Celtic looking for two strikers for next season

“We are a wee bit light on strikers at the moment, that’s a problem”, is the most telling comment from Gordon Strachan in weeks.

John Hartson has been the only fully fit striker at the club for months.

Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady have been pressed into forward positions to the detriment of the Celtic midfield and their own form.

The news that Craig Beattie will be at least another six weeks on the sidelines is hugely disappointing for a player who has missed the business part of two seasons now.

Beattie is under contract until 2008, but his injury record has forced an increase in headcount allocation for next season.

I understand that Strachan believes Celtic need two further strikers for the start of next season to cover potential injuries, suspensions and loss of form.

With Beattie and Zurawski missing for so much of this season, Strachan has been unable to impose his ‘pace’ philosophy onto the team.

He wants Celtic to always play with a striker who can make runs into wide positions to give their defence the option of playing the ‘out ball’.

We can expect Bosman signings for this supplementary requirement.

    Paul,

Was just replying to neillybhoy7 on old post when I saw the new one. Craig Beattie's injury seems to be very severe. It does make sense that with him and Magic out so long, Strachan has been unable to really have the team playing as he would like.

Even so, while it makes sense to try and get a couple of strikers, I still think we need a left back and centre back as priorities.

I fail to see why people are getting upset about Du Wei heading back to China. He's been at Celtic Park for months now - that's a pretty long trial in anybody's book. Forget the Clyde showing (although it was pretty miserable) Strachan should have been able to assess his qualities as a footballer by now and he obviously doesn't think he's a £700k chance worth taking. For goodness sake the lad couldn't break into the dodgiest Celtic back line for manys a year - ask yourself what that says about him.
And while you ask yourself that - might also be worth asking yourself about Adam Virgo's credentials too. His favoured position is right back yet he can't shift Telfer from the right back slot - so much so that we've gone out and bought a new right back.

    Alarm bells anyone????

Never mind next season, with Beattie out for another 4-6 weeks,Sutton gone, and given Hartson and Zurawski's injury records I feel we need to get someone in NOW. The same applies to the Centre half position especially with DuWei gone, surely a deal for Caldwell will be done before the window closes?

To all you Johnny-cum-lately 1st posters. I remember the day when some of us did it with a degree of humility and graceful nonchelance (look back) : )

How come none of the reserve/youth strikers can step up in the event of injuries. Is it a case of that they need to fill-out a bit. Michael Owen is no Emile Heskey ... and that obviously works on more than one level.

We are cryiing out for defenders not extra strikers! I remember when Manure had no thirty goal a season man, but five or six who each chipped in 10 or so.

    All the best

Haven't posted in some time, so a Happy New Year to all!

I look forward to seeing a partnership of Beattie and Magic, but that looks to be some time off now. BBJ is on his way out, I would think, Maloney is not a striker and deffo neither is McGeady. So on you go Gordon, bring us something good in the January sales.

My main reason for posting though, is on a different tangent. I felt I had to comment on this to as broad a section of the 'tic support as I could.

Why was Parkhead half empty come 90 minutes!?!? This is true hun behavious and has always been something which separated us from them. Totally shameful stuff!

Please, people, stay for 90 minutes. The effect it has on the players is clear.

Apologies if this has already been discussed, I haven't had time to keep up to date with the chat recently.

    Hail Hail!

I agree that a new short-term solution is needed. Zurawski has shown plenty of promise especially in that wee spell just before he got leg-knack and Beatts, unfortunately having plenty of promise continually gets a niggling injuries, that should go away with age (Should he change his dentist?? I'll expain if anyone gets confused later)

WeeShaun is not a striker in the henrik goal getter sense and Aiden most certainly isn't, so something clearly needs to be done...

If KM does sign-up (I personally don't want him as I think we might be better served looking elsewhere rather than the EC)then all well and good in terms of headcount, but surely a pan-european scouting system must be able to turn something up, somewhere, n'est-ce pas?

Where did Hearts turn up Skacel or Pospisil? Don't we have guys looking at these markets and seeing potential Bosman's as let's face it, we are going to be looking at Bosman's for a while.....There must be somebody somewhere with talent who can do a job for us......surely?

One more thing, can anyone tell me the state of the reserves strikers, are any of them looking like they might be able to take the step up. I've heard Rocco Quinn might look the part and the bigger of the two Finnish lads....anybody else to keep tabs on?

The DD shareholding was a condition of the share issue along with the move to the AIM.

97 goals in 200 games is Miller's record. For the record, he is continually refer to as a Rangers 'reject'. This is a nonsense, he was signed by Advocaat (or Murray) along with lots of others and never given ample chance to prove himself. In the summer we were linked with Niemi and it was 'oh, great - a star this guy'. Without question a Rangers Reject as well.

    timlord,

Adam Virgo's favourite position is Centre half, but he has played across the back 4. In his first interview he mentioned that he had been earmarked (by the manager) for the right back slot.

Iv a bad feeling the loss of Sutty will hit us hard next year if things are not going well.

  • At 18/01/06 11:29, Blogger GM said…

Thanks for that thismancraig. Your observations on Niemi show that most of us are against the signing of Miller because he is crap, not because he is an ex Rangers palyer.

Indeed, if memory serves me correctly,I don't think an eyebrow was raised when Niemi was rumoured to be joining us. Why? Because he was a quality keeper (I think the fact he didn't languish too long in the Championship attests to this).

Kenny freakin' Miller on the other hand.....................

  • At 18/01/06 11:39, Blogger thismancraig said…

I've never watched Miller regularly enough to decide. A year ago, I thought he was crap. After watching him against Italy, I thought, fair enough - massive improvement based on that one game.

I raised my eyebrow on several occassions at the signing of Niemi.
    The reasons

    - 2 years at Hearts and 2 years at Southampton doesn't strike me as £3 million pound pedigree!
    - he was a Rangers reject!
    - 34 years old with a reasonable injury record.

Miller is worth a punt for free I think, certainly not deserving of the almost universal derision that it is getting

i was actually peeeed off when they signed arveladze as he was a goalscorer, and
is proving so again with a decent team. (tin hat on)
i just cant believe hes actually registered on our radar, bosman or not.

You've missed the point thismancraig. Not many of us questioned Niemi's ABILITY.

THAT is the issue with Miller.

Is this the best that our scouting network can do? Force us to take random punts on mediocre players.

For the record, I didn't utter one word on the signing of Zurawski, Naka, Camara, Bourc or Telfer. Why? Beacuase I didn't know them Adam and had no idea how good/bad they were.

Unfortunately I have seen Miller with my own eyes on several occassions and for all he may have had one reasonable game against Italy, one swallow does not a summer make.

Agreed. Don't know how many on here have actually watched KM playing. I know that I haven't seen that much of him since I don't really follow (hate that word!) English fitba.

I do however attend Scotland games, and have been quite impressed by him against the likes of Italy and Norway.

Certainly think he is worth a try, especially since it seems that Beatts is going to be injured for an extended period - we need cover up front. Imagine if BBJ gets crocked?

Still need a centre half as well, and a LB. And Lenny needs a rest.

thismancraig is correct - Adam Virgo is a Centre Half, where he will surely play this Sunday against Motherwell.

Please everybody remember when talking about Virgo, he had an operation in the summer and did not even start pre-season training until early August.(six weeks behind the rest of the squad)

Therefore his earlier appearances in the hoops (Aug/Sept) should be discounted as he was trying to achieve some kind of match fitness. Whereas his performance against Clyde was one of the few plus points from that game.

A below par game for Virgo on Sunday will no doubt bring heavy criticism on him but unfortunately this will be due more to the recent poor defensive displays of other people.

I wish Adam Virgo all the best in his Celtic career, which for me starts for real this Sunday.

I think Niemi's ability to be Celtic goalkeeper should have been questioned. He's a Southampton goalie, or Fulham or Hearts...simple as that.

Our much derided scouting network did come up with the best young goalkeeper in Britain right now so can't be all bad.

I think Miller would score a lot of goals for Celtic, not saying he's top of my list but he'd be ahead of comparable targets such as Riordan. I'm sure it wouldn't be a random punt either, Strachan will sign player's when he is ready to judge their ability. Most people on here are making random punts at his ability based on seeing him live on 1 or 2 occassions.

Will be extremely disappointed if that's the calibre of player WGS has for the Celtic squad, never mind the first team. No better than Mark Burchill. I'd rather take my chances on McGlinchey or O'Carroll or the like.

    On a separate note:

    Dermot Desmond 41.1%
    Christpoher Trainer 7.32%
    John Keane 5.52%
    Michael Culhane 3.7%

57.64% of our club in the hands of 4 men.

    Hi Paul

Quite frankly am astonished by this comment by WGS. Have to agree with Parkheadcumsalford 10:52. The defense is still a shambles.

Noticed Mo Camara's comments this morning. Now while I am not a huge fan of his, the defense was better with him than Ross Wallace. Like a lot of the Celtic faithful I thought that Camara's form had improved dramatically over his early games. However, he is not the finished article, not by a long way.

I can agree we need to bolster the attack. The shortcomings here are well documented. But the priorities have to be the defense. It is shipping goals at an alarming rate against very mediocre opposition. Assuming we can win the SPL - and that's not a forgone conclusion, we would be totally embaressed in next year's Champions League with the current crop of defenders.

Ultimately we have to accept that although Celtic may have EPL ambitions. they only have an SPL budget. To get round that, Bosman's, and finding some gems in the youth policy may have to be the way of things for some years to come yet.

So Virgo's a Centre Half now is he??

Amazing, when he came, he and WGS made it clear he was being earmarked for the RB position.

Of the 70 odd games he played at senior level for BHAFC and Exeter on loan - he played the majority of them as a striker.

Now he' s definately a Centre Back? Why? He's hardly played there at senior level. Indeed his first start for us was at the Pars in centre midfield when Lenny was suspended.

I think that CB will hopefully prove to be his best position due to his size and weight, however, if WGS doesn't know what he is, how do any of us here know it as gospel?

Evil as a closet Seagull what's your take on this?
BTW show some grace if you do post first and check out the Predictorship, I jumped 6 or 7 places this week!!!

If we sign Kenny miller, we might as well start wearing Sky Blue shirts, start singing a Jimmy Hill inspired version of the Eton Boating Song and look forward to Ade Adeboyla (sp?) arriving in the summer. This is the standard we seem to be aspiring to now.

Might start looking at the Ricoh Arena more closely to see what I have to look forward to next season.

Champions League or the EPL?? Looks like were gearing down to be ready for entry into the bottom of the English senior football pyramid with these possible signing rumours.

He is supporting his long time friend and business colleague, Marc Keenan in the purchase of Score Outdoor (Displays) Ltd from one of the world’s leading media companies, Clear Channel, for an undisclosed sum.

In March 1999, Chris (35) sold the business Trainer Ltd, then the leading Scottish outdoor advertising company, to Scottish Radio Holdings in a £27.5 million deal.

In July this year the Score group was sold by SRH to Clear Channel.

It was at this stage that Marc Keenan made his approach to the new owners with an offer to buy Score Outdoors (Displays) Ltd, the group company that provides large-scale banners and display boards as well as marketing and producing advertising for major sports stadia.

reality check required. The Miller level is the market we are in like it or not.

I for one would have no problem with us signing him especially on a bosman although I do agree with an earlier comment that given the injury record of our strikers cover is needed now.

The defence should improve dramatically when the boy Wilson
    comes in at right back.
Although the centre of defence is still a major worry, the ease at which balls are played in from that side is astonishing.
It is difficult enough for any central defensive pairing playing together for the first time without having to deal with a continual bombardment 'cause your right back doesn't tackle.

Are we not still zonal marking in the penalty area giving attackers time to run on to crosses. Look at the way goals have been lost recently.

everyone is arguing about what Adam Virgo's best position is.

I will tell you what his best position is. In the stand with a scarf around his kneck. He shouldnt be allowed near a football pitch, let alone on one with a Celtic strip.

The money wasted on him, and Telfer, and Du Wei, and Camara would have got us a decent centre half. However, I can only assume this is a lesson learned for Gordon, a man who claimed to have spent his recuperation time watching football all over the world.

I realise the defence is the main priority at the moment but it wouldn't hurt to get a half decent striker in at the present.A Joe McBride or a Willie Wallace would do nicely, thank you Lord.yours John-b.

As a "Cloest Seagull" as Baldymeister so elequently put it, My take on Virgo is still as it was at the start of the season.

Yes, he has played up front on numerous occasions for Brighton, but this was down to the need for anything to play up there as at the time, Brighton had only one other fit striker, (Leon...Judas...Knight) (Discounting Chris Iwelumo on grounds of advertising standards, calling him a footballer is simply lying)

Brighton fans have always said he's a centre back first and foremost, but he has also played both left and right back, although to my knowledge, I'd never seen him play centre mid before.

My guess is of 70 games let's say over two seasons really, he played 25-30 at the back in various positions and the remainder as starting centre forward, where tbf, he did OK. He did get the legendary last minute goal and agaist Greetin'JohnKing's Swindon to take them to Cardiff and will forever be remebered for that alone down the Withdean/Falmer..wherever we're playing in five year's time..hint hint Mr Prescott)

I have said he needs a regular position in order to maintain development. He cannot be allowed to proceed as a jack player as he will not realise his potential.

I for one was delighted when he signed as I had seen him play regularly and really fancied his pospects of developing. I feel to an extent he has stagnated, although his performance against Clyde shone out like a beacon for me with his (admittedly one lapse) but overall calmness and use of the ball. I would be highly te,mpted to play him alongside Keano on sunday and see how he copes with that little Aussie whose name still strikes fear into my heart. If he copes with that OK, then maybe an extended run might be due as I personally feel big Mick needsa a wee rest and lessons in tackling without decapitation.

    Onto baldy's other comment.

NEVER EVER WILL THIS CLUB ACCEPT BEING AT THE LEVEL OF COVENTRY CITY. IT IS ALWAYS WILL BE UNACCEPTABLE. Although how nice would it be to have a ten minute drive to the ground rather than the trip from London to an away game..... How good to goad all your old friends at their local ground from the away end......get in there....can we arrange a friendly at least?

As for the predictorship...I cannot believe i let you slip in ahead of me......justice will be mine...oh and 2-1 on first posts now bruv...

Agree that moving wee Shaun up front in recent weeks has been to the detriment of the midfield. It has been similar to the times when we used to move Lubo up front to cover for injuries.

Magic coming back in (although he was understandably rusty) allowed Shaun to go back to his best position which not only benefitted him but Nakamura as well.

As for a certain Wolves striker that we all seem to be getting agitated about I'm not going to comment until I see him standing next to Gordon Strachan on the Celtic Park turf with a green and white scarf over his head.

By some of the posts you would assume that we have the same spending power as Chelsea. I think one or two people need a wee wake up call & understand our financial situation & the reality of modern football. Teams like Lyon & Ajax build successful teams, then move on their best players for profit & start the cycle all over again. If we do that, the backlash from the majority of fans/media is hysterical.

I concede that players like Kenny Miller, Gary Caldwell & Derek Riordan are hardly world beaters but if we can bring them in on bosmans, they would be more than useful squad players & could easily do a job in the SPL.

Who would've predicted that players like Jackie McNamara, Didier Agathe, Bobby Petta etc would sparkle at Champions League level or be involved in a European final. So with that in mind we should maybe leave the player critique to masters of the game like Keevins.

If you ever witnessed the hoops under MON when Larsson didn't play you would see the true picture & how fortunate MON was to have a player of his ilk.

That's why i'm giving Strachan every opportunity to get it right. If we can balance the squad with young players like Wilson/Maloney/McManus, reliable players like Kenny Miller/Gary Caldwell and some top drawer players like Boruc/Keane/Petrov/Nakamura/Zurawski we are quietly assembling a decent side.

Admittedly Telfer has hardly been an inspired signing but for every Sutton, MON followed that up with a Sylla or a Fernandez

    Hi Paul,
I've been folloing the K.M debate over the past couple of days, the general opinion seems to be that he is not quite good enough for Celtic, that's something I'm ambivalent about, he failed to make it at Rangers as a youngster, he plied his trade in the lower league in England, he also has a fair scoring record and international experience, I would say he is a borderline case. This leads on to my second point, for a while on here I've read several posts about the financial meltdown at Ibrox, about huge debts, (none of which I'd argue with) and how this is going to lead to a financially stable Celtic with a stream of top class bosmans and a superb team coming through the youth system, I know no one poster made all three points but they are points that are repeated by some of the more respected posters on here. I have my doubts about this, some bosman gems can be picked p but not many, some great layers come through youth systems, bit only on very rare occasions do you get a crop of them. Have a look at the players leaving Celtic Park, some of them I will admit are past their best but does anyone really think that the quality of the team is being sustained? From appearances the Celtic search from players is in the same level of market as Rangers and Hearts just now, I know we have disagreed over generational domination, but if the present signing policy prevails I think you will have bother retaining the league next year never mind for a generation. Either the playing field in transfers is a lot more level than has been suggested or money is being kept back from the manager. I don't expect many to agree with my points but they are something to consider.
On a quick reference to the last thread can I say that I agree with those who think there is nothing wrong with strong rivalry between Rangers and Celtic, as long as it's based on football terms (which the posters made clear) then I think it's a good thing for each club, there is no point in winning if you don't have a rival to crow over :-)

Not posted for a while now but have to say I'm all for Kenny Miller signing, he had an excellent goals per game ratio whilst playing for the darkside, he would be an excellent partner for Magic, he'd score a barrow load of goals. Henrik Larsson would have struggled to score goals for Scotland so would not right him off because of his Scotland performance's, and as per previous posts like it or lump it that's the market we are in now, in other words we're skint.

  • At 18/01/06 13:30, Blogger thismancraig said…

    edward, great post.

I think its difficult to sustain the quality of the team from 2003. This is generally regarded (we can argue later) as the finest Scottish team / achievement for a generation. Naturally, its the best Celtic team I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Since then however its been downhill all the way e.g. the minimum achievement the next season had to be last 16 - didn't happen for us though.

On your other point about the rivalry, I agree - I have no worries about my dislike of Rangers. This does not extend to my Rangers supporting friends - as you will know, there is nothing better than the victorious banter. The problem however is that for some, victorious banter means 'stab and kill'.

Nothing wrong in this but I can tell you, if you saw Chris walking down London Road after a game, you would not think he was a multi-millionaire.

A fair head of steam is building up over these Kenny Miller stories.
Can I remind you that he was absolutely outstanding against the cream of Serie A just a few months ago?
He is a real team player with bags of pace. And in the past 12 months he seems to have got fitter, stronger, faster and more confident.
I reckon he is a FAR better player now than he was when he left Rangers.
I also reckon this could signal the departure of BBJ, either now or in the summer. Much though I love the big guy and his goals, his lack of mobility severely restricts the type of football we play and does not fit in with the pacy passing-and-moving of guys like Nakamura, Zurawski, Petrov and Maloney.
Incidentally, a wee birdie told me that another centre forward has been discussing a move north in the summer. One who already has a namesake in the starting 11.

Paul - i have to disagree with your point that the incomming strikers will be a supplementary signing.

Given that John Hartson is becoming increasingly immobile and Beattie has yet to prove himself at a higher level ,i.e. Rangers or Europe, then we are still very much looking for a top class striker that can help us compete in the champions league. I believe Zurawski will be able at this level given his track record but even then he has became increasingly unreliable.

We also need to consider that the ONLY reason we done so well in Europe was Larsson; he made an average team Uefa cup finalists and brave losers. Still having failed to come close to replacing him, we cannot be considered serious contenders for the second round of the champions league.

A top class striker is required to get us back to the quality of a few years ago never mind move the club forward. To think otherwise would be foolish.

I'm not too fussed about KM. He's been Wolves best player for a couple of seasons now and has a scored a fair number of goals despite often being played wide right.

I'm a bit of a stato freak and like to keep an eye on the player ratings for KM, McFadden etc in the sunday papers down here.

He rarely gets rated at less than 7. Pretty consistent in an average team.

I remember Glen Hoddle singing his praises on many an occassion.

What I noticed about his performances for Scotland recently is that he's turned into a Paul Dickov type terrior. The type of striker who annoys the hell out of defenders by chasing them all over the park kicking at their heals.

He is also the type of player who will feed well off Maloney and Naka's through balls. He's got plenty of pace.

I doubt if he'll be anything more than a player but as a Bosman I think it will turn out to be good business for us.

I agree we need to find a replacement for BBJ if he's going to be leaving us soon but I haven't seen any sensible thoughts on here or realistic rumours on the net. I think it will likely be a Eastern European scouting job.

    EdwardUrsus Good post

I think what all this highlights is that the finances of Scottish clubs are some way behind their ambitions. More and more these days when a Scottish team does well in Europe, and that doesn't happen too often. It could be argued that they are punching well above their weight. In financial terms certainly that could be said of Celtic after the UEFA Cup Final of 2003. The team standards on the field have been slipping ever since.

Realistically we can't afford to buy up the star players, and whilst we are still in the SPL, we never will. The likelyhood of another Henrik Larsson turning up are pretty remote to say the least.

Like many people on this site, I amn't exactly too enamoured by some of the names being linked with Celtic. I don't care who they played for before by the way. If they can play well for Celtic, that's all I would care about. Much as I would like us to be signing big name stars on a whim like Chelsea, the truth is Celtic (or any other Scottish club) just won't have the finances to do it.

The chances of us joining the EPL seem as remote as ever. European League anyone?

Sylla and Fernandez are exactly the type of signing you are advocating.

Talk up the team and Gordon Strachan, but lay off bashing a legend as rocky foundations to your point. I could name a few more than Telfer at the moment as potential poor signings, but I am happy with Gordon Strachans progress and the trailer to the bigger picture looks good.

I want conclusive confirmation before I start shouting at somebody......I want photo's (dodgy Hartson video phone will do) I want anything..I will not believe he is there until Miller is photographed with WGS on the turf with the scarf above his head...

Then I will yell and scream and make my two housemates bear the brunt of my sheer rage at another disctinctly average player turning up at CP.

Oh and if it does happen, prepare youselves for a diatribe from Baldymeister who is now in the second stages of apoplexy....I see smoke out of his ears and I'm 100 miles away and the red heat of his baldy pate is shining bright inn the North...

A lot of negativity about the possible Miller signing. You guys must see a lot more of Wolves than I do.I can only judge on what I've seen him do for Scotland this season, and I thought he was excellent against Italy and scored 2 good goals against Norway, seems to have improved for leaving the huns (who wouldn't).So if we can get him in to add to Wilson at RB,Halmosi at LB and Caldwell at CB (not forgetting Keano)that would be a very productive January.

Wasn't too happy when I heard the K Miller rumours, but then I asked myself,

Would I like to see him play against us ? He has lightning pace and puts in a shift, can't question his workrate?

(OK, workrate doesn't equal skill, but defenders hate it).

Answer is No, so if the guy does join, lets give him a chance to at least prove he deserves to wear the jersey.

1st time poster here but an avid follower of CQN for what seems about 2 years now.

I would like to put forward a strategy for our signing policy. Since the club are trying to lower costs at the moment surely a policy of going for the best available (for whatever position we require) out of contract players is our first option. Second I would look at all available top class loan signing's, like veron from chelsea to inter, crespo from chelsea to milan, the other summer. if the club looks hard enough then these players are available at the start of seasons and in january. I think our reputation is starting to make players think twice about us as a realistic european force with ambitions for the future and I believe top class loan signings can be brought in every year. A loan signing policy like this should work if we do it every season, this way we would consistantly keep the level of quality. If we are realistic about the clubs ambitions then policies like this have to be adopted until the transformation of european football becomes a reality, our income will grow then, with tv and media driving this looks enivitable in the next 2 decades. Add this to a transfer budget each season of between 3-5 million, the acquisition of young players through the scouting setup which is being much heralded at the moment and I believe the club will be what we all want it to be, a consistent player in the champions league group stages and beyond.

also just like to say a quick thanks to Paul67 and crew for giving the fans a voice, keep up the great work.

The KM situation worries me.He's no a bad player and has pace and fire in his approach and he's proved he can score goals at club and international level. My concern is over the divisions it may cause within the support.

Hopefully, if he does sign on, any booing, unpleasantness etc will be a seven day wonder and he'll get the fans behind him.If not the hard earned reputation won by the support throughout the football world will be at serious risk.

Beattie also worries me as he has all the makings of a professional sick-note and I wonder will he ever make it at CP or anywhere else.Sadly Majic seems to be almost as fragile and BBJ can be as much of a sick-note even when he's fit and well and on the park.Help upfront is definitely needed and if Miller is all the budget runs to then so be it.

Halmosi( sp check?) is a tall lanky bloke who allegedly plays anywhere on the left and falls down quite a lot.. Peter Huistra, ring a bell with anybody?

Edward, You are either spectacularly wrong or uncannily on the mark. I think it will take until the summer to see which.

One thing that I do agree with you on is that from where I am looking it seems that Celtic, Rangers and Hearts are fishing in the same pool of players. I am reserving judgement on this being the new order at Parkhead until the summer, as I think (and I am paraphrasing and am quite prepared to be corrected) that Paul previously stated that IF we qualify for the Champion's League, Celtic can afford a net spend of £7 million per annum on players. Not taking into account Adam Virgo's add ons which account to around 50% of the total £1.5 million that we are supposed to have agreed on his fee, I make our summer spending £6.3 million give or take a bit. Add Mark Wilson to the mix and you have a spend of £6.8m so not a million miles away and just about does for our budget this season.

I am hopeful that we will see the same spend in the summer assuming we qualify for the CL. If not, we'll know that the ba's burst, but only then will we know for sure. If we can supplement this with (good) Bosmans, then it does make sense.

I think the one thing that is certain is that Rangers' own financial situation appears much more murky and bleak. Not wishing to be provocative, but if Celtic can sustain this very modest spend (by recent standards) we should be in the position to keep abreast of the challenge of Rangers.

However, football throws up huge surprises. For years David Murray , to use poker parlance, bought the game but came unstuck when Martin O'Neill and a little bit of good luck conspired against him. I believe that it is this that is responsible for your current predicament, and who's to say that it would not happen to Celtic at some stage?

A generation of dominance? Well, I'm not sure yet, but one thing is certain, I would not wish to swap places with Rangers at the minute.

Your posts are a pleasure as always.

    Edward,

    Interesting post on finance.

However, I do think you are missing the points (and facts) a bit. Apart from the relevant debt situations of the clubs, and let's remember Celtic have just reduced theirs significantly via the share issue. Ranger’s debt situation is unknown, all we can go on is the MIH accounts released at the end of the year which show a net debt of £121m. If in next years accounts he show’s the £50m debt transfer from one Murray company to another (Rangers to MIH), it still leaves £71m owed by Rangers (and the £50m “shares purchase” debt still has not gone away, its just at another part of his business. As I read on a Rangers web site “he has taken out a bank loan to pay his mortgage!”

Celtic also spent £7m in the summer, Rangers spent £0 only Bosmans. So far in this transfer window Celtic have spent £500K [Wislon] plus Bosman's (Keane and probably Halmosi, with further Bosman deals for Caldwell and Miller coming in the summer, we may yet pay a fee to take both now.). Rangers on the other hand look like they have spent £150k net (money for the boy from Killy - money received for Stevie Thompson). [I still don't think they will spend £10m as predicted by Big Derek, do you?).

I believe the point that Paul makes in his "generation of dominance" posts is that Celtic will continue to be net spenders in the transfer markets (because they can and are in charge of their own finances) where Rangers will not, because the can't as they are clearly not in charge of theirs.

This brings me to my other point. At the moment the press are doing a fine job of talking up this major investment supposedly coming to Rangers (despite the fact their is not a hint of any proof this will happen). The point that nobody seems to be considering is this. Let’s just say a benefactor has £10m to invest in Rangers, as far as I can see there is only two ways this could happen.

    1. He buys £10m of shares from DM. Now David hasn't been good at putting his own money into Rangers so hard to see he will spend this £10m. However, let’s assume he suddenly turn philanthropist and puts the £10m in. With a net debt of £121m are we really to believe that HBOS won't want this £10m towards the debt?

    2. Mr unknown buys players for Rangers and loans or rents them (as per the youth set up), very very dangerous ground.

    Thoughts?

As for any talk of booing Kenny Miller if and when he does sign, that would be disgraceful. So he played for the huns for a short time,so what he'll be wearing a Green and white hooped jersey, that'll do for me.

And as for where his families allegiances lie,if that matters to anybody thank God they weren't in the Jungle when Danny McGrain/Kenny Dalglish/Davie Provan/Murdo Macleod etc.etc. were doing the business with more passion than you could have hoped for. Then again nobody left the Jungle with 10 minutes to go every week.

Regarding the Kenny Miller signing which now looks odds on. I think the supporters will respect the fact he wants to sign for the hoops, regardless etc.

Just a wee point,he did support the huns as a boy, but i know his cousin (his dads brothers boy)and he`s a big tim, sometimes has a tricolour in the van he drives.

So i would say, not a family steeped in the tradition of the black arts!!

Has Mr T Burns got a lot to do with the latest signings. Miller,Caldwell(not confirmed yet) Wilson, seems like a risky policy for WGS.

I think the Hungarian boy will play left back, looks like the Du Wei money will be used to fund this.

My initial fear on KM is one of taking a backward step. But on reflection he is a speed merchent and a striker who is willing to run the channels seems to be WGS vision of footballing utopia.

If it really comes to bear (gedditt????!!)then we have to welcome him to the fold.

I will be looking forward to KM scoring the winner on his old firm debut.

Johnbhoy - A good friend of mine works for Spurs (actually its the Chairman Daniel Levy) . During lunch today he told me that Celtic were certs to sign Robbie Keane on a pre-contract agreement. Robbie is out of contract in the summer and is dying to sign for his boyhood heroes. He is Irish so he must be a Celtic fan (according to the formula I learned at tabloid college ; Irish = Celtic Lover = bigot = tattie muncher). Having earned a fortune at Wolves, Coventry, Leeds, Inter & Spurs he will take a massive pay cut and sign for us on a £500 a week contract.

To clear up his family tree, Robbie is not related to Roy, John, Eddie or Dominic but he related to the band Keane.

He's missed crucial goals in the past few years, a few that stick in the memory are the 2nd goal against Lyon, Suttons last minute winner against TFOD, not to mention several other nail-biters.

For the life of us we've tried to guess why he does it (From a Priest to a Bus-Driver). Anyone got any suggestions before we confront him.

Like most others not exactly impressed with the Kenny Miller signing - probably would have preferred Windy Miller - (some of these signings do now appear to be right out of Trumpton and I'm a tad worried)

I think paul67 said on Sunday night on one of his posts ( I'm sure it was just before one of mine so that's why I remember it)that if anyone believes the stories about Celtic signing KM they should have their head examined
    - that we were being wound up by not too clever people or words to that effect.

Mucho apologies Paul for bringing that back up but your post the other night sounded so definitve and assured that I thought good stuff! this is just the redtops at the wind-up and never gave it another thought. Your position on this was so robust that I was glad to have read it.

I hope it still is untrue and the Radio Clyde exclusive is a load of McKinley - that would be a result.

However if KM does indeed confirm his signing to Celtic then he deserves our backing for what he will do for us in the future - not what has gone in the past either with Hibs or the SPL's fourth placed team.

IF he does join up at CP the contribution in the future is all that matters.

It may be a reluctant Hail Hail to him from some of us but he should receive it nonetheless.

Poor excuse! There are only 90 minutes in a game so leaving 20 minutes to go is almost missing a quarter of the game. He does that every week! How many of them are there...

    Kojo,
Granted that Kerrycelt's clue certainly pointed towards "Miller". However, he also stated that we would be "very impressed" with the signing if it came to fruition.
Can't help feeling rather deflated about his signing, not because he is an ex Rangers player but because I don't think that he is any better than what we already have.

Message for WGS, we need to strengthen the defence big time and as soon as possible.

    Devil’s Advocate
When I was in the North stand upper 4 rows from the back I used to leave my seat with 5 minutes to go to sit in the seats nearer the front and the exits so that I didn’t have to wait so long to just get down the stairs to the exit but I always left after the final whistle. This is still something I do in my seat in the Lisbon Lions stand even though the wait isn’t so long there. I am sure people think I’m off out of the ground. Given the time where this guy leaves he has no similar reason.
Devil’s Advocate I have two people who sit in front of me who don’t even stand up when we score a goal and I would love to ask them why the bother to turn up at games but feel there would be no point so I would suggest the same for you they are what they are.

Evil I'll support the team as always.

I can't write what I want to without breaking Paul's rules.

I can't see Kitbag having a rush in the Summer for Miller Jerseys. Perhaps Celtic are thinking way out of the box though. Huey from Fun Lovin Criminals, who professes to be a Celt, advertises MGD. Perhaps Peter Lawell is thinking of a tie in somehow? Kojo?

    I dunno.

Hope the Hungarian is as good as Puskas.

Totally underwhelmed and disappointed in the direction we seem to be heading.

Rangers debt is not £121 Million or even £71 million, at the last look it was circa £25 million.

The real issue surrounding Rangers is their highly unusual accounting policies.

The valuation of Ibrox - this appears to be based on the cost of building a new stadium, rather than what it cost or any reasonable value of the site.

To put that into perspective, it is a bit like Arsenal valueing Highbury at £400 million, because that is what it would cost to build Ashburton Grove.

The logical conclusion is that Murray valued IBROX this way to avoid technical insolvency!!

The second strange accounting policy is to buy shares off of a business partner (NTL) for £1 and immediately revalue them at £15 million.

The logical conclusion is that Murray valued the shares this way to avoid technical insolvency!!

The third strange accounting policy is to move the bond money lent by the fans from debt to assets. On the basis it was unlikely the fans would want their money back. he didn't ask the fans, he didn't write to them and get a waver from them to do this he just did it. Hey presto £8 million debt becomes £8 million assets....a turnaround of £16 million...

The logical conclusion is that Murray did this to avoid technical insolvency!!

Now he has been forced to actually move £50 million of the debt to his parent company, by HBOS, because that way the can get their hands on some saleable assets if it all goes pearshaped..

I believe paul67 is correct in deducing this significantly reduces Murrays ability to buy his way out of trouble.

The other reason we should have a decent advantage in how much our manager has to spend on salaries is simple....we are a significantly larger business....turnover on average is £10 million per annum greater than Rangers....in the same way Hearts and Hibs have greater payroll's than Livingston or Motherwell because they have significantly larger turnovers.

Finally, i think Kenny Miller will be a decent signing and should be afforded the same courtesy as every other celtic signing....i.e. give him a chance and judge him on performances in the hoops.

    Paul,

It looks like Miller's on his way. As has been said on here quite rightly, as soon as he wears the Hoops, we should all get behind him.

Here's hoping the manager turns his attention back to the defense. Can the Hungarian defend?

I doubt that any fans will boo Miller (and I dearly hope I'm right on that one), however the signing may be the one that broke the camels back in terms of our patience with Gordon Strachan. If this doesn't work out I think he's going to land himself in trouble.

I can see the Rangers support singing "Sign Rangers rejects, you only sign Rangers rejects" long and loud. I doubt they will be quaking in fear at a mediocre championship player coming back. Another for the new summer "deadwood" clearance fire-sale? We got rid of MON's deadwood why? For Mr Strachan to simply sign a forest of his own?

I've a problem with a lot of managers. It's like this, you give them, say, £4m to spend. So they use that budget to buy as many players as they can. Lou Macari being a prime example - Wayne Biggins, Muggleton etc...Now WGS seems intent on sqandering our resources in the same way.
Adam Virgo, Jeremie Aliadiere, Du Wei, Camara, Telfer - Asset Management or money down the drain (and our money it was too!)? Add Miller to the list and we've got a considerable wastage. I want quality not quantity

Still I look forward to the reduction in my season ticket, to match our new found aspirations. We sign Hibernian and Dundee Utd players and I want Hibernian and Dundee Utd ticket prices.

EPL? With the current team we'd be relegated by Christmas.

    /p

    BarcaBhoy,

on Rangers debt, while I agree he has balance sheet statements of Ibrox at £121m, the two lines that matter are

creditors due within 1 year £26.220m
    creditors due after 1 year
    £95.521m

he has taken £51m away to MIH so I am struggling to see how you get to £25m of debt.

Oh and don't forget the goodwill!!!

In summary, when playing at a similar level to the SPL, ( the Coca-Cola Championship), he averages 1 goal every other game, not bad at all, that is if your ambition is the Coca-Cola Championship.

Haven't posted in a very long time...so a belated happy hallowe'en to all.
I note that Setanta opens its story on Kenny Miller signing for Celtic with the phrase "Former Rangers flop....." before going on to say that Rangers had been favourites initially to sign him....kind of proves how gratuitous the opening sentence was. Perhaps they can't spell "Terror of the Serie A defensive elite..." or "Rangers fail to sign former Rangers flop". This is by no means the first time Setanta have outdone the Daily Rangers in snide sideswpies at Celtic. I recall they called us cash-strapped (pot and kettle surely) and withdrew it when a lot of us complained. I think I'd prefer them to leavre this one up for Kenny to see ....as an extra incentive (if he actually signs)

    Bhoydell,

There are also moneys due to Rangers in the acounts and over the period they will continue to generate significant income via gate receipts and other trading activities.

I am sure we are not in disagreement that they are financially in a mess, however i would not underestimate Murray's ability to keep his ship afloat, albeit if shipping a bit of water..

He is badly compromised,in comparison to years gone by, no doubt about that. However he still has the support of the vast majority of the media.

So look forward to another round of :
"insert name" rejects celtic to sign for rangers headlines next july...

the question to be asked is who has got the better group of signings so far this year....and that gives an indication of the direction both clubs are going in...

naka, magic, boruc, keane , wilson, plus telfer, camara, du wei and virgo

    against

boyd, hemdani, bernard, murray, rodriquez, fan fan, kyrgiakos, nietto, jeffers and the italian guy who was there for 20 days and left without getting stripped for action...

i think any neutral analysis of those comparative lists wouold come down heavily in our favour.

i see no reason for that trend not to continue in the summer

As you may have gathered from the tone of my post today, I learned of the Kenny Miller signing yesterday afternoon (on the understanding that I kept quiet until the story broke).

I also got a wee bit of perspective on the football reasons behind it, which are explained above.

Been busy all day today, so I’ll comment fully later.

It is a ballsy move by Gordon Strachan.

The proposed signing of Peter Halmosi for £700k has also surprised me. If Caldwell comes in that will take our net spend to over a spectacular £9m.

    Welcome nakagod

    Welcome also first-past-the-post.
