Press Conference update- Petrov wants to stay at Celtic- Strachan likes to vary style

I really do not like ‘wee games’ after a big victory. Remember when we played Hibs at home in April?

After reaching the top of the league for the first time last weekend, Celtic face the potential banana skin away to Falkirk on Sunday.

Falkirk results and performances have been variable this season, but they have perfected the art of defending deep and playing on the break. They enjoyed a second half lead on both occasions they visited Celtic Park this season, and made Celtic look pedestrian each time.

With Falkirk having already taken points from Hearts and Rangers this season, and I see no room for complacency from Celtic.

Injuries are such, that for the first time this season, the Celtic starting eleven should be predictable enough. With important games to come this month, the absence of Zurawski and Beattie – our two most mobile strikers – will have an impact on our attacking options.

Gordon Strachan said his players had “done astonishingly well” to help win him the Manager of the Month award for October. “A lot of managers deserve a pat on the back to make this league as good as it is”.

Lets hope that John Hughes is not a front runner for the November award.

Strachan also talked about variety of style being important. “If you just play the one style other teams will know how to defend against you. You need to vary you style.”

Interestingly, the manager gave the players time off this week ahead of the international travel many will make next week.

Stillian Petrov, who was Player of the Month for October, was remarkably candid on his desire to stay at Celtic: “I am not bothered by interest from other clubs; I just want to make these fans happy

“I have had talks with Celtic and plan to have more.

“In a couple of months you will know what will happen….. I would be very happy to stay”.

I am delighted to hear this from Stan.

He is a player at the peak of his career who will have options to move to other leagues. Every time I hear a player say they want to stay at Celtic now, I think back to Peter Lawwell’s comment at the EGM: “Players say they want to stay at Celtic, but they should add ‘only if the money is right’”.

Lets hope a deal is done.

    Guys, if you ain't fast...

Here's hoping Stan realises that we were the team who gave him his chance at the big time, and repays us by inking a new deal at his current rate... perhaps a clause or two that would entitle him to a big bonus dependant on success or the league we're playing in!

just an idea and then I'll leave you alone
why not set CQN up as a company - a charity and advertise the full time job that needs to be done in the appropriate manner salary etc
I'm sure the right person could be recruited to take over the ever increasing duties and help see your plans come to fruition.
with all the business acumen of the people on this site I am sure there would be no huge challenge in finding imaginitive and non obtrusive ways of funding such a position and way forward.
Perhaps if people were willing to forward thier cv's to you, you could pick a few of the people with the necessary tools to see this through - accountancy - legal-marketing etc
As you can tell by my increasing length of posts we have now reached the other area outside food and Celtic in which I am passionate -Enterprise!!

    Martinobhoy, (from previous blog)

Whilst not strictly speaking part of the bet, I will gladly donate the money to charity this weekend. This act will be witnessed by Baldymeister.

Anyway, Petrov..... If he says he wants to stay? who are the club to argue? Pay him an accepatble wage (to all parties) and we've got someone to build a team around for the next five years.

Congratulations to WGS and Stan. And never a truer word was said re: big game rebound. Every game is a must win for us, we all know that, we demand or at least would like to, but this is the sort of banana skin game we cannot afford to lose.

    Hallelujah!!

Still great to hear those words from Stan. Just what we need going into a tricky away tie on Sunday.

And Paul I listened to the Brain Quinn audio last night at home. Just like every one else on here - great piece of work that is much appreciated. Well done.

....ahem! That's what I was saying last night.

Last season we had become too predictable. The opposistion would simply cut out the long ball and we were screwed.

By adding more dimensions to our play, the team can interchange styles depending on the quality of opposisition or the way the game is panning out.

This dosen't give the other team a minute and any lapses in concentration will be punished.

But it could be little confusing for our players too. They need to work at this in training all the time and recent performances show that they have been.

    Well Done Guys!

The bhoy with… it is all about pace here at Celtic Quick News. As Nickhealy so profoundly opined: “whoo hoo”.

Whitedoghunch, not sure at all about recruiting someone for CQN.

I am firmly of the belief that there are only two things in business that cause real problems; staff and customers.

I think that CQN could do with some formalisation, but staffing would not work.

Thanks Martinobhoy. I hope that BQ gets a chance to see the positive feedback he has received since yesterday.

    Paul,

As you know, I've been an avid reader of this site ever since I discovered it. It was suggested last season that a way to help you out might be to have people contribute a small amount of money to it. I would rather have that and keep it in true Celtic hands rather than have advertising which might compromise that.

Before we get to the weekend's game, weren't you promising us great info from Govan this week? Have the MIH's accounts not been published.

I'm glad you recognise that we've lost our pace without Magic or Beattie. i don't know if it will matter too much against Falkirk but having watched both their matches at Parkhead, we need to realise we'll be in a game. I would put Maloney up front with Sutton and bring in Pearson, if he's fit. Your own idol, Thompson I would leave on the bench with Hartson and see if they can add anything in the last quarter. Oh, and I think Agathe needs to be given a run in place of Telfer. We'll need his pace against Rangers.

Long may this site continue, Paul. A true island of sanity (most of the time).

By the way, can I send in my chaeque for the new shares now or do I have to wait until after the EGM?

Well, this is us about to commence possibly the most important month of our season. I reckon if we come out of November unbeaten, or better still with 4 victories out of 4, we'll have taken the first major step towards getting the title back. Looking ahead to December, we've got an equally tough run of it - Aberdeen away, Hibs home, ICT away, Livi home then Hearts away on New Years Day. Best take it game by game though, starting with Sunday!

Interesting to hear that Magic is back training - I hadn't heard this at all. Hope it's true! If so, it could be a huge boost for the Old Firm games, even if he's on the benh for the first one.

Just noticed Liam Miller has signed on loan with Leeds till January. I know not everyone likes him, but I'd definitely try to sign him back - I think he'd be the perfect replacement for Lennon, and he'd fit perfectly into our current set up. Imagine both him and Petrov making runs forward beyond the strikers - it'd really add an edge to ou midfield. We could do a lot worse.

  • At 04/11/05 15:03, Blogger thismancraig said…

Interesting on Miller - read a report that they thought he was too slow to make it at the top level.

Can't say I'm too disapointed for him - ultimately he played about 20 games for us.

Great news on the newly dapper Zurawski and on Pearson (who is fit)

If magic is back training i think WGS will use him in the first Rangers match at full tilt for about an hour.

By the second game he should be a good bit fitter.

The board isn't alone with their new plan.WGS you can bet also has a plan,in this instance to do with unleashing magic on our adversaries from the west.

I know whoever invented customers and staff should be ashamed at the way they perform.
I really meant a simple one suitable person working through the mechanics of your plan under your guidance.
Scottish Enterprise has a scheme graduates into business where they provide people from all fields and have a dedicated team that make sure they perform the task they are allocated-this can last a few months or a few years.
    enough enough
back to the hoops I promise

As I said in the previous post, lets get tight to Latapy on Sunday as he gets everything moving for them. If he is taken care of then we should win comfortably. Maybe tie a packet of B&H from the tunnel, he'll be off like a shot when he sees it.

I think you are saying that as there are only 15 T's left, it is easier for you to continue doing it yourself. On top of everything else. But if you decide to market anything else please let me know. I'm registered with PayPay and using eBay could be a sensible option.

In this case the logistics have beaten us but I'm glad we've raised the issue of how you / we manage the rapid development of CQN. It would be interesting to hear more from you on this topic.

He has gone the way of many 'young starlets' who started to believe their own press. I hope he and his agent are happy with his chosen career path.

............not so much a burning issue/insightful critique/ whatever, more of a ramble this one..............

The 'skorrie´s now back in residence in Rio (de Janeiro) and regularly watches the fitba here. Last night it was Palmeiras v Flamengo.

Now. For those of you who don't know - Flamengo (Clube Regatta do Flamengo as they're officially known. Or CFR as it is on their club badge, which is vitually identical to a rearrangement of these tainted letters. Need I write more on why they're a loathsome mob?) are struggling to avoid relegation. Last night it was a backs to the wall, blood and snot, end to end saga which saw them steal a 1-0 victory. What's this to do with us? I hear you read.

Welllll, Palmerias's "creative midfield brain" (OK, OK I watched in the pub. That's what the bloke next to me called him) is Juninho. Just thought I'd let you know that apart from diligently whining at every decision/lost ball. He disappeared as soon as it was obvious that 'mengo were not going to lie down. Funny that, eh?

Another hooped offcast down here is Scihiedt, who is playing centre half at Botafogo (my adopted team - the Partick Thistle of Rio). Seems like the big galoot is actually holding it together well for them (still as stecky as an arthritic man going to an arthritis conference on St Arthritis's Day).

Flamengo v Botafogo this Sunday so (if anybody's intrested) I'll maybe post more on that one next week.

From what I gather the intention is that Magic will make his comeback in the league game against the huns. He has just resumed light training and will make a reserve appearance or 2 before being thrown to the wolves(or the gers if you will).

I've said it before and I will say it again, but the issue of whether Stan stays and becomes true Hoops legend is down to him. As long as he is not offered a deal which is completely derisory compared to the wages of some who are contributing far less than he does to 1st team matters, or his mentor Stoitchkov doesn't try and engineer a move for his Gholden Bhoy to his old chums at Barca.

For the record I believe Stan to be a complete family man in the Henke mould-if the wife and wean are happy then he is also a happy chappy! If for some reason he is unhappy and does not want to stay then the whole issue of 'sustainability' comes into play. We would simply have to sell him to the highest bidder(stick yer 3M up yer erchie, Mark Hughes). I pray this won't be the case.

A few bloggers have previously stated this Sunday's tricky game at Jellystone Park(Yogi's hoose!) as a potential 'banana skin'.
This reminds me of a great quote from Rambo McInally regarding a hazardous FA cup tie for Liverpool at Burnley/Barnsley or somewhere:
"That's a banana skin waiting to happen, that one!".

A big hello to all the Bhoys and Ghirls fortunate enough to make it at the get together tomorrow.

    Hail hail to all

    Paul

Congratulations on the great artcile yesterday- a good read/listen indeed......shame about BIG JOE breaking the site ...lets hope Mr BQ attempted to post so he had access to the subsequent posts...

    On the interview:

Although MR BQ didnt say too many surprising things the biggest postive is that he and the club are recognising that the direct method of communication is more effective than the diluted advertising led version of the tabloid press...lets hope the communication continues after the share offering has passed..PL next please

    On the share offering:

    A few points;

The move to aim will reduce reporting requirements ever so slightly and the marketability of the shares will remain roughly the same, the real reason is that there is an added tax incentive for AIM investors...I wonder if DD considered this ;-)

    My worry is that DD will probably own 49% of the club after the issue- a couple of questions on this;

I know DD will have permission to hold 49% of shares without having to make an offer for the rest of the club, but once his pref shares are converted will he have to seek permission again as he will have an even greater margin or is there flexibility within the egm motion?

Does DD holding 49% not go against what Fergus wanted?

Were they not able to provide an alternative underwriter?

In addition, DD having this many shares leaves us more open to a takeover..if DD takes a hissy fit with the fans again and throws his toys out of the pram...

Lets all dig deep and limit DD's shareholding...

    On the subject of communication:

I must pass on some congratulations to the PLC for the redesign of the website (at long last) and also the increasing use of freevideo links on the site....they seem to be finally realising that the site is a shop window and it is important to drive more traffic to it.....

I still cant see the sixtee7.com t-shirts on their site though ;-)

    On other matters Celtica:

Always good to hear from the press conference....when will we see that CQN microphone in front of Gordon for our weekly report?

    On the stan front:

Lets hope Stan doesnt have to wait two months for that suitable offer to come through....as Ive said before he is the first man down on the teamsheet...

    On the t-shirt front:

A wee suggestion...why dont you add a few pounds on to the price of each tee and any profits made can be retained for the maintenance of the site.....providing a sustainable future for the CQN movement...

    Parkheadcomesalford, I hear your comments.

I’ve not asked about MIH this week (eye’s elsewhere).

Not sure when you can send your money in for shares, have you seen the size of the prospectus? About ½ an inch.

    Kojo, thanks for your comment.

I was v impressed by the feedback BQ received, even from those such as Neg Anon, who have made their views clear in the past.

The verdict was unanimous; I hope he gets the chance to read his reviews on this occasion.

Thanks Rumoid, yes, DD will need to seek permission again to waive the takeover bid for the company in 2007. I understand this is the plan.

I have been recording the press conferences for some time now, but the bloggers ‘fleet of foot’ might have stepped on a few toes at C67.

There is also the bandwidth question.

And more; you would not believe some of the questions. Painful in the extreme.

"I am firmly of the belief that there are only two things in business that cause real problems; staff and customers."

Damn shame that it's the same two resources that make it successful... You can't ever win can you?

Worry about where the goals will come from if Sutton and Hartson start up front; both seem to have lost their scoring touch in the last few games.

Paul67 - I also have the prospectus. If you think it's half an inch thick, then you must be kidding Mrs67 in another department ;-D

Listened to the interview last night - great work. Also managed to catch the Fergus interview - he was much maligned in the past, but achieved everything he said he would. I'm sure I still have the letter from him when he was based in Canada and had formed a company called Firstgreen - a true visionary (and shrewd businessman).

We should recognise 'The man who saved Celtic' - maybe a campaign through CQN for a statue in the same way as NTV did for Big Jock 10-15 years ago.

Thoughts? Kojo - interested in your take on this too.

BTW, anyone accusing noel90 of being a nutter should read the last post on his blog. Someone, somewhere is barking mad and it ain't noel90.

As for recognising Fergus, maybe collect the proceeds from the sale of a special limited edition hat?

Celtic's Under-19s beat Hearts 3-0 at Barrowfield today. I'd love to tell you the scorers but I'm worried that my eyes were playing tricks on me. Marc Miller definitely got the first from close range after a vicious inswinging corner from Ryan Conroy, and Paul McGowan tapped in the third thanks to great set-up play by Simon Ferry.
But at the second, I was sure McGowan robbed the keeper and laid the ball back for Jim O'Brien to lob into the net. But the official website has it the other way round.
Was anyone else at the game? I was behind the goal at the other end and my eyesight's not brilliant. Help me out here, gonnae!
As for the match, the outstanding player by far was Simon Ferry. Imagine the work rate and tackling of Neil Lennon welded on to the attacking flair of Stilian Petrov. Tasty, eh? And he's only 17. This wee lad will be a HUGE player for Ra Sellik.
Scott Fox in goal made two great saves, Scott Cuthbert was immense at centre back, the midfielders Teddy Bjarnason and Conroy are class acts and the forward line of McGowan and O'Brien gave the Jambo giants the runaround.
I'll post a fuller report tomorrow on the usual place
    (http://celticfcblog.blogspot.com)
but even I have a social life, you know. Off to a 40th. Gawd, remember when it was all 18ths and 21st parties, all slicked-back hair, hormones and Brut aftershave?

    Actually, Malheureusement.........

    Can also mean "ALAS!"

Which could also be very appropriate to use..in my context.

One last thing,Stan Petrov as far as the fans are concerned is the perfect choice to be our next club captain.

He is the perfect role model for young aspiring professional footballers. He would be a great marketing tool when trying to attract players from eastern Europe, and he would be a great ambassador for our club.

I understand what you are saying and emotion may dictate that we open the cheque book for Stan but the key to BQ's interview with Paul was the new strategy of "sustainability"

We could (and probably will) argue here on CQN about what really is defined as sustainability but clearly the Board have now taken stock and the structure of our financial planning, debt management and strategic investment has changed and no more will we allow negotiations or external situations to force our hand.

In essence the tail will not wag the dog in the future and every move made will be in the long term interests of the club and that will apply to everyone at the club including our very best players.

I want Stan to stay and be our future leader but not at any price - let the negotiations begin and hopefully conclude with SP extending for another two or three years but if it is not to happen then let the conveyor belt of talent coming through take up the position or let our new European scouting system find the answer.

My old and dear friend, mineastella,

I am glad that you brought this up.

    I did ...in the Past.....

And I was surprised to find that there was a tad mucho disagreement...... on just what we owed to The Vulpine Wearer of the Eternal Bunnet.

I, on the other hand, heartily endorse some kind of Visible Recognition of the Great Man's achievement.

Something along the Lines of Bronze Plaque...... with an Etching of his Visage .....(Not to forgo the Bunnet,remember!}....

    With these Appropriate Words, Emblazoned.......

"THE MAN WHO SAVED THE GLASGOW CELTIC"

I do tend to slip in a Jest or Four...here and there, in my offerings........

But I am deadly serious, in my Boundless Admiration, for the
    Wonderful Achievement that MR.McCann Parented.

He gave us back Our Beloved Team, from the hands of the Receivers...... Yes, Gentlemen..... Glasgow Celtic was Snatched from the Brink of RECEIVERSHIP!

The fact that, in the end, he did leave, laughing all the way to the Bank........... Does not DETRACT in any Shape of Form....... From his Monumental Accomplishment!

As a matter of interest, I was having a chat the other day with a very fervid investor in the Celtic Dream, who told me that he himself was very surprised that his old friend had not received the thanks that he was entitled to, by the Celtic Fan Base.

He hoped that his old Buddie's recent act of Thrusting his Face above the Parapet..........may, just may...... Lead to a Rebirth of Thought, on His worth to the Glasgow Celtic.

    Ya Just Never Know!

There is NO SUCH THING AS BAD PUBLICITY.(As long as ONE's Name is correctly spelled!)

    Hail! Hail!

Kojo - couldn't agree more - a plaque in the Fergus McCann Stand (formerly known as the North Stand) would do nicely!

Gerry - in my experience of delivering bad news (or involved in the process) - always best to do so on a Friday as it gets less coverage and the 'city' doesn't read a newspaper on a Saturday.

Thanks for your reply and as with Gromit-k9 I see the point entirely.

However as we are all fond of saying "If you know the history" and in my lifetime of watching the Bhoys I have seen how players feel the need to move and the magnet of Celtic and CP cannot hold them.

My all time favourite player when I started going to see Celtic was King Kenny but the club could do nothing to stop his move to Liverpool (whether it was ambition, money or a desire to try something different) nothing Celtic could do was good enough.

Within a few short years the next superstar we produced was Charlie Nicholas and he did the same to us.

I would be so sad to see Stan go and I fervently hope he stays but Celtic is the only thing that counts and if the future of our club and our movement means Stan sets his sights so high and beyond us that he forces our hand then so be it.

I am in my 40's (decrepit old senile that I am) and I am more positive and hopeful about the future of Celtic than I have been for a LONG, LONG TIME.

I think the next generation of Kenny Dalglish's, Davie Hays, Danny McGrains, George Connelly's are ready to come forward and that can only be good for all of us.

I hope Stan has the sense to see that and the good judgement to know that he has every chance of being the fulcrum for that next generation to develop.

And anyway let's be honest he will still be extremely well paid - Celtic may not be the highest payers in the UK but we are up there so whatever happens we are hardly going to leave Stan or any other player for that matter in a state of destitution.

I wouldn't be surprised if Petrov becoming Captain is something that WGS will use as an incentive for Stan to stay put.

He was in the papers this week saying how badly he wanted to win the SPL for Lenny's sake after the blow of going out of Europe in his first game as Captain.

I think it was genuine reverence offered from Stan to Lenny and highlighted a few things; his admiration of Lenny, team camaraderie, his love of Celtic, his suitability for the Captain role. Lets give Lenny his season though the Bhoy deserves to be remembered as a good Celtic captain and stalwart.

    If Stan is the same guy that is his pulic persona then I'm sure if WGS is saying to him;

    1. Your playing in the middle in your favoured position
    2. Youve replaced Henk as far as adulation is concerned.
    3. We're going to build a team around you
    4. Were going to make you Captain
    5. Your going to get an increased salary and obviously (see 1-4) a long term contract.

Then the issue of money should not come into it but ambition only. If he chooses anywhere else he might be heading for a stint at left back again and he would be turning his back on a lot.

Celtic will get it sorted without resorting to BoboBaldesque contract conditions. We certainly shouldn't be building a team around a mercenary. He is also only four years away from a testimonial. We will see the best of Stan and hopefully we can offer him a strong challenge and the chance to become a household name across Europe.

    Hail Hail

Agree Shamrock.I have always found it strange that a player would move for money alone.Since I will never come close to that earning potential perhaps I am not qualified to pass comment but for example, if I was playing for a club where I would be the captain,in front of a support who idolised me and the club was world famous and with loads of potential and I was earning say £20k per week or £1million annually. Now say another club comes along and offers £30k.Ok my earnings go up 50% but does my happiness and job satisfaction?I can still have a bloody good living on 20K and how much can one spend anyway.
Anyway,my musings for what they are worth. On a smaller scale I suppose I can comment since I gave up a lucrative career in finance to do a job I really enjoy for more than half the salary.

Paul I agree I dont think Sunday will be a stroll in the park. Falkirk have done well this year in the big games and they also have pedro moutinho, who i am told was one of their better players last year, on the way back. The one thing I would say though is when we played them in the cup this year they coped quite well defending deep but they struggled when big john came on with his phsyical presence. Our injury problems may turn out to our advantage on Sunday as I'm sure Chris and John will cause problems to any defence that wants to sit deep.

    Anyway-

    RANT TIME-

It really, really disapoints me when I come on to CQN and find posters giving out stick to an ex-Celtic player-Liam Miller.

This young lad left his home in Ireland to come and play for Celtic when he was just 16years old.

Through a combination of injuries and loan spells at Aarhus in Denmark he didn,t force his way into the Celtic 1st team squad until he was 22 years old.

After his storming appearances for Celtic in the Champions League-
he was offered a new contract at Celtic and refused.

He took up his right to move to Manchester United on a "bosman" and in d
