Mental strength the key for Celtic as Keane interest moves up a gear

My friends; for those of us who suffered the slings and arrows of nine long years, tomorrow is special.

People often write here that we are not defined by Rangers. That is true, but when we played in their shadow for so long, we could not escape the comparison.

I have been saying for at least eight years “They cannot afford it; they are going to crash and burn”. When the financial crash started, they recruited a manager – an unquestionable winner – who snatched two leagues and five cups in a little over three years.

Bhoy will I be glad to see the back of him.

Tomorrow is not about Rangers, however; their fate is already assured. Tomorrow, is about Celtic.

It is about the Celtic support, who will be watched - and listened to – by those who would like to drag out the tired old line: ‘both clubs are as bad as each other’.

Tomorrow we can show this fallacy up for what it is.

It is about the Celtic players, most of whom still have it all to prove in Glasgow.

Most of all it is about Gordon Strachan. He now needs to show the killer instinct that all the great managers have. Great managers see vulnerability and ruthlessly exploit it.

For all Rangers troubles, the result is not assured. Statistically, the time you are most likely to concede a goal is in the minutes after you have scored. The concentration drops and a comfort zone is reached.

In beating Rangers so comprehensively last time out, there is a danger that the Celtic will read too much into their opponent’s condition. Gordon Strachan has not had a chance to drum this out of them this week.

Today he talked about the mental and physical preparation of Shaun Maloney being first class. He will need the same from all his players tomorrow. Being tired after travelling half way around the world, will not wash once the game is underway.

On the small matters going on in Manchester today: knowing only what the media cover of Roy Keane, I share some latent concerns that he would be a destabilising influence at Celtic, and I have not seen enough of him recently to make a judgement. However, those who know football, and watch the English game - and I include our consultant Martin O'Neill in this - are all convinced of his value.

I know Celtic have an interest in signing the player, and expect a deal to be done in due course.

Remember to let them know tomorrow:

You’re Fourth in the SPL
You’re Fourth in the SPL
You’re Fourth in the SPL
You’re Fourth in the SPL

The club have asked me to pass this message on to Celtic Quick News readers:

Peter Lawwell, Celtic Chief Executive:

“It has been well documented that last week’s Old Firm match saw 26 arrests for ‘sectarian’ offences. Two of these arrests were from the Celtic support and I can say categorically that if these people are found guilty then they will be banned indefinitely from attending Celtic’s home and away matches.

“Last week’s pre match demonstration of Celtic’s community activity in fighting against sectarianism and racism was very well received by supporters and the Club will continue to focus on projects such as Celtic Education, Sense over Sectarianism, Show Racism the Red Card and the Old Firm Alliance. The focus will again be on this weekend’s match and we would ask our fans for their continued backing. “

“As with all matches at Celtic Park, Saturday’s game will again be well policed throughout the stadium. The police have again indicated that they will be monitoring any sectarian behaviour very closely and will deal with this issue very seriously. The police will have the full support of Celtic Football Club in dealing with sectarian behaviour should it be identified.”

In your opinion do you think either/both of these will play?

IMO Keano would be a huge and fantastic signing for the club.

    Hi all
I dont think signiing Keane would be good for Celtic.I think he is extremely tempremental, moody and someone I would not go for.Rather than offering him a contract look after who we already have e.g. Stan and get him on a longer deal.I hope this is not a sweetner for Stan to move to Man U, that in my opinion would be completely unacceptable.

How right you are, complacency is our biggest danger. The only team that can stop Celtic from winning is Celtic.

Rangers will raise their game as mid-table strugglers normally do against the league leaders, so we must have the correct attitude.

Don't suppose there's any chance of Paul Lawson breaking into the first team soon then? A great shame, in my opinion.

If Keane were to sign for Celtic could we ever risk him in an Old Firm game? Any Scottish ref would be looking for the tiniest excuse to send him off, and I'm sure Keane would be only to happy to oblige.

Keane's only 34, not 36, but even so, I've no interest in him. I did however notice Man Utd are giving him a testimonial - I guess they'll want us for that. That for me is the only positive - we'll get a glamour tie against Man Utd. I just can't see WGS going for him, when we've got Lenny who is (touch wood!) less injury prone, the same age and willing to play for a lot less money that Keane would. You have to remember Keane is on £80-100k a week at Man U - he'd hardly then accept £20k a week with us.

My first Old Firm of the season...and I can't wait! I'm sure Paul used to have the mantra "sensible heads when all around them are losing theirs". Make no mistake, Rangers will have the bit between their teeth on Saturtday.

Our preparation has been slightly hampered with internationals and I expect the game to be tighter. If Rangers play the thugs such as Malcolm & Rae as I expect them to I think that we should be able to show them up for the journeymen they are.

As said in the article we need to bury them. It may be difficult for WGS to bury his mate, but what better way to endear him to our hearts.

    Go on Celtic, bury them!!

Call me naive if you like, but my problem with Keane is this: every contributor to this blog has dreamed of playing for Celtic, would play for Celtic for nothing. Roy Keane could have lived that dream, on a massive wage, at any time in the past 20 years or so but chose not to. He insulted and demeaned the club he purports to support by saying publicly that he wanted to end his career with us. I've been going to see Celtic for 38 years and would be hugely disappointed if he were to sign.

Roy Keane is a luxury that we can ill afford.

If, as the board continually states, we need to reduce the club wage bill and focus on the long-term growth of Celtic as a club and a PLC, then Roy Keane is the wrong move.

Keane will not come for nothing, and he will want to be with us for more than 6 months. How can we afford to meet his demands and still stay true to our business model?

And what exactly does Roy Keane have to offer? He's a great player, but in his twilight years. He does not play in a position where we urgently require cover, and the current incumbent, Neil Lennon, is on better form. He has spent far too much time out of the game with injuries, and this situation is unlikely to improve. Keane could certainly help to improve our youngsters, but we don't need another Paul Lambert manager-in-training situation. He could make a significant impact on merchanding and brand recognition, but I'm not certain that these benefits would justify his wages.

Let's assume we are able to accomodate Keane and offset his wages against the impact on revenue streams, the message that it sends out to the rest of the team is a bad one. When it comes to negotiating Stan's new contract, how will we be able to tell him that Celtic can no longer afford to pay him, but can happily pay for a an aging luxury player like Keane?

On the subject of complacency, I am struck by how much everyone's attitude has changed in the space of a week or so. Indeed, a good few of us were extremely cautious in the run up to last game.

Now it would appear that much of that caution has disappeared - I have not come across anyone predicting anything less than a 3 nil or 3 - 1 victory.

My point is that, while I still expect the good guys to prevail, lightening rarely strikes the same spot twice and I have to agree with Edward that it is unlikely Rangers will play as badly tomorrow. Everyone (fans included) will need to be on top of their game to gat a result.

On Roy Keane, provided his reasons and attitude are right, I think he'll be a superb addition to the team.

  • At 18/11/05 14:03, Blogger Giz A Huddle said…

About Roy Keane, there are a lot of arguments for and against and at the moment tansbell has it spot on whose place would he take in the team. The way that NL is playing at the moment he cannot be dropped, he could play at centre back but should we drop mcmanus or balde and push de wei and virgo further down the pecking order.

Ok he is a leader (when not slagging off team mates) but so is Stan. I hope that we don't sign him and concentrate on younger players like Lawson, give him 20 minutes here and there in games and see how he progresses.

If we are looking at older players to fill in the DM slot then sign NL for another year.

Bit of a ramble but heyho.

    Prediction for tomorrow

4-0 to the bhoys 2 for BBJ one each for Shaun and Stan.

    Afternoon all...

    Nice topic yet again Paul67

On the whole Roy Keane saga...
Roy Keane and Neil Lennon are both 34. I think Roy would be a good signing as whenever he plays for ManU you can see the influence he still has. Even though hes not a great player anymore hes still a good one.

I dont think Lenny has much plans to play past this year, and even if he did, his fitness at this age couldnt/wouldnt match Roy Keane's. Although Keano seems to be injured quite a lot, hes a good athlete. He openly admits he needs a fresh start to get him back into the swing of things, and im sure when WGS gets him fit the Celtic way, we could minimise those injuries.

Lenny is one of my favourite players, for his dig in attitude, the attitude the real die hard fans would have if they were playing. But make no mistake, Keano still fears oppositions, still drags his team through it when they are up against it(although admittedly, when hes playing!) and has an immense knowledge of the game which is invaluable to our youngsters.

IMHO to not go for Roy Keane in some sort of player/coach capacity would be foolish. Don't hold me to this, but im positive I heard him say its not about the money anymore. So, lets not be disrespectful, 10-15k per week for playing and coaching in my eyes would be reasonable.

  • At 18/11/05 14:07, Blogger Michael__67 said…

While reading the 'Keano posts', and thinking of how injury prone Keane has been of the past couple of seasons, I had a wee thought about the current defensive midfielder. Most players as they move into their mid thirties (Mjallby, Lambert, Sutton) tend to pick up more and more knocks and find it harder to recover. How many games has Neil Lennon missed through injury. Not bloody many. Sorry Roy, im afraid we've already got an influential Irish midfielder...

This was translated from an article entitled "Los neoclasicos" by Enric Bañeres which appeared in La Vanguardia, a Spanish newspaper based in Barcelona.

" A few hours before the Bernabeu opens up its gates to host the great classic of Spanish football, Real Madrid v Barcelona, the venerable stands of Celtic Park will have just become empty, after the other great classic of this weekend, the Old Firm, the match between the two communities who live each to their own, Celtic, the Catholics of Scotland against Rangers, of the Protestants.

(Don´t they write long sentences in Spanish )

Beer and whisky will flow freely in more than a few pubs, all part of a ritual which has been celebrated for over a hundred years. It´s a classic in European football."

In the article the journalist also compares it to an A.C. Milan vs Juventus match.

In the last thread someone referred to an incident with Milan fans where a gun was brandished and it got me reflecting on how our derby has seen fatal deaths, wounds, mindless aggression, hurt and pain. Thankfully that level of violence is not present at Old Firm matches nowadays. Why has it not degenerated, this apex of Scottish/Irish football, while many parts of Scottish and Irish society have been scarred with violence?
When Maurice Johnston jilted Celtic it was a heavy blow to the chin or to the stomach, but Celtic did not keel over, they got on with it. But there was a price to pay for Rangers for that body blow. By openly cheering on the ex-Watford striker it was the beginning of an era where it would cease to matter the religion of the players. The bigots were permanently winded then. Year upon year a new reality deepened. The bigots were now offside and were being told, publicly at least,

    " It´s the football, stupid"

That new era has undoubtedly in the long run benefitted Celtic, because it meant we became more focussed on the football again.

Paul has passed on Celtic's determination to continue outlawing bigotry, we all owe it to those who have suffered in the past.

I don´t need/want/savour a victory over Rangers any more than a victory over Milan / Bayern / Barcelona but this match is so local, so familiar, that it puts hairs on the back of your neck. The result can affect you a lot. The 2-0 home defeat because of big Rab's blunder was just as bad for me as Black Sunday or Artmedia, it took me just as long to get over it. Come to think of it I still haven´t got over it!!

In the world of football nowadays there are more nasty local confrontations than the Glasgow one. Sadly they are playing catch up.

When a game like tomorrow's comes so soon on the back of a recent, wonderful, pleasing, satisfying, footballing triumph it is difficult to get worked up about it again, but come 12:30 tomorrow......

McGeady to get 3 and then do a joogely wilkey like Dixie Deans,

    A diving header from Petrov

One for Sutton and Hartson apiece

Maloney to round the goalkeeper for the 7th

    Marv Andrews consolation goal.

Enjoy the experience those who can go along to Paradise.

    Celtic in Peace.

Lennon was born in June 1971, Keane in Aug 1971 so he's very slightly younger than Lenny.

I think he'd have to be proven as a coach before I offered him money - we could get a better coach (and probably already have better coaches) on less money. If he was a younger player and was less injury prone then any team would be lucky to have him. As a player there's no doubting what he's achieved but there's a cloud over whether he can still cut it.
As a person, he's a 'four letter word'.

I would much rather have Robbie Keane at Parkhead.

    Hi Paul

Living near Manchester, I have seen Roy Keane many times down the years. It cannot be denied he has been a great player for both club, and country. He has had an amazing influence on all around him at Old Trafford.

However, he is now not really capable of playing a hard 90 minutes week in, week out. Despite what people might say about the overall skill level in the EPL, against the SPL, let there be no doubt, the game in Scotland is truly physical. If you can't cope with it, you should be involved. Roy has shown, in the past, he can make (and take) bone crushing tackles. Today though he is injury prone , and there can be no disputing that. If he were to sign on at Celtic, and he was played against Rangers, he would be all pumped up. He would scare the living daylights out of them. But let's imagine he is playing a mid week evening game on a snowy night in January, at say Dundee (with all due respect to Dundee). Will we see the same Roy Keane that we have in previous years? I can't see it. And as he gets older, it would get worse

I am sure that Roy would be a great influence on the younger players - God help them if they aren't seen to give 100% minimum. But the question mark over his relationship with WGS could potentially become a major issue. Roy is not exactly known for his diplomacy.

The other question might be cost. We might get him for next to nought. But what sort of wage packet will he want?

Either way here's hoping for a good win this weekend. The start of this season was disasterous for us. Here we are just a few months later with an opportunity to completely decimate Rangers season, and keep us at the top. Don't want to take things for granted, but another 2-0 win would do just fine.

    Hail Hail

On the sad OB song no chance of it not being sung if Celtic are in front by 2 or more goals. There are elements of TFOD who believe the singing of the Soldiers song to be sectarian , you can`t please all of the folk all of the time.

If you lot of detractors think that you couldn't find for a RK in your line up then you are deluding yourselves, he would be great at CP. If he wants to come then we should accommodate him at least then we will not have some player and his agent holding us to ransom for a deal to be thrashed out. noel 90 : Cheers mate. Thanx for the support.

What can I say about the current team/situation that hasn't already been more eloquently (and in a few instances, locaqiously) said on here?

Well nothing is the answer, because I'm here in Brasil and the PRIME FONT of this info is this very board (yes, it is a deliberate use of Caps. Take a bow Paul67 et al). So I'll leave that up to those who are more in the know than I (and I daresay a good few other exiles who religiously pore thru here). So, as I said previously, I'll waffle a wee bit about the fitba here for everybody's general fitba interest.

Three games to go in the Brasilierão (Premiership) and it's down to a two horse race bewteen Corinthians (São Paulo) and Inter (Rio Grande de Sul).
Corinthians are a doing bit of a Chelski here (backed by an Iranian businessman) but are still pretty inconsistent. Can't see them losing it though.

My adopted mob (Botafogo) got beat last night way up in Belem, Amazonian (think Partick Thistle going to Timbuktu for a Weds night league game). The 'fogo captain (just back after a three game suspension, had a poor game) fair fanned the flames in his post match interview by saying the equivalent of "We wur mince. We played like a bunch of Indians" Left me pondering two things. (1) Berating Indians in Amazonia is not a particulary PC (or clever thing to do). (2) Everybody knows the expression "chiefs and indians" so what was the captain doing amongst this field of "indians"? And the name of this inspirational leader? Why none other than Rafael Schiedt.

Apparently our other failed hoop is playing better at Palmerias. But not much.

Speaking of annoying wee dwarfs (or should that be dwarves?). Romario (remember him?), just played his thousandth professional game last night. Can't remember exactly how many but I think he's now second all time scorer. Still banging them in to (no bad for sonmebody that's 40 this year). If he hadn't been such a conroversial wee character I'd have thought the CBF would've taken him to the WC in the same sort of role as Super Swallae does at Hampden. Time'll tell.

Speakin of WC. The papers here are always aglow about the 'super-quatro' (Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Adriano and Kaka) but now they're actually saying that this "dream team" may be surpassed by a "gangue de cinco" (gang of five). So who are they? Step up, please Messers Ow*n, R**ney, B*ckham, L*mpard and G*rrard. Scary when the Brasilian press start praising "them".

Oh and before I go, the Brasilian FA have issued their refs (well the ones that are left after the latest bung scandal) with a great wee gizmo. It' s a cross between one of those DIY laser measurement tools and a can of spray paint. Whenever a foul happens, the ref sprays a wee spot where the ball is to be placed. Aims his gizmo for 10m (think phasers on stun). Walks up to said point and sprays a line on the ground. É voila no more encroaching at free kicks. Brazzo technology you gotta love it!

There's plenty of rumours doing the rounds that any 2 or3 of Suttie, BBJ, Thommo and Lenny will be off at the end of the year (or season). We'll need some experience to bring the young lads through.

Signing Roy Keane, no way should this be allowed to happen. Even if he was not involved in the Miller incident he has not shown any loyalty toward Celtic. I note he has said on many occassions his affection for the Club but he never did anything tangible to show this, talk as they say is cheap. If he really did have our interests at heart why did he not consider signing for us when he could have featured and starred consistently for us. He is injury prone, hotheaded and not the kind of influence you want in the dressing room. He is not one for the future, a future GS has already outlined and we should make no formal bid for him even though no fee would be payable to MU he would cost us more than his true worth. Hopefully the Board will recognise this and consign any thoughts they have on signing him to the dustbin.

Keane to play for no wage! Now that would show commitment and send a message out about Celtic...

Now on to the serious stuff. Great plater, injury prone and ageing. If he wants to come then fine but for nothing over £20k/wk, also he has no devine right to walk into the team.

I don't think he would have a problem with Strachan, by all means every time he has had a rant about players or managers in the past it has because he has felt them to be unprofessional - not working hard enough or taking training seriously enough etc.

I would sign him on a pay per play or rolling contract. At the start of the season he would be straight in for Lennon but now Lennon has found some form (even added an attacking element to his game) he's have to fight for it.

Watching the reserve games you can see that we still haven't replaced Lamber, Keane could be an ideal replacement if only for a year.

Roy Keane was sacked by Manchester United after being barred from playing for the club's reserves on Thursday evening, according to reports emanating from his home town of Cork after the official announcement of his departure from the club.

United issued a statement on Friday claiming that Keane was leaving by mutual consent.

But reports from the Irish broadcaster RTE gave a different version of events.

According to RTE, Keane told his family on Thursday evening that he had been ordered to report to United's MD with his agent in the morning.

The instruction was reportedly given to Keane after he turned up to play in a reserve-team match and was informed by the coach that he was under instructions not to select him.

Keane's departure has been widely linked to his recent criticism of some of his teammates in an interview with the club's own television station that was never broadcast.

United manager Alex Ferguson was known to be furious at Keane's comments and publicly rebuked his skipper prior to the win over Chelsea on November 6.

With regards to signing Mr. Keane, I would like to remind the vast majority of Celtic fans, i.e. born in Scotland of Irish Catholic ancestry, of the following :-

He let his own country down when they needed him the most. Do you honestly believe that this prima dona would be good for our club?

If he called big Mick "supposedly Irish" then what the hell does he really think of the majority of our fans?

We're trying to bring our over-inflated wage bill under control. What about the disruption it would cause in the dressing-room by paying him even £40K a week?

When it comes to a toss-up between Keane and Lennon, our affinity has always been closer with our brothers and sisters in the north, so I'll stick with the guy who really gets up the bigots' noses.

Buy a season ticket, Roy. There's a seat going next to me in 408!

    Hi Paul,
Another good well thought out article and once again one I find hard to disagree with, it will be interesting to see how a new team handles the pressure of being expected to easily win a high profile game against a team that may be going through a bad spell but who are known to raise themselves at times when playing against you. I have said a few times in posts that this is an untested team who are full of potential, I would suggest that starting from Saturday through the wet miserable months and midweek games till around early Feb will either make this team or not break them but confirm them as a good but not special team.
Supercelt 1.32 :- While I would agree that Mr McLeish has carried an element of luck I don't feel it's luck that wins titles and he did win two.
On the Roy Keane debate, I think that right now it's the wrong time for Celtic to sign him, a young team is being built and starting to gel just now, to bring him in a drop some younger player who has been playing well would send the wrong message out to other youngsters in the club. However and tongue in cheek if a big club were going through a bad time and needed a short term boost of both experience and ability he could be the ideal signing :)

  • At 18/11/05 15:07, Blogger dumbhoy said…

It would be good to avoid the OB song for McLeish tomorrow. He is a man on the way out who, apart from the 132 years of dignity quip and being the luckiest RFC since Andy Gorham, hasn't done much to us.

Murray the Mint should be the target of any slagging. The smug, supremacist should be targetted as this will cause most angst. So lets get up some version for him.

Alternatively, on the park die-hards like Mr Rae are also a good target since it usually helps a wee red emerging.

Give McLeish a break and twist the knife where it belongs. Right into Mint and his lack of team, money, stadium, season books, etc etc.

Keane? If the price is right, which is less than £10k a week.

McGeady did not get a look in for much of the start of the season but has a complex about hairdressers; because of medical reasons has been allowed in the team. Something to do with the disability act I believe.

If Keane was to play for nothing (is this allowed?) would he be the 1st ever player to do so?

    Ahhhhh, Roy Keane.....
As soon as I heard I knew the debate would start. My views on him are slightly mixed, as it appears most peoples are.
As an Irish fan I was cursing his name after he walked out on us in the world cup. But the one thing about him is that he is a born and bred winner. You can't have too many of them in your team. As a man I have serious reservations about him, as a footballer I have none. On realistic wages (maybe even pay as you play? Unlikley I know!) then why not. It would wind them up no end and from a marketing point of view it could only do good.
One point though. If he is such an ardent Celt and always wanted to play for us, then why hasn't he? Why has it taken until he's on his last legs and without a club for this to become a strong possibility??
But imagine him facing fergiehun in a derby game......
I think that's enough contradictions from me now!

How about a little chant for Brian Quinn before kick off tomorrow. It's deserved.

I have mixed emotions about Keane. Who's place would he take? Injury prone, past his best, wages, disruption etc. On the other hand he is still class and maybe a move to Celtic will push him harder. A broken bone doesn't mean injury prone, maybe he's been unlucky. He's still the best defensive midfielder in England even when past his best.

What i don't agree with is the sentiment "if he loves Celtic why has it taken him so long...he's now not deserving." The answer to that is probably ambition. I'm sure over the past 5 years he still had designs on winning another chapions league medal. Can't question his ambition.

He'd improve the team, no doubt. Lennon deserves to be first choice, the guys immense but there's injury, suspensions and a long hard season to go. I say if the money is right we should grab Keane.

It would be completely irresponsible of Celtic football management to ignore the possibility of landing Roy Keane on our terms.
As someone said earlier he is a winner, an inspiration and has a well of experience. He would impart his winning attitude to our squad. I keep hearing his current salary as a stumbling block, but no one is going to match that anywhere.
If we do manage to secure his services within our broad salary guidelines, it will show our ambition and the board's committment to ensuring CL football at CP next season.

The if he was a Celtic fan he would have joined us years ago arguement doesn't really hold up for a professional...

As fans we might think "If I had the chance to play for Celtic and be on a good wage I'd never think about another club". This changes when you are a footballer. You think I want to have a successful career as possible. Keane probably thought; "I'll go to Man Utd to try to win a European Cup or two and when I've achieved all I can I'll go and play with the club I've supported as a child." This may sound selfish but it's really just being sensible. Thus is the way of the professional footballer.

Keane has made millions from Man Utd and will make more if he gets a testimonial, he'll probably make more as a pundit or manager in the future.

I don't know if Strachan would have Keane fitting into his plans but if he came on a low wage I'm sure he would be delighted to have him at the club.

I consider the La Vanguardia as more centre right in editorial style . Did you see that Laporta´s brother in law had to resign from the board of directors at Barcelona? He was forced out due to being a member of the Foundation Franco. There was a big kick up about it because Laporta had publicly denied it at first and the majority of barça fans are not right wing extremists.

Brian Quinn is a huge Celtic fan.

He extracts a salary from the club that is miniscule compared to what he would get if he did the same job and put in the same hours for any other company.

If Keane is allowed to join Celtic, I'd exepect the same from him given his stated love for Celtic.

I think the benefits of signing Keane are greater than a lot of us think. He's the kind of player whose presence is felt all over the pitch, will raise our status internationally, and the marketing aspect would be incredible. im in canada, and i see a lot of manu keane shirts, and a lot of blank celtic shirts. i don't think we can pass him up. assuming he is reasonable in his wage demands, which i expect him to be.

I think we would be idiotic to even think of Keane. His record is bad enough in England and Europe. Can you imagine what it would be like after a month in the SPL? Anyway, who would he replace? Not Stan, not Lennon.

Here's hoping Brian Quinn makes a full recovery, helped, I'm sure, by a 5-0 victory tomorrow. That's just brought on the High Anxiety. Help, get me outa here.

With the utmost respect to those who say "where will he play?", this is probably one of the most specious arguements I've ever heard. Taken to its logical conclusion, why sign anyone if the team's perfect?

For what it's worth, I would be comfortable seeing Keane take Neil Lennon's place. Celtic would be a better team for it.

Someone made a great point earlier - would you want to see Keano on the park and in the hoops as we were about to kick off against hunnery? It's a no-brainer folks.

It seems to me that Keane has lost the plot in the past through sheer frustration at others not meeeting his sky-high standards - ie the total lack of professionalism of the FAI at the World Cup over accomodation and training facilities; the poor, poor displays of players at Man U that has seen them fall so far behind Chelsea - Rio Ferdinand in particular. Keane lambasts them and what happens? - they finally get their act together and actually beat Chelsea!

This guy is a born winner who would run through brick walls for Celtic if given the chance.

    Sign him.

    As soon as possible.

Firstly, the game tomorrow. Despite our convincing win last week, I still do not think that we should dismiss anyone, so with that in mind, a single goal win will do for me.
Secondly, Mr Keane. I think that if everything is right, then we should sign him. Despite his age, he is still head and shoulders above any player he will face in the SPL. It has been well documented how vital it is for us to win the league this season. I believe that a player of Keane's calibre, would go a long way for us to achieve that goal. As for the criticsm of his ex-team mates, can anybody say that he was wrong in his assertions? A look at the EPL table tells you all you need to know.
For those of you lucky enough to be going tomorrow, enjoy - and give the TEAM your full backing. Make yourself hoarse with CELTIC anthems - leave the sectarianism/bigotry to them!!!

Poem : THE GLASGOW CELTIC TEAM.

As players they had normal brains
That you would find in any weans
But even though they were quite thick
Big Jock's the man to make them tick

When he took over in paradise
The tears flowed freely from his eyes
He told them straight it's hard to vision
How you lot are in the first division

So walking out on to the grass
He held his first communion class
The job was plain he had to face
To put these tims right in their place

He took the chair and let them know
That he was going to have a go
He stated plain with no retraction
I'm going to stop this Catholic action

There's no' a forward here can shoot
We're going to practice with a flute
So to the tune of Derry's walls
Ye'll practice kicking in the balls

And after that on the agenda
It's passing back to no surrender
And when ye dribble up tae score
We'll play the sash my father wore

Now out you go and practice it
And I'll be watching from the pit
but if I see a dirty session
It's, me ye'll come tae fur confession

Now I don't want to rub it in
But while I'm boss ye'll play to win
So every Thursday from now on
Ye'll practice to an orange baun

Ye'll train in tracksuits nice and clean
Ah cannae stick the colour green
The one's I find nae use at all
Will end up back in Donegal

The Celtic board made it their plan
Tae leave it to the orangeman
So here I am and here I'll stay
Until I teach ye how to play

I'll teach ye fitba wance ah start
Ye've only seen in Ibrox Park
Though training you lot isnae funny
I'm only in it for the money

And if yer gaun tae learn tae pass
Ye'll no' have any time fur mass
The priest is on a sticky wicket
If he wants a complimentary ticket

And when I've finished all this talk
I'll take ye for an orange walk
So don't be thinking it odd
If we end up in Copland Road

Don't try and think yer gaun tae dodge
When I'm doon at the orange lodge
For when I'm in the masters chair
The Glasgow Celtic will be there !!!

Rimtimtim 2.15 called him a JOURNEYMAN!!!!(still cant get over that)
Ardoch 2.19 Blamed Keane for stealing Liam Miller?? what a load of tosh, the sixteen game wonder boy had his head turned with money and a agent who gave him terrible advice. He then quotes DAVIE PROVEN!!! what next Hugh Keevins telling us it`s a bad move, or James Traynor. The more journalists that tell us it`s a bad move i can assure you it`s a good one.

My god they were rejoicing when Alex Rae came up last season who was older and not a tenth of the player!!

Take him, don`t hesitate, but we have to say monies tight 20,000 a week max, even a pay per play deal.

Rintintim 7:13 - I shall re-examine Vanguardia in light of your comments - they have reformed themselves.

Keane would be the Maurice Johnston effect writ large - for them; how to accommodate him is major problem. How to afford him? Easy peasy - he can follow this example from The Observer a couple of weeks ago:

    Footballer gets papal blessing

    Barbara McMahon in Rome
    Sunday November 6, 2005
    The Observer

An Italian footballer has become a hero on and off the pitch for asking his team to pay him only the minimum wage.
While some of his team-mates at Roma football club earn millions, Damiano Tommasi has requested a salary of €1,500 (£1,013) a month. After being out of the game for months with a knee injury, the 31-year-old player said he simply wanted to return to playing football at the highest level and economic considerations were low on his list of priorities. A modest salary was enough for his needs, he said, and he was still earning more than many ordinary Italians.

His gesture has led to him being lionised in football-mad Italy, with even the Vatican's official mouthpiece L'Osservatore Romano congratulating him for not pursuing an exorbitant salary or re-signing fee, like other players.
An editorial called the player a fine example and said his was an 'unusual decision... in a world where others earn hundreds of thousands of euros and in which those who already earn millions ask excessive amounts to renew their contracts'.

The remarks have been taken as a pointed criticism of the avarice of today's footballing stars. Tommasi's Roma team-mate Francesco Totti, for example, earns €12 million a year and another multi-million euro player, Antonio Cassano, is benched because he is still trying to negotiate a new contract.

Midfielder Tommasi spent almost all of last season having treatment for an injury that happened during a game with Stoke City in 2004. But he battled back and made his first appearance for Roma in a match last week against Ascoli. Tommasi's team won 2-1.

The player, who has had 10 consecutive contracts with Roma but whose future is uncertain, said he had signed on at the minimum salary for the rest of the season 'because I love football'. He made it clear that the salary, the minimum amount laid down by the footballing union, was at his request.

Websites devoted to Roma, one of the biggest clubs in Italy, have been full of praise for Tommasi's gesture. 'His head is never in the clouds, his words are always moderate, he has strong moral values,' enthused one website.

Tommasi - a former altar boy and practising Catholic, has always been a favourite of the Vatican - but the public endorsement of the player is unusual. In its editorial, the newspaper said: 'Damiano has always thought that a famous footballer has a responsibility as an example to young people and he has always modelled his behaviour with this in mind.'

Speaking recently before a group of young people, the player said: 'Kids see us as idols and we have to give a good example. I do a job that I love and I get a lot of money for doing it. This is a joy but also a big responsibility.'

What message does it send out if we don't go for Keano? That we're not winners, not totally professional, not perfectionists? Keano's philosophy seems to tie in with Strachan's, as our manager knows we have a long way to go before we can challenge the cream of Europe.
And who better than Keano to drive us back towards those heady heights where we belong.
Ask yourself this: What message does it send out if we do sign him?
It will tell the world this: CELTIC ARE BACK!
In my opinion, we MUST do everything we can to get him. Let's not be held back by faint hearts or lack of ambition.

Very best wishes to Brian Quinn; Jock Stein used to go to great lengths before Old Firm games to make sure the back pages carried Celtic stories. I think Brian Quinn is just taking that too far!!

    On the football front...

    Keen on Keano?

    Not too sure....:
My initial thoughts were that if he was really a fan he would have joined by now.

    and

the fact that he let his country down didnt win him any plus points...(although to have a training pitch without goals was a pretty poor oversight)

    And:

He is 34 injury prone and we should be encouraging our youngsters through.

    BUT:

    Keano:

If he plays on a pay as you play..half decent salary what a line up this would be:

    ------------Boruc----------------
    Agathe --Balde ---Mick-----Camara
    ----Petrov----Lennon---Keane---
    <--------------Naka--------------->
    --------Zurawski----Sutton--------

    Over to you WGS

I cannot believe that some of you Celtic fans would not take Keano. He is world class it is that simple.

For instance, would Neil Lennon get a game for United - No chance. Roy Keane walks straight into the United team and its not just because hes the captain its because of his footballing ability.

    http://s43.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2UT6YR9PW2CUL1O2VFTNDWNXGJ

Check this out and tell me you wouldn't want this guy in your team.

I also believe that he wouldn't demand a great deal in wages because its obvious that he is desperate to wear the hoops. I think he would settle for a player / coach role as he is desperate to get into coaching.

PS Good luck for tomorrow but i doubt you'll need it.

On the Keano front an excerpt from the BBC

Roy Keane has talked about playing for Celtic
Celtic have expressed an interest in signing Roy Keane after the 34-year-old midfielder's surprise departure from Manchester United.
Keane has previously said that he would like to end his career at Celtic Park.

A Celtic spokesman expressed admiration for the Ireland captain but said "as yet there have been no discussions".
However, he added: "If at any time Roy would like to speak to us about his future and Celtic's, we would be only too happy to speak to him."
    -----------------
Neither a committer nor denier be…nicely handled. Left it open for all potential outcomes.
I stated my position before if he was to come, come now and only with a six month contract pay as you play and for what ever Pearson gets per game. Celtic are not the ‘make a wish foundation’. I think he would be an awesome weapon in the armory but the remuneration should represent the true value. He is a nice to have and the pay should reflect that.
The other variable is could the money be used better for a longer term resource.
Brand recognition is also a consideration....he known worldwide....is all publicity good publicity?? I am not a marketeer so I don't know, but that is waht they say.

    Evening All

Roy Keane – to all those who say ‘if he always wanted to play for Celtic he should have signed for us years ago’. Is this the same people, posting here, who have been advocating for Celtic to move to the EPL (Best League in the World apparently!)? So, it’s ok for Celtic to play in it but not Roy Keane.

    Get real.

Get him signed (pay as you play).

Fitness - Roy is easily one of the fitest players at Old Trafford and i feel could compete at the HIGHEST level for another 2 seasons, although probably in a more withdrawn role due to him losing a yard or 2.

Temperament - I agree that he can lose it from time to time but its because he cares so much about the club. I think hes been to some Glasgow derby's so he will know what to expect although i think it might be different when hes crunching into tackles at Ibrox. haha.

Effect on the dressing room - Who wouldn't want to play beside Roy Keane? Imagine being a Celtic player in the dressing room before the game looking around at your team mates, you would feel twice the player!

Would playing him hinder able young players coming through - I think it would be the opposite. The young players would look up to him and see the way that he trains and prepares for matches and think that if they done the same then they might make it also.

Signing Keano is a no brainer, he would most likely make Celtic money as he is massive in the far east and i believe you also have a couple of players from that part of the globe.

If the wages were right, I'd take Keane in a heartbeat. Some here have been alluding to his age, but if any manager realises that players' longevity and effectiveness is down to how they look after themselves, then it's Strachan. Keane is a model professional: people talk about him being disruptive in the dressing room and on the pitch, but as far as I can tell, he only tells the truth and if fancy dans aren't doing it, he'll let them know.

Keane is capable of playing at the top level for another two and a half seasons, if a pay for play wage can be agreed, those two years should be in green and white.

Celtic needs a bit of know-how on winning in Europe (I know, I know, I'm getting ahead of myself but we're not going to mess up next year) and Keane knows what it's all about.

He's sure to be in good humour tonight seeing that his home town team, Cork City, have just won the Republic's premier league (even though Keane played for the other cork team, cobh). They beat Derry City 2-0 in the last game of the season to win overtake Derry at the top of the league. Cork's first win since 1993.

    2. If Keane comes who does he replace?

    3. Do you not think the money on Keane would be better spent on buying full backs?

    4. Do you expect to see Didier Agathe to sign a new contract?

Watched WGS on Celtic TV tonight.

heartened by his comments - "if they run harder then we'll run harder, if they play 50% more football then we'll have to play 50% more football"

Now I think WGS is being just a little kind here but I'm glad there is no complacency.

If TFOD play 50% better than last Wednesday and even if we don't improve we'll still win because they were truly atrocious 10 days ago.

Let's hope both teams improve by 50% as it will be a better game to watch and the result will still be as conclusive and possibly more so than last Wednesday.

WGS, please, please make sure there is no complacency and the team live up to the confidence we all seem to have in them on this site.

    Go for it Bhoys!

We know storys in the press of him being abit of a nutter but we are talking about ROY F***ING Keane here!!!!

Roy is a general in the highest order and IF its all true and he really wants to play for Celtic WE SHOULD try and snap him up for at least till the end of the season.

IN NO WAY would I think STANS place would be the role hes would be placed it would be Lennons.

The truth is Keane was TOO GOOD for celtic in his prime and Celtic IN NO WAY could affored him. So stop this "where was he 4 years ago rubbish.

What I think Celtic should do is say, We arent going to pay you anywhere near what u were getting at Man U if you come here you are playing "for the shirt" if he says I want ANY sort of real money Celtic should say thanks but no thanks. Keanes a hardcore Celtic fan hes not going to ask for wages that he knows will sink the club.

We cant affored Keane if theres a chance he wants to play for the love of our great club we should by all means welcome him to the team.

    Naka Keane Petrov Maloney

is a midfield that will win the SPL and give us some great football.

I love Lennon but the only person who can do his role is Sutton and a young Lawson

and Keane is a FAAAAR better player than Lennon

If ever there was a journeyman it was Roy Keane. Couldn´t lace Stilian's boots, nor Lenny's. I sincerely hope Celtic inform him that there is more money to be earned in Quatar

I agree with you! Lenny is the most effective midfielder I've ever seen. I'd have him play on till he was 40 - and if he wanted to retire I'd kidnap his nice little cat until he relented. ;-)

And for those of us worried about the singing tomorrow - Don't. We don't have any sectarian songs. ;-D

    U2...

For goodness sake. What a ramble sir.

I do go on a bit, but I can't help myself. Tourettes' is a terrible scourge. ;-)

    Kevtic...

I wish Celtic supporters would concern themselves with their own club rather than outside politics and rivils clubs.

“In our time the destiny of man presents itself in political terms”
    Thomas Mann

Our every action is political. There is no such thing as "outside politics". Moreover, Celtic began as a political club and will wither the day that changes.

Therefore to call someone who is not in any way associated to that order an Orange B******

My point was that Rangers encourage and foster that association. They made and sold Orange strips, sell the strips of a Chinese club because of their colour (Orange, natch...) Alex McLeish is that Manager of that club. If Rangers sold KKK memorabilia, would we not excoriate him for it? Rain derision down from the stands? He's not an innocent bystander. He's not some stupid fan thats been sold a concept. He's one of the establishment! He's not forced to work for them. As I say, I'd rather we didn't use offensive language like "Bas****" - The Orange bit? He's asking for it.

It's like the old question - Who's the bad guy and who's the victim, the Junkie or the Dealer? Rangers are selling this rubbish to their fans. Their fans don't invent it. Huge amounts of marketing dollar and intellect are going into selling this tat to the gullable fans.

By all means, sell the England top, sell the Unionist angle - it's fair enough, but Orangism? No thank you...

We have many great songs to sing and great players past and present to celebrate than chant tosh.

Now that is a fact. I liked the sarcastic "Ha ha ha" to the sash last time out - thats the way to beat them.

    vinniethedog...

You talk a lot of sense my good man. :-)

    ayrshirecelt...

We cannot live our lives as apologists, but we should be mindful of the wrongdoings of our institutions/country/society. The problem is that these wrongdoings often outlive the original instigators. This does not make them any less wrong and the institutions should accept some form of responsibility for these actions. Simply saying "It happened a long time ago" doesn't wash. (I'm not saying thats what you are saying, but it's often cited as a reason for keeping the status quo)

In the end, if the Protestant Churches were in any way repentant there are many actions that could be taken. The Act of Settlement is a festering sore on our society and there have been no moves to repeal, no representation made on the issue by any of the Protestant Churches. The Synod carries a lot of weight and does little with it.

we should all take responsibilities for the sins of our fathers

Firstly, I dislike the word sin. To accept the notion of sin one has to accept the dogma of religion. As an aethiest I do not adhere to the docrines of any Religion and I don't accept the dogma, so sin is something I'm incapable of commiting. I am however more than capable of wrong doing.
We have to accept and try to make reparation for the past wrongs of our society and of any institutions we may follow. It's the only way we can make our world a better place to live. We learn by the mistakes of others.

Are you? If you are not, then I read what you have written as, well, sectarian.

I am. So it's not! :-) I simply spared the readers of CQN my more general thoughts on organised religion (and in particular, the Catholic Church) To my mind, religion should be a force for the good. It's frequently not (as witnessed by the Catholic churches' dismissal of liberation theology - now that would have made me a Catholic!)
I made a point in the context of the other posters comment, nothing more. There was no wider point to make in that context (although outwith it, it has a lot of value)

    supercelt...

If there is anything that tones down the blog it is this, Not the light hearted banter by some amusing contributers.

On any other forum I'd agree, but CQN is notable (for the most part) for its higher intellectual level. Most of the debates have stayed on friendly, civil, but informed and articulate debate. Education is never a bad thing. I don't think I've seen (on this particular thread) any unbefitting or embarrasing comments. CQN is a cut above and I think it can handle it. Whether other posters want to read it is another matter - but then thats the beauty of CQN, if you don't want to read it you don't have to - equally, it helps define CQN as a place for informed debate. CQN - reaches the places other forums can't! :-) On the flipside, would you rather CQN was nothing more than witty badenage and superficial comment? What makes Celtic different to supporting, say, the Accies?

    clanmacdonald said…

Celtic is about football stop going on about religion.

As it happens, I wasn't going on about religion, I was going on about the Orange order (for the most part).

    Weeron...

I usually skip your comments, but made the mistake of reading them tonight. I won't make that mistake again.

Lisbon sent Inter back to the Middle Ages - evidence below (Wikipedia article) - will tomorrow send tfod back to the caves where the ugly gets belong? One can hope.

You've answered all the points I made though.

Fitness - you've seen him more than I, so I have to take your word for it.

Temperament - Fair enough. Perhaps his experience would help him keep his cool. Although if you saw what Alan Thompson was sent off for the last time we played at Ibrox, you'd understand my apprehension!

Effect on the dressing room - Point taken

Hindering young players - This is assuming he doessn't slate them all on Celtic TV after we lose a game!

What I will say is this:

    1) If the Man U fans are so upset at losing him, he msut still have something to offer.

    2) If Chick young says it would be a disaster, it's highly unlikely that it would be a disaster. The man is an idiot (CY that is, not RK).

If he does sign I will support him and if he is a revelation I will delight in telling everyone how wrong my initial thoughts were.

then should you not also require the Catholic church to repent, royalty and the aristocracy to repent and ask forgiveness of the generations and generations of working class catholics and protestants who have suffered because of the desires and demands of fuedal and then ruling class elites.

Absolutely. I didn't mention them in the original thread simply because it was out of context, but you are absolutely correct in each of the above and what I would require of them. (As if I would have any say, however...)

Basically I'm a believer in the Brehon Laws, in communism and socialism. Everyone is equal and we share responisbility to make things better. Our institutions carry great responsibility.

I wasn't trying to make the Protestant Churches out to be the "Great Satan" - I'm sorry if it read that way. It was not my intention. The Catholic Church & the Monarchy (amongst others) have a lot of atone for. But that is a separate debate (One I have frequently with a friend who is a Catholic missionary and Doctor of Philosophy (and a heretic believer in liberation theology)) :-) As I say, it comes down down to recognising when institutions do wrong and making some form of reparation or gesture to signify we have learned from these past crimes and progressed.

For the game, 1- 0 to Celtic with a scrappy goal in the last minute will do me (3 or more is my ideal however). And Lennon scoring? Bliss. Pure Bliss. No foul language at Celtic Park and I'll recant my aethiesm and believe in God. (not sure which one, mind!) :-D

WGS is sleeping happily tonight dreaming the dreams of a man with a bright future. He has dreams that his work in progress is about to take a large leap forward and his timescale is about to be shortened. Another piece of the jigsaw is within his grasp.

    His vision:
Nakamura being protected and free to roam, create, bewilder and bewitch in midfield without worrying about what happens behind him
Petrov being able to concentrate on driving forward beyond the strike force and threatening the opposition centre backs
A consistent, dominating and secure midfield with back up players
Options for a front three with strength, speed, guile and goals
A back three with height, strength and speed
An agile and confident goalie who dominates his area

The final piece of the jigsaw KEANE of course.

    Roy Keane or not?

Let me put it this way; I would rather he was playing with me as opposed to against me.

    Celtic want him.
Our consultant Martin, wants him (do not think MON has a passive role here).
    Our manager wants him.

Just a couple of points :-

Roy Keane or not? I don't know, but if it means taking Neil Lennons place - no way. Much as I have admired Keane for several years now I don't believe he can replace NL.
I have no doubts about RK's ability to play and lead, but Neil does that and fits in.
The younger players would look up to RK? Probably, but when they get in trouble out on the pitch, who would they want for help who wouldn't crucify them afterwards?
Who would they trust rather than fear?
RK at his best may have been a better player than NL (a lot depends on which managers give you the opportunities), but I seriously doubt that he can can offer more now. I used to think that NL was good, but coming to the end of his career, but now the wee bugger is even better. Typical NL!
p8ddy (or diddy, as we say in Govan). I have read the majority of your posts, but tonight was the limit. You are a complete disgrace to this site and the normal ambience of discussion.
    Why?
    That's easy.
You have a propensity to take personal offence in matters of public discussion. Deviating opinions are not personal attacks. You're reactions merely suggest arrogance, as though the rest of our world revolves around your words of wisdom. You're not that important, except in your own mind.
You also seem to display a degree of self-indulgent intolerance which conflicts with the efforts which most posters make who just wish to get on with their lives and conduct themselves as best as they can and hope that others do to.
Even that is not especially remarkable were it not for the fact that you appear to be a highly intelligent, thoughtful and erudite person.
Much has been said here about 90 minute bigots. They exist, but don't scare me. Your self-rightneousness is both more frightening and a greater disappointnment.
Join the Celtic movement or leave it - just stop being so pompous and self-important.

    Alex

p8ddy ur right i was to emigrate to oz this year with the family but told the wife i couldnt do it as i wouldnt settle due to the fact my life is celtic sad but true. I would miss being at celtic park every other week or basically seeing the bhoys every week. My wife unhappy about my decision but she understood. Yes if you are a true supporter you would walk on broken glass to play for the greatest team and fans in the world.
Do i want Keano yes and no
Yes as a squad player if NL gets injured but NO to replacing the wee man no chance.
No sectarian songs tomorrow just me and my bhoy will be singing or Irish songs
All the best to Brian hope you are back soon

I know there is a substantial difference in opinion about Roy Keane among the support.

Just had a thought - his attitude and application is very similar to WGS

The dark knight from Govan (as opposed to our esteemed Another Alex Frae Govan) had a turbulent relationship with WGS but knew how valuable he was to the team on the park.

After WGS went to Leeds that desire for winning and constantly improving the Man Utd team on the park passed on to RK

The personalities may be different but the desire to improve, continually be the best and out-think and out-fox your opponents burns in them both.

I'm not sure about the POSSIBLE signing of RK but that desire and determination out on the park reflecting the determination of the Manager may be what we need - I am just not sure.

However even at 35 there is undoubted talent in abundance - that kind of class is timeless regardless what you think of the man as a personality.

In the end surely WGS has the final say - if he thinks it is worth pursuing to give the club that extra edge over the next few months then let's back that judgement.

Many felt Craig Bellamy was a gamble and could prove to be disruptive in the dressing room but in fact the guy carried us for long periods between January and April this year.

It is my view that Bellamy just ran out of steam at the wrong moment having carried us for so long on his back.

If Roy Keane signs then let us get behind him and hope he can do so many positive things for us in the way Craig Bellamy did but this time we don't leave the individual concerned to carry the burden by themselves.

Paul what is Martins role exactly?

As much as i loved the man, i have no wish for him to be interfering at a club were he no longer picks the team. If keane signs, it has to be the decision of WGS or nothing, but sadly i suspect the pound signs will be flashing before the boards eyes, as usual.

Like you I have no doubts about RK's attitude or ability, but, also like you, I'm not sure.
Forgetting about what he may be able to do, where are we now? Where does that fit in with WGS' plans for where we are and where he wants us to be?
As usual, I'll place my faith in WGS.
I still believe he will prove to be one of out best managers ever.

    Regards
    Alex

    Great points about Lennon.

Lennon will offer continuity while we bring younger players through. Keane would flit in and out of the team due to injury/suspension, and possibly disrupt the transition from the old guard to the new kids on the block.

Neil Lennon has never had the ability that Roy Keane has, but he is a different type of player and remains under-rated in my opinion.

I actually think Strachan has helped his development over the last couple of months. Where MON would have been quite content for Lenny to sit back and mop up, Strachan seems to have been encouraging him to support the attack and interchange with Petrov more.

And I would rather Lenny got his third Celtic goal tomorrow in a Celtic win than Keane signing and scoring 15 before the season's end.

After all he's been through in his personal life AS A DIRECT RESULT OF CHOOSING TO PLAY FOR CELTIC (sorry for shouting) I believe that Lenny deserves it.

I'm afraid I'm with Another Alex and Badger tonight because your posts have been very disappointing.

Indeed you have taken piety and sanctimony to new levels.

To perch yourself on the moral high ground as "living and breathing Celtic" is frankly vacuous.

There are many on this site who care deeply for the club in a physical and emotial way and as such are no different to you.

To disparage or dilute that feeling in an exchange with a fellow blogger is poor.

I have always found your posts thought-provoking and interesting, even at times inspiring. Please get back to that and spare us the facile nonsense we got tonight.

I make a comment about Keane being a great player WHICH IS CLEARLY fact and now im not a true Celtic fan, This is a website that lets fans of the mighty celtic can come on and share there views and its people like you that piss me off

No. Did I offer any appraisal of Mr Keanes' talents? I took issue with one thing you said. Let me refresh your memory Badger,

The truth is Keane was TOO GOOD for celtic in his prime

My comment to you had nothing to do with your opinion of Roy Keane the player and everything to do with him being "Too good" for Celtic.

You say we have different depths of feelings for the club. OK, I'll buy that - You support Celtic a little. Not a lot, but a little. Is that fair? Do you like that better? Is that more accurate?

You say we have a "Great club" pity in your eyes it's not good enough for players like Roy Keane in his prime.

because your life is celtic people who havent supported as long or gave up their life somewhere else to be back in Glasgow arnt fit to voice their Views, COME ON MATE

I didn't say you were not fit to hold an opinion. I just asked you a question. Are you a Manchester United fan? I didn't say you were, I just asked a question. If you say you are a Celtic fan, you are unlike any other Celtic fan I know. Any other. I'd imagine most Celtic fans would bristle at your comment, but I'll not project my feelings on to others. "No player is bigger than the club" is a phrase thats used often. Not without good reason.

And for the record, being a Celtic fan has nothing to do with the amount of time "served". Not in my book anyway. It has little to do with age either. Don't try and miscast me as some supremacist Celtic fan.

Given I frequently post less than popular opinions, opine that users of CQN are all equal and have a perfect right to hold and espouse their views, it would rank as the biggest about turn since..well...something big and about turny (apologies to Ben Elton and Richard Curtis for the appalling Blackadder-ism) if I were to try and deny your right to free expression, but free expression without comment is a luxury even you cannot be aforded.

We would all play for the shirt and would give anything to be on the field for Celtic but this is a business

I don't have any issue with that. But then, thats not what I took issue with in the first place. Let me repeat - my issue is with the "TOO GOOD FOR CELTIC" comment. Nothing more.

Keane in his prime would have thought of Celtic but he would have also thought of his family and what life he could give them playing for Man U

..Because no one has ever got rich playing for Celtic. Poor Roy Keane, he could have collected extra money by doing a paper round to subsidise the pittance he would have earned had he joined Celtic.
Or...Roy Keane, a fine example of vulgar greed and avarice. Earning obscene amounts of money and no amount is ever enough. Real Celtic fans (if top players) could earn plenty by playing for Celtic.
For instance - 30k a week at Celtic or 50k at Man U. I'd take the 30k personally. But then I'm not a dewy eyed celebrity Celtic fan like Sean Connery or Keane who's mad keen on the 'tic as long as he has his complimentary ticket and heated seat.
There's an old saying "put your money where your mouth is" Thats what we (you and I) do every week. We make sacrifices to see Celtic, we pay. Where's Roy Keane?
(BTW Roy, If you sign for us, I never meant a word it of it - you're great.)

And for you to come on and call me a Man Untd fan and say im not a supporter of the club is just a clear shot blow the belt and id expect more from a celt fan, Truth is you dont know me mate so make your point without questioning my loyalty

Look, I didn't mean to offend you. Clearly you are sensitive to being asked these questions, but seriously, what did you expect when you said Keane was "Too good"? What did you expect?
I'm pleased you lit up at the suggestion you were not a Celtic fan - It shows you care Thats what being a Celtic fan is about. But no one, no one is bigger than our club (it's not mine or yours, it's ours) Not Roy Keane, not Ryan Giggs, not even Paul67!
Celtic are a much better and bigger thing than Roy Keane. We've seen better players before Keane (The lisbon Lions) during Keane (McStay, Lennon, Henke) and we'll see others after Keane.

Roy Keane is/was a wonderful player - but too good for Celtic? I don't think so.

    /p
