Personally i think it would be more of a risk NOT to make changes to that defence before going to Tynecastle next week, at the very least Camara should come back into the side in place of Wallace - who has shown already in only 3 games that he's not and never will be a natural defensive player, the first-team is no place to be learning your trade either.
Enough people have had their say on Bobo, the CP boo bhoys had stronger than their say at the game yesterday :( , so i don't feel the need to compound the big man's misery by putting the boot in when he's down. I still think that when he's at his best he's our most effective natural defender, and with a Roy Keane beside him keeping him on his toes that he still has a lot to offer Celtic. McManus has been decent enough since he's been in the team, but i don't think he'll ever be good enough in the long-term, and i think he should be replaced.
Celtic have been lacklustre since the 3-2 win against Hibs, 3 weeks ago now, it's time for Strachan to shake things up again.

not sure if posting the link causes any problems mr67 I'll take it off and put it elswhere if it does- you can let me know

I've suggested several times before that Nakamura has more to offer than 2 touch, safe passing. Occassionally, he opens the play up with a superb pass.....but yesterday he did what I think he is really capable of....
Winning the game. Turn. Beat a man. Shoot. The sight of him going at people at the edge of the box should fill defenders with dread. Long may it continue.

Why have not been at least bleeding our Bobo replacement. We have had games at home against the teams at the bottom of the league and not taken the oppertunity to get our central defence sorted out.
Funnily enough I am just watching the channel 67 replay of the Livvy game and the Bobo moment is on right now.
I like the big man but maybe he is dreaming of Afircan Nations cup glory rather than concentrating on the Hoops.
Still waiting to see Du Wei get a chance... maybe next week at some stage.

Paul67 - Tried to post earlier on. I hope the lack of posts did not make you think we did not love you anymore!
Ten days ago, I said I wanted a Hearts victory at Dignity's ground as I did not want you know who to get any momentum. To all those who disagreed with me - I stand corrected. Tynecastle will be a toughie and we are miles from being a good side.
Darryl Broadbum writes
"The magnificent juggernaut that is Rangers continues to sweep all before them. As lucky league leaders (LLL) Celtic stutter to beat mediocre teams, the recent Rangers resurgence (RRR) gathers pace. During the past two away league games their fantastic defence has conceeded a miserly 5 goals and they have raced up the SPL table from 5th place to er ..... 5th place"

nice to see yesterday with the game finely balanced at 1-1 and us pushing to win all three points, the crowd thought the best course of action was to err leave.....
I wouldn't post any links to Naka's goal, if you didn't stay long enough to see it then your bad.
faithfull through and through well for 80 mins its seems these days..

Turn of the Year Report cards...
Boruc 8: Great signing. Confident, strong, agile.
Telfer 5: Doesn't offer as much as Agathe.
Camara 5: Abysmal start, then looked better, then dropped. Mysterious.
Wallace 4: Not a defender.
Bobo 5: And now the end is near... One mistake too many. Keano will go through him like a dose of salts.
McManus 6: Promising, though still a wee bit error-prone. Overall though, a success.
Lennon 7: Looks fitter. Good solid first half of season.
Petrov 7: Enigmatic in the extreme, occasionally brilliant, occasionally anonymous. Still, re-signing him should be priority.
McGeady 6: Has rescued his career from the khazi- still to be seen if he is half the player he thinks he is.
Maloney 8: Best young player in Scotland by a country mile- has vision, energy, heart, and brain.
Nakamura 8: Either he or Shaun have been our best players this season.
Thommo 2: Now, sadly, a completely rubbish player.
Hartson 7: Natural striker, but also natural fatso. Goal ratio out of all proportion to his effort.
Zurawski 4: Injured, unfair perhaps to judge. Shown flashes of skill.
Beattie 6: Huge promise, unlucky with injuries.
Sutton 5: Possibly at the end of a great Celtic career- no longer looks interested.

Hi all
I had my rant about the game on the previous thread, what I did not mention was the worst piece of refereeing I have seen involving Shaun Maloney, when Underhill refused to give a penalty in the first couple of minutes, this has to be seen to be believed. The Livi player must have slid in 5 yards away from Shaun and went right through the back of him,the marks on the turf tell the story and it happened right in front of me, somehow he did not think this a foul.I am totally at a loss to understand this decision, and GS should be saying this in no uncertain terms to the support and the authorities
-
Unlike some other posters I applaud Strachan's decision to field Mc Glinchey yesterday.
I was stuck unfortunately with only the radio commentary but as I listened in growing frustration I like no doubt many others began to scan the list of substitutes. I was wondering who on the bench was capable of doing something to change the game and bemoaning the absence of Beattie Zurawski and the mysterious absence of Sutton. I could only pick one name so the substitution didn't surprise me having watched Mc Glinchey's display for the reserves last week, as did Gordon Strachan. The young boys must be delighted to have a manager prepared to gamble on their talent
-
Bobo is a likeable fellow who gives his all, but has this affliction of thinking he has the talent to dribble the ball out of defence.I said a year ago his time was up after one of these mistakes.
He really must go, please.
-
dessybhoy I sit 20 yards away from both penalty incidents.
without the benifit of seeing them again yet the first one could have been nothing else appalling descision. The second one that was given didn't look a cert although it was a more difficult one with the pace of the play.
These officials are amateur and should not be allowed to make decisions that so appallingly effect the work the highly trained and paid proffesionals of my company do.
My business and it's future should not be in these fools hands

Very interesting pic of Maloney's penalty. Only Naka and Telfer have bothered to make an attempt at following it in. Hartson cant even be bothered to watch it properly and Stan and McGeady may as well be in the stands watching with the rest of us!
That is really un-professional.

Balde is an annoying big fella. He is not worth £28K for SPL footie as we allknow but on his game he is still the best centre half in Scotland. He also gives us presence which is sadly lacking in midfield and attack since Sutton's edge was lost.
However for 28K though we should be able to go out and get two defenders to replace him the trouble is it is not that easy.
Just look at the four bums at Matchbrox.
Virgo - whats the story? Any chance of recouping 50% for this man in the January sales?
Paul67 I may have a different opinion of Balde from you but Naka is different what a rising star we have indeed.
-
bobo makes mistakes - agreed.
what about his last ditch tackles -the likes of which no other celtic defender is capable.
what about his over-all game. every aspect inc heading tackling, i wouldnt like to see him replaced by anyone currently at the club.
we're in for a shock when bobo goes to the an cup, perhaps unless rk goes into the middle.
i'm more concerned at the players who sometimes have no contribution to make to a match, e.g. lennon, dont get me wrong - i like lennon -but there are some games when he is totally useless - he does nothing
given strachan's comments about dig, strength etc, I wouldn't be surprised to see a few new/old faces in the team v hearts.
-
kevtic are you from hamilton?
-
Balde was bad yesterday. But the truth is that he is still our best outfield defender in a pretty poor defence.
His problem like Paul says is one of concentration - but that's something that can be much more readily sorted than the problems of Telfer, Camara & Wallace - none of whom are natural defenders.
McManus has potential and at least his natural tendency is to defend, but he needs to improve a lot.
Balde cost us a goal yesterday, and has been poor in the previous couple of games as well - but over the season to date, our task would have been more difficult without him.
The full back situation amazes me. We have an outstanding full back in Agathe. His attitude might not be the best in training or in reserve games - but he was always notoriously poor in these areas in MON's time as well - yet it never stopped him performing to a high standard against Europe's finest time after time.
As for left back -it's the highest priority in the January sales. Both Camara & Wallace are converted wingers - and it shows big time. Charlie Mulgrew shows plenty promise, and I do think his day shall come, but it's still a tad early.
We'll win the league this year even if we played BBJ and Virgo as full backs - but it's next year in the CL where we're realyy going to get found out if we don't sort it out.
Festive Greetings to all - Big Eck was certainly doing a bit of (dignified?) festive greetin yesterday - very funny.
-
Although we have had issues with the defence for the whole season (with the possible exception of a few games where they seemed to gel). We have did little apart of the unfathomable exchange of Camara for Wallace. Why haven’t we given Agathe a run out surly he deserves a chance to prove himself and why can’t Virgo or Du Wei have a half against teams like Livingston.
We need less of This and more ofThat THE SOONER WE START THE BETTER
-
Maybe I'm a wee bit over optimistic but surely the game next week will be different. We will be playing a team that need to come out a bit; meaning we'll have more room in attacking areas. The players should be 'up' for this type of game and, no matter the result, we'll still be top of the league at the end of the game with Roy Keane available for the remainder of the campaign.
The future's bright, it's GREEN and WHITE
-
All. Having been disdvantaged by having to work yesterday I've been minus the benefit of any audio/visual knowledge of actually went went on with the great Bobo Boo-boo. However,it does sound as though Bobo has had (yet) another "bombscare" moment.
Reading on here and on other boards I get the feeling that there is a groundswell of public floggin coming for Dianbobo.
So before, the stocks are prepared let me just say a couple of "good" things in his "defence" (not often that we see those two words in the same sentence these days is it now?)
1. Every player has form dips. Sure drop the guy and see how he takes the message (hopefully it gets thru). If he's committed he'll come back stronger, wiser and more attentive.
2. Sure he gets 25+k a week. Hats off to him/his agent for astute business. Would you turn it down if your work said that they were going to double your money next week because your Contract was due expiration soon? In short, the money should not be a measure of the man.
There's an old Chinese proverb that says "Everybody gives a push to a tumbling wall" and I think there's a modicum of truth in this instance. Sounds like Bobo's going to carry the can for his own and the general defensive frailities.
Hell, I liked/like the Big Guy and hope that he gets the message. This time. After all to err is human to forgive (but only once in my book) is divine.
-
Got to agree with some of the comments regarding the absolute shocking decision not to award a penalty for the tackle on Shaun Maloney. I sit area 112 row G, just in front of where u sit Dessybhoy, its proberly the most stonewall penalty as u will ever see, the livy player came clattering in to Maloney from behind and took him out. How the ref didnt give it defys beleif. As for Bobo his time must surly be up, does he honestly think he is Franz Beckenbauer, what was he thinking trying to take two livi players on at his own box, he really is a walking time bomb when he puts on the hoops. I feel if celtic get rid of Bobo (£28k), Thompson (20k) and sutton (30k) (estimates for the wages) that is almost £70k a week we r saving on wages, that money could be used to fund a new defence which we r so clearly needing. Nothing personel against wallace, but he is just not ready to play left back just now, maybe a good few games for the reserves in that position and he might develop the correct skills to play there but as for now i would go with camara. Telfer is argubly the worst crosser of the ball i have seen and his distribution in genral is pretty poor. I think strachen should give Agathe a chance at right back. McManus Needs to win more balls in the air, he gets beat far to often for a centre half, he does have potential tho. I feel our defence is our week link in our side, especially if we wanna play open attacking football we need to make sure we are solid at the back. Just now we are not solid enough.
Heres hoping strachen signs both a right back and left back in january as we truly need better players in these positions and starts to give both Du wei and Virgo a chance soon.
-
Codi36 - Hamilton? Nope wrong side of Lanarkshire! More North-side.
I agree for £28K the errors should be few and fair between but I also think with full backs like Telfer and Wallace (not natural defenders) there is a huge pressure on Balde, McManus and Lennon to keep our defence together in any game.
It is frightening to think what a good strong physical side would do to this brittle Celtic side. Maybe Sutton in defence and Magic back would give us some much needed edge. Oh yes and Keano in midfield!

Can anyone provide details of the new song about Shunske yesterday? It was difficult to make out the words over our tannoy as my ears are as aged as the rest of me. Can you point me in the right direction? I'm not talking about "II think I'm turning Japanese" which they played after the game.

Evening all,
Hope the power cut and Bobo's howler didn't put a dampener on everyone's festive spirit. Paul67 -Agree 100% on Bobo and Naka.
Bobo has cost us a barrowload of goals this season. The Dunfermline goal at Parkhead saw him ballwatching and allowing Greig Ross to steal in front of him. At Pittodrie he lost possession far up the park forcing Lennon to bring down the attacker for the free kick which led to their goal. Caley thistle and he was sleeping again. Yesterday's error is just one more in a season full of them.
Having said that, we don't have anyone else to step into that role and his place at Tynecastle is pretty much assured. This problem must be looked at in January.
McManus looked poor as well although I'm reluctant to criticise him too much as he should be learning from his more experienced defenders right now, not pinning a weak defence together. His nerves were clear to see yesterday; he looked very uncomfortable on the ball.
As for Naka, he won the game single handedly yesterday. He was the only player capable of finding a pass out of a tight spot. He rarely lost possession in a midfield which gave the ball away far too much. His goal was superb and exactly the kind of magic that was required to win what was a really tight game, especially in the 2nd half.
On the crowd, I'm always annoyed by those who arrive bang on kick off and leave 10 minutes early. No amount of time saved on the journey home would have made me want to miss Naka's goal. For these people to support a team which is famed for scoring late dramatic winners does seem a bit strange.
The atmosphere was not too bad overall I thought. The moans and groans only came about after a succession of schoolboy errors in losing possession (Wallace and McGeady especially).
Anyway, I'm off to celebrate New Year in New York and I've been told Demsey's is a decent bar to watch the Hearts game in. Anyone been there? Got the Celtic tartan kilt looked out especially.
So Happy New Year to all fellow CQN-ers. And remember, it may be some time before we celebrate the dark side being in 5th place at New year so make the most of it!

Some positives from me from yesterday.
I was at the game and it started. Couldn't believe it, my only chance for the last 2 months and the next 2, and we got a power cut.
We won, playing not that well. I was beginning to wonder after ICT and Dunfermline if we fitted the old cliche, able to grind out a result while playing badly. Not exactly grinding, what Naka does, is it? But still, good to see we can win that way too.
The crowd almost turned on Balde (so did I to be honest) but after a wobbly bit the first time he got the ball after that incident they, if not exactly getting behind him, at least didn't get on his back, isolated pockets excepted.
The crowd was its usual nervous nasty self when things started to go wrong, but at least it remembered to be generous to McGlinchey when he came on. I was encouraged by the response to both his misses, and I think the fact that he went on to have a decent 20 minutes was a reward for the generosity.
(I've just read the start of Stan's book, and if anyone needs reminded of how important support and encouragement is when you're 18 / 19 and thing are going badly, I would recommend it. Actually, I find it's pretty important at my age as well, so I guess most of our players would respond well to it.)
We got confirmation, if it was needed, that the Rangers rollercoaster is heading inexorably downwards, (as opposed to our own ascent to new greatness).
If you are going to have a poor performance and a narrow win against a team you were hoping to trounce, what a way to do it. (Remember the 3-2 win against Livi?)
We didn't embarrass Lambo. I would hate it if all that money we spent on his coaching certificates were to go to waste.
John Hartson was the best player on the park in the first half. We'll have a real 90 minute player when he doesn't have to run around so much making up for other problems. Watch - as he has to come deeper, he becomes less able to be effective where he counts most.
The air conditioning in Turnstiles was working really well, unlike when I was last there in September.
I wasn't the guy in front of me at the ATM outside the ground. He put his card in, he keyed in his PIN and.... the power died. Where could he go? Hope you got it back safely, my friend.
Negatives? Our home support does not have the confidence in itself or the team to sing ourselves to victory. How do we solve this?
Bobo must go. He has done it too often, at too many levels, and clearly cannot learn.
It will be March before I get to another game.
John Hartson didn't make up any ground in the top goalscorer contest.
-
I thought we were decent in the 1st half and should have had more goals. Maloney’s non-penalty decision was an utter disgrace. Also, the quicker we get Maloney back to midfield the better. He's a great wee player but his goals to chances ratio is very poor. He'll never be a top class striker but he can create very well.
As for the other creator in our team, he is absolutely amazing. The creative midfield position can be the hardest to fill but the most enjoyable to watch - that's why having lived through the Larsson era, Lubo Moravcik is still my favourite Celtic player of all time. The biggest compliment I can pay Naka is that Lubo will have to start looking over his shoulder soon as his place as my all time No1 could be under threat!
As for the defence - it's looking shaky and one of WGS's biggest decisions of the season will be whether to change it before the Hearts game. Balde's clanger was so bad I'd be tempted to drop him but I'm not sure away to Tynecastle is the game to throw Virgo or Du Wei into. Over to you Gordon….
It's highly unlikely that both Petrov and Lennon will play so poorly at the same time again (especially with Keano as an option now) so I wouldn't panic too much.
As for the guy who was sitting a few rows behind me giving it "Strachan you're f*ckin useless, get tae f*ck ya pr*ck" for the whole of the 2nd half, I'd say this: We're still top of the league and attempting, and on some occasions succeeding, to play great passing football. We're definitely moving in the right direction, just not as quickly as we'd like at times but that's football. In fact that's life!
-
One other thing, I thought it was an excellent decision by WGS to put McGlinchey on. There is a lot that can be read into that decision and in my eyes it's all good.
-
spikeysAuldMan @ 4.40..I find myself strongly agreeing and strongly disagreeing with your post. As far as Bobo is concerned, I agree that there isn't anyone at the club who is currently any better in the position of centre half. When he is good he is very good, dominant in the air and strong in the challenge, an imposing figure. However he is prone to a rush of blood to the head and unfortunately sometimes it proves costly, as it did yesterday. I still want to see him at centre half at Tynecastle. On Neil lennon, I strongly disagree with your comment that sometimes he is "totally useless". He has been remarkably consistent in his 5 years at the club. His isn't a glamourous role, fetching and carrying, making himself available to receive passes from colleagues, closing down and generally competing in the middle of the park. He never hides and in my opinion we miss him when he isn't there.
Chairbhoy @ 5.11..I hope that you don't mean more of "that" because "that" was a young DJ scoring the winning goal in the 1970 League Cup Final!
-
Kevtic, you said something my mate kev said at the game yesterday. He claims to visit cqn but never posts. Thought i had him there.
Oh well, never mind.
Imo, the only bad thing about next weeks fixture list is that rankers can actually start the new year in 4rth with killie not playing until monday.
What a boost for them, i'm now worried this lift could potentially attract some more world class players on par with the one they've already signed.
Oh to be top of the league with KEANO on board. Hold on... WE HAVE.
Have a great new year everyone and remember... no matter how poorly we play, we will never be as bad as THEM!!!
-
Paul,
I ended up laughing yesterday afternoon at the Ref's decision not to award the penalty. I think in 50 years watching hunners and hunners of bad refereeing decisions (almost invariably against us) I think yesterday's was the very worst. How he couldn't award a penalty, I 'll never figure out. The actual award looked far more dubious to me.
As I have said oft and on since the last African Nations Cup, Bobo has to go.
Nakamura is a joy. He is THE archetypical Celtic player. He plays as we all fantasise doing in the hoops.
-
I see our good friend Graham Spiers has succumbed to the Chris Burke / Jinky comparison.
Well, Shunsuke's goal yesterday would have done credit to George Best.
Easy to make facile comparisons, isn't it? (Help, that may be tautology).
But this I know. I'd rather have had JJ in my team then. I'd rather have Shunsuke in my team now.
And if it comes to it I'd rather have Bobo than the Greek wrestler.
-
109 row A ( can't do stairs!!)
I had a better view than Sean.
yesterdays stats make for good dining
us
8 shots on target
13shots off target
18 fouls commited against us
them
2 shots on target
3 off target
4 fouls against them
the dumfermline game only had 3 more fouls in the whole game than wqere commited against celtic players on monday yet it had 5 yellow and two red cards. Our game had one yellow to vincze.
I am backing off they are amateur angle jumping back on the institution gig

My thoughts on yesterday would be the defense has lost its edge again. Ok balde did his usual and Paul67 hit the nail on the head about his concentration levels but i think Camara should be recalled into defense. While i like the idea of Wallace playing left-back he has a lot to learn about the defensive side of the position. Camara when he was in the side did defend better than wallace. He did a great job mopping up after balde and McManus when things went wrong. Even when Camara lost the ball he was straight back into his position without even stopping to think. A sign of listening to the coaching staff. Although Wallace has been good going forward in the left-back position I would use the horses-for-courses method , Each player playing the postion according to the tactics against the selected opposition.
I think WGS showed a rather big set of balls putting on McGlinchey when we where chasing a win. It really did impress me. Having watched the reserves I know he is an excellent prospect and its great to Know that if you warrant a place in the team you'll get it.
I thought McGeady had a good game yesterday. I hate the way some supporters get on his back. Before the (hard-to-please brigade) step-up to have a go have a look at the events leading to the first goal. McGeady cut inside to beat one player , a Diego maradona turn to beat another and slide in the pass which led to the penalty kick. Imagine for one second if Naka had done that.....yes you get te picture?
A final thing....
Robbie Keane for the New Year!
-
Gordon,
Apologies, don't know what an infamous goal was doing on a Celtic website, but there you are, still the point is that BMcN and JC wasn't making it easy for him, they didn't exactly give it away.
Not one to normally praise TFOD, but as it is the season of good will to all men! It was no bad for a sixteen year old - Didn't know Kenny Everett was that good.
The coat is well and truly on - GOOD EVENING!!
-
Defensively we did all right yesterday. Look at whitedog's statistics.
I don't remember a real threat until Bobo decide to even things up.
Biggest problem with Ross Wallace was his distribution. He couldn't have found a Celtic jersey in the superstore. Telfer was only marginally less bad.
Still, we do need a new defence, don't we?
-
dessybhoy, paulelliotisgod, parkheadcumsalford, sooooo glad you posted on the non penalty, I was raging for most of the game regarding that decision. Maloney stopped the ball and left it a good 2 yards away, he was about to return to it after leaving the defender for dead, said defender takes him out - at least 2 yards from the ball. No penalty !! No penalty!!
I am desperate to see this on tv tonight, just to make sure my mind wasn't playing tricks. Will we see repeated angles on this a la Steven pressley's dive at Tynecastle at the end of last season or the Rugby Park witch hunt on Stan a couple of year's ago? Doubt it, but I am definitely keeping this one in the bag for any future media induced furore on behalf of the diddy teams. I stress here that I dont think many modern ref decisions are based on bias, though probably a small percentage continue to be, incompetence seems more prevalent.
Also, glad to see some more people jumping on the McGlinchey bandwagon.

Introduce yourself to Des the club president at Demsey's when you are there. Nice location, nice Celtic Bar upstairs and Irish breakfast after the games. Yecannaewhackit.
If you are going to watch the ball drop in Times Square get there early as it's usually packed.
Happiness, health and a Treble in 2006.

On the boo boys, they now seem a permanent fixture. Seem to have crept in gradually and now represent a sizeable minority. Sad. They will call themselves uncompromising and only want what's best for the team. We all get frustrated but calling players all sorts of names is hardly going to turn around performance, individual or as a unit.
It is not the Celtic way, some of us are morphing into our neighbours stereotype.
Personally, I would change the whole defence, but I am not going to call players all sorts when they are trying to do a job. It really is detrimental to performance and result. Our manager continually points out what we all see as faults and I am putting my faith in HIM to address them.
-
Just finished watching the last 10 mins on CH67, Adam Virgo looks not half bad on four the last few minutes. WGS wants more steel in the team look no further than this guy. Calm , composed on the ball with a hard challenge when its needed. A choice at right back?
Wins my vote.
-
leabgarrow,
"glad to see some more people jumping on the McGlinchey bandwagon."
All aboard! And get one started for young midfielder Simon Ferry, who has been training with the first team and was, according to Strachan, VERY close to getting a seat on the bench.
Even I'm amazed by how quickly our manager is promoting these youngsters.
He seems to be concerned that we have so many midgets, but the likes of Scott Cuthbert, Craig Reid, Darren O'Dea, Charlie Mulgrew and Diarmuid O'Carroll are big, strong lads.
And Jim O'Brien, Teddy Bjarnason and Ryan Conroy ain't no tiddlers.
I have a feeling that the next few weeks will be VERY interesting, as I'm sure Strachan will get rid of quite a bit of dead wood - plus certain others who don't see eye-to-eye with him.
-
Thanks Gavil Guy, will do. Really looking forward to the trip even though I did have to trade a day's shopping for a morning watching the Celtic game!!
Noticed a couple of folk praising Hartson's performance. I'm with you all on that one. Big John played really well and the chance he laid on for McGlinchey was classic BBJ.
Whoever said that he plays well when he doesn't have a lot of chasing to do hit the nail on the head.
McGlinchey was a breath of fresh air when he came on. Lots of energy and seemed really confident on the ball. Would be nice if the meedja gave us some credit for having five homegrown players playing yesterday but then again it would be nice if I won the lottery: neither is going to happen!

Johnbhoy, I think Darren O'Dea will be the next to get his chance. Great cross field passer of a ball, which totally suits our style of play. I like wee Ross, but think his future is as support to Shaun Maloney on left of mid not defence and there is a definite chance at left back for young Darren.
-
Paul,
Agree about Bobo. I'm sure he will concentrate 100% against Hearts though to try to make up for his performance. Did anyone see his lunging slide tackle in the warm up kick about? Bobo always has been an accident waiting to happen!

I'm not sure how to start this story so I'll just come right out with it.
I'd been watching Dunfermline Rangers on Rangers TV (it comes with the package) and just left in on the channel while I came to check the latest on CQN and load some more Beatles into my shiny new Sony Walkman.
I came back and there's this programme called Mr Struth. Guess what? They're making a bust of him. Honouring their roots and all that.
Good idea. Wish we'd thought of it first. Oh, we did, didn't we! Never mind. Follow follow.
So the the camera is panning around the studio while the narrator is reverentially explaining the care and expertise which goes into creating this bust.
And as it pans, there, unmistakably dignified in the background, is the free calendar from the local garage showing...well...among other things...a bust. A pink one. With it's owner on all fours..No question, Can't go into any more details on this family site.
And finally, the words from Mr Struth himself, quoted in hallowed tones, thanking everyone for their support (busts, anyone?) in making Rangers the premier club in the country.
As a dignified mission statement, it is as valid a comparison with Brother Walfrid as are the attempts to equate Kris Boyd with Roy Keane, Chris Burke with Jimmy Johnstone, or quarter finalists with CHAMPIONS.
Got to go and do penance now.
-
I have never been a great believer in squad rotation but IMO the current celtic first 11 needs just that.
Earlier in the season many on here commented about the competition for places within our squad.
Yet it now seems that you can make major errors and have a bad / quiet game and yet still retain your position in the team.
Dont want to complain too much as we are top of the league.
This last few games have seen players gone AWOL.
As the saying doesn't go.
A change is as good as a winters break

To change the subject slightly...
"I watched the incident one hundred times and it was definately a penalty".
A.McLeish, March 2005, the Andy Davis award of a penalty to Rangers for farting near Kyrgiakos.
"I've watched it again on the laptop, and if that's a penalty, then football's going to get really exciting. On that basis, the game is going to have 15 penalties a match."
A.McLeish, December 2005, the award of a penalty against Rangers in injury time.
Only if Kyrgiakos is playing, Alex, because you'll get 5 penalties every time somebody farts near him in the opposition box and 10 against him as he wrestles every opponent in sight in his own box.
Joking aside, I seen the penalty award on TV tonight. For McLeish to defend that is incredible. If you compare the two incidents mentioned above involving the same player only David Blunkett's labrador could come to the same conclusion as McLeish has - the Hearts one was a penalty and the Dunfermline one wasn't.
This is a man responsible for the "100 years of dignity" statement regarding a club who operated a sectarian signing policy.
This is a man who is given the "credit" for restoring Simply The Best to the pre-match repertoire.
This is a man who seized the moment when Hearts were formally requesting an inquiry into the officials with regard to the Davis incident to claim that Rangers don't criticise referees.
All together now....
...aaaaannnnnnddddddd heeeeeee.....
gave them Fanny Jeffers and Alex Rae, he gave them Nacho Novo, Fan Fan and big Marv tae,
Most of the football sh**, has been signed by that big t**,

Chennaiseabird - McLeish just opens his mouth and lets his belly rumble. Earlier this season he came out with a classic "Referees have a hard enough job to do and I don't want to criticise them" (except when they give correct decisions against my team).
Re. Chrissy Burke versus Jimmy Johnstone. Although JJ was one of the finest ever it must be said that Chris Burke is one of the most remarkable specimens ever to play football. Cast your mind back to August 2004 - this boy is the only person in the history of mankind to suffer from heat exhaustion IN ABERDEEN !!!!
-
And what was Alec McLeish's intelligent analysis of the boy's heat exhaustion dilemma?
"He's a wee ginger just like me"

I live in Dublin city centre and I'd recommend three pubs for you.
1. The Cobblestone on North King Street in Smithfield. Not really within walking distance unless you know where you're going. Get a taxi, everyone knows where its at. There's traditional music there every night, the Guinness is great and the staff are dead relaxed. My favourite pub in Dublin.
2. The Lotts on Liffey Street, on the street leading north from the Happenny bridge. There's an old style bar and a trendy lounge. The old bar is great for a few pints.
3. Sin É on Ormonde Quay, a 10 minute walk from O'Connell Bridge along the north quay towards the four courts (ie westwards). Late bar with top class music. Dancing on the table encouraged.
Stay away from Temple Bar unless you want to pay the 20% tourist surcharge that's imposed.
And I'll have nothing bad said about Christy Moore.

I don't think I'm alone in thinking that WGS has done well since hitting the bottom of the bucket in Bratislava, but he needs to focus on the defence without distraction from now until 1st February.
We have very good forwards to choose from, we have very good midfielders to choose from and we have - at last - a real goalkeeper.
We have an entirely inadequate defence. Both full backs need replaced, both central defenders need replaced - although only temporarily in McManus's case. He has shown he'll be good in time.
Once these players have been located and brought in, we will have a strong bench with a mix of youth, experience and flexiblity.
Telfer is an ideal sub - dependable in short bursts in more than one position. McManus, Sutton/BBJ, Beattie, McGeady, Lawson, Telfer - options across the park.
The rest of the team have developed very nicely and have various options available when fit but - WE MUST FIX THE DEFENCE.
-
U2, I agree with you about the defence. See above.
And I agree with you about the midfield. And the forwards. But why are we struggling to score goals?

Chennaisabird: dear, oh dear, they really are a sad lot. How did they they justify a bust of William Struth.
If my reading of history is correct, was it not under his stewardship that Rangers first introduced the policy of not signing Roman Catholics?? (Perhaps you can help on that one Edward?)
I wonder if that will be mentioned when its unveiling is hyped by the media?

U2 I agree
Chenaiseabird We won't score more goals until we drop Hartson.
The forwards are disjointed, playing at two paces, BBJ's and the others.
I am aware that he has good qualities, but these qualities are slowing the gun forwards down.
-
Back to the Livi game I felt there was a distinct lack of movement yesterday especialy in mid-field (Naka excluded). When this happens the passing game becomes less effective, going backwards too often with the result that the forwards go more deeper.
I am a big fan of McGeedy but if he dosn't turn it on in the first ten minutes it sets the tone for the rest of the game. he should have been subbed at half time
-
just watched the 'highlights' on Scotsport. Didn't show the penalty claim.

You could be right about Hartson, but it depends on who we replace him with. Nobody I see just now at the club. I've just watched the condensed version on Scotsport and one thing it did do was highlight how much he was involved in. Wasn't his fault that Petrov and McGlinchey missed the perfect set ups.

ALL of Maloney's attempts on goal shown on Scotsport - bar the header - were on target; give the guy a break, The opposition IS allowed to play well - even the goalie. On another day Shaun'll have a hattrick.
Wallace's missplaced passes and poor positioning? First ensure that your teammates are awake - one perfectly good pass (to Aiden), then move to anticipate the return - meant RW hopelessly out of position when AMcG was not paying attention - see comments earlier re penalty - 100% correct.
January (and beyond) will be be interesting. Once again I recommend Eamon Dunphy's "Only a Game" and the chapter on Bobby Murdoch to the good folks at CQN.

Dear Supporters,
Even the most sacred places on this earth, the places that house
the remains of Christ, are blighted
by profiteers and moneygrabbers.
Likewise, in the football world, which is sacred for those who love football, there also are those - be they agents, journalists, jealous hangers-on or other
'wunderkinds' - who seek to ruin all that is good about the game.
But it is the Devil that is driving them forward, and they are not going to stop.
All that will remain for me is to step aside and bid them farewell on their road to Hell.
V Romanov.
Amazing statement from Romanov on the Hertz site.

Was very amused to read in a paper today, complaints about the penaly awarded to Dunfermline on Boxing Day. Apparently it wasn't a penalty, and to rub salt in, it was awarded in the fourth minute of injury time, when there was only meant to be three added minutes! Sound familiar?
-
JBO'R
In an environment where DD gets abused over his statements re football and the club, I find it amazing that Romanov introduces religion into the equation with no reaction from the press.
It is even more incongruous that he addresses the Hearts fans, who are well known for their tolerance and warm welcomes to our fans.
-
Paul, while i generally agree with most of your observations i must beg to differ with the idea that Bobo would not make the same basic errors against Rangers,if you recall the CIS cup game at Ibrox last season,a harmless looking ball into the box which should have been allowed to either run out of play or back to our goalie, instead it was headed straight back out to the edge of the box to an opposing player, from this BASIC error we then gave away a penalty and subsequently lost the match, the culprit was indeed Bobo,i for one am rapidly running out of patience with this player,he makes far too many such errors and is costing us too many goals. My worry is that we are stuck with him for the foreseeable future,if no-one wanted him as a free agent then why would someone pay a fee now,?,maybe we should cut our losses and give him a sweetener to leave, his best days, and they were very good, are behind him, this upcoming enforced absence could be a blessing in disguise, time to find out how good Scooby is perhaps.
-
I, and others, have been questioning why WGS has not played Du Wei with the impending departure of Bobo to the Africa Nations Cup.
Since Du Wei has been on the bench recently I can only suppose it was WGS' intention of introducing the lad late in the game, presumably when he thought the game was already won, to reduce any pressure on his debut.
Considering our tight situations recently I assume WGS was being prudent in holding Du Wei back to ensure he didn't lose confidence in a defence struggling to regain some form.
-
Chenaiseabird Nor do I.
BBJ reminds me a lot of Big Jon hughes "yogi bear" he could hold the ball and dribble all afternoon and when on song could walk the ball into the net, like he almost did in extra time of our second European Cup Final, the one in Milan with all the Dutchmen and their plastic horns.
However, Jock Stein couldn't use yogi as the forward line was not in anyway fluid as it was without him.
I feel thatt is the same thing Hartson does.
The ball sticks to him and despite the nice layoffs that he does, he slows the line down.
What about Magic?
Any news on him?
I think he would be the man.

Having more than a few pints of the black stuff with the lads last night the discussion got onto Henriks situa at Barca.
To a man and a lassie the resounding result was get him back.
Henrik is a clean living man who takes care of his body he can play for a couple of seasons yet. Within the wage structure of course.
I am quite smitten by the thought of the movement created by Maloney, Naka, Petrov, Mcgeady, Zura and the king would make.
On Virgo watching the game on Celtic tv when he came on he had about 6-7 touches on the ball ALL were composed some ended up in GOOD forward passing he made tackles and in my opinion WILL be our right back.
-
Back on Xmas Eve I did predict a 2-1 victory,so here are some random thoughts on events at the weekend
1/Some brave person has to break into Chez Bobo and confiscate his Harlem Globetrotters DVDs.
He is not,repeat not,Meadowlark Lemon.
Allowing for the crassness of the goal,he did not deserve to be booed.
2/Good performances from Naka and the Prince of Wales. It was great to see a midfielder grab the game by the scruff of the neck and refuse to settle for a draw.
3/Mcglinchey looked lively when he came on.Did not disappear after missing a chance
4/First foul on Maloney-if not a penalty then why not an indirect freekick in the box?
One of the worst decisions I have seen.
5/Big game coming up in the next few days,so why not rest Petrov?
He looke like he is carying an injury, but has been playing the full 90 minutes
6/I am aware it is no longer a sin,but it seemed a bit odd to be leaving the ground to the sound of The Vapors'homage to Onanism.
Forties east 5 to 7,
occasionally gale 8 in
South Utsire.
Wintry showers.

There you go, I was a Yogi fan as well. Different kind of player, but I know what you mean. But I do think that when BBJ is able to stay up he helps the smaller faster players around him, and he and Maloney are developing a good understanding.
Strachan might rethink when he's got a bigger stronger defence, but right now I think we need BBJ's physical presence.
And yes, I was there that night in the San Siro:(
-
I cannot agree with all the criticism of Big Bobo, he makes one mistake and gets hammered for it, its outrageous. If the midfield and the forwards were doing their job properly, the defence wouldn't be so nervous having to hang on to a one goal lead, we should be hammering teams at the bottom of the table, the fact that we're not is certainly not down to big Bobo. All the flak he is getting is more to do with everybody assuming - and that what it is an assumption - that he's the Top Earner at Celtic Park.
When the forwards are failing to hit the net and the midfielders are anonymous - who does the game fall right on top of - the defence. Who is our front line defender unafraid to go in where it hurts - Big Bobo. Give the guy a break. I was there when Jorg Albert broke Lambo's jaw in a 4 - 2 gubbing by Rangers, we were getting pushed around all over the place, like kids on the wrong end of a doing from the local bully boys. Physically out muscled. If we get more Ross Wallace's, Aiden McGeady's, Shaun Maloney's etc into the starting 11 we'll be back to those days as quick as a flash. And I've nothing against those 3 players - but definitely worried - the trend is more and more wee guys are coming into the team.

Hail Hail!
Long-time reader, previous anonymous poster and finally got round to sorting out my own account.
Was at the game on St. Stephen's Day and feel that the previous posts have covered the majority of points re Bobo and the defence quite well.
IMO however the back-four should be shaped as follows for the Tynecastle match: -
Left back - Telfer
Left centre half - McManus
Right CH - Bobo
Right back - Agathe
WGS is not going to drop PT, so why not accomodate him in this position? He is a reasonable defender (alright his crossing is pretty poor and he has made numerous defensive mistakes, most noteably the Peesho goal at Ibrox) however I feel he could do a job here until we can get someone else in the transfer window. He is certainly better defensively than Wallace, which will be crucial against a good side like Hearts.
Re centre of defence - we just have to go with what we have got here until January / African Nations. Bobo certainly does appear to play better in the more physical games, however I feel he has been encouraged by WGS to play with the ball at his feet more and adapt a passing style compared with when MON was in charge. This has undoubtedly been a factor relating to the increased number of mistakes he has made this season.
Agathe - I think we've got to play him direct against Skacel. He has always performed well defensively against Rankers and in Europe, IMO it's time to bury the hatchet with WGS get him back in the team. He would also offer us increased pace which is lacking somewhat at the back.
The only other right back option other than Agathe would be Virgo. Watched the reserve game against Livi on Celtic TV and he played there, and he also reverted to that position after Naka's wonder goal on Monday, with Telfer at left back.
Just a thought....

Just caught up with the posts. Missed the game due to a three line family whip.
Poor display against Livi on Boxing Day, last minute goal by the man head and shoulders above everybody on the park to win the game.........5 years ago Henrik Larsson. That team didn't do too badly.
Agree with earlier posts re boo boys and early leavers thank god they haven't built a tube station or some might coin them the Subway Loyal.
We're top of the league and should be encouraging the team. And more vocal support for the manager wouldn't go wrong.

David Murray was driving through Govan last week when he spotted a little old lady struggling with her weekly shopping. She had 6 bags and was clearly having difficulties carrying them.
He politely pulled over to see if she was alright.
He put his window down and asked........"Can you manage............?"
The little old lady immediately replied " Ye can shove yir job up yir ****"

Bigjoe I would alos make Bobo captain, Captain of the reserves.
Bobo has indeed had many fine games for Celtic but his time is now up.
I can accept the opposition scoring against us if they have worked hard for their goal but I cannot accept Bobo giving away goals left right and centre due to his lack of concentration and lack of dribbling skills especially in our penalty area.

Paul,
We've had all the arguments for and against big Bobo on here, which is probably about 50/50, my concern is that the last time we left him out of the team we lost 4 goals 2 of which came from free headers in the box, if my memory serves me correct. The last 3 games we have been playing with 10 men as Stilian Petrov has been totally anonymous, Ross Wallace as we can all see is struggling in his new position and I don't think Shaun Maloney is anywhere nearly as effective at this moment playing up front, than when was playing wider earlier on in the season. The loss of Craig Beattie and Maciej Zurawski has seriously upset the balance of the team at this moment in time let hope we see them back soon.
As for getting onto Celtic players backs this is not a new thing from our fans I remember guys like Dom Sullivan, Frank McGarvey, and even Roy Aitken getting stick from the Jungle unfortunately this will never go away no matter how much you ask.
Season’s greetings to one and all.
Cheers
George
p.s. do you think Kojo has put a hex on Bobo and Stilian?

"Aliadiere hits out at Pardew"
looks like Gordon Strachan knew what he was doing after all. I wonder if our friends in the Scottish media will pick up on this?

Fleet45 @ 10.34 Spot on. The pressure on the defence (which basically consists of 3 players Balde, McManus & Lennon) was highlighted in the games v. Dunfermline, Inverness & Livingston. We are just not scoring enough goals without Beattie and Zurawski. At home to teams at bottom of the league we should be scoring 2-3 goals but if you don't then you increase the pressure on your defence.
I also fear we will ruin Wallace by playing him at full back. He has a terrific cross and should be played as a left winger - nothing else. I'm sure Thommo could cover at left back.
I'm glad WGS mentioned the lack of height in the team. For all of us who witnessed the nineties this is a very worrying trend. What WGS was trying to achieve by putting McGlinchey on to win a match was beyond me. Burns should be sent packing if the best he can find is little leprechauns. Someone should tell Mr Burns in the modern game you need men.
In summary I would say there are more worrying areas of the team than central defence.

Lets not start booing the leprechauns! They might lead us to the pot of gold! as Wee shaun certainly did on boxing day! 'course Naka is no big man either...
ps. be kind...1st posting & i like our wee bhoys xx
