Not long in from the game after a couple of celebratory refreshments.
Let's see now, we had:
A 30 yard screamer from Maloney
An own goal by Klos
Kyrgiakos sent off for criminal stupidity
Celtic not even having to approach their best to win due to the feckless, gutless display by TFOD
And about 1,000 extra fiends inside the ground on fake tickets get to witness it all!
All in all, a very satisfying evening!
Eck must stay - has he won a trophy that we didn't hand him on a plate? Em...no.
Hail Hail

As usual you have capyured the essence of what happenned.
Well said
And by the way did you capture a few minutes with Fargo before he went underground again?
-
Ooops
Sorry JohnBhoy, Noel et al..
That was enirely unintentional.

Thanks Shamrock Diary. No, I must have missed Fargo, unfortunately. I trust he enjoyed his evening.
There have been 350 comments since I left the house and I have not read one of them.
Fourth in the SPL
your Fourth in the SPL
your Fourth in the SPL
your Fourth in the S.P.L.
To bed with a smile.

Senor Pablo
Do not apologise - enjoy this along with a superb victory tonight.
We are all with each other on CQN (well I think we are) but never more so than when we put TFOD in their place as we did tonight.
Good on you mate!
-
Paul
A good summation of tonight but would rather this was how it was on the 19th in the SPL
Long live Big Eck for me. The longer he lasts the better for us even if he manages to get worst Ran*ers team to 2nd Phase CL it will do us some good for next year's groups
But again dont write them off till May as they will still be sniping around the fringes
-
Oh yer no laughing noo
But we are at YOU!
The worst MURRAY XI ever assembled!
Big Eck has now created two of the worst gers teams in history with this one even worst than Capucho and Egil something of two years ago.
Lets not get too carried away we were far from great tonight.
Early on we were being pushed off the ball all over the park.
Telfer got into four or five great crossing positions but failed to deliver every time. And up front we never really got the best out of Hartson and goal hero Maloney.
However if we continue to improve there will be no stopping us.
McManus and Lennon were excellent.
And Gordon Strachan is due a lot of credit also.
Hail Hail

Paul67, agree with just about everything you said after the game. The next game can't come fast enough now!
I didn't hear the Ferguson interview so interested to read those comments.
Would disagree with you on the "two bad goalkeepers" though. Klos has rarely made a mistake against us...let's enjoy the exception. On that topic, isn't it great to see crosses being pumped into our box without having our hearts in our mouths!!
As soon as anyone has a link to the goals, i'd love to see them again!

I agree that the game on the 19th has always been the important one but after watching how poor TFOD are I am more confident about Saturday week.
I am not complacent - a wounded animal can always be a mighty adversary but they showed little or nothing tonight that suggests they have a masterplan for the game in 10 days time.
I only regret these bloody international games are getting in the way this weekend - it would be fantastic to be playing them on Saturday with our confidence sky high.
Still I am more looking forward to the game on the 19th than ever before and many of Paul's words here tonight have a strong resonance within that.
-
"Boogah!" as Unlucky Alf would say. Childish little game anyway. Good to see a noble Senor lead the way this time.
Paul,
Well said as regards Wee Gordon Strachan. He was brave tonight but, as military strategists will tell you, the greatest of tactical plans never survive the first contact with the enemy. The Rangers pressing (and blatant intimidation and fouling) plus the windy conditions made it hard for Celtic to settle into a silky pass-and-move routine. But we persevered, and were dominating the game before the first incredible goal.
We totally dominated the second half and would have won by more but for the usual flag-happy linesmen and BBJ's errant shooting.
The Kyrgiakos sending off and Klos's aberration at the second goal merely added to the merriment of millions and illustrated the total lack of concentration and morale in the Rangers camp.
It is quite clear McLeish is off to France to collect his P45. But will their new manager be able to believe the pile of absolute dross he has left behind?
As for Celtic, as I pointed out in graphic terms on the previous thread, we will gain confidence from this and be better next time. It will be tough on the 19th but we will prevail.
We will get better.
They can only get worse.
-
Shamorck
Our best chance of running away from them in the league is if Big Eck keeps on plodding along till at least Christmas or longer if he keeps thme in the CL. Sureley DM cant sack a man who sends the team thru to second phase of CL????
SO they finish 4th in SPL and give everyomne else a better chance at CL next year.
Cmon the Huns......
Ok CL games only

sorry cant sepll Shamrock

You nearly stole my theory on the last thread. I believe I have uncovered the mystery behind the identify of FARGO
Fargo is:
wait for it...
The one and only
Rod Stewart!
I took a few pictures with my mobile but to contest it I'd have to wait more than 14 days and pay the £60 if I lost would I not rather than pay just the £30... Talk about a money making scheme.
Forgot to say before that I heard the:
"You're forth, in the s.p.l" chant but it only lasted a few seconds and turned into "Stand up if you hate the huns!" was dissapointed.
How much would Maloney be worth if he was a young Brazilian who had just signed? That would be interesting. Congratulations to WGS, even Lenny is playing good passing football!
-
Hello, all.
Great win tonight but Rangers were truly awful and so we weren't quite as great as we looked. McGeady frustrated me just as much as he did WGS. And John Hartson looked even more immobile than ever. I think we missed Beattie in particular. £5 million for him in January? Break their arm for it.
-
£5m for BBJ, i wouldn't sell him for 5,6 or 7. He is a one off. He will never be Linford Christie, he never has been, and that should be accepted, but his goals per game ratio is excellent. Would £5m guarantee us a minimum 25 goals per season striker? No.
Ask Paolo Maldini, ask Alessandro Nesta, ask them if he is a dud, and they will tell you he is one of the most awkward players they have ever had to try to handle.
Look beyond the big frame and see the striker within.
-
Todays moment of Zen -
Hindsight can be a very an unforgiving prism when your predictions are based only on hope and prayer. Don’t want to start any agnostic chat either!!! ;) Read on McDuff.
ALEX McLEISH last night lit the blue-touch paper on tonight's explosive Old Firm CIS Cup clash by insisting Rangers are as good as Celtic.
The under-fire Ibrox boss ignored the fact his shot-shy side side trail Gordon Strachan's team by 12 points in the SPL and are languishing in fourth place
But ahead of the Parkhead clash, McLeish said: "Why should we be going to Celtic Park with any trepidation at all?
"We are every bit as good as them. We have just got to start proving that by turning results into a positive sense
-
Malone 19. 1.23
Re the identity of Fargo... I think not.
-
thanks for taking the time to write a very good summation Paul.
It did take the team time to find thier feet but I think the way they now communicate, cover for each other step the tempo up and down, shows patience and belief.
This has been instilled from Gordon and from where I sit with my feet up I don't fret. I just enjoy the journey we are on and I'm the learning curve with this team.
I think the onus was on winning tonight and that coupled with the fact that it was rangers may have affected the fluidity of our game. However we got what we needed and were mature throughot the game and the team.
thanks Mr S
-
Anyone know if Zurawski and/or Sutton will be back in the frame for the 19th.
-
Just got into my hotel to settle down and watch the game on C67 and the server is down :( What a bummer.
Cheered myself up by reading all the comments posted during the game. Thanks to all.
Great result although it sounds like an average performance was enough to beat a bad team. Looking forward to seeing Shaun's goal.
Hail Hail

Have finally caught up with all the posts after coming back from the game.
Even though I am still on a high I agree with those posters who felt that, despite our complete & utter domination, we didn't actually have to play all that well; I have no doubt that we can & will play better in the weeks & months to come.
Rangers on the other are quite simply appalling. In over 30 years of watching Old Firm games I'm not sure if I have ever seen a more gutless, insipid, performance.
Very pleased to see Naka's resolve after what I thought was a pretty poor first-half performance. He worked his way into the game in the second half & became increasingly influential as the game wore on. Contrast this with his appearances early in the season when he was invariably hooked after around an hour or so.
For me, however, the shining lights were our midfield duo of Lennon & Petrov. If Lenny has had a finer game in a Celtic jersey I can't remember it. I also thought that we saw a different side to Stan Petrov tonight - dare I say that he put on a magnificent display of "ugly" football? I was one of those who was worried that we might be out-muscled tonight & I think that Stan was one of the main reasons why that didn't happen. He was involved in several meaty challenges including one memorable occassion when he completely bowled over big Kyrgiakos.
Finally, great to hear "Fourth In The SPL" being sung, even if it was only for a short spell. Something tells me it will get bigger licks when we're back at Paradise on the 19th for the league match - well done to everyone concerned.

The repercusions for Rangers.
1 Klos' sell on price seriously diminished.
2 A downturn in attendances and catering revenue.
3 A fall in replica gear revenue and just before Christmas too.
4 A bill for 800k from Big Eck?
5 An expensive clear out bargain basement sale when Eck's replacement shows up.
-
Gavil
With you 1-5. The upside is it will allow them to sell Klos now without the same backlash, also not play him in Europe without the too many eyebrows being raised.
I managed to see the 2nd half on C67 (when it worked) in the office......gonna watc the first half now.
-
Lads,
A first time poster here on CQN - just settled down to watch the highlights with a nice bottle of vino and reflect on a most enjoyable result.
Delighted for WGS - whilst I think we maybe normally dismissive of the CIS Cup, this is a great opportunity for our manager to get some silverware in the trophy room early in the season. Hopefully this will have the same galvanising effect akin to that of the Killie victory in MON's first season.
Biggest highlight for me tonight was the performance of Shaunaldo and demonstrating that he is now very much an integral player in our starting 11 - how much money have we saved ourselves there?
On a sidenote - a big Hail Hail to my good mate Northy down in Oz and a very good evening to SanFran Tic.
Cheers!
-
Just to follow-up on the last post...SanFran_Tic - I assume you're up in the city and get the games in the Abbey?

another knock-on is no Euro spot therefore no CL cash - must affect their plan for next yr. The bargain basement sale will raise peanuts.
No quality manager will take a position with poor resources on the field and no facility to replace them. Youth could be an option - are their 5-6 playesr close to breaking through at Ibrox?
I think they have to hold on and hope they can get through to the next stage in the CL or at least get a run in the UEFA. I have said it before they have to rely on Eck to fund the conditions that will allow them to sack him and attract another manager.
-

Not today, I watch it on C67. back in the day before we had a club in the city I used to travel down to The Fiddlers in Millbrae. Is that where you watch the games?

SanFran_Tic,
Good to hear from you pal - yeah, I get the games @ Fiddler's.
Good crowd today with the amusing sight of folks in for lunch wondering what all the fuss was about :-)

I don't envy you guys your rise a week on Saturday. It's bad enough on the east coast. No doubt it will be worth it.

My views on the game.
Rangers were Feckless.
I can't believe how poor they are, having only seen them in the previous game with us at Ibrox.
Celtic were only as good as they had to be.
Defence was untroubled.
NL and SP in midfield were strong and dominating.
Nakamura san provided the guile, drawing Rangers players to him like moths to a flame when he got the ball. Note the number of free and running Celts there were whenever we surged forward.
BBJ was effective first half but missed a sitter 2nd half and faded somewhat. Was it the white boots?
Great goal from Maloney.
The ref was poor, but the North Stand linesman was terrible. Why was Stan's goal ruled offside when he was clearly on? OK stupid question I know.
Ricksen assaulted Nakamura san and Kyrgiakos proved that football is not only a contact sport, but encompasses the best from ballroom dancing and the WWF.
The blue figures in your mirror are even further behind than you think.
-
Gavil - an excellent summary of tonight's proceedings.
Our midfield was absolutely superb this evening - I especially thought Lenny played a magnificent game and certainly emphasises the need to have that type of player in the team.
-
What a satisfying result. Our total dominating play would have been even more obvious if we had sunk a few of the missed sitters. Our pace on the breakaway is improving all the time and the quick passing game is a delight to watch.
Discipline and focus are core skills Wee Gordo is tattooing on the players.
The highlight for me was the robustness of Naka's play. He stood up to the rough stuff well, including Ricksen's fore arm smash to the head.
Lets roll Celtic!
P.S. Sorry to disappoint young Malone, but just because Rod Stewart was at the game doesnt make him Fargo.
The unmasking of the Great One will not come to pass, not should it be attempted.
Hail, hail.

Absolutely delighted. Was slightly uneasy going into the game as strong favourites but with 3 (THREE) strikers out injured. Now lets do the 2nd part of the job at least as well. Rangers were awful, and seemed to completely lack any team spirit.
Probably 50-50 whether McLeish is still in charge on the 19th. It would be a little unusual to sack a manager after a League Cup defeat. Ultimately their delightful fans will probably determine his immediate fate. He hasn't completely lost them up until now but last night could be the final straw for many. Murray also has 9 days before the next game. If he's got a potential replacement in mind he may move now and give the new man a bit of time to settle in.
I have no dislike of McLeish. I spent half an hour in his and Willie Miller's company in 1988 at the Garden Festival and thought he was a good bloke. I did choke on my cornflakes reading the '132 years of dignity' story, but he's not come out with very much else that could be seen as inflammatory, and we should remember it's not his job to be popular amongst the Celtic fans. After all, while I totally supported and agreed with MON when he stated that Neil Lennon had been subjected to sectarian and racist abuse, he wasn't going to win any popularity contests at Ipox after that one. My main gripe with McLeish is that he's been a right jammy bugger since becoming Rangers manager.
'We shall not be moved' has never been my favourite Celtic song, but it has taken on a whole new lease of life in the last couple of weeks. I particularly like the way we name our challengers in the correct order of merit as stated in the league table. In a couple of weeks time we might have to change the words to 'By the Hearts, the Hibs or the Killie'. Just a nice wee thought.
A couple of unrelated questions. I'm trying to complete my proxy forms for the EGM. I bought CPO shares in the 2001 issue, and recently opted to reinvest my dividends and receive further shares. Am I right that these further shares are Ordinary Shares (rather than CPO Shares) and I should complete parts 2 AND 3. Secondly why does part 1 offer you the opportunity to vote for the resolutions on an individual basis, but then in parts 2-4 you have to approve them all as a group? Thirdly I was considering attending the EGM as I have never been to any of the AGMs or EGMs before. Are they interesting?
Finally an unrelated question. Somebody made the 'succulent lamb' reference to Mr Murray on here recently. I've read that one a few times now. What's the basis for this story? Thanks for any help.

Few points about last night.
Referee and linesmen were terrible. Rangers were getting away with some bad tackles and forearm smashes. Petrovs goal disallowed why?, shocking decision.
But for some poor finishing it could have been 5-0.
Sitting watching the game I thought if we had a full squad available and were able to bring on the likes of Majic, Sutty or Beattie then we could murder this mob.
Expected nothing less from the forces of darkness they gave their all but came up against a better team with more skill, pace and guile.
Atmosphere fantastic the look on Borucs and Nakas faces as they came out was just a sight to behold.
What a goal wee man.
Well done the bhoys well done the fans well done WGS and the coaching staff.
More of the same on the 19th please.

ps Kloss bottled it, well you would with Bobo coming at you like that lol.

McLeish is quoted in July this year, trying to push Michael Ball out the door:
'Michael had a good season and finished it a champion. But the bottom line is that his wages are still hurting the club.'
Now that even the Rangers sycophants (the Scottish press corps) are asking when McLeish will go, I wonder if feels that he is now honour bound to practice what he preaches and resign, so that Rangers will not have to pay his redundancy package? I wonder if he feels his £800,000 would be 'hurting the club'?
-
Gavil Guy...
Meant to say - thanks for posting the goals - superb
1. What a peach from Shaun
2. Klos was so worried about Bobo that he completely lost the flight of the ball, and was surprised to find it almost behind him. Much to admire from Naka
-
well done to one and all,but it should have been a bit more comfortable.how many times does sir stan petrov run into the box to be missed/ignored by his teammates?he could easily get 100 goals a season[o.k.exaggeration]
and well done to supermo kamara.he got pelters when he started, but instead of taking the hump he has worked pretty hard at his game.
the tackle on him by fanny jeffers deserved more than a booking.
allez les verts!

Having just digested the laptop loyals take on the game this morning I think we are being wrong in referring to it as "lazy journalism". It must be very hard work to put such a positive spin on such a desperately poor outfit (The Scotsman excepted). It is instinctive and innate dare I say genetic and long may it continue. Looking so much forward to the meltdown.
1. Both goals Klos errors - false
2. Prso headed against the bar - false
3. Kyriagkos red card was unwarranted - false
4. No mention of the Hartson and Petrov offides; one a legit goal and one flagged before the ball was even played (watch the video)
5. No mention of the career threatening tackles on Mo Camara
6. No mention of Celtic having only one fit striker
7. No comparison between Rangers CL superstars against Celtics Lhaddies (scottish ones to boot)
8. No mention of Psycho Sissies elbow to Naka's head
9. No mention or accolades for Lenny´s sterling performance
10. No mention that all Gers attacking play resulted from Celtic errors
11. No mention that the worst player ever to play for the hoops was not substitued at half time for being Olivier Bernard.I mean if Celtic are not as good as they used to be then enjoy your Rangers career in their reserves or is he training for a job in the Scottish media as an independednt pundit
12. Possession stats not even mentioned.
13 No mention that the only player that the wee narrow minded peeeple gave an accolade for is a Motherwell player.
14. NO SPECULATION AT ALL ABOUT WHO THE NEXT INCUMBMENT might be except for Paul Jewel and Sam Allardyce ... keep taking the pills
.. Looking forward to the seeing two Jimmies jousting with this seasons favourite to get the sack first. 1.0 to WGS
Hail Hail

Good win, our effective football should have brought more goals. Now on to the league game.
Only disappointment for me was the amount of anti Rangers songs from the crowd, I much prefer the pro Celtic stuff. :-)
Of course that`s what drink does.

By the way... Do I win the prediction league 2-0 and greater than 60% possession?
Not bad if I say so myself ;->

Just wanted to share my delight after last night. I can never remember being so relaxed during an Old Firm game as I was last night. Not even in the 6-2 game was I so relaxed. We totally outclassed them in every respect. I was laughing at all the guys with their 4-0 and 5-2 predictions earlier in the week, but it could easily have been 3,4 or 5-0 if we'd taken just some of our chances. The 5-2 guess was plain stupid - as if they'd score 2!
Going through the team, the defence was solid and Boruc could have had a picnic on his goal line and wouldn't have been missed. Naka, Lenny and Petrov were simply brilliant, while Aiden showed glimpses of what he's capable of, but took a few wrong options. I certainly think he deserves a chance for the next game. BBJ and Maloney played great. BBJ missed some great chances but it was great to hear the support cheering him rather than groaning.
On 810MW in the car on the way home, Gordon Smith said "Gordon Strachan goes on about this fast passing game. Well I didn't see much evidence of that. Certainly not in any prolonged spells." Well if that's not us playing nice fast pass and move football, I can't wait to see us when it's implemented! We may not have played as well as we can, but teh calmness throughout the team and the willingness to play passes even in tight situations was a joy to watch for me.
Also wanted to say give yourselves a pat on the back, the atmosphere was simply brilliant tonight. I'm still totally hoarse today - my throat is killing me! The only downside was area 438's unwillingness to join in me and my brother's shouts of you're fourth, in the SPL! All of you from 438 - let's get it going on the 19th!
-
Oh What a Beautiful Morning
Oh What a Beautiful Day
I've got a Beautiful Feeling Everything's Going My Way!
Great night last night we should have won by far more, (hurry Zurawski back for the League game).
Only black spot was my prediction yesterday that Maloney would be first goal scorer, and did I put any money on it? NO!! I'll never get rich if I don't trust my gut.
Has anyone got the goals in a Zip file? My work firewall will let me download Zip files but nothing else, so if anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
-
Meant to add, did anyone watch this on TV? If so, was Petrov's goal offside? What about the other times we were ruled off in the first half? Did Ricksen elbow Naka? How bad were the challenges from behind on Stan and Super Mo?
-
D'oh, meant other offsides in the second half!

agree with most of your comments paul, particulary on Barry Ferguson's comments. He has really impressed on this front since he came back to Scotland.
I thought Mo Camara was excellent, although I struggled to find any end product from McGeady or Nakamura.
I thought overall, it was a poor quality of game - by Old Firm standards.
Neil Lennon has improved immensely since Gordon took over, even although he was magic before hand. Young McManus is in line for Player of The Year.
On the singing front, it was a shame to hear that nonsene about "Cheer up Alex ..." last night. By the same token it was great to hear the real Celtic fans attempt to drown those bigoted chants out with the "Walk on".

Agree with Ternar and others re the singing of "cheer up Alex McLeish etc...", although it's probably a bit unrealistic to expect the crowd not to get carried away in the heat of an OF game.
I've always had this idea that Celtic and Rangers fans can be differentiated in their singing as follows:
· Celtic fans tend to sing in support or celebration of all the rich things that go into the mix to make us Celtic.
· Rangers fans tend to sing ‘anti’ songs - in opposition or to decry things they don't like / understand in others.
As Celtic fans I think we are at our best when we stick to singing songs of celebration and avoid songs that decry others - especially when personalised.
On another note - one of the high points for me last night was just before half time, when we were playing them off the park after the confidence of Maloney’s goal, and the fans gave a great rendition of the Willie Maley song. “To play football the Glasgow Celtic Way” was given even more impetus than usual and was a real sign of how much the fans were enjoying the manner in which we were outplaying Rangers.
-
All,
What a performance, what a night. Truly wonderful goal from Maloney and a Celtic performance I would rank as the most dominating I have ever witnessed against TFOD. When we won 6-2 at CP we never performed as well as we did last night. We beat TFOD that day by taking every chance and half chance, but could have lost as many as we scored on another day. However, last night we taught them a footbaling lesson- we moved the ball about with grace, kept possession and most importantly, we kept our heads. We played football the Glasgow Celtic way!!!
Anyway, fianl note- does anyone know where I can get a media clip of the goals from the game last night? There are a few International Bhoys who would love to see them.

I enjoyed that!
Excellent result and 2nd half performance. I thought the back 4, the midfield 2 and John Hartson built a strong foundation for our creative players.
I didn't realise Rangers were that bad - comedy in the herald that mcleish has found a left back slower than ball and more wasteful than vignal.
Good old Santa Klos.
On the fans front - the bbc's opening scan of the crowd contained at least 2 nazi salutes as they sang Rule Brittania. What a lovely bunch.
-
Glenn Gibbons in the Scotsman writes;
IT WAS hardly the widely anticipated humiliation, but Rangers, as expected, were put through the mincer at Celtic Park last night, losing the CIS Insurance Cup as well as the match.
On a night when Gordon Strachan had at his disposal basically better players than his besieged friend, Alex McLeish, Shaun Maloney's exceptional first-half strike appeared likely to be decisive even before the foolishness which had the Ibrox defender, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, ordered off for two yellow cards midway through the second half.
But Stefan Klos's own goal, the ball coming off his arm and over the line as Bobo Balde challenged for a long and deep cross from Shunsuke Nakamura on the right, merely confirmed the pronounced disparity in ability between the Old Firm rivals.
That astonishing goal from Maloney was a dressing that the general standard of play did not quite deserve. In this regard, Rangers were the more culpable , the Ibrox side having appeared to place the emphasis on preventing Celtic from settling into the rhythmic, passing game that has been a feature of much of their recent unbeaten run.
This was an entirely understandable tactic from McLeish, whose primary concern, given the unconvincing form of his own side over the past three months, would have been the danger of surrendering the initiative to hungry and ambitious opponents, in the process possibly undermining the morale of his own team.
Despite the close attention of the visitors, however, Strachan's players contrived the bulk of the fluent moves that were in evidence before Maloney's strike. With Stilian Petrov typically forceful in midfield and Aiden McGeady pushing forward on the left, John Hartson troubling the Rangers defence through the middle and Maloney often picking up the loose ball, there was a sense of looming trouble for Rangers.
This was strengthened when McGeady was supplied on the left by Maloney and he drove inside before releasing a right-foot shot which Klos held comfortably. That may have been a "sighter" for McGeady, who repeated the move soon after, this time beating the goalkeeper, but sending the ball marginally wide of the far post.
Those moments may have been interpreted as a caution to Rangers, but nobody could have been prepared for the manner in which Maloney produced his goal. Petrov played the ball forward to the little striker in what appeared to be merely the foundation stone of a move yet to be built.
Maloney, however, took a stride forward, jinked to the left of Julien Rodriguez and, from a range of at least 30 yards, sent the right-foot drive hurtling high to the left of Klos. Even the Rangers players may have felt like applauding. On second thoughts, probably not. They would be pre-occupied with the problem of constructing telling moves of their own that would bring some unaccustomed bother to the Celtic defence. But they managed to complete the entire first half without forcing Artur Boruc in the home goal to so much as a stroke of work.
But for a couple of questionable decisions by the stand-side linesman, Celtic might have visited even more trouble on their great rivals. The flag seemed to be raised before Neil Lennon's pass was made to Hartson, who appeared to have come onside by the time the Irishman released the ball in his direction. Without the arresting flag, he would have had only Klos to beat.
The second decision was clearly an error, as Petrov played the ball to the onside McGeady on the left. Hartson was in an offside position in the middle, but had no involvement. The linesman gave the impression he was as puzzled by the modern intricacies of the offside law as the majority of spectators.
These were little breaks for Rangers, who needed relief from somewhere as they toiled in vain to put together any kind of coherent movement from middle to front.
In search of a much-needed resurgence, McLeish took off Olivier Bernard at half-time and sent on Peter Lovenkrands, the Dane going to the left of the midfield four and Ian Murray retreating into the left-back position.
It would not have been a difficult decision, since Bernard had looked uncertain and untidy, a defender vulnerable to the probing of Paul Telfer and Nakamura on Celtic's right. Nor would the Rangers manager have to dwell too long on the question of replacing Steven Thompson with Francis Jeffers.
The big striker had struggled from the start to make an impact, although he was obviously handicapped by a notable lack of service from his midfield. But his own lack of mobility was a serious weakness in such a match and his departure in the 56th minute would surprise nobody.
It was, indeed, no surprise that Rangers' first semi-serious threat should come about as a result of a mistake by a Celtic player. McGeady's pass back to Balde was a little short, but the towering defender could have made a first-time clearance, rather than try to control the ball and simply allow it to run to Dado Prso. The big Croat, however, snatched at his shot and the ball went weakly wide. In stark contrast, Celtic's next moment of menace came from a series of smooth and accurate passes, Nakamura to Hartson to Petrov and, finally to McGeady on the left side of the penalty area.
With reinforcements arriving in the goal mouth, McGeady's chip might have caused serious alarm but for the alert and crucial intervention of Alan Hutton, who conceded the corner kick.
Given this disparity in the respective danger of the two teams, Rangers could have done without the stupidity that brought the ordering-off of Kyrgiakos in the 66th minute. Having been the first player booked, for a foul on Petrov in the first half, the big Greek defender incurred his second caution with sarcastic applause of the far-side linesman when the latter ordered a free kick against the defender for a foul on Maloney.
Being reduced to ten men when already a goal behind rather typified the troubles Rangers have, in the main, brought on themselves and their manager through this trying season.
...anyone see a pattern?

wonderful stuff ..just got back to my desk in london tired and bleary eyed but very very happy. I think we r underestimating ourselves we dominated last night.
I am beginning to start to think like Noel90...the best crop since the quality street kids..could be on the dawn of a GREAT team??
Dickbyrne ..I think nakamura makes Lennon a much better player. Now we have two players who are always available with Petrov bossing anyone who tries it on..fantastic .
Jeromek67 must be Rod Stewart then
BryceCyrdy
Hopefully we'll be singing your song soon
"Bring on the Hearts the Hibs The Killie "...I like that
-
Bryce Curdy - during "We shall not be moved" I was singing "By the Hearts, the Hibs or the Killie" but unfortunately no-one was picking up on it around me. It would have been great to have heard that sung by 53,000 people! Any chance we can get the word round to get it sung on the 19th to let them really see how much of a challenge they are to us?
Paul - An interview with Brian Quinn and now getting one of your songs sung by the Celtic Park choir! Well done. Also you're spot on about young Bazza's interview last night. A very dignified response to events at Ibrox - credit where credit's due.
To everyone else - I don't know why we're surprised by the media's response. I was coming out of the ground last night with my brother and we were both elated but I said, "What's the bets it was 2 goalkeeping errors and the Kyrgiakos sending off that won us the match?"
Oh and does anyone still think we should have went for Oliver Bernard?
-
Malone, Fargo has been ‘outed’ more times than that big Greek guy who used to be in Wham; I’ll add Rod to the long list of possibilities.
Whitedog, I was ‘with you’ on that one. Excellent.
Welcome Kevin.
Cheers Martinobhoy.

Living in the USA as i do,i obviously don't get to Celtic Park as often as i would like, having said that, i will be back for the upcoming league game against the current custodians of FOURTH position in the SPL,after todays show i am even more excited than normal,Celtic looked as though they were playing well within themselves while Rangers were simply awful, bearing in mind we have several top quality players coming back from injury i don't,for the life of me see how they can live with us,on a lighter note, can anyone tell me what happened to Lovenkrands after he came on?,he managed to pull off the near impossible feat of contributing ABSOLUTELY nothin, nada, zero, zilch,to think this guy used to induce heart failure in us,now it's his own fans who are heard to moan at his appearance, want to bet he is playing next week?.
-
Rosio
Recorded the game last night and analysed it later. Petrov's goal was clearly onside, shocking decision. Naka was deliberately elbowed by psycho ricksen, the tackle on Stan that resulted in the big geek getting carded wasn't that bad, but Jeffers was lucky only to get a yellow for the assualt on MC.
-
I am getting the feeling from some of the bloggers that they truly believe that we won last night, only because Rangers were poor. That is absolute nonsense. This will be the spin the hacks come up with. You can only beat what is put in front of you. So far this was the first big test that Strchan's men faced and won this season.
I say well done to them, and over the piece an excellent solid performance. Rangers barely had a strike on goal. We were comfortable throughout. Credit where credit's due.
My man of the match would be Lennon, who's passing and pressing were unsurpassed. However, Shaun's goal was great, and overall work rate was top notch. In addition, Nakamura was splendid. He looked ungainly in the tackle, but his work-rate in pressing married with his skills on the ball – fantastic. Definitely a work in progress, however it's shaping up rather nicely.
Let's bask in the sunshine of a hugely enjoyable victory.....but not get complacent. The job against the downfall of Rangers is only half complete.
-
"They have no defence and we now know have not one, but two bad goalkeepers – the second Celtic goal tonight was the worst piece of play I can remember seeing from a professional player."
Paul, in the nicest possible way...you had a good blog here, but please stop believing the hype, go back to what you are good at. Give us the facts, the financial figures and meanings etc.
You write Klos off after 1 bad game in how many years? I'm delighted at last night as much as anyone, but neither of their keepers is a 'bad' keeper.
I'm afraid to say, each article on here becomes more conceited than the last.
Finally, you do Stilian Petrov a disservice to compare his midfield play to that of Lennon/Sutton/Thompson. Entirely different.

Klos has never been a great goalkeeper at Celtic Park and last night was an embarassment - a real howler of the highest order.
Not only that it was the perfect example of everything that is wrong at Ibrox as it is a direct result of a player ignoring his manager's wishes.
His time at Rangers is up - he will not play against Porto.
AS for Wattereus - no better than ordinary as a goalkeeper but excellent with the ball at his feet. Yep, so he lacks the essentials then.
Arise King Artur.
-
Peace restored to the Galaxy.
Football played the Glasgow Celtic way & we won it in 2nd gear.
That was as easy an old firm game as i've seen. Easier than the 6-2 game.
If Zurawski is fit for the next game - we could seriously skelp them
Everyone was brilliant but i still have a bone of contention with McGeady - so much talent & pace but still wasteful in good positions
-
Paul67 - your obviously a good man and most of what you write is excellent, however occasionally you take things just a wee bit too far which tends to undermine some of your points. Neither of the 2 Rangers goal keepers can be classified as BAD as we Celtic fans would understand it. One may be off form and the other not match fit, but BAD as in some of the goal keeping howlers we have witnessed pre Boruc - definitely not. Not that I care a jot, just hate to see your articles undermined by the occasional comment that hasn't been thought thru.

Extremely happy with the result, but and it's a big but (kinda like J-Lo big) we should have punished them far more than we did.
I know many will have a go at me for these comments but they well totally aweful and the fact that we only scored 1 goal (loved the tannoy announcement as we were leaving the Klos had been credited with the second. lol.
Possibly the bhoys are just saving it for a week saturday but we need to stamp our authority on this mob and let them know they've been beaten.

Only disappointment the whole night (with the exception of the poor crowd control that caused me to miss the first 4 minutes of the game) was the crowds reaction towards O’Geady. They got on his back the first time he lost the ball, and groaned in anticipation of him losing it henceforth. Thought it affected his game, although I thought he was more unlucky in the majority of situations rather than choosing the wrong option.
-
well well well, who would have thunk of it all eh?
rubbish celtic team get humped by artmedia, dodgy against mothersmell, humiliated at snake mountain..... magnificent against the rankers.
what a turnaround? I for one am finally starting to see the light with this "New Celtic" stuff. Wee Gordon Strachan appears to have weaved some sort of magic and has now taken his team to successful passing of the first big test.
NOTE I SAID FIRST!!
Anyway, just to add to tuppence worth, The (formerly) worst LB in Scotland has lost his crown and it is now shared by two, yes TWO Rankers left backs, Murray and Bernard.
Big Soti was a numptie (nothos) from the first push on WeeShaun, Rodriguez was purepsh, and as for Hutton...well bet he wishes his leg had snapped again so he wouldn't be facing Aiden and SuperMo again in ten days time.
Wee Bazza was posted missing...again Ricksen didn't do much except donkey one over the bar and try to decapitate Naka. Lovelypants and Namouchi were anonymous for ninety minutes, Thompson may as well as been sitting where our Thommo was for most of the game as he was that ineffective.
Prso? Will someone get McManus' shorts as I'm sure he's still in the pockets... although he'll have lost his girly ponytail as I think Bobo may have ripped it off when he got booked.
As for our lot, I'm not going to do them one by one, but for me Lennon and Camara were outstanding last night. Simply outstanding. Lennon seemed to be like a man posessed for ninety minutes, I think this fitness thing is starting to kick in with the team as he ran and ran and ran all night. Camara had his best game for us too.
The new Oracle should be Baldymeister for calling 2-0 and Kygiakos' red card.
One more thing.... has anyone seen Namouchi? Are you sure he was there?
-
Some over the top statements being made in some of the posts.
Yes - Celtic were the better team on the night.
Yes - Rangers were woeful..
..however, that was not a good performance from Celtic and they know they can do better.
Celtic stood off the Rangers players when they had the ball far too many times when they should have been closing down.
The lovely overlap movements of the last couple of games was gone, although on the left side of the pitch I blame McGeady, more of that later. In fact far too many times the wings where ignored. Why?
McGeady was profligate and needs to work on his teamworking skills. Petrov was not happy with him on a number of occasions and I was happy to see him subbed for Thompson. In particular he was far too static and Maloney had to come across to pick up play that McGeady should have been involved in. So definitely not the finished article. Back to the reserves for you, son.
BBJ has had better games. His linking play was not good and I don't think he won a header all night.
Likewise Telfer has had better games.
The rest of the team played very well despite the failings of the overall play.
Still, that has to be the worst Rangers team I have ever had the misfortune to watch.
Bring on the 19th!
-
Very happy in the baldymeister household today, very happy..
I was going to claim the 'Oracle' title as I predicted 2 nil and the Greek tragedy, but will leave it to Supercelt as he did predict the Falkirk score as well.
Played very well yesterday, everyone including McGeady. Was it just me but almost everytime he had the ball he was double teamed. His options, even for a simple pass were often limited, and I felt this considering he did very well. Yes he had the break away opportunity, which he messed up, but he will get better.
Did anyone else notice in the first half Nosferatu, warming up on the touchlines (Can anyone confirm if cold-blooded evil creatures of the night actually warm up?) running directly towards Stan as he was chasing the ball?
I was half hoping that Stan would follow through with his sliding tackle into Rae's calf.
Surely Rae was interferring with play? The linesman standing there and not a thing said.. Typical.
-
Make no mistake this will be totally demoralising for tfod. They know they are moving backwards as quickly as we move forward.
They know they cant compete with us.
This moment took a long while coming as we watched them buy their nine, fiver for tenner comments and all !
Sit back and enjoy,We dont need a strong Rangers!
Just wonder in a few months time will boombastic Dave still feel that rangers are the only team in scotland that can fill their stadium without the need for a travelling support as he boasted prior to the lock out game !!
Best moment of last night - The smile on Camara's face when the fans sang his name after knocking the ball out of play trying to put in a cross.
Worst player in Celtic's history - lol
Well do Mo
-
Tom64,
Who stole his scone? Was it you Noel? Big Joe? Come on who did it? Somebody hand it back........Kojo?.....Supercelt?
Paul... you're the boss, get them to hand it back so he'll cheer up a wee bit....
Tom, Are you always this miserable? Lighten up for once, All you do is come on here and moan and whinge about everything. I was on a proper high until I read your comments.
At least let us have 24 hours of basking in the post old firm victory glory, then have a whinge...
Let us enjoy it for 24 hours please...................

Klos has never kept a clean sheet.
My granny can kick a ball better than Klos
Klos was dodgy last night.
Klos was a good keeper. He aint no more

Todays interview with Maciej Zurawski.
When we will see you next time i the game? It looks like it will be Celtic-Rangers match. It's next weekend 19th of November. I'm very particular about that match. It's the most presigeos game of the season.
Zbyszek Legia fan
-
I can't wait for Zurawski to return - I think he will take our play up another notch.
Selection problems though.
We should start the next game with the same team with only McGeady in doubt I would say.
-
Would just like to add my views as the armchair supporter (not that I spent much time sitting down).
I thought that Kyriakos was due his red for fouling and sarcastic applause. His first yellow was not deserved, but his two handed throwdown on Maloney was one of many fouls that warrented a yellow.
I felt that the midfield operated so well, that I don't even recall seeing Barry Ferguson getting to do his "broken arse" run with the ball more than once.
Petrov ran the show, closely followed by Lennon and Camara with a very competent performance by McManus. (defo Young player of the year... at least).
By the way, did anyone even see Lovelypants? I'm sure I saw him go on as a sub, but I've got no evidence to show that he was there.
Again, Rangers were VERY fortunate not to lose by even more.
Petrov was 100% on side for his goal.
Ricksen didn't so much elbow Naka, but was very sly by making sure his elbow was at head height when Naka was challanging for the ball (another plus point).
As for Jeffers, his tackle on Mo was far worse than the one that warrented a straight red for Thommo at Mordor.
Absolute straight red. I'm guessing the ref felt sorry for them and didn't want a total pasting.
-
Does anyone have a link to Stan's legitimate goal?
Cheers.

Tom 64 - think you're being harsh on Petrov who i thought was different class. I agree with you on McGeady right enough.
I don't want to patronise you on tactical play, but you raised a couple of points
Firstly - that we didn't shut them down quickly enough?
I have to take exception to that one. We have a number of ordinary players in our team, but this is the fittest Celtic team i've seen. You can't possibly chase opponents for the full 90 minutes - so you have to allow the opposition to have the ball in certain areas of the pitch where they can't hurt you & know when it's appropriate to close down & when it's not.
You mentioned that wing play was ignored, but if you have any games recorded from this season or watched last nights game, then you should concede that the movement in the final third is fantastic. I've picked up on our wide players starting positions being almost on the touchline - next thing you know they're in a central position with the ball, have options in front of them, out wide, square & behind them. To engineer an overlapping move - you have to patiently keep the ball until your opponents have been sucked into the play & leave themselves isolated - voila the through ball
Anyways i'm away incase you think i've turned into Alan Hansen
Hail Hail

correction: Klos has never kept a clean sheet at CP

Lads I guess this is my fourth or fifth comment after a lot of daily enjoyment

As myself an d others have said before on here Klos is their only saleable asset and his mistake last night only convinces me more that he will be dropped for their Porto/Milan games - thus increasing his value in January when the transfer window opens.
They are abolutely ROOKED (and don't we love it)
-
Vargashampoo,
I didnae mention Petrov, he is like a God unto me.
I ain't whinging, just trying to be realistic.
Closing down does not mean chasing all over the park, all the time. It can mean stepping up to the player in possesion of the ball to cut down on his options. Sometimes the Rangers player was being allowed too much time on the ball, and that is not just my opinion but the opinion of the guys around me at the match.
Anyway, we won and I am a happy Tim.
-
Guys, let's keep it positive. Yes we were playing against a poor Rangers team, and yes we could play better, but come on - we totally dominated them. They had one shot on target the whole game which was as so weak, Boruc would hardly have felt it. We created loads of chances and if it wasn't for some poor linesman decisions, we'd have won by 4 or 5. Who'd have thought we'd have been saying that when leaving Ibrox? Let's be thankful of the turnaround.
As for the fans groaning, it's something we should try to stop. When BBJ missed a sitter, and when Super Mo pumped a cross out we started singing their name. It's something we should be doing for McGeady. The boy has all the skill in the world but is only 19 - don't forget that. He's going to make bad decisions now and again. If you want him to skin people, you have to then accept sometimes it won't come off and he'll therefore lose the ball.
More of the same on the 19th and you'll get no complaints from me! Oh yes it's so japaneasy...
-
For Tom 64 @ 10:49 - read James Traynor.
I would hate to experience life through your eyes. For you the glass is not only half full, but the wrong shape, and the beer is warm and stale.
Cheer up mate. We won, and won comfortably.
However, I am not going to let another's negativity infect the dreamy warm feeling right now.
The job is only half done, but so far the future is bright, a lovely shade of green & white.
-
Tom 64 and Vargas Shampoo
I agree with elements of what you are both saying but Tom I'd hate to see you mate after we had been beaten as badly as that lot were by us last night.
Raise a smile - yes we should have won by more but the victory was still very comprehensive nonetheless. It is there to be enjoyed.
As to the movement VargasShampoo is right at least to my eyes. We are moving the back 3 or 4 of the opposing team all over the back line and very subtely making them turn inwards outwards and backwards trying to track our runs from midfield.
WGS has stated so many times recently about the need to make other teams think and vary the play.
To me the second half last night was very interesting watching Celtic's attack stretch Rangers all over their midfield and back line - it is not perfected yet and it needs players like Aiden to think a bit harder himself and bring a bit more maturity to his final option.
As Paul said at the top the Man of the Match was WGS - he clearly sees the path and now I am convinced the players young and old guard see what it is all about
and believe they have what it takes.
As the season moves on and they spend more time on the training pitch this interaction and movement is going to become more evident and impressive.
-
I AM A HAPPY TIM!!!!
OKAY?
-
Some of the negative comments regarding Mcgeady and Petrov are quite baffling. The first is still learning his trade and believe it or not he is 19 give the boy a break fgs. Stan, the best player Celtic have, do you think he is superman?. Celtic NEVER looked like losing the game indeed it could have been 5-0. They say you cant please all of the people, some clearly not it is them who are consistent critics of ie young Mcgeady are in all probability back seat drivers.
-
great article Paul,
not posted for a while.
I thought the defence were seldom tested last night. Camara's tireless running is an integral part of our attacking option.
Lennon seems to have rejuvenated those ageing legs in recent weeks.
I thought Petrov was the MOTM last night. He was everywhere and seemed to have a higher gear than anyone else in the midfield. The way he brushed by Rickson and took the ball off him was like a big bhoy stealing the ball off the toes of a younger pupil in the playground.
My only concern is that we should have murdered them last night and didn't. Hopefully having now won (hey that's palindromic) a game that mattered, the team will have more confidence in themselves and the system. That should strengthen our resolve and allow us to deliver the killer final pass and score heavily against them.
Glad to see the CQN mantra got a got airing last night. I tried several times, but no-one round me was taking me up on it.
It's going to be an enjoyable week and a half, AT LEAST. And as we say
Fourth in the SPL
your Fourth in the SPL
your Fourth in the SPL
your Fourth in the S.P.L.

Bromley , i reckon i should take the prediction league as i went for three nil , petrovs goal should have stood , denied by the masons in black again!!! GAh!!
-
As usual, all the main points have been well covered by other posters. I'd second the sentiment that this was the least stressful OF game in my life. I tend to be a bit of a nervous wreck, even with a 3 goal lead, but I have a full set of finger nails this morning.
Paul, I don't agree that tfod have 2 'bad' goalies. I hope that Lennon stays for another year. His passing is quicker and sharper than ever....helped by good, off the ball running by his teammates.
Shaun....superb. McGeady, he'll get there, he's only 19. If he has the will to learn, he'll be a top player in 3 years time.
Rangers.....haven't seen them since the dougal-gate. I was surprised at how poor they were. First 15 minutes, they were winning a lot of loose balls, but then it became apparent that energy was all they had.
I really felt that, had we got a 2nd by 60 minutes, that we would have run up a score. In fact, had Beattie been available to come on for the last 20 minutes.....oh well, next time::))
-
Someone posted this question a few threads ago.
When was the last time Rangers won a game?
Mr Biggins
-
I would hate to be a defender facing McGeady. The guy has skill, trickery, mimicry, gallusness, unpredictability and undiluted natural talent in barrow loads. He can throw you entirely off your game, he can take two players out of their position, he can destroy players. I would have nightmares after the match, I would have nightmares in the 11 days leading up to the next match.
To be on the same team as Aiden on the other hand must be a little frustrating at times but it's only frustrating in the sense that we can't wait for him to be 20, 21 or 22 with the composure, experience and enhanced sense of 'team' that will bring. That frustration is evidenced in the stands a wee bit too often for my liking but it's understandable I suppose and in a strange way a compliment as we all know what he's capable of. By 26 he could be one of the best players in the world and I make no apologies for that statement. We are part of his development, let's do our bit.
Last night I thought it was obvious that Rangers didn't quite know what to do with him. Jockey? Tackle? Back off? When he cut inside in the second half you could see Colin and Justin at the centre of Rangers defence in complete disarray. A cuter or quicker pass on a couple of occasions and we'd have been hailing him a hero. It will come.
With Zurawski returning Aiden may be returned to the bench but he must continue to feature. With Maloney and Nakamura in these roles now so integral to the way we play, McGeady must have match practice to be able to fill in when necessary, and indeed challenge for first pick. I hope he is being nurtured and given the very best advice, and more to the point is taking it.
I look forward to every game now. What will wee Maloney come up with this week? Will he and Nakamura mesmerise and torture? Will Petrov continue this richest of rich vein of form AND will McGeady feature and grow game by game to what he can become?
It's a fine time to be a Celt. Enjoy.
-
Have to agree with hoopinessiseggshaped. The tone of Paul's articles recently has been very odd. Like Paul on stimulants or somoene else entirely. I even find the constant references to "fourth in the SPL" childish and embarassing.
Please stick to what you're good at Paul - really well written and passionate analysis and leave the rest of the crap to other people.
Thanks
-
Excellent post BlantyreKev.
Totally agree that McGeady is a diamond. Look at the progress of Maloney in the last year. Give McGeady some time, and patience - he will become an even better player than young Shaun as he has greater natural raw talent to begin with.
Who better to nurture this talent than WGS. A true coach of up and coming talent.
-
And a big thank you to Aberdeen for making sure that Stefan Klos spent last Saturday with his arms folded and was therefore not even remotely ready for the Celtic assault last night.
Cant agree that he's a bad keeper but I've always thought he was a bit over-rated by the media experts. I dont think he is a patch (although it pains me to say it) on Andy Goram who really did win games for Rangers against us. No clean sheets at Celtic Park tells its own story. Even Big Rab kept a few clean sheets at Ibrox.
One final point. Mo Camara has came on a helluva lot since the opening weeks of the season and a big part of that is that the fans are now behind him. Any chance we could do the same for young Aiden? He gets enough boos off the opposition fans without us starting on him.
-
BlantyreKev
re-your comment about Colin and Justin, according to the future Mrs. baldymeister who has met them they would be in fact very happy with last nights result. :-)
One more comment re-Aiden and last night. Yesterday Aiden was double-teamed by Rangers, often facing both Hutton and Fernando/a.n.other when ever he got the ball.
Rangers obviously viewed him as a massive threat, so much so that it created extra space for Naka to exploit.
The fact that we are playing with Naka, Sean, Aiden and with Magic still to feature, teams will not know who to spend more time looking out for.
Lenny last night was magnificent, I do hope though that we start to play Lawson in a few games just to give him a break and hopefully lengthen his career (next season at least). It is important that Lenny is fit for the rest of the season, but also we should be looking at his eventual replacement be it Lawson, Ferry or Grant.
-
Xavier,
You must have known at least one (maybe 2) would be chopped off though!
Oh and I'd like to add... I think people are being harsh on you McGeady as well. He has talent. He tracks back. He scares the opposition and in my opinion he makes Camara a better player as he can pick him out for a pass quickly.

Hello Paul, good day to all.
Haven't posted for a few months but always reading.
Excellent article Paul, 'bad' goalie comment aside. So what, your entitled to the odd bit of triumphalism now and again.
Fantastic to see Naka busting a gut.
His awareness of opponants when on the ball and his ability to suck them in and leave them for dead is fantastic to watch.
As an armchair fan myself I had to laugh when the interviewer described the first goal then asked W Gord how it was for him.
WGS replied with "How was it for me?,Thank you very much, I haven't been asked that for quite a while!"
Classic WGS
Hey Tom 64 Cheer up man. (only kidding)
-
Enjoyed last night immensely, don`t know what i enjoyed more, total domination, or watching the worst hun team, for a long time.
I think the hun will improve (they can`t get worse, can they?)they have Buffel, Novo, and Hamdeni to come back and i`ve no doubt that will improve them.
But the tic have Magic, Beatts, and main man Sutton to improve us even more.
The criticism of Mcgeady is hunbelievable the boy has played about 100 mins of first team football in the last two months, he is a class act, through time his decision making will get better, and he will get stronger. His talent is unique which we should be doing our utmost to nurture, and we will see the benefits.
I love the Alex Mcleish song!!!!
Its soooooooo much better singing it than having to listen to it.

Good match report from the telegraph website.
-------------------------
Celtic pile more pressure on McLeish
Rangers, whose specialist subject has been making life difficult for themselves - and in particular for Alex McLeish, who has been pushed closer to the precipice by each indifferent performance - heaped further pressure on their beleaguered manager by failing to trouble Celtic in this quarter-final.
A grinding game was illuminated by Shaun Maloney's outstanding first half strike, but Sotirios Kyrgiakos - not for the first time this season - displayed remarkable stupidity to get himself sent off as his teammates strove to claw themselves back into contention.
Having been booked in the first half, Kyrgiakos conceded a foul for muscling Maloney off the ball midway through the second half. It was a commonplace foul and the referee was not about to make anything of it when the Greek applauded him sarcastically.
It was practically a demand for a red card, which Kenny Clark could not ignore and Kyrgiakos merely emphasised his folly be continuing his disenchanted clapping all the way to the tunnel. Kyrgiakos' absence contributed to Celtic's second goal, when a Shunsuke Nakamura cross, from a short corner, was allowed to float across the area with Stefan Klos flapping at it as it dropped in at the far post, under pressure from Bobo Balde.
For 25 minutes the game was devoid of anything approaching finesse or guile. It did, though, exhibit the golden rule of charged Old Firm derbies - make your mark first, preferably on an opponent - and as smoking challenges arrived with unremitting frequency, any player who proposed to take more than one touch in possession was swiftly disabused of the ambition.
Gordon Strachan went with the same players who skipped past Falkirk on Sunday and John Hartson was inevitably the principal outlet whenever Celtic felt the force of Rangers' intermittent forays. However, like everyone else on the pitch, most of his touches were heavy.
The most tangible reward for Rangers in the opening stages was a couple of corner kicks, neither of which came to anything as the Celtic defence coped comfortably. Not that McLeish's back line was unduly troubled, either.
A single shot from Aiden McGeady was taken solidly by Klos on his line, and a threatening cross skipped past the German's far post.
There was nothing to suggest that the dreary deadlock was likely to be broken until Maloney produced his party trick. A Celtic counter-attack saw possession come to Stilian Petrov on halfway. The Bulgarian glanced up to see Maloney surging into space at the heart of the defence.
Maloney's speed - as much of thought as of feet - bore him away from Kyrgiakos but he was still far from goal with much to accomplish. However, he truncated the process in spectacular style by uncorking a fizzing drive which swooped behind Klos before he had an opportunity to gauge the trajectory of the shot.
Now the contest began to open out into more expansive territory and a Barry Ferguson run and shot was clutched by Artur Boruc before the goalkeeper watched a spinning shot from Fernando Ricksen swirl narrowly over his crossbar.
Nevertheless, Celtic continued to look at ease while Rangers' body language betrayed the uncertainty which has sabotaged their campaigns, at home and abroad.

Just thought I would add my tuppence worth to the feel good factor.
Agree with the posters who have said that we can and will play better. If we produce what we are capable of on the 19th, we will destroy them.
However, I have a major gripe - one on which I have posted before. We seen yet another over-the- ball tackle (Jeffers on Camara), punished only with a yellow card. As far as I'm concerned, there was NO difference between that tackle and Thompsons' one at I****, and there was NO attempt to play the ball.
Either an over the ball tackle is a red card, or it is not. There can be no ambiguity about this, and referees must sort this out quickly, (even if only too stop me ranting about it).
ROLL ON THE 19TH!! HAIL! HAIL!

Sorry for re-asking this - but can someone please post a link to the goals?
Some numpties in front of me stood up at just the wrong moment and I missed wee Seans.
Also read somewhere (Herald?) the reckoning that Mo C may be the 'most improved' player of the season. Delighted to see him come good - and I think he'll get better. That should save a few shekels in January.
Did predict 2-0 yesterday - probably the first time I've ever got it right - only to find that to get any Cred you have to couple the score with a sending off - typical.

Sublime, absolutely sublime!
I've never witnessed humiliation like it!!
The scoreline flatters to decieve. Shaun, Naka, Stan, Mo and Gordon you were all fantastic... Thank you
Its worth mentioning, I think, that last night we comprehensively took them apart with greater ease and skill than both Inter Milan and Porto were capable of.

I have also requested a link to the goals (and if possible Santa in a Zip file format please).
Still hoping, waiting, wishing....
Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide one.

Enjoying the feelgood factor on the site the mantle of player focus has moved from Mo to BBJ to Aiden.
On a night were we had a few starts Aiden was not one of them. But not once did he hide. When he made a mistake he tried to rectify. His passing may have been astray but not because he was doing too much on the ball.
I remember against Hibs last year when I witnessed a truly awful Maloney and look how he has bounced back. I am sure he will come good.
Roll on 19th.

Onto another subject - The Turnstiles.
I was queueing for ages to get into the match. Having arrived twenty minutes before kick off I was fully expecting to be in my 'temporary' seat by start of play.
No such luck.
Did anybody else have problems getting in?

Disagree with Johnathon about Paul67's conduct (fourth in the SPL). Not only do I think Paul's comments are appropriate, they are also necessary. For years FC Dignity have been pulling the wool over everyone's eyes about how good they are - last nights performance was probably the worst I have seen from a visiting team this season. In the days before the game there was the usual upbeat talk from their camp about how they were going to turn the corner at CP. As if it is that easy ! (Och well we haven't won a game in ages but there is no reason why we can't beat the best team in Scotland on their own patch). They may have some decent players to come back but they are also stuck with have Bernard, Murray, Thompson, Namouchi, Hutton, Andrews, Jeffers et al. None of these players are bad but they are all to a man ordinary. Watching some of the interplay in the second half when FC Dignity players couldn't get near the ball reminded me of scottish teams going into Europe. There was a distinct difference in class even though Celtic did not play anywhere near there best. This is not a temporary phenomenan - Dignity are going to be mediocre for a long time and Celtic fans everywhere should not forget that

For those looking for the goals....
Gavil Guy's post at 3.03am has the goals to download in wmw format.

The one thought I came away with was that we showed them far too much respect (I do it as a fan though, never feeling safe unless we're three up).
If any other team had come to CP and played that badly, they'd have been given a complete shoeing.

Paul67 Keep it up mate digress as much as you want, you are entitled to air your views.
Well done GS for sticking with it and promoting your brand of football.
Mo you were fabulous mate keep it up and I am glad you have ignored the doubters (which was media driven)
Stephen McManus/ Bobo outstanding.... was Prso playing
Really enjoyed our "team performance" it was 2 going on 6.
Sat in disbelief at the North Stand linesman and his inability to follow the rules of the game.
Finally I always thought the "cheer up" song and the other wee ditties were just banter thoroughly enjoyed signing them along with "FOURTH IN THE SPL" and will enjoy even more on the 19th.

Can’t believe the stick that Aiden and Stan are getting. Stan was quiet but I thought Aiden had a good game and it showed that he has been working on his teamwork- tracking back defending etc, you can tell that he has been in the gym and also he is no longer trying to beat men 3 or 4 times.
He has improved from the end of last season and the beginning of this. Another few years down the line the boy will be a top class player, but he needs time. 23 or 24 is the time to judge him not 19. Needs a decent haircut thou.

When is the Draw for the semis?
I would love to see GS get his first trophy, he deserves it.
Still a lot of work and progress to be made.
But for the effort so far, he deserves that trophy and the chance to go for he treble.

Great result. Pity I missed it. Was working late in Derry and got caught up in a bomb scare!!! In this day and age!!! Did not get back to Dublin till
midnight. I did though listen to it on BBC Scotland even though the reception done my head in. When Maloney scored I wasnt sure if he had scored or the stands had collapsed, nearly went over the hedge while straining to make out what happened.
Roll on the next on.

according to the Guardian, he will not be missing the league game..
Seems strange to me....
Tom64...Quit it. We are celebrating a convincing win. So stop whining. tomorrow.... whine away...

Guys
I agree with many of the comments re Aiden and we should remember that he is only 19
He is a wonderful prospect now and for the future
The comment made about good coaching is true but only to a point.
WGS has said so many times in the last few months that players need to show that they want to learn and has singled out Big Mick McManus as one who is desperate to learn every day and only with that desire to learn will the coaches be able to help.
If Aiden does that, then in the not too distant future he will live up to his Brazilian nickname because he will be sensational
Aiden son I hope and pray you take everything the coaches say on board and before long nothing will stop you!

Tony,
I've heard the drawfor the semis is on saturday

CIS Cup draw is on 19th Nov

Gavil Guy/Rohail - Many thanks for the link - I enjoyed that with my ham buttie!
Draw for semis is week Saturday 19th at 5pm I think - but theres no real point in having a draw - save us some money and just give us WGS's first trophy!

Just to add to all that has been said here is my view on a few things.
Celtic played well
they didn't
The heart of any team is the midfield, we clearly had the better
of it both in the creativity department and also not allowing their midfield to play.
Neil Lennon was outstanding the mans reading of the game is second to none. Roy Keane has been mentioned as a possible signing. Who would he replace in the team, certainly not NL,
hopefully these rumours will come to nothing.
Stan Petrov was put up for sale a couple of weeks ago by some posters me included, I take it all back we must keep him defensively and going forward there is no better midfielder in the SPL and few better in the EPL at the moment.
These 2 players were the catalyst for our victory last night everything good about the game came through their outstanding contributions.
Our back 4 as a unit are playing as well as any 4 to wear the hoops, although I stand by my statement a couple of weeks ago that as soon as another right back can be found Paul Telfer will be replaced, he is a short term signing.
Mo Camara gets better each week and the problem we have is not who to replace him with but backup for him (possibly Ross Wallace).
Celtic can only get better once the players that are injured regain fitness especially Zurawski we have a lot more options now than we have had for a long time and things are looking good.
Would like to say more but am supposed to be working.
The futures bright
The futures green and white.
Pat :-)
-
I've said on a number of occasions now that Stan isn't world class......... however, he is putting in some top class performances of late and more importantly, doing so on a regular basis. I hope I'm eating my words by the end of the season.
Does anyone have any idea what happened to the card display last night. I got to my seat 5 mins before the game started only to see green and white cards being waved around, but looked anything but a display?
By the way, Stella tasted sublime last night ;-)

I'm pretty surewe have Livi in the next round - it was shown in the programme last night (in a pre-determined world cup style diagram). My brother however seems to think the draw is on Saturday.
Kyrgiakos can play in the league game - he'd only have missed it if he'd been sent off for violent conduct.
-
Excellent, excellent result, and for me that is enough.
The way we played is secondary - as it usually is in the unpredictable arena of games against them; all the more so given that we are at the very start of a new era of a new style of celtic. I see no need to criticise individual player performances.
On those who lecture Paul67 about style and content. I have mistakenly done it in the past but I dont think it is on to be telling Paul what to write, it is afterall his blog. If you dont agree with what his position, it's your right to criticise but no-one has any right to tell him what to right.
-
Loved the fact that when Fernando the Commando tried the block tackle on Naka, it was the lightweight Japanese player who wouldn't last the rigours of the SPL who came out with the ball. Will the tv footage showing Ricksen clearly elbowed him and wasn't punished for it earn him a post-match red? Should do...
As to (Not Even) Klos - think his lack of match practice was the thing that let him down - shows how far Watterat has fallen that they brought him in to such an important game without being match-sharp.
-
Paul,
How on earth did Mrs67 manage to peel you down from the ceiling all by herself in order for you to write the article?
To all those who want to come on here and have a go at certain individuals performances-please get a life, and quickly. I heard it all on the bus home last night(a couple of roasters still have the temerity to question the contributions of Naka!). Last night was a glorious TEAM effort. We are a solid unit now who will run all day for each other-this is epitomised to the max by SuperMo.
It is s tremendous testament to the mental strength of WGS that he was able to pick himself and the squad up off the floor after a couple of KO blows at the start of the season. Who would have thunk it at all possible? A lot of work to be done but we are travelling fast on the right road.
I cannot beleive how bad TFOD were last night. Not that I am too concerned about the issue, but how poor and inadequate were they? Even the dynamic duo of bazza and poorshow(surely both shoo-ins for player of the year already)were out of sorts. Hopefully this will carry on through to the league game.
Still can't peel this Sarah O cheeser off my coupon today(but mine's is real and not painted on for TV cameras) and I'll be buzzing 'til the 19th, and hopefully long afterwards.
It's great to be a Tim.
Hail Hail.

BromleyBhoy,
You've got it the wrong way round about Camara and McGeady - it's Mo who helps Aiden.
His tireless and selfless runs buy the youngster time and give him an easy out ball which last night, for some reason, McGeady seemed reluctant to make use of.
Mo could be clearly seen saying to Aiden, after he had again been snubbed for a pass following a 40-yard gallop: "That's THREE times!"
On another occasion, Camara wrapped his arms round McGeady to encourage him after a bad pass.
Fans simply have to accept that Aiden tries things other players wouldn't. Last night, some of them didn't come off. Despite battling all night and showing a lot better defensive discipline, he perhaps tried too hard to play the "killer" ball and didn't take the easy options quickly enough.
But no one will know that better than Aiden and his manager, and both will be working tirelessly on getting things right for the next time.
We are so lucky to have someone with such talent. The other mob have no one near his class. Let's all make the effort to encourage our fellow fans to give Aiden the same sort of support that has transformed Mo Camara from figure of fun into cult hero.

I think the Greek bloke is eligable for the next one because he didn't receive a straight red.
For some reason two yellow's don't get you an automatic one match ban.
Anyway, chances are he'll be walking on eggshells during the next game, lest he be sent off again.
Also, Rodreguez looks doubtful, which means they'll have to play either Marv or Fani Fani alongside him.
Now, if Sutty and Zurawski are fit enough to play for us...........

I'm not usually one to gloat but allow me to post this. What a difference 2 months make, eh Darryl? From high profile Champions League player to bargain basement player:
Jeffers leads way in Rangers' Champions League triple bill Maniero and Bernard also sign up as Celtic clinch Du Wei deal
DARRYL BROADFOOT and MARK WILSON Sep 1, 2005
RANGERS prepared themselves for an assault on the Champions League with a trio of high-profile transfers. Francis Jeffers joined on loan from Charlton Athletic until January, while the club completed a 12-month deal for the Italian striker, Filippo Maniero, and signed the former Newcastle United and Southampton defender, Olivier Bernard.
Nine days to appoint the next manager
DARRYL BROADFOOT November 10 2005
Finding a player less mobile than Michael Ball and more wasteful in possession than Grégory Vignal is some feat, yet, in Bernard, Rangers appear to have done so. His failure to reappear after half-time merely confirmed another blind grope in the bargain basement.
-
I see Barry 'Insperational' Ferguhun is an injury doubt for the Scotland game. Unbelievable I know. Funnily enough I was just saying that before the game last night. Do you think he will be ok for the league game? I am sure the amazing rankers docs will make sure he is ok.

Rangers winger and Mensa participant Chris Burke sees no reason why victory over their most bitter foes cannot be the catalyst for their campaign.
He said: 'We are looking forward to this game on Wednesday and what better way to kickstart our campaign than by beating Celtic?
.... errrm what campaign is he on about did it not start in August ?
'I am sure it will be a great game because Celtic and Rangers will be looking to win ... not just Rangers as it was against Aberdeen.
errm sorry I saw only one team trying to win
'The game will be more open and there will be more space for the players to run in to. It will be more exciting and we are looking forward to this game and confident.'
'He is the right man. He has got the right players and he has bought most of them.'
Chris Burke´s a good tim after all then !!
-
The CIS draw is on the 19th, sometime after our 5th goal !!!
A sending off gets you an immediate suspension whether its the result of a straight red or 2 yellows. You can appeal a straight red thereby perhaps escaping an immediate ban but you cannot appeal an odering off as the result of a second yellow.
-
Oh yeah...and another thing...because of the turnstiles fiasco I never got my traditional pre match large coke.....I mean for GAWD'S SAKE!!!!
-
I believe that a straight red is a straight suspension, next game, any domestic competition.
Two yellows for the red card means you serve a one match ban in the next game in the same competition.
When Lennon was sent off for two yellows in the CIS semi at Hampden I think he served his ban the next season in the first round, hence the claim he has never served a suspension in the SPL.
-
Kev, surely when Lennon recieved his ban for the Ibrox fiasco he served the first part of his ban in the CIS cup against Falkirk, did he not?
Not sure of the reason but the dirty greek will play on the 19th, he doesn't recieve a ban.

Take a betablocker or something would you?
The way you are going is not healthy, you need to do something to keep the blood pressure down or else your going to end up in a bad way.

Not sure it really matters if big stupid Soti is banned or not.
I thought he was absolutely woeful last night and was being dragged out of position because he doesn't have the discipline to maintain the back line in a structured way.
In some ways I think Holy Man plays better against us than that big daft Greek so another indisciplined headless chicken performance next Saturday from him will be just great.
Greek he certainly is, Aristotle he certainly aint!
-
I've just seen the second goal for the first time. What in gods name was Klos doing for the second goal. He wasn't even watching the ball. Fud!
Mind you, if I knew big Bobo was coming at me like a steam train I wouldn't be watchin the ball either! :o)

Well said JohnBhoy about Aiden.
We are lucky to have him and in the words of dire straits “the bhoy can play”
Time for a wee chant every now and then for the lhad.

-
I loved the way big bobo picked himself after the goal as if to say 'ah, well'.
Caused sheer panic and induced fear in the opposition...all in a day's work.
-
So what happens when the Greek guy is sold and not around to play in next year's competition?? That means he and the huns get off with no real sanction.
An odd rule, if true.
-
Great qoute from Spiersy in the Herald
"Gordon Strachan can be pleased with one other aspect last night. Nakamura, slowly but surely, is adjusting to the physical nature of the Scottish game, where his creativity is starting to flower amid the thunder of hooves"
Wonder if the hooves are cloven?
Great performance last night. Thought Telfer never put a foot wrong, never wasted a pass. Mo just gets better and more confident with each game. Mick never broke sweat, Lenny was imperious and vied with Telfer for MOM. Thought almost everything stuck to Hartson for a change, makes a change from usually giving away posession. The rest were just merely superb, nobody in this team should have got less than 7/10
What was that North Stand Linesman on?
Great to hear our theme tune being sung - coincidence? i think not
-
BlantyreKev - you're right. According to Radio Scotland last night, a red card for violent conduct (i.e. straight red) means the player misses the next domestic fixture. Two yellows means the player misses the next game in the competition being played. He therefore is free to play on Saturday. They'll be well glad as Andrews will be back for the league game and if Rodriguez is out, it'd only have left them with Fanfan or Malcolm!
-
How good is it to be a tim the day........
Seen in one of the rags today......."rangers win the sing song before kick off".........with what songs?????
Heard them sing 3 times last night....."who s****** all the boys", a least 75% of them sang it.......they are SCUM in my eyes.......but nothing said in the press.

Like to add a few comments re. last night.
Thought Mcmanus was great, had Prso in his pocket. He must be the most improved player in Scotland.
As for Aiden, I still think this boy is going to be a great for us.
I know h still tends to over do it but I for one can see a difference in his game. My only criticism is the continual giving away of possesion from Balde and Telfer.

AS I AM A SELF CONFESSED FOOTBALL JEDI,
last nights 90 minutes can get broken down somewhat::::
1-25 mins absolute rubbish, helter skelter, dont get a second stuff!!!
26-45, the STRIKE, the attempted retaliation, then the game starting to calm down a bit..
45-60 mins: we dominated but looked a wee bit soft, with NAKA, and MCGEADY, staying wide, not as effective due to pressure, but width being important
60-90 sending off, immediately followed by NAKA getting unleashed, then we became better on the eye!! total control, not enough clear cut efforts, but should have been more!!!
ANYWAY THE THING THAT INTERESTS ME MOST ABOUT LAST NIGHT WAS THE CLEVEREST PREMEDITATED PLAN TO PLAY THE LONG BALL, SEMI LONG IF YOU LIKE!!! TO BJ`S CHEST,MIDRIFT AREA..not the usual aimless high ball to the top of his napper, after watching 2 re runs of the game, TELFER especially if under pressure just played the ball slightly short to BJ, this enabled the big man to have more of a control, it also takes away any chance of the defenders getting the ball.. 1 incident early where the greek geek won an easy header and clattered BJ too into the bargain.. from that moment it appears that the plan was for BJ to then lay off into the path of the runners, now i can assure you, if you watch NAKA,STAN and AIDEN, the speed of thought to get there, means to me that it was all preplanned.. BJ then for me was pivotal to everything going around him, WATCH and see its fascinating, and it caused them so much bother, THIS SINGLE PLAN ensured BJ had for me, one of his best games ever as a feeder, something i have criticised him for in the past..IT REALLY IS AMAZING HOW EASILY WE HAD 3 PLAYERS ROUND THE BIG MAN WHEN WE PLAYED THE LONG BALL!!
THAT FOR ME WAS THE BIGGEST THING IN THE GAME, AND ITS PLEASING TO SEE THAT INTELLIGENCE IS BACK AT PARADISE!!!! HATS OFF TOO WGS!!!!
-
Kojo, wonder how Naka, Du and the pole’s manage to read this! Any way that’s given me the confidence I needed, good football and I’m sure it’s gonna get better, wee bit better final ball from Mcgeady and we’re onto something alright! Now put them to the sword in 9 days time, and check out fergie-hun on BBC, sounds like a broken man alright
HAIL HAIL the celt’s are here!

Thought this from the Yahoo Sports web site might be of interest.
He said: "The players are performing abysmally at the moment. "They have no confidence, no imagination, no awareness, no shape and are running about like a team of individuals.
"And the passing against Celtic, for professional footballers, was woeful.
"I don't excuse any players from that criticism. Some players did okay on a couple of occasions but by and large, from the 'keeper out, they never performed.
Guess who the "he" was?
John Macmillan, general secretary of the Rangers Supporters Association.
Says it all really.

unless we are in the run up to an Old Firm game
In which case – more carrots please & leave the sticks at the door
Have I understood you correctly?

Not much to add to the comments of today. Most people sum the match up well and like the rest of you, I am enjoying a day on cloud 9.
I thought everyone played their part, and in the 2nd half in particular, I thought Stan was immense. Stan and Lenny did the donkey work and laid the foundations for the flair players to shine. They rose to their task superbly and I can't praise them enough.
It may be windy and rainy today, but the sun always shines on the day after a win against 'our friends from the west'.

TWENTY-SIX arrests for breach of the peace involving religious prejudice were made at last night's CIS Cup Old Firm match at Celtic Park.
Two of these arrests were from the Celtic support and the Club has confirmed that it will be taking strong action against those people, if found guilty.
A Celtic spokesperson commented: "Although, there were only two arrests for sectarian offences from the Celtic support of around 50,000, Celtic will continue to treat this issue very seriously. Police investigations are underway involving the two supporters and if found guilty, they will be banned indefinitely from attending all future Celtic matches, both home and away.
"As a Club open to all, Celtic has worked for a number of years to combat bigotry in all its forms, working on a range of initiatives including Celtic Education, Sense over Sectarianism, the Old Firm Alliance initiative and Show Racism the Red Card to name a few. We will continue this important work in promoting tolerance and inclusion.
"Celtic FC is also aware of the introduction of future legislation which will introduce football banning orders to Scotland. We are fully supportive of these measures which will be important in combatting sectarian behaviour at football matches."
So 92.3% of the sectarian arrests came from around 8000 fans - shocker eh ???

This is what always gets me. If it's only a "small minority" of these fans at Ibrox that sing these songs, how come this "small minority" keep getting tickets for games at Celtic Park?
Kojo
Admire your sentiments but I think what we saw in the run up to the game on here from some posters was the aftermath of Black Sunday. After Ibrox we all thought we had won the league and I think it was people just keeping their feelings in check and making sure we all didn't get carried away.
However if you are stating that we shouldn't be coming on and slagging off individual players then I completely agree. To be a supporter means to support.
-
Come on people, I wasn't actually serious about Fargo and Rod Stewart being one - however when you think about it, it does make sense!
Barry Fergushun is again a doubt for Scotland. Apparently a long standing Pelvic injury; why was he playing last night then?
If I was Walter Smith and this carries on I'd ban him from the national side for sheer apathy!
Hun-believable!

Compare and contrast the differnt approaches to sectarianism...
When the teams come out at Parkhead they've got kids in their rival strips with them and anti-bigotry messages.
At Ibrox there's two guys holding union jacks in front of the tunnel. And the tannoy plays cleaned up versions of Rangers song recorded by flute bands.
The Rangers shop still stocks a load of orange coloured tat.
At Ibrox, they are either criminally naive or they know their audiences tastes. Football fans are keenly aware of symbolism and the subtext from Ibrox is clear.
And Celtic should be congratulated on taking a committed and public stand against discrimination.
But anyway, enough of that.
Sean Maloney - the best player to come through the ranks since McStay ?
Strachan should sit him down and tell him the sad tales of Gerry Creany, Mark Burchill, Liam Miller and make it clear that if he works hard and stays at the club, he'll avoid their fate.
-
Still on the ceiling jamiebhoy – I have yet to discuss the game with any Rangers fans, and there are several in my office. I prefer to let these moments brew for a wee while, at least until I can fake a sincere question.
Thanks ayrshirecelt. I do get the odd bit of abuse from some for being too pro-Celtic, can you believe it? Is there such a thing?
Never before got abuse for being disparaging towards Rangers, and here was me being so nice about their captain. I will, however, unapologetically wallow in the moment for some time to come:
you’re Fourth in the SPL
Kojo, there is nothing quite like a winning Celtic FAN. I love your direct approach, keep shooting from the hip.
Mrs 67 is going out tonight, so I get to watch the whole thing all over again.
On Shaun Maloney’s goal:
The Celtic Park pitch is cut in two yard strips (check this yourself when you watch the game). Shaun hit the ball from behind the 34 yard strip across the goal. The ball travelled at least 35 yards before it crossed the line.
I cannot recall a goal scored from so far out.

malone 19 (and anyone else for that matter)
I'm a bit confused and unsure of FIFA rules but I thought if a player does not play for his country having been chosen by the home association (SFA in our case) then they can invoke a rule that prevents the same player playing in his next club match.
This was brought in to stop players and their clubs picking and choosing what Internationals they did or didn't turn up for as it could affect them for the following game.
Not sure how an injury fits in to this but he must be sailing close to the wind on this one and may be thinking that a friendly match with USA is hardly likely to miss him and so he rests up for the 19th November game.
If so I can't say I blame him but I hope we do likewise with Shaun and make sure he is equally fresh for that game.
If I have the FIFA rules all wrong please forgive me and maybe someone can put me straight on this

35 Yards? Will need to have a look at that tonight.
Im behind that goal so unsure how far out he was.
Sean Maloney- best young player since McStay?
A question for a few years down the line yet.

Some of the papers talked about a 25 yard strike.
Seemed much further out to me.
In fact when it left Maloney's boot I had enough time to mumble 'that's not goi-' before being delighted to have spoken too soon.
And some of Maloney's touches in the 2nd half showed how smart a footballer he is.
-
Last night's win was very important with the potential to be a pivitol point in our season.
We need to put teams away when we have them down as often the failure to do so comes back and bites you in the ass, but in the end a comfortable win for us.
Thought Lennon was outstanding as was Maloney in the second half, Petrov was very influential, Mo improves with each game and Naka is just sheer class hardly wastes a ball ... pass and move .. the mantra of top class coaching.
We will be stronger for the next game, time for an emphatic drubbing of them I say !!
-
35 yards is a confirmed distance.
As I say, check the way the pitch is cut, 3 x 2 yard strips between goal line and six yard line. Another three to the penalty spot and another three to the 18 yard line.
There is another 8 strips between the 18 yard line and Shaun, confirming 34 yards clear between Shaun and the closest part of the goal line.
The ball travelled across goal, meaning it travelled around 35 yards before it crossed the line.
-
Paul
Been following Celtic for many years including a period as a "ball bhoy" when I was actually on the pitch and never once counted the strips (of turf I mean)
God Bless your research !!
-
Sadly I have just paused the Replay on the Celtic site on 28 minutes and 12 seconds into the broadcast. I can confirm that Maloney shoots from at least 16 yards beyond the 18 yard line. My old primary school teacher will confirm that it is indeed a 34/35 yard shot.
And I was thinking Maloney wasn't a striker. Mea culpa.
-
For Maloney's goal.
If we assume that a) he hit it from 34 yards, b) that it rose vertically 1.3 yds, c) that it moved 4 yards from left to right and d) that the ball travelled in a straight (ie not a curved) line then applying pythagoras (twice) gives a total distance of 34.26 yards. If it moved 5 yards across the goal then that rises to 34.4.
I'm sure there's an error in those calculations somewhere but if anyone can be bothered finding it then they qualify as even sadder than I am.
I'll get my coat.

Anyone see the match report in the Evening times today, turns out that Varga came on for McGeady
Anyone else think Vargas new look reminds them of thompson.
Good research there at the Times.
For those putting down McGeady could you all get a grip hes a young home grown player with tons of talent. Lets actually look at what missing with his game.
He gets really Nervous at the start of games.
His lack of exp means he trys to hard make the clever pass when a simple one would do.
Hes a little light weight.
I mean is it just me or are these all things that will change in time. Let him grow as a player.
Can you imagine the money we would save if even 3 places in the starting line up are home grow.
I love AT but theres no fight when he comes off the bench he doesnt see it as a chance to get back in. Were as Maloney has forced his way in.
Heres to the future of home grow talent. and Huge aboard Strikers

Just in and rattled through the posts -
Senor Pablo Diablo- congratulations on getting 1st post inthe middle of the night
(sneaked that one in Paul....)
Tom64-
have you been sucking lemons all day-BAH ! HUMBUG ....:p
Kojo my old friend-totally agree with you on the promotion of c o n f i d e n c e
Some of our support want to take a good look at themselves-young McGeady might not have had a
blinder but he never hid and worked his butt off for the team. Reminds me of a young Swedish lad we had once upon a time....
By that I mean that even if Henke wasn,t playing to his best ,He always worked for the team.
Last night done nothing to dent the growing confidence I have in our new young team-in the words of Bryce Curdy early this morning-"bring on the hearts, the Hibs. the rangers- bring on the Spaniards by the score.......

I doubt anyone will have to tell Maloney what happened to Creaney, Burchill or Miller.
Young Shaun has a maturity beyond his years which shines through not only in his play and conduct on the field, but in his conduct off it. He seems to be a very level-headed individual.
I think McGeady is more in need of a guiding hand, he is already an extremely useful player but with the correct development, attitude and hard work he could be truly great.
Yesterday's experience will do him good, a lot of things didn't quite come off for him but he kept his focus and and applied himself excellently until his substitution.

Paul - I probably missed it on a previous blog, but what happened about the release of the MIH accounts?
Not that I'm trying to kick a man when he's down. :-)

Senor Pablo Diablo-
the guiding hand that will bring young Aiden to fruiton belongs to the best coach in Scotland at the moment-
Mr. Strachan.

MO CAMARA Composed at the back and keen to get forward. One woeful cross in the second period but otherwise impressive 7
evening times player ratings - so there you have it - mo made a feckin mistake - there have not been many players - never mind players who have been playing consistently well OVER THE PIECE -who are scrutinised like Mo. Thats why every run he makes, every cross he makes, every full speed back-track he makes compels me to shout (inside) "GIRUY" to his detractors.

Watched the game again last night after I got home. Didn't get to bed 'til after 2-up at half 7 again, but it's days like these when autopilot kicks in and the sheer adrenalin and ecstasy of last night kicks in.
Anyway, back to the beebs coverage, I still cannot believe Gordon Smith is still their no1 'pundit'. Aside from his hun leanings, he is as dull as the parliament channel on sky with no real insight into games whatsoever. Couple this with Pat Nevin alongside him-a man who has played at the very top level and who speaks eloquently and passionately about any game no matter who is playing. It was exactly the same with the road to Seville-I didn't get to any of the away ties and had to rely on TV. Gordon Smith trying to put a massive dampener on proceedings(as if!)with his monotonous ramblings and Douglie Donnelly trying, and failing, to muster any enthusiasm. All the while Paul Elliott is sitting between the two buzzing out of his head and running out of superlatives to heap on the Hoops.
It's a minor gripe, but surely Celtic TV is the way forward.
Credit where credit is due though-listen to the commentator and Iain McCall's reaction to Wee Shaun's wonder strike. McCall went as far as to say it was the best goal he has ever seen in a Celtic-Rankers game. Give Gordon Smith some of what you are on Iain!
I bet WGS went home after last night's game and watched some Taiwanese soccer on his satellite system(after he watched our game again)-what a football nut!
Can't wait 'til the 19th-if I keep going on about it someone tell me to sit down and shut it!
