Miller added to striking options for next season.

Remarkably, Kenny Miller is the first Bosman player Celtic have signed months before he can become a Celtic player.

I am pleased we have figured out when to make Bosman signings, the unsightly scramble on 31st August we have become familiar with is no way to plan your resources.

I am also pleased that the importance of pace has been recognised. Miller will push Zurawski and Beattie for their position in the team. He is not a John Hartson type player, nor is he a thirty goals per season striker, but neither was Chris Sutton.

Welcome Kenny.

Welcome to Kenny Miller. I am not enthused by his signing as I do believe that he is no better than what we currently have.

However, he will receive my full support and I hope ALL Celtic supporters follow suit.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive club with a support to match.

Now is the time to prove it!!

    Kenny Miller Arghhhhhh!!!

They say you can tell how good a player is by the teams who were after him....sheffield United and ermmm Rankers.....Say no more.....

A squad player at best.....Why we dont give Yoof a chance is beyond me!!

Lets hope the other striker is of a higher calibre...(ie the one we need to see us through to the end of the season)

Frankly I'm stunned by that...I had never even thought of that...

Anyway, welcome Kenny. I do hope he has matured as a player and if he has we can only benefit....

Contrary to your assertion, Paul, I believe that - with Maloney and Naka supplying the ammo, Kenny Miller CAN be a THIRTY goals a season player for us in the SPL.
Scottish defenders HATE players with pace.
He will also be a great help to our defence in away matches in the Champions League.
And, as with Henrik (albeit not of his standard... who is?), he will be our first line of defence.
The bits and pieces of the jigsaw are coming together nicely.
    Welcome to Paradise, Kenny!

Some of MO'Ns signings[Suzanne Vega]were not overtly criticised at the time as he was seen as someone who could jumpstart a players'faltering career,CRS being the classic example, and also Bobby Petta[for about a month]

Today is Dolly Parton's 60th birthday so we're having a tribute night at the Berserkers.I'm wearing a blonde wig on my head, and a cast of BBJs backside on my chest.

Can we put the talk of KM being an ex Rangers player to bed this to me is not an issue. Let the Rangers supporters be the ones to have a problem with him, not only in that he is now going to play for us but also because if the media have it right he knock them back.

Paul67 I agree he is not John Hartson type player and that he will not score thirty goals a season ( not least as he will be at best a rotation player), however, he will not add to the team in any way in the manner that Chris Sutton did.

If someone at CP can instil in him a good 1st touch then he will become a better player and be able to apply his pace.

I live in hope and pray that the powers that be at CP can get the other RK on the books, that would be something that would benefit us and he would be a force in the CL. Any of the ADUMBRATE posters out ther able to give us a clue to this?

    Welcome aboard Kenny.

Something we have missed for the last 2 years is a striker who will hassle opposition defenders in their own half. Whilst Miller may not be a 30 goal a season striker (although I am always optimistic), he will run his legs off up front and will never give the opposition a rest. His energy and movement will create space for others (Naka, Shaun, etc) to run into.

I have a feeling a lot of people will be eating their words over this signing. If Miller can perform regularly to the level he did against Italy a few months ago, then we will have a very good player.

Posted this in previous thread, but thought I'd repost as it is relevant.

Let's put this weeks events into so finacial context.

We release a trial defender who failed to impress at the highest level thus saving the £700K fee.

We then use the £700K saved to bring in a Hungarian International LB an area that we have trouble with this season.

And finally we sign two Scotland Internationals on Pre-contracts thus saving god know how many hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Taking away the fact that some people may not rate these players I would say that WGS and his staff must have just cause to sign these players and I for one will stand by them as long as they wear the hoops.

    Hail, hail.

GM, He's a completely different player to Sutton, He's an out and out striker with pace. I actually think Zurawski is a Sutton type of player who will score more goals that Chris did. He's intelligent and makes runs and holds up play for the rest of the team.

Kenny will bag goals in the SPL, he did before and he will again, dont worry about that. Its how far from that can he take us?? thats where my niggling doubt comes from but nonetheless he's a bhoy and will be treated like one. C'mon Kenny!!

The office Huns have already started the "Signing Rangers rejects...huh huh"!!

I share your delight that we are finally doing what is required in the marketplace viz think and plan ahead. Welcome Kenny Miller. Don't care who you played with before or what your first touch may be. You've been signed for your attributes and what they will add to the teamn plan.

Re-post from previous thread as the comments will be relevant for as long as there are alternatives views on WGS downsizing and the like.

Please can we have some perspective from the doom and gloomers?

Whilst they all wax lyrical about the MON era etc and bemoan the loss and presumed future loss of the world class (as they tell it) Larsson Sutton Petrov Hartson (even Mc Namara for some) they complain bitterly about the downsizing evidenced by the likes of Telfer, Camara, Miller, Wilson and conveniently ignore the introduction of Boruc Nakamura Zurawski because it doesn’t suit the argument.

Can they and we just remember two things.

    One

That this collection of “great” players whose loss they are regretting, whilst giving the success starved support great moments under MON for which we are all grateful, were beaten UEFA Cup finalists and never qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League.

    Two.

That the Lisbon Lions were all home grown players, possessed probably only one world class player that compares with Larsson, but together were the most formidable collection of players ever to don the hoops.

The majority of that team were the underperformers and bit part players of the late 50’s and early ’60’s but together they became legends. For those who were there they will remember there was plenty of talk then about players not being “ Celtic class” and the thought of winning almost anything at all thought of as a hope rather than a possibility. European Cup? – in your dreams. Well we all know what happened. A real team did that. Not a collection that suddenly came together overnight but a number of disparate parts welded together into a formidable force a team continuum that went on to win 9 championships in a row against stronger opposition than MON’s teams ever faced.

A team that can do great things is what I believe Gordon Strachan aspires to and I for one believe its possible not only to dream the dream but to live it. I will continue to support the aim regardless of the occasional blip or concern re some of the individual parts.

In general, I think its a bad move for players to sign for "the opposition", eg Judas, Sol Campbell, Figo etc.. It just proves that they are motivated purely by money, and don't care what supporters think. It shows a lack of respect for the people who previously idolised you and made you a wealthy man (even if they were all huns!).

On the other hand, I suppose its possible that KM bears a grudge against Rangers for letting him go, and he wants to getitrightupthem.

Re Robbie Keane, I was under the impression his contract was nearly up but have just found the following quote from 08 Jan

"Asked to guarantee to fans he will still be at the club at the end of the transfer window, Keane replied: "I have two and a half years left on my contract. That says it all."

    Also from Dec last year,
"Keane's contract expires at the end of the season but Spurs have the option to increase it for another two years and Jol insists that is exactly what they will be doing."

    Can anybody clarify the position?

    Welcome Kenny Miller,
You have seen the error of your ways i.e. playing for Rangers....and sought to rectify it ...we forgive you!

There's one thing you cannot coach in a player and that is pace! Paul is right....that is the plan for this team...plenty of pace.

KM has this and WGS will coach him in some of his other development needs. He can finish and he will get better at this.

Well done Celtic.....a decent player who will do a job for us and no transfer fee.

Watched a Hibs v Celtic game at Easter Rd from 1980 on Celtic TV last night. Celtic drew 1-1 & Aitken scored our goal with a sweet header from a deft Provan free kick.

Big Roy turned to the Hibs end & gave a good old left hand under the right arm salute a la Jim Melrose at Tannadice/Berkovic celebration. I'm still laughing yet.

We definetely need better 'old school' goal celebrations like that. Only Suttons was half decent & he's gone now

    Hi Paul

I agree with Celticbhoy's comments at 11:36. I think part of the problem is that too many people are compairng Kenny Miller with Mo Johnson. These same people might do better to compare KM's move with Alfie Conn back in the seventies.

With Johnson the problem was he said he wanted to re-signng for the Hoops, then in the next breath he signed for Rangers. As a result, he became the poster boy for all things evil as far as Celtic was concerned. KM dores not appear to carry that sort of baggage. So let's just wish him all the best.

It is also nice to have some idea of who will be in the team for next season instead of the usual nail biting 'Will he/Won't he sign for us' fiasco that comes around every 31th August. It also gives the press less of a chance to stir things up atround that time as well, although you can bet it won't stop them getting up to mischief anyway.

I do not see him scoring as many goals as BBJ, but he has other qualities, such as pace, and stamina that we appear to have been lacking up front. Will he be a success? Only time will tell. Given our current financial state, KM is about as good as we are going to get.

Does anyone know much about this Hungarian lad Halmosi?

    Hail Hail

KM is currently a better player than (and much less injury prone) than Craig Beattie. I think in a few years Beattie will be far better than KM but as of todays date thats the situation as I see it.

He's also far better than Nacho Nae Goals so if that wee nyaff can score 25 goals why can't KM score 30?

A lot of you boys will be eating your words in a years time. I'd be willing to wager on it!

I have heard from my Spurs mole that Keane absolutely, definitely, certainly has a two year extension/option on the table, but it is at Spurs' choice rather than his.

My mole has told me though that Keane's extension is based on a few things. namely Mido signing permanently, Defoe being hoofed, Razsiak being hoofed and the signing of a certain Dutch striker which is officially still top secret......unless your mole spills the beans during drunken idiocy....this won't be until summer, but appears to be a cert (injury dependent though)

A very warm Celtic welcome to Kenny Miller. I am sure he will add more than a few goals to the tally as we look forward to retaining our title AGAIN next year.

Helicopters won't be required to present the league trophy, we will have it tied up & neatly wrapped long before May this year & next year as well.

An astute piece of business if we can acquire another forward to complement the strike force we will have ample cover for injuries / loss of form etc.

Thank god Celtic have finally grasped the art of forward planning & the Bosman market.

The annual sight of O'Neill driving a Y regi Montego (with no road tax, crisps scattered everywhere & a baby seat) up & down the M1 on the last day of the January Window was becoming tiring.

Driving into Killington Lake services at 2.00 in the morning with John Robertson smoking 200 fags in the back seat & asking Dwight Yorke & Michael Gray if they want to join Celtic.

    Welcome KM,

A couple of points. You may have noticed on the News Now site that Rangers tried to go back in to buy him and Barry Ferguson pleaded with him on the phone not to join us - surely that's got to be worth some big smiles. How are big fat DJ and windbag Keevins going to explain how Murray Mint couldn't secure a Bossman that they were after?

Second point - KM showed his potential against Italy and if we can get that level of performance from him we will have an excellent forward. Away from home in Europe that type of player means the opposition have to leave 2-3 men back, not something they had to do with Chris Sutton or BBJ. I think he'll do the biz for us and hope he gets the support and time to settle in.

Reputations count for nothing in football - ask Juninho.

Would the sceptics rather we had got the badge kissing bam Novo a couple of seasons ago?

Miller might not be a 30 goals a season player but he will give GS options and that is something we have lacked since HL left.

Good luck Kenny Miller, you've got a point to prove.

im not too overly fussed on the ex rangers thing, id like to see one get a hat trick at ibrox!
im concerned because in my opinion, we will be spending big wages (if we did in fact beat off EPL teams) on a player who isnt better than what we have, added on with the fact that he doesnt actually offer us a different dimension to what we have.
With Beattie, Maloney and Zuraski, they all do the job Miller will, bar Zurawski with the pace.

I'd rather we went for a striker who is a different mould to what we have, then depending on what game, or how a game is going, he would change the pattern of the game, where i dont think Miller will.

Again, our least outfield priority was a striker

    Kenny Miller

A very astute and brave signing by GS. No Celtic manager since Stein has bought an ex-Ger. GS is proving he is his own man and his purchases are an attempt to shape the team to his manner and style.

Pace is becoming (or has become) the major requirement/asset for the modern day footballer.

Miller has this in abundance along with his new found strength and confidence.

I can't work out though if the reason the support are split is due to him being an ex-ger or the fact he is a scotland striker?

Just think of the joy and passion that Auld, Gemmell, Wallace, McGrain, Dalglish, MacLeod and Lambert all showed when wearing the hoops.

    Good Luck Kenny!

...Danny, the thing is he is better than what we've had with Beattie and Magic crocked for so long, playing midflieders out of positiopn etc. Another plus is I can't see us playing much route 1 football with a front line of Maloney and Miller.

21st century football's a squad game, especially when we're in the Champions League next year, so a current international (even if it is only Scotland), who has performed well in Europe, on a Bozzie has to be decent business.

Big Liam - sorry you think that way, he ran the Italians ragged and if you saw them celebrating when they eventually got their goal I doubt if you would interpret it as a team that couldn't be "ar---d".

Although hugely disappointed in Hartley's behaviour in last game, I would still welcome him at CP, he would improve the team - end of story. He's no axe murderer or card-carrying loyalist as far as I'm aware.

No relevance to Celtic on this post but just found this on the BBC website:

"Hibs' Shiels to have eye removed

Dean Shiels does not want a fuss made over his operation
Hibernian's Dean Shiels is to undergo surgery to have an eye removed.
The Northern Ireland Under-21 international has been sightless in the eye since a domestic accident when he was eight years old.

Shiels, who can play in midfield or up front, said: "It was always envisaged that there might come a time when the damaged eye might have to be removed."

As having been a victim of losing an eye when I was 15 years old myself (and a budding footballer at the time too I may add), this is all too familiar to me and this is when you realise that football is not the be all and end all of your life

Hope all goes well for you Dean

Whilst not exactly over the moon about the signing of Miller I, like many others, will give him my full backing as long as he is a Celtic player. I do not think he is the answer but as a squad player then I suppose he is a worthwhile addition. I feel sorry for the younger bhoys coming through the ranks though as they will feel that they're being pushed back down the pecking order come the start of next season. I for one would like to see the young Finnish lad given a chance before long as he seems to be banging the goals in for the reserves on a regular basis.

If Hartson leaves then I have been praying that his replacement would be of a similar mould ie big, strong as an ox and with more than a touch of arrogance (and slightly more mobile). During the past 5 years we have never went to grounds (namely Ibrox) in the fear of being bullied off the park, it was the other teams who were in awe of our size and strength. That is changing throughout the entire team now as we change our style of play, we still need the big men though.

    Hail Hail

Wilson has definetly signed as has Miller. Caldwell I'm not sure if it's official but it's almost certain he will (think they're still waiting to see whether they get him now or in the summer before anything is signed?)

Halmosi is on a weeks trial but it is being widely reported by the player, his club and his agent that fees have been agreed. I expect him to be signed Friday or Saturday.

Anyone know what type of player James Hayter is? I know the name but don't know much about him.

Nobody can foretell the future - not even you, so lets be fair and reasonable, like all good Celtic supporters should be, and wait to see how it pans out. GS has had him watched for some time now and believes he can do a job for us. This is the same GS that has us top of the SPL 17 points clear of Rangers when at the start of the season posts like yours asking for him to be blootered where 10 a penny. Keep your powder dry until the time is right, some 6 months before we see him run out at Parkhead is not the right time.

Are congratualtions not in order for GS and his cohorts? Since the transfer window opened we have signed the legendary Roy Keane and by the looks of things signed an additional TWO PLAYERS on pre contracts plus Wilson. With Halmosi looking a decent prospect to sign by the end of the week.

All this work and it's only January 19! The media must surely be asking questions about rangers inactivity during the transfer window? One signing! Who would YOU pick if you had the choice?

    Paul
re the previous thread. condecension is not an endearing quality. Let me clarify the point I was trying to make.

I understood that amortisation meant we couldnt spend under MON after large fees paid in 2000/2001.

I understood that the chaging football marketplace meant we had to cut the wage bill.

I understand that asset management means we may have to sell Stan.

However I dont understand where the lates round of mediocre signings are going to leave the club financially. Its as plain as the nose on Phil Thomsons face that season ticket sales were not as impressive this year as in previous years. Next year watching the likes of Wilson, Caldwell and Miller the numbers will begin to fall. Dont forget 15 years ago Celtic pulled 30k on a good day. In other words half the crowd in CP on a Saturday afternoon were doing something else with their saturdays and could easily go back to gambling, drinking, domestic violenc etc.

By my reckoning a drop of 5k in season books will cost the club 2.5million.

Heres a direct question to you Paul. Where will the money come from to fill the financial hole in our budget following such a drop in season book numbers?

The answer to me is a further drop in standards and subsequent drop in ticket sales etc etc.

Far from advocating spend more Paul I see the KM signing as an utter waste of money as he's worse that what we have. Does 20k a week over 3 years present a sound deal in your eyes for a none goalscoring striker when Craig Beattie is already at the club.

There may be people at Celtic just now who are quite happy to watch the standards fall to the level of competing in the SPL and out of Europe every year before Christmas. I for one am not.

    Kojo
Enchanting European evenings? You are joking arent you?

I take it your taking Mrs Kojo to Paris for the weekend.

I think we can see that the budgetary constraints (or down sizing financially) mean that we cannot sign proven players from the top echelons and have to sign lesser known players with the hope that they can progress and mature a la Larsson, Pierre etc.

Accepting this reality means we will not sign a Robbie Keane in this financial situation.

Some have mentioned 30 goals a season. That's top dollar that very few strickers will achieve. How many will BBJ get this season? He's going to be lucky to break 20 never mind 30.

If we can get 20 from Miller then that's probably a fair return.

Wouldn't have been my choice, but then I'm not WGS.

Welcome to the phenomena that is Celtic, try your best, work hard and you'll have my support.

As with all players if he's a wrong signing it's not his fault. That's down to the Manager.

Jinky/joos/bobo (other options would be who boyd,johan,enrico,didi/mahe(442), reiper? im sure im forgetin anthoer scandanavian but cant remember his name of top a me head, think we can forget scheidt/tebily)
Didi/Lubo/Lambo/Stan/thommo (not too sure naka has played enough (big games) to be there yet, other optins lenny, thom, di canio (not really his position i know but im struggling here)
Sutton/Larsson (Bit hard on bbj but they were the partnership, other options pierre? nah, beattie, burchill, maloney not enough games.. by the way i know a few of them have had recent dips in form but im refering to their peak

    Bhoy oh Bhoy

The lad I think you referring to is Finnboggason who is in fact an Icelander but been injured for some time. That aside he is still very raw and has no great pace but is big and skilful despite his size and may come good. Another worthy of note is Diarmud O' Carrol who is possibly closer to a first team start. Again he is no Craig Beattie or Kenny Miller when it comes to pace and for the time being that's what Gordon Strachan sees as the style to give us domestic success and a chance in Europe.

I'm not sure about KM, BUT thinking back, wasn't Brattback, the same type of player, he didn't score many goals due to teams sitting back 25 yards out, leaving little space to run into (His perfect goal the one he scored against St Johnstone).......... keep with me now.....

How many goals does Henry score for the gunners with a ball played through the middle, from a break.

the SPL is no longer afraid of Celtic or TFOD, teams do not sit back and defend against us, they attack and leave holes at the back, at the moment we have the players to pass the ball through these holes, but we haven't got a player making the runs, if anyone can, Miller can!

The player is growing on me minute by minute. and thats coming from me who laughed when TFOD were going to sign him after his display against Italy, cause i thought he was p***.

He is now wearing the hoops, so i back him 100%

All you guys only compare him to a "wonderous" performance against italy , basically all he has done in his career. He isnt Celtic class. Worse than a telfer signing except it looks like he's not just here for a stop gap. Its all well and good filling the Celtic side with scotland internationals but has anyone told WGS that scotland are, lets face it, crap.

Its a bit hypocritical for some to tick me off for my views while cutting our current team to shreds every week. I'll state the obvious, signing a championship player who amassed a grand total of 7 goals in the league this year , to lead our CL forward line is frankly insane.

Denia-bhoy , hartley would never enhance Celtic football club in any footballing attribute. He's another average footballer riding on the crest of a wave lead by the "Messiah" walter smith.

At least belarus brought the hype down or we would probaly try and sign webster and pressley.

As it happens, the only opinion that matters is Gordon Strachan's. He's watched Miller plenty of times. As has Tommy Burns, who has also seen Miller in training for Scotland. And our scouts will have compiled numerous reports on his performances for Wolves this season.
May I suggest that their opinions on Kenny Miller's abilities might be a tad more "informed" and "objective" than yours?

    Big Liam

I agree entirely and was as upset as you clearly are. However I'm hoping that it is something like this:

BBJ wants away. That leaves us 2 strikers, Majic and Beattie. (Maloney is definitely a midfielder, he's tremendous there). We need 4 strikers. Personally I think Beattie and Majic would be a great pairing but maybe Beattie should still be back up for a season or too for experience/prove fitness. So we need a first choice and another back up. Kenny Miller is the back up? I hope. A.N. Other is yet to arrive (Robbie Keane??). Now all of a sudden our striking options don't look too bad at all, with your 4th choice having international experience and still learning.

Now maybe strikers 1, 2 and 3 stay fit and Miller is unhappy at Christmas. OK, son, find yourself another club, we'll take the first offer of £1.5M in the January madness.

Wieghorst suffered from Guillaume Barre syndrome (a form of peripheral polyneuritis characterized by pain and weakness and sometimes paralysis of the limbs; cause is unknown) as indeed did Liverpool player Markus Babel.

Wieghorst did eventually restart his career and went on star for (I think) Copenhagen and Denmark earning himslef player of the year awards and the nickname "Braveheart"

He recently retired after a knee injury suffered I think against Scotland/England funnily enough ( I remember watching it)

Morten Wieghorst had `Guillain Barre` syndrome. Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), is an acquired immune-mediated inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nervous system (i.e. not the brain or spinal cord).

It is also called acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, acute idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, acute idiopathic polyneuritis, French Polio and Landry’s ascending paralysis.

The pathologic hallmark of Guillain-Barré syndrome is loss of myelin in peripheral nerves due to an acute and progressive inflammation of unknown cause.

It is suggested that Guillain-Barré syndrome is an autoimmune disease, in which the sufferer’s immune system is triggered into damaging the nerve covering.

    Dr Bob.

Welcome Kenny Miller, I sincerely hope you do an excellent job for us, I do wish some on here would give the guy a chance before writing him off. You`ll have to anyway, cos he`s coming to us.

If Kenny Miller is really as bad as some will have us believe, does it mean that no one on the Celtic coaching staff recognises this? Or just that no one is willing to say as much to WGS? Frankly, I don't believe for one minute that WGS makes this kind of signing decision in isolation, even if it's ultimately his call.

Another thought, why does KM get a game for Scotland if he is so poor? If Riordan is so much better, why does he not oust him from the team? I assume that Tommy Burns rates KM given he works closely with him and is also well-placed to offer an opinion to the rest of the Celtic coaching staff. Gelnn Hoddle must also rate him if he was so keen to retain the boy. And Rangers desperately try to sign him from under our noses . . . And P8ddy before you bold me, I accept that all of the above could be wrong in their judgement.

Like everyone here I have my opinions about most players but I don't believe I'm a better judge of quality than WGS, his coaches and the Celtic scouts. And besides that, I believe that they are all working their butts off to deliver a successful side that plays attractive football. I accept that they will make some mistakes but until I have just cause to do otherwise, they and KM have my full support.

I think we're all reaching for reasons that Kenny Miller will be a good signing for Celtic.I think however most peoples initial reaction is the honest one.

His performances for Scotland have imo been patchy. Good against Italy at hampden rank against Italy in Milan.

2 goals in 14 games in the chamionship say more about him than I ever could. Like Telfer,Camara and Caldwell just another sign of the falling standards at Celtic.

    From http://www.wolves.vitalfootball.co.uk/article.asp?a=7085

It seems like the Wolves fans are sad to be losing such a 'poor' player:

"The wait is over. The decision is made. Kenny has signed a pre contract agreement with Glasgow Celtic and will join them once Wolves season is over.

The news will come as a bitter blow to Wolves fans hoping King Kenny might make an about turn and re sign for the club, but the reality is those hopes were slim."

    Big Liam,

No doubt you have a valid point.

But i do remember him breaking into the Hibs team and thinking - that boy can play- His move to the huns did`t work out- probably too soon.

What he will give, and something we dont really have now, is a tremendous work rate up front - defending from the front, etc.

But there`s no way we`re going to pay £17,000 per week in our financial situation for him to sit on the bench.

So he`ll be in the team - and we can forget about Robbie Keane.

In fact we can all now forget about any player who gets paid over £20,000 per week.........simple. (i.e Wayne Bridge )

So 30,000 of the people that go to CP on a saturday are either gamblers, alcys or wifebeaters.

(Bazza apart!!!) He wasn`t my first choice, neither was WGS but i`m happy with our league position, and i`m happy with the way we play football. (most of the time!) I think he`ll be well up for it,AND it might take some of the heat off of Neil Lennon from the boo boys. Ok, I made that last bit up.

Why haven't we been able to make a decision on Du Wei after having him for 6 months, I know I've made the point before but surly he was playing against players of a similar calibre and age to Clyde week in and week out (SPL reserves).

One half in half a season seems little reason to condemn the guy. Either he was good enough or he wasn't, why were we trying to extend his loan deal?

Time to give Kenny Miller a break I think. No amount of whingeing is going to change the fact that he is now a Celtic player. A player whose name has not been mentioned is Ivan Sproule.

Kenny Miller can bring to Celtic what Sproule brings to Hibs. As someone else mentioned, SPL sides cannot handle pace like that. Both Miller and Sproule are not yet scoring an abundance of goals, and are by no means great technical players, but they can both run at speed for ninety minutes (or from the bench,) put defences into disarray, and create openings. Do you want a player like that running for you or against you?

While Miller is no better than the attacking players we have, he does bring attributes we do not have in abundance - pace, stamina, and persistance in front of goal. Add the fact that he has something to prove, and it looks like a decent enough signing.

Kenny Miller will be pulling on the hoops and that´s good enough for me.

Celtic are a better team than Scotland and KM will carve open a bucket load of chances. He has to make the step up if he wants to play in the CL. Considering that he could have ended up in an EPL team he shouldn´t be that far away.

One thing he will have to drop from his game is his greed.

There has been much made from the Parkhead gates from the seventies and eighties, a couple of things, after a series of disasters ground attendance was restricted for safety reasons.

Secondly boys were lifted over the turnstiles not registering in the official attendance, there was also a practise amongst some clubs of taking the cash but underestimating the official attendance to help with their tax burden.

Celtic of course would never be party to this despicable practice; however there was the odd occasion when the ground seemed somewhat fuller???

Also from memory, going to Parkhead on a saturday didn't restrict the drinking and gambling amougst a certain element of Celtic fans.

Michael Collins, you need to put the Miller signing in context with the other signings GS has made.

There have been mixed results, just as there was under Martin, but signing Miller (whom you don’t fancy), does not mean this is indicative of a lowering in standards or targets, as we will spend a total of £9m on transfer fees this season if the Hungarian comes.

You might be right and GS might be wrong on this one, I’ll concede that most people were right about Camara, but this is not the time to judge this signing, and we cannot extrapolate financial planning from this move and ignore the monies spent on Nakamura and Zurawski.

I have read on here people criticising other sites because they are too critical. It is the opposite here.
Many good posters here have either left or reduced their postings because of the personal ridicule.
I will not be giving up my much cherished season ticket or stop buying club merchandise or stop looking/posting on here just because we have signed KM.Surely I am allowed an opinion and I would dearly love to be proved wrong and he turns into a star for us.

Michael Collins it may have been an attempt at humour but a poor one.

Agree with you about the fact that 15 years ago there was only 30k at games but do you honestly think that because one player signs they will all give up their season books.

If as you say 5k will then there will be other fans who will buy them.

I am sure there are a few people out there with kids who have not been able to get a season book up to now and this will give them the chance if your prediction is correct.

Can I ask you the question is winning the league not good enough?

Most people on the blog believe that we are good enough to win the league even with the defence that we have at the moment.

Some of the attacking football being played is fantastic and Mr Miller will IMO fit into the system being played comfortably and score plenty.

You are entitled to your opinion of KM but at least give him the chance to play a few games to see how he does.

Surely KM's signing is all about boosting the pool of players?

Many managers, Strachan and Mourinho included, look for a pool of 2 players for every position.

I would guess our first eleven might look like this now:

    Boruc
    Wilson, Balde, McManus, Halmosi
    Naka, Petrov, Keane, Maloney
    Hartson, Magic

    and the second eleven

    Marshall
    Telfer, Virgo, Caldwell, Camara
    McGeady, Pearson, Lennon, Wallace
    Miller, Beattie.

This means that Agathe, Thommo and Varga can go as soon as they get clubs.

I keep reading about people saying Celtic are no longer signing "Quality players" because they come from small clubs ??

Pierre Van Hoojidonk - NAC BREDA
    John Collins - HIBS
    Chris Sutton - CHELSEA RESERVES
John Hartson - Coventry (On the rebound from Rangers)
    Magnus Hedman - Coventry
    RObert Douglas - Dundee
    Didier Agathe - Hibs
    Jackie McNamara - Dunfermline

Even Henrik then was only £ 650,000 from Feyenoord at the tme he was never rated a world beater

Too many fans are now turning their nose up at players, thinking Celtic should only sign players from AC Milan - Barcelona - Arsenal etc. Get real, do you know the kind of wages these guys are on ?

Why would they want to leave even if not getting a game, unless we could match / better the current wages.

It's time we got better value for our money and not wasted it on guys to hang around the reserves on first team wages.

Juninho - Bellamy - Camara did not provide value, Bellamy produced a new spirit of hope for the support but surely wasn't worthy of £ 40k+ a week. He was always likely to lose the plot at any given time or suffer a hamstring injury.

At least now the whole squad is built around realistic salaries

Willie Bhoy, i think the problem is that when you talk about bobo, johan, joos, stan, pierre, larsson,di canio, thom, cadete, rieper etc they were unknown quantities, from unfamilair clubs and alien "to us" leagues... and while i agree that we won't be attracting stars from Barcelona... atlest theres the "fear of the unknown" factor from feyenord, dortmund et, and i think "squad" players apart and apart from ashton etc we can do better than the championship

It was good ol' Regi who put in Morten's cross - it's one of those goals that's imprinted in the mind.

Another passage of play that's stuck in the mind was a freekick from Di Canio - someone (Burley, McNamara, Donnelly?) flicked the ball in the air for a volley and Di Canio smashed it towards goal - nearly went in as well!

Who mentioned anything about an Italian?

Reports of a large investment into Ibrox AFTER the end of January.

What a surprise that is....just after the transfer window closes eh?

Why? Because the "investment" is needed to allay the MIM debt situation and pay bankers as opposed to recruit bankers to play for them.

I wouldn't have Juninho in there - the games (or was it just one) where he played in his correct position he was excellent against Rangers I do believe. MON continuously played him in positions he couldn't play. You can't expect him to get back and defend or bomb up and down the wing but that's what was asked of him - if he'd been allowed to sit in a 3-5-2 behind the strikers he'd have been a fantastic signing.

For the first month of the season there were still season tickets available. The point I'm making is not about one player but about a general decline in standards which may result in people not renewing.

Agree about the league this year but dont you think this has more to do with the total collapse of our major rivals than with our quality.

    Sir Paul,

You, being of a Perspicacious Wont,
Will have noticed..... in all of my previous postings in the Miller Controversy,I have never really mentioned my private thoughts in the matter.........of how I think he will perform as a well.....Performer....

Well, I am about to add this, to the MAELSTROM of Controversy.

It has been recorded on this very site, yesterday, in fact that.......

The HALLOWED LARSON, he of the GOLDEN BOOT.....No mean feat, if I may add....... He, who is mentioned in the company of several world-class strikers, as a member of the CLUB NONPAREIL.

Mr.Henrik, was a Goal Scoring Machine, par excellence. He was......

NOT NOTED, in his early statistics, as a REMARKABLE STRIKER!

    Check the Stats....somebody.

Enough Already! The prefacing of what is to come, has been established.
    Right?
    Right!!!!!!

In light of the amazing turn-around in Henrik's goal-scoring prowess, after the first year at Parkhead, it is evident that he had indeed, succumbed to a transformation of Biblical stature.
He was now being elevated into the 30 to 40 goals per annum bracket.... and not without Merit.

    The prickly question, arises.

    Why?

Without going into all of the reasons that I believe, did shade the Drastic(not too strong a word)
advancement in his goals per season tally, here is my BALD ASSERTION......

HENRIK, for the first time in his Career......

WAS PLAYED IN HIS PROPER POSITION, WAS PLAYED TO HIS STRENGTH....and was SURROUNDED BY EXCELLENT PLAYERS.

    To sum up.

I believe that Mr.Miller will REPLICATE.... AT LEAST... SOME OF THE GOAL-SCORING ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE HALLOWED ONE.....

    Why? Pesky word.

To be perfectly candid..... I do not Know!

    However.........

    I just know!

I am basing most of my prognosis,of Mr. Miller's FUTURE CELTIC EXPLOITS,on.....

My Faith in the Shrewdness and Soccer KNOW- how, of The Little Admiral and his Celtic Crew of distinguished helpers.

The Manager, has the means at his disposal, to REINFORCE Mr. Miller's...
NASCENT... GOAL- SCORING ABILITY, with Players who are perfectly capable of supporting a Fleet-Footed, SLENDER, AGILE, Striker...

Which up to this point in Time, their support has been saddled... with a LUMBERING, MUSCLE-BOUND, Slew-Footed, TARGET MAN.......I DETEST THAT TITLE!

Yes,Guys..... I believe that The Celtic Manager has pulled of a Wicked MARCH....while the rest of us have been unaware of his intention.......
but not ALL OF US......THANK G*D!

    Hail! Hail!

I think you are on to something there. Henrik really blossomed when he had Chris Sutton beside him. (although it would be an understatement to say he was also pretty decent before Sutton arrived).

When Kenny Miller plays finding the right partner will be a very important job for Gordon Strachan and may just decide whether Kenny is a success in the Hoops or not.

Here is how the signing of Fan Fan was reported .. oh how things have changed!

Blow for Strachan as Fanfan heads for Rangers

DARRYL BROADFOOT and MARK WILSON July 05 2005

RANGERS will today negotiate the signing of José-Karl Pierre-Fanfan, the Paris Saint-Germain central defender, from under the nose of their Old Firm rivals, Celtic.
That will add to the frustration experienced by the Parkhead club in the transfer market yesterday, when they saw negotiations stall over a £2m deal for Maciej Zurawski and their chances of landing Craig Bellamy from Newcastle United recede.
Martin Bain, the Rangers chief executive, will meet Pierre-Fanfan and his agent in the French capital this afternoon to finalise the details of a three-year contract. The 29-year-old signed a similar deal with PSG last season but a loophole in the contract has enabled Rangers to sign him for free. PSG had initially wanted £2.5m for him.
The Herald understands Gordon Strachan was offered the player weeks before Rangers for around £800,000 but Peter Lawwell, the Celtic chief executive, was unable to commit, having been locked in negotiations with Zurawski, while finalising the year-long loan of Jérémie Aliadière.
Pierre-Fanfan's representatives grew tired of Celtic's procrastination and informed Rangers of the player's availability via fax. It is the first psychological blow struck by Alex McLeish against Strachan, his former Aberdeen team-mate and now Old Firm adversary.
Pierre-Fanfan has a rich reputation in the French first division and had also attracted interest from West Ham United and Portsmouth.
Since no fee will be attached, the player will benefit from a considerable hike in wages at Ibrox, to about £20,000 per week.
He may yet form a defensive partnership with Sotirios Kyrgiakos next season. The Greek has threatened to take Panathinaikos to court to terminate his contract with the club and enable him to sign for anyone else on a Bosman.
Rangers have become increasingly frustrated by the impasse but David Murray, the Rangers chairman, last night reassured supporters that his promise of four new players would be delivered by the beginning of the season.
"I want the fans to know we are working around the clock and travelling throughout Europe to try to sign the players we want," said Murray. "The targets are of a high quality and we hope to have two within the next 10 days. I told the fans I would get them four players and I intend keeping my promise."
Brahim Hemdani, the former Marseille captain, was the first high-profile capture to arrive on a Bosman, followed swiftly by the arrival of Ian Murray from Hibernian. Agreement with Pierre-Fanfan has been reached in principle and Kyrgiakos would complete the quartet of bargain acquisitions.
The Pierre-Fanfan deal could even be be completed today which would enable him to undergo a swift medical before joining his new team-mates at their pre-season training camp in Toronto.
Pierre-Fanfan is already at an advanced stage of preparation for the French season, having taken part in PSG's preparations in Biarritz.
Born in Saint Pol sur Mer, Pierre-Fanfan first came to prominence at his local side US Dunkerque. His sturdy performances were coveted by Lens and he played a significant part of their surprise championship success in 1998 after signing for £5m. He was a pillar of the team during their surge to the UEFA Cup semi-final in season 1999-2000 and was subsequently signed by AS Monaco in 2001.
Pierre-Fanfan's career in the principality was ruined by a serious knee injury and compounded by ankle and thigh problems. Unable to secure a regular starting place, he was sent on a season-long loan to PSG two years ago and after making an immediate impact signed a three-year contract last July.

    Kojo...

I fail to see, if in a past submission I labelled Mr. MILLER as a mere Journeyman.... what that observation has anything to do with what I am offering now.

Kojo, what this has to do with your current opinion is simple. It displays a singular lack of critical thought and a preponderance to simply echo the opinions of the power brokers within Celtic Park. To me, it looks like you based your opinion on Kenneth Miller firstly on Paul67's (sadly) innaccurate information that Celtic had no intention of signing this player. When it became apparent Celtic were interested? You flip-flopped, and apparently, simply at the behest of Gordon Strachan.

It's your right to change to change your mind, but I'd be interested to read what your cognative process for this volte face was. It's not as if he's played any games of football in the intervening time.

You are clearly an intelligent person with plenty to offer in the way of shining a positive light on the goings on at Celtic Park, why adopt someone elses opinion? Why should anyone take your "Stan the Journeyman" comments seriously when you are displaying such a partisan approach to the comings and goings.

I might be an annoying, pessimistic pain, but my opinions are just that, based on the events unfolding around me. Further, such a "see no evil" approach will damage Celtic.

You asked me once before why I was looking back, and said you only look forward. I'll tell you why I look back - To try and learn from our past mistakes. Liam Brady, John Barnes, Lou Macari. The historical markers are there, showing us where we went wrong. I fear we are blundering into the same stormy waters again with Gordon Strachan.

Kenny Miller, From journeyman to genius. Indeed. And all in the space of a couple of days. As we return to the bad old days, I hope you remind yourself of these words.

    /p
