, and many of the contributors over the past year and a bit have followed this lead and helped to maintain these high standards.

CQN was an essential part of my rehabilitation after Black Sunday - I couldn't bear to look at any news web site for a couple of days, and when I eventually summoned up the courage, CQN was first on my list. I'll never
forget how the spontaneous soul-bearing of all contributors provided an essential therapy which helped everyone to get over the event, and remind us
of the pride we have in being Celtic supporters.

When Paul67 was first granted access to a Celtic press conference, I thought that bearing in mind CQN's ethos (to bypass the subversions of Scotland's sporting media), this was a landmark event.

Paul67, with the interview with Brian Quinn, you've raised the bar to a level no-one (except perhaps yourself?) would have thought possible in July 2004.

I cant congratulate you enough on this event, and wish you the best in maintaining (and even surpassing) the exceptionally high standards you've set.

My thoughts on the game today:

Boruc – nothing to do. Excellent concentration, sharp off the goal line to collect through balls.

Camara – MOTM. Willing to run 50 yards repeatedly to give a team-mate an option, and hurried back unfussily when not used. Good passing up the line and great support play for goals 1 and 3. Superb penalty box challenge.

McManus – Close second to Camara for MOTM. Gave the ball away just once, and was faultless otherwise. Great tackling, reading, and covering for Bobo’s…ahem…eccentricities.

Balde – The usual, overall competence but a couple of shaky moments. One or two instances of narcolepsy, which may have been punished were it not for McManus’ alertness.

    Telfer - Solid, dependable, unspectacular.

Nakamura – Quiet. Given some harsh treatment, and unprotectd by the ref. Needs to develop a little more toughness though.

McGeady – Flashes of brilliance, fine goal. Still needs to learn when to release the ball, and also how to cross. If he can get his final ball to do his build up play justice, we’ll have some player.

Lennon – Ubiquitous, supporting the attack more now. Linked very well with Stan throughout the game.

Petrov - Ubiquitous, supporting the defence more now. Linked very well with Lenny throughout the game.

Maloney – Great performance yet again. Becoming indispenable, please Gordon, don’t drop Shaun again.

Hartson – Inconsistent. Got hee-haw from the ref. Great to see him get his century. Working harder these days.

The home support – Thank you for being so thoroughly obnoxious. Your bile led to me celebrating Aiden’s goal with more glee than any goal we’ve scored since we beat TFOD at the Death Star last season. Special thanks to the muppet in the brown parka, whose constant stream of invective and contorted features made an otherwise dull last 20 minutes hugely entertaining!

NeilR – where’ve you been hiding? Hope you’ll be giving us more than a couple of one-liners in the near future, CQN is even better with your contributions.

Apologies for the long post, but since it was my first, I decided I was allowed.

Enjoy the gemme on Wednesday fholks!

    Senor Pablo

Madmitch, you ask how much should Celtic be spending annually. Here's my 2 cents....the answer should be 4 or 5 million LESS than our turnover.

Why? On an ongoing basis, we must at least break even. An annual profit will give us cash for transfer fees, or a more expensive contract for a special player. It really is straight forward. No other scenario is acceptable or sustainable.....they are one and the same.

Kojo.....I honestly believe that Peter Lawell is doing a very good job. But I hope he is smarter than you give him credit for. There should be no maximum individual salary at Celtic. An overall budget, yes. But how the manager wants to spread that around, should be his call.

For example....and I'm just taking figures out of the air, so don't get hung up on them......let's say Petrov is on 16k per week.

Let's say he wants 28k. Let's presume PL can get him down to 25k. A 'limit' of say, 20k will see him walk. That should only happen if the manager thinks it is the best thing for the club, within the overall budget.

If the manager decides to pass on Du Wei, or sell Virgo in order to make the money ....within the budget....available to sign Stan, then that's what we should do.

An appreciation of the big picture will help us progress. Rules for the sake of rules always ends in tears.

Great performance today. My secretary always ask how my weekend was. The whole office is a happier place when I am able to respond ' Celtic won, rangers didn't '

Whether Mr.Petrov stays or goes, will be based entirely on the DECISION of MR.PETROV.

    Kojo,
with respect, there is one error in your summary of my views....'budget busting'.....if you look carefully, you'll see that I was arguing for individual flexibility within the overall budget .

Your other point, re the reactions of other players is well taken. I would suggest that, to the extent that being the top earner is compatible with how Petrov is viewed by his peers, then this doesn't have to be a major problem.

Some have suggested that Balde's salary is a bone of contention among playing staff. I have no info on this, but it would make some kind of sense, given his poor efforts last season.

    Petrov is a different biscuit.

As I said, don't get hung up on the figures I used, they mean nothing in and of themselves. My point is, flexibility, big picture....within the overall budget.

On other comments you have made re Petrov's representatives, I agree. I do worry about Stan's recent comments about being in 'no hurry' to sign a new deal. This is typical agent-speak for letting the current contract get as late in the game as possible.

If PL is going to play hardball on anything, I would hope that it is in insisting that we get a clear response by Christmas.

I'm speculating on lots of (great) possibilities and a few certainties - pre the Hun games, I reckon the final placing in the league will be
    1.Celtic
    2.Hibs
    3.Hearts
    4.Rangers

Strangely, I think Rangers and Hibs are the two who are most likely to trade places. Hearts are an unknown now that the Management seat is empty - They could crash and burn - or keep it going. Similarly with the Huns - a change in management could make or break them (further) - again difficult to tell.

One thing is for certain and that is that this is going to be a great season for the Bhoys!

Hard to add much more to what everyone else has said regarding our performance today.

I personally see a Celtic side gaining in composure with every passing passing game (like it Kojo) that they play. They are now beginning to look at ease with this style and as something of a football purist I am loving it.

Had to laugh at Jock Brown saying we were getting frustrated,as we never stopped passing it and made them chase the ball.

For those worried about getting kicked off the pitch by Rangers on Wednesday,I think today proved that they can deal with it.There were a lot of tackles flying in and no-one disappeared, they just got on with the game.

Finally,a special mention for Mo Camara.I have said to many people that they just don't understand what he offers Celtic in an attacking sense.I thought he was excellent today.

Also,if you look at his two assists,I think it proves something that I was talking about on here at the beginning of the season. The British obsession with crosses. Both of Mo's assists were to team-mates who had made themselves available for a PASS,not a cross. This is something that I think Arsenal do better than anyone.

Maybe some of those criticising his crossing ability should maybe look at the movement of our strikers at times in not giving him an option to pick out.

    Roll on Wednesday.

Thought McGeady was excellent in the first half today, he was more like his old self. Old self? He's only about 12, but you know what I mean. Interesting to see Strachan throwing big Virgo up front for the last 10. Does he see him now as more of a striker due to the fact that we have a solid unit in defence? Du Wei would probably be first in line should there be any losses due to injury/suspension.

Special note about McManus who I think has been superb this season. Its great to see him thunder into 50/50s the way that many players do to us. Lets them know that we will not be kicked around. Keep it up big man.

    Away to bed, goodnight all

I thought the discipline was praise worthy under some heavy tackling from a team who were well beaten in the football stakes.

This is the sort of discipline we need especialy in games against TFOD. If we can maintain that level against Mcliesh`s team, who will try every trick in the book to make it a battle, then we should emerge triumphant.

I noticed Naka actually made a tackle and won it. He did take a nasty whack in the instep hopefully he will be ok for the games ahead.

Macmanus is growing week by week. IMO this has provided WGS with a major headache as he clearly had both Du wei and Virgo earmarked for places in the back four.

Well done Mo camara, super Mo eh who would have thought it.

    2004/05 Accounts on Page 44:
Item 28 Post balance sheet events -
Further capital expenditure on intangible assets of £5.62mill has been committed.

Date of the accounts is from memory the 17th Aug 2005.

Consequently the AB full time deal and the DW loan deal are not included. Payment phasing is also not mentioned but I think at least 67% would be current year.

    ANNAOAN

    Split the squad into chunks:

Big 5 = CS, AT, NL, BBJ + BB = £130-140K pw basic.
Shaky 3 = SV, DA + SP (hopefully not for long) = £45-50K pw basic.
WGS 7 = MC, Magic, AB, PT, Naka, AV, DW = £80-90K pw basic.
    Promising 8:
    MON's last Hurrah = SP
Little and Large = SM + CB
    Find/Rabbit out a hat = SM + RW
    Point to prove = AMcG
In reserve = DM + JFK
Total basic = £60-70K pw? Bit of a guess, value is increasing all the time.
Squad players - Don't know the details.
    U21's / U19's / U17's etc etc.

On top of this we have:
Caoching 1 = WGS, WGS's mate, TB, GK coach
    Coaching 2 = U21's / U19's / Youth
    Medical = Backroom staff

Given the weekly basic wage figures shown above I think that there is a big gap between these figures and the total football wages of £25mill (my estimate for 2005/06). Therefore I believe the figures above are in thge right ballpark and the gap can be explained by the various bonuses
and employer NI, insurance and ancilliary costs.

Comments welcomed if it helps us understand the club.

Consequently the wage bill is on the downward slope as between the Big 5 and the Shaky 3: 5 or 6 will be gone by June 2007. That will reduce the wage bill significantly so any pleading of poverty by the club when dealing with SP will be seen as an economy measure not an economic imperative.

I wouldn't write a blank cheque for SP but a derisory offer suggets that we are more interested in balance sheets than organic growth and progress. The lesson of the "lost" £8mill does not seem to have been learned. We need players like SP to earn the "£8mill" year in year out.

    Finally DW.
Unless he moves over to the darkside and starts praying towards Govan on a daily basis we would be stupid to let him go. We are a bit short on defenders and he, I think, is the real deal. To send him back after all he has been through in the last 2 months would send out the wrong message. It would show that our horizons are low and we are not properly planning for the future.

If Rangers are relegated, McLeish admits match fixing, Murray pulls out all his money and Ibrox is sold to Tescos then we MIGHT see the cracked badge in the gutter press. Until then I wont hold my breath. Its not as if they have lost two pre-season friendlies or anything.

    madmitch @7.43pm,

    Excellent, thought provoking post... again.

I would be a lot more inclined to go with your estimates than Awe_Naw...'s.

I find it extremely hard to believe that BBJ, Sutton and Thommo are on £20k p/w. They recieved pay rises when they extentded their contracts, so to suggest they were on less than that when we signed them from the hyper-inflated Premiership is absurd.

Clearly the axe you have to grind with DD has not and probably will not go away but I'm not sure its all down to him.

Is it not more constructive to ask 'Are Celtic's standard's that low?'

Should we be relying as heavily as we do on one person, who can walk away at any minute, to help us succeed? Should we be so dependant on DD?

In short.... NO we shouldn't but we are and it is unfair to expect him to dig deeper everytime we dont qualify for Europe or meet a similar shortfall.

With SUSTAINABILITY being the word of the week, the fact that we still need DD would suggest that we have not yet reached our optimum plateau of sustainability... yet.

    TBE.

When the media in early Oct. raised the fact that Rangers have difficult games in the month of Nov. I looked at these and agreed - but I also looked at the games Rangers had in Oct. and thought that it would be an easy month giving Rangers a `cushion` for the Nov. games.
I also thought at the time that putting pressure on any manager when he is facing his hardest period i.e. Nov. was unfair, and still do.
However, unquestionably the time to criticise Rangers is now, as failure to win easier games in Oct. is unacceptable. The media should be jumping from a great height on them for abject failure in the SPL.
Certainly broken crest should be seen now as Rangers (not just their manager) have failed to win the `banker’ games, whereas as away games to us Porto and Hibs could go anyway. Rangers have failed big time with their Oct. games and home game against Aberdeen in Nov.
If things go wrong for Rangers at the end of the season then to my mind the month of Oct. not Nov. will be seen as the defining moment.

    TBE,

How do you know that the big 5 got pay rises ?

Was MON that loyal that naieve when he dished out to his stalwarts a massive pay rise when it wasn´t necessary ? I mean who was going to offer them more at that point in time ? Is this why there was BQ´s telephonegate ? Another more searching question for Paul the next time BQ indulges perhaps ? Is Balde´s contract not the only one ?

If so it seems that there is no defined wage policy ? or is has been radically reappraised since the Balde shenanigans ? should we ask Jackie Mac if thats true? Lennon didn´t seem to be in a rush to sign up for 20K a week if you ask me?

Whats more worrying is that PL who helped draw up the Bobo contract is now lumbered with a new policy which will see SP move on if he is expecting anything in the same ball park. Why do you think Agathe has not played yet under WGS? An inflated sense of his own worth against Celtic´s targeted wage policy?

We can´t afford to pay CL or EPL wages, there is room for manouvere as far as SP contract is concerned (i.e we can offer him a pay rise) and we will. We will not offer DA a pay rise. SP´s next contract will if he signs will be the highest wage at CP in two years from now. Unless we dont shift the big 5.

    Only my opinions of course

    Celticbhoy...
there is a long way to go in what will prove to be a very interesting season. I expect the other mob to seriously pick their game up on wednesday. If they can't do it then, they never will.

For what it's worth, their worst period was the summer. Not unlike hertz, their chairman decided who got signed, based on what he thought their 'boumsong value' was.

On top of that, the manager had a player on his books that his chairman told him not to play....talking about Ball.

The fact that the media don't hammer them for these things (as they would do to us)....actually works in our favour. Things over there are allowed to fester. Suddenly it is November and they are wondering what happened to their season.

However, on a sober note (sorry, didn't mean to leave you out, BigJoe..:)....while their season may be over, they will do what they can to undermine ours. We'll need to be at the top of our game this month.

On the subject of central defenders i disagree that we have a surplus. Virgo , Varga , Balde , McManus , Du Wei and maybe few untried youths so we shall settle with 5 centre halfs. On recent performances Sutton should not be earmarked for defense.

As we Know Balde will disappear for a month in january or maybe for good? (who knows with his contract?) So there will be an absense in the defense to be filled. My moneys on Du Wei there With Virgo as back up? Say McManus gets injured? Virgo will step up to the fold as i can see Varga being punted in january. If injuries happen and they will I cant see either Virgo or Du Wei being punted in january. Not unless another centre half is brought in.

Judging by comments from coaching staff and PL I would be most certain Du Wei will be staying on pure ability alone.

I would like to hear other opinions on our Centre-half situation. Please enlighten me guys.
