    Paul,
I hope your wee man enjoys his first Celtic game. My daughter was overwhelmed by her first tic game. More noise and swearing that she had heard in her whole life. Didn't have the heart to tell her it was a reserve game....::)

As for the Bhoys today.....I hope there is no more screwing around and falling behind. I don't need the stress. 3-0 at half time, please....

Many thanks to all CQN bloggers and very best wishes for the New Year.

To keep you on the ball in the holiday season, I have devised a little quiz for you. As I live outside the UK I was unable to subscribe for the recent share issue, so I am offering the winner of the quiz FIFTY POUNDS to be spent in the Celtic Shop.

If Paul will be so good as to let me have the address of the winner, I will forward a cheque.
The winner is the Celtic supporter who submits the first completely correct answers on the site IN THE NEW YEAR. (So no submissions before midnight on New Year’s Eve.)

Just give me the full names (forename and surname) of the following team of former Celts, playing in a 4-4-2 formation, though the clues relate mainly to the surname only.

    GOALKEEPER
Think of a pop star; think of tennis stars.

    RIGHT BACK
    A Cornish dancer.

    LEFT BACK
    One of the Seychelles islands.

    CENTRAL DEFENDER
His namesake just couldn’t stand the Reds (and I don’t mean Liverpool).

    CENTRAL DEFENDER
    Shoes in the Irish tongue.

    MIDFIELDER
A regal English forename. Shares his surname with a famous Irishman born in Scotland.

    MIDFIELDER
    Fiery, like a bard.

    MIDFIELDER
His brother wasn’t bad either. Wasn’t he the PM?

    MIDFIELDER
    Way down south in Gaeldom.

    STRIKER
Shares his surname with English poet Thomas, but is more alliterative.

    STRIKER
An Irish dog of a striker. But wasn’t he Scottish?

Listening to the pre-match buildup here on Clyde (yes, I know...), but have forgotten what a lot of rubbish these guys talk.

No team news yet...just speculation on various Hibs players (Thomson, Brown and Caldwell) going to either us or Rangers.

    Cheers

Roddy McKenzie playing well in goal.

    HT 1-0

Not a great performance by the bhoys. Settled a bit afer the penalty and played some better football but overall we need to improve. We created a good number of chances but with Maloney playing up front we are not going to score a lot of goals - he is not a finisher.

Stan looks a bit fitter this week. Naka is streets ahead of everyone else on the pitch. Telfer and Wallace are not giving us much.

The danger is that Lambert sends his team out with more confidence this half and they will have a go at us. Hopefully a quick goal will kill them off.

3 points is all important today - anything else will not do.

FT 2-1. Good 3 points but a bad show. We should not be struggling at home against sides like Livingston. Pass marks to Boruc, McManus, Lennon, Maloney, NAKA and BBJ. The rest were mince today.

The defence badly needs a shake up in January. Petrov needs a rest and we need to get Magic fit and on form.

Anyway, a good cushion going into the game next weekend and another two points gained on Rangers. Life aint that bad ...

    Cheers lhads.

If I had any sense (which I don't) I would wait before posting, so some spontaneous thoughts.
Nakamura - this guy is so impressive and always seems to find the time to do the right thing
Maloney - not the best finisher, but offers so many alternatives. Very good and certain to get better
Aiden - maybe not his best game, but there were plenty of others who should have been pulled off before him
BBJ - he takes stick from opponents and the fans, but he just gets on with his job. He does lead the line well and can link up with his team mates
Bobo - I've been a supporter of WGS since day 1, but I'll lose a lot of respect for him if Balde is allowed to keep his place. In footballing terms he is good at nothing. Sure, he can win the ball in the air, but even he hasn't a clue where it's going to end up!
On the ground I'm still better at 63.
Petrov - must be rested. He is only of value to the team when he is fit and in form - which he ain't at the moment.
McGlinchey - pity he missed a good chance, but I thought he impressed with good movement and willingness to make himself available. Think he'll do well
Virgo - still haven't seen enough, but his first touch and distribution better than anything our current back line can offer.
While we are waiting for Magic and Craig Beattie to come back does anyone else agree it could be better with Maloney wide left and Aiden beside/just behind BBJ?
Wee Shaun likes space to run and Aiden's skills are perfect in tight situations - so why not change places?
Du Wei - where are you? WGS seems to think you are a player. JohnH, who knows his stuff, agrees. Time to step up to the plate, big man.
May I be spared from seeing Balde in a Celtic shirt ever again.
Being a cult hero usually means you're crap but have charisma, I didn't need you to provide proof.

Although WGS has a reputation as a hands on Coach, more than MO'N, we certainly always fought to the last knockings with Martin and won many points in the last quarter.

I think this shows that these guys are their own men and although comparisons are inevitable, they are often not fair.

What I did take from today’s game, was the substitutions and tactics made more than a contribution than the fitness and taht meant an extra two points (in marked contrast to ICT), something WGS hasn’t always excelled at.

What was that!?!? Terrible performance by a team who should be able to steamroller Livingston.

There were a few players who had bad games or nothing came off for them namely McGeady and Wallace (who from the 1st minute was having a howler) but that can be expected...

What I can't accept is what we got from Petrov - which wasn't much!

I don't know if he's injured, fatigued, off form or he's lost heart but all he did all day was stand in the middle of the park. If he's not up for it why is he on the park? It's like playing with a man down! He certainly doesn't look like a man who's playing for a new contract.

Kojo - if he thinks he can play like that week in week out I couldn't care less if he signs or not! I accept he may be injured but if he is he owes it to us and to himself to admit to the manager he isn't fit enough to play.

It's time more players showed the spirit McGlinchey did when he came on.

Thanks (unless you were agreeing that I don't have any sense)
I know I played at a much lower level and, therefore, under less pressure, but Nakamura is something else.
He is not going to give the ball away.
He is very quick when he sees a pass on.
Otherwise he'll wait all day and take a hit while waiting until someone moves into a good position.
Am still convinced his style of play is also very encouraging for Shaun and Aiden. Even in the SPL skill conquers all.
Still not very sure how many points we'll be in front when we win the league this season.
    Current guess 15 - 19.

Sorry to sound like Scrooge, but today was abysmal. To lose against Dunfermline and then scrape a winner against Livi in the final couple of minutes is unacceptable. We're going backwards and January cannot come too soon.

I won't even start on Balde, a £28k per week nightmare, who will likely be an albatross around our necks for the next 4 years.

What was Petrov's excuse today? Thigh? Ankle? Poor week at the negotiating table?? The guy's been anonymous for the past 3 or 4 games.

Maloney is never a penalty box striker and was downright wasteful in the first half. And please don't start with the "he's only young, give him a chance" line. He's almost 23 and if he can't do it now he never will.

Then we had Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee on the left, who couldn't string a pass together.

Telfer's distribution was once again shocking.

Sorry to be so negative folks, but apart from the 3 points and Naka, there were very few positives to be taken out of that game.

To some, 3 points is all that should matter, but if we play the way we have been playing of late, Hearts will murder us.

I don't think Maloney sets out to be a penalty box striker, injuries mean he cannot be played in midfield were he belongs... saying that he was still one of our better players today. He may have missed quite a few chances but he made them himself in general - his workrate is unquestionable. Agree with whoever said switch McGeady and Maloney.

Forgot to mention Bobo in my last post; maybe the less I say the better! When will he learn that he should not try to do anything in the ball... a scary player when he has time on the ball.

Glad to see Virgo looking a lot more confident and playing better. We didn't get to see him for long but he looked a lot more comfortable - a no nonsense defender.

Cannot wait for the African Nations Cup to start!

Telfer is the only player at the back who gets (average) pass marks today.

Must disagree about Maloney, thought his contribution was immense and he could consider himself very unlucky on occasion. Yes he missed some chances but the one that stands out was the left footed first time shot that the keeper made one of numerous fine saves with.

Take time to watch the match again and observe his movement off the ball after he has laid the ball off, a few times if other players had been on his wavelength he was through on goal.

Sorry but nothing to defend bobo with though..........

Malone19, agreed, Maloney is being played out of position (which he only started palying this season).

Hopefully, one of our recognised strikers will be fit for next week and Shuan can go back to left wing.

On that note, does anyone have the scoop on Sutty? Listening to WGS post match interview, I got the impression he's chucked it. Hopefully I'm dead wrong.

I didn't see the game today but I've noticed alright that Petrov has not been in good form for some time. Perhaps he is in need of a rest but I'm sure the main reason for his sub-standard performances is the on-going cotract negotiations. I recall the King himself having a drop in form when his big deal was being put together.

Do you work for a tabloid?. There are an awful lot of cliché’s in your post (8:26).

I have not seen the game yet, but have listened to it. I think you are being a little harsh.

Celtic have no divine right to win every game. Our team are in a transitional phase. Please give them a break.

Back in August, very few of us expected the team to acheive anything year. It was obvious that changes were needed and that team was too old. We needed a younger, fitter and hungrier Celtic.

Fortunately, during this transitional season, we are top of the league because we have played a little better than expected and most of the other teams are poorer than us.

Take a chill pill my friend.. We won today. It could be worse. You could be a Rangers fan.

    malone 19,

    couldn't agree more about petrov.

i was getting angrier by the minute watching him pass to the livi players and not being able to run the length of himself.

he was doing us no good claiming he was fit when he clearly wasn't and also Gordy and his physio should have noticed it.

we have pearson, thompson and lawson who could have filled in today but no, we played a player who couldn't run!

Hence us being overun in midfield today.

Have to disagree with the maloney doubters (GM).

i thought he worked his wee socks off once again and was unlucky not score.

his contribution alongside naka's was one of the reason's we came away with the points today.

i wasn't pleased with sections of the crowd. very impatient from the start.

did they all want to get the game won so they could get to the pub?

Yes wallace was having a bad game from the start but they were on his back far too quickly.

his game went from bad to worse after the abuse.

ditto for mcgeady. although i thought mcgeady played better than petrov.

Keano will walk in to this team.

    Either the midfield or defence.

He will also protect naka from the consistently late tackles in which our esteemed referees are failing to notice.

Lennon, if i see you once more hold your arms up in the air when a pass is not right rather than get the ball and then complain i will.....well let's just say i'll not be pleased!

Bobo your running out of lives big man!!

Anyway well done to naka. you deserved that winner for all those late tackles from a very physical livi team.

A big improvement needed for next week.

    The team today were dire!

Telfer's distribution from the final ball was abysmal.
Wallace at left back is totally unacceptable.
So far tonight not a mention of how bad Mcmanus was.
He won nothing in the air and his indecision at times was frightening.

BHOYS we need defenders as a priority.

Sutton...we have talked on here about who we think will or should be moved on.
Well the time has come for this player to go.Over the past two seasons he has had long injury spells and i'm afraid in terms of appearances per season, he does not offer value for money and considering the size of his wage packet he is now a liability in my book.
Great player in the past but, now too susceptible to injury and has got to make way for someone who will give us a better return.

Doesn't seem to be any comment about the absolutely blatant penalty we never had when Shaun was upended with the score at 0-0.
It was a stonewaller and an outrageous decision from Mr Underhand to wave play on.
Some guys around me suggested he was playing the advantage rule, but what could be more advantageous than the award of a penalty kick.
If it wasn't for the brilliance of Naka then I'm sure it would be a big talking point.
No matter the score, it was a scandalous decision and I look forward to seeing Mr Underhand's comments on the referees whistleblower site.

Another thing that hasn't been brought up - watching on Setanta last week the "commentators" were sentencing McManus to death saying he should have been sent off for his 'last man' tackle... Was Celtic's penalty not a blatant goal scoring oppertunity? I don't agree with the rule but Maloney was about to pull the trigger!

I also thought it was a penalty in the first couple of minutes but will need to have a look at the replay.

Did anyone else notice the ref wave play on and give the diving sign when Walker (I think) went down just outside our box? I would have thought when the ref thinks someone dives he'd book them?!

AND... I'm really getting, let's just say annoyed, with fourth officials giving Strachan a talking to. The man is not being allowed to do his job. Every time he goes to the edge of his box the fourth official is over telling him to be quiet and move back. It's ridiculus!

    Anyway, rant over!

That result is the type of result that wins the league, not 4-0 or 5-0 gubbings.

Yes Stan was posted missing today as well.

Possibly in his defence he was criminally assaulted by the Livie Number 13 in the first minutewhich may have put him right off.

However when players are injured or are not playing well it's time for change and WGS and his coaching staff got it wrong, by keeping him on if he was under the weather in any way.

They also got it wrong by waiting so long to move to 3 at the back, because Livie wer posing no threat up front and we should have comitted another player forward earlier than we did.

  • At 26/12/05 21:46, Blogger WGS said…

Time for WGS to bite the bullet and change the complete back four.

    OUT: McManus ,Telfer, Balde, Wallace

    In: RB: Virgo
    CB: Sutton
    CB: Du Wei
    LB: Mulgrew or O'Dea

or maybe consider going to a back three with:

    Sutton
    Du Wei
    Keane.

Introduce Agathe as right wingback with Wallace on the left wingback. Position may suit Wallace better.

Something has got to be done else WGS will end up the way Tommy Burns did in that no he had no dependable defenders.

    Simplyabhoy,

I don't McManus is the answer. loses to may first balls and is indecisive sometimes. Being put in at left back will make him even more vulnerable.

Any tricky winger will skin him just like Paul Dalglish done a few times today at that was when he was playing centre half. Bewteen him and wallace they get caught out to many times.

One instance in the second half today was scary when he McManus abandoned his position at centre half to and win a ball which wallace was going for as well. Upshot being it caused a collision and the Livi player got in behind down the left and a centre half down in the penalty area.

I feel sorry Wallace as LB is not his position.

Things will undoubtedly improve when Beattie,Magic and all else are fit.

Roy Keane will also help raise the stakes when cleared to play.

On a positive note, lucky or not, results in recent performances will go a long way to us capturing the league flag.

An Inverness reprise....last week was doom and gloom about our performance up there.

We came away with a point.

One of our challengers went up today and got gubbed 2-0.

When do the Hearts and Rangers visit them?

More points will be dropped up there by a lot off teams.

Cava is really good for the temperature they say !

Could have done with some at Parkhead today.

I think the electricians did a great job sorting the power problem, but they might have turned up the heating while there!

    It was BALTIC

I think we can all agree that we haven't been playing well over recent weeks. However, it is inevitable that during the course of a season the team suffers a dip in form. The important thing is that when we do lose form we still continue to win and we did that today in so doing we maintained the gap over Hearts and increased the lead over Rangers. For me that is a good day. I am not dismissing the defensive frailties or the worrying loss of form of Stilian however I am delighted that we are top of the League going into the New Year. We are seeing a team in transformation and again today we saw the introduction of another young Celt. For my money Artur Boruc, Neil Lennon (as always), Shunsuke Nakamura, Shaun Maloney and John Hartson all got pass marks marks today. The others must all improve next week at Tynecastle. However, I remain optimistic. I also have to say that I was completely scunnered by the attitude of some of the so-called fans around me in the South Stand. They get on the players (including the young guys)backs from the off and I never ever hear a word of encouragement. Anyway top of the League going in to 2006 who would have thought that after Bratislava, Motherwell and Ibrox. Well done the Celts!

Next week at Tynecastle Stan and the others currently out off form will have to peak, or our lead wil go backward.

Our recent lack of form especially in midfield could result in us being overrun through the middle.

However, i am confident WGS will lay out a plan off action which will see at least one point coming west again.

Hi guys. Hope Santa was good to you all.
Well, three points, but what a struggle it was!! Our defence is MINCE, and alot of work required on the training pitch this week needed to rectify these failings.
I wrote last week that Telfer is another Tom Boyd when it comes to his distribution. It is, quite frankly, shocking. There has to be better in the reserves than this guy. I am not doubting his fitness and commitment, and I would never boo him, but I feel he has been given enough time too improve and it has not happened. He was by no means alone today, but can anyone tell me that when he has passed the ball more than ten yards, that it has not resulted in him giving away possesion? And this happens even when he has time to pick out a team-mate. Telfer seems to be indicative of the malaise which has been prevalent over the last few weeks, IMO.
A serious test awaits us next week at Swinecastle, but this defence, on their recent performances at least, do not seem to be up to the task ahead.
I hope that I am wrong.
