Keane gives the lessons before learning one

Even Artur Boruc has a limit on how many penalty kicks and gilt-edged chances he will save before he is affected by the communal shakes on display in front of him.

Stephen McManus made up for a rash challenge in the first half, which resulted in a penalty, to score a good old-fashioned poachers goal in the second half.

His three goals in 2006 not only makes him Celtics top scorer this year, they have made a profound impact on the title race. Before he scored Celtics third on Saturday, the outcome was far from secure. Add this to his double on New Years Day, and McManus can take credit for an eight-point swing over Hearts.

I have been asking for a football-playing centre half for as long as I have been writing Celtic Quick News, and Roy Keane delivered on Saturday. He instructed his goalkeeper and fellow defenders throughout the game always looked to play the telling pass.

His most profound impact on the game though, was being dispossessed at the second Kilmarnock goal.

Keane picked the ball up on the touchline, and ran into his own penalty area before turning into a Kilmarnock player who was stronger in the tackle. Kilmarnock scored three seconds later.

Bobo Balde made the same mistake against Livingston on Boxing Day; underestimating an opponent inside your own penalty box, with exactly the same result.

The Scottish Premier League might not be able to boast many players with Keane’s ability, but most teams have nippy forwards who have no respect for reputation. I am sure Roy Keane would have cleared the ball into the stands at most Premiership grounds, and do not believe he will make the same mistake again.

Paul Telfer has not set the heather alight at Celtic, but he is nothing if not consistent. I am unsure if the impending arrival of Mark Wilson had any impact on him on Saturday, but his mind did not seem to be focussed on the job. Twice he headed infield and put his team-mates under pressure.

Interestingly, Gary Caldwell, another unsettled player, made a similar mistake to the one Roy Keane made on Saturday, playing the ball from touchline to his own penalty box, though his general play was good.

A defence with Wilson, Keane and Caldwell would tighten things up considerably.

I'd still play Camara at left-back until a viable alternative comes up. I'd seriously doubt that young Wallace will play left-back at ibrox. I think telfers days are numbered. Interesting to see who will take McManus place , Surely Virgo?

Next objective for the Celtic team must be a clean sheet.

Excellent article but to parapharse yourself from the previous blog:

Anyone who believes that Celtic intend to play Roy Keane anywhere but midfield needs their heads examined.

I didn't want this lost at the tail of the previous post....it is worth noting as we lurch from crisis to crisis at Celtic, as the tired, old, predictable and withering media methods would have us believe.....reminder that the crisis lies elsewhere....and will for some time....

Does anyone know when Rangers will get their £10million (copyright Johnstone, Young, Cameron, Jackson, Broadfoot, Leggat in times of immediate crisis) cash injection to buy players?

Did they not say it was for the January transfer window?

Did HE (trumpet blasts and regal music) not say McLeish would get funds to strengthen in January?) Or was Kris Boyd the strengthening he was talking about??

I was SO looking forward to making the comparisons...with the August transfer window.....

    Jeffers.....gone
Manieri.....gone (did he trap at all?)
    FanFan......gone yet?
    Rodriguez...anyone?
    Hemdami.....anyone?
    Bernard.....someone?
    Nieto (Batistuta)....gone.

Please don't tell me the £10million will be kept until February for the next manager in the summer? Please.....

Did he actually sign ANYONE in the summer who turned out to be a success?????

.....does Ian Murray count??? Na. Didn't think so.

    Porkies anyone?

It is clear that teams are targeting Wallace. Jankauskas of Hearts repeatedly drifted over to his flank, looking to get on the end of crosses, and Kilmarnock immediately looked for Danny Invincibile the second Keane gave away possession. Yes, wee Ross is exciting going forward, but we really need to come up with a way of getting some more clean sheets.
Virgo and Keane in the middle and McManus at left back would certainly give us plenty of strength and aerial power. The lack of attacking flair may be a concern, but I think Strachan would dearly love to grind out a workmanlike 2-0 any time soon.
Incidentally, how lucky were Rangers today?
And did Kris Boyd actually get a kick of the ball? He looked distinctly average.

Perhaps Telfer has been worried about these additional players arriving all year but the debacle of Clyde has certainly made things more dire at the back. when we were beating the hun they were concerned about righting their ship and the defensive frailties of our club were put on the back burner. I welcome Mark Wilson and Gary Caldwell and the experiment of Mssrs. Telfer and Camara/Wallace can end. I believe this will help immensely...Bobo does not seem all that bad right now...I can't believe I said that.

if wilson and caldwell arrive they will bolster our options at the back along with keane.

i too think keane is learning as he plays.

i think he'll take a week or two more to adapt to his surroundings and we'll then see a difference.

    midfield or defence? you decide.
what i do know is we have signed a good bosman!

Personally I think that Ross will not only make it as a full back (in the Gordon Strachan way) but that he has already been highly successful.

We tend to look at full backs when they are under pressure, i.e. when the ball is knocked down the inside our outside channels or possibly over the heads forcing them to turn;and to be honest Clyde exposed us very badly in those exact areas!

But hold on a second, just watch Ross preventing numerous attacks even seeing the light of day because he presses players, presses the ball, and gives us marvellous attacking options as he supports Aiden, Shaun, or Maciej!

Watch the number of times he either picks the ball up on the half-way line, prevents a preferred pass out of the opposition's defence, or plays quick one two wall passes out of our own defence to start another attack.

    Lacks height- Most definitely.

But the pluses exceed the minuses most definitely.

For instance, remember Capuco bambooziling Joos (no slouch himself but good in the air), Ross would have put him in his admittedly very small pocket and suggested he come back when he could raise a sprint!

    Keep the real faith

    Whitedoghunch,

Agree - but at this point in the war against lazy and/or agenda-driven journalism it is worth ensuring their message is furthered when that message is total garbage. Sometimes it takes a little time to elapse before it can be highlighted as garbage (ref Miller, K.) - as there are still plenty Celtic fans out there who swallow the headline bait and have yet to twig. CQN can help get this message further across the Celtic domain and doing so without links avoids web hits and $$$ to them.

The more who recognise the trends this time and next time, the more who will see it for what it is the time after that. Rome wasn't built in a day.

    109steps,

A full back is first and foremost a DEFENDER. Ross has great talent, it's just that none of that talent is in defending. He concedes too many crosses, is weak in the tackle and cannot defend the back post. Lovely guy, has a role to play, but not where he is being played.

You will be 10009 steps and I will be U222 before Ross can fulfill that dfensive role I'm afraid.

Some of the forward play on Saturday was sublime. Through balls that nullified the defense and some of the forward runs where just what the doctor ordered.

[talking of doctors..I have my ultrasound on Wednesday]

Lately I have been at ease with BBJ but during the match I found myself swearing long and hard as he bollux'd up yet another attack. The man is nothing if not consistantly an enigma.

Maloney and Wallace worked very well together but still only made up 75% of what should have been. By that I mean a left back and a left mid not some hybrid of the two.

And let's not forget the defense playing passy in the six yard box when they should have been booting the ball up the park. Someone really needs to sit these guys down and explain the basics of defense....Safety first!

    Still, a very entertaining game.

And finally, to all you guys who leave early...WHY?

It was the same at the Hearts game. A cracking game being played to the death and people start leaving. I sit at the end of a row so it is particulary irritating for me.

Next season I'm going to get a seat, hopefully, near the middle of a row. That's if my 'lump' disnae turn out to be cancer and I'm dead by then. Still, death will spare me the Wallace experiment. So it has some benefits.;-)

Paul, agree with you regarding Keane's performance Saturday.Apart from his mistake,he organized the defence well and his distribution was quick and accurate.I wouldn't see it as a long term solution, but as we are in a needs must situation,he is ideal at the moment. If he can get a hold of Bobo and get him doing what he is good at i.e. defending,we should be solid enough for the time being. This might allow Lennon to stop having to come back to the 18yrd line to pick the ball up,giving us a better all round shape.
Having said that I still think we badly need a ball playing centre-half and the main priority, two full-backs.
109 steps,I totally agree with you we do tend to look at our full backs when they are under pressure, well I do anyway.I want to know that when the ball goes down the channels, over their heads forcing them to turn, that they can do what they are there for, defend and be able to handle the situation.Unfortunately for Wallace he cant,I think as you say he is marvellous going forward, but he will never IMO be a full-back as long as he has got the provebial hole in his erse.I dont expect we will agree on this one and I respect your right to your opinion, but I cant see him being a left-back if he lives till he's a hundred.yours John-b.

Come on lads. Let's get off Telfer's back. He was an emergency signing and at the moment we have no better choice as an out and out full back.
Mark Wilson may be the one who fills this gap, should we sign him this window.

However, I think signing Caldwell would be an unnecessary knee jerk reaction. McManus' form has deteriorated recently but what player having his first real lengthy run in a team would not suffer a dip in form?

Give him the chance to benefit from the presence of RK.

Winning 10 games from the last 16 will almost certainly guarantee CL qualification especially if we win at Ibrox. 12 wins will probably mean winning the SPL if these include wins against Rangers and Hearts.

In light of that, BB's return from the ANC, RK's relative comfort at Centre Back and the availability of Virgo we should tighten our purse strings and keep the money for a proven CL class CH in the summer window.

    All,

Time for lights out in the 109steps household.

Can I just say a couple of things regarding our wee friend Ross.

Firstly he is still learning and as the team developes in parallel I believe that he he will colour in the blank areas of his abilities.

Secondly and finally, a friend of mine acquired a wee book yesterday for me, from the book shop in the St Enoch centre, for the princely sum of two quid.

    It is called

Celtic - the top 11 of everything Bhoyish!

It is a cracking wee reference book, for instance did you know that an anagram of Chris Sutton is 'Ostrich Nuts'!

Anyway there are also the 11 greatest quotes from the incomparable Jock Stein!

While it is obviously simplistic I like the one that goes

'the best place to defend is in the other team's penalty box'.

Get the wee book it is magic!

Goodnight and best wishes to Tom64.

From Skyt Sports so it must be true :)

Celtic are understood to have made a move for Hungarian winger Peter Halmosi.

The 26-year-old left winger has revealed that he has travelled to Glasgow to have a medical and discuss terms with The Bhoys.

"I want to emphasise that it's not a trial, I will attend a medical examination and a physical test," Halmosi told Hungarian website NB1.

Halmosi, currently with Debrecen, almost joined Everton in the summer and was linked with a number of Premiership clubs last month.

Now Celtic look set to step in and take him to the SPL.

"When my agents were speaking with me about the possibility, I couldn't even understand immediately how big an opportunity it is," he continued.

"I like taking risks so of course I decided to go and try.

"I don't think that I'm pompous but I consider myself so good enough to meet the requirements at a team like Celtic."

Reports in Hungary report that Celtic boss Gordon Strachan contacted his mentor Sir Alex Ferguson to check on Halmosi - as United played against Debrecen in a UEFA Champions League qualifier last year.

Did you get that 5 foot 8 figure from the official club website. Having gone through their stats of player height and weight, I have to think that they are hardly 100% accurate. Wallace is no bigger than 5 foot 6, and to say John Hartson is less than 18 stone is laughable...

Brass neck award for 2006 has just been won by Michael Kelly. He has a letter in today’s Herald in which he states the reason for Celtic being on the receiving end of cup defeats by lower league teams is because the club was taken out of the control families who were supporters ‘first, last and all the time.’ No mention of the fact that these families had run the club into the ground and almost out of existence.

Does this guy still attend Celtic games?

I'd never buy any player on the basis of 1 game but Vitaly Kutuzov with Belrus gave the Scotland defence a stack of problems.

26 years old currently with AC Milan but as is common with them he has been "loaned" for a few seasons....wonder if they would loan him in our direction.

Scored a good goal, but did miss several other very good chances I must admit.

However I am sure the Euro Scouting team will turn up a player of better overall standard.

If the Peter Halmosi deal is correct as per Sky..it's interesting that despite all the newspapers sources / the various Celtic website insiders...NOT ONE had any word on this guy ???

Maybe Celtic are keeping things really close - which is the way it should be.

Mark Wilson is 5ft 11in according to them.

Re whitedoghunch 9.19, I also wrote to the Herald informing them I would no longer be buying their newspaper, here is the reply I got. A couple of quotes from it are `I guess if both sides are annoyed we are doing something right` and ` If he`s good enough to appear in the high court he`s good enough to appear in the Herald` That makes it alright then?

    Dear Reader

I refer to your letter regarding Donald Findlay, QC, who this week began writing a column for our sports pages. I must disagree with any suggestion that this affects the balance of our sports coverage. I believe our readers are intelligent and open-minded enough to recognise this. Everybody knows Donald is a Rangers fan so can read his column with that prior knowledge - the same cannot be said for columnists in some other newspapers who present themselves as neutral observers but are, in fact, supporters of a particular team.

I acknowledge that Donald once did a stupid thing, for which he was punished. How many other men in the West of Scotland have done the same thing without getting caught? Quite a few, I'd guess. I do not believe they are all bigots, just people who fail to seriously consider the implications of the songs - even if they are educated enough to know better. If anything, Donald Findlay's 1999 mistake, and the debate which followed it, have gone some way to change that kind of unthinking behaviour by otherwise decent people.

Before signing Donald I spoke to a number of Celtic fans, mainly lawyers who know him well, and they assured me that his passion for Rangers did not mean he was an anti-Catholic bigot. Having met the man, I find him a likeable and honest individual. For the record, I come from a Roman Catholic background myself and know what it is like to be on the receiving end of sectarian abuse. I do not think the solution to sectarianism is to demonise people. It's about saying sorry and moving on. That's why the peace process in Northern Ireland has made some progress, for example. It's when they start calling each other names and dragging up historical grievances that things begin to stall.

The Herald has excellent staff sports writers who will continue to do a great job for us, both in terms of analysis, comment and straightforward match reports. Our chief football/sports writer remains Graham Spiers who has been the subject of (totally unjustified) criticism from some supporters on the other side of the Old Firm fan base for speaking out against sectarianism among some Rangers fans. I guess if both sides are annoyed, we are doing something right.

Newspapers should be provocative and lively. That's why we signed Donald. He is an eloquent man and a leading QC - if he is good enough to appear in the high court, he is good enough to appear in the pages of The Herald. We remain totally fair and impartial in our news and sports news coverage. We continue to oppose sectarianism and will speak out against it in our leader columns, as we have done to date. Will certainly will not print any writing we regard as sectarian - though I cannot imagine any contributor, including Donald, producing that sort of piece. I would urge you to read our extensive Monday sports coverage as a whole and then make up your own mind. Do you really think there is another paper in Scotland with better coverage?

    Yours sincerely

    Acting editor

This is the third straight year of losses, cumulative ₤21.6m (€31.3m) & they are looking at selling the stadium. Chairman Rob Westerhof commented ‘The three clubs that drive the Dutch football economy (Ajax, Feyenoord & PSV) should get more of the TV money ……’. They expect a better financial result in season 05-06 because they plan to sell their car park. Guus Hiddink was reported to be 'shocked' at the size of the loss given their very successful campaign last season (Rory wears clogs too).

Fat Celtic player debate reminded me of 2 guys I had almost completely forgotten about. (oh, Lex Baillie was a big lad).

109 steps, I agree, I think wee Ross could make it as left back, though more more probably a left wing back in a 3-5-2, but WGS is a stickler for 4-4-2. Was jackie better in the air than i can remember or did we spend so much time in the oppostion half they couldn't target his lack of height?

U2, on the rangers spend, he also insisted there would be a mystery donor who would be giving £10m , i think, exclusively for transfers. This donor was due to appear 3 weeks ago (old Sean and Tom Hunter came to mind).

    ....still waiting.

Well done for calling the Herald on this.
The letter from Mrs McAlpine made me smile. It tries to start/perpetuate the myth that Findlay made one mistake, and only once.
No, madam, he was caught on film once, and that is a whole nuther thing.

My real problem with Findlay goes back to the murder of Mark Scott - a young boy murdered for being a Celtic supporter.

The brutal act itself was sickening. The following actions of the Rangers vice-chairman (Findlay) were as shocking as they were baffling.
If the Celtic vice-chairman had defended an adult Celtic supporter who murdered a young boy Rangers supporter, do we really have to wonder what the media outcry would have been? They would have said that Celtic were validating the act - and they would have been right.

No such outcry was heard of course. What does that tell us?
Findlay's reply, when questioned on his judgement, was that everyone deserved a defence. Did he believe he was the only barrister in the UK? His actions were horribly inappropriate, as any sentient professional would have recognised. Who knows what additional emotional pain it caused the Scott family.

Just realised I'm preaching to the choir. I'll write to Mrs McAlpine also. I do think it matters, and I do think an impartial press are essential to a democracy. This man Findlay shames the country I would love to feel part of.

    PS - McGrory
You asked me a specific question - I've tacked the response on to the end of the last thread

Also O'Neill would not have been able to talk to Newcastle when under contract to Celtic, so there's no chance of this clause being in either. otherwise he, SP and NUCC would all have been guilty of tapping...

Neither Stan nor O'Connor can sign any kind of pre-contract. If you do sign something it can't be predicated on the replacement of a manager with another.

By pre-contract then you mean there was a clause saying he could move to Spain/Italy/England if an over came in over a certain value and he wanted to go.

If this is true then fine... at least we know we have the money to find a quality replacement... either now or for the summer.

    Wee Wallace

I thought he had a very good game on Saturday, constantly being available and getting wide at pace.

He is vulnerable to the high ball as last man. This oocurs in a 4 because usually one of the central defenders has been drawn out. He would fair much better in a 3/5 as this allows a further central man to cover.

He cannot do anything about his height so this a weakness that cannot be trained out.

That means if we persist with a 442 we need someone else. If WGS is prepared to resort to a 3/5 then I feel he can be used without the height vulnerability.

Re Donald Findlay. The Herald must have been aware of what kind of reaction they would get by giving this guy a voice. I guess the FFers boycott must be biting. I will continue to buy it too as, despite its faults, it is still the best paper up here.

There were quite a few letters published in the paper last week about the column, James McMillan notably jumping in early but only two of the letters (including one from yours truly) addressed the content which was so embarrassing an ‘O’ grade English student would have disowned it. This week’s isn’t much better.

I believe the approach of criticising the message rather than the messenger is the best one. By all means write in to The Herald but only with regards to the content of the column. Unless and until he causes actual offence in what he writes the only way he will be dumped is if his columns continue to be so poor and the readership picks on that fact.

Paul, not sure how you can think Keane played well in defence. I thought he had a pretty rotten game and was no better than McManus beside him. I never liked Keane at CB with Man U when he filled in the odd time, and I certainly haven't changed my mind. Twice in the first half he steamed into challenges and only took the player. Both times he was fortunate to escape action from the referee. I also didn't think he looked too clever in the air - but he's not really tall enough and hence it isn't really his fault. Bobo would have been slsughtered on here for some of his slack play, and to tell the truth, I'd much rather have Bobo any day of the week.

As for Telfer being consistent, he consistently can't run with the ball, can’t tackle and can’t cross. He consistently pumps the long ball to BBJ rather than play a simple pass to Naka and he slows everything up - Nakamura had to wait an age for him to overlap all game on Saturday. The sooner he's kicked out of the team the better.

Delighted Wilson is signing and I'd be more than happy for Caldwell to join him before the end of the transfer deadline. That way we could get Keane into the midfield where he belongs, probably at the expense of Lennon who seems to be in a bit of a rut at present. As I said after the game, I felt it was completely embarrassing watching some of our defending on Saturday, and unless we sort it out quick, we'll be dropping points in the next few weeks.

I will take your word that Celtic do not want to sign Kenny Miller.

That being the case, why have so much of the media been saying that we actually are interested in signing him?

The reason I ask, is that usually some hack would try to dismiss the story, thereby suggesting that he has better contacts within Celtic Park. But, to the best of my knowledge, this has not happened yet.

Personally, I do not want him. NOT because he is a former R****** player, but rather I feel that he is neither good enough, or needed at this particular time.

Any news on the Hungarian winger, or the Finnish winger yet?

    Rossio,

Agreed, Keano is no defender and with no major hurdles to cross until September, maybe WGS will think of utilising Keane at CB to fix the mess in defence. I don't think that medicore performances in a poor defence is going to enhance RK's repuation or confidence - look at the present defence.

    Telfer:

Was brought in as a utility man (although maybe his No2, suggests it was always WGS intention to use him there.) If he had been used as a squad member, his performances may have endeared him to the Celtic faithfull as it is he has little credability left.

    Wallace:

Potential, left midfield/winger, needs to build himself up and to improve his all round game. He has been exposed on each outing at left back and his creibility is going down the toilet, some good runs forward and linking play are his only redeeming features at the moment.

    McManus:

Again looks far from the complete player at 23 can't be called a youngster but had potentail and causes problems in the box. His Celtic career may be over before it's really taken off.

We have 5 or 6 first class players in the squad at present. We should be playing them to their strenghts and sorting out the obviouus weaknesses in the squad.

LONG TERM FIXES, NOT QUICK FIXES.

On the subject of Keano I'm always willing to give players (even world class ones) the benefit of the doubt when they are just back from injury. I've no doubt Keano will be a major player for us whether he plays in midfield or defence.

I will take each point in turn. the main one i am not from the dark side the force is strong in this one. Bosman rulings 2 per window, Petrov is not a bosman is an agreed figure. You are not tapping if the club give you permission. It is also very true regarding the share issue, being a shareholder i know this. Now heaven for bid that i would suggest that agents where still out there promoting their players to get more money. Lets all stat living in the real world, tapping goes on, it is only illegal if you get caught. As for MON's other half she is as you say the same although she is not deteriorating, but his daughters will have finished the Glasgow education come summertime. i Never once said these where exclusive, i was merely looking for help in to dispelling said remarks as i would be as happy as hoopy in a fire hydrant shop if they were unfounded. Now every transfer window that goes by said person hears things, now deals change on a regular basis but in my experience 80% of what he hears, does happen. Don't get me wrong most of it is not Celtic related and i take no great interest, but as we are at an evolving stage of Celtic football club there a lot of deals being done left, right and indeed centre. I appreciate the critics and am happy to see that it does not just turn in to a slagging match and for once it is a proper Celtic site, with as the locals say "no bams".

Also i only signed up to post today but have been reading for a while as for the exclusive last weekend, different shamrock !!!

The perceptual world consists of imperfect copies of the intelligible forms or ideas. These forms are unchangeable and perfect, and are only comprehensible by the use of the intellect or understanding,

How could you even contemplate Telfer at Centre Back.

KM's agent is obviously flying a kite. Hearts and Rangers can't afford/don't want him, he wants to return to Scotland so agent publicly sounds us out.

Journalists have now got a free back page without doing any work. There is a dearth of transfer stories so need to make it up. It is interesting that despite the £10 to £100 million cash injection that TFOD are getting even the red tops are not linking them with any players.

Also why was Boumsong on a pre contract a great piece of business and Caldwell is robbing Hibs of a fee? Hold on I am starting to drift into paranoia.

On the Findlay as a columnist issue. It has been done first and foremost to be controversial and given the controversy it has stirred here it must be working. I'll continue to buy the Herald for reasons other than sport but I am very much against boycotts, let's leave that to the FF Brigade (a sanctioned by Murray).

On Fatty Foulke there is some great stuff on him in a book called `He always puts it to the right a history of the penalty kick’ , which says that it was he who introduced the idea of the ballboy so that he didn’t have to run for the ball.
Also that he once gave away a penalty when he lifted and turned upside down the centre forward who was winding him up and stuck his head in a puddle.
Unfortunately Foulke died young and broke after spending his last years in fair grounds doing beat the goal for pennies.

For reasons already stated, delighted Wilson has signed. Someone give Telfer a lift to the airport - he did score that lovely goal against Aberdeen after all! Seriously though, for our mobile team to work, we can't have players such as Telfer, as he continuously slows up play or plays the long ball. I also feel he's no better in the air than Wallace on the other side. Look back over the games this season and look at how many times Telfer was caught out with a cross ball - he has a really strange technique where he looks at the player he's marking rather than the ball. Good riddance as far as I'm concerned. Wilson has to start on Sunday.

In the Twilight Zone, Eamonn Andrews is hosting a special CQN This is your Life special with Gordon Strachan.

Eamonn - Your next manager in the North East then Gordon is from the other side of the Old Firm, ex Dumfermline and Rangers forward Alex Ferguson. But it is the New Firm which Aberdeen will become a part of, along with Dundee United in the early Eighties. The Dons win the Cup winners Cup in Sweden in 1983 but it is a location that would prove to be less to their liking on the other side of the New Firm....

strong Edinburgh accent heard over P:A. system

" Gothenburg may have been a happy hunting ground for you but Ah'll no be going there for ma holidays "

Yes it´s former Hamilton Accies striker and Dundee United skipper Paul Hegarty.

Strachan - Well at least you won the league in ´83 and did pretty well in the EC the following year, semi final against Roma.

Hegarty - That was when we were the best in Scotland, The New Firm's three consecutive leagues was the longest the Glasgow two have gone without winning it.

Strachan - What was it we had?

Hegarty - the defensive partnerships, Me and Narey, Miller and McLeish. Good teams are always built up from the back

Strachan - And why did it come to an end?

Hegarty - Well it was Hearts that blew it really, if they had won it in 1986 then pluralism could maybe really have set in.

Strachan - And then also I had been one of the usual guys moving down south but there was another guy from Edinburgh moving up north.

Hegarty - Aye and he brought the flower and fauna from England up with him.

Eamonn - Was that not the dandy who was responsible for starting the run on the bank at Monte Edmiston?

Strachan - Well I was being managed by another dandy by that time, but that is another story Eamonn
