Strachan confirms Gary Caldwell signing and ends speculation of Iverson and Eremenko coming to Celtic

After many months of speculation Gordon Strachan today confirmed, “Gary Caldwell will be coming here in the summer.

“There are two agendas here at the moment; one for the future and one for our immediate situation. This week we have signed three players we believe can develop into good players for this club in the future.

When asked if the arrival of Kenny Miller would mean John Hartson leaving Strachan said, “Absolutely not. You need four good strikers if you want to be a top club. You also need variety in your play. Miller coming will not mean we want to lose any of our current strikers.

The defence continues to worry the manager, though he suggested the problems are not restricted to the back four, “It is easy for us to blame the back four, but you defend as a team.

“Kenny Miller defends from the front with his movement and pace.

Strachan would not confirm if Mark Wilson would start against Motherwell, though I suspect he will. I also understand Keane and Virgo would play in central defence.

The manager also put a couple of transfer rumours to bed, saying Stefan Iverson would not be coming to Celtic, and that interest in Lecce midfielder Alexei Eremenko ended after the player failed to turn up for a trial.

When asked to comment on the fact that Rangers wanted to sign Kenny Miller, Strachan said, “We don’t play those games here. Kenny Miller had other options, that’s all we want to say on the matter”.

A refreshing change from the infamous, and wholly incorrect fanfare when Fanfan signed for Rangers, and David Murray was fooled into believing he was signing a Celtic target.

Defence choices this weekend will be interesting. Wilson in for Telfer? I would have thought Wilson would start on the bench but then again he has played 150 SPL games so is no stranger to what to expect. Left back will be interesting. Is Camera back in the fold again after some fine reserve performnces?

I'm surprised to see that the reaction to Caldwell signing is so much better than the reaction to KM.

GC is not a player I rate particularly highly, at center back or right back. The guys not good enough for Scotland!!

If the signing of Halmosi does materialise then WGS may have three of his defensive four picked for next season already:

    Wilson Caldwell anon. Halmosi

Just speculating, but that would leave a summer budget to recruit the two posts we will definately need filling - centre-back and centre-mid. I'm sure Bobo will leave this summer and, sadly IMO, Stan Petrov is seeking the exit door. Any other funds, gained from sources such as the CL(hopefully), could be used to bulk the squad.

Paul, would I be right in saying that the summer will bring two Champions League-esque players to fill these expected gaps? Given today's news regarding Caldwell (a decent signing who is better than Balde, Varga or Virgo, IMO) I think I can see what WGS is trying to do here.

If my thoughts are on the money, I doubt there will be the same negative reaction to our summer signings as there has been in many quarters to out winter ones.

So far next season looks like:

    Boruc

    Wilson Caldwell anon. Halmosi(?)

    Nakamura Keane anon. Maloney

    Zurawski Miller

IMO, Boruc and Zurawski are the real deal. Magic, in particular, will prove this during the run-in.
Keane needs no comment. Add one experienced centre-half and we could have a spine that would be envied by most. With Naka and Maloney rebounding off the sides it certainly whets the appetite.

The future does not look that bad from my vantage point. Again, as I said a couple of days ago, let's see where WGS takes us.

We have a forced change with McManus out and possible injury wory with Keane. I can't see GS making two or even three changes to the defence even though i think Telfer could do with a wee seat on the bench for a few weeks/seasons.

    Probable defence :
    Telfer Keane Virgo Wallace

    Though i would go with:
    Wilson Keane Virgo Wallace

Fair doos Paul, as John Lambie would say.

Without appearing to be desperate to hear the fanfan story but surely there is no better time than now? A more vulnerable time for tfod means something bad (worse) has happened to them and the fanfan story runs the risk of being buried. Better to tell when fanfan is still fresh in the mind and especially in view of signing KM and GC on pre-contracts. Also because DB at the Herald resurrected the spurious "rangers pinch worldclass defender from under Celt's noses" guff...I mean story ;-)

There is a good piece on Joe McBride's signing on NTV (1965)

However, Stein had also swooped for Motherwell's Joe McBride, his first of many inspired purchases, tormentor of the Celts in the previous season's Scottish cup semi-final, a move which would turn out to be the equivalent of signing a combination of Marco Van Basten and Gerd Muller.

platowasatim 2:29, with respect, what makes this board so special is the informed debate about the club we all love, not a bunch of wannabe kids clammering whether or not they put their hand up first. I mean, look no more than supercelt's postings in the shortlived thread earlier this afternoon, where first he posts, then in his secong post admits that he's now actually going to read what he was supposedly replying to.

And it's not a longrunning tradition on this blog, either, it's only been here for a couple of months.

And it's not sour grapes, as I have been the first poster on here, last summer, I didn't give it a second thought, though.

    whitedoghunch,

I think it could well be October 66, because I do think that is the league trophy and the league cup, as well as the Scottish Cup. That would be more like it, with regards to George Connelly being in the back row. Besides it would explain Willie Wallace not being there. He came in the December, I think.

I agree the first post nonsense!
should only count when a post that is worth reading, and contains at least one full sentence should count.

I think the throwing of Virgo into central defence when he has been overlooked in the past is a little unfair. Why was he and Du Wei not given a half or twenty minutes earlier in the season. Virgo and Keane on paper looks imposing but if Motherwell play as well this week as they did against rangers we may have to score 3 to win.

    Mon the Hoops!!

Well if you ask me (I know, I know), being 24th is more important than first!! 8-))

    NE Bhoy
Neither Virgo nor Du Wei managed to get realistic runs in the team previously because it was planned to get them on for the final quarter with us 2 or 3 goals in front.

Due to our defensive frailties suddenly reappearing (after the Dunfermline game), this was never an option.

Result - when we needed them, they were not ready to step up from the bench.

I ain't going to blame them for that, but I have stated time and time again that the lack of a proper left back was the root cause of the nerve wracking matches that have ensued.

There - that's my tuppenceworth, I am now away to hide behind the sofa so that the bad boys can't shout at me. No, no, don't try to stop me.

On several occasions I have been asked “Why”. “Why not” appears to be the only complete answer.

My favourite time on Celtic Quick News is reading when the goals come in after I get back from a game. Lots of atmosphere emanating from the page.

    My friend

Obiter dictum is latin basically for by the way, which is something I am told I say a lot so when I saw what Obiter dictum ment I thought I'd use it (okay I know I'm a sad git)

Obiter dictum An incidental remark or observation; a passing comment.

[Latin, something said in passing : obiter, in passing + dictum, something said, from neuter past participle of dcere, to say.]

    adumbrate \AD-uhm-brayt; uh-DUHM-\, transitive verb:
    1. To give a sketchy or slight representation of; to outline.
    2. To foreshadow in a vague way.
    3. To suggest, indicate, or disclose partially.
    3. To cast a shadow over; to shade; to obscure.

No Telfer at centre half (or anywhere on the park, for that matter).

I'd sooner play Suzanne Varga there.

    Wilson Virgo Varga Camara/Halmosi

Come to think of it, Maloney would be better at centre half than Telfer. At least Maloney knows how to tackle.

    NumptyBhoy 2:16 PM,

You might think it is just one wee farty, but it can be lethal. From this year's Darwin awards -:

Nominee No. 5 [Bloomberg News Service]: A
terrible diet and a room with no ventilation are being blamed for the death of a man who was
killed by his own gas emissions. There were no marks on his body, and an autopsy showed large
amounts of methane gas in his system. His diet had consisted primarily of beans and cabbage (and
a couple of other things). It was just the right combination of foods. It appears that the man
died in his sleep from breathing the poisonous cloud that was hanging over his bed. Had he been
outside or had his windows been opened, it wouldn't have been fatal. But the man was shut up
in his nearly airtight bedroom. According to the article, "He was a big man with a huge capacity
for creating "this deadly gas" Three of the rescuers got sick, and one was hospitalized.

Assuming he's fit, and in the hope that the hysteria has finally died down, Sunday is a massive game for Roy Keane. Two things he was predicted to do before signing: galvanise the side and not accept a below par performance against inferior opposition; and be a steadying influence at the back. Failed on both accounts so far. Time to stamp his much vaunted authority on a game.

    Hello Everyone,

Not terribly enthralled by either of our summer captures so far. If both were coming in January I would think that they would bolster the title challenge but as long term targets I think we should be aiming higher.

It doesn't bother me at all that KM used to be a captive of Snake Mountain. As soon as he pulls on the hoops I will give him my usual 100 decibels of support. I have some reservations about his ability but until (and if) he is rubbish in a Celtic top I don't want to be too critical.

GC, I don't think is any better than Stephen McManus and I don't think playing both at Centre Half will help either of them develop. We have top quality players in all areas of the pitch except defence right now (Boruc, Naka, Petrov, Zurawski). I think we need a top notch CL standard player at centre half to compete in Europe and be comfortable domestically.

So I suppose that the January Sales are not over yet and WGS needs to be bargain hunting for defenders. I fear more shaky results like Dunfermline and Clyde unless we find a replacement for big Johann quickly!

    Port Bhoy

PS: Please WGS, start with Mark Wilson on Sunday!

Was it Clyde that said Stan would be gone by last Tuesday? Consider the source -lets wait and see. It is possible that it is true. The law of averages dictates that if the throw enough stuff out there one will turn out to be true.

This one? Maybe....I would like substantiation from elsewhere before I deem it credible.

If we are to sign someone, then unless it's a total bolt out of the blue it's likely to come from the list compiled earlier by Len Brennan. (thanks Len).
I'd either like a quiality defender (although I'd happily wait until the summer for this) or Robbie Keane.
