I'd like to thank my mum, dad, little bro Evil Rhumm.........

so paul if the share issue isn't well enough supported then dd will have to buy the shares he is underwriting, which means he will own a percentage of the stock above the threshold at which he must make a bid, whether he wants to or not?
-
dontbrattbackinanger
Nope! It has been widely reported that DD has gained some sort of agreement that he doesn't need to field a takeover bid... not sure what they call it in all that financial jargon.
-
Paul
I thought Celtic had applied for some dispensation in relation to Double Diamond that would allow him more shares without having to make a bid?
PS
Deepheat! Deepheat!
Rub it in Bhoy it might be gone tomorrow.
We might still be a work in progress but I intend to enjoy basking in it for a wee while longer before getting back to the serious stuff.
On the back of the excellent sheepies banner perhaps we should raise the following?:

i'd just like to publicly distance myself from the comments made by baldymeister. i am NOT related to him at all. This is due to the fact that I have all my hair and a decent sense of humour.
anyway, where did this desmond take-over rumour come from? first i've heard it even mooted as a possibility......

I noticed that Celtic are going back to the AIM list. What are the advantages of doing this?

From previous thread.
BlogBhoy: Are you actually trying to drum up support for the 'Celtic Casuals' to be set up?
Other 'fans' around the country may feel the need to have a 'firm',
but not Celtic thank you very much.
Defend ourselfs by all means but this is just ridiculous.
Other 'casuals' are just mindless idiots looking to create violence for their own pleasure.
Do not stoop to their level.

ianinjesi, there's stuff been posted here before about this but as I understand it the two key differences between an Aim or FTSE listing are that the reporting requirements aren't as strict (which comes down to money) and the costs of maintaining a listing aren't as great (which comes down to money).
Also, Celtic have applied for a waiver so that DD does not have to launch a takeover bid if he ends up with >30%. However, support at the EGM is necessary before the rights issue can proceed at all.

Following on from Rangers highly succesful DVD release this time last year entitled "Remember, remember, 2 wins in November" they have decided to release a follow up entitled "Remember, remember they 2 wins in September???"

Help!! I'm new to all this shares milarley. I've applied twice now for an application form but no response. Is this normal. I'd like to buy some shares as I could afford it when they first came on offer.

Taken from London Stock Exchange
Celtic supremo Dermot Desmond has agreed to underwrite up to 10 mln stg of the share offer.
'Mr Desmond has indicated that he does not wish to obtain control of
Celtic by reason of his underwriting of the open offer,' Celtic said.
Accordingly, irrespective of the take up under the share offers, Desmond will not hold more than 49.9 pct of the voting rights of the company following completion.
However, if Desmond is required to subscribe for new shares in excess of his pro rata entitlements, it is possible that he will increase his stake with voting rights to more than 30 pct of the voting share capital.
This would mean he would be required to make an offer for the company.
Celtic also said that having consulted with its advisers, it intends to apply for cancellation of the listing of the shares on the Official List and transfer to AIM.

You mentioned a taunt from Lennon on the previous thread. Being part of the CD (Celtic Diaspora) I missed it over the weekend. I only read the Scotsman and Herald.
Can you expand?
-
Just a thought and I'll admit its completely obvious but if we do our job on Saturday (and I'm sure WGS will make sure we do) then by 5pm we will be 18points clear of Rangers and 10 points clear of Hibs.
Now that is racking up the pressure!
Would anyone have put a bet on after our first shambolic game at Fir Park that before the end of November that kind of scenario would unfold?
-
Gavil Guy
I think it may be a reference to an utterly stupid and typically crap headline in one of the redtops yesterday in which the headline writer had put "Your ROUT of it - Lennon Says Rangers are Finished"
Apart from being utterly inept it is also wholly inaccurate as Grahem Speirs says in his column today.
In fact according to the Sunday Herald and The Sunday Times the comments from Lenny were nothing like that because he said something more akin to:
"It would be arrogant of us to dismiss Rangers at this stage but 15 points is a helluva total to make up with other teams playing well"
As we are all becoming increasingly aware the agenda of the redtops is to sell papers at any opportunity and if they can do that with much contentious nonsense then so much the better for them.
I didn't buy the redtop concerned but seen the headline and graoned because I knew instinctively it would be mince!
It seems that they have only further convinced me that they are in fact parasites feeding off any organism they can to sustain themselves.

Shamrock, although last season provides be a painful reminder that we should never say never, I think the outcome of the Hibs/Rangers game on Sunday is of little relevance to us.
Hibs went out of their way on Saturday to prove that they are not a serious threat. I mean, to go in to a game knowing that a victory will put you 11 points ahead of Rangers and proceed to squander a two goal lead is just ineptitude of the highest order.
Nope, it's between us and Hearts and as Kojo points out, the Tyncastle sandcastle will soon be washed away with the tide!!
-
Hi Gavil Guy.
Shamrock diary has covered it, except that the line after "you`re rout of it" was Lennon taunts Rangers and of course our skipper did no such thing.
I saw on the official site that Maloney is doubtful for the Pars game.
Neither Zurawski or Sutton are ready to play in the reserves tomorrow.
Be careful BBJ!

Absoltely great article of the game. The truth is hard to find in the Scottish media but there now exists one man from whom you can depend upon.
-
I think the position regarding the share issue is that Celtic have applied to the Stock exchange for a waiver to the rule which obliges any shareholder holding in excess of 29.9% of the company shares to make an offer for the whole company.
The Stock Exchange have, I think, approved the application but it must be confirmed by 50% of Celtic shareholders who vote on the motion, hence the importance of either voting at the EGM or, if you are unable to attend, sending a proxy in favour of the resolution.
Dermot Desmond is not allowed to vote
-
Pat, that story is appalling and of course has nothing at all to do with one of the red tops deliberately misinterpreting the words Lennon used in his post match interview. As they did with Aiden McGeady a couple of weeks ago.
I'm also not stupid enough to think this is just anti Celtic - the fact that the Graham Rix situation went as far as it did was largely due to our beloved newspapers stirring the pot.
They simply don't seem to realise, or care, that while most people treat these headlines for what they are others treat them as the gospel truth and act (or react) accordingly.
However, with the BBC and MSP's involved this is very public so David Murray has yet another chance to loudly and publicly distance himself and his club from the people who do these things.
Will he take that opportunity? Don't hold your breath.
-
Sent my voting form away last week....hope I filled it out right....
Now just to buy some more shares........I hope I fill that in right.....
-
But why have they picked Neil Lennon and Aiden McGeady to misinterpret. They dont have anything in common do they...
-
Michael67-
Do I detect a hint of irony in your last post......?

-
Dontbrattback, as quarrybhoy has said:
The club are seeking permission from the shareholders to remove the requirement DD will have to make a takeover bid if he buys these shares.
I also believe he may be prevented from voting on this matter, as it involves him directly, so:
If we do not want a takeover bid (and we do not), then vote to remove this requirement. Unusually, without DD voting, the small shareholders will be in a position to prevent this happening – which would mean either the share issue does not happen at all, or DD needs to launch a takeover bid.
-
Cultsbhoy and Baldymeister.
Having read your posts from the last thread i couldn't agree more.
Delighted that WE ARE BETTER THAN THEM,but we still have a long way to go before i will be happy with Mr Strachans appointment.

I tuned into radio Scotland this morning.
They led with a sports exclusive that "Old Firm" fans had been involved i threatening the life of an Old Firm player on a fans website.
Why was is not ?"Rangers fans threaten Neil lennons life again"
As a child being British when Scotland qualified for the world cup was bad enough.
To the beeb reporters ,just tell the bloody truth.
You are a disgrace, along with the red tops who stated that Lenny had written of Rangers.
It was just pure lies.
-
Shamrock Diary/Gavil guy
This is the Lenny story in full from The hunday mail....as written by one Gordon Waddell.
CELTIC skipper Neil Lennon yesterday steered his side to their second Old Firm triumph in 10 days then told Rangers: You'll never catch us now.
The 3-0 rout at Parkhead opened up a massive 15-POINT gap between the Hoops and their bitter rivals.
John Hartson opened the scoring in the first half before Bobo Balde and Aiden McGeady pounced after the interval to all but kill off any hope Gers had of holding on to their league title.
And Lennon (right) insisted afterwards it would take a Celtic collapse AND a miracle run from Alex McLeish's men to turn things around. Now he reckons only Hearts or Hibs can stop the Hoops reclaiming the SPL crown.
Lennon said: "There would have to be a major disaster, a collapse from us.
"I wouldn't be so arrogant as to dismiss Rangers completely but 15 points is a hell of a gap for them to close. We'd have to lose at least five games and they'd have to win EVERY game.
"It's not impossible but it gives us a fantastic bit of leeway. However, we still have Hibs and Hearts breathing down our neck and it looks like they're not going away - in the short term at any rate."
Lennon refused to twist the knife into Rangers and insisted they HAD shown more fight for under-pressure McLeish than in their CIS Cup collapse 10 days ago.
Lennon said: "We knew Rangers had to improve from the last time and they did.
"But we raised our game to another level as well.
"With a bit of luck Hearts will drop points against Aberdeen and we can be sitting top on our own.
"We expected Rangers to put on a better performance. They still have some quality players and they proved that over the piece. They played with a bit of pride.
"We weren't as fluent in the first half as we have been but that's down to how Rangers played us.
"The game opened up in the second half and it was a great move that led to Bobo Balde's goal."
Lennon also admitted he'd welcome the signing of Roy Keane if Celtic decide to pursue the axed Manchester United skipper.
But the 34-year-old warned the Republic of Ireland man he won't be guaranteed a place if he swaps Old Trafford for Parkhead.
Lenny said: "Roy is 34 and everyone harps about the age thing but I haven't missed many games since I arrived.
"And if someone wants to come - not just Roy Keane, anyone - they'll have to play well to get a game."
Lennon saw red at the end of the last Old Firm league clash in August when he hounded ref Stuart Dougal after the 3-1 defeat.
But he has been on top form since returning from a ban and puts it down to the extra shifts in training.
He said: "I put in a lot of work when I was suspended.
"I did a lot of hard running and played three or four games in the reserves.
"It has given me eight to 10 per cent more in a game.
"I'm actually getting over the half way line now.
"I even charged down the goalkeeper once - although he sent me for a pie and chips when I did it"
Now as you can see there is absolutely no mention of the headline in the story......Mr Waddel up to his usual mischief making.
Apologies for reading the ragtops guys.... but as I make a living from selling them, it's hard not to have awee peek :-)

I really don't believe you guys. I'm pretty much speechless. Is it because he's ginger? Is it because he's short? Is it because he's smart? Just what is wrong with Gordon Strachan? Why won't you give him any credit and see what he's doing with our club? Personally I've never been more proud of my team, and I've been watching them since back in the days we used to get gubbed by Partick Thistle in cup finals. I had tears in my eyes on Saturday when the Willie Malley song started up, because for the first time in years I actually believed it. Celtic are special again. And I know everybody's going to say that's the worst Rangers team ever. Well maybe it is, or maybe it's the same team that won the title last year. Is Michael Ball really so good that the whole team collapse without him? Other than that I can't see the difference.
While I'm here I might as well throw in my two cents about Roy Keane. Watching soccer am the other morning the guy asked Ray Wilkins what he thought about it. His answer was fairly simple. "They've just handed Chelsea the league". That says it all as far as I'm concerned. Add that guy to this team and we could do some real damage in the CL next year. It's time to start believing again.
Hail Hail. First time poster, rip into me as much as you want.

Update on Shaun from the Ginger Maestro :) ....
Gordon Strachan is facing up to a striker shortage ahead of Saturday’s visit of Dunfermline after receiving confirmation that Shaun Maloney sprained an ankle in the 3-0 win over Rangers.
The in-form 22-year-old was withdrawn from the fray after twisting awkwardly under a challenge from Marvin Andrews and, with the severity of the damage having been ascertained this morning, is now facing a race against time to be fit for the SPL clash of top versus bottom.
Strachan told the Celtic website: “Shaun will be touch and go for the weekend and, at the moment, we’d have to look upon him as a real doubt. It's far from ideal given that we’ve three strikers out already, but what can you other than just get on with it?
“Sometimes you need to handle a wee spate of injuries like this but you’d certainly rather that they didn’t all come in one specific area of the team. That’s making things quite difficult.”
It could yet be that Chris Sutton, Maciej Zurawski - or even both – return to ease their manager’s worries before the week is out, but with neither pencilled in to play in tomorrow’s reserve match at the Excelsior Stadium, that remains far from certain.
“I’ve no idea at the moment whether they’ll be ready,” admitted Strachan.
“Zurawski’s now going full-out but it’s been a while since he’s played and we won’t put him in if the timing’s not right. Neither he nor Chris will be in the reserve team tomorrow, that’s for sure, so, again, it’s going to be touch and go.”
-
Welcome Ican’tbelieveit’snotceltic. I am 100% with you, keep telling it.
Criticism when it is due (and it was certainly due at the start of the season) should be followed by credit when it is due – and with twelve wins and a draw from thirteen games, credit is now due.
As I am sure you know, you cannot please all of the people…..
-
Lenny might not be so arrogant as to say what the hunday mail said he said, but I am. YOUR OF NO CONCERN TO US NOW RANKGERS. Unless you are drawn against us in the Scottish cup, an easy tie would suit us just fine. Anyone got money on the treble?. Odds will be getting cut hour by hour.
I can see Rangers getting beat by Porto on Wednesday. Apparently the Portugese are running scared that Oliver Bernard could return.
No Prso, the only one IMO that could get in the Celtic squad, I say squad possibly not starting 11. Lets face it what threat would they have had if Prso was out of the last two games, NONE.

Interesting to see that Van Nistelroy says that Roy Keane "was the most influential person in his career"
Sign the man now .. Keane I mean !!
-
weren't the bears quiet at work today eh?
of the ones i could find they all said they didn't watch it!! aye right!!
i thought we controlled the game without dominating it.
is that possible?
naka just gets better all the time!
he looks stronger as the game goes on.
i was keen to get in at half time 1-0 up as i felt GS would have a few words with them about the space Tfod were getting.
the 2nd half was a lot better and our intelligent passing was working as they were tiring.
i would've liked to have seen another goal or two but i thought the ref stopped the game too much for indirect free kicks to them.
that stopped the flow of the game and with shaun off injured we couldn't get into top gear.
regarding keane. i'm hoping someone asks the question at the egm.
kojo you insist that money is not an issue with keane. why is it an issue with stan?
ANY money used for keane should be used for keeping stan.
i'm beginning to think we're going to take any kind of offer for stan and hope keane will last a season and buy or bring thru someone who's not of the calibre of stan.
bad move!
if we get keane i would want him playing alongside stan, naka and wee shaun. lenny's playing great the now but keane would have to earn the right to dislodge him the now.
anyway GS might not be keane!!
ma jaickit's oan!!

Ican’tbeliveit’snotceltic Paul67 when WGS was appointed I thought okay lets see what happens, he was someone who when you listened to him seemed to have a love of the game and no little insight into it either. However, given the disaster of the opening games I was wanting him to go if we could get someone in who is better. In part that was no doubt due to the last two minutes of the last season, yes that had nothing to do with him but I was not in the mood to hang about after handing over the league.
Now we seem to be moving in a direction which few would have foreseen. We have as yet, like every other team won nothing yet, and we have to `tighten our helmets after every victory’ as the old Japanese saying goes in order to ensure we do.
As for Roy Keene the comments you make or echoed by Paul Lambert and others who know more than I’ll ever know about the game.
The press in general will do as the have done in the past and have a go at us already
some things have been said about how it might hold back the young players but if they have any sense they will watch listen and learn as Maloney and Beattie have done with regards to Larrson and Lubo, after all Roy Keane will not be in the first team for very long they can wait and in the waiting become better players via the education they could obtain.
The victory over Rangers was sweet as they all are, however, as I have said before you can’t win the last game only the next one. The week coming up could be a major turning point for us as we have Dunfermline at home while Hearts are at Motherwell and Hibs have Rangers. If these games go our way a blow will have been struck which might see Hearts collapse. I think it is important for us to have clear water between us and the rest going into the Jan transfer market as it will only strengthen PL’s hand in trying to get players in if he can offer the carrot of CL games.
No doubt all at Celtic will be looking beyond this season and looking at our strength with regards to Europe after all we will go straight into the CL proper if we win this years title, therefore, we need to be at our strongest and if Roy Keane comes we will be stronger in a position where we have little in reserve if Petrov and Lennon are injured or suspended.
-
emjay
the reason money is not an issue with Keane is because ManU are paying him and to my knowledge they are not paying Stan
-
usabhoy...how long will they be paying him??

ican'tbelieveit'snotceltic & Paul 67
If you read my post from yesterday's thread i think that you will find some well balanced comment on the progress that Mr Strachan has made since his disasterous start.
It is also peppered with praise.
However i want us to compete on a European level and win regularly as we did under MON.
ICBINC,Celtic are not yet special again.
If you want a true barometer of the standard of the SPL then look at the performances of the SPL clubs this season in Europe.
Mr Strachan has made great progress from the depths of where he took us.
You obviously share a great love of the club (as most do on this site). I love a man who wears his heart on his sleeve.
I also can remember having tears in my eyes, after Boavista,Anfield,Barcelona (twice),Celta Vigo,Stuttgart,Blackburn, and Valencia.
When we are achieving such results again ,then i will state that Celtic deserve the term special.
When he achieves this level of performance Mr Strachan will have my eternal thanks,as MON has now.
He gave me the most special footballing moments in my lifetime.
We are not facing the multi million pound Rangers sides of the rest of the Murray era.
I am delighted THAT WE ARE BETTER THAN THEM.
However i am not fooled into thinking that this makes us special in a footballing sense.
Did you see Barca on Sat night? They are special in a footballing sense.
Until then ,i remain unconvinced.
Celtic are indeed special in that we all love them dearly ,but i think you will find very few impartial observers who state that we are playing special football.
Hopefully that will change next season.
-
paul,quarrybhoy-thanks for the info.i was under the impression it was the stock exchange which set the rules, not the wishes of the shareholders.

My understanding is that they are paying him until June 2006 and if you read Kojo's posts he is saying that basically the deal is done, money is not an issue and the decision is down to Keane ??

the bookies obviously read Kojo'sposts as well!
-
maybe kojo is a bookie

Ican'tbelieveit'snotceltic, if you can't believe what's been written today it's just as well you weren't reading some of the really poor stuff that was around only a few months ago. It made our TGFITW title look like a complete joke.

Was anyone else gutted that the ref never gave the penalty in the dying moments on that foul on bbj?
Lenny would have taken the roof off if that hit the back of the net!!!

Evening Bhoys:
Had some bother since Saturday, but try as i might i just can't seem to get the smile of my face.
Saturday. Where to start!
Nakamura, and Petrov, deserve medals for the grit and determination they showed after such a horrific week's traveling.
Oh yes,and no little skill as well.
As others have said, after an hour Celtic closed the game out.Very professional!
Also is it me or does anyone else think that Thomson has slimmed down a shade, and looked a yard faster. All of the players put in a shift and mirrored WGSs words of Friday.
Tactically WGS called it right again.
When Rangers brought on Lovenkrands, the first thing he did was to take the ball right up to Telfer, and i'm sorry to say, left him for dead.
This was remedied almost immediately when after bringing on Agathe,he played him just in front of Telfer and the threat was snuffed out.Good tactical awareness.
One or two defensive lapses in the first half almost cost us dearly, but these were eliminated after the interval, and it's a long time since i have seen Rangers have to play so many square and back passes .
Lots of goodies on Sat. and i'm sure the frailties will have already been addressed on the training ground today!
Sometimes me and Kojo dissagree on some Celtic matters, but on the signing of Roy Keane we are in perfect harmony{name that tune NOEL]!
His signing will ease worries in a number of defensive and midfield positions in that he is a supremely adaptable player, and with Bobo off for a while after the new year he offers much needed cover in addition to that of Du Wei and Virgo.
DD. On this occasion i must offer my support to what the board are trying to do, and i for one will be there,no matter how small my shareholding, in order to help the motions through.
Hail Hail

Oregon bhoy - O'Donnell was my form teacher at St. G's. Some man, Celtic through and through, saw him a few years ago in the Celtic shop, well retired now.
The guy you are thinking of is (Jackie) McGillivary the other PT teacher who played for St Mirren, Kilmarnock and Albion Rovers. He emigrated to Australia when I was there. Got sent off one game for hitting Derek Parlane and we all cheered him into the gym ! Happy days ! Do you remember Matt Lynch the maths teacher who played for Celtic ? Died a few seasons back, hundreds at his funeral.
Now to this quiz thing. Owing to you lot being quizzed out and me running out of questions, perhaps it's best to start a weekly CQN quizon a Monday night. While away the dark nights and all that.
Tonight's teaser :
Name 19 european or south american clubs Celtic have played at home (Parkhead or Hampden) since 1970 in friendlies/testimonials ?
No english teams, no national sides eg Ireland.
There. Answers at 10-ish if you don't get them by then.

I remember Malky MacKay 'megging Klinsmann and scoring against Bayern. Not in the same move, mind you. Still, had to rub my eyes and make sure I wasn't seeing things.
Lothar Matthaus left the park wearing a Celtic jersey.
If only, sigh.....
-
Oregon bhoy - I didn't start St G's until 1977. I'm reliably informed the Clyde centre half McHugh from late 60's - early 70's was also a teacher there.
-
My memory is bad, but i didn't realise it was this bad, coz i cannot remember seeing half these teams, and i have only missed one home game in 20 years.
It had to be a 3-0 win against the hun i missed mind you! :o(
3-0 against the hun, now where have i heard that before.......
-
St.Anthony did we not play Boavista in a pre-season
f r i e n d l y ?
noel.
-
Noel - Boavista is incorrect but I agree with you re Godfather 3. Not a patch on the first 2.
-
Red Star Belgrade
-
Probably making this up now St. Anthony, but did we play Inter Milan in a friendly?
-
Lostrambling - Red Star Belgrade is 18. One left ! What a game Stojkovic had that day, Boxing day if I remember rightly.
Dick Byrne - Inter is incorrect.
-
How about China in the late 70s? If i remember correctly they were a China 11 as you could't play a national side.
-
Good shout Red Star, imagine forgetting that, although i do remember this game thankfully. Robert Prosinecki was only 18 at the time, and was outstanding. We were linked with their centre forward at the time too, Darco Pancev if i recall.
-
St.Anthony-
Vancouver Whitecaps ?
Tampa Bay Rowdies ?
noel.
-
Ardoch I think Red Star had half the Yugoslavian national team.
I remember standing in the Jungle with 2 mates and we all had hangovers. We agreed to give it until half time but stayed till the end , proper football!
-
Nearly Noel, nearly !
Someone should now get it shortly ..........
-
On a lighter note, lets hear your football claims to fame, the more obscure the better.
I'll start with i was the last person to sit on the managers seat in the dug out at the stadio delli alpi when Juventus won the league for the first time in 9 years by beating Parma 4-0. The last because during the after match pitch invasion, 2.5 seconds after i'd stood up, someone ripped it out and ran away with it!!
-
I am completely nonplussed that so many so- called fans are still questioning the wee man's appointment.
We are the best team in Scotland by far-all of his signings are doing exactly the job expected of them. The defence is,in general, rock solid.Minor mistakes by Telfer and Camara are magnified out of all proportion.I feel some of you want them to fail.
We are playing football which is a joy to watch.Cant say that about last year.
WGS seems to be getting the best out of Lenny and Stan who used to have a habit of disappearing for a few matches.BBJ looked a lot fitter and dare I say, skillful on Saturday.
My highlight from Saturday was the absolute delight on WGS's face after we scored. That was the face of A REAL CELTIC MAN.
-
Can anyone remember the friendly against Orlando?
The day we changed tops at half time to early 80s strip, then had the cheek to swap with the Americans.
-
st antony.
Orlando Lions, 1988/89?
I remember Celtic coming out for the 2nd half wearing tops from circa 1980. At the end of the match, the sides swapped shirts - don't think the old board wanted new shirts swapped!
-
There is only 1 Red Star game worth talking about :-)
-
Lost rambling, Firsbyhoop - Orlando Lions is correct, part of the deal to bring Alan Rough to Celtic and a low croed of 7000-ish. 4-2 to celtic.
That's all 19 - I really thought that one would run and run !
John H - Agree gully re Gordon.
Jinkyredstar - You too are correct.
Here is the final list :
71 Feyenoord 1-1, 2003 2-3
72 Nacional 3-1
72 Kiev 1-1
73 Penarol 3-1, 1976 3-0
74 Benfica 3-3 (4-5 on pens)
85 Hamburg 1-2
88 Cruzeiro 4-2
88 Orlando 4-2
89 Moscow 2-2
89 Ajax 1-0
94 Flamengo 2-2
97 Bayern 1-2, 2000 1-2
96 Sporting 2-2, 2005 2-2
96 Barca 0-1
97 Parma 1-1, 2002 2-1
97 Roma 1-0
00 Bordeaux 2-4
04 Seville 1-0
Phew, that's another one over, apologies if any scores incorrect. More fun and frolics next Monday.

It doesn't really matter if was a real Celtic man when he joined us.
I don't believe Stein,Dalgish,McGrain, Willie Wallace,Lambert,John Robertson or Walford.
Were Celtic men when they joined us.
Mr Strachan has the opportunity to win his detractors over.
As Jock Stein said before he left the club " unlike any other Celtic manager i cannot say that Celtic were my first love. But what i can say is that they will be my last and my undying love."
Where you came from doesn't matter its what you do that counts.
He is winning the battle to win me over just now.
However we have to win in Europe regularly for that to happen.
-
St Anthony!
You said European or South American!
Tut tut, that was very naughty!
-
John H, Tinytim - Biggest dissapointment for me at the weekend was that every media pundit concentrated on McLeish and no one will give the wee man any credit for turning the good ship around.
Still early days but he has my vote and I was a cynic at the start.
-
Senor Pablo Diablo - My humblest apologies, slip of the wrist when typing. Didn't stop you lot from getting it though !
-
Well, I was totally stumped after about the first 10 anyway.
I'll look forward to next Monday's quiz!
-
A real Celtic man is one who regardless of background gives his all in the pursuit of all things CELTIC!
WGS is that man!
We have moved on,he has everyone behind him or at least by this stage he should have!
Roy Keane will be his next acquisition.
As someone said earlier,WGS also had a full scale run in with Ferguson . RK will come in and blend brilliantly with NL,Stan and all the rest.
He will respond to all of WGSs instructions, and you know there will only be one winner thereafter.....You're right CELTIC!
Hail Hail

Edward, can I ask an honest question? Do you and other semi-intelligent Rangers supports feel you are being taken for fools?
I am of course refering to the Paul Le Geun story. David Murray has clearly been briefing the BBC and Chick Young in particular, on the managerial situation.
I must say that when I heard it, it gave me pause for thought. "Paul Le Geun", I mused. "Things can't be as bad as we thought down at Ibrox. An excellent manager with a good track record would not join a sinking ship unless promised a decent transfer kitty".
No doubt you and many other Rangers supporters had similar thoughts.
As it turns out, however, there is no truth in it whatsoever. All it did was to keep some negative Rangers headlines off the back pages for a day. Furthermore, according to the BBC, Mr Le Geun "will probably join another club at the end of the season; possibly Real Madrid". So in essence you are supposed to believe this is a hard luck story and you were pipped by one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Time will tell. But if you end up like Hearts i.e. are promised the earth but end up with a Graham Rix type manager, surely this is yet more evidence that Murray is taking you for a mug?
-
Paul,
Some seem to be doubting our team's progress. We are a work in progress, of course. But we have made great progress from last season. We are playing football the Celtic way for a start. Thanks Mr Strachan.
-
St Anthony.
Thats some encyclopedia of Celtic data that you have.
I also admired Mr Strachans appointment of Agathe to counter Lovestodive.
I was bricking it however everytime Namouchi paired up on Telfer for an aerial battle.
Rangers had 11 shots at goal we had 3.
Better sides will hurt us.
But WE ARE BETTER THAN THEM.
-
st.anthony - I don't want to question the Bamber Gascoigne of CQN but last time I looked Orlando wasn't in South America! Not to worry, it was a great question and brought back some fine memories. I remember Kenny scoring a fabulous goal against Kiev in 1972 - 1-0 to the Celts.
Re our manager, doing a fabulous job and exceeding my expectations. The real difference as far as I am concerned is the fitness of the team. Roy Keane? Yes please!
-
FAO Estaio on previous thread
Was in the Tolbooth Bar when the windows were put in by the manky mob.

Nothing surprises me regarding their DIGNIFIED following or the actions of Glasgows finest men in blue!
Hope you are ok

The ex-Clyde player you're looking for is John McHugh, who formed a fairly unformidable Shawfield central-defensive pairing with Joe McGoldrick. With Eddie Anderson (groan!) at right back, Eddie Mulheron at left back and Tommy McCulloch in goal.
Mulheron's claim to fame was getting sent off at Ibrox for booting Colin Stein up the ArseneWenger. I think Stein was sent off in that game, too (about 1969). Mulheron then emigrated to South Africa where, I believe, he was banned sine die for some more naughtiness. I'm your man for Bully Wee trivia!
As for Saturday, McLeish banked on getting Namouchi in behind Nakamura and Ricksen in behind McGeady. But our two wee flair players tackled them to a standstill - then won the game at the other end.
It was: The day our wide Bhoys became men!

Thanks for the quiz - excellent stuff as always and it struck me how good some of those teams were who have visited us pre-season or in some cases during the winter break when we had it.
Anyone else like to see say Barca, Roma and say Benfica coming for pre-season next summer instead of Leeds (God help us) and games against Leicester and Fulham.
No dis-respect but I'd rather see an unfit (but trying to get back to match fitness) Ronaldhino or Francesco Totti than watch Mark De Vries, Big Rab and a number of Leeds players I've never even heard of strutting their stuff at CP.
Maybe the powers at be will help us get some strong opposition - even someone like Dynamo Kiev who are well in to their season at that point in time. If they can get the schedule to come over that would be an excellent work out and really help us on our way to match fitness.
-
Hi folks.
It looks like the 'Old Firm' tag is causing us trouble tonight. For those of you that missed it earlier there was a report on BBC Scotland about Follow Follow banning three members after Saturday's game for posting death threats aimed at Lennon.
The Administrators on Come On The Hoops chose to issue a statement distancing the Celtic bulletin board from the issue as one of the 'talking heads' on the BBC Report had referred to the 'Old Firm's fans' as having this problem. It appears that this statement was ineffectual as FootyMad - the company hosting both message boards - have closed both down tonight. Looks like we are being tarred with their brush as usual.
-
St.Anthony-
thanks-cracking question-you have a job for life.
In my opinion-if it hadn,t been for the international break and we had played rangers the saturday after the 2-0 victory-we would have taken six from them.
Would it really have mattered?
No.
But it would have felt really good!
Was this bloke at the game on saturday ?
noel.

I think the shots on goal statistics can be very misleading. Of their 11, only Namouchi's header had me worried. They had no other clear goalscoring opportunities, the rest were half-chances which I agree could have been put away by better players, but even the best miss chances sometimes. Why aren't the press talking up our 100% conversion rate? That's clinical finishing.

Evening fellow CQNer's
just wondering if anyone could help me out a tad...
I'm heading off to Las Americas in Tenerife tomorrow, and was wondering if anyone knows a pub that will show the Dunfermline game at the weekend? Thanks if anyone can help :-)
another wee favour, does anyone have a link to the Barca goals on Saturday?
Cheers again ;-)

Marzepans,
According to the administrator of FollowFollow, the culprits were, wait for it, one Rangers fan and TWO Celtic fans. Unbelievable!
-
Marzepans
According to the BBC website, FF moderator Mark Dingwall has claimed that of the three people involved, one was a Rangers fan and two were Celtic fans!?
!?
-
Marzepans, beat me to it.
I dunno what to think.
-
Sorry, firsbyhoop!
I'm really not with it this evening, I should pack up and go to bed.
-
Senor Pablo Diablo,
No worries. At least I now know I wasn't seeing things!
-
Regarding the misinterpretation of Neil Lennon in the red tops.
It takes two minutes to make a complaint to the press complaints commision.
Ive already done it, slurs like these add fuel to the idiots who make death threats etc to our captain. (if they need fuel that is)
-
What about our new" slimline BBJ "?
Looks like Mr. Strachans training regime is having its benefits for big John.
Saturday was the most mobile I have ever seen the big man.
He has lost weight or turned it into muscle but he is looking fit.
After johns succesive back operations a few of us may have had doubts if he would ever return to full fitness-he has.
I think a few weeks ago it was mooted on here- that if the Karren Brady administered Birmingham City would offer £5,000,000 in the January window, they could have him.
No chance.
John Hartson is a natural born striker.
He is an instinctive striker.
He has regained his fitness and his mobility.
He will score 20-30 goals a season wherever he goes.
He is going nowhere.
His movement , link play and his handling of kyriakos was a joy to watch on saturday.
His celebrations for Bobo and Aidens goals was brilliant to see.
He loves playing with Celtic-his private troubles would have happened where ever he was.
What would be the current value of a 20-30goal striker in the premiership ?
Considering that a striker of that level is going to guarantee either safety from relegation or a place in Europe, depending on the rest of the teams capabilities.
Who cares ?
We are going to need him for next seasons Champions League.
If we have to lose two it is looking more and more like Alan Thompson-whom I,ve always been a fan of-and the more and more injury prone Chris Sutton.
Your opinions ?
noel.

-
-
tinytim,I agree that WGS will need to prove himself in the CL,maybe an away win will help calm the doubters as not even MON managed it.
Roy Keane as back-up to Stan and Lenny? Hmmmm. I love Lenny but if both he and Keane are on top of their game there is only one first-choice.What an excellent problem to have.Delighted to see tonight that Hoddle and Bruce seem to think a deal has been struck already.
Noel,I was quite critical of BBJ and felt we should offload him after his performances last season. What a difference in him now and an improvement I didn't expect to see.On Saturday he was a perfect example of how to lead a forward line and was as mobile as I've ever seen him.
Increasingly,Sutton's continued absence due to injury and Thommo's lack of form push them to the front of the queue in terms of saleable assets.
BankieBhoy
-
noel90 - John is our best goalscorer and defenders hate playing against him. As I noted earlier, the team are a lot fitter this season and JH is looking good. It is inconceivable to me that we would sell him. As far as Alan Thomson and Chris Sutton are concerned, I still think that they both have a contribution to make. They are very experienced and CS in particular is an intelligent player and in my opinion he would be a big loss at this stage of our development.

-
In terms of BBJ - I always thought him indispensable - even in his 'super size me' form. Fat he scores goals - slimmed down he scores goals and makes a contribution to the overall game. So slimmed down is best but not essential.
Roy Keane could play with Lenny and Stan if he or lenny took a 'sweeper's role'?
I still maintain Sutton should go (albeit with immense saddness on my part) as Beattie and macij are future partners up front for Shaun Maloney. Maloney is a new breed of forward -potentially a Michael Owen for celtic as his finishing improves. In my mind SM has to be number 1 in our strike force as he has leadership, guile, speed, and all round great play, and as we were remined last week - an awsome shot. Cometh the time cometh the man. Well done Shaun!!
-
What price BBJ if Peter Crouch went to Liverpool for...£7Mil?
-
Anyone with Setanta switch to TFOD TV phone in it's hysterical.
Wullie 'Glasgow Rangers' Henderson "We need 30 players out and 30 class player in?".
"Glasgow Rangers have always been successful and will be again?"
"David Murray will put in £Millions for the new manager of Glasgow Rangers?"
I don't think the wee man has sobered up from the 60,s

Celticbhoy, I have watched your comments on Gordon Strachan with interest as they have dipped and rose.
TinyTim, I read and noted your comments on GS yesterday.
If you note my comments his stewardship I also accept that Europe will be the real test. For now, though, we need to ‘park’ Europe, and judge the man on what he is producing for us at the moment.
GM, I am thinking along your lines:
The media have been hung out to dry with the Paul Le Guen story. Sorry business.
Parkheadcomesalford, I agree, some want/need instant gratification. The ‘term work in progress’ might not be animated enough.
St Anthony, excellent quiz tonight, congratulations. Even better for your deliberate mistake.

Crouch has scored 2(?) goals all season.
Morientes-£15,000,000-how many goals.
Robbie Keane how many ?
francis jeffers-no-sorry its strikers we,re talking about..
James Beattie - £6,000,000
how many?
Michael Owen £15,000,000-how many?

He will be 31 in April,so you would be lucky to get £2mil.

Canny wait.

Leabgarrow, and everyone else for that matter:

My best advice: only invest money you can afford to write-off.
Hope the new job is going well.

Gordon-10.05pm-
I,ve been a fan of Suttons as well and there have been big holes in the front line when he wasn,t there.
This season however, he has been absent more than he has played and with our changing style of football he hasn,t been missed.
His attitude this term seems to signal that he needs a new challenge.
Manchester United maybe ?

Hi Paul,
GM 8.55 :- To be honest I should know better than to listen to the BBC, it is in the same league as the red tops when it comes to sports news. Who we will eventually get I have no idea but I would have to say we are no longer able to attract one of the top drawer managers. To be honest right now there are no outstanding candidates I would get exited about. Though no doubt when someone is appointed they will immediately become world beaters :)
-
If you count up Suttons appearances over the past two and a half seasons i don't think you would fill a full season.
If we are to lose anyone he is first out on my list, purely because of time lost.
-
JohnG
Two of Chris Sutton's major injuries were actually caused by Celtic players.
His performance at Tannadice a few weeks ago was tremendous and he was the one player I didn't want injured before TFOD games, little did we know how bad they would be.
As I posted last night why are we not allowed to have a strong squad? We will need players like Sutton & Thomson with their CL experience next year. If we were to qualify for the second stage we would make more money than we would get for selling them!
CaltonTongues
-
I understand the reluctance to move on any of our current squad.
The facts are though that if we are to bring fresh blood, in we will have to unload some of the top earners.
CS has during his time at the club played his part to the full, and if i had to guess he is one that WGS will not want to lose, but the current state of finances according to others better qualified,on here will probably be the deciding factor

David Murray
I met a traveller in the Jock Stein Stand
Who said -- "two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in Edmiston Drive ... near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lips, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal these words appear:
My name is David Murray, King of Spin,
Look on my Works ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away." --

Agathe, Varga and Thompson are the highly paid senior players I feel we could live without - this could release funds for a CL paced right-back
I agree with others that replacing Hartson or Sutton with players of similar quality and experience would be very expensive and they seem now to be fully committed to the Celtic cause as witnessed by their vastly increased fitness levels (injuries aside)

Hi Paul,
PeatBlog 11.31 :- Fair enough I set myself up for that one :-) perhaps times have changed, but I would have to say that until the recent financial disparity between top English teams and Rangers and Celtic then we would have had a chance of getting a manager with a decent record in trophy winning terms. paradoxically the managers I would count as top notch who have already served at Ibrox don't fall into this category, these would be Mr Struth, Mr Waddel, (borderline but a European win counts for a lot) Mr Smith, (he didn't do it in Europe but for Rangers did everything asked of him with the exeption of his last season) Looking at that list it makes me realise the paucity of managerial talent that practised it's trade in Scotland. If you don't mind me asking in return, who would you consider to be Celtics outstanding managers?, I have no doubt of whom everyone will pick for first choice but would be interested in who else is mentioned.
-
As others see us:
Just back in from a fantastic weekend in Tuscany and have spent the evening catching up on the posts.
Anyway I watched the game with a couple of neutral Italians and their view was that they were surprised by the intelligence in Celtic's play (they were expecting 90 mph stuff) but that in the first half a decent European team would have scored 1 or 2 against us. They also thought Nakamura's booking was a joke (considering Steven Thompson wasn't booked) and that it was a referee trying to balance out the bookings in a derby match to show that he had not favoured either side. My Italian friends also thought we should have had a penalty at the end when Hartson was pulled down.
And the one player they raved about? Guys who watch the likes of Totti, Shevchenko and Del Piero on their televisions every week?
Aiden McGeady.
-
EdUrs,
fight fire with fire eh! The benchmark for scottish old firm managers should really be based on success in europe IMO. The league would/is normally contested between us/you (well until now anyway). I would say that although Walter Softies achievements domestically (albeit at great financial cost) are greater than MoN's, he certainly didn't gain the same prestigious scalps that MoN enjoyed during his tenure.
There's also Mr Stein, but Im sure you already expected that answer.

Edward, if Rangers appoint a 'rookie' manager, I am going to change my prediction to 'two generations of Glasgow domination'.

Since Willie Maley I think we have only had 2 outstanding managers, Jock Stein and Martin O'Neill. Both took us to European finals and had a handy knack of getting victories against Rangers. Success in Europe and success over Rangers is what an outstanding Celtic manager has to deliver.
Billy McNeill should get an honourable mention but we never really made Europe sit up and take notice when he was in charge.
I'm hoping next season that Gordon goes some way to joining Jock and Martin in our estimations.

Kojo 11.44 :- Intelligent advise is always welcome and one of the attractions this site holds for me is the variety of outlooks. While I wouldn't, or more probably couldn't use the same words as you sadly I find nothing I can disagree with in the points you make, Like any good paper there is nothing in it that can't be backed by fact.
PeatBlog 12.09 I have to agree on your point referring to the differing reputations involved with Mr Smith and Mr O'Neil, apart from the European run I would say that Mr O'Neil rebuilt a bad team, Mr Smith took over an established team. Strangely I feel they both had one fault in common, they held on to a team a year too long.
Noel 90 :- A strange way of thinking on it lol, in my lifetime I think I would go for Mr D White

I find it strange that Davy White is bottom of your list, when you have John Greig as an ex manager.
I well remember a 1968 game at CP where a D White side took us apart winning 4-2. In fact I think the only time we beat you that 68 69 season was in the cup final. Unfortunately I don't think Davie survived that defeat.

With only getting to watch the games on TV these days, it can be hard to really follow how players are progressing.
I must admit, McGeady looks like he has an extra yard or two of pace, he looks stronger and fitter.
Maloney too has surprised me - good on him.
and WGS has surprised me by playing 3 lightweights against Rangers - good on him too.
But i don't think we should get too carried away guys because this is the worst Rangers team I have seen, bar none.
And as an earlier poster mentioned the run to Seville, does anyone believe the current Celtic team are capable of getting to a Uefa final? I don't think so. We don't have a Larsson up front (of course almost impossible to replace) and we don't have as solid a defence. On several occasions, we were opened up by a poor Rangers outfit.
I think we've made great strides replacing MON's ageing side but we are a long way from a team capable of:
beating Juve 4-3
beating Liverpool 2-0 away
etc

Thanks Paul, the job feels more 15 points in front than 15 points behind at the moment, I hope it stays that way!!
Having already bought shares with the heart, to buy any more will have to be with the head. I'll mull it over.

Hello fellow Celts,I think it wil be lights out for mcleish tonight, I see a heavy loss on the horizon, what would be the point of keeping him on?
