I am so glad that as a Catholic and a Celtic fan we now have an opportunity to make the 5th of November memorable for something the polar opposite of what this day stands for at present.
Well done Eddie and the Brother Walfrid Committee.

Paul,
every time I read a post that I want to comment on, rangers go and screw up again, or hertz fire someo, and the discussion blasts off on another direction....:)
So, Klos. Are you saying he has appearances built into his deal?
I understood that they wanted him to ask for a transfer, so they could get a fee. Wasn't aware that they couldn't afford to pay/play him. Can you confirm/elaborate?
Thanks.

If I was going thats what I would do....-
Would that be the 1st CQN webcast ?

Glad to see the club officially endorsing an event such as this. Particularly with the club and other bodies efforts to stamp out bigotry in Scottish football, it is heartening to show that there is no shame in embracing your history, especially one in which brought about the worlds greatest football club. No doubt our 'friends' in the media will have a field day with it, but let them. If you know
the history...

Martybhoy, I never celebrate the 5th November, and bore anyone within earshot who discusses doing so.
Weeron, that’s right.
Parkheadcomesalford, agree to differ on this one. If they were in danger of doing well in Europe I would feel different.
Noel, the first CQN (audio) webcast will be tomorrow, assuming things go well – and what a big news day tomorrow will be here on Celtic Quick News…..
-
Rarely get the chance to post these days but always keep up to date with the discussions, well done Paul and everyone.
Saturday seems good opportunity to take AJ67, (aged 2and three quarters) for first visit to Celtic Park.
Anyone close to event organisers able to confirm that event is suitable for AJ's age group?
-
Paul-
methinks you have something really big up your sleeve...
Any chance of an approximate time-

imagine the kudos that would come with the first POST after the FIRST webcast....

Paul, ever thought of doing a Podcast?
would be great to download the webcast to my iPod for the train to work.
anyone else second this?

Agree wholeheartedly Michael_67.Must be the only country in the world where celebration and recognition of your roots is frowned upon.must admit I am a bit surprised but very pleased at the stance taken.
-
Noel, it will be late morning /early afternoon.
Ginger Prince, the podcast will come, I have been trying this out for a wee while now privately. Content is the key, there is no point just podcasting for the sake of it (as many seem to). I’ll fire something off soon and see what reaction it gets.

A fantastic opportunity to celebrate the origins of the greatest club in the world.
On the subject of our charitable origins can I raise the point made by No2Pacey last night. One of our dear friends, St Pauli FC in Germany, is in serious financial trouble. As someone who went to the St Pauli pre-season game in Germany quite a few years ago I can say that the club and the supporters could not have been more welcoming and they really follow the Celtic ethos.
The bond between the two clubs is still as strong as ever. St Pauli fans unveiled a huge banner at a home match to congratulate Celtic when we won the title in 2004.
Surely it is not asking too much for the club to organise a trip over to Hamburg on a Champions League night next year and get St. Pauli over here for a pre-season game at Celtic Park?
I'd much rather attend these two games than travel to Newcastle to fill a millionaire footballer's pockets or watch us play Leeds Utd in a pre-season game at Celtic Park.
-
-
I will be there on Saturday with the digi camera - if I can workout how to upload a filmclip of the unveiling I'll do it.
Oh aye - what are Uilleann Pipes?

They connect the cistern to the bowl.

Noel 90
Your perception of Pete Doherty as a junky who injects illegal substances - where does that come from I wonder - would it be the very same Tabloids we ridicule when they print football stuff we don’t like? So the anti Celtic stuff is made up but everything else is True?
Give the guy a break - he could be a Celtic fan for all you know.
-
Thanx for that Noel, i have just emailed that picture to everyone i know :)
-
Quinn has a neck of solid brass. Yet again it takes the fans to honour those worth honouring. The club should have commisioned a statue of Jock Stein many a year ago, and jinky should have one having been voted our greatest ever player, but as usual, the club are too tight to bother. No doubt when the wee mans time is up there will be a clamour for a memorial, but something should be done now.
-
Pete Doherty is a QPR fan.
And an erse.
-
Were QPR the only football team Guiness have sponsored?
Where exactly is the statue going to be located? If the club plan to upgrade the environs up to the fron of the stadium then no doubt they'll need to move it in the next couple of years.
Agree on a statue of Jock Stein - does anyone know how much the supporters raised for the Brother Walfrid one?
-
All right bhoys:
I like others can't make it on Saturday, and would also welcome a video clip on here.
I can see tomorrow being a big news day,on a few fronts.
Hope i'm right!
NOEL: I think i am over my rant from last night, and having said that i have to disagree.Rangers were not only mince last night they were full blown STOVIES.

Can I just state, for the record, that Doherty is as correctly stated by newtaggsybhoy a complete and utter erse.
I know a few guys that have been in his company both in the Libertines and in Babyshambles and they all tell me that he is an erse.
Anyway, on to the important stuff.
Well done to Eddie and the guys for the Brother Walfrid statue. I still find it amazing that this hasn't happened before.
Does anybody know roughly where it's going to be yet. Personally I would put it slap bang in front of the doors by that lovely flower bed.
Also, Baldy, your spelling as atrocious and can you please refer to it as it was and always will be referred to as - Lumleys - Enough of this modernity rubbish.

Cubist Frank, I am not going near Rangers tomorrow, all Celtic news.
What do you mean only two senses? Tomorrow you will be able to see Celtic, Quick News, you will be able to hear it, and you will be able to lick the screen – and taste Celtic Quick News.
I thought everybody done this anyway.
-
If it was Belgium and Galloway got the winner, the opponents were probably Germinal Ekeren.
Great volley into the top right corner from the left hand side of the six-yard box by Galloway if I remember back into my early/just-pre-teens
-
cheers evil Rhum a little head damage means I need some threads to jolt my memory. It was Ekeren and I remember standing right behind the goal as Galloway blasted in the winner
I also threw my scarf that had been with me since childhood over the fence in a supposed swap with a guy on the other side- when he caught it he just legged it !!

Whether Pete Doherty is a good guy or not is hardly the point. It this thread that creeps thru here - like Graham Speirs is only a good journalist when he rubbishes Rangers - the minute he says anything good about them he's an idiot - what a load of rubbish. It’s the same thing with the Red Tops - if we like what they report - e.g. Pete Doherty is clueless - then that’s great - but if we don’t like it e.g. Neil Lennon's abrasive - then we're up in arms again. As the old saying goes you cant have it both ways

If the statue of Brother Walfrid is going to be sighted outside the main entrance can anyone spell out security arrangements, outside of business hours.

Whitedoghunch, thanks. I'll give that a go on Saturday.
As for the free range poached egg, I've just had that very thing on top of a piece of Stornoway black pudding - delicious
CQN to me tastes like lager - that's what I'm usually drinking when I read it.
-
Don't worry JonG - the club have arranged to project a virtual Terry Cassidy (a'la Princess Leia) into the car park to ward off any evil-doers.
-
i'm also a wee bit worried the statue will get the "donald dewar" treatment!
i would hope there is surveilance around celtic park anyway but it might not stop certain "yoofs" getting to it.

ubject: Evening Times- Land Mark Ruling
>
> Glasgow Evening Times (AP) - A seven-year-old boy was at the centre of
> a
Glasgow courtroom drama last week when he challenged a court ruling over
who should have custody of him. The boy has a history of beingbeaten by
> his parents and the judge initially awarded custody to
his aunt, in keeping with child custody law and regulations requiring that
family unity be maintained to the degree possible.
>
> The boy surprised the court when he proclaimed that his aunt beat him
more than his parents and he adamantly refused to live with her.
> When the judge then suggested that he live with his grandparents, the
boy cried out that they also beat him.
>
> After considering the remainder of the immediate family and learning
that domestic violence was apparently a way of life among
> them, the judge took the unprecedented step of allowing the boy to
propose who should have custody of him.
>
> After two recesses to check legal references and confer with child
welfare officials, the judge granted temporary custody to Glasgow Rangers
Football Club whom the boy firmly believes are incapable of beating anyone.

The taste of CQN.
Don’t be overly analytical about it and miss the combined effect of its elements, to dissect is to destroy and you might fail to notice elements that don’t fall neatly into familiar categories like honeysuckle, jasmine, lychee, apricot, pineapple, pear, apple, lemon, grapefruit, fig, bell pepper, asparagus, green olive, cut green grass, dried herbs, dust (bigjoe), anise, clove, nuts, honey, butter, vanilla, smoke, wood, cherry, strawberry, blackberry, berry jam, cassis, fruit candy, bell pepper, asparagus, green bean, black olive, mint, roses, eucalyptus, tobacco, mushroom, earth, anise, black pepper, old socks, clove, butter, soy, ear wax, molasses, chocolate, cedar, vanilla,
smoke, and pine. We don’t need to fit faces, sunsets, or bird calls into set categories to perceive, enjoy, and appreciate them, and it seems constrictive to do so. Why should the enjoyment and appreciation of CQN be any different? Surely some of the aromas and flavours of CQN fall between the categorical cracks?
On a separate theme entirely what are the maximum penalties for plagiarism?

And I might get a kicking.
But speaking as an tim-but-now-atheist, I can't be bothered with statues being blessed. How does this make Celtic fans feel who are not R.C.s ?
Celtic are of course right to celebrate their heritage, but personally, anyone in the crowd whos jewish, muslim, protestant ( or of course atheist ) might feel a little excluded.
I'm proud of celtic's Irish community roots, but I think at an official level the club should celebrate our Irish / Scots roots and tradition of welcoming anyone along to support us ( the edition of the Celtic View which featured immigrants to Glasgow coming along to support Celtic was fantastic ) rather than indulging Mario Conti. He can come along, but spare us the hocus pocus.

Hi Paul,
A comment and a question, comment first, I've noticed a few folk are expecting negative reports on the ceremony on Saturday, I would suggest treating such folk with contempt, to decry someone due to their roots is the first step in creating an untermench. Now for the question and it's probably something everyone f you know without thinking, why the connection between Celtic and St Pauli?
Frankiebhoy2.16 :- LMAO

6countiesfry
The statue is of a Catholic Marist brother. It is only right surely that he should be honoured in a fitting way. Walfrid's life was not crystalised in Celtic, rather it was dedicated to Catholicism and its teachings and ethos.
As a bi-product Celtic were formed and for that we, Celtic supporters, (Pagan, Christian, Muslim, Jew etc) are eternally grateful.
To honour the man simply for the football club and not show the dignity and respect to what Andrew Kerins was would be simply wrong.
I do not feel it is exclusive of others. Tolerance is imperative in a multi-cultural secular society. In fact perhaps terms such as 'hocus pocus' are more unpalatable than the dignity of a religious blessing?
-
otto,
close but no cigar this time......
you missed something out.

6 Counties?
Hocus Pocus??????????
You use such an inflammatory phrase yet you ask for tolerance of others?
Explain that use of language to me then as that seems rather intolerant of my personal religion (to which I do not take to kindly being insulted) and that of the man we will be celebrating on the day.
-
Blantyrekev, as a rough rule of thumb if you steal from one source then that's plagiarism but if you steal from two then that's research.
Your post must have come from more than one source (although you did miss Jilly Goolden's famous "buckets of ugli fruit" comment) so no penalties.
P.S. What's all this Rioja nonsense from other posters? What's wrong with good old Wolf Blass?

-
-
Martybhoy,
That is very scary.
Such an argument leads to armed struggle and the death of innocents.
I would suggest passing that on to the authorities but it was probably an advocate that wrote it.
-
Tommy Docherty??
-
Ok, sorry if 'hocus pocus' offends some. It's my view of all religions of all denominations ( if you watch the current Guinness advert about evolution, then that's a quick summary of why.)
But if I go along to the unveiling of a statue for the football club I love, I have to - albeit passively- stand and be blessed. Everyone around me bowing their heads. Mumbled 'Amens'. I've been through all that in life and I've rejected it.
Supporting Celtic helps me celebrate my Irish roots ( and to an extent my political beliefs ), yet I'd feel slightly annoyed and distanced from the club if I have to be blessed.
The question is not whether I'm intolerant, it's why bother ? It's good to celebrate the guy who founded Celtic in 1887, but it's indulgent to expect all Celtic fans to celebrate his beliefs.
-
Edward
St Pauli are the team of the immigrant population in Hamburg and their fans regularly speak out and demonstrate against fascism and racism in German society so there is a definite kindred spirit there.
I think the bond between the two teams was really forged during Rangers 9 in a row years because St Pauli have always lived in the shadow of SV Hamburg. I also seem to remember that when we stopped the 10, St Pauli also got promoted to the Bundesliga (although I may be wrong on that one). However, whenever we play on mainland Europe, especially Germany, there are always a fair number of the St Pauli Bhoys following us.
Plus having been to see Celtic play St Pauli in Hamburg their fans sure know how to drink! I, for one, am proud of the link and hope that Celtic do all they can to help our German brothers in their hour of need.
-
you can give me a fiver any time you like but you're wrong. That "tea-time take on the world of football" is nothing to do with me.
As for that diatribe on Hollow Hollow - I thought us Celtic fans were supposed to be the paranoid ones?
My how times have changed when they get some bad news and press. Imagine what we'd get if the journos ever did print a cracked Orc badge? They'd be hi-jacking the tv companies and trying a coup d'etat.. Imagine a hundred or so orcs trying to break into the Beeb studios? It'd be like the two towers (Lord of the rings) Can you imagine the bbc staff being led by jackie bird and dougie donnelly fighting off the orcs?
Also can i just say isn't the comedy pretend scary stuff supposed to be done on halloween and not a few days later?? When did latent pretend scary stuff become so abnormally odd?
anyway, time to stop being wierd.
Tolerance is a two way thing that's all i have to say. oh and respect is also two-ways. Hocus pocus? pah!

My dear friend,6countiesfry,
In the big scheme of things, I reckon that from time to time, it will be inevitable, that this Sainted Refuge of all things Celtic, should be visited by an Atheist.
Congratulations, my friend , your lack of faith in the Presence and Existence of a Creator is very commendable.........and if I may add.......Brave!
You are therefore a man to reckon with........ A profound and deep thinker of the First Water.
The next time a Baby is Born into your family, I pity you.......
I know, for me, when my lovely and now .....BEAUTIFUL and TALENTED and SUCCESSFUL CHILD.......was wheeled into my presence , by a beaming Nurse......... My heart rejoiced at the MIRACLE OF BIRTH!
My dear wife and I had been presented with a BRAND NEW LIFE....
Pause and think, for a moment........
LIFE.......LIFE......!!
To return to my assessment of your impaired faculty.......
You, my friend, can never ever experience the exultation that my dear wife and I did experience, on the Entrance to the World of a BRAND NEW SOUL.........
From your point of view......
It was just a Humdrum result of a Pleasurable Mutual Moment enjoyed by My dear Wife and I.
Life my friend is a Miracle........
No one Knows how it all came about...
I leave you with this lasting Thought........
"If There was no God.......Then Man would Invent One!"
All over the World since the beginning of Recorded History....
Man has ALWAYS KNOWN that there was something Greater than He...... WHO was pulling the STRINGS of NATURAL LAWS??
Gravity, Night and Day, The Seasons??
Bees? Ants? Fleas? they all have a Purpose.
I salute you.
Your are indeed a very brave man!
I should offer that, the smart thing to do would be to HEDGE YOUR BETS!

Have been away most of the day and come back to a bizzare set of posts on CQN.
Without wishing to indulge in the kind of banter that ruins sites, I think it would be a very bad day when Celtic or the Catholic community cannot openly express themselves without being vilified.
But hey, lets all celebrate Guy Fawkes night.

Maybe they should change the words of the song to 'We're up to our knees in anti-libertarian blood'.

My dear friend ARDOCH,
I am sorry that you find my comments distasteful.
But if a gentleman comes on to this site, and Categorically states that because He is of the Atheistic Persuasion, and that He is OFFENDED>.............. Because the MAJORITY of Celtic Fans are Paying HOMAGE to a great and WORTHY Man.......

Paul et al,
First time poster to your excellent site.
RE the Celtic/St. Pauli connection, it goes further back than that mentioned by martinobhoy.
First contact was made by St. Pauli fans to those who run Not the View when this great publication slagged off the throwing of bananas and monkey chanting when Mark Walters made his debut against us.
A couple of the St. Pauli fans who ran the Millentor Roar, the St. Pauli fanzine, got in touch and came over to see the Celts because the stance taken by the fanzine fitted with the St. Pauli anti-racism (gegen rechts) stance.
Since then it has kept increasing to the extent that when we played in both Stuttgart and Munich, there were about 400 St. Pauli fans supporting the Hoops.

I believe the statue itself will be blessed, not the attendees and I think that's fair enough given who he was.
For the avoidance of doubt I respect your right to reject religion and will endeavour to avoid the subject entirely on this football site.
Hail CQN, God among blogs.

In respect of Paul67s wishes, I'll refrain from chat about the rights and wrongs of 'blessings'.
So - a different topic.
Celtic and Irish bars - there's a world wide ready made market. Could celtic not team up with Setanta and sell huge amounts of jerseys et al through Irish bars around the globe ?
Taking into account our aforementioned history could we not exploit these places a bit better ?
I can see DD twirling his 'tache and rubbing his hands with glee at the prospect...

Tolerance? Respect?
I agree that one shouldn't be imposing one's views and beliefs, be they RC, Muslim, Atheist, etc., but please, please do NOT plunge to the depths of guttersniping and ridicule. Leave that to the daily ranker hotline and such.
Saturday will be a emotional and long overdue day in our proud history. Let's enjoy it without grievances about how the ceremony is carried out.
I have warned fellow bloggers before, and will do again, of the perils of visiting the 'folly folly' site. Coat your stomach with antacids and have a bucket handy before taking the plunge.
Pete Doherty is such an erse that J-Lo once walked past him, and her erse said, "Whit a fecking erse."
Kojo,
(And I never thought I would say this to one of your blogs)
Amen.
Roll on tomorrow when we can get back to purely football matters, i.e, praising the Hoops and deriding TFOD. Enough of the loony-tunes bin it has descended into today. Takes one to know one!

What kind of society are we becoming when the expression of religious views in daily life, prompts outrage among atheists? Are we to now only express those narrow views held by a very small minority for the sake of political correctness?
Just so long as those views are not full of angst and intolerance, why do some feel the need to censor the views expressed earlier by Kojo?
Those who espouse different or NO religious views are free to hold them as they see fit, but surely not to deride or minimise the part religion beliefs play in many of our lives?

I thought I remembered something about St Pauli in an early edition of NTV but wasn't sure.
But if anyone wants to know why there is such a strong link get yourself over to the Millentor or share a drink with some St Pauli fans on our Euro travels.
Top club and top supporters. As I said I hope Celtic can do something to help them out.

I would hope that in this Sainted Refuge we would be happy to welcome anyone - even Mr Ursus! j/k
As an atheist myself, I can see how the blessing might be 'awkward' for non-Catholics. But Saturday is about commemorating Brother Walfrid in a way he would hopefully approve of, therefore, a Catholic blessing is surely appropriate for a Marist priest?

Why should the blessing be awkward for an atheist?
According to him it is all 'hocus pocus' so surely he can let that part of the ceremony fly over his head. I am sure a big boy like him will have no problem.
Some people just love to have something to complain about.
This is taking PC FAR too far!!!!!!

No it is about being told your beliefs are important but ours are not.

I reckon Paul is going to discuss the financial state of Celtic and something about rankers being in debt and Murray's financial masterplan.
He'll someow work in Fergus McCann being good, Desmond being Ok, The rise and fall of the the roman(ov)empire, the new hibs resurgence and he'll use loads of language I don't understand. He might manage to work the following words in:
amortisation
share issue
debt
playing stock
kojo's an erse
revenue
stock options
dividends
he might also mention the following:
1) bananas
2) bouncy castles
3) metronomes covered in dust
4) eggnog
5) red star belgrade.
Tell you what, I'll give a pound to charity for everyone of the above five he manages to work SENSIBLY into his article.
-
BhoyLondon,
I said it *might* be awkward for an atheist, it obviously would be for 6countys, by his own admission.
But it certainly doesn't have to be. Christenings, bar mitzvahs, weddings and funerals, if you go you go to celebrate the individual or couple, the religious content of the ceremony is as meaningful as you want it to be.
If you're going on Saturday, you're going for the man and the club, if you happen to be Catholic, so much the better for the blessing.

Kojo, I'm not sure I can be bothered with this however for the record I am not a practising atheist (what is a practising atheist anyway?) so do not "accuse" me of such with absolutely no evidence.
Also for the record I did not categorise your belief in God as drivel - so don't say that I did.
I'm afraid I took exception to the view in your post that somehow the miracle of life meant more to you as a practising christian than it would to someone who was not. That may not have been your intention but that's certainly how it came across.

The Statue Br. Walfraid is being blessed, you can opt in and bless yourself at the same time or not as is your wont! Posters on this site who have religious beliefs do not denigrate you, I would ask you to adopt the same tone and respectfully agree to disagree.
Can’t say enough good things about St Pauli, had the pleasure of their company in Stuttgart. I for one support the idea of a friendly to support and recognise their association with our club.
As far a Fallow Fallow (Better name in my view) are concerned, looks like the master race mentality is being replaced by fear and loathing. I feel sorry for them that the expressions of confidence by former minority groups (RC’s, Muslims, Atheists & Buddhists) threatens them so, unlucky because the world has moved on from them (EdwardU and a small band of cohorts exempted)
Is there a Rangers Quick News out there?!?!?

Great articles form the political economy of fottball.
Is Paul67's atricle to be found among these issues?
IRISH CONSORTIUM IN FOR VILLA - 1/11/2005
Aston Villa has received a preliminary takeover approach from an Irish property consortium. Although no offer has been tabled, the consortium's bid is believed to be worth 560p a share, valuing the club at more than £60m. Shares in the club rose on Monday by 57.5p or about 14 per cent to 475p. The consortium is being led by Michael Neville, chairman of World Television, a quoted media group. He is believed to be acting for Luke and Brian Cromer who are Irish property developers. Anyone acquiring the club will get a large stadium on which considerable work has been carried out, a valuable property portfolio and the chance to revive the 'sleeping giant of the Midlands' and lift it from its position perilously close to the bottom of the Premiership.
PROFITS SLUMP AT NEWCASTLE - 30/10/2005
Newcastle United saw its profit to disappear in the year to 31 July 2004 as television and broadcasting revenues fell by 17 per cent to £27.9m and it suffered exceptional operating expenses of £5.41m. The club finished a disappointing 14th in the 2004-5 Premiership campaign. Chairman Freddy Shepherd said, 'The level of overall performance achieved fell below the standards we set for ourselves.' The opening of 'Shearer's sports bar' did help to boost catering revenues by 28 per cent from £5.3m to £6.8m. Pre-tax profit collapsed from £4.22m to £16,000 on turnover of £87.1m, down from £90.5m. The operating loss after exceptionals was £8.97m, compared with £8.28m profit in the preceding year. Despite this news, the shares remain unchanged at 46p, valuing the club at £67m.
BT WON'T BID FOR FOOTBALL RIGHTS - 30/10/2005
BT has ruled out taking on BSkyB and other broadcasters bidding for live rights to Premiership football. The telecoms giant clarified its position when it provided more details of the new service it is to offer next year which will be delivered via a set-top box connected to a broadband telephone line. The head of BT's retail business, Ian Livingston, said, 'Given that we don't see ourselves as a broadcaster we think it unlikely that we will bid for broadcast packages in that sense.' There had been speculation that BT might use its financial muscle and take on BSkyB after the satellite brodcaster moved into the broadband arena last week when it bought Easynet, a small network rival to BT. The broader significance of these developments for televised football is that telecoms, cable and media companies are all starting to compete with each other in a bid to offer consumers 'triple play' services, a combination of telephony, television and internet. This blurring of boundaries is being driven by new technology based on Internet Protocol stabdards that radically increases the capacity of the traditional fixed line networks to carry data.

Big Joe,
don't be suspicious ( that is insulting )
I've said my piece, I've taken a doin', and I'm restrainng myself from arguing more about it. I didn't intend to insult anyone- I brought up the subject of religion because it is part of the proceedings on Saturday - and have apologised for one phrase.
Suporting Celtic is a football and community. Not religion. Hence...
OK, in the interests of peace, love and understanding I draw a line. Celtic is as close as I get to religion. The statue is a proud moment. It will be blessed.
I'll bite my lip and dream about Celtic winning the Champions league as the believers bless.

Hi Paul,
Noel90@2.54 I would love to know what she tasted like but as this is a family site I wont ask :)
Martinobhoy4.13 :- Thanks for that info, sometimes what is well known and obvious is a complete mystery to outsiders
John_H :- I can only answer for myself, I can't answer for the views of anyone else, like any other large group the Rangers support vary from likable to loathsome, but as with anything else you would have to ask each individual why they believe as they do.
Block101er :- Thanks for the further info.
BigJoe 5.07 :- You are partialy correct, my opinion is that the song is more a loyalist song than a Rangers one.
BhoyLondon :- You have hit the nail on the head, as an athiest I attend many ceremonies, marriages etc where a blessing is given, I tend to look on them the same way as say a christian would on a hindu or jewish blessing, personally meaningless but to others it's a central part of their life, so my view is accept the meaning behind it, wishing you wellbeing. even if you don't accept the existence f the being who is meant to be bestoing them

Following on from CelticBhoy's post, does anyone else get the impression that Sky Sport's dominance over the British sports broadcasting sector is coming to an end? Sky itself seems to be moving away from their core focus of subscription TV and into ISP and even Freeview.
It will be interesting to see how Sky Sports fits into this new model. Will Murdoch rein in ther spending? Maybe Sky will spin off their Sports broadcasting arm and creat a European equivalent of ESPN?
Who could compete? The new merged NTL and Telewest? Freeview's success has supposedly strengthened the hand of the BBC and ITV, but I still think they're wary of paying good money for sports.
If the SPL remains competitive for the season, it might tempt some of these guys to dip their toes back in the water ahead of the inevitable Premiership shakeup.

-
Paul, sorry about this.
Kojo, for accuracy look back at the order of the posts. You stated that I had characterised your reply (to Ardoch i think) as drivel etc etc.
For the avoidance of doubt I did not. My comment was squarely aimed at your initial post (for the reason outlined in my previous post to this one) and not any of the subsequent ones.
Can you just go back and check the order, agree with my point and then we can move on?
Now, about the Spanish Inquisition.....!

From the very start, Celtic rejected the, at that time understandable, temptation to become an exclusively all-Catholic club. Yet it was correctly regarded by the core of its supporters as an institution which offered their personal beliefs and practices a degree of respect not at that time accorded it by the rest of Scottish society.
Things have moved on since then, but not by as much as people would try to pretend that they have. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. Anti-Catholicism is, as the vast majority of posters on this site know fine well, still a powerful under-current in 21st-century Scotland and provides possibly the main raison d'etre for the nation's self-proclaimed "second-most important institution".
I make no apologies for still practising the faith I was born into. I respect all those who have drifted away or turned their backs on it for whatever reason. And I have the fullest respect for those who were born into other religions, whether still practising or not.
If I want to see or hear my religion being mocked, I need only open a newspaper or switch on a television. I do not expect to have to discuss it in this haven of all things Celtic. So let me, with apologies, reiterate Paul's words of wisdom:
This site is not for discussions of a religious or political nature. It is a CELTIC site.
So, please, let us all decide here and now to leave it out and concentrate on showing our fellow Celtic football fans, of all persuasions and none, RESPECT.
PS, My views on Celtic's youth policy can be found on:

6countiesfry as opposed to an ulster fry. Like the Ulster Unionists should be called the 6counties unionists. A 6countiesfry would be missing something, not the black pudding and hardly the cookstown saussages - now there would be sacriledge
Who minds if a statue is blessed as long as you yourself -
i) don't have to bless it
ii) don't have to genulflect in front of it iii) don't have to be blessed along with the statue
iv) wouldn't care if it was to be blessed by a buddist monk
In light of the fact that the man himself might have liked to bless his own statue, why not? Blessing a statue of Jock Stein would be a different matter. Let it rest.

-
I'm going to say my piece on this and probably have to put on that tin hat thats often used on this site but here goes....
The one thing that lets this site down is that when someone brings up the issue of religion, bigotry or whatever you care to call it, it (wow a twoser :-))changes into something that I dont particularly care to read. I've read this site now for over a year, possibly not long after its inception, and whenever the issue of religion comes to the fore it seem so detract from the high standard of debate thats made this site loved by all (including our pal Ed Urs).
Can we try to stick to all things football/celtic and forget about religion, we know bigotry's out there, of course we do, but by giving it "column inches" is not going to solve it!
Stick to the fitba lads, its what we're good at!

hi paul fellow celts .not been on for a couple of days , just caught up with the posts . one post from yesterday was from parkheadcumsalford 11.52 totally agree with your thoughts . as a fan of over 45years myself i too have seen us taking our friends across the city too lightly. they, like we would do , will roll their sleeves up and as they say will get into us. make no mistake about that .bet all us older celts will have seen this before when one team was odds on certs regards form to be soundly beaten. i have stated on this wonderful forum on many occasions though we are making huge strides forward and the emergence of our home grown talent .i feel we are too soft in midfield .and make no mistake they know that too, the boot will be going in ,and will be allowed to go in.so be warned g s. by all means let us have our bit of fun at their expense ,but i can tell you from bitter experience, unfortunately they will be back. and we must be prepared and ready for them . hail hail .

Do'nt know about the rest of you but I'm still recovering from the trauma of last season and believe that it really started to go pear shaped last november when McLeish was basically one loss away from the sack and what happened they won all six games. They stayed in europe, put us out of the CIS and beat us in the league and achieved momentuim for the rest of the season. Can it happen again, can we take another huge disappiontment especially now we all have belief in the team and management.
I believe strongly that the season will be decided in the next month, the feel good factor we are all enjoying for the first time in a while is fragile.
Or as I said at the beginning of the message am I suffering post traumatic stress syndrum.

Religious intolerance is at the root of all wars, easy to see why after today !
Anyway football, what a blow about Beattie. I don't think he would have started against rangers but he would certainly have been used from the bench for his injection of pace later in the game.
Anyone have any news on Magic ? We now have to hope that we don't pick up any more injuries upfront before the hun games.
Paul, looked what happened to Hearts after Foulkes comments, please don't tempt fate by making bold 'no contest' statements re the double header.

You are being a stranger to the truth, my friend.
It was a DELETERIOUS ATTACK on the CATHOLIC FAITH.
Your Remarks regarding the Archbishop were indeed SCURRILOUS
..and if I may add........UNCALLED FOR!
'FESS Up.........
Your whole submission.....REEKED of ANIMOSITY against the CATHOLIC FAITH.......
And now you have taken REFUGE in the ATHEISTIC INDIGNATION .....purporting that your ANTI-GOD sentiments were being infringed on.....
Huh?
Do you think that the valued members of this Wonderful Site, need your insidious detrimental rantings against the Catholic Faith?
Hey! Give us a Break......
At least Several of my fellow contributers saw thro' your Flimsy excuse!
We did not.... All-- FALL OFF THE LEGENDARY TURNIP TRUCK!
Hocus-Pocus,my friend is a corruption of what the Catholic Priest says during the Transubstantiation..
"Hoc est Corpus(meam)...."
"This is my BODY" at the Eucharist,
at the time of Transubstantiation"
in a Catholic Mass......
The Corruption is aimed at inferring that the Priest is a Charlatan.....As the term HOCUS-POCUS is used by many a Stage Magician as part of his SPIEL....
I take the phrase in question as a insult....directly aimed to demean my FAITH!
Please never use it willy nilly.
It is not nice!
Kojo.

Paul - You're quite right to keep religion and Irish politics well clear on this site. Part of the attraction on here is the 'mature' clientele. We are spared from the teenage (and non - teenage) typers who plague sites with fenian/orange/pape/hun (delete where appropriate).
Well played.

Hi paul, looking forward to tomorrows blog.
With the news that Beatie is out for six weeks, coupled with Zura still being a month away from full fitness what would everyone's strike force be?
I think that although Hartson and Sutton both played well on Sunday i don't know if that would be my first choice strike force, especially against TFOD. I would love to see Maloney upfront with Hartson/Sutton, and Mcgeady in midfield or Mcgeady upfront with Sutton/Hartson, and Maloney in his usual midfield role. My first choice would be Mcgeady and Sutton upfront.
Aiden has been on top form in the reserves and training lately and i wouldn't be surprised to see him get his chance soon. Especially now with the injuries and the fact that Naka and Petrov have internationals to play.

Bientot sur nos ecrans....
Celtic multi-media news, not hazy jingoism
See it (CQN), hear it (CQN), taste it (dusty screen/virtual KB), touch it (same dusty screen/same virtual KB), smell it (BS...sometimes - success...hope so).
Roll on ra' morra'.

My dear friend, St Anthony,
I hope you are not inferring that my defense of The Catholic Church as being classed as being Immature.
Surely you must recognize that one must offer some kind of defense against an obvious detrimental foray against the Papes?
There is a time to turn the other cheek.........
This is not one of those times...
I take it very seriously, that Celtic are at last honoring the ONE MAN, responsible for us being privy to such an unique enjoyment in Life.
That enjoyment comes direct from Watching the Child of that Wonderful Man's Idea.....
THE ONE.......THE ONLY........
GLASGOW CELTIC......
This is a privilege that I will not allow to be sullied!!!
Hail! Hail!
Kojo.

Kojo, I don't think 6counties intentionally tried to stir up any controversy. In fact, as an RC, I am not offended with anything he said.
This also is not an exclusive RC site so I don't think you should feel the need to fight any battles on behalf of any RC's on the site.

My learned friend Kojo,
You have me so wrong.
The timing of our posts was almost identical and my tirade was aimed at earlier posts.
As my father said, Celtic is for those of all faiths and of none, but we should never forget those great people who started our wonderful club.
Perhaps Celtic's greatest achievement is the formation of the club, in the wake of resentment and prejudice in the 19th century.
Andrew Kerins was a truly great man.
I too, take exception to those who castigate my faith and your post was a fine job in defending it.
As for the Latin, my old school motto was Sursum Corda, which I believe Mr Romanov will have a great difficulty in doing at the moment.
Regards,
Saint A.

I think what people are trying to get at is that in an ideal world, without religious bigitory/ sectarianism/racism (whatever you want to call it) people would not be upset about being blessed.
As a Catholic I would not take offense to being blessed by a priest of Jewish, Muslim, Protestant, Budist, Hindu or Sikh origins. All a blessing is saying is: "good luck". In a religious context it may mean may God be with you or something like that but all it really is, is a goodwill gesture.
I think people are annoyed because you seem like it is in some way going to tarnish you by being at a blessing. If this was the case then you must believe in something or else you wouldn't care.
Look on it as someone wishing you all the best and a good life.

6countiesfry, an inauspicious debut. Your posts can only get better from here. Kojo: enough already!!!!! Let it lie.
Moving swiftly on, Poland played England on the 12th of October, which was only 3 weeks ago!!! Zurawski is therefore likely to be out for another 3 weeks.
I thought Sutton and Hartson were excellent on Sunday......for the first 45 minutes. In the second half, however, Dundee Utd realised we didn't have the capability of stretching them at the back and pushed further up the pitch, which congested the midfield.
The risk is we again become one dimensional and predictable, but I see little option other than to play the 2 big guys up front.

Fitba, jist the fitba. Pull-eeeezze!
As for abandoned matches, there was the one against Hibs at Celtic Park around 1975 which was called off for fog which fell in the last 10 minutes ... after a pitch invasion had delayed the match by 10 minutes, with the Hibees ahead.
I think we won the replayed match.
I spent 45 minutes in darkness at the Allan Hunter testmonial at Ispwich, but we played on afterwards.

Kojo,,,Well articulated,I entirely agree with you.
