Strachan strikes a serious tone at Press conference- it might be him in trouble next week

I have heard people rationalise these next two games against Rangers and refer to the league game the most important. With the challenge from Hearts and Hibernian refusing fade I tend to agree with this, however, there is a bigger picture to look at.

‘New-Celtic’ have yet to win a big game.

They were unprepared for Bratislava and were robbed of their full compliment of players at Ibrox. The tactics were wrong against Hearts, which brings tomorrow into sharp focus.

Rangers are a team divided. The dogs in the street know this will be their worst league finish in twenty years, but that does not tell the whole story. They performed solidly to subjugate ten-man Celtic in August, beat a clever Porto team and should have taken a point away from home against Inter Milan.

The term ‘should have’ is written all over their season. They should have beaten Artmedia, they should have beaten Livingston, they should have beaten Aberdeen and they should have beaten Inverness. Some of their players cannot even raise a smile after scoring; such are the divisions in the camp.

Tomorrow, all such divisions will be put to one side; they will redouble their efforts in an attempt to rescue their own season by eliminating Celtic from the CIS Cup.

If Celtic approach this game with anything short of 100% concentration, if the will to win is not ripping out of them; they will lose. Rangers need is greater and you can guarantee they will leave the field having given their all.

If Gordon Strachan has prepared his players well enough, Celtic will win, and will have the satisfaction of despatching a Rangers manager from his post. We have the opportunity to inflict a disorientating defeat on Rangers, something no Celtic team have been in a position to do since that game in May 1979, when our fourth goal secured the league.

Back then it took Rangers seven years to recover, a period during which Celtic were bereft of vision but still maintained a comparative advantage.

Martin O’Neill has delivered Celtic into a position of comparative advantage for the last five years, even if his record during this period was not without blemish. If Strachan can build on this period of domination his job will get increasingly easier.

The manager was in serious mood as he contemplated the dog-eat-dog reality of football in Glasgow. His only recent contact with his friend Alex McLeish has been a text message discussing an event they are both due to attend.

When asked to comment on the possibility that a Celtic victory could cause problems for McLeish his very serious reply was: “I might be in trouble next week”. I believe our manager has picked up a scent.

The usual questions we see before Rangers games surfaced questioning the future of key players; on this occasion, Stillian Petrov’s future at the club was affirmed. Despite newspaper reports, Strachan denied there had been a bid for the player and added: “Stillian wants to stay and we want him to stay”.

As usual he refused to comment on players the club were looking at, other than to say that they were looking at players, both for this summer and for next.

Chris Sutton will definitely not be ready for tomorrow.

After the press conference, as the Japanese journalists gathered to compare notes, a man from China despaired at how little progress their “national hero” Du Wei appeared to be making in Scotland.

I get the feeling the Chinese football public are desperate to see him play for Celtic – and succeed.

Concerns over Du Wei will need to wait for a couple of weeks; starting tomorrow, the players, manager and every one of us with a ticket will need to raise our game to ensure the win.

Remember to let them know:

Fourth in the SPL
you're Fourth in the SPL
you're Fourth in the SPL
you're Fourth in the S.P.L.

I have never looked forward to an Old Firm game as much! We all know that Rangers will raise their game, but looking at our previous performances, we have the ability to win. I'm only sorry that Sutton will be unavailable.

I for one do not see Rankgers upping their game so to speak.(can they).

I do however see them trying to kick Celtic of the park. Rae could be back for them in midfield and we all know what that means, cheating, diving, gouging, hands in face all of that. No it is Rankgers who should be worried that Celtic do not up our game, it could become quite frightening for the boys in blue. If and I stress if we have a strong referee ( have my doubts) then I can see us winning comfortably, 3-1,( head on the block or what lol).

Remember specsavers brigade the bhoys from the land of the rising sun will be watching you.

    Paul

Should have taken a point in the San Siro?????

Inter missed a penalty, had a perfectly good goal disallowed and missed an open net. It should have been 4-0. On the subject of that game I wonder how Rangers internal investigation into the singing of the party songs from the official party is going?

Anyway, completely agree with everything else. The hungrier side usually comes out on top in these games and they will definitely be up for it so we'll need to match that.

On the subject of Du Wei I would get the game on the 19th out of the way then start introducing him from then on. I think I'm right in saying Bobo will be on African Cup duty in January so it would be good if Du Wei was ready to step in then.

If we keep our discipline and play our passing game in the face of their agression thre will only be one winner.

McGeady/Thomson? We are at home and should look to dictate so i think Aiden is the better choice he is also in form.

Off topic but I was one of the many who bought shares during the first share issue costing me around £880 i think.I have received around £12 a year in dividens since and recently agreed to the dividens for shares.

However I don't know what my original "investment" is now worth, not that they will ever be sold but passed onto my son.

My point being this was given as I believed in Fergus and in celtic's future and I could afford to lose it if things went pear shaped.I did not take up any of the other offers but am considering this latest share issues for the same reasons.

Fans should enter into shares with their eyes open.

Could anyone update me about the present worth of my original "investment" and also let others know what it could mean for them.

    I'll say it again bhoys:

Time for both feet on the ground!

If i was a gambler,i would bet a draw tomorrow.

In all of my years{and i'll be going into that in some detail later tonight NOEL}, i can hardly recall a time when so many people were taking things for granted.

Throughout Jock Steins time we beat and were beaten by good and, rank rotten Rangers sides.

These games are no formalities, however i do like the way WGS seems to have the opposition guessing as to his line up,and therein may lie the upper hand.

The vistors have no idea what way we will line up and what formations we may deploy.

WGS it seems is a canny wee guy!

Remember CONFIDENCE is the bi word not overconfidence and with a calm measured approach to tomorrow all will be well.

And i for one canny wait to get right intae them.

Aye, thats ma coat on the shoogly nail.

    nickhealy-

are you not aware of the unwritten rule that once you have triumphed in the race for 1st post you shall not enter the same race till 20 new posts have passed-shame on you :P

Ihave to agree with Terry O,Neill that Aiden done enough to keep his place for tomorrow night ahead of Alan Thompson-just.

Alan Thompson has always been a big player for us in these games(when he has managed to stay on the pitch)-however I think the massive improvement in young Aidens performance on sunday(and lately in the reserves) shows just how effective a coach Mr.Strachan is.

Towards the end of last season I think young McGeady had started to lose his way in the side where it seemed most of our big players were also struggling.

Our new style of football seems to be helping him and, against falkirk,he seemed rejuvenated.

Mr. Strachans work with our upcoming youth players(coutesy of Tommy Burns and Willie McStay)will come to fruition towards the end of next season when ,hopefully ,with The Champions League Trophy back where it belongs, they will herald the dawn of A New Celtic Dynasty.

I'm quietly confident about tomorrow night's game.

Key word- QUIETLY- dont want to give the office Gers too much to bite onto.

Have to agree with Martybhoy too, Paul, Rangers definately didn't deserve a point from the San Siro, Inter dominated the game at a walking pace.

If we can hold our nerve and stick to the script we should overcome them with relative ease. The potential banana skin is if they start to kick out we retaliate... dont rise to it bhoys!

    Hope we go with

    ---------Boruc-------------

    Telfer-Balde-McManus-Camara

    Naka-Petrov--Lennon-McGeady

    --------BBJ-Maloney--------

Off subject a bit, Paul67 I'm still waiting on my Share application form and prostectus in the post can you run an advice thread in the coming days so I can make sure I've crossed my t's and dotted my i's?

    Here we go...

I believe that we will win a closely matched cup tie.

I know that we are by far the better team and confidence is far higher in our camp, but the person that will decide how this game pans out will be the man in black.

I fear that this will be a chance for some dodgy decisions to wind us up and give them the excuse they are looking for to send a player or two off and kick start their season.

    Again.

However, should we A) get an impartial referee (unlikely)
or B) not react poorly to the heavy handed/off the ball kicking we'll recieve. Then I think the good ship dignity FC will sink without a trace.

I hope for option B. If Gordon can get the Bhoys to be in the correct mindset, I think we can be patient and really give them a going over.

I'd go as far to say we have the potential to put half a dozen past them regardless of Klos.

This of course is dependant on Kyriakos(sp?) not being able to do his usual bear-hug wrestling moves without punishment.

    Hail Hail all

I should have made it clear that I believe we CAN give them the big doing they deserve, but that with the MIB trying their hardest, we may have to settle for a 1-0 win with 37 mins of extra time... in each half.

I firmly believe that if WGS sends the players out with the correct attitude, we will win convincingly.

We should leave Thommo on the bench as he is in danger of becoming a liability when TFOD decide to wind him up and kick Naka.

The attitude on Sunday at Falkirk was spot on. Before the game I was concerned the players might believe they only needed to turn up in order to win, WGS ensured this was not the case and the outcome was a relatively straightforward victory. More of the same please.

The big concern about tomorrow is the tackles (first few especially) from Alex Kray and the others on Nakamura in particular and whether the ref will do anything about it. What am I saying - of course he won't!

If we can get through the game with our best eleven available remaining on the pitch, and not off injured or red carded for retaliation, then we could romp it.

    JonG,
Game is played to a finish, so no chance of a draw. If we play at the right tempo, there is no chance of this even being close. (:-0)

    RE: Pienaar:
As I said on the previous thread, he is a tanner-ba' player who would be fielded on the flanks, so no chance of him replacing Petrov. Just a predictable Daily Ranger non-story written by a Rangers fan on the eve of an Old Firm game. I'm just surprised that anyone still falls for this rubbish.

    BlantyreKev,
Jim O'Brien was overlooked by Scotland Under-19s for a tournament but was then contacted by Ireland. I'd class it as a "career" decision. He got a little bit of flak for it last season after scoring twice in the Youth Cup Final but I'd assume it will be forgotten about until he appears in the first team squad. Which could be in a year or two's time, as he's a talented lad.
At present, Scott Cuthbert, Charlie Grant, Simon Ferry, Michael McGlinchey and Ryan Conroy are all in the running for places with Scotland Under-19s.

Pienaar doesn't seem to think he sould be played on the flanks. From the official Ajax website:

Q: "Steven, you have played many different positions with Ajax. Which one is your favourite?"

A: "The number-10 position. I like it when it is crowded and that is often the case in the middle. I can play other positions, but then I have to adapt."

The "No.10 position" is reserved for lightweight midfielders who don't want to tackle or chase back, such as Juninho or Berkovic. There is no room for one of them in Strachan's favoured 4-4-2. As Thin Lizzy said when they first saw a back page "exclusive" in the Daily Ranger the day before an Old Firm game: "Don't believe a word."
Before anyone asks, I don't have a clue who Bobo's pal is. But he does look big, doesn't he?

For those predisposed to predicting the score, it is probably worth considering that Boruc, Telfer, McManus, Camara, Nakamura, McGeady, and Maloney i.e. 7 out of our probable starting 11 are very, very inexperienced when it comes to handling the dark side.

Make up your own minds if this is good or bad, but it certainly makes me wary.

Apart from the obvious differences between ourselves and the Orcs there perenial "divine right of victory belief" and smugness differentiates wildly from our view that even we are clearly better and in better form there are still concerns over beating a distinctly average team.

Over the years how many Huns do you know when leading us by 12 points had any fear about facing us? Yet we always give ourselves doubts. We need to grasp the nettle and have a belief that we are the better team and have the will to show it. I am fearful if things are not going well instantly tomorrow there will be murmurs from the stands.

Even our few and far between victories in the 90's are poor examples of underdog victories as all the important ones were at the underdogs (us) home.

Old Firm games are special, hard to predict what exactly happens but more often than not the best team does win. Under MON the exception of the CIS Cup Final in 2003 there are not may games where we can seay we have been significantly better than them and came out on the losing team.

  • At 08/11/05 17:18, Blogger Ardoch said…

Nakamura, McGeady, and Maloney in the same team makes for a lightweight side in a fixture that requires strength and no less courage.

Wee Sean can hack the physical, he has davie proven that, but the others leave me with doubts. Lets face it, Naka is struggling with the physical side of scottish football, and an old firm game is not for passengers. These 2 games will make or break him.

CelticBhoy, JohnBhoy & Lawlerm - I posted on the last thread
'Pienaar would be a first choice in a World 5-a-side team. Excellent close control, very quick feet. Ajax have been playing him on the right side of midfield. He doesn't look happy there & I don't think he covers enough ground to play there. Flatters to deceive at times but when it comes off (see Ajax's fourth goal in their last CL game) it's good to watch. Not to be compared with Petrov - more lightweight. I would be more interested in the other Ajax player who has announced he will not renew his contract at the end of this season - Hatem Trabelsi, the Tunisian right back. A real class act & a wonderful athlete to boot. Unfortunately I recall Arsenal were interested in him a while ago.'

Pienaar is not a wide midfield player & is not a potential replacement for Lennon.

There seems to be a lot of talk about leaving out our better/skillful players and replacing them with inferior/stronger players.

To my mind this would be playing right into Rangers' hands.

If we are indeed the better footballing team with the better football players then this is the route (football) to go down. Attempting to copy this Rangers team will get us nowhere.

Stating the bleedin’ obvious here but if we can keep Prso out wide as much as poss, and not give away too many free kicks that allow Kyriagos (sp?) to do his ‘wrestle the marker out of the way at the back post and head the ball back into the middle’ manoeuvre – seriously how often has he got away with that one this season alone -we should be OK defensively.

Midfield have got to refuse to take the Alex Rae (if playing) bait and concentrate on out passing them.

Upfront BBJ has to make inroads towards the 200. Throw in a Naka free kick (25 yards) and a Petrov lung burster and we’ll be fine.

    Hands starting to shake already

    Hi Paul,
QOTSA75 :- All going well I'll be there, the banner idea sounds interesting, I wonder if I'd be the first to fly a latin banner in the Rangers crowd :)
Noel 90 3.32 :- I think if you played him against Rangers he would last under 20 minutes, you're best hope would be that through retaliation he took someone off with him, I wont deny he was once a great midfielder, but feel that his temper has grown as his pace declined.
As a matter of curiosity, what do others think of the psychological effect of winning/losing for either team tomorrow in respects to the league game. Would a result have no effect, a crushing effect or the opposite and fire up a team to make sure the get revenge next game?
I still think the weather tomorrow night is going to make for a poor footballing game, and it's more likely to be mistakes than skill that get a goal. 1- 1 90 minutes, Rangers to go through. (and looking forward to the link of Noel90 eating his pie :) )

Got my ticket for my first ever old firm game tomorrow. It's not that I'm a young whipper-snapper who's just started to shave I just haven't tried to get a ticket before. Canny wait!

The team pretty much chooses itself up to a point. With Sutton out Maloney will probably move up alongside Hartson from his left midfield slot. I think it's between McGeady, Walace and Thommo to fill the missing place in midfield.

If McGeady plays the way he can he would be a great asset but I feel he hasn't yet reached the consistency required at first team level; and he gives the ball away a lot.

Thommo has proved himself in old firm games in the past but he has also been sent off in old firm games in the past. I felt the midfield was slower during the Hearts game with Thommo in. As a lot of people have said he doesn't link well with Camara as he constantly drifts too far inside.

For Wallace read McGeady. A great prospect although he is a couple of years older but can waste possession. He was superb when he came on against the sisters of William (M'well). Like McGeady it would be good to see him run at the dodgy Rangers full backs but I'm not won over.

I suppose these kind of decisions are what WGS is paid for and I'm at a loss as to which one to play. Probably favour the younger guys over Thommo but have some great memories of his goals against Rangers when he keeps his head.

Just to finish on a happy note. My Dad's first old firm game was at Ibrox in the 60s when we drew 2-2 to win the league. His uncle bought him and his cousin tickets for the wrong end but they went in and stood among the minions and couldn't celebrate. One orc behind them got bottled for slagging off Willie Henderson but the pair of them got out alive and made a bee line for the Celtic fans celebrating outside. My ticket is for the Jock Stein stand upper tier (I'm the bloke who sings loudly all game in Block 439) so should be in better company.

    Mon the hoops!

We're at crossed purposes here, I think. It was mentioned here and on kerrydalestreet that we'd been linked with Pienaar. The Daily Ranger then took this info to concoct a piece of mischievous bilge concerning him being lined up as a possible replacement for Petrov. As I pointed out, and you appear to agree, he can in no way be seen as a replacement for a midfield powerhouse such as Stan or even Lenny. Pienaar is a flair player. And we already have a few of those.
I was dismissing the Daily Ranger's "exclusive", not you, old pal. ;-)

    Noel,
I enjoyed reading your thoughts at 10.06 this morning with regard to the vision of where we are going as a club.
I share your thoughts. I truly believe that the foundations are well in place at youth level and the fourth-coming share issue should put us back in shape financially.
“Padwans many our club has” as old Yoda would say. Can’t wait to see as many of them as possible in the first XI sometime soon. Gordon will know exactly when they are ready for the step up in physical terms and more importantly when they are mentally ready.

    Emjay,
Falkirk FC pride themselves these days as being a community club who play at the local community stadium. Well, we all know what community that is!
I am not and will never be fooled by the propaganda coming out of that club.
    Falkirk = Hun Toon.
Always has been and always will be in my lifetime.

    Bankiebhoy,
Once again, I agree entirely with your last post about Thommo.
You really are making me redundant on here the past few months, which probably isn’t a bad thing! You put the point over far better than I ever could hope to.

How can people be naive enough to be counting rangers out just now? It was only last season after we beat them in April time that everyone thought that the league was over, it only takes 3 losses (we still have 3 games against hearts and hibs)and a draw for them to come back. Lets remember that although this rangers team may not be the best, it still is a team that is in a good postion to qualify for the champions league and a team that is capable of beating a quality side like porto. While they have not been scoring they do have the second best defensive record in the premier league and Klos is back.

As for the game on wednesday, i think McGeady should definately play. He has a lot of hunger and his ability to do something a little bit unpredictable could win us the game. Its a difficult one to call on wednesday but i do have a good feeling about it, having said that i did have a bad feeling about motherwell and falkirk and was very, very wrong.

Go on the bhoys and hammer the final nail in the coffin of Alec McLeish.

So this Asain lhad... has he just been brought in or has he been at the club for a while?

If under 15 you really can't tell how he'll turn out - unless he's mixing it with the seniors at the moment... Freddy Adu style.

I still think the idea of Pienaar coming is ridiculus... maybe I'm being modest but he wouldn't want to come unless we were in the EPL.

Daily Rankers should be banned from all good newsagents... and some bad ones too!

Forgot to raise my other point...

Hearts - Rix - Why? - Step down for Hearts? - Should have went to Rangers!

The thing that is even better about Rix taking the reigns at Hearts is that they will need to be a buying club; surely he won't be allowed train with the kids!

It could indeed be a rough house but it will still be settled by goals scored. I think if we mirror Rangers then the game will become a lottery whereas if we stick to skill we should win.

The McGeady v Thompson debate. I hate to say it, but I would play Thompson over McGeady. I fear that Rangers would kick lumps out of both Nakamura and McGeady.

Thompson, and I'm not his biggest fan in the world, has also scored some wonderful goals against Rangers and maybe we should remember that as well as his sending offs, mad tackles etc.

Who knows what Thompson will turn up and if McGeady can play better to prove a point to the manager, then so can Thompson.

Aaah Paul, THAT game on May 21 1979...memories. Actually there have been landmark OF wins in history.

    1966 Celts 5-1 - beginning of the 9 in a row domination.

1975 Rangers 3-0 - signalled the end of the 9 in a row (broke my heart listening to it on the 'tranny' and still believed we could do it at 0-3).

1979 Celtic 4-2 - 10 men won the league and the currant buns took 8 years to recover.

    1988 - Rangers 5-1 - start of their NIAR.

2000 - Celtic 6-2 - O'Neill stamps his authority and it's the end of the big transfers for them.

2005 - Time for WGS and his team to make their mark.

And to tonight's CQN quiz question :

Who was Billy McNeill's first signing as manager of Celtic in 1978 and how much did he cost ?

    Answer later as per usual.

    Well said Frankiebhoy 5:38pm.

We tried muscle against Hearts, and it played right into their hands. They are a big strong team who go out and battle and fight for each other. Note the difference Maloney made when he came on as a sub, I'm sure we'd have won if he'd started.

And where was Alan Thompson during all this? He hit one great cross inside the first three minutes, and after that he disappeared, only to reappear at set-pieces and skelp the ball off the first defender. Expect the same if he plays tomorrow, although with it being TFOD, he has a good chance of getting himself sent off into the bargain.

I'd expect our fiends from Govan to play Rodriguez and Kyrgiakos tomorrow night, both of whom love a good wrestle (like Pressley). Playing Hartson and Sutton (if fit) would play into their hands. Big, strong centre-halves get away with murder against these two, and have always done in the SPL. It's much easier for the referee to use his interpretation in these types of challenge, often to our detriment.

If a smaller, speedier player skins one of these two and is then brought down, the referee has much less of a choice.

Leave Thompson out, play Maloney up front with Hartson and give McGeady a start with Pearson on the bench as cover.

And when our flair players are inevitably scythed down, they must keep their discipline, pick themselves up, dust themselves down and pass that mob off the park.

    Senor Pablo Diablo

    Hi all
Keevins on Clyde tonight was twice questioned by callers why Aiden's comments were distorted by his paper, twice he did not answer and then deflected the point by saying WGS backed down by allowing another young player Stephen McManus to speak to the press today.
Keythoughts for tomorrow discipline, speed, accuracy, endevour, committment fairness from the MIB if that is not an anathema, can only lead to a victory for the tic.
Celtic 3 McManus, Maloney Naka.Them 1 penalty [who cares]

Don't think Strachan will start tomorrow's game with a midfield including both McGeady and Nakamura. He knows that TFOD will try to muscle us out of our one touch passing game - that's their only way of getting a result. Therefore IMO Thompson will start with either McGeady or Pearson coming on in place of him in the second half.

Not overconfident for tomorrow. I expect the game to be much tighter than some other bloggers are predicting, but should end up with a narrow win for the Tic. However, assuming both Sutton and Magic are back for the league game then expect the winning margin to be much greater.

    Jimtim 6.27,
I agree with you completely. Oh for a wee Bertie especially to protect the likes of Nakamura and MacGeady. I think too that the League game is the more important game by a long way, so we should think seriously before playing them against the likes of Rae until it is absolutely necessary.

If it is down to football, we would walk it. It won't be, of course. They need to make it a battle.

As one of those cautioning against us getting carried away last season after the result at Ibrox, I feel the same now (well, I always do playing them: a consequence of too many painful experiences over too many years).

Still, nothing that a 5-0 wouldn't make better, just like the 5-1 that started the Stein machine. I can still remember the sheer joy of that, especially as all the goals (including theirs) were scored in the fog at the Celtic end, where I was for once.

God, I must be getting old.

Something a few people are forgetting, we have a decent keeper for a change.

I don't expect much football to be played, the usual blood and snotters for the first 20mins.

If we score first it could settle us down and allow us to start playing.

Without Sutton we really need BBJ to be on form. He will get penalised constantly but he must keep the head down and use his strength to help break thru the ranjurs defence.

    3-1 Hartson 2, Petrov

I emailed the scottish daily mirror earlier today regarding a falkirk fan's article on our singing on sunday.

to check what i wrote to the paper see my post(12.57) on Paul's last article.

    here's the reply.

Thanks for your email in response to Tuesday's Row Z piece.

As a general observation, the philosophy behind this column is that we give the contributor carte blanche to state their point of view and air their grievances - to "go off on one", if you like. It is not required to be balanced, and it is certainly not intended to reflect the views of the Daily Mirror.

We have in the past published Row Z pieces from Celtic fans airing views similar to your own. In particular we ran a piece accusing Scottish football fans, and the the media, of anti-Irish sentiment in their treatment of the Aiden McGeady/Ireland issue.
As it happens we have a Celtic supporter booked in to the Row Z slot next Tuesday - although I do not yet know what the precise topic will be.

With your consent I could forward your comments and your email address to John White and, assuming he is of the same mind, you can pursue the debate.

    Regards

    Michael Martin
    Chief Sub-editor, sport
    Scottish Daily Mirror

Well Mr Martin we'll just blame the falkirk fan for his comments then!!

I am still of the opinion a newspaper has a responsibility of deciding what goes in its paper and that particular article only backed up what we all know.

    Rory is alive and well!!

i agree with senor pablo diablo.leave bbj upfront to combat their central defence and let our young guns mcgeady& maloney run at and around the big slow rangers defenders.
as long as none of our boys are seriously injured they will be fouled all night allowing us to keep possession from free kicks as well as having some chances for naka, shaun and stan.
as a bonus we may even see kyriagkos(sp)finally get his just desserts of being given first shot at the showers for his persistent fouling.(although i suppose that i`m wishing for too much there)

everything points to a win for us but unfortunately i`m like a few others here and start to worry when things seem to go too well for us in the build up to these games.

We must keep the big picture in view, i.e. that the team is playing some wonderful stuff and has progressed far faster than any of us would have dared hope a few months ago.

Of course tomorrow night is important and I'll be pretty uptight tuning in from my wee house in Cambridgeshire but the future is definitely ours whether we win or lose tomorrow. The 5-1 defeat at Ibrox in MON's second game didn't stop us winning the league by a mile that season and the same will be true tomorrow. Remamber when we couldn't beat McLeish's teams? This didn't make him a better manager than MON.

The short term and medium term planning at Parkhead at the moment seems to be of the highest quality. The pool of players has moved on to the extent that we have injuries to three strikers and yet can more than cope with it due to the qulity of players. Same is true of midfield and defence where we have quality players unable to get a game because of the standard of the incumbents.

So, whatever happens tomorrow keep smiling and remind any huns you know that they're.............

What are the chances, anybody, of Thompson for the first 60 minutes, then Naka coming on when they are dead on their feet for the final half hour?

Celtic have been scoring from all over the park, so although it's not ideal to have 3 quality strikers out, we can go into this game with confidence of getting the goals that's needed.

As usual in this fixture, a big factor will be the "officials" - the best that money can buy.
Not, as suggested by our resident tad bare (5:54), the weather (ha, ha, ha!).

Hands up all those who think we are winding it up for the Gers tomorrow?

EMJAY: Your persistance in the cause is to be admired.

    NOEL@

I was really young at heart when i joined this blog.

    I have definately aged since.

That is not my immediate problem though.

What about PAUL67....he has really aged .

Trying to keep you guys on the straight and narrow.

    Now then your submission 11am.
i wuould reckon the oldest blogger isPaul67
    followed by AAFGovan,
    Weeron can't be far away,
    Supercelt is in there somewhere,
Emjay talks too much sense to not be in there,
    JonG middle off the road{good guess}
    NOEL older than he looks,
Blantyre Kev must come into the reckoning,
St Anthony is young at heart so about right,
Johnbhoy, and Kians dad get too many quizzes right so they must be in about here,
Kojo is lurking somewhere about now,
And then there was BIG JOE,
As i remember we were all a bit younger before he joined.Sighhhhhh!
No doubt about one thing though.I made what i thought was a sensibile post earlier today.

    I stand by it.

    Feet on the ground.

Although the nearer i get to the game my feet seem to be adopting ideas of there own.

    First it was a draw.

    Then lets get intae them.

On reflection we must all keep our sanity and lets not let the bogeyman run away with fancy ideas.

So tomorrow taking all things into consideration,
    Celtic 5 Rangers 2

    You know it makes sense!

    Hail Hail.

    Answer to tonight's quiz........

Good guesses but MacLeod, Stark, Melrose, Gibson, and McClair are incorrect.

Johnbhoy is correct with Jimmy Lumsden, signed for the princely sum of 10,000 from Clydebank. Played only 1 game against Clyde in the anglo-scots cup and became reserve coach.

Paul - the game we remember was on 4 January 1975. My mate still hasn't forgiven Kenny D for missing two sitters at 0-1 !

With regard to the piece in the Scottish Daily Mirror its hardly surprising. After ditching the record years ago i started buying the Mirror as it was left wing (would never buy the sun-sorry smudger!)

What i have noticed is the Scottish hacks are still full of venom when discussing any thing Celtic. Some of the articles by Gordon Smith, Michael Baille, and the pompus Ewing Graham are so one sided their laughable. The Sunday Mirror isn't any better with Joe McHugh and Ray Hepburn. Balanced reporting? more like lazy journalism at its worse. Boycott the rags!!!

By the way does anyone know the difference between "Head Coach" and "Manager"?
Placed a bet on the new herts manager being Graham Rix but the bookies won't pay out saying that "Head Coach" is not a manager.

    Adsvice anyone?

Concerning your thoughts on the imminent demise of MIM / TFOD I think that you underestimate the powers of recovery of the football team if it can be extricated from the wreckage of the holding company.

Any value investor in the mould of a "Blue" version of DD would see the potential and make an offer to HBOS to take the team of their hands.

    Value = Unknown
    Debt = £20mill+
    Cost = DM's ego

It would all come down as to how much would have to be put into MIM to unravel the loans and the balance sheet valuations. However the need for the money could lead to some creative solutions to keep both the club and the company afloat.

Given some of DM's recent pronouncements, from memory zero debt within 12 months and the possiblity of some sort of "Trust" involvement, a split of the club could be on the cards.

    1) Stadium Company (SC), could be a target of the much speculated TH move on the club from a property perspective.
    2) Football club (RFC) to be run by a trust, floated off with MP, zero debt, a £10mill dowry and a substantial overdraft facillity.

SC makes its money as follows:
    1) £5mill rent for the league games
    2) Cut of any cup / Euro gate money
    3) Stadium income / Hospitality
    4) Office rentals / incl £1mill pa from the club.
    5) Property development on the site.

    Total = £12-15mill pa?

An income stream like this, with MP as security from the football club, would support a mortgage of £60-80mill as long as the new investors put up £20mill.

Consequently Paul please don't count your chickens before they have hatched. You underestimate at your peril the ability of the financial establishment to launch a lifeboat to save both the club and the holding company. The one loser in all of this will be DM but a lot of people will consider that a small price to pay for the survival of "Scotland's second biggest institution" and a few thousand jobs.

They might be fourth but they are not Third Lanark.

One thing as you note you can be certain off.

The establishment won't let Rangers drown!

If anyone thinks we might just be presiding over the financial demise off Rangers.Think again!

Under no circumstances will they be allowed to sink in their own juices!

Football teams throughout Britain have over the years fought and struggled to stay afloat.

    Murrayfield!

That is a prime example of how the financial hierarchy in Scotland works.

An Amateur sport which out of the blue can deliver a 5 star stadium.

If MIH has debts of 250/300M then I dont think the bank will call the debt in........it would put the bank in a bad light......people would be saying.......why did you's let then run up that kind of debt.

So lets hope they keep limping along for a good few years yet.

    Celtic 3.0 rangers......I'm sticking a £5 on that score.....never had bet for a few years.......fingers crossed

Rangers players can still tackle Maloney, Nakamura, McGeady or whoever whether Thommo is on the pitch or not.

It's football, I know what people mean but Thommo can't step in and say if you want to tackle him you have to go through me.

Anyway Thommo's not a great tackler, wet pitch, not match fit, he'd be on a yellow card in no time.

Murrayfield was easy to deliver because each home game of the Six Nations brings in around £4M that's £12M a year minimum.

It's a totally different ball game(pun absolutely intended) from the possibility of Rangers being aided by the establishment.

I've posted my thoughts on their bankers, the sponsors of the SPL, and why they can still operate before but I don't see them being bailed out completely.

    My dear friend, JohnG,

Sir Paul and I, and myriad of others, have never wanted the complete and utter demise of our Bitter Rivals.

    To set the matter straight in the minds of any doubters to that fact;
Sir Paul et al, propose that Celtic will be very well served by a welcome.....

FINANCIAL KNEECAPPING Of the GREAT ANTAGONIST!

Complete Dissolution of the Ray empire was never our purported intent.

To cut our Mortal Enemies off at the Pass, would serve our purpose rather well.

A Financially Crippled G.A. was the most that we could hope for.

And a strong possibility of that, can take place.

As any of the financially astute among us know very well.......

Bankruptcy in and of its self, does not always mean the Dissolution of a Corp.

Many a financial disaster has been eventually turned around back to prosperity........

But that does always take Time!!

Meanwhile.... Celtic will be busily .......

    BRINGING IN THE SHEAVES!

    NO.........

Sir Paul will be very happy with....

A FINANCIALLY WOUNDED CREATURE, dwelling at EDMINSTON(?) DRIVE!

    Hail! Hail!

    Kojo.

Paul67 aka "The king of wishful thinking"

Keep it real, you/we have nothing to gain by generating a frenzy about the imminent demise of the TFOD if it isn't going to happen.

No matter the financial ructions that could take place in MIM the football team will be allowed to revive itself on the back of a value investor and a ludge whipround.

The other day I stated that I didn't think BoS would ever pull the plug on Rangers' finances as they're the biggest customer in the league they sponsor.

I also said this might be behind the (public at least) cooling of Rangers interest in joining a restructured Premiership.

I think it's interesting that the current BoS SPL sponsorship ends at the same time as the current SKY EPL deal.

    Or maybe it isn't.
