new-Celtic have learned that substitutions can change games

After eight consecutive games without a clean sheet, Celtic would have been disappointed not to have stopped Motherwell scoring on Saturday. The makeshift defence certainly deserved a clean sheet. Though perhaps the loss of a goal will keep the pressure on to look for improvement.

Rafael Benitez remarkable work at Liverpool this season (forget what he done last season) has been based on keeping skilled opponents well away from the Liverpool penalty area.

They defend from the front, a deficiency Gordon Strachan alluded to on Friday about his own team.

Adam Virgo strolled through the game and will surely now get the run in the team that his confidence, not to mention his fitness, will need before we see the best of him.

Isn’t it great to have Zurawski back?

He tired in the second half, but his movement in the first half made me wonder what we have been missing these last three months. It is clear why Gordon Strachan has signed Kenny Miller, who can do the same job.

Without this movement up front, Celtic will struggle against Scottish Premier League defences, not to mention some of the more difficult challenges that await next season.

It is not oversimplifying things to say that Aiden McGeady is hugely affected by confidence.

This time last year he was a shadow of the player who first broke into the Celtic team. There was no holding him after his goal. He replaced the best player in Scottish football (our only true match winner) and promptly won the match for Celtic.

Mo Camara and Stanislav Varga deserve credit for coming back into the team and coping so well. I had my concerns for Varga. Pitching him into a game at Fir Park, scene of his last outing was a big risk.

His confidence and match fitness must have been low. I doubt we will see him too often in the future. He was part of a very fine Celtic team, and deserves better than to be remembered as part of a defence who conceded nine goals in two games.

While it was not a classic performance, it demonstrated an important difference between the Celtic of today and the Celtic of a year ago.

Last season Celtic did not make game winning substitutions. The ‘first eleven’ were played until they ran themselves out of ideas and energy, with predictable results.

With a eye on the objectives of Celtic Quick News, I have posted a one minute audio report on the Motherwell game.

How we get our news and information will continue to change over the next few years. Text based web sites have changed the way football news is reported beyond all recognition, but the changes that lie ahead are just as great.

Already devices such as mobile phones, Personal Digital Assistants, iPods and gaming consoles can access and interact with Internet content.

The Internet has been a great democratising force in the control and reporting of news, and it is set to become more pervasive in the future.

A great result for the squad yesterday. Well done to those who stepped up to the plate when required.

Think of the team that didn't start yesterday:
    Marshall
    Wilson, Balde, McManus, Wallace
    Agathe, Keane, Thompson, Pearson
    Beattie, McGeady

Don't know if this is a formation you'd select, but a fully fit squad would give WGS a nice problem to solve.

    Hi Paul67

Not posted for a while, still been keeping up to date daily though.
My boss is an Aberdeen fan and was at Tannadice on Saturday, i asked him how Charlie Mulgrew played.
He said he was outstanding, showed good pace, good going forward, and defended well. He also said his distribution was good, and took most of Dundee United's free kick's.

He then asked me WHY did Celtic let him out on loan when we are clearly struggling in that position?

I couldn't really give him an answer, does any one else know why he wasn't givin a shot at left back?

Was that maybe a sweetner for the Wilson deal? Diferent posistions i know.

Another lesson to learn from Benitez is to strengthen even when you are at the top. After winning the European Cup he was merciless in replacing heroes for more effective players.
Strachan needs to keep his eye on the ball on two fronts.Winning the league this year then maintaining and building for next year.

Varga showed the importance of squad depth yesterday, it is vital not to let half of your team go just to 'get them of the wage bill'.

Another excelent performance from BBJ, he can provide the bulk and power which is lacking from the rest of the team when the going gets tough.

10 points clear and no excuses this time Celtic.

    Sean

I absolutely have to say here that Baldy and I along with Baldy senior have been wittering about use of substitutes under O'Neill and Strachan most weekends since O'Neill took over.

MON often made substitutions that made the brain hurt or didn't make any at all, whereas Strachan appears to be better although i have felt he's made daft changes at daft times, but on sunday I was happy to feast upon my words...Viva Aiden..

i would love us to be able to give a few of the younger lads a run (Mr Lawson especially), but we haven't yet been in a good position early enough to make it possible. Hopefully Lawson will get more ten minutes here and there as both Keane and Lennon continue to creep towards old and age and their CFC pension funds...

But aiden on sunday......first rate....and Virgo (I now I'm banging on again)..........as a Swedish guy once sang...

I HATE TO SAY I TOLD YOU SOOOOOOOOOO>>>>>ARIGHT!!

    Paul-

I read your " Hmmm..." comment when Aiden came on for Nakamura yesterday-obviously you-as well as others- had your doubts about Naka going off.
What you implied in your podcast[well done sir.] was that Aidens' goal helped his confidence.

I think the fact that young McGeadys performances away from home have been better than his home efforts-apart from the 3-0 over rangers-could be down to some of the a b u s e he takes at Celtic Park.

I don,t have a season ticket so I get to sit in various parts of the ground-the Upper North Stand being the worst for dishing out vitriol to our own young players.

If only these morons could realise the damage they are inflicting on the best batch of young players since the early seventies.

    Paul 67,

This is the link to the audio from last night's Rupert Murdoch interview on 5 Live. Kind of ties in with what you are talking about at the end of the post.

On the football, I fully expect to see Varga replaced with McManus next week. Although Stan did well he is still slow and loses his man too often. Overall I thought we played well and looked in control. Virgo was excellent as was Aiden. My heart rate remained at normal levels for most of the game bar the wonder goal.

Very well said indeed NOEL90...abuse helps no-one during a game, even worse when directed at youngsters.

A pass goes astray and they moan, do they think the opposition should only get a touch to kick-off after we score ?

Then others complain about the lack of decent opposition.

SUPPORT is the name we could do with more to win this title in TRUE CELTIC STYLE.

    Paul67,

Good succinct audio report but had problems with http://paul67.audioblog.com/rss/celticquicknews.xml

Agreed on Aiden McGeady, I thought he should have been MoM we have got another potential match winner but it was 30 mins, he needs to work on his strengh and stamina so we can get 90 minutes of true Geadness.

Back on the Edinburgh derby, like to see Hibs do it but I tend to agree with you.

    Realistically

Rangers are the second best team in the SPL at present, the top four will all play each other in the next couple of months. I think Hibs will be fourth in the league come the split. Hearts are inconsistent under Rix and will struggle to keep TFOD at bay.

    Big Picture

Without the CL revenue next year Rangers will struggle again, the long heralded sun drenched recovery at Castle Greystoke will be enveloped into more Scotch mist.

So for me a Hearts win.

The back 4 on Saturday could be:
Wilson/Varga/Virgo/Camara,although Mick might be back in place of the secondgreatestSlovakian.

One of the numerous attributes of thatSwedishguy was his eagerness to pressurise defenders in their own half. The other golden rule of defending is it's a lot easier when you don't give the ball away in the first place.

I have a theory about Noel's earlier posts, might be total rubbish, but might explain a thing or two about the order of submitted posts...

Could it be that when a post is submitted, it's submitted along with the time as it appears on the Computer's clock, so, if your clock is a minute or two slower than someone else's, it appears before that person's post, as it was theoretically submitted earlier? Is this the new easy way of assuring one's self the first post in any given thread...? ;)

dontbrattback 12:24, while with hindsight it might have been better, this would have meant Du hadn't featured at all by the time we were due to commit or not to the extra 3 and a half year deal, and I suspect WGS would have been rightly pilloried if he'd sent him on his way again with or without asking for an extension of the loan, having had him for the six months.

Yes, it would have been better to try him out earlier, but would you have thrown him on while we were only a goal up in many of our games immediately prior to the Clyde one?

  • At 23/01/06 12:42, Blogger dumbhoy said…

    Order of Posts

I've been having the same issue where I send off a post but it doesn'r appear on the blog immediately. Several other posts come in, then it appears in front of those one's out of synch. Loooks like some techy problem somewhere?

Great to match up to a team intent on harrying us the way Clyde did and then bossing the game.

Thought the pitch was poor which didn't help Naka's flowing game.

Ironically with Camara back Motherwell play a 5'6" forward on the right wing. Think wee Wallace would have coped easily with McBride (now competing with John McDonald for the Das Boot U57 prize!).

Have to agree with an earlier post regarding Boruc's distribution yesterday. At times he was passing it to players who where under immediate pressure.
Looked as though it had been decided beforehand to get the ball moving ASAP from defence, as Boruc usually likes to take his time to kick the ball from the deck.

    Jackd,
I also heard glowing reports from Tannadice regarding Charlie Mulgrew. It just proves what an inhospitable place Celtic Park has become when we're afraid to allow this boy a chance.
I think this loan was of mutual benefit as he gets some first team SPL experience, without the pressure, and we'll get him back as a more mature and experienced player.
As far as today's blog goes, Paul, ,I'm in total agreement. This was by far MON most annoying trait, making a double sub when behind in a game is not effective when there are two minutes left!
We must back our team, WGS will do the rest!
    Hail Hail!

    Paul67,

I think the two players substituted yesterday were taken off because they 'had' run themselves into the ground. Naka was 'nakared' and suffering with a bug and Zurawski, although lacking in match fitness, had covered every blade of grass twice.
The difference yesterday was that Strachan saw what we could all see and made the changes early enough to make an impact.

    Inspired or forced ?

    Who cares !!!!!!!

    Hail hail.

Mulgrew was very prominent in the highlights package shown by Setanta.

Returning to Celtic park in the summer with regular SPL expereince behind him can only help him. Realistically, would he currently get a prolonged run in the hoops? The loan move will hopefully be the making of him.

Excellent to see the team go back to the scene of two of our worst results in recent history and bounce back (yet again) from losing a goal. Excellent to see the defence hold tight except for the well goal which I dont think anyone could do anything about. Virgo has definatly given WGS a problem now as his performance yesterday was in my opinion the best performance this season so far from any of our defenders. Has to be a contender for one of the first names on the team sheet for the united game this coming weekend. Zurawski again showed what he brings to us, like you say Paul. I only hope he can keep his fitness from now on as he looks primed to bang in the goals after a stop-start beginning to his celtic career. On another point, Paul can you remind me, do we go straight into group phases next season or do we have to qualify again?

my first post since the game yesterday.... on learning the team, i was pleased to see MO CAMARA back.. the positive side of him in the papers during the week saying he will get backin the team, through hard work and effort, with his sole aim to please the manager.. that in itself represents what appears to be the opposite of agathe... with VIRGO in the side, i wasnt duly concerned as this game, like clyde was probably very like his brighton days.. in the wide open spaces of paradise, his defensive qualities will be put more to the test. he is stubbs like in his passing of the ball, in fact he reminds me of him in all aspects.. but yesterday, when all around him where pulling out of tackles.. he was the one who got stuck in..VARGA has never been one of my favourites, but in the spl he has been a success, albeit with decent guys around him.. i felt he was immense yesterday, not an immense performance in normality, but in the circumstances that meant he had to be chosen.. WALLACE is a good lad, but we all know heisnt a defender, would butcher have played a 5"6 inch player in that position if wallace had been playing??? i think not.. so well done WGS... this now brings me to MCMANUS, he like wallace is a good lad, but he is never ever going to be good enough.. his contracts up shortly, so let him go. let him see himself that this self confessed really good player, is in fact only average at best.. i for one will be dissapointed if he plays in the next game...TELFER is a shadow of the average player at the start of the season.. so he needs hooked, but its understandable that WGS didnt know how that defence would play on sun, so another du wei wasnt allowed to happen..its also nice to see that PEARSON for PETROV was bang on. WGS now knows what we all knew, that stephen can only play in stans position. but play it well..MCGEADY for NAKA was another one called right. all comments about the young lad appear to be similiar. but my feeling is that he will always be like this.. its not a robotic game, never will be, but saint martin liked the big lads who where robotic like, athletic, but our wee aideanho will always flatter to decieve, then have 2 or 3 world class moments, in a game.. i for one would rather that, than the robotic nature of others.. MY WISH WOULD BE FOR OUR FANS TO REMEMBER THAT.... fair play to the team yesterday, but a special fairplay to the management team.. i am starting to look forward again......

Great result yesterday. Really pleased for Virgo, Zurawksi, McGeady and delighted to see Camara returned at left-back. I'm sorry but I will never fathom the Wallace left-back "experiment". We are lucky that it did not cost us more or seriously destroy the young lad's confidence Also beginning to wonder if it will take a chisel to get Telfer out of the side (metaphorically speaking!).

Matt-is there not an issue about signing players from China,as opposed to say,Senegal, that their usefulness to the club gets distorted by commercial,as opposed to purely footballing, considerations?

It may be that WGS looked at the fixture and thought-
Opposition recruited through ad in local paper
Media focus will be on RK
    it's Broadwood,not the Bernabeu
    -what can possibly go wrong?
    therefore in goes DW.

He could have been debuted at home, but as noel has pointed out there's no guarantee that the crowd won't be in Circus Maximus mode, and it'll be pollicis versus all round.

In some of the previous games I'd have been more confident of the Blind Boys of Alabama holding onto a 1goal lead than our defence so your misgivings are appreciated.

We seemed to have painted ourselves into a corner with this transfer. With the Chinese league starting his club may have decided they wanted him back if we weren't going to play him.

It will be galling if he turns up next year at some Premiership team like Wigan, and is a success.

    Zurawski - Well taken goal
Lennon - Coming out of his slump
McGeady - Well up for it
Strachan - Took action when required

    - Points
Nakamura - Tired/not up for it
Petrov - Is his mind somewhere else

Other than that, can anyone confirm if Gabri of Barcelona is on a Bosman?

    Hi Paul,

    Long time reader, first post.
Regarding yesterdays result and performance a couple of things come to mind.
The defence in recent weeks has been criticised quite harshly but yesterday I noticed that the midfield let Motherwell run on to our defence all too often and as you have said many times before what defender likes forwards running at them?
We gave a solid performance but lets not get carried away, we still need improvement.

keep up the good work with this site, it's the only site I know I can see a balanced view of all things Celtic.

    Hail Hail

Overall if im honest, i thought yesterday was a shocking game of football, and i couldnt pick a man of the match for us.
I would still rather have the team from a year ago as opposed to todays team if it was a straight swap.
We have gone from winning every single corner or set piece to looking vulnerable at them all, if it wasnt for Hartsons head on a few occasions we would have been in trouble.
Yesterdays game could have gone either way, and probably would have stayed that way if McGeady hadnt come on.

After 5 minutes, i thought it was plain to see that Naka on the left and Maloney on the right wasnt working.
Naka was drifting inside, leaving the game very narrow, all our play went through the middle, and when Maloney cuts inside on the right, he has to play a square ball or play it back, because hes on his left foot.
I cant comprehend how or why Strachan left it like that, especially considering how close Maloney was on atleast a few occasions to threading the ball through, only for a toe nail to block it.

I agree that Marty never made substitutions in time, this was possible the only really gripe i had with the man, but i wonder if Naka didnt have a temperature all week, and was playing the same way, whether he would have made the change or not.
I thought Pearson was a plus when he came on, his pace allowing him to track back and block the ball, cutting out an attack before it happened, which hadnt happened all game before.

Incidentally, did anyone else hear that after the Clyde game, WGS was giving the players a complete roasting in the dressing room, Petrov, quite rightly in my opinion, got up and walked out, leave the guys who deserve to get it.
2 days later he rec'd a disciplinary in the mail, WGS took the opposite view, and looked at it as if we're in it together etc etc...

If Petrov walked out after Clyde he can walk out of the club. Don't recall him contributing anything that afternoon. No player should walk out of a discussion with the manager, but the only players that had any ground to that day were Zurawski, Maloney and Virgo.

Maybe Stan "World Class" Petrov is getting a bit big for his boots. He must be the first "£6 million +" "world class" player who I actually forget is on the pitch sometimes.

    Champions League group stage!!

    Not that old chestnut again.

Suffice to say we probably will go straight into group stages.

If the winners of this years Champions League also qualified for the group stage through there league position, then we will go straight in.

If this years winners don't gain automatic entry through their league position then we'll have to qualify.

We're looking for Barca, Chelsea, Lyon, Juventus to win the Champs League any other team and we'll need to wait until the last minute to find out.

Likes of Liverpool, AC Milan and others would need to win the league or be runners-up.

For the answer to your query about Charlie Mulgrew, read Noel 12.04 Williebhoy 12.09 and jungle ed 12.53

The "support" at CP slaughter youngsters at their second mistake. Aiden McGeadie is a perfect example. Young Charlie will gain invaluable experience and will come back a stronger and more confident player.
The solution would be to blood the youngsters with 15 minutes left. The A'holes will all have left by then! :¬)

Driving home with the rest of the lads yesterday I repeatedly commented about how big a result that was.

With 60 minutes gone in the game I was convinced the game was going to end a draw. The game had that aura. Celtic produced the goods yesterday and that result is every bit as important as the New Years Day Lazarus act.

Kudos to Strachan. He recognised changes needed to be made and he made the right ones. McGeady and Pearson both excelled when they entered the field of play. Their pace, and particularly Pearson's aggression, raised the bar.

I agree with Paul 67 on Zurawski. His movement is fantastic and creates an excellent outlet for our midfielders. He improves our team greatly. Three in three since his return. You can't argue with that. I predict he will end the season with 20.

Virgo was excellent. No nonsense defending, he knew when to play the pass and when to find Row Z. He isn't shy to put it about either. A run of games is what he needs now.

I take my hat off to Shaun Maloney. The wee man is all heart. He chased down every through ball and got back to assist Telfer at every opportunity. All this while taking a a torrid amount of punishment from the opposition.

I disagree with the poster who stated that Petrov looked as if his head wasn't on it. Petrov covered so much ground yesterday
for his team-mates. Lennon, who looks very jaded IMO and off the pace, would have toiled badly without him.

Camara played alright. You now what you are going to get (in a sense!). We certainly did not get caught out by the diagonal ball yesterday as we had done in previous weeks as he has the ability to win a header.

Varga performed admirably despite looking as sharp as a doughnut. He won't retain his place though.

Nakamura looked sapped of strength yesterday. He persevered despite the usual treatment from the opposition.

Hartson's personal problems have been well documented. I think that situation is taking it's toll. He looks miserable. Some things you can't contend I'm afraid. The goal should help him slightly.

Telfer's days in the starting XI are surely drawing to an end. We were savaged down the right hand side yesterday at times. The root of any problem that emerged. He has taken enough pelters so I'm not going to contribute any more.

Finally, Artur Boruc. Not a chance in hell for the goal. A little shaky with a few of those throw outs! The guy clearly a banter merchant though!

Petrov didn't play against Clyde, I think a lot of Petrov work goes on unoticed, he tracks back well and gets timely taclees in to break up the opposition moves.

Still it's a team game, if a discussing tatics surly it is down to everyone to listen.

Mid-field and CBs next week will be interesting, especially if RK's back!

    Chairbhoy ,

I agree , having viewed the match again , that Petrov does a hell of a lot of un-noticed work. He did break up play well and inter-linked most of the midfield passes. If he wasnt in the side yesterday most of us would say he was missed sorely.

As was pointed out in the pub to someone moaning about Petrov that in fact the guy giving the ball away cheaply a few times was infact Zurawski as both looked similar from a distance on the tv screen. Both seem to have a similar type of dodgy blond streaky thing going on with the barber. I most admit it did confuse me a few times.

    MIDFIELD DEBATE??

I watched on the telly and couldnt believe the poor performance of Lennon.
He was often caught in the middle of the park without the legs to track the runners, this resulted in Petrov having to do the covering in front of the defence which then limits his attacking play.
I dont know if this is tactical but I believe Lennon plays his best operating close to the back four denying space and intercepting the through balls.

Interested to hear from those at the match if Lennon did more off the ball not seen on camera?

If GS gooes with his head and not his heart he will install Keane i the middle and make Stan captain.

I admit it may be a bit harsh but he certainly was not the best tactician and some of his team selections where suspect to say the least (Petrov on the right?).

The games against Barcelona were a defensive herioc masterclass, I'd put that down to the players will to win rather than tactics. Saying harry them for every ball and don't give them a second near the box is hardly tactics - the ability to get the players to put in so much effort (although partly down to the enormity of the game and the players themselves) shows just how good a motivator he is.

I'm not sure what you mean about men vs. (if you're refering to the clyde game you can hardly put that down to tactics). The players were given logical instructions and failed to carry them out. Even playing their normal game we should still have been able to win the game and it is questionable whether or not the manager can be blamed for this or not - players on £20,000 a week should be professional enough to treat every game and opponent with respect some of the players did not do this.

Strachan has always highlighted the problems in the team.

What I should have maybe said was MON tactically at times was very one dimentional - if we started a match poorly nothing would change (unless Larsson, Lubo etc. weaved some magic)

    Baldymeister (from yesterday)

You talk about hailing someone as a Messiah.

Why should he have to be a Messiah?

MON was a GREAT manager but he was not flawless.

To me for "fans" to be actively against a manager who is doing a good job considering what was inherited and the resources allocated is absurd. Fair enough if a manager is not achieving what has been set out for him to achieve.

Artmedia was a shambles but I'd rest only a small % of the blame on the new manager. The players were unprofessional in their approach as they were much of last season (from January on anyway). With hindsight maybe he should have shut up shop but how many of us would have done so in the same position? We should have been capable of beating them home and away (as we showed at home) but it wasn't to be.

I'm not looking for Strachan to be a Messiah - a league title would do.

Rangers went through a rough patch but now are no worse than they were last year (they may actually be better) Hearts are by far stronger than they were last year and Hibs, Kilmarnock & ICT are all putting in good performances... the league this year is far harder than it was last year!

And we are looking good for the title - what exactly is it that Strachan doesn't have that you want? Celtic fan? Irish? Catholic?

We are currently very much a work in progress and a club in transition - we are shrinking the wage bill and bringing through youngsters - yet we look to be going from strength to strength and are top of the league.

The Bald Ego, just caught up with your points on the last thread. Totally agree with you on Telfer, I have slaughtered him for the past couple of weeks, just thought I should give him a bit of credit when it was due. His defensive positioning is generally good, other than that, not too much to offer.

On Big Varga, I thought and still do, that he was very poor in last seasons run in and the start to this season, I thought he was finished. But, I think he should hold the jersey at the moment, Gordon seems to keep guys in the team (with the possible exception of Telfer) if they have played well. I dont see Big Mick as good enough (certainly not in the last few weeks) to come straight back in for somebody who has played well.

I seem to disagree with most on this, but I didn't think Mo was an improvement on wee Ross, but his selection may have changed M'wells tactics - we'll never know.

I am very surprised to see Celtic arranging a friendly with Wolves,is there complete ignorance by those who arrange these things about how the fans feel about the injury perpetrated by one of their players on John Kennedy. SV's poor form and the team's poor defending can be put down to another of the side effects of BB's new contract. Gossip suggests that he took the huff when the mythical £28K was not offered to him.

Cue four months of the centre of the defence having all the look and feel of a bad marriage which was carried over into the AMB debacle.

Consequently it may be a case of SV + "anyone other than BB" and we may have a defence. How this will carry-over into next season is the big guess.

BB = His talent can't support his wages?
GC = Organiser / utility man either that or too small, too ordinary and too late?
AV = "Great white hope/Kojo's nephew" take your pick? Also a shouter/organiser?
Hopefully it is onwards and upwards for him from now on.
SM = "Malky MacKay jnr?" Bruiser who jumps 6" smaller than his stature would suggest? Interesting that some comments recently suggest that he does not merit a new contract. Bit harsh I think, change management and all that!
SV = Indian summer during the second half of the season.
    Short term at best?
JFK = Praying on the hour every hour.

Consequently how do you "asset manage" this pool of talent? No space for a CL level "mature" CB to be the new Pat Stanton? Or failing that Olof Mellberg if E-Tims is to be believed? He really is one straight out of leftfield especially if the cost is £3mill.

For what it's worth we do need someone to either add muscle/win headers if BB goes as limited he may be, he has both of these attributes in spades and he will missed.

Therefore any thoughts on the CB pairing for 12 months time?

    Leabgarrow, madmitch,

Varga, in my opinion has never been Celtic class, he was brought in to replace the best centre half we have had in the past 15 years (except maybe Marc Reiper) and to be honest he couldn't lace Mjallby's boots. The only positive we could take from him is that he was value for money, you dont pay anything you dont expect anything.

Not sure about the gossip though, Balde for all his faults was given the inflated wages for reasons we all know (he was essential to the team at the time and the best defender at the club at the time). Varga's just not good enough to get that type of money- if he doesn't know that he's delluded.

GC- as I said before not good enough for Celtic but hope he proves me wrong.

AV/SMcM/BB [delete as appropriate]. Not ideal but, the best we have to work with so far. JFK- I'm with you, get well soon big man.

The Experience Remains Priceless but it doesn't Compensate for a Lost Contract

Peter Halmosi could easily have been a Celtic player but he will remain at Debrecen. The 27 year old left-sided player granted our website (www.nb1.hu) an interview about what may have been the most exciting week so far in his life.

    - I don't want to cause you pain in your heart but it was a big opportunity . .

Believe me I know it, answered the Hungarian player who was tested from Monday to Friday by the green and white club that is among the top clubs throughout Europe.

I'm sorry this is how it happened, but I would lie if I said I wasn't prepared for it to work out this way.

    - Why! Do you know something that we don't?

In football today clubs will only pay for the truly big stars. In Glasgow I heard how Celtic recently signed three players and in only one case was there money paid, and then the Scots only paid a small amount of money. Two players were signed for free, whilst I understand the amount paid for the third was much lower than they would have had to pay for me.

Can we say that Peter Halmosi is an expensive player?

I think another way to say it is that I was expensive for Celtic.
[Note, what he said here wasn't exactly clear - it didn't make a great deal of sense in Hungarian].

As it turned out, the Catholics [yes, they believe they know all about the Old Firm out here] would have had to pay 1.5 million Euros for you. Tell us candidly, do you resent somebody?

No. More over, I said the Debrecen manager made the right decision. I think that I would have done the same.

But now you are only left to be happy with training with world class players for one week.

It's better than nothing and I'm very proud that I was good enough to do it. It wasn't my fault, Gordon Strachan made that clear to me.

    What did the coach say?

To start with, according to him, I am at the Celtic level and I could compete in Britain. And - it was a good feeling for me - he said that he was happy to have met with and get to know me.

Nice words, so you can tell it to your colleagues in the Debrecen changing room. Will it be strange for you to be with Tamas Sandor's (the Debrecen captain) team again?

Why would it be strange? I wasn't away for months. Anyway, it was fantastic to spend some days in Glasgow, and nobody can take that experience away from me.

Paul67/Kojo I threw a question/observation out last week re: The MLS Draft. Kojo - a real FOUNTAIN OF YOOF. I am all for outsourcing, this is a great pool of players that are in the main unaffiliated till selected. Can we tap into the FOUNTAIN? Maybe it can be set up as bi-directional send some of our seed to the MLS nursery to blossom in the FLA’ADA sunshine. These lads are technical advanced, Big, FIT, FIT, FIT and like lightning…and cheap(ish). Has anyone thrown a glance at this pipeline? Worth a conversation. Kojo know anyone at the Galaxay?
I would take Landon D or Freddie Adu into the team any day of the week.
Ok I will drop it after this. I have raised it two or three times without comment. It could be timing - I am a night owl in GMT terms. Also I am often at the tail of a dead thread. I wake up in the morn. And we have a new topic……..Change is GOOD. In case I forget Mexico is a fertile field these days too.

On a lighter note we have some celebrity look-a-likes in the team….according to one of the lasses in my office.

MALONEY– a ringer for Justin Timberlake…..STARS IN THEIR EYES AT CP.

I am also disappointed that under Mr Strachan we have gone from being very solid in the air ,in our box and very threatening in the air in the oppositions box.To being vulnerable and ineffective.

This is one of my main concerns, along with the fact that we are lightweight.

I had hoped that Mr Strachan would look for a couple of players in the Mjalby mould.

He has mentioned the fact that the side cannot become too small.

I am therefore disappointed with signings of Wilson, Caldwell and Miller.

Yes there are exceptions to this train of thought e.g. Maradona,Carlos,Jinky.etc.

But by enlarge, if you check the balance of the physical stature of the best sides in Europe you will find that their players are physically stronger than ours and taller.

MON realised this ,and we competed with honour and success against some very good sides.

P.S. How could you possibly know that Stan was disciplined and the reason for it?

Don't think Brian McLean turned down Scotland. Don't think he was ever offered the chance. WRT Aiden I think many of us might have made the same decision in his position. This is a Pity....... Landon Donovan ......a wonderful midfielder.......and only 23 years old............
He had a tie- with Bayer Leverkusen, up until last year...... but he left Germany and returned to the U.S. ....He hated the people in charge at that club... I believe he could be procured for 2 million Dollars.

His parents are Canadian and his Father is a Cel'ic Man.

Fargo does know him personally and has visited him and his girl friend...she is in the Entertainment Industry.

They live, along the beach from SANTA MONICA..... in a seaside city.
Whether Celtic should pursue or will pursue him, I do not know....
But he would be a great addition...as you well know..

He is way, way out of the range of Celtic's Pocket book.

I say that he is right NOW.....

I believe he is 15-16?? years old......but he is a very mature character.

No player should get booed for playing for a country he is eligible to play for. I would criticise anyone who chose to boo young Brian McLean as much as I criticise the abuse young Aiden receives at a lot of the away grounds in Scotland.

The point I'm trying to make (perhaps not very well) is that the abuse Aiden gets is disguised by apologists as it being a result of him choosing another nation over the nation of his birth.

Any dates for Newcastle for Shearer's game?

Very pleased after yesterday. Although the first hour wasn't the best football I've ever seen I was impressed by the fact that we dug in. Both Telfer and Camara made good interceptions from FB's point-of-view, but Telfer gets caught with the reverse pass inside too often. Varga did well considering, but isn't long term solution as he is too slow when passed. Glad to see Virgo coming in and doing well. I'd like him to get a decent run now to hopefully cement place and please this other pseudo-Seagull.
McGeady sparked the team to life ably assisted by Pearson. Maloney never lets us down (thought Joke Brown's comments harsh in the extreme) and a bit more protection from the ref would help him.
Zurawski makes a helluva difference. Needs a player like this for the WGS experiment to work.
Not getting carried away but result every bit as significant as New Year. Bring on United and big Brewster.

Radio SanFran Tic? Didn’t you hear, podcasting killed the radio star.

Kojo, the Mexican leagues. Why not? Always look for value.

Players in general get far too much abuse these days.By abuse I dont mean groans of disappointment etc, but crude, personal attacks. What makes me laugh (in disgust)is if a player reacts to it, the abuser becames all precious and offended and runs off to tell tales.

I honestly don't know where the Halmosi deal stands right now. My guess is that things have cooled over payment terms and we are now witnessing a bout of brinksmanship.

Prior to going over to Scotland, it was reported that four clubs (Celtic, Crystal Palace, Blackburn and Everton) had registered interest in Halmosi but that none had gone as far to make an offer. So with a year left on his Debrecen deal, the Hungarians clearly have time against them. If no other club makes a move before the transfer window closes (and there is no sign of him going out to any other club), one would think that they'd return to the negotiating table. Otherwise, Halmosi's value to Debrecen will drop considerably and they'll miss out on much needed revenue.

As I said on Friday evening, the summer deal for Zurawski was also protracted and this may just be PL ensuring that there are apropriate checks and balances in the payment schedule to avoid us being stung should Halmosi fail to settle.

Given that there's no word at all from Celtic on Halmosi, should we assume that he remains a possibility?

A Hungarian friend, and keen Celtic supporter, reckons we should do our utmost to sign Halmosi. He thinks that 1.5 million Euros is an absolute bargain. But then Varga is one of his favourite Celtic players so the Hungarian connection clearly rules his mind.

    Evening gents

Congrats Paul on the piece and the technological breakthrough.....Now I just need to find out what a podcast is and see if I can tune into it with my CB!!

    Paul
With the summer weather fast approaching-- it must be nearing CQN t-shirt weather is it not?....another groundbreaking move me thinks in the not too distant future...Will Noel be the first proud owner of the limited edition tees?

    On the footie front:

Coming to terms with my dislike of the KM signing...(barely)

Still chuffed with the result yesterday....not the greatest of performances but a good result at what has been a tough ground for us in the past....

I thought Maloney(he just gets better and better), Virgo and Zurawski were the star performers..

A weak performance from Naka but the man did have a virus so can be excused....

I thought BBJ was good in defence but immobile as always in attack....cant wait for the summer....(unless wgs can convert him to a Centre Back ;-))

I read the comments on Varga and was a bit surprised...although he did better than I thought he would he still looks very slow and gifted opportunities to Motherwell on a few occasions...Bobo and Virgo for me...

And Mr Wilson's time has come...

    ST Anthony...

I recently looked into the China game and couldnt find much on it...could you fill me in with some details if poss....

    Keep the faith...

PS www.sixtee7.com is back open for business

PS Is the word 'dulcet' ever used without 'tones?
Just a thought that is irritating me...

Dulcet as well as meaning "pleasing to the ear" can also be used as being "extremely pleasant in a gentle way..."

Thankyou for an excellent example Rumoid.

Kojo. A couple of months ago I watched the play offs between New England and New Jersey...Interesting bout between two managers we are all familiar with (a certain Mr. Johnston and a Mr. Nicol). I was amused by their headphone interviews while the game was still playing. The standard of play is most certainly improving.

Talking to Americans about 'soccer'. Yes it is becoming more popular they say. But some have pointed out that the sports seasons here are already taken up fully by traditional american sports. I posted a couple of weeks ago about being approached by three separate African Americans who were disgusted with the whole game of Soccer because of a report on HBO about racism in European game. They were angry, and had no time for the beatiful fgame as a result. I was left speechless for once. Could not defend the game I love. One sizeable chunk of the market here was neutralised by that program...Real Sports with Brian Gumbell....

Kojo, thought your observations in Hamell was interesting. Think it was a few weeks ago that some English club were keen to sign him but not for the 100grand the well were looking for him. One hundred thousand isn't alot to pay for someone that can play fullback AND leftside midfield? Not a bad crosser of a ball. Won't even need to break the bank with wages as well??? Wadja think

Does anyone have any info on the forward were after?

Been reading some posts and anybody thinks that McManus should get his place back in the team needs there head examined.

The only place he should get is a place in the reserves they guy is never Celtic claas.

As i said to many people today if Varga was beside Du wei in the Clyde game i reckon you would have seen a better performance from the man from China.

Virgo praised Varga yesterday with regards how he helped him through the game by talking to him and using his experience.

It was Varga that also went to the Nou Camp with JK and helped him through that game then Ibrox as well.

Give me Varga anyday over McManus.

It’ll be interesting to see where things go in the next couple of years with the media business models up for grabs.

Cheers for the info on the china game btw...

Didnt see the aformentioned banner...did hear "Pearo's a provo" being sung though....presumably from the same section of the ground...

Cheers PJBhoyNyc...I must have learnt something in those English lessons after all (I certainly missed out on the Grammar lesson)

    My dear friend,Mick,

It is MUCH MORE THAN INTERESTING,my friend...... It is bordering on the Riveting!!

Why do you think,in the game yesterday, Maloney was playing on the right, instead of our other matchwinner, NAKA?

    Simple, Really.....( WELSH HULK)

Maloney was considered a much sterner Bulkhead against the Dangerous Incursions and Damaging Depredations, involving the Celtic Defense,of the skillful Mr.Hammell, than the much less effective( in that category) Naka.

So, obviously your point and mine, has been highlighted by the Tactics EMPLOYED BY THE Li'l ADMIRAL!

Yes, Mr. Hammell was a target during the last Summer WINDOW of opportunity.......

    Kelso, was Sure!

But the QUARRY, was left, uncaptured,at that time.

Mebbe a further Nego, could bear the desired fruit.......this time round........
    Who Knows??

St Anthony - Re. the New Zealand game I skipped a lecture to go see it, we were rank, and my car got broken into on the Springfield Road. An afternoon to remember !

Firsby hoop - even if Didier doesn't try a leg he might still get a contract. I've watched the last two matches involving the team managed by "English's brightest young coach" ... and they are rubbish.

Hammell? No thanks. We are steadily beefing up the squad now. We have to be careful not to fill it up with SPL level mediocrity. Two stars in the summer please.

Just wanted to post my agreement with WGS. As much as i hate to be negative about any Celtic player, i think that Mcmanus is no better than very average. In every good central defensive partnership at least one of tha pairing needs to be a leader who shouts and organizes. It's also a great help if either or both are comfortable with a ball at thier feet and can make a pass over 30 yards. Neither Bobo or Mcmanus meets that criteria.

Of the two you'd have to pick Bobo as he's at least a better defender but I hope Strachan continues for now with Virgo and Varga, they earned the right on Sunday for the opportunity.

    VertWolf, interesting idea.

Celtic Quick News has yet to generate a penny of income, and costs are within the bounds of reason.

The podcasting could change this; the press conference lasted less than 2 hours, but cost $15. Hmmm. My 1 minute audio from today cost less than $2 (so far).

I am mulling things over at the moment. I really want to push ahead and see where we can go next, the podcasting is only the start! Google Ads are under consideration to offset some of the cost. What do you think?

The Pixel Page was an outstanding idea, which never occurred to me to copy here. Thoughts anyone?

Let me know what you think Whitedoghunch.

Centre backs, I'd go for Bobo and Virgo with what we currently have, though I hope Big John K steps in shortly to shake that up.

Are we really going to ban photographers from training? Is it a swipe to get more favourable press or is it just reactionary and will blow over? If a ban is in place is it selective, do we allow Japanese, Polish etc. access?

I do my best, honest! But, one of my favourites was stopping a wee guy into my class for not being properly attired. He had a Rangers top on, circa' 87, McEwans lager and all.

On the back he had the letters "McOist". A shame! I really didn't have the heart to tell him myself. I mean its an affliction itself being a Rangers fan without being dyslexic as well. At least you do something about dyslexia...
