Heart of Midlothian 2-3 Celtic

Scottish Premier League

Sunday 1st January 2006

Match Report by Kano

The game started off in a sprightly fashion with a Hearts free kick being cleared out by McManus, then a bit of a ding dong in the Celtic area.

Celtic had the first real chance on 4 minutes. A good cross from the left by Thompson, which was just too high for Hartson, but Petrov came in behind and had a free header from six yards. Unfortunately he completely missed the target, with the ball going harmlessly over the bar.

Barely enough time had passed for Celtic to say, ’we may pay for that’, before they did.

Hartley made a break on the left leaving Lennon in his wake before playing a good ball low along the six yard line. Jankauskus appeared to prod home, although on replay, it was clearly an own goal, with the ball coming off the chest of Wallace.

Hardly time to draw breath before Hearts were two goals up. A corner from right by Skacel to the back post for Pressley who headed home from 3 yards.

Hearts had their tales up but Celtic had the next couple of chances with a Maloney free kick being deflected into the arms of Gordon off a Hearts head and a good shot from Petrov, after decent play from Wallace on the left, brought out a fine save by Gordon low to his right.

The game was living up to expectations with Hearts rediscovering their belief and a little bit of arrogance as well to go with their silky play.

Elliot did well on the left to get the ball in for, Jankauskus to make Boruc look alert and save well low down.

Straight up the other end and Lennon had a shot for Celtic that went past Gordon's left post.

Hartson then received ball in the penalty area, and while trying to make room for a shot, Maloney looked as if he was going to thump it into the net, but he inexplicably pulled out at the last moment.

Nakamura looked to have a great chance after 37 minutes, but he was pushed wide and his attempted cross was mopped up.

It certainly was not all Celtic with Hearts being the far more dominant and threatening team.

A minute later, Hearts made a break down the right with Cesnauskus almost through, only to be brought down by Balde, who duly went into the book.

Then McManus got the joke booking from referee Ian Brines for a perfectly good challenge which should have led to a Celtic throw, but instead gave Hearts another free kick in a dangerous position.

Hearts turn again, and an excellent move led to Skacel dancing through and belting a shot which Boruc did extremely well to make himself huge and block.

Half time Heart of Midlothian 2 Celtic 0

Five minutes into the second half Nakamura a ball through to played Petrov on the penalty arc. The Bulgarian pulled a hamstring and was replaced by Stephen Pearson.

Eventually the Celtic breakthrough came after 55 minutes. A good cross in from the left from Maloney and there was young Pearson on hand to volley in from 4 yards.

Maloney once again had strong appeals for a penalty turned down when he was taken down in the area.

Sixty two minutes in and Thompson lost possession on the edge of the area which led to Elliot playing a dangerous low cross across the face of the goal, but thankfully there was no takers from Hearts. This was Thompson's last part in the game as he was immediately substituted for McGeady.

Celtic produced their best attacking move of the game when Nakamura, Telfer and Hartson all combining in a fluent one-touch move which saw Nakamura's shot very well saved by Gordon. Pearson followed up, forcing a save from Gordon only for Maloney to ram home the rebound. A few seconds of joy for the Celtic fans was punctured by the assistant referee’s offside flag.

After 76 minutes Celtic broke quickly down the left with Wallace and Mcgeady releasing Maloney who was taken down on the edge of the box by Fyssas.

It was not the worst challenge I have ever seen, but he was the last man and off he went. There was a bit of ‘argy-bargy’ with the Hearts players and the referee, which resulted in another yellow for Neilson.

With 2 minutes to go, Telfer was fouled unnecessarily on the right. Nakamura produced a superb in-swinging cross for McManus to bullet home a header from six yards. Pandemonium erupted as Celtic looked to have saved a point.

Three minutes later, Nakamura was pushed in just about the same spot as his free kick for the goal. He produced a similar delivery, the ball ricocheted to McManus who coolly angled the ball back across his body and inside the post to win the game for Celtic.

Goals: Jankauskas 6, Pressley 8.

Celtic: Boruc, Telfer, Balde, McManus, Wallace, Petrov (Pearson 50), Lennon, Nakamura, Thompson (McGeady 62), Hartson, Maloney. Subs not used Marshall, Lawson, Virgo, Du Wei, Camara.

Kingoh, from previous thread: availability of tickets for Japanese fans probably = evidence of very astute marketing by CFC. No point in trying to broaden appeal of club overseas if target market fans can never get tickets, eh?

Watching the match on tv it seemed to me that the Hearts support did not give Neil Lennon his usual quota of abuse? Perhaps somebody who was at the game might confirm. When Keane arrives and McGeady and Lennon also play they will be spoilt for choice

I honestly thought at half-time we were done, i sank even lower when Stan went off. The addition of Pearson and McGeady brought a revival i did not expect. If Pearson can stay injury free i think he deserves a chance to prove himself. And what a finish from a centre half.
    Reminded me of Hanpden 1988.

Kayeff, the match report came from Kano.

My thoughts on the Hartley kick – this might be a wee bit off message…

It was a terrible kick on a smaller, younger, lighter man, but I have a wee feeling Ross gave him some attention a few seconds earlier.

I am a very levelheaded person, but in the three seconds after I have been kicked on a football field, I have reacted out of character, leaving me literally thinking, ‘What happened there’.

It is a mans game, lets deal with it.

CoatbridgeDemocraticRepublic, "UDI in 2006", like it.

    1 x bet on McManus to score anytime @ 10/1 = £1

    1 x bet on 2-3 scorline @ 28/1 = £0.50

    1 x bet on Celtic to win, when 2-0 down @ 7/1 = £1

3 x various other bets to "keep it interesting" = £2.50

    Hangover = £75

Celtic coming back from the dead to beat the 2nd force in Scottish football in their own midden = priceless!

It seems my new year day was made by carlsberg! Perfect hangover cure that was today! I felt terible, honestly, ill. When it was 3-2? miraculous recovery, I recomend it to anyone! (ps winnings of circa £35 also helped!!)

    Happy new year to all!

    Thanks for your comment Paul.

Even if Wallace had a niggle at him there is no excuse for his reaction. These things happen all over the park in every game and especially at todays, but I don't recall very often to seeing such an assault on a player.
Maybe Ross had taken his pretend cigar off him an he was asking for it back, but it does not excuse it.

BennyBhoy, the Fanfan story was acquired on on the understanding that it would not be used.

However, with the guy leaving, I don't think it matters anymore - and I am bursting to let it out.

Technically Paul is right about the Hartley swipe. It was nothing compared to the kick in the grion area Herts had just taken. If Wallace is not seriously injured lets get on with it.

More serious issue would be - is there an embargo on Celtic penalties? Four stonewallers v. Dunfermline(h), Livi(h) and 2 today all in the past 5 weeks not given. McVicar explanation please.

If WGS can come up with a decent left back in the "window" it would make the run in that little bit easier!

Yes Paul,it is a man's game and I do sometimes bemoan the fact that there are far too many free kicks given for hard but fair tackling but Hartley's kick on young Wallace was nothing to do with it being a man's game.It was premeditated thuggery by someone who always runs about snarling when he plays us.
The man is a disgrace and should be excommunicated from any association with this club forthwith whether as a player or supporter.Supporter?-Hah.

I see that Craig Gordon managed to make it into the Celtic penalty box at the end of this match. I seem to remember... No doubt he will secure his move to the south side of Glasgow in due course.

Does anyone else recall Jock Brown (full of glee) reminding everyone during the game that Celtic on nine previous occasions this century have failed to over-turn a two goal defecit at half time? Well, Jock, that performance was just for you and is a timely reminder that nothing lasts forever (including, hopefully, your continued tenure in the Setanta commentary box).

  • At 01/01/06 23:28, Blogger Alabama Celt said…

That was fantastic. Really enjoyed that win as much as any this season. Especially after seeing the Hearts fans reaction to our support when they went 2-up. They looked like they had won the league. Also, Hately and Brown's stunned silence was certainly golden.

Regarding Hartley's kick on Wallace it should be noted that it happened in our box and the ball was out on the wing, nowhere near the incident. His frustration coming to the fore.

I didn't think that Fyssas deserved to go as it looked like there was no contact with Maloney. The young Elliot guy looked really good for Hearts. Celtic's defence is pushing it these days. Certainly a lot of work still to be done. I guess Du Wei will start next week. Gord also said post match that Pearson will start against Clyde.

Happy New Year and Hail Hail y'all!!!

    Paul67,

We should all appreciate hearing more about Fanfan, without your breaking your commitments to others; may I suggest:

The name Walter Plinge is used in London theatre when a part has not been cast, an actor is playing two parts or an actor does not want his or her name in the programme. Plinge was supposedly a real London pub owner, honoured by a group of actors with the borrowing of his name.

    From Wikipedia

    Hope that helps.

Stevie21 from previous thread, and various others, all seem a wee bit squeamish about the physical aspect of the game. 'Doing' opponents has been a part of football since the game began - if your opponent is too tricky for you kick him into the stand - test his courage - it is the referees job to stop you if you go too far.
These things happen all the time in every game. Even the Hartley incident is part of it - he tried it on and got away with it - although I'm sure he will be done by the SFA. Next time we play them either Lennon or Keane should, and probably will go looking for him.

ant1973....I was at the game and didn't hear Brown's comment about us not retrieving 2 goal half -time deficit's. Maybe we haven't recovered from being 2 down at HT however, off the top of my head, I remember us being 2-0 and 3-1 down to Hearts at Tynecastle in the 76/77 season,we won 4-3.Ronnie Glavin scored the winner just before time up. I also recall being at two other games where we 2-0 down to them at Celtic Park.In 1970 with Harry Hood scoring the winner in a 3-2 victory. In fact a week later v Waterford at Celtic Park,in the European Cup, we also went 2-0 down and came back to win 3-2!. In 84/85 we came back to win 3-2 with Brian McClair scoring late on. Nothing changes eh? Brilliant!

Hello all, I've not posted for a while, as I would only be echoing the points of others.
Today was indeed ajoyous occassion but I think there's a bit of daftness in the air regarding Hartley.
He is a sertious proffessional playing for a club who are trying to beat us to the title, after an incredible start his dreams were cruelly crushed by the great and mighty 'tic. He lashed out in a moment of madness, he's only human and I think you're over reacting!
Before crying for an inquest I suggest you watch again the kick administered by Lennon on Pressley (the imposter), I for one very much enjoyed it!
It is a man's game and people hack from time to time, I think the time to be appalled is when players try to break legs, stamp on people on the ground and all the other tricks employed by Alex Rae!
Let's all move on and have a great title winning 2006!
    Hail Hail!

I have risked eternal damnation and visited the FF blue room and they are treating Hartley as a hero for kicking the "timmy taig".
I think the force used by Hartley on the fixed legs of Wallace could have had serious consequences.

Pauls view in the Hartley incident "its a mans game" could not disagree with you more. Hartley should have the book thrown at him for that piece of thuggery, and thats what it was THUGGERY. To do what he did from behind when the opponent was looking the other way is COWARDICE and THUGGERY nothing more nothing less. That wee git should never be considered to play for the Celtic, the fans now I believe would not accept him. Celltic showed the jam farts today who was the daddy. Nonethless still a work in progress.

Let's not let frustration be put forward as an excuse.
Hartley's behaviour when they were ahead was just as bad.
Pressley deserves all he gets, although Lenny should pay for the mistake of getting caught.
Rosco is the last guy on the park who should be subjected to that treatment.

I just watched the 2nd half again. Wallace blocked off Hartley's run into the box - a pretty solid block, too from the weeman. Hartley retaliated.

I honestly think we are over reacting to this issue. People get blocked, pulled, and yes, booted during competitive games. If the ref had seen it, he'd have carded Hartley. He didn't, as was the case with Lennon. I'd leave it be, rather than have Lennon suspended also.

Having said that, I do understand that had it been Lennon who behaved like Hartley today - moaning, dissenting, chasing linesmen, trying to get fellow pros sent off - Lenny would be getting hung right now.

    Anyway...we won!!

WHAT A WAY TO START THE YEAR!!!

Great result, enjoying the posts tonight. The strachanator going mental with the 3rd goal was great BUT my moment of the match was when Boruc put on the hearts scarf truely a brill moment!

Hartleys no daft he was winding up the celtic fans when they went up 2-0 and his kick on wallace was just his anger at losing the match. Wallace is a BOY he will get tackled, pushed about and hacked in the general play but he isnt expected to get booted from behind away from play.

Today we were against bigger stronger players and in many ways they did out weight us in different parts of play but i have to give a big shout out to BIG BAD JOHN HARTSON who i thought was great today. Now that the dust has settled and I've had time to sleep on it, a few thoughts as follows.

Hartley, a cowardly deliberate act of thuggery which could have caused a very serious injury. Not the only thuggish act by him in the game.He clogged McManus also and again got away with it.

His gestures to the Celtic fans, his aggression towards the linesman and the ref would have been front page headlines if done by Lennon, Keane etc.( Traynor didn't even mention the assault on Wallace.)

I agree its a mans game but lets not use this an an excuse for a violent assault on a young player which if committed on the street would have had Hartley spending the night in the cells( and perhaps then some!)This could also have started some very serious crowd trouble.

I hope the SPL and his club really throw the book at Hartley as he deserves nothing less.

Paul67 Happy New Year- If you have anyone’s ear. This service should be supported 24x7. Well annoyed right now. Being out of the time zone I guess that is my problem. I will stay up till one tonight so I can speak to some one 9.00am GMT if it is not a holiday.

Amateur with a capital A. I will be asking for a reduced rate this month since I could not view when I wanted too and they only support it when they feel like it.

Paul67 not to make my problem yours. However this is a real weakness if we are aspiring to go global and for this to be a primary communication channel.

Email only for tech support!!!!!!! This is the only 9-5 wanna be world wide organization I have ever come accross I guess the Celtic movement is only during office hours. Sorry for the rant, but this was my ISP or Cable Co - I would have this sorted in 30 secs. If I could not get someone on the blower or get adequate support.....I would cancel on the spot. This is what I will be telling the General Office tomorrow, or when they are in.

Regarding the Hartley foul on Wallace: the interesting aspect for me was he deliberately traded away a chance to get on the end of a cross into the box to chop down Wallace. This was a selfish act of retaliation and could have had team consequences.Says a lot about his character. Its a bigger issue for Hearts to deal with than Celtic.

    Afternoon paul,fellow tims and Edward

    SanFran_Tic.

Can see your point if you don't get the game, but before going off the boil,I would check where the fault is.
Have had the service since it's first season and I can honestly say I have probably only missed about three games due to problems with the service itself.
There has also been the odd occasion when the links on the page haven't worked, but these have been fixed pretty quickly.
Don't know what sort of coverage you receive on your TV,cable, sattelite or free to air.But we receive a big fat NIL.
Only possibility of seeing the game is to go to the CSC in the middle of town.
Now I know it does have problems, but the service is a godsend for those of us who cannot get to where the games are being shown.
It is early days yet for Netstreaming technology, and I really don't think that the subscriber levels dictate that there should be a manned office 24-7.
This may well come in the future, but at the mean time I think the club should be applauded for being at the forefront of at least trying to come to grips with it.
It is damned frustrating when you cannot see the game.I know. But,I prefer to take it over the average, and when I do that,I am really pleased I have the service.

Oh yeah this is my 3rd email to webhelp@celticfc.com. Hopefully I will get a response this time. 3rd time lucky perhaps?
Paul67 some people may find this a pedantic and petty exercise. However, to me success on the park will be aided greatly if can get it right on the business field too.
We need world class macro and micro business appreciation and know-how (for tactical implementation).
A World Class Front and Back office will allow us to maximize our upside potential and create the best possible environment for us to succeed on the park.

I used World Class several times in this note for a reason. I don’t know what the antithesis of World Class is……(parochialy poor perhaps) but we are nowhere near it? We have been diabolical in almost every commercial interaction I have ever had with Celtic FC PLC. Shocking…..

I think the Back and Front office staff should appreciate that they are as important to the success of Celtic as the playing staff. This should be understood, by the stewards of the club, and staffed and managed appropriately.

What happens when we have Japan and China on-line? Thankfully our customer base does not switch to other competitors. BUT THEY WILL CANCEL OR NOT TAKE UP FURTHER OFFERINGS.

Hartley has rightly taken stick for yesterday but what about Webster?
He threw himself to the ground as BBJ went for a high ball and from my position no contact was made.
He then spent the next few minutes gesturing the BBJ had elbowed him.
BBJ did well not to lamp him when he eventually got up.
Our friends from the East were going down at every opportunity which was a surprise given the comments about adopting a robust approach.
This approach obviously only applied to tackles they made.
Another plus point from yesterday is that we have been involved in the 2 best games of the season.
One game was a proper football match against Hibs. Yesterday after a bad start we got to grips with the physical nature of the game.
Our ball players had to be brave when the tackles were going in.

SFT you'll probably get John Cole who is a really nice guy but won't be able you too much technically.

The problem lies in the fact that they just don't have the equipment or the budget to acquire it(yet).

They don't have the Overseas partners or the enthusiasm or will to develop them or franchise them and set up real time quality streaming of the Celtic media product.

They are still amateurs in the nicest possible sense and as a result they have lost a considerable number of subscribers. No way can they compete against Setanta in the USA or Australasia.Channel 67 is a great idea and that is all. Fact.

SanFran Tic, C67 is key to the future strategy. I will pass on your concerns. I believe they have recently outsourced the C67 service and are still dealing with the early issues.

In terms of the service from staff, it is my opinion that Celtic is understaffed. Numbers have shrunk as a result of pressure in recent years to find more cash for the first team while the company continued to lose money.

Some of the foot-soldiers put in an enormous amount of unpaid hours, unseen by the powers at the top, or the fans. What you are experiencing is the sharp end of back office downsizing.

Hope the flooding left your home in good nick.

It seems that we only won due to the sending off and a soft free kick for the winner.

lostrambling- totally predictable from the Herald- was Mark Wilson the reporter by any chance?

The maloney penalty was an absolute stonewaller (not so sure about the handball one).

And the galling thing is that Lennon was dragged over hot coals by Traynor, the SFA etc for very little compared to what Hartley, Neilson, and Presley were up to yesterday. But because all these bozos are Scottish, nothing will happen.

    Just like Lenny predicted.

Is there any ground for these comments?
I did not watch the game, and haven't seen any highlights.

Having trawled all the reports this morning The Herald is not the only offender. How about this little quote from Ewan Murray in the Guardian

'Strachan has won praise for turning round Celtic from apparent no-hopers to odds-on favourites for the title, but his weekly sideshow with a fourth official is becoming tiresome, particularly on days like this. Unnecessary, too, were the childish antics of the Celtic club captain Neil Lennon, who almost prompted a riot with his full-time gestures to the home support'

    Can you believe it ???

No mention of Hartley's antics, Webster's faking or the Hearts teams continual harrassment of the referee.

Also although Hearts are quite rightly winning praise for their first half display, we seem to be receiving scant praise for our second half revival. 2 soft free kicks following Hearts going wrongly down to 10 men does not do us justice.

We played some terrific football in the 2nd half irrespective of the sending off. I counted 7 or 8 very good chances not including the penalty claim. Naka and Pearson were different class in the last half hour.

Oh and by the way we were denied two stonewall penalties the referee's a mason and Rangers of course are now suddenly producing the basis of Scotland's new international side so things are pretty much as always. Happy New Year to all even those with blinkers on:>)

Glad you posted the two articles giving some of the historical perspectives of bigotry n Edinburgh.

Not too sure on the link with Scottish football in the terms you described.

John Cormack was an Edinburgh man and though I am unaware of the team he supported it could be said to more likely be Hearts rather than Rangers.

I'm also not sure about the idea of Rangers being the establishment team in Scotland. I'm not sure whether this term means the team of the establishment whereby establishment means the aristocracy/ruling class or the Scottish club in which is part of the establishment within the authorties of Scottish football.

By linking the John Cormack article to Rangers as the establishment team you seem to be suggesting a link but the Establishment in Edinburgh or Perthshire or Deeside are more likely to be rugby or cricket fans. I'm not sure that Rangers woud be their team at all.

In recent years it has become interesting with Dvaid Murray and his links into Edinburgh's financial "establishment" but any backers for Rangers have been new money rather than established/old money.

The second link to the Kikintilloch disaster again is welcome and it is an open verdict as to whether it was neglect or an attack that killed the Irish "tattie howkers".

But I see no link of meaningful substance between that and arguments against signing Kevin Kilbane. Just to note that one of the articles mentioned that Celtic gave a donation and organised a collection for the fund that was organised by the local authority and others.

To get onto football in Scotland, I'm not sure about Kevin Kilbane. Isn't this a bit of asset management and the New Lamps For Old philosophy. Going by his stats on the Everton site I would say he is a less effective player than Alan Thompson and of course he is less expensive in wages.

He seems to have pace which might suit Gordon's approach to the game but he does not score a lot of goals whereas Alan Thompson has scored important goals in big games for Celtic.

Hope I've not picked you up wrongly here.

Just another couple of points of interest re John Cormack article. I would suppose that Paolo DiCanio would be more supportive of Oswald Mosley's type of Fascism than John Cormack's, wouldn't he?

Secondly there is a reference to bigoted attitudes within the Catholic Church, this was partly to do with the church's hierarchy being tied into Scottiah aristocracy for a couple of hundred years after the Reformation. It was only towards the end of the 20th century that Scots from Irish descent reached the top positions within the Church. Celtic Football Club was an exception to this exclusion of matters Irish and involved positive celebration of being Irish and aligned also to the Church. As well as Brother Walfrid another key backer to early Celtic was the Archbishop of Glasgow.

    Morning BHOYS:

The buzz word for yesterday was CONFIDENCE.

Thanks to all who helped me see the match.

Football is a mans game....it most certainly is Paul, and when as with professional footballers your blood pressure is through the roof, you are liable to do anything in the heat off the moment.

Remember Tommy Gemmels kick from behind on a Racing club player!

I shouted long and hard to get Hartley in at the start off the season.
Nothing has changed my mind.He would be an excellent player for us!

I watched Setanta for the first time yesterday and you are right bhoys joke and company are a joke.

However, both commentators did call the handball and Maloney penalties.

WGS was quoted recently as saying Pearson was running about at training like a madman.
This bhoy now deserves a chance to show what he can do.

Our defence was torn to pieces by centre backs having to cover the channels .
Our fullbacks were hopelessly outpaced on a number off occasions,so with Bobo away and Stan injured now is the time to start Virgo at RB Du wei at CB and Roy Keane and Pearson in the Middle.

    One happy bhoy

    Big Joe,

I agree that "that's football" regards Hartley however, I can assure you that your reference to Roy Keane is way off. He is indeed "no angel" but he would never lash out with an unprovoked attack on a player like that, never, and to my knowledge (limited though it may be) never has. His "attacks" are not frustrational in nature.

Here's to Roy: may all your tackles be clean and purposeful and of course winning.

    Hail Hail

PS Happy New Year to Big Joe and family :-)))

maybe not "persecution" today but the "what school" shyte still goes on - oh yes it does - and there have been a few sectarian deaths in recent years have there not

Celtic midfielder Stilian Petrov is set to be sidelined for three weeks with his hamstring problem.
The Bulgarian international picked up the injury in last weekend's dramatic win over Hearts.
Petrov limped off with the problem and Bhoys boss Gordon Strachan does not expect to see the player back in action for three weeks at least.
"It's never good losing a player like Stan, but hopefully the rest will do him good," Strachan told the club's official website.
"If you're asking for a timeframe, although it's difficult to say at the moment, I'd say we're probably looking at him being out for about three weeks.
"I think it's probably fair to say that he hasn't been as dynamic for us over recent games and, if you look at his performances, I think there's a lot there to suggest that his body has been getting tired.
"When you look at the games he's played, it's no real surprise.
"He's not missed many matches for club or country over the last couple of years and, when you look back to those games he travelled to America for recently with Bulgaria, maybe it's just all beginning to catch up with him now."
