First ?

Posted this on the other post.
Does anyone know the rules of players rejoining teams on loan and if they can play on Jan 1st.
I was thinking of the likes of Skacel.
Also if it was written into the contract to extend the loan deal then does the same rule apply, like Keane that they can only be registered on the 1st since today (Friday) is outside the transfer window.
-
Second?
-
okay - third and fourth?
-
Paul67
I think that this years title is far from secure, dont know why you think Mc Geady is a cert to start his play is largely unproductive and he must improve this in the appropriate environment ,not the 1st eleven.
Personally if players are available in the window who would play a part in the CL if we get there, bring them now, dont wait.
I agree about big earners just hanging about no good to us or them.If they dont have a future time ti move on for all concerned.
-
bigjoe, you cant take your eye of it for one minute :))))
This game should be the game of the season so far.
Just hope hearts dont try and spoil it by trying to kick lumps out of our more flair players.
-
If they are on big money, on the fringe, not playing or are indeed unlikely to play in the near future i.e. not in WGS's plans then ship them out I totally agree with your economics Paul.
On another issue any news on a replacement right back who can tackle and more to the point pass the ball to a team mate in green & white hoops !!??
-
It looks as though Agathe has been swinging the lead. This quote from Strachan - on a possible loan deal to Middlesboro - suggests that Agathe was not available to him to select.
"I thought his injury might have obstructed him but he's got fit in the last few days."
-
Big K, you need to be quick to click with this lot.
A first first Ballymenabhoy?
Carroll77, Skacel will be playing on Sunday.
Dessybhoy, I agree, if we are looking to bring players in for next season, now is a good time.
There is a big decision to make with regard to Chris Sutton. I agree that we should offer a reduced contract, as we did with Lennon. If Chris wants to move on, we are as well letting him go now.
Hate to state the ovbvious, but you cannot make great strides forward without taking big steps.
Seamus, I am sure that we will sign a new right back for next season, and believe there is a possibility we will have one next month.
-
Paul, I wished I shared your confidence, especially re. not dribbling out of defence.
Personally I would take a point right now.
No matter what the result is on Sunday I think our defence needs a complete overhaul. Not just 2 full backs.
PS.
Does anyone know anywhere in the Hexham area where I could see the game.
-
Chris Sutton does not play enough matches to warrant a new albeit reduced cotract.
Hope there's a left back coming in as well because we have a glaring deficiency there and at right back.
My favourite player is Stan, however if he fails to turn up and get a grip off the middle area with NL then we are in trouble, because Hearts will put a lot off emphasis on winning that area off the park and Stan and NL must be equal to the challenge.
Get it right there and our flair players will do the business.
-
Nice to see another team get "the treatment" ahead of a big match:
see Ewan Murray's article on Hearts problems in The Guardian.

Personally I would like to see the two centre-backs replaced with Virgo and Du Wei.
Then at least we would have players who can pass the ball from the back.
Mcmanus has done ok but he is not Celtic class and Bobo at 28k a week is not economic.
Hearts will try to bully the young players and Naka so Lenny and BBJ have to be in their faces.
-
Hi Paul,
I think this might be my second first ?
-
Seamus67,
Look at the excellent interception and great pass for Naka to score the winner on Monday. RB I'm afraid. Give the guy a break. He has been consistently good for us this season but some have decided,(Like they prejudged Strachan)that he is not good enough.
SB
-
Dessybhoy ,
I extremely disagree with your views (and everyone else's for that matter) on McGeadys performances this season. He has been in exceptional form for a 19 year old playing under such pressure.
Look at the boxing day game again, for the penalty we recieved. Mcgeady started the move on the left , Cut inside one defender , diego maradona turn to beat another and released an exceptional pass which they conceded a penalty from. If Nakamura had did this you'd be raving about that amazing skill which changed the game.
In short Mcgeady has been man of the match against TFOD , exceptional against falkirk and aberdeen contributing goals , assists and tackling has improved to no end. Just because he misplaces a difficult pass dosent mean he has a dip in form. We allow nakamura , petrov etc. the luxury of a misplaced pass or two so why not McGeady.
Our support love to critisize , By all means go ahead , But critisism where its due NOT LAZY CRITISISM without substance to back it up!!!
Last boxing day (2004) we had our best game of the season at tynecastle (with Mcgeady starring bty) I expect it will happen again.
Hearts 0 - 3 Celtic (McGeady on the scoresheet)
-
First let me just say that i hope every Celtic fan has a happy and prosperous new year, regarding sundays game,i truly believe that if we play to our FULL capabilities and with no lapses in concentration then we will come away with three points,as for the transfer window,no club will sign a better,or more influential footballer than Roy Keane, hopefully he will not be the only new face at CP,i think we should be looking to offload at least two of the old guard,(perm any two from Thompson,Sutton,Agathe),the first two names have been wonderful servants and will always be well thought of,the latter is,imho,a player of limited ability,he showed flashes of what he was capable of but too infrequently for me,the recent tributes paid to him surprise me,at full back he was often caught on the wrong side of his man, when he joined in attack he broke up more moves than he helped to sustain, nothing personal against the guy,i just don't rate him.The savings in wages from shifting these guys on will enable us to strenghthen our squad before next seasons CL games,i believe we should be looking to get the new guys in now thus giving them ample time adjust to our game-plan.
-
Bearing im mind the certain starters in your article Paul )knowing WGS won't gamble too much) but is there not a case for switching Maloney & McGeady to their preferred positions?
-
Oops,should have said,"time to adjust",no criticism please,it's 5-30 am here,(USA,west coast).
-
My big worry for Sunday is that Hearts are a better team than Dunfermline, Inverness and Livingston, teams who we have really toiled against in the past couple of weeks.
We need to play a lot better than we have done to get anything out of this game.
Stan needs a big performance (if he's fit that is) and Lennon needs to be the boss in Midfield.
Would love to see Magic back in some way or another as he gives us something special up front.
I'd also love to see Agathe back in our team at right back. Can you imagine the passes Naka would be firing down the right wing with Agathe overlaping. Strachan has not gave him a chance as far as I can see.
Pressley and Webster will be ready for BBJ so we need to have have a few different game plans ready.
Hoopy New Year Everyone
-
Maloney and Mcgeady play onthe'wrong side'so they tend to cut inside, with the full backs overlapping, which is why he is persevering with Wallace as he's more of a natural winger.
Also if Shaunaldinho and Aiden are inside it gives them a better target for their undoubted shooting prowess.
I think JH will relish the physical challenge.
My main concerns are Stan's fitness, and the defence.
The problem with Bobo is not that he makes mistakes, but that he persists in making the same mistake again and again,so don't be surprised if you're watching some of the game from behind the couch.

Pressley suspended for Sunday.
-
-
JonG,
dont think he is the best player in the world but they will miss his strength and leadership.
-
Pressley is not suspended. From the Edinburgh Evening News -
"Contrary to reports which have continued to circulate this week, captain Steven Pressley is available for the weekend.
The Scotland star is one caution away from picking up a two-game ban and will line up in his usual place in the centre of defence against the league leaders, who have a four-point advantage over Sunday's hosts."
Glad to hear it - no excuses!
-
SUPERCELT:
He is the organiser and as you say is a strong player.
I think BBJ will keep Webster occupied and if NL and Stan can keep on top off Hartley,Naka and Maloney will keep them pushed back.
God this place is quiet without our friend!
-
either way if we can control the midfield and keep them away from bobo and the backline bhoys. we should be ok.
It is ik for you JonG. He has my mobile no. and has just dicovered the art of texting. :))
-
We all have our crosses to bear SC alas yours is quite a heavy lump off wood!
Pressley quotes in an article in the daily record(i know) that he starts a two day suspension from the day off the Celtic game.

That should say daily record dated 21st December

yep,
we will beat hearts with or without him.
sorry could not resist.

Can't sat that I share the unbridled optimism of some of the posters about Sunday's game. I agree that if all of our players play at their best, then we will win no matter how well they play. However, recent performances, especially in defence, have given me cause for concern, for the reasons well documented on this site.
There will have to be a major upturn in form for us to get the three points IMO. Make no mistake, this will be a severe test on Sunday, and I hope that we are ready for it. Right now, I would be happy with a point.
-
OOPS. For"sat", read "say". Sorry
-
Does anyone else feel that when WGS has a fall-out with a player it tends to be a major set-to with no way back..
Agathe,Pearson,Camara,Tommo
etc.all seem to have upset him one way or another and paid the ultimate sanction.Redheads and all that??.
-
Until we get RK and a couple off good defenders you could be right PLATO.
I do feel though that Hearts will try to load up midfield for this game and, if so we've got to make sure we boss it.
This is where Stan and NL are so important.
Our flair players must be protected and allowed to make the passes and runs to keep Hearts back in defensive mode.
-
Agree this is a real test for our players on Sunday! We need them all to be playing at their best and ignoring whatever headline story the red tops decide to bring out: Whats the odds it will go along the lines of (insert any name from DD to WGS) Blah set to quit Celts!!!
I am going for a 3-4 victory!
Vinnie- apologies but you have been in my thoughts!
-
I think we have enough in the tank to beat Hearts confortably. The defence will be under no illusions what their job is and will be more focussed. Get that sorted and we are more than halfway there.
On McGeady, didn't think he had his best game on Boxing day, that said towards the end of his appearance he made a fantastic turn on the touchline taking out 2 players and releasing Wallace. That showed tremendous character when not performing at his best and playing in front of a tetchy, jangly crowd. He is one of the most gifted 19 yo's in Europe and we would be crowing about him if he played for another team. But, he needs time and patience to develop.
When is young Irvine going to be fit? With youth being given free reign this season, I believe he would have had a run in the team.
On signings, the Lecce, Finnish guy, cant see us going for another midfielder. On the old guard, only see us letting people go if there is a replacement on the way. We have about 6 first team squad strikers and were down to the bare bones recently.
-
Just looked in the "newsnow" site, and found a story from Leeds Vital Football, which states that Agathe has picked Leeds over the 'Boro. It also quotes WGS saying that Agathe should look elsewhere because his contract is up in the summer.
However, I am not sure if they know who they are getting. Check out the picture of Didier. I know it's a long time since he has been seen in the first team, but I don't think he has changed this much, has he?
-
I don't think he's had a fall out with all off them TIMOOT,Thomson and Agathe yes,the others just not getting a game,or in Camaras case dropped.
-
timoot - Pearson seems to have had a fall out with MON and GS. I we are going to off load, he'd be at the top of my list as he must have an attitude problem cos he's not a bad player. Although I dont think he suits our team now.
It would be a great start to the year getting 3 points on Sunday. So up for the game now.
-
Story today that Lee Bowyer may look for a transfer after his latest indiscretion, but that his wages may put off some clubs.
He's on 35k a week!
Is it me getting old,or is the world going mad?
-
On the "SkySports" website, there is a story about Celtic wanting to sign a 15 year old "starlet" called Anders Jacobsen. He has been over for a trial, and he seems to have impressed Celtic enough for us too offer him a deal from either the summer of 2006 or 2007.
-
Paul67,
While your posts are generally spot on, I have to take issue with the points regarding transfers.
Firstly I don't think we should make any decisions regarding the result/performance in this game.
Yes we are AGRUABLY playing against or strongest opposition, we none the less have literally gone from the sublime to the ridiculous this season.
My view:
If we win great, seven points clear, not home and dry but we have kicked our heels
If we draw still four points clear, work to do but we are looking good
If we lose only one point in it so lets dig deep – (But less chance TFOD in the CL)
What ever the scenario, we carry on strengthening with an eye on next seasons CL..
Secondly, the transfer market will be all over the place in the summer, come March, the majority of quality players will think no transfer talk till after the World Cup Final.
As we are all aware with a World Cup in the offing a Players value is on a Rollercoaster, how much will Boruc be worth in August??. After the final there is a small window with lots of activity. (unless of course we can win the CL with Scottish players alla – JS)
One thing I whole heartedly concur with – a January clear-out is a must: Timtoot is correct WGS seems to have a ’My way or the heighway’ approach to management!
-
Well I remember many years ago sitting in Fergie's office in Aberdeen and he told me WGS would start a fight in an empty hoose and bore a terible grudge at times. Fergie should know since he was just as bad.
I seem to remember the same thing being said about Mon.
-
big liam
Hope you are right and I am wrong, we will see in time.
-
I'm not criticising WGS and I feel we need a strong Boss with the diverse characters we have now.I also think he has done really well after that bad start.
However, just makes me wonder a wee bit re RK and his strong opinions on the game and his team-mates.Should be an interesting few months ahead!
-
if we were not optimistic about beating hearts would there be any point in turning up.
O.k. it will not be a stroll in the park but come on.
They beat falkirk 4-0 and will raise there game for the mighty hoops but we must be confident of beating them if we are going to go on and win the league.
-
I'm optimistic SC and I truly think we will beat the Jambos and it may not be as tight as some are suggesting on here.
My only concern is us being a wee bit lightweight in mid-field. Maybe a place should be found for Virgo. He's a big strong lad and can look after himself and our wee men.
Don't see much sense even having Pearson, Agathe, Thommo etc on the bench since they now know they are offski. It can hardly motivate them unless the shop window effect is necessary.
-
It says on the BBC that we are taking a Finn called Ermenko from Lecce on trial,on the recommendation of the chief scout.
In another piece it said we were looking at 150 players, worldwide.
Hearts 5 Falkirk 0,btw.
[probably a deadcat bounce]
-
Platowasa Tim......
we all ready have him ..... if is the young Canadian boy, if it's that same boy i'm thinking about.
-
supercelt
Agree that we have to be optimistic but one look at Hearts' home record shows this is going to be a toughie. Ten games played, nine wins and only two goals conceded.
Plus I think most people would agree we will probably have to score twice to guarantee a win.
-
Well said SC.
We must and are in the main believers or as you say why turn up.
Hearts score flattered them.
They almost went to 2-1 and Falkirk had a man sent off.
We would have most certainly have won by as many as them in the circumstances.
Today's buzz word...repeat after me CONFIDENCE!
-
ps Ermenko has 6 appearances,3 as a sub,no goals and plays in midfield.
His favourite actress is Angelina Jolie and he has supported Celtic since he was a wee boy.
-
gerry i think the young canadian is jacob lensky.
confidence csc
-
leabgarrow - On the Ermenko loan deal, I think WGS is looking to strengthen in midfield as we will probably lose Thommo, Pearson and Agathe in Jan so it will be an area he'll want to have plenty of cover.
Also given that Stan is carrying an injury, Lennie must be getting pretty knackered and Keano might be prown to an injury or two himself, it is an area he has concerns about.
IMHO though we would be better placed getting a solid CB or two in, or at least giving Du Wei a run in the first team, though I think there may be a clause in his cotract which has kept him out thus far.
Paul - Would you know if this is the case?
/Bishop B
-
I think you've just described NOEL...Dontbrattback!
confidence!
-
Mcgeady started the move on the left , Cut inside one defender , diego maradona turn to beat another and released an exceptional pass which they conceded a penalty from
Agree with Big Liam here - just what do the support expect of McGeady ?
-
Gerry
For once, supercelt is right!! It is not the young Canadian, but a young Swede who we are now after. Don't know anything about the young chap, but we sure seem keen, (or should that be KEANE), to sign him
-
Given that Lecce are 18/20 in Serie A you could well be right!

i hope confidence csc does not become over, or misplaced confidence csc!!

The word'nutter'is a bit nuttist in this day and age, when great talents like F.Jeffers and F.Nieto are being hounded out of Scottish football by the mountebanks and lollygaggers who are dragging our so-called national game into the cesspit.

I think the Canadian kid on our books is Jacob Lenske.

I have this dreaded feeling he's watching from the dark side.....

Sundays team:
No changes!
-
Paul,
I think this will be a tough game. Probably a bit of a war, with hertz diving into tackles and trying to wind up Lennon. At this point, I'd take any result we can get. Can't help thinking I'd be happier if Sutton was playing. Our wee bhoys are in for a testing afternoon.
Looking down the road, I think Stan will get a break when Keane is available. Strachan has already commented that he'd like to spot Stan, but can't.
Transfer window.....players who come in don't have the benefit of pre-season training to get to know the staff, nor do they have the benefit of easy pre-season games. So....we should only be bringing in 2 types of players. First, guys who will walk into the team (like Keane). Second, players for next season, where it makes sense to grab them now (any of the young Scottish fullbacks that we have been linked with).
Also, Tynecastle will see the end of this back 4. No manager would want to re-tool the defense at this point in the season, but needs must. We have a few more ups and downs ahead of us in what will prove to be an interesting, and successful season.
Happy New Year to all CQN'rs....

Big Liam 12:56
Spot on. Imagine what a player he's going to be by the time he's Shaun Maloney's age. It's a shame he's become the new dog to kick for some people.
Don'tbrattback..
Check out the Finish guy's scoring record in the WC qualifiers. Really hope we get this guy, especially if Petrov ends up leaving.
-
night fever, night feeever!
-
He scored 5 goals in the qualifiers in a difficult group, although mainly against the weaker teams,so he might do for the S.P.L.
Really hope Petrov doesn't end up leaving, and hope we're bringing in some fullbacks on trial as well.
-
Shabhoy@12.47 you say that you want to see Du Wei and Virgo replace Mcmanus(not Celtic class) and Balde(at 28k not economic)I do not know what Balde is paid but whatever salary he is on was negotiated by the club to retain his services.I do not think it should now be used as a stick to beat him with or indeed that a player`s salary should be the criterion used to decide whether he should play. This is something that should be considered at the negotiation of contract stage and if agreed beteween club and player should then be honoured. My memory of the time when Balde was exploring his options regarding leaving/staying is that both MON and GS stated that he was correct and honourable in his dealings with the club.At the start of this season we had the unedifying spectacle of Rangers trying to force players out the door who were contracted to the club.If Balde or any player is overpaid I see that as the fault of the club.If the club wishes to remedy the situation they should put the player up for sale or renegotiate a more appropiate salary when the present deal expires
-
My oh my how quickly opinions can change.
We hate strachan, we love strachan, we beat rangers twice and we can't remember who martin o'neill was - "that guy who made us play punt and hunt football?", we have a blip in which we drop a few points and the question marks are out again.
Similarly, Balde is a liability who is paid too much, balde is the best defender at the club, balde is a nightmare and must be sold now...
Of course, football is all about opinions and emotion, but surely there is a need for some reasoned evaluation. Perhaps Paul is planning a 2005 synopsis for tomorrow, but reflecting on the last 12 months is quite a sobering experience.
Between May and July we had 2 of the worst results in the clubs 117 year history. We lost the most important manager since Mr Stein, and had the biggest turnover of football personnel since goodness knows when.
And yet, come the turn of the year we are at the top of the league, our team is playing attractive and most of the time winning football, we have some excellent young scottish prospects staking a claim, some important players due to return from injury, a certain roy keane waiting in the wings, and a manager and chief executive keen to continue trimming the dead wood away and replace it with fresh timber.
Sure things are far from perfect, but the future looks brighter than it did this time last year, for me at least.
-
In Lanzarote (Puerto del Carmen=, unsure of the best Irish bar to watch the game, any ideas?)
Completely agree about the criticism about McGeady and to an extent Wallace (in old position). When these guys have been in the last third I beleive they have been so effective it is incredible, especially for young players. Yet when they try someting (which they are more than entitled to!) and it doesn´t come off the response from the fans is not only aggressive but quite alarming.
Not the best environment for these players to gain the confidence they need to perform at the top of their game!!

Can't understand the bullishness on here about Sunday (admittedly I do tend to err on the more cautious / pessimistic side).
Have you guys been watching the same defence and lightweight midfield as me these last few weeks. There seems to be in some quarters a willingness to ignore the defensive frailties we have witnessed in every match since (and including) the rangers league game).
I cannot see us not conceding and can easily see us losing a couple. This will require 3 for a win against a hearts side who althought not as strong as earlier in the season are showing signs of recovery and will have their very strong defense intact.
I hope we win and win comfortably but personnally will be delighted with a draw. I will also not be surprised if we succumb to them 1-0 or 2-1.
Some stats:
- Hearts have played 10 times in the league at Tynecastle winning 9 drawing 1 and losing 0 ( a better home record than us).
- Hearts have scored 22 times at home and only conceded 2 goals in the 10 games played to date (again a better home record than us).
I suppose you can make statistics tell you many things however these stats (and the evidence of my own eyes in recent weeks) suggest to me that Sunday will be tough and the foregone conclusion some are suggesting is not the obvious outcome.
If we do win i reckon this will be our biggest win of the season and even i am likely to concede that we should have given ourselves the breathing space we need to go on and win the championship.

Posted the same stats at 3:26 this afternoon. Like you I think they point to it being our toughest game this season. Only 2 goals conceded in 10 games is a tremendous record and when you consider our defensive frailties I honestly believe we are looking at needing to score twice to give us a chance of winning.
-
Martinobhoy - hope we are both wrong and the bhoys skoosh it!
A repeat of boxing day 2004 would be perfect. Just wish I had a ticket.
Happy New Year to all when it comes.
-
Chairbhoy, how we spend our money next month is a value judgement, and I will agree, the correct course is not clear.
If we win on Sunday my judgement would be to pair the ‘dead wood’ back and save the money for our CL assault.
I will agree that new players should be brought in early if possible to give them a chance to settle before the CL.
We also agree that another clear out is due.
Timoot, GS had problems in the summer with some of the senior players which came to a head during that first awful week (this is not speculation on my part).
There is only one boss.
Len Brennan, I have wondered the same on why Du Wei has not played, though I have no confirmation. I suspect that money has something to do with it.
Weeron, agree on all points.
Druiddude, you are correct that Balde was honourable in the negotiation of his contract. I know for a fact that he rejected two better offers, however, I would grab any chance to get him off the books. Circa £29k per week is not where we he should be.
The ball is round, I am going to wait until everyone is back at work before doing my review of 2005. Thanks for the pointers.
Frank from Bedlington, interesting stats; should make for a 0-1 victory then, John Hartson goal.
-
Can't wait for sunday's game, the challenge from Hearts has really brightened up this league race, with dignity fc as bad as they are i'm glad someone is able to give us a decent contest. On another subject,is the F Nieto currently being released by Rangers the same wonder kid they signed at the start of the season?,if so then colour me shocked and stunned,at the time of his signing he was portrayed as the best thing since sliced bread, now,in the space of four short months he is deemed not good enough to get a game for the team currently clinging on to fifth spot,Ibrox must have some type of Bermuda triangle effect on players talent,it just seems to vanish as soon as they sign on the dotted line over in the south side, future targets should beware.
-
Frank
The optimist in me says that although they have only conceded 2 goals in 10 games they haven't faced anyone like Nakamura yet.
So 2-1 to the Hoops with a bit of Nakamura magic being the difference. Although I do believe it will still be our toughest game so far this season.
-
i'm a wee bit worried that we're letting a few of our big men go quite so easily.
folk are on here shouting for balde and sutty to leave. thanks for the memories n' that.
i feel we need both.
we have lost a slight physical edge to our game this season and teams know it.
they are bullying us now.
also when was the last time we scored from a corner?
we've only got BBJ and Balde and if he goes we're struggling for any height advantage in their box as well as ours!!
we will need them both for the run-in.
you can take that one to the bank!
i don't know who it was who asked the question about why does naka get 2 or 3 mistakes but aiden doesn't?
i agree with whoever it was. Aiden should not be getting abuse for trying to win us a game of football.
he and naka try to change things in a game but aiden gets the abuse if it doesn't go right.
i think we all forget he's so young.
some supporters are like the dads who criticise their son's ability at football rather than encourage.
it will do aiden and our team no good whatsoever.
i think its up to us to turn to the abuser and kindly ask him/her what benefit is aiden and the team going to gain from you acting like that?
i think you should be able to gauge whether he/she will take kindly to your words or not before you say it!!!
i always noticed moves broke down when they got to henrik because he was ALLOWED by us the freedom to try THE MOVE that would win us the game.
and he knew it!
we need to give our team, especially the young uns the same freedom.
we can only win if we do.

I think your comment re. Naka is valid even tho' he did play in the 1-1 honme game. in that game however I think his effectiveness was limited by the formation which included Alan Thompson.
I hope Paul is right and that BBJ breaks his Tynecastle duck.
-
Paul,
Have to agree with Frank from Bedlington. Maybe we older Tims are too used to disappointements. Hearts look as if they want to make the game a battle. I wouldn't fancy our lightweights in that situation. Here's hoping we win but I would happily settle for a draw at this minute.
I think too we should get in players now. The summer with the World Cup will cause us big problems. We need a right back, since Agathe seems to have blotted his copybook, which saddens me. Pearson too looked a good bet to me. We could have used his pace regularly recently. I do think that McGeady should be rested again (which doesn't mean that I don't think he has great potential but he is only 19). Thompson has been a great servant, as I expected, and Sutton seems to be more and more injury prone. Let them go and here's hoping somebody comes in for Bobo and we let him go.
Du Wei and Virgo should be brought in as soon as possible.
A guid new year to ane and aw.

I think my previous posts got buried, so here’s my quiz offer again – a Hogmanay alternative to getting drunk or troubling your head about who Celtic’s back four should be
As I live outside the UK I was unable to subscribe for the recent share issue, so I am offering the winner of the quiz FIFTY POUNDS to be spent in the Celtic Shop.
If Paul will be so good as to let me have the address of the winner, I will forward a cheque.
The winner is the Celtic supporter who submits the first completely correct answers on the site IN THE NEW YEAR. (So no submissions before midnight on New Year’s Eve.)
Just give me the full names (forename and surname) of the following team of former Celts, playing in a 4-4-2 formation, though the clues relate mainly to the surname only.
GOALKEEPER
Think of a pop star; think of tennis stars.
RIGHT BACK
A Cornish dancer.
LEFT BACK
One of the Seychelles islands.
CENTRAL DEFENDER
His namesake just couldn’t stand the Reds (and I don’t mean Liverpool).
CENTRAL DEFENDER
Shoes in the Irish tongue.
MIDFIELDER
A regal English forename. Shares his surname with a famous Irishman born in Scotland.
MIDFIELDER
Fiery, like a bard.
MIDFIELDER
His brother wasn’t bad either. Wasn’t he the PM?
MIDFIELDER
Way down south in Gaeldom.
STRIKER
Shares his surname with English poet Thomas, but is more alliterative.
STRIKER
An Irish dog of a striker. But wasn’t he Scottish?
-
Frank
Sorry, I meant they hadn't faced anyone like Nakamura at Tynecastle in relation to their excellent home defensive record.
-
DontBrackbatt and Chairbhoy - from previous post, Thanks for the history, I was aware of the Saxons and where they came from etc. I just remarked that I hadn't heard English people referred too as such "for yonks".
As a youngster I thought that Geordies (being different from your average Pomm) were the remnants of the Angles or Jutes, the Saxons being a little bit further south, but then I heard about the Edinburgh punter and the pig which he threw over the wall!
Ah well

Totally agree Emjay with allowing players to make mistakes.Used to annoy me when Henrik tried something that didn't come off there were cries of "nae luck" and applause and rightly so.Then a less idolised player would try something and get roundly abused.
Young Aiden is one of the most naturally gifted players I have seen.If he doesnt progress over the next few years it might be because his confidence is shot by the so called supporters.
Bottom line-if he pulls on the Hoops and gives his all then we should give our all to him.
-
It's not even to do with if a player is gifted or not - the fact is McGeady is only 19 - he get's treated like a senior player when the likes of Lawson would get far more slack even though he is superior in age.
Just because he makes mistakes doesn't give the fans a right to say he's this or he's that - think what he'll be like when he's 22 or 23!
-
John H...I agree...mostly. Wee Jinky got away with some awful days, while guys like Yogi and Tom Callaghan got it on the neck week in week out.
On the Naka/McGeady comparison....I think that Naka is the ultimate 'team' player. If he has a weakness, it is not doing the individual thing often enough.
Aiden, on the other hand, has that wee attitude thing that hints at the possibility that it will all end in tears. While he has improved this season (he doesn't give the ball away as much)...he still has a habit of using 5 touches when one would do.
Having said all that, I fully agree that he should be given as much support and encouragement as we can muster.
-
Druidude,
Appreciate your comment.
As far as I know BB is contracted to 2009.
If you think he's worth 5 million of the club's money then you must rate him highly.
The deal with Bobo was a gamble that backfired and I wish him all the best in the African Nations Cup
-
Weeron
It's that wee selfish attitude that seperates good players or even great players from the legends. I'm not saying that McGeady will become a legend - I doubt it but at 19 he is playing at <50% of his potential... you never know.
Let's face it, in normal circumstances he wouldn't be expected to make it into the first team for another few years yet. He is still a kid - albeit one with masses of self-confidence (which he will need if he is to survive in the cauldron that CP can be these days).
-
What's all the concern about the defence?Apart from the fact we have one full-back susceptable to pace, the other has no positional sense,Bobo is prone to the odd disaster, young McManus (after a good start)has gone off the boil,I don't see what everybody is so worried about.Honestly you are a bunch of pessimists:-)
The defence is THE key area for us on Sunday. If they do their job we will win as I believe we are stronger in mid-field and upfront than Hearts are.
Hearts might have gubbed Falkirk last week but in the month before they looked anything but world beaters.
Everybody and his auntie has got an opinion on BBJ,I believe if he gets the service he scores goals, its up to the mid-field to get the ball on the deck, get it down the wide channels and give him the ammunition.
So BBJ to break his tynecastle duck, the defence to have a combined blinder and Celtic take the three points.Easy innit!
Happy New Year to one and all.
yours John-b.
-
Who's the ref on Sunday? Will he let Hertz boot Nakamura back into 2005 ?
-
Of course he will!
-
I think we'll beat Hearts by 2-0 or so. We won't be back to our best but will be a gear up from them.
I know about Hearts' record but they've gone off the boil, we've overtaken them and our players will see this as an obvious opportunity, not as a game to be feared.
2-0, decent service to BBJ and at least one goal from him. I can't see us dominating the game but I don't expect to read that we were lucky after the win.
Any other optimists around?
-
Trotternish 7:58 I have a handful of the players, just got your question style sorted.
-
Longtime viewer, first time poster.
All of the suggestions, regarding the Celtic team formation, for the Hearts game....... have one glaring omission.
Nowhere, as far as I can see, is the fact that Petrov has been a veritable passenger, in the past 3 games.
Excuses have been made.
Face the facts,gentlemen.
Petrov, is not suffering from any type of injury......... No....... He has just reverted to type.
He is undergoing the normal dip in his form.
He is simply a stop and go type of player.... combining occasional good performances, with a number of indifferent displays.
Personally, I am astonished that there is not more of a hue and cry, regarding his recent very below par performances.
I hope that Strachan, sees the light and drops this passenger type player, for the Hearts confrontation.
We are needing to have every player, functioning in all cylinders on Saturday.
-
Kojo...???
-
Trotternish,
2 to get i think!
-
jackanapes;
Agree that Stan has been off the boil the last couple of games but he has not been 100% fit.
I'm sure he played with a calf injury against Hibs and clearly struggled, and against Inverness last week took an ankle knock.
One thing I would say about Stan, when he's at the top of his game then the team play well.
Maybe the teams recent sluggish displays have been as a result of Stans below par performances.
-
shabhoy,
spot on, it comes in many guises methinks..........
-
Jackanapes,
Agree that Stan is an inconsistent player.
Too much is expected from him in every game and we have no quality back up - like a Liam Miller to give stan a rest and take the pressure off.
I think this why GS is looking at other midfielders.
Hope fully with Roy Keane in the side this will give Stan the platform to flourish consistently.
-
milothewhippet,
Think about this...
Do you in all sincerity, believe for one moment, that Strachan, would in all common sense.....allow a half-fit player to represent Celtic?
That defies logic.
No, I am afraid that one must face the fact that Petrov is a very ordinary player.
He did show flashes of World Class ability a few weeks ago.
But that effort, I am afraid, has drained his batteries, to such an extent, that he has been unable to put in a decent shift since.
And please do not think that I am Kojo.
He is not the only one who can identify a stop and go type of player.
Petrov, has a past history of disappearing for long period in previous games.
Think, Euro games, in particular.
I hope that Strachan agrees with my views and drops Petrov, for Saturday against the Hearts.
-
Welcome Jackanapes, I hope you have a tin hat on.
Petrov is a fine talent, but as you have observed, his influence comes and goes.
He is not quite a match winner. Maybe Keane will have a positive influence.
Richard81, you are doing well.
-
Ian Brines is the ref on Sunday
Thats us against 12 again.
-
Jackanapes, what you say about Stan's recent form is irrefutable but please do not call him an ordinary player. He is much more than that and I believe he will become a great player under RK's influence.
-
Paul67,
Is the Petrov "can do no wrong camp" in such a majority, that one should always treat Petrov with kid gloves....or face the consequences?
I would like to think that there must be a few more pragmatic individuals around than Kojo and I.
Otherwise, God help us!
I watched Petrov in particular, very carefully, in his last performance.
His distribution, was woefully inept, resulting in the cardinal sin, in my mind, anyway. ...of, giving the ball away...... that, is the mortal sin, that can allow the opposition to run rampant.
Never, under no circumstances, should a professional footballer, give the ball away, cheaply, to the opposition.
Not good, at all.
The decision is an easy one.
Drop the persistent offender.
Neeed I say more?
-

Any of you folks this weeks transfer code for the herald's fantasy football. I am competing with a hun in my work for manager of the month and desperately need the code for tomorrows games. Wasnt able to grab a herald this week.

-
The Celtic site is offering supporters the chance to ask Gordon Strachanask Gordon Strachan a question (Gordon answers your questions).
Obviously us all here at CQN want to know
Q Gordon, what are your views on amortisation?
Q Do you think Scottish footbal is rife with lazy gingerism?
Q Who is Fargo?
Q What have they done with noel90?
Q Are you up for the CQN Oscars?
Well I assume they are the questions CQNers want answered, any others?
-
Disagree with Jackanapes that Stan is an ordinary player. However, as we were discussing earlier,he is one of the sacred cows who can do no wrong as far as the majority of the support are concerned.
Players like BBJ must be very envious of Stan and others like him who sometimes get away with murder.
Another one at the moment is Zurawski. He didnt make a big impact at first, came on to a bit of a game and has then been injured for weeks. In my opinion the jury is still out on him but many would start him before BBJ and cant wait for his return.
Why?What exactly has he shown us to prove he is a must have in the team?
I am also ashamed of some "supporters" glee at the thought of Tommo leaving the club.Yes, his time is up, but we should be very sad to see such a player go and he shouldgo with our thanks and applause ringing in his ears.
Ok thats the rant over.
Happy New Year to you all.
-
Jackanapes -
first-time poster my *rse
i take it the last 3 games included the ICT game - he was clearly struggling with a knock
given your agenda to downgrade stan/prove that he is a journeyman, what do you have to say about the rest of the teams performances in the last 3 games - what about lennon in particular -
didnt see stan with his hands in the air - not willing to accept a pass - surely lennon's form has been poorer - and his excuse
this season - perhaps stan has been inconsistent - as you yourself said World Class in flashes
there will be a lot of ordinary players available in January. we should sign the lot if they are capable of World Class moments
think euro games indeed - the Nou Camp where he was Barca class -
think of the endo of last season - stan + 10 trying to win the league - was like watching mcstay -
battling in vain
ah feck it - sell him
after all Virgo will come good

Go away - you are out of your depth here!

-
jackanapes,
i watched stan last week and he was clearly struggling to run so yes Gordon should have hauled him off or shouldn't have started him.
if he thinks pearson, lawson and tommo can't do a job on livi then heaven help us.
i was angry watching stan against livi. at him for saying he was fit and at Gordon for playing him when he clearly wasn't.
a fully fit petrov can win us games.
i think roy will bring out the consistency in him to take his game to the next level.
i was also angry at lennon throwing his hands up in the air again when he didn't get the right pass.
not a captain's job.

Shabhoy Thanks for your response of 8.53--I think to evaluate a player as being worth £5 million (or not) without reference to what we would get to replace him for that sum is meaningless,As I have no idea what is available on the market I can only judge him on what we have at the club.Perhaps when we see Du Wei and more of Virgo we may have a better option there but at present I feel Balde is the best we have. I do not have a fixation about keeping him.In fact I was prepared to see him go this time last year on the understanding that a suitable replacement was secured. That would be my attitude to any of the players. What makes me uneasy is that everybody seems to know what he is (over?)paid(£23000,£25000,£280000,£29000)which does not appear to apply to other players.I believe that this was a big factor in him being booed last week.Contrast with the patience shown towards the two full backs ,one of whom a poster believes is the worst player to play for the club.I think a player should play if he is the best we have and should be judged on his performance on the pitch. If he has the good fortune to be overpaid he is not alone in that.I feel he has done the club some service and if he goes I would not like to see him go with our affection and respect.
-
Please disregard "not" in last sentance
-
i think balde is the best defender at celtic park.
i've not seen du wei or virgo enough to comment.
until we know for sure we have someone who can do the job balde does we can't let him go.
i'm not his biggest fan but there's no one immediate to put in his place.
it would be have been interesting to see what Gordon would have done if balde had not been going to africa.
i hope du wei and virgo are the answer.

Whilst I agree that Petrov is a good player who has shown great promise, he now needs to deliver and up until the past 3 or 4 weeks (until return from International v Mexico) I felt he was looking like doing this. The media hype was in overdrive but that is not entirely his doing.
IMO there are concerns over his current form and tendancy to float in and out of games. However I cannot think of better options at this stage, especially with Sutton not disposed toward contributing and Thompson's limitations having been repeatedly shown up playing in centre mid.
I think Stan has to play and really do hope he will be the key, as he has in big games in the past !
-
Jackanapes:
I can see your (and Kojo's) point that Petrov is not the greatest player ever to have pulled on the Hoops, and that some of his performances have been poor. In particular, I agree that he has been relatively anonymous in European games.
Might not excessive travel and international commitments be partly to blame for some of these sub-par on-field shows? And didn't Etims make reference to family problems last week as possible explanation of Petrov's recent poor performances?
And isn't football supposed to be a TEAM game? The dynamics within the squad are invisible to us, and possibly also the dynamics of the team on the field also, but these should be apparent to WGS and his troops.
My fervent hope is that the last 5 months have been spent by WGS in cool, unemotional and completely professional (i.e. discounting his personal take on how simpatico an individual is to him) attitude focussing on functional matters: who can do what for the team, with whom, how professionally, and how consistently.
-
Thanks for your best wishes Jackanapes. Whenever I have questioned Petrov I get accused of all sorts. Welcome to Paranoia Avenue.
Many thanks Shabhoy. Hope 2006 is great to us all.
Excellent Historyreader, I would love to hear what he thinks about amortisation :-)
Go for it whitedoghunch.

Trotternish ... Dagnabbitt! There was me thinking I was quids in with half of the players. Away back to old Celtic Annuals now.
Jackanapes ... Hmm! Where have I seen a similar style of prose with a similar outlook on Stan before : )
As regards getting on peoples backs. I'm assuming that wee Aiden McGeady tries the same skills in training (I'd stand on the ball and end up on my arse me) and must get the plaudits and from his fellow professionals when they come off and derision when there may be an easier option on when they don't come off (everyone likes to win, even in training matches). I'm assuming that they know at least as much as us about football and have first-hand knowledge as to how much confidence plays a part in performances, so I'm sure re-assurance is given there. Still agree that we shouldn't get on players' backs though for the odd mistake irrespective of their age.
Think it will be tough against Hertz and will take a point ... BBJ to break his Swinecastle duck though please.

Wooooofty, after scanning today's posts ahead of the game on Sunday, I can't help but keep the wry smile from my face after being lambasted for wishing a Rangers victory a few weeks ago.
Similarly, as much as I fully expect us to garner the full three points on Sunday, we should not be so complacent as to pussy-foot around in the forthcoming transfer window in the belief that the league is won.
Recent performances, never mind last seasons' collapse should remind us all that the it's never over 'til the fat lady sings.....

Just caught up with recent posts, very depressing,
Just trying to get to grips with new computer. Why are older ones easier to use?
I've previously made my position clear, as a republican supporter/sympathiser whatever you want to call it.
How can I, as republican sympathiser? Not Be repulsed at our away support. Hardly anyone over 18 (legal) being pished out of their tiny minds at every away game.
For any doubters, check Broadwood next week. It will be full of buckfast induced, cheap trackie & skip cap wearing AHoles. Who the hell gives them tickets?
As mentioned earlier, being a republican it depresses me to see total to**ers draqgging Celtic FC into this debate.
We are totally separate entities.
If I can see the difference etc. etc.

Have to agree with you. I used to love belting out TBOTOB. However, when I took an Aston Villa supporting colleague with a penchant for Celtic to Ron Yates testimonial at Anfield we were in a boozer in Liverpool packed with Celtic fans and teh craic was great. He looked at me funny when we were giving TBOTOB laldy and I tried to explain that this was a song about the original IRA not the PIRA and it dawned on me that, while it may be obvious to those of us with some little knowledge of the struggle for independence in Ireland, there was no difference to any outsider. Especially with regard to a football club
I honestly don't think I've sang it since:( May have sang about British soldiers going home though.

I assume from the above you do not attend any away games but would rather read (and agree with) McNee of a Sunday afternoon. Wash your mouth out with soap - The majority of tickets are given to the fans who go along week in week out to support our club in good times and in bad - who participate in their supporters clubs ballots or indeed Celtic's ballots those who attend most games get the tickets. Or are you referring to the prawn sandwich brigade who like it or not are entilted to a ticket for an away game. As a regular away game attender (I will keep my political views to myself!) How dare you call anyone an Ahole they are there every week supporting their club through thick and thin ask any player today or in the past 5 years which supporter they would rather have behind them they will always say the away support! in the words of a norwich director where are you? Can anyone remember Joe Cole at west ham? Think aiden mcgeady, a Box of tricks needing a good bowl of irish stew and six months on the weights!! Yes?

Some patience and encouragement required. The Mcgeady Knockers in the crowd , take a deep breath the next time you need to vent your frustration and applaud. You never know the next killer pass can be delightful.

Jackanapes,
As I explain on my ain wee blog (http://celticfcblog.blogspot.com) , the problem isn't Petrov, injured though he has been in recent weeks, but Lennon's inability to offer ANY attacking threat. That, combined with the negativity of Telfer, Balde and McManus, allows opposition teams to double-team our best players, such as Nakamura, McGeady and, yes, Petrov.
The bold Bulgarian is a guy I would gladly build a team round.
Emjay, if Bobo is our BEST defender, then God help us!
He was caught ball-watching for the goals against Dunfermline and Inverness, caused the free-kick that led to Aberdeen's goal, and his antics against Livingston rank among the worst examples of defending I have EVER seen at Celtic Park.
The man is a sheer liability, pure and simple. His red card in Seville, hand ball in Lyon, and even the punch he got away with when we were 1-0 down in the Scottish Cup Final against Dunfermline. Sell him now, please!
Lastly, about this tiresome "republicanism" debate, I'm a Gweedore Bhoy, but when it comes to Celtic, I don't care one ounce about people's republican sympathies.
Our club is now a broad "church", encompassing people of all faiths, races and political beliefs. It's the 21st century. Time to move on.
I hope no-one takes this as an insult; it is merely a heartfelt plea.

Totally off at a tangent, I know, but here's a quirky little fact about Celtic players who'd also played for Rangers. (From the scottishleague.net site, under the heading Charlie Tully):
" Some time ago we were asked if Celtic's Charlie Tully had ever played for Rangers. We replied that according to Celtic's official website that he had but that he had never played for Rangers in a first-class game. We still believe that to be the case. But a possible explanation for this, on the surface, highly unusual 'transfer' has been sent in by Trevor Larkin who explains thus:
" He may be referring to the occasion of Caledonian FC's floodlighting inauguration, when a Rangers/Celtic Select played at Telford Street Park, Inverness, on March 11th 1959.
SFA regulations of the time required all competing players to be signed to a single member club, so the five Celts selected for the occasion signed for Rangers and re-joined Celtic the following day. (One may ponder 'what if...'had Rangers refused to cancel the contracts thereafter!) Officially speaking, it was a Caley-Rangers friendly, albeit with a radically altered visitors lineup!
The Rangers/Celtic XI, who played in a Rangers strip of white shirts with blue/red hoops and white shorts, was as follows: Beattie (Celtic); King (Rangers), Kennedy (Celtic); Crerand (Celtic), Paterson, Millar (both Rangers); Tully (Celtic), Baird (Rangers), Conway (Celtic), Queen, Hubbard (both Rangers).
Scot Symon managed the side, which beat Caley 4-2 (scorers Sammy Baird 3, Jim Conway; Caley scorers Rodwill Clyne and Jimmy Ingram) in front of an estimated 6,000 spectators.
Hopefully the above information may be of some use."
Which it most certainly is. Our thanks to Trevor for this info. "

The last away game I missed/didn't get a ticket for, was Seville, nevertheless had a great time.
If you had read one of my earlier posts (I know it's hard). But, I accentuated the exact same scenario at the Falkirk (away) game were I thought surely, with a limited allocation the 'skip' cap wearing, bogging trackie 'hinging' pissed mob wouldn't get tickets, surely. But they did. They always seem too.
My main concern is who gives them these tickets! In a crowd of 1,800 surely Celtic and 'Mr Plod' can rid us of these AHoles (I'm sick listening/watching these excuses for Human Beings.
As was mentioned, a lot earlier in this blog, I'm concerned about how others see us but, Minx if you're quite happy ???????

spikeysAuldMan 11.33pm - think you should cut NL some slack, it's probably due to the effects of sleep deprivation, remember he's got a crying baby ringing in his ears every night. The joys the joys!
Jackanapes - does your moniker mean 'monkey business' and do you know if they had any snow in tinsel town over the festivities? Best to ask Kojo I suppose.;o) You're right about Stan though, he has been off the boil over recent weeks. Driving me bananas in fact.
If he's playing whilst carrying an injury he need look no further than Magic to see where these heroics lead. Or maybe not so Magic - now you see him, now you don't. Maybe he'll reappear as a rabbit.
Can't remember if Nostradamus Romanov prophesied in his Christmas message of doom and damnation whether the world would end before the game or not but, if it doesn't, 1-3 it is.
PS
"The prawn sandwich eating brigade." Did RK copyright this phrase - don't remember reading it in reference to Celtic until he signed for us. Can't remember ever seeing a prawn sandwich at Celtic Park, suppose they'd deep fry them if they did. :o)

Calton: last on the subject promise ... While I understand there may be an element of our support who do tend to enjoy partaking in the tonic wine before entering a game, it is just that an element.
I for one do not, I assume from your writings you do not, I am sure Paul67 does not (could be wrong there though:)).
Your sweeping statment would lead us to believe all 1800 at Falkirk behaved in this manner. I for one did not nor did I see 1799 others behave in the manner you describe.
Sunday will see alot of alchohol induced supporters but would think that will be more down to the date than the moronic element. It is up to strathclydes finest (?) To refuse/eject these people from the stadium.
In answer to your question Yes I am happy, I am a Celtic Fan! Who is hoping to see our beloved team go 7 points clear on Sunday with BBJ scoring a hatrick!
Will look out for you on Sunday I am the one without the skip cap:)

A couple of thoughts:
I wonder what result fans of Dignity FC hope for in our game at Tynecastle. Do they see 2nd place as a more important and realistic goal?
I am a big Petrov fan, but he does always seem to have runs of good and runs of ordinary performances. If he gets a goal in a game, he's almost a dead cert to score in the next couple of games.
Finally Mr Sutton. One of my all time favourites, but I'm sorry to have to ask just what the hell is going on here? He would have been very valuable tomorrow, at the very least on the bench, for what I'm sure will be a physical encounter. Yet again though, we have the scenario where he was 50-50 to be fit X number of games ago, but Y weeks later is still injured. His entire Celtic career has been blighted in this way, but this season has been a joke. Enough is enough.
Any word on Beattie (that must be longer than the originally forecast 6 weeks) and Zurawski?
-
Perhaps the reason there are more of the 'skip cap wearing' 'brown wine drinking' brigade accessing tickets for away games is because they are the ones who want to go to these games and enjoy 'the day out'. A huge chunk of the silent family fans / consumers at 'New Celtic' home games probably do not wish to experience the 'away' trip and all that it entails.....the exception being games of high interst such as Ibrox, and Cup Finals, where a more mainstream group would wish to attend.
IMO the away 'experience' is often more akin to one which I recall following Celtic home and away in the seventies and eighties. Mostly it was a great 'bonding' experience but you never knew who might be p....g on your leg.
The demographic breakdown of the demand for away tickets versus home season book holders would be interesting. I am sure it would be massively skewed toward young, male etc which might explain why more are in attendance.

On good authority Beattie is hoping to be considered for the Clyde game, he has already been training .
Conflicting stories on Zurawski though.

Does anyone have the list of Celtic players who have scored over 100 goals for the club? I'm interested to see if Big John has moved from 28th position.
Everyone have a Guid New Year and "lang may you're lum reek"

burnley78- think you have hit the nail on the head with regards to the away support.
I rememember well the away games of the late 80's early 90's they were great days out, not so now the buses are quieter with fewer on them. But it was more affordable back then as well!
Blimey I sound like my da!

Sorry, I gave the wrong email address,
its leitrimbhoy1970@msn.com
Your help is gratefully appreciated.
The Hertz supporters are selling them on ebay at the moment for £100 for 2 tickets, very tempted as my brother is home from the States. Don't think I could contain myself for 90 minutes though.

jackanapes 10.14pm
Of course no manager would allow a half fit player to take to the field, and yes of course that would defy logic.
In my opinion, Stan was clearly more than "Half fit" and whilst not being 100% fit, he more than likely declared himself available for selection.
Like you I have no idea of the circumstances around his selection, or indeed his level of fitness.
You go on to state as "Fact" that Stan is a very ordinary player who showed flashes of "World class ability".
Very ordinary players dont show world class ability.
Stan is better than "Ordinary" in my opinion, and remember jackanapes an opinion is all it is and not "Fact" as you claim.

Etims have a page on the 100 Club. It was last updated after the Hibs game so BBJ is one goal further on.
Hope this link works as I've never tried this before

The Daily Telegraph - Roddy Forsyth
Strachan makes robust call
Gordon Strachan will be hoping for a more physical approach from his celtic side to their vital clash with Hertz at Swinecastle tomorrow.
Itt follows remarks made by the Celtic manager in the aftermatch of their narrow Boxing Day defeat of Livingston. "I didn't mean that they should go around kicking people," he said. "I would like them to stand up to tackles better. Every team like to get into our faces but most aren't as skilful as Hertz when they have the ball."
Strachan indicated that he would make few changes, if any, to the team who beat Livingston. Hertz, meanwhile, have ruled out Roman Bednar because of a thigh injury while Saulius Mikoliunas has an ankle problem which has caused concern.
In the only fixture to be played anywhere in the UK on the first day of 2006, Graham Rix's players will be aiming to put themselves back into the frame for the Scottish title and a place in next year's Champions League. A win for Hertz would bring them back to within one point of the leaders, while defeat would leave them well off the pace.
Swinecastle has been the bedrock of Hertz' title challenge, having repeatedly hosted sell-out crowds who have seen the only team to remain undefeated at home - the only Scottish Premier League side able to make such a boast.
For John Hartson, Celtic's Welsh international forward, Swinecastle is virtually a taunt. "It's the only SPL ground at which I have never scored," he said. "The crowd are right on top of you and the noise is terrific, so I always enjoy it. But I'll like it even better if I get a goal."
Strachan found the ground more productive in his playing days. "I haven't been there for a competitive game for a long time bit I scored my first ever league goal there, so I have happy memories," he said.
Here's to more happy memories. I'll take 3-1 celtic BBJ (2) and Naka. Couldn't care less who scores for them.
All the best

Sorry to disagree with you but Telfer seldom makes the precise pass in numerous attempts and his farcical attempts to tackle tells me he is totally averidge. Maybe for once he got lucky with Nakasan last week ! He's not up to it WGS has to get us to full backs now!

So Paul, the secret is out, who is Mrs76 that Joe mentions ;-)
Early 2 o'clock kick-off for today's games..
HT Ranjurs 0-0 Dundee Utd

Uruk-Hai struggling at the death star. Left the pitch to some boos but sounds like indifference. I can never really remember the Idi Amin XI being a mid table non-entity, having supported Celtic through their 9 in a row. The early 80's are a faded memory perhaps the Orcs were guff then as well. It's a new thing for me which is all i'm trying to say, i wont say i am enjoying it, i'm not a sadist, am just an interested spectator.
-
joe grande,
Hasta luego mi amigo
feliz ano nuevo

Paul67,
Last thoughts on Petrov,
Thinking it over.....you guys are probably right, after all.
Petrov is playing badly, because he is nursing an injury~
Hmmmmm!
The penny has fallen.
Final irrefutable conclusion:Ergo!
Petrov is not only an ordinary player.....Petrov is insane!
And you can enrol the Manager, in the Insane Asylum, along with him~...
After all, Strachan is aiding and abetting the insanity~
-
jackanapes
OR.
Petrov refuses to hide even with an injury. If you think Petrov is an ordinary player i would question not only your mental state but your eyesight as well.

Jackanapes,
Petrov's form may have dipped recently but he is more than capable of bagging a brace tomorrow.
I seem to recall he likes scoring at Tynecastle.
Buffel has scored for them.
-
Petrov to to score the first goal ,9/1 with Ladbrokes.
Get in!
-
On the Petrov subject...No player is 100% consistant. Henke, Ronaldhino, Henri all have stinkers.
But these are great players, and said stinkers are in a low percentage. Stan should be achieving a greater level of consistancy in his performances by now.
Injury or no, he never maintains good form for more than a few matches and should be having more MoM awards at this stage of his career if his perceived status is correct.
-
2-0 hunz
-
Jackanapes, are you saying that Petrov is the only player ever to grace the pitch whilst not 100% fit?
This is a ludicrous assertion. Many players have declared themselves fit enough to play, taken injections etc. and some are better players at 80% than others can be at 100%.
If Petrov rested and came back completely free of injury I think it would be best for everyone concerned but he can be such an important player for Celtic that I don't think Strachan feels confident leaving him out.
-
Why is it that people are so nervy about the Hearts game? Even Rangers beat them in December. Even Rangers.
-
To the worldwide CQN community....Wherever you are...(must be Singaporecelt first and SanFrantic last eh....?)
A Very Happy New Year...
Hope you all have Health, Happiness and many reasons to be cheerful about the bhoys...Paul 67 once again thankyou for this site..One of the Finds of 2005 for me. Your hard work is greatly appreciated by this exile..and many others.
Everyone enjoy the festivities and have nae worries about Tyncastle...I sense we will be a class apart.....
SanFran..Hope you, your family and yer dugs are safe and dry....
-
I might be wrong, but I can't remember Bobo having a bad game when it comes to big SPL matches. Can't recall any glaring errors against Rangers. Come tomorrow, I'm certain we'll see a good performace from Bobo and the rest of the defence - if Hearts get that close to our goal.
Incidentally, Paul, 'Hartson 1-0' is 22/1 with Laddy's. Worth a fiver punt.
-
Jackanapes - away and wind up another site. Insanity indeed, are you saying WGS is insane to pick Petrov??????????????????.
-
BennyBhoy Thanks for that snippet, that's one I hadn't heard before.
BryceCurdy Strange as it sounds, I think a lot of Rangers fans will be overcoming shudders of distaste and hoping for a Celtic win tomorrow, it looks like 2nd place is our best hope this season so better a Celtic than a Hearts win.
-
jackanapes, Do you actually go to watch Celtic or are your observations from an armchair?
-
Many thanks from all the ‘67’s Big Joe, though I now have Mrs67 asking who Mrs76 is.
The very best to you and MrsBigJoe.
PJBhoybyc, you are very welcome. Best wishes when 2006 reaches you.
Kos07, I learned a long time ago not to play the bookies.
