    Half time, Motherwell 1 – 1 Celtic.

Celtic never looked like losing a goal, but there was not much the defence could do about it.

Need to make more chances in the second half.

  • At 22/01/06 14:48, Blogger Bradso said…

magic called offside when clearly 3 yards on and in decent position

  • At 22/01/06 14:50, Blogger Bradso said…

    half time even enough game..

lots of indivdual battles in game..

on plus side Virgo settled in quite well hard to see why he has not had chance so far this season

  • At 22/01/06 14:51, Blogger Casey said…

    That's half.

After starting well, Celtic get disjointed, give the ball up easily, make a very poor opposing team look half-decent.

As for the back for, the Virgo/Vargo partnership looks okay [he says warily]. They seem to be keeping shape, but a bit too tentative, slow. Mo making decent runs, nothing too much to slag him off, but Telfer has been very poor. Clearly the weak link is over on the right.

  • At 22/01/06 14:54, Blogger John_H said…

Cant blame defence for the goal.Overall defence playing well.Impressed with Virgo.Maloney a bit out of sorts.Should win.

  • At 22/01/06 14:55, Blogger Bobby Russell said…

Virgo and Varga playing well as is Mo, Telfer made one good clearance but has also made mistakes, including one that led up to their equaliser, not that anyone could have done anything about it. Give us an early goal, Celts, in the second half, they`ll have the impetus with that goal.

  • At 22/01/06 14:56, Blogger mncelt said…

    HT M'Well 1-1 Celtic

Missed most of the 1st half due to C67 technical problems. From what I saw, which was after we scored, we were on the back foot for most of the half. Seemed like we sat back after we scored. The defense did OK against a weak forward line - no real chance for the goal but the cross did come in from Telfer's area. It will be good to see Wilson settle in to that spot.

Naka and Petrov not commanding the middle. Maloney doing well. Didn't see Hartson or Magic create much although Magic is all over the place and working his back-side off. Virgo playing well.

This is going to be another hard fought win if we get it. Not a day for silky football.

    Mo..... Ya done GREEEEEEEEEEAT,kid!

Mo is playing a good solid game.

    Keep it goin'!

All in all, the defense after a few shaky moments is playing very well.

    Lennon and Stan.......

Too subdued..... Need more get up and go....

better passing just now. i just think that if Celtic can control the ball, move it around the park more clinically, this very rash m'well squad will make mistakes, leave themselves exposed.

    Player ratings;-

Boruc 7 - perhaps eased out when Camara cleared off line

Telfer 4 - far too many balls headed/passed to Well

Virgo 8 - did what was needed well. Setanta MOM

Varga 9 - amazed me - 2 mistakes whole game

Camara 8 - very little joy for Well down the right today

Maloney 7 - some good touches

Naka 5 - looked jaded lost too many balls in midfield

Lennon 5 - looked too slow. some interceptions but not enough. See pearsons efforts.

Petrov 4 - not at the races today or for the past few weeks. For a 'top' player he hasn't impressed recently

Magic 7 - well taken goal. tired later on

BBJ 8 - worked his ass off and took goal well

Pearson 7 - made midfield look much more solid

McGeady 7 - great going forward but still limited in defence

Strachan 9 - right subs at right time once again

Under potentially grave defensive circumstances, a hard fought 3 points. Its games like this that make title winning teams.

Glad Adam Virgo is proving a few people wrong. I was never one of the ones who leapt to an early conclusion, but I will admit that the longer he went without playing, the more I did think it. Glad to say that from these early days it looks like that nagging voice in my mind will be proved wrong.

I think that the thing that probably impacts upon our midfield's sometime inability to contribute to the attack is found in our lack of defensive confidence. I know that some are having mild reservations about Gary Caldwell, but could it be too much to hope for that the sum of Wilson, Caldwell, Virgo and hopefully A.N. Other, could be worth more than their individual parts?

It could well be that the mere fact that the communication between our defence could eliminate a lot of the problems. We all know that sometimes it seems like Balde is playing with cotton wool in his ears, and Du Wei was an unfortunate victim of it. For the record, I really feel for him. Had this been a few years ago, I'll bet he'd have been kept and he'd have made the grade.

I can foresee Virgo and Caldwell developing quite a quick understanding and potentially playing quite well together. One thing about Wilson is that he is positionally sound from what I've seen, so I don't think we'd see the centre backs pulled out of position to cover too often, which seems to be a major problem with the current defence.

Gordon, a left back please, and don't spare the horses!

our defence done well today considering our midfield was out of sorts.

i agree with most wee shaun should have been back over on the left with naka on the right.

i was not happy at petrov's performance today. yes he set up the 1st goal but there was a lack of energy and commitment especially in the 2nd half.

petrov and lennon were being run over in midfield until PACE entered the game and we picked up every 2nd ball after that.

food for thought the next time we're in this kind of battle.

we used pearo and aiden the same way we used maloney and beattie earlier in the season.

Most will decide on whether WGS is worth continuing with and is truly worthy at the end of the season and see where we are then.

As yet he has won nothing and sorry I still remember too much what he did or didn't do in the past. At Cov, Saints and with us only a few weeks ago. One swallow does not a summer make.

I hate this 'If you don't support the manager then you are not really a Celtic Fan nonsense that you often pull up.'

WGS's real test will be in the Champions League/Europe - if we get there and we're not there yet!

BBJ-great game today.Good defensively, held the ball up well, intelligent through balls played. He knows when to release a ball.

Strachan said he should be back next week - it's tabloid rubbish!

Virgo didn't put a foot wrong today, hope that will quite some of the doubters.

Maloney is always willing to run his socks off even when things aren't happening for him; Naka wasn't his usual self today. We never looked like finding many killer balls but maybe that's the movement up front.

Inspirational substitution from Strachan bringing on McGeady - his direct running was exactly what was needed... if you can't pass through them run through them.

Lennon and Petrov yet again didn't seem to have great games - hardly involved but Petrov as ever showing flashes of his ability.

  • At 22/01/06 16:42, Blogger andycol said…

WGS comment on playing Naka on the left and Shaun on the right was that he wanted to deal with the threat from Hammill. Thought occurs that Celtic rarely have to make special provision of such a magnitude to deal with the opposing left back. Maybe we should/are thinking of signing him.
