Unveiling of Brother Walfrid Statue on Saturday

Just a reminder that this Saturday, 5th November at 2pm will be a very special moment in the history of our club, when the Brother Walfrid Statue is unveiled. I would encourage anyone who can get to Celtic Park for this unique event to do so.

Below is an excerpt from the Brother Walfrid Memorial Committee press release.

I look forward to seeing you then.

Brother Walfrid Memorial Committee press release

A statue of Brother Walfrid, created by sculptor Kate Robinson and solely financed by Celtic supporters, will be unveiled outside the glass fronted entrance to Celtic Park on Saturday 5th November at 2pm. To this end, for the past three years money raising ventures have been taking place amongst Celtic supporters and for eighteen months the planning committee has been organising the construction and erection of the statue as well as the unveiling ceremony itself.

This venture has resulted from the wishes of many supporters to honour the man, who along with his compatriots in 1887/88, gave birth to the institution that has become a community symbol. Tens of thousands of pounds have been raised over the past three years by fans, including by Celtic supporters associations in North America, Ireland, England and Scotland.

Andrew Kerins, the Catholic Marist Brother Walfrid from County Sligo Ireland, is the critical figure in the history of the Club. The legacy of Walfrid and his fellow founders of Celtic has meant that Irish immigrants and their offspring, Scotland’s largest immigrant community, as well as many others from a variety of backgrounds and identities, have shared in this cultural institution, been recipients of Celtic inspired charity and enjoyed and celebrated the distinctiveness and success that Celtic has brought to their lives.

Joining several thousand Celtic supporters at the ceremony will be past and present Celtic players, officials and custodians, as well as Church, political, sporting and community representatives from all over Scotland and beyond, reflecting the essential nature, distinctiveness as well as openness and symbolism of the Club. The statue will be unveiled by several well known figures including Celtic Chairman Brian Quinn, who was taught by Marist Brothers in Glasgow and whose family roots are in Sligo, former Celtic player Sligo born Sean Fallon, as well as a grand niece and grand nephew of Brother Walfrid and two refugees from the contemporary refugee community in Glasgow. A number of children will also be involved in the unveiling of the statue.

The ceremony will be distinguished by music composed for the event by Scotland’s foremost composer, James MacMillan. Entitled ‘Walfrid, on His Arrival at the Gates of Paradise’, it will be performed by the musicians of the ‘Coatbridge St Patrick’s Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann’, an Irish cultural body with numerous branches amongst the Irish diaspora in Scotland and other countries. The ceremony begins at 2pm on Saturday November 5th. Celtic and the Brother Walfrid Committee have invited all Celtic supporters to attend this momentous day.

I am so glad that as a Catholic and a Celtic fan we now have an opportunity to make the 5th of November memorable for something the polar opposite of what this day stands for at present.

Well done Eddie and the Brother Walfrid Committee.

    Paul,
every time I read a post that I want to comment on, rangers go and screw up again, or hertz fire someo, and the discussion blasts off on another direction....:)

So, Klos. Are you saying he has appearances built into his deal?

I understood that they wanted him to ask for a transfer, so they could get a fee. Wasn't aware that they couldn't afford to pay/play him. Can you confirm/elaborate?

    Thanks.

Glad to see the club officially endorsing an event such as this. Particularly with the club and other bodies efforts to stamp out bigotry in Scottish football, it is heartening to show that there is no shame in embracing your history, especially one in which brought about the worlds greatest football club. No doubt our 'friends' in the media will have a field day with it, but let them. If you know

A fantastic opportunity to celebrate the origins of the greatest club in the world.

On the subject of our charitable origins can I raise the point made by No2Pacey last night. One of our dear friends, St Pauli FC in Germany, is in serious financial trouble. As someone who went to the St Pauli pre-season game in Germany quite a few years ago I can say that the club and the supporters could not have been more welcoming and they really follow the Celtic ethos.

The bond between the two clubs is still as strong as ever. St Pauli fans unveiled a huge banner at a home match to congratulate Celtic when we won the title in 2004.

Surely it is not asking too much for the club to organise a trip over to Hamburg on a Champions League night next year and get St. Pauli over here for a pre-season game at Celtic Park?

I'd much rather attend these two games than travel to Newcastle to fill a millionaire footballer's pockets or watch us play Leeds Utd in a pre-season game at Celtic Park.

Quinn has a neck of solid brass. Yet again it takes the fans to honour those worth honouring. The club should have commisioned a statue of Jock Stein many a year ago, and jinky should have one having been voted our greatest ever player, but as usual, the club are too tight to bother. No doubt when the wee mans time is up there will be a clamour for a memorial, but something should be done now.

Where exactly is the statue going to be located? If the club plan to upgrade the environs up to the fron of the stadium then no doubt they'll need to move it in the next couple of years.

Agree on a statue of Jock Stein - does anyone know how much the supporters raised for the Brother Walfrid one?

It this thread that creeps thru here - like Graham Speirs is only a good journalist when he rubbishes Rangers - the minute he says anything good about them he's an idiot - what a load of rubbish. It’s the same thing with the Red Tops - if we like what they report - e.g. Pete Doherty is clueless - then that’s great - but if we don’t like it e.g. Neil Lennon's abrasive - then we're up in arms again. As the old saying goes you cant have it both ways

I was at Celtic Park yesterday to pick up old firm tickets and the statue was being delivered, got a picture on my phone (so not the best quality), but you can access it at http://img290.imageshack.us/img290/3237/011120058kg.jpg

on the old firm tickets note, any reason there are so many available for the cup game next week? seem's shocking to me that we are in the second day of GENERAL SALE and still have ton's of seats unsold!

    The taste of CQN.

Don’t be overly analytical about it and miss the combined effect of its elements, to dissect is to destroy and you might fail to notice elements that don’t fall neatly into familiar categories like honeysuckle, jasmine, lychee, apricot, pineapple, pear, apple, lemon, grapefruit, fig, bell pepper, asparagus, green olive, cut green grass, dried herbs, dust (bigjoe), anise, clove, nuts, honey, butter, vanilla, smoke, wood, cherry, strawberry, blackberry, berry jam, cassis, fruit candy, bell pepper, asparagus, green bean, black olive, mint, roses, eucalyptus, tobacco, mushroom, earth, anise, black pepper, old socks, clove, butter, soy, ear wax, molasses, chocolate, cedar, vanilla,
smoke, and pine. We don’t need to fit faces, sunsets, or bird calls into set categories to perceive, enjoy, and appreciate them, and it seems constrictive to do so. Why should the enjoyment and appreciation of CQN be any different? Surely some of the aromas and flavours of CQN fall between the categorical cracks?

On a separate theme entirely what are the maximum penalties for plagiarism?

And I might get a kicking.

But speaking as an tim-but-now-atheist, I can't be bothered with statues being blessed. How does this make Celtic fans feel who are not R.C.s ?

Celtic are of course right to celebrate their heritage, but personally, anyone in the crowd whos jewish, muslim, protestant ( or of course atheist ) might feel a little excluded.

I'm proud of celtic's Irish community roots, but I think at an official level the club should celebrate our Irish / Scots roots and tradition of welcoming anyone along to support us ( the edition of the Celtic View which featured immigrants to Glasgow coming along to support Celtic was fantastic ) rather than indulging Mario Conti. He can come along, but spare us the hocus pocus.

A comment and a question, comment first, I've noticed a few folk are expecting negative reports on the ceremony on Saturday, I would suggest treating such folk with contempt, to decry someone due to their roots is the first step in creating an untermench. Now for the question and it's probably something everyone f you know without thinking, why the connection between Celtic and St Pauli?

The statue is of a Catholic Marist brother. It is only right surely that he should be honoured in a fitting way. Walfrid's life was not crystalised in Celtic, rather it was dedicated to Catholicism and its teachings and ethos.

As a bi-product Celtic were formed and for that we, Celtic supporters, (Pagan, Christian, Muslim, Jew etc) are eternally grateful.

To honour the man simply for the football club and not show the dignity and respect to what Andrew Kerins was would be simply wrong.

I do not feel it is exclusive of others. Tolerance is imperative in a multi-cultural secular society. In fact perhaps terms such as 'hocus pocus' are more unpalatable than the dignity of a religious blessing?

    Hocus Pocus??????????

You use such an inflammatory phrase yet you ask for tolerance of others?

Explain that use of language to me then as that seems rather intolerant of my personal religion (to which I do not take to kindly being insulted) and that of the man we will be celebrating on the day.

Blantyrekev, as a rough rule of thumb if you steal from one source then that's plagiarism but if you steal from two then that's research.

Your post must have come from more than one source (although you did miss Jilly Goolden's famous "buckets of ugli fruit" comment) so no penalties.

P.S. What's all this Rioja nonsense from other posters? What's wrong with good old Wolf Blass?

Ok, sorry if 'hocus pocus' offends some. It's my view of all religions of all denominations ( if you watch the current Guinness advert about evolution, then that's a quick summary of why.)

But if I go along to the unveiling of a statue for the football club I love, I have to - albeit passively- stand and be blessed. Everyone around me bowing their heads. Mumbled 'Amens'. I've been through all that in life and I've rejected it.

Supporting Celtic helps me celebrate my Irish roots ( and to an extent my political beliefs ), yet I'd feel slightly annoyed and distanced from the club if I have to be blessed.

The question is not whether I'm intolerant, it's why bother ? It's good to celebrate the guy who founded Celtic in 1887, but it's indulgent to expect all Celtic fans to c
