Press Conference update- Petrov wants to stay at Celtic- Strachan likes to vary style

I really do not like ‘wee games’ after a big victory. Remember when we played Hibs at home in April?

After reaching the top of the league for the first time last weekend, Celtic face the potential banana skin away to Falkirk on Sunday.

Falkirk results and performances have been variable this season, but they have perfected the art of defending deep and playing on the break. They enjoyed a second half lead on both occasions they visited Celtic Park this season, and made Celtic look pedestrian each time.

With Falkirk having already taken points from Hearts and Rangers this season, and I see no room for complacency from Celtic.

Injuries are such, that for the first time this season, the Celtic starting eleven should be predictable enough. With important games to come this month, the absence of Zurawski and Beattie – our two most mobile strikers – will have an impact on our attacking options.

Gordon Strachan said his players had “done astonishingly well” to help win him the Manager of the Month award for October. “A lot of managers deserve a pat on the back to make this league as good as it is”.

Lets hope that John Hughes is not a front runner for the November award.

Strachan also talked about variety of style being important. “If you just play the one style other teams will know how to defend against you. You need to vary you style.”

Interestingly, the manager gave the players time off this week ahead of the international travel many will make next week.

Stillian Petrov, who was Player of the Month for October, was remarkably candid on his desire to stay at Celtic: “I am not bothered by interest from other clubs; I just want to make these fans happy

“I have had talks with Celtic and plan to have more.

“In a couple of months you will know what will happen….. I would be very happy to stay”.

I am delighted to hear this from Stan.

He is a player at the peak of his career who will have options to move to other leagues. Every time I hear a player say they want to stay at Celtic now, I think back to Peter Lawwell’s comment at the EGM: “Players say they want to stay at Celtic, but they should add ‘only if the money is right’”.

Lets hope a deal is done.

    Guys, if you ain't fast...

Here's hoping Stan realises that we were the team who gave him his chance at the big time, and repays us by inking a new deal at his current rate... perhaps a clause or two that would entitle him to a big bonus dependant on success or the league we're playing in!

just an idea and then I'll leave you alone
why not set CQN up as a company - a charity and advertise the full time job that needs to be done in the appropriate manner salary etc
I'm sure the right person could be recruited to take over the ever increasing duties and help see your plans come to fruition.
with all the business acumen of the people on this site I am sure there would be no huge challenge in finding imaginitive and non obtrusive ways of funding such a position and way forward.
Perhaps if people were willing to forward thier cv's to you, you could pick a few of the people with the necessary tools to see this through - accountancy - legal-marketing etc
As you can tell by my increasing length of posts we have now reached the other area outside food and Celtic in which I am passionate -Enterprise!!

    Martinobhoy, (from previous blog)

Whilst not strictly speaking part of the bet, I will gladly donate the money to charity this weekend. This act will be witnessed by Baldymeister.

Anyway, Petrov..... If he says he wants to stay? who are the club to argue? Pay him an accepatble wage (to all parties) and we've got someone to build a team around for the next five years.

Congratulations to WGS and Stan. And never a truer word was said re: big game rebound. Every game is a must win for us, we all know that, we demand or at least would like to, but this is the sort of banana skin game we cannot afford to lose.

    Hallelujah!!

And Paul I listened to the Brain Quinn audio last night at home. Just like every one else on here - great piece of work that is much appreciated. Well done.

....ahem! That's what I was saying last night.

Last season we had become too predictable. The opposistion would simply cut out the long ball and we were screwed.

By adding more dimensions to our play, the team can interchange styles depending on the quality of opposisition or the way the game is panning out.

This dosen't give the other team a minute and any lapses in concentration will be punished.

But it could be little confusing for our players too. They need to work at this in training all the time and recent performances show that they have been.

    Well Done Guys!

The bhoy with… it is all about pace here at Celtic Quick News. As Nickhealy so profoundly opined: “whoo hoo”.

Whitedoghunch, not sure at all about recruiting someone for CQN.

I am firmly of the belief that there are only two things in business that cause real problems; staff and customers.

I think that CQN could do with some formalisation, but staffing would not work.

Thanks Martinobhoy. I hope that BQ gets a chance to see the positive feedback he has received since yesterday.

    Paul,

As you know, I've been an avid reader of this site ever since I discovered it. It was suggested last season that a way to help you out might be to have people contribute a small amount of money to it. I would rather have that and keep it in true Celtic hands rather than have advertising which might compromise that.

Before we get to the weekend's game, weren't you promising us great info from Govan this week? Have the MIH's accounts not been published.

I'm glad you recognise that we've lost our pace without Magic or Beattie. i don't know if it will matter too much against Falkirk but having watched both their matches at Parkhead, we need to realise we'll be in a game. I would put Maloney up front with Sutton and bring in Pearson, if he's fit. Your own idol, Thompson I would leave on the bench with Hartson and see if they can add anything in the last quarter. Oh, and I think Agathe needs to be given a run in place of Telfer. We'll need his pace against Rangers.

Long may this site continue, Paul. A true island of sanity (most of the time).

By the way, can I send in my chaeque for the new shares now or do I have to wait until after the EGM?

Well, this is us about to commence possibly the most important month of our season. I reckon if we come out of November unbeaten, or better still with 4 victories out of 4, we'll have taken the first major step towards getting the title back. Looking ahead to December, we've got an equally tough run of it - Aberdeen away, Hibs home, ICT away, Livi home then Hearts away on New Years Day. Best take it game by game though, starting with Sunday!

Interesting to hear that Magic is back training - I hadn't heard this at all. Hope it's true! If so, it could be a huge boost for the Old Firm games, even if he's on the benh for the first one.

Just noticed Liam Miller has signed on loan with Leeds till January. I know not everyone likes him, but I'd definitely try to sign him back - I think he'd be the perfect replacement for Lennon, and he'd fit perfectly into our current set up. Imagine both him and Petrov making runs forward beyond the strikers - it'd really add an edge to ou midfield. We could do a lot worse.

  • At 04/11/05 15:03, Blogger thismancraig said…

Interesting on Miller - read a report that they thought he was too slow to make it at the top level.

Can't say I'm too disapointed for him - ultimately he played about 20 games for us.

Great news on the newly dapper Zurawski and on Pearson (who is fit)

If magic is back training i think WGS will use him in the first Rangers match at full tilt for about an hour.

By the second game he should be a good bit fitter.

The board isn't alone with their new plan.WGS you can bet also has a plan,in this instance to do with unleashing magic on our adversaries from the west.

I know whoever invented customers and staff should be ashamed at the way they perform.
I really meant a simple one suitable person working through the mechanics of your plan under your guidance.
Scottish Enterprise has a scheme graduates into business where they provide people from all fields and have a dedicated team that make sure they perform the task they are allocated-this can last a few months or a few years.
    enough enough

As I said in the previous post, lets get tight to Latapy on Sunday as he gets everything moving for them. If he is taken care of then we should win comfortably. Maybe tie a packet of B&H from the tunnel, he'll be off like a shot when he sees it.

I think you are saying that as there are only 15 T's left, it is easier for you to continue doing it yourself. On top of everything else. But if you decide to market anything else please let me know. I'm registered with PayPay and using eBay could be a sensible option.

In this case the logistics have beaten us but I'm glad we've raised the issue of how you / we manage the rapid development of CQN. It would be interesting to hear more from you on this topic.

He has gone the way of many 'young starlets' who started to believe their own press. I hope he and his agent are happy with his chosen career path.

............not so much a burning issue/insightful critique/ whatever, more of a ramble this one..............

The 'skorrie´s now back in residence in Rio (de Janeiro) and regularly watches the fitba here. Last night it was Palmeiras v Flamengo.

Now. For those of you who don't know - Flamengo (Clube Regatta do Flamengo as they're officially known. Or CFR as it is on their club badge, which is vitually identical to a rearrangement of these tainted letters. Need I write more on why they're a loathsome mob?) are struggling to avoid relegation. Last night it was a backs to the wall, blood and snot, end to end saga which saw them steal a 1-0 victory. What's this to do with us? I hear you read.

Welllll, Palmerias's "creative midfield brain" (OK, OK I watched in the pub. That's what the bloke next to me called him) is Juninho. Just thought I'd let you know that apart from diligently whining at every decision/lost ball. He disappeared as soon as it was obvious that 'mengo were not going to lie down. Funny that, eh?

Another hooped offcast down here is Scihiedt, who is playing centre half at Botafogo (my adopted team - the Partick Thistle of Rio). Seems like the big galoot is actually holding it together well for them (still as stecky as an arthritic man going to an arthritis conference on St Arthritis's Day).

Flamengo v Botafogo this Sunday so (if anybody's intrested) I'll maybe post more on that one next week.

From what I gather the intention is that Magic will make his comeback in the league game against the huns. He has just resumed light training and will make a reserve appearance or 2 before being thrown to the wolves(or the gers if you will).

I've said it before and I will say it again, but the issue of whether Stan stays and becomes true Hoops legend is down to him. As long as he is not offered a deal which is completely derisory compared to the wages of some who are contributing far less than he does to 1st team matters, or his mentor Stoitchkov doesn't try and engineer a move for his Gholden Bhoy to his old chums at Barca.

For the record I believe Stan to be a complete family man in the Henke mould-if the wife and wean are happy then he is also a happy chappy! If for some reason he is unhappy and does not want to stay then the whole issue of 'sustainability' comes into play. We would simply have to sell him to the highest bidder(stick yer 3M up yer erchie, Mark Hughes). I pray this won't be the case.

A few bloggers have previously stated this Sunday's tricky game at Jellystone Park(Yogi's hoose!) as a potential 'banana skin'.
This reminds me of a great quote from Rambo McInally regarding a hazardous FA cup tie for Liverpool at Burnley/Barnsley or somewhere:
"That's a banana skin waiting to happen, that one!".

    Hail hail to all

    Paul

Congratulations on the great artcile yesterday- a good read/listen indeed......shame about BIG JOE breaking the site ...lets hope Mr BQ attempted to post so he had access to the subsequent posts...

    On the interview:

Although MR BQ didnt say too many surprising things the biggest postive is that he and the club are recognising that the direct method of communication is more effective than the diluted advertising led version of the tabloid press...lets hope the communication continues after the share offering has passed..PL next please

    On the share offering:

    A few points;

The move to aim will reduce reporting requirements ever so slightly and the marketability of the shares will remain roughly the same, the real reason is that there is an added tax incentive for AIM investors...I wonder if DD considered this ;-)

    My worry is that DD will probably own 49% of the club after the issue- a couple of questions on this;

I know DD will have permission to hold 49% of shares without having to make an offer for the rest of the club, but once his pref shares are converted will he have to seek permission again as he will have an even greater margin or is there flexibility within the egm motion?

Does DD holding 49% not go against what Fergus wanted?

Were they not able to provide an alternative underwriter?

In addition, DD having this many shares leaves us more open to a takeover..if DD takes a hissy fit with the fans again and throws his toys out of the pram...

Lets all dig deep and limit DD's shareholding...

    On the subject of communication:

I must pass on some congratulations to the PLC for the redesign of the website (at long last) and also the increasing use of freevideo links on the site....they seem to be finally realising that the site is a shop window and it is important to drive more traffic to it.....

I still cant see the sixtee7.com t-shirts on their site though ;-)

    On other matters Celtica:

Always good to hear from the press conference....when will we see that CQN microphone in front of Gordon for our weekly report?

    On the stan front:

Lets hope Stan doesnt have to wait two months for that suitable offer to come through....as Ive said before he is the first man down on the teamsheet...

    On the t-shirt front:

A wee suggestion...why dont you add a few pounds on to the price of each tee and any profits made can be retained for the maintenance of the site.....providing a sustainable future for the CQN movement...

    Parkheadcomesalford, I hear your comments.

I’ve not asked about MIH this week (eye’s elsewhere).

Not sure when you can send your money in for shares, have you seen the size of the prospectus? About ½ an inch.

    Kojo, thanks for your comment.

I was v impressed by the feedback BQ received, even from those such as Neg Anon, who have made their views clear in the past.

The verdict was unanimous; I hope he gets the chance to read his reviews on this occasion.

Thanks Rumoid, yes, DD will need to seek permission again to waive the takeover bid for the company in 2007. I understand this is the plan.

I have been recording the press conferences for some time now, but the bloggers ‘fleet of foot’ might have stepped on a few toes at C67.

There is also the bandwidth question.

And more; you would not believe some of the questions. Painful in the extreme.

"I am firmly of the belief that there are only two things in business that cause real problems; staff and customers."

Damn shame that it's the same two resources that make it successful... You can't ever win can you?

Worry about where the goals will come from if Sutton and Hartson start up front; both seem to have lost their scoring touch in the last few games.

Paul67 - I also have the prospectus. If you think it's half an inch thick, then you must be kidding Mrs67 in another department ;-D

Listened to the interview last night - great work. Also managed to catch the Fergus interview - he was much maligned in the past, but achieved everything he said he would. I'm sure I still have the letter from him when he was based in Canada and had formed a company called Firstgreen - a true visionary (and shrewd businessman).

We should recognise 'The man who saved Celtic' - maybe a campaign through CQN for a statue in the same way as NTV did for Big Jock 10-15 years ago.

Thoughts? Kojo - interested in your take on this too.

Celtic's Under-19s beat Hearts 3-0 at Barrowfield today. I'd love to tell you the scorers but I'm worried that my eyes were playing tricks on me. Marc Miller definitely got the first from close range after a vicious inswinging corner from Ryan Conroy, and Paul McGowan tapped in the third thanks to great set-up play by Simon Ferry.
But at the second, I was sure McGowan robbed the keeper and laid the ball back for Jim O'Brien to lob into the net. But the official website has it the other way round.
Was anyone else at the game? I was behind the goal at the other end and my eyesight's not brilliant. Help me out here, gonnae!
As for the match, the outstanding player by far was Simon Ferry. Imagine the work rate and tackling of Neil Lennon welded on to the attacking flair of Stilian Petrov. Tasty, eh? And he's only 17. This wee lad will be a HUGE player for Ra Sellik.
Scott Fox in goal made two great saves, Scott Cuthbert was immense at centre back, the midfielders Teddy Bjarnason and Conroy are class acts and the forward line of McGowan and O'Brien gave the Jambo giants the runaround.
I'll post a fuller report tomorrow on the usual place

but even I have a social life, you know. Off to a 40th. Gawd, remember when it was all 18ths and 21st parties, all slicked-back hair, hormones and Brut aftershave?

I understand what you are saying and emotion may dictate that we open the cheque book for Stan but the key to BQ's interview with Paul was the new strategy of "sustainability"

We could (and probably will) argue here on CQN about what really is defined as sustainability but clearly the Board have now taken stock and the structure of our financial planning, debt management and strategic investment has changed and no more will we allow negotiations or external situations to force our hand.

In essence the tail will not wag the dog in the future and every move made will be in the long term interests of the club and that will apply to everyone at the club including our very best players.

I want Stan to stay and be our future leader but not at any price - let the negotiations begin and hopefully conclude with SP extending for another two or three years but if it is not to happen then let the conveyor belt of talent coming through take up the position or let our new European scouting system find the answer.

Thanks for your reply and as with Gromit-k9 I see the point entirely.

However as we are all fond of saying "If you know the history" and in my lifetime of watching the Bhoys I have seen how players feel the need to move and the magnet of Celtic and CP cannot hold them.

My all time favourite player when I started going to see Celtic was King Kenny but the club could do nothing to stop his move to Liverpool (whether it was ambition, money or a desire to try something different) nothing Celtic could do was good enough.

Within a few short years the next superstar we produced was Charlie Nicholas and he did the same to us.

I would be so sad to see Stan go and I fervently hope he stays but Celtic is the only thing that counts and if the future of our club and our movement means Stan sets his sights so high and beyond us that he forces our hand then so be it.

I am in my 40's (decrepit old senile that I am) and I am more positive and hopeful about the future of Celtic than I have been for a LONG, LONG TIME.

I think the next generation of Kenny Dalglish's, Davie Hays, Danny McGrains, George Connelly's are ready to come forward and that can only be good for all of us.

I hope Stan has the sense to see that and the good judgement to know that he has every chance of being the fulcrum for that next generation to develop.

And anyway let's be honest he will still be extremely well paid - Celtic may not be the highest payers in the UK but we are up there so whatever happens we are hardly going to leave Stan or any other player for that matter in a state of destitution.

I wouldn't be surprised if Petrov becoming Captain is something that WGS will use as an incentive for Stan to stay put.

He was in the papers this week saying how badly he wanted to win the SPL for Lenny's sake after the blow of going out of Europe in his first game as Captain.

I think it was genuine reverence offered from Stan to Lenny and highlighted a few things; his admiration of Lenny, team camaraderie, his love of Celtic, his suitability for the Captain role. Lets give Lenny his season though the Bhoy deserves to be remembered as a good Celtic captain and stalwart.

    If Stan is the same guy that is his pulic persona then I'm sure if WGS is saying to him;

    1. Your playing in the middle in your favoured position
    2. Youve replaced Henk as far as adulation is concerned.
    3. We're going to build a team around you
    4. Were going to make you Captain
    5. Your going to get an increased salary and obviously (see 1-4) a long term contract.

Then the issue of money should not come into it but ambition only. If he chooses anywhere else he might be heading for a stint at left back again and he would be turning his back on a lot.

Celtic will get it sorted without resorting to BoboBaldesque contract conditions. We certainly shouldn't be building a team around a mercenary. He is also only four years away from a testimonial. We will see the best of Stan and hopefully we can offer him a strong challenge and the chance to become a household name across Europe.

    Hail Hail

Agree Shamrock.I have always found it strange that a player would move for money alone.Since I will never come close to that earning potential perhaps I am not qualified to pass comment but for example, if I was playing for a club where I would be the captain,in front of a support who idolised me and the club was world famous and with loads of potential and I was earning say £20k per week or £1million annually. Now say another club comes along and offers £30k.Ok my earnings go up 50% but does my happiness and job satisfaction?I can still have a bloody good living on 20K and how much can one spend anyway.
Anyway,my musings for what they are worth. On a smaller scale I suppose I can comment since I gave up a lucrative career in finance to do a job I really enjoy for more than half the salary.

Paul I agree I dont think Sunday will be a stroll in the park. Falkirk have done well this year in the big games and they also have pedro moutinho, who i am told was one of their better players last year, on the way back. The one thing I would say though is when we played them in the cup this year they coped quite well defending deep but they struggled when big john came on with his phsyical presence. Our injury problems may turn out to our advantage on Sunday as I'm sure Chris and John will cause problems to any defence that wants to sit deep.

    Anyway-

    RANT TIME-

It really, really disapoints me when I come on to CQN and find posters giving out stick to an ex-Celtic player-Liam Miller.

This young lad left his home in Ireland to come and play for Celtic when he was just 16years old.

Through a combination of injuries and loan spells at Aarhus in Denmark he didn,t force his way into the Celtic 1st team squad until he was 22 years old.

After his storming appearances for Celtic in the Champions League-
he was offered a new contract at Celtic and refused.

He took up his right to move to Manchester United on a "bosman" and in doing so more than doubled his wages.

    Why hate him ?

The lad has had a succession of injuries and pelvic operations-
there is a fair chance that his career won,t be long term because of this.
If you had health problems and you were offered financial security would you not have done the same ?

When Liam Miller returned to Celtic Park for Jackie Mc Namaras' testimonial he was soundly booed.

I ,as a Celtic supporter, found that embarassing-as I did when Kenny Dalglish returned with Liverpool for the 1st time since leaving Celtic.
As I did when Charlie Nicholas returned with Arsenal for his 1st trip back to Paradise.
I and many others cringed when some eejits took it upon themselves to boo The Legend that is Henrik Larsson.

Young Miller provided us with some
brilliant moments and I,for one, would have him back in a minute
(pay as you play deal of course).

My last point is that after we were beaten by Hibs in the C.I.S. cup that season-the season we played Lyon in the Champions League-on the bus on the way back to Glasgow-Liam Miller was having a laugh with some of the other youngsters and Martin O'Neill stormed up-"We just got beat by Hibs -do you think its funny?Well you can F. off down to Man United then !"

    What would y o u have done ?

    Your arguements are irresistable!

The position of captain of our club is as far as i'm concerned the pinnacle,of football attainment.

To be chosen and put on a pedestal by so many adoring fans and to be heroworshipped throughout the world by millions is mind blowing.

If anyone can match that for ambition then good luck to them.

We must all play our part in getting the message over to all parties, although having heard BQ i'm convinced we are at one on this so important decision.

We have had some wonderful captains down through the years and Stan Petrov could in my eyes join that elite band of men, who have given us their all both on and off the park.

If you really have ambition then Stan,if your reading this come with us on a once in a lifetime journey.

Personally I have never had a gripe with what Liam did. I just feel he was ill advised at the time. My memories of Liam were as follows, he played a couple of great games and a few average games for Celtic. I do not think he would have made a great difference to our team last year but we'll never know.
Frankly if you don't want to play for Celtic go elsewhere. Liam Miller did exactly that and like many more before him he will fade from the memory of us the Celtic support.

    My dear friend, damonii,

Excellent... and if I may say so..... a very constructive question.

As always .... I must Preface.....

What I am about to expound is strictly my own and only my own, opinion, it is not in any way related to actual info. received in a clandestine manner.

    To Proceed:

Before we can arrive at a probable offer to Mr.Petrov that Celtic shall make.......We shall have to submit a conjecture, as to what Mr.Petrov's Current stipend may be.

From various hints and whipers..... I am of the opinion that Mr.Petrov's Current Contract dictates a WEEKLY WAGE of 16,000 Pounds.

That to be taken, as a basis of further wage negos.

The above Wage, to me ......is positively OBSCENE......

The Wage structure's of many Soccer Players, during the very recent Past... Have all been DREADFULLY... WAY WAY, DIVORCED FROM REALITY.

At the time that Mr.Petrov negotiated his present contractual income....

The sum Quoted ABOVE.......was considered almost Modest.

Naturally, when the present wage negos do take place between Celtic and His Representatives......(The KEY WORD HERE.......REPRESENTATIVES........)

Will use his present Emolument as a starting point.

Now, after what has happened in the Interim........16,000 Pounds ...is now considered to be a GENEROUS RETURN for Mr.Petrov's Services........(I Still consider the above sum......darn ridiculous)

The cost of Living is based on the Cost of Labour.

Now that the cost of Labour has diminished, owing to several economic factor...that I do not wish to expound....

A WEEKLY WAGE of 16,000 can probably cover the Expense of acquiring 2 or maybe even 3 New (And Needed) Faces in the Celtic POOL.
Times have indeed changed.......I do not wish to go too far in my examples......But REGARDEZ the Problems now being faced by the G.A.......

Because of the CONSTRICTS on their PURSESTRINGS...... Only the AVENUE OF THE DREADED BOSMAN, is open to them.

By the way ,in private, among my coterie...We refer to the Above as......
    THE BOZO SIGNINGS.

    Meanwhile, back at the Ranch....

As I mentioned earlier...... The REPRESENTATIVES of MR.PETROV will be the PRIME MOVERS in the NEGOS..

Having a tad experience in my murky and somewhat shameful past......On the ins and outs of that profession ....... I can speak with some authority on the Sentiments that will be espoused by Mr. Petrov's ADVOCATES.

Now we come to the main thrust of my expected Denouement of the situation under the Spotlight.

Celtic will....I am sure...... make an offer to increase his weekly stipend........
    But thereby hangs the tale.....

    By How Much?

    My answer.........Not VERY MUCH!

Now enter the VILLAINS of the Piece...Ya Got IT..... MR.PETROV's REPS...!

Ya just Know that they will push for a ridiculous increase......That is expected from that type of Creature....... It is in it's very Nature!(MR.Scorpion says...."I hear Ya,pal!")

Now, will Mr.Petrov obey the siren calls of his Reps, to push and push or will he remain steadfast....... And go with his heart?

That my friends I cannot answer....

But I have gone to great pains to try to enlighten you to my thesis.......

If He Stays it will be for a lot LESS in monetary return, than he could Acquire on the World Market..

That, gentlemen is tne end of my tale.

Not a very concise and precise presentation, but that's all I got folks!

Noel, agree that past players should not be jeered when they come to play against us (certain exceptions!).

Miller made a big mistake going to man u. Something the player will have to live with the rest of his life and i feel that is punishment itself.

Celtic gave him a lot and he gave us little in return.

Now i dont fault him for going to man u but he could have signed a contract and got us a few quid out of selling him.

Footballers contracts do not start and end with basic pay!

A sum over £16.000 plus all of the other enhancements, appearance image, win bonus, trophy haul and other benefits such as a testimonial for example could as a package be quite attractive.

Knowing the feeling of the support our CEO will no doubt have some form of long seeing package in mind.

Paul, (or any other of you financial wizards out there).
Regarding the impending share issue. I want to know if there will be a minimum amount that have to be bought, before you can buy any shares? I am thinking about getting my son some shares for his Christmas, (you know, framed certificate and that), but I can only spare between 50 and 100 quid. Will this amount allow to buy shares?
On Sunday's game, although things are looking up for us, I feel that some posters are already looking to the two games with our friends from the southside. For what it's worth, I don't think that we are good enough (yet) to dismiss anybody, especially away from home. We will have to be careful that we don't slip up, so a single goal victory will do for me.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with my query. HAIL! HAIL!

Pretty gruesome reading don,t you think?

    Supercelt -

you are correct-I dont think any ex- Celtic players should be booed.

Shelbourne-Do you think it was Liam Millers intention to be injured?

Would you boo Alan Stubbs if he returned to Celtic Park? After all Celtic nursed him through his cancer operations ,gave him a new contract then he left on a bosman.

George-yes, Millers memory in the 1st team will be a fleeting one but will you forget his performances against Lyon and Anderlecht?

It said everything except armed struggle!

When Liam Miller made the impact he did we were ready for another hero and he above all else seemed to fit the bill.

Not long before he left the club he was sitting immediately in front of me at a match.

At half time he was mobbed by fans wanting photos and autographs.Poor lad couldn't move.

I can therefore understand the feelings of those supporters who again felt as if they had been kicked in the stomach when he left.

    However,i will repeat.

    My dear friend, geo412,

    Fair Question,pal........

As before I shall Preface my answer.....

    But this time,somewhat differently...

My answer IS based on... up until now...... CLANDESTINE and Inside info........

    To tease a little....

What would you guesstimate a fair return for the Services of the MAGNIFICENT MR. MAGIC?

    Whatever you said.......

    You are so wrongo!!

As I mentioned in my last submission......TIMES IN THE SOCCER MARKET PLACE HAVE CHANGED!

I believe that MAGIC was acquired for the insignificant sum of 2.8 Million Pounds.....

A PALTRY, PALTRY SUM vis a vis , yesterday's explosively expensive TRANSFER MARKET ....

And this Previously regarded as a CHICKEN FEED SUM.... was all it cost CELTIC to acquire....What many consider to be ......
THE FINEST GOAL SCORING PROSPECT in all of POLAND!

Yes,Babe..a penny goes a lot further than a shilling once did!

Keeping all what I have Posited in Mind....... MONSIEUR Lavalle has now been added to the Celtic NEGO TEAM......... AND this GUY ....He takes no ifs, ands or GUFFS....during his HARD NOSED TETE A TETES, with The already Identified SCORPIONS!

    Back to Maverick........

So ya just know that MR. MAGIC is on Reasonable OH! so Reasonable Wages......

His Base is in the Neighborhood of 5,000 Pounds...... With of course Incentives added........those being in the nature of More than Satisfactory Performance, Win Bonuses, International Appearance Money and all round Success achieved by a winning Celtic Eleven.....

So to round off a figure, which will be arrived at.......all things being achieved.......

His CHECK CHECKS in, at 9,000 Pounds, give or take Laundry expenses..........!

    My opinion....

    Honest?

The "GOLDILOCKS SYNDROME".... of which I am a fervent proposer.........in all negos.

noel90, you may say I am in denial but I will argue until I'm blue in the face that The King was not booed during the Barca game.

There was widespread booing when he came on, but that was for Ronaldinho, whom Henrik replaced.

Indeed, if ever he was going to be booed, it was when he scored. To my memory that was followed by deathly silence, not booing.

Liam Miller gave Celtic very, very little in return for what Celtic gave him.

He showed very little loyalty. He was offerred a very lucrative package to stay with Celtic, but chose to chase even more money and gave little thought to what he may have owed the Celtic youth development team and backroom staff who helped him develop and recover from his long term injury.

I wish him no harm, but he hurt us a team at a time when we needed fresh talent in midfield. I would not welcome him back.

There is no comparison with Dalglish or Stubbs - they gave us years of service and league titles - Miller gave us a handful of performances.

He is reaping financially what he sowed - but he will repent at leasure for the void he has created in his career as a result of a poor decision. I suspect he will realise eventually, as most do, that the grass is seldom greener than at Celtic Park.

having watched the UEFA Cup games at half empty stadiums last night I can only wonder what might have been for us in Europe this season. I'm happy with the way things are going at the club and have got over the Bratislava debacle but not having Euro football is a bit strange after what we were used to and still hurts a little. but my point is this. having finished 2nd in the league we qualified for the Champions League qualifiers and as we know we were eliminated from them in mid july. so why were we not allowed as Scottish Cup winners to take up our place in the UEFA Cup since one avenue was closed to us. you may say that it is unfair and we are just being greedy and yes we would have been but when a club has success you are rewarded for it. we were successful last season so we deserved the reward. Dundee Utd did not win the Scottish Cup yet basically wasted a place for a Scottish club when they were allowed enter. having not even finished in the top 6 they were never going to do anything. as a result scotland has 1 team in Europe. while some may find this opinion controversial look at the facts. everyone would win, Celtic fans would have euro football, the club could make money, players would pit their wits against some quality opposition, UEFA would love to see us involved in the competion as we single handedly reinvigorated the appeal and status of the competition in 2002/3. scotland would gain valuable co-efficient points to keep up the number of places available to the clubs. the only one's who wouldn't win would be Dundee Utd, but they didn't win the Scottish Cup so in my mind they don't deserve to!

All this talk of Miller is academic. Why would we want him ?Based on the relatively few good games he played for Celtic and those games where I have seen him in a red shirt I just don't think he is good enough to play for Celtic now, never mind be a replacement for Stan. Anyway, I always found him infuriating to watch with his propensity for running up the back of opponents giving away needless fouls. No thanks I say.

Until something happens - you're right, this is academic. However, LM was easily one of the best YOUNG talents I've seen at CP in the last 30+ years.

I was as pi$$ed as anyone when he left - especially as we supported him during injury. BUT, he has class and I believe that going to Man Utd when he did was a huge mistake.

We've all made them though, and I'm sure he would acknowledge his (privately).

I would take him back in a minute ...... at the right cost!

Jeromek67 - to get any special character like that you can (if using Windows) click
Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map
and then click on whichever character you want to see more detail on. At the bottom right of the new window it should say (in this case) Alt+0233
meaning that you can hold the Alt key on your keyboard and type that number on the keypad (rather than the numbers above the "qwerty" keys).

Or you can just copy and paste it from San-Fran's post.

In brief - I'm with noel90. I'd have Miller back if it benefitted the team and he improved the first team (not just squad). I have no issue with him having left before and I wouldn't risk having a weaker squad just to continue a huff with an ex-player.

For the Falkirk game I'll accept any win but would predict either 3-0 or 4-2 to us. I'd be surprised, right enough, to lose 2 goals to them. A 3-0 win with us tending to play within ourselves rather than dominate.
    Over and out...

Right from the get go......I suspect an Emminence Grise....was at work, lurking in the shadows.

    Put your own self in.......

    Na~ I cannot ask a stupid question.......

Hmmm, I've got 1-4 in my predictor this week, but I might change it after I see saturdays results (psychological effect of other scores may change my outlook!) and my 3 week old nephew (nephewbenCC) has a 0-3 to Celtic!

Going on previous games against Falkirk, there is every chance they will score first again (on the counter attack), but the difference is that we can expect to outscore anyone now, and we are playing better footy than the last 2 times we played them.

If the super hoops get an early goal I'd expect at least another 3, no matter what the score is I can see us battering at the door relentlessly for 90 mins!

How about this for your coupon then...

1-4, Hartson FGS, in the first ten minutes

(the odds on that are only 37/1 believe it or not! - not including the minutes though)

At the end of the weekend though, I dont care if I'm wring, as long as win we will be in our rightful position!

The Blessed Martin warned him of the dangers of going south to Old Trafford but the bold lad would not listen.

Now after 18 months or so away and virtually no first team football in that period it has all gone sour and he is being farmed out on loan to try and get him a game.

What kind of physical and mental state must he be in given that he can't even get on the bench for the worst, p**s poor Man Utd team in 10 or 15 years.

I think we need to move on and forget Liam Miller not out of spite or revenge but because we can get somone better from our reserve pool (Paul Lawson) or we can source better from abroad.

Liam son, you had your chance, you had great advice from a wise head (MON) to stay and play for the best fans in the world - we would be willing you to great things and yet you turned your back on it - you live with that and the rest of us will "Walk On"

Liam Miller = Franny Jeffers as far as I'm concerned. He had a lot of promise and in pursuing money before improvement has squandered his talent.
He's one of these guys who will be a self-fufilling prophecy. Because he's got Celtic and Man Utd on his CV - there will always be teams lining up to line his pockets and they will all be dissapointed in the long run. The lad's cashed in and good luck to him - he'll be able to llok back on a career full of signing on fees but no medals. His Choice. Not mine and therefore I would not hope to see him return. He's been overtaken by guys with different values who will ultimately reap greater reward both financially and in acheivement. Guys like Maloney who have stayed the course - kept the head down when it got tough, ignored cash when it would have been easy to 'sell out' and has, as a consequence, come of age with the world at his feet.

Very well said, just what I was thinking!

can you imaagine what it would do to the confidence of Lawson etc if he was to come back? I think alot of our current young crop would be pissed off severely.

Conversley, Craig Beattie should get credit for singing his new deal, he could have went to spurs for the green, and he wasnt even a Celtic man! (he certainly is now!)

    Big Liam:

Petrov to score anytime is 2/1, with all the hype around him just now, theres another good bet for ya!

You are right about good counsel

And I am sure our friend Kojo is also spot on about the seductions placed by Man Utd in front of Liam Miller and his family.

I pity the poor lad because that seduction has led him up a dark, dead-end alley (sorry for coming on all Dashiel Hammett here)

The power of persuasion of the the Govan Knight has led our lad astray and his price for supping with that particular red devil is to descend in to anonymity.

The best counsel he could have taken was with the wise old owl of Kilrea who told him to stay at CP for another couple of years and find his feet, and then the world would truly be at his feet.

If Liam Miller and his poor advisors had listended to MON rather than the tripe emanating from Manchester he would now be the first name on the Celtic team sheet

I pity the lad in some ways but if Kojo is correct he has plenty of shekels every week to console him but he truly lost Paradise in that move. (apologies to Milton for that)

    International keyboard (Win XP)
Open your Control Panel (via Start menu or My Computer)
Double click Regional and Language Options
    Click Languages
    Click Details
    Click Add
Pick English (United States - International)
This method has the advantage of maintaining the QWERTY layout, with the following changes:

To type accent grave (à, è, etc.), type ` then the vowel.
Accent aigu (é), type ' (single quote) then e.
    Cédille (ç), type ' then c.
    Circonflexe (ê), type ^ (shift + 6) then e (or another vowel).
    Tréma (ö), type " (shift + ') then o.

To type any of these symbols by themselves (e.g., single or double quotes) rather than above a vowel, type the symbol then hit the space bar.

To type French quotation marks « » use ctrl + alt + [ and ], respectively.
The minor disadvantage of the international keyboard is that it takes a little while to get used to typing a space when you actually want to type ' or ".

International keyboard (Win 95, 98, ME, NT)
Open your Control Panel (via Start menu or My Computer)
    Double click Keyboard
    Click Language
Click Properties, Settings, or Details (whichever you see)
    Click Add
Pick English (International or United States International)
    Continue as above.
    International keyboard (Win 2000)

Open your Control Panel (via Start menu or My Computer)
    Double click Keyboard
    Click Input Locales
    Click Change
    Click Add
Pick English International or United States International
    Continue as above.

    French keyboard
Follow the instructions above but pick French (Standard)
Switch between the English and French layouts with Alt + shift.
NOTE: The layout of the French keyboard, known as AZERTY, is somewhat different than the layouts of other keyboards - refer to the map of the French keyboard.
HINT: You can invoke the Windows On Screen Keyboard - go to Programs/Accessories/Accessibility/On Screen Keyboard. When you change to the AZERTY keyboard and move your cursor over the on screen keyboard, it will display the AZERTY layout. You can then type the accented letters by clicking on the On Screen Keyboard. After pressing ALT/SHIFT you can then continue typing in QWERTY on the real keyboard.

Big Liam and CC The Boxer

Picking upi on both your posts from earlier I also believe BBJ will touch the magic "ton" on Sunday

This season he has driven me crazy with his lack of movement or anticipation of the way the build-up is happenning but I still want the Big Man to stay and I hope number 100 comes up Sunday.

Now - I want 101, 102 and 103 on Wednesday - just to rub it right in to TFOD, then perhaps the media will focus on the other side of BBJ and that is when he puts his mind to it he is a brilliant goal-scorer

WGS - quick note, since this is November 5th weekend can you purchase or even borrow a rocket and send it in the direction of BBJ's a**e because when the Big Man does get a jolt from time to time he tends to come out and play a blinder and as of Sunday I want him to play the best he ever has for the next few games.

    Hi Paul,
Shamrockdiary 12.51 :- You may well be right when you say that Mr Hartson will reach three figures against Falkirk he is a better striker than given credit for at times, I do feel though that you may be a touch optimistic in hoping for a further three on Wed night. This has been a poor season for the Rangers Defence, but there are two considerations, firstly the return of Mr Kloss, while he may be slightly rusty he inspires and organises his defence, the second point, if as speculated on here the Celtic front two are Hatson/Sutton then that is the combination the Rangers defence was set up to counter, two big hard strikers. I can see a game with Celtic having most possession, the bulk of the attacking yet failing to net, the longer you go without a score in those circumstances the more open you leave yourself to a counterattacking goal.

Some People seem to like strachans banter towards interviews, im still not sure, its a fine line between sounding clever and sounding like a prat. Heres a few of strachans past comments. Enjoy

Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are the right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No. I was asked if I thought I was the right man for the job and I said, "No, I think they should have got George Graham because I'm useless."

Reporter: Is that your best start to a season?
Strachan: Well I've still got a job so it's far better than the Coventry one, that's for sure.

Reporter: Are you getting where you want to be with this team?
Strachan: We're not doing bad. What do you expect us to be like? We were eighth in the league last year, in the cup final and we got into Europe. I don't know where you expect me to get to. Do you expect us to win the Champions League?

Reporter: Gordon, you must be delighted with that result?
Strachan: You're spot on! You can read me like a book.

Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a yogurt to finish by today, the expiry date is today. That can be my priority rather than Agustin Delgado.

Reporter: This might sound like a daft question, but you'll be happy to get your first win under your belt, won't you?
Strachan: You're right. It is a daft question. I'm not even going to bother answering that one. It is a daft question, you're spot on there.

Reporter: Bang, there goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home, become an alcoholic and maybe jump of a bridge. Umm, I think I can take it, yeah.

Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here. I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick, down negative man, down.

Reporter: Where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret.

Reporter: You don't take losing lightly, do you Gordon?
Strachan: I don't take stupid comments lightly either.

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesbrough were better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there...

There's an awful lot more than that to Gordon Strachan. I could add quite a bit to those quotes. The quotes in question have been doing the rounds since last summer.

On Liam Miller I agree entirely with the points of view raised here which argue that he damaged his career, probably irrepairably, by leaving when he did.

I dont think on current form that he would get a game for us at the minute and also resigning him would definitely send out the wrong signals to the youth players coming through.

p.s. If we were offered somewhere in the region of £10 million plus for Stan does anyone really think we would keep him

If he had stayed for 3 more years and gained the vital experience at a HUGE club, then he would be ready for the step down to Manchester.

Regards Liam Miller, in the short time he was available for the first team he did tremedously well. With the benefit of hindsight I am sure he will agree he / his family / advisers made the wrong choice such is life. On a return to Celtic, I think not, very rarely works out returning to past glories. We must take players such as Maloney / McGeady / Gardyne / McGlinchey & Ferry into consideration as they will all be bidding for first team positions in the not to distant future - therefore simply no room at the inn for Mr. Miller.

Regards Stan Petrov, I always find it strange that discussions about new contracts include personal details of his weekly wages, even estimates. While I accept they are in the public eye, we don't talk about how much Chick Young, Gerry McEejit or Fat DJ get and they are also in the public eye. Suffice to say, playing football is like any other walk of life, if a mechanic gets a better offer he will give it due consideration with all other factors, but away from the back pages.

Having a basic £ 5k per week with high incentives / bonuses, makes a lot of sense. We have all seen squad "deadwood" players happy to sit in and count their money for doing practically nothing. Can only be good for the club / fans if player earnings are incentive driven.

    Guys

Not sure at all about the Liam Miller thing.

I had to give up last night due to too much alcohol and sleep deprivation but I think we should forget taking him back

There have been surprisingly few good returns to the club from players who have tasted life down south or perhaps abroad.

Bertie Auld came back to the club twice and on his third time round was sensational for the Bhoys but he is about the only one I remember

Charlie Nick, Andy walker and Frank McAvennie never really lit the place up on their second terms although they had occasional good games

I realise that Liam Miller would be considered different in that he is still a young man and would be returning in his mid 20's instead of the early 30's like the guys above but I still don't see it being good for the club

am i alone in thinking that the only hack who dared speak out against tfod and their wily ways has gone a tad subdued recently. Mr Spiers scribblings since the mints boycott rant seem to be confined to the "lay off Eck coz he's a diamond geezer "variety.Oh well it's down to Glen Gibbons now for a fair shout.

Some very interesting views on Liam Miller. I personally would love to have back the Liam Miller of late 2003, but would that be what we would be getting?
I don't think Miller was the villain of the piece when he left us. He may have grown up a Celtic supporter, but like the majority of Irish Celtic supporters I have known (but by no means all)he also had a favourite English team - Man Utd. That really means that Utd were his "important" team, while he also had a sentimental attachment to Celtic, bless 'em, who only play in the Scottish league, meaning they are not so important.
Miller must have felt like Superman around December '03. He was playing superbly well and had had a great influence and scored vital goals in the Champs League. He must have felt like he could go on to be a real world beater, and where better to do it than with your "real" boyhood heroes? His head was turned by Fergie who must have known that Miller would not walk into his team, but did he tell him that?
Fergie took away the best player to come through our youth system in a generation for nothing (in more than one sense of the word). He also took away the most vital phase of Miller's career. We lost out; Miller lost out in ways more important than financial.
He is still in his mid-20's and should be approaching his peak. If he can show at Leeds that he can be a player again, I would hope we would not hold what happened before against him. There may though be other reasons why we shouldn't have him back.

Well done on the BQ interview Paul....a real sterling effort!

If I can put forward one simple reason why young Mr. Miller shouldn't come back...we would have to pay for him!

Purely academic as it's never on the cards anyway.
