Strachan faces a very personal test at Motherwell

I remember watching television highlights of the first league game of the season at Fir Park. After Motherwell scored their fourth goal, the camera panned to Gordon Strachan, who looked a forlorn figure.

Two days earlier, following ‘that’ night, Strachan spoke of his need to pick the players up and get them organised for the challenges ahead. The loss of four to Motherwell appeared to condemn Celtic to a season of disarray and failure.

Irrespective of his abilities as a football manager, Gordon Strachan was tested as a man in the weeks that followed.

At the time, I was concerned that he could hold things together and recover. Many were calling for his head there and then, even the more positively disposed among us could only sight the pragmatic problems of sacking a manager two games into a season.

Not only did he recover, he has reshaped the team and got them seven points clear at the top of the league.

If he makes as much progress over the next five months Celtic will become a formidable team. A victory at Fir Park would be an important staging post.

Surely a victory at Fir Park is an expectation? Then again the same could be said for Clyde and Artmedia.
Strachan will be judged at the end the year by most fans I think. He has to redress the Euro embarrassment to gain any credibility. I hope he does it.

    Congrats Cultsbhoy.

By the time we kick off on Sunday there's every chance the gap at the top will be down to 4 points. A victory is a must, a victory with a good defence display might help to remove some the doubts that have began to creep in to some recently.

As I've said - WGS will be judged at the end of 2006 when he will have redressed Euro shame hopefully. If he has sold KM for a lucrative profit (I nurture the delusion that this is the real plan!!) and retained Stan in the process - I will take back all my condemnation and even lead the 'Save WGS campaign' should he ever come under threat threafter!!

    Somehow I don't think so.....

    Good point Paul,

Who would have thought after Artmedia and Motherwell at the start of the season that we would be in this position.

WGS has done better than most of us believed. However, it can be argued that competition in the SPL has been weaker than expected.

There are tougher tests ahead for WGS and Celtic. A win on Sunday is important.

    Lubo.

Anyone got any updates on the Keane hamstring rumour? If it's true, then we better have our shooting boots on for Sunday....5-4 to the Hoops!
Still, it's much more exciting than last year's drudgery. I ALMOST felt like not renewing the season book after watching that "entertainment".
Good luck to young Wilson on Sunday.

Cultsbhoy can I ask what age you are?

Your blinkered view of progress in Europe and nothing else matters reminds me of me back in the '80's longing for a quarter final to look forward to after christmas. My first Euro tie was Ajax 2-2.
Sadly the 80's and 90's came and went without such a night.
You are right to point to Europe as the be all but I must say sadly 2001-04 were exceptional years rather than the norm.

    Paul67's words.

I've often wondered why in the FIRST real challenge that he faced, was John Barnes not cut some slack? Poor management by MacDonald & Dalglish? Or other reasons.

Why bring this up? Well, compare & contrast:

    Barnes's team is papped out out of the Scottish Cup, and dressing-room problems become patent;

WGS's team is papped out of the Champions' League, and dressing-room problems become apparent.

If Bratislava was the making of WGS,

Why, if anyone out there knows, was Barnes not given the opportunity to turn the ship around?

I notice that the official site is mentioning the Keane injury and the fact that Varga might not be ready. It is even suggesting Mark Wilson in central defence!

We could be looking at a defence on Sunday of Telfer Virgo Wilson Wallace.

My money's on 5-4 to Celtic!

  • At 21/01/06 00:43, Blogger bigtrainpete said…

Three points on Sunday essential, performance not important. Given recent results at that dive a 1-0 will suffice.

Any further news on Keane. I have a suspicion Varga may be recalled.

Varga? Can WGS really go and ask a player he has totally discarded.

I don't think we can. If Keane is unfit we have a serious problem. A month loan deal for some other clubs cast off may be the only solution.

    Mikeybhoy,

If he's having a sleepless night, it's hard to have any sympathy.

We've known for months Bobo would be away and it was inevitable that McManus would eventually get suspended with the way he plays the game.

As for Du Wei, he was there for 5 months and only allowed 45 minutes of first team action. If he's been deemed not good enough for the first team, surely this should have been established during those months of coaching and an alternative plan put in place.

I just hope he's spending his night coming up with a plan to ensure a win on Sunday!

Yes, WGS has turned things round since that first day at Fir Park, but Lubo makes a valid point, the competition has at times been weaker than expected.

Is Keane out with a hamstring injury?
If this is the case, then questions should be asked of the current training methods.

Too many players are falling to the same type of injury.
Focusing on physical fitness at the risk of properly warming up and down could be the cause of the recent injury list.

After the start to the season we had, you have got to give WGS some credit. He has stuck to his guns and turned things round, its not been pretty at times but the fact is we are top of the league and seven points clear.

The fact that the currant buns have been rubbish this season, has IMO definately bought him some breathing space. I dont think the support would have been so tolerant if they were above us in the league.

I think he has done a reasonable job so far, but as MON once said the huns are the benchmark, this season he has been fortunate they haven't been. yours John-b or should that be Barota.

    Corpachbhoy 1:26 AM,

    With all due respect,

"the fact that no other team has touched him with a barge-pole speaks volumes" .. about what and whom?

JB (black and English, no prior managerial experience) costs CF tuppence ha'penny as a result of ICT game, and finds out who's for him and who's agin ....

WGS (white and Scottish, limited prior managerial experience) learns the same lesson in CL at the cost of .... 10 MILLION?

For the avoidance of doubt, CFC's conduct with WGS has been nothing less than admirable, IMO.

I refer you to my original question: why is WGS capable of learning how to cope with hard questions, but not JB?

Maybe JB, to paraphrase you, just didn't have what it takes.

    Your answer doesn't persuade me.

Your article at the top of this thread prompted me to have a scan of comments during and after the last outing to Motherwell...

Sorry Paul but although there were many reactionaries calling for his head, there were many thoughtful and regular posters who put things in the proper perspective. Many contributors to CQN have taken the long view and recognise this as a season of change. ENORMOUS CHANGE.... (Sorry 'transition' has become too hackneyed a phrase and its true meaning lost on some).

The manager said it himself today when pointing out the twin track approach required in the current climate... There may well be more bumps in the road as he strives towards his own personal vision for Celtic FC....While winning the 2005-2006 SPL with a hybrid team. Sorry but that is what it is.

Given the changes forced upon us this Sunday I think a win will be a HIGHLY significant result...I also believe winning the SPL this season will be an enormous achievement....One we will achieve...I hope when that moment occurs everyone will recognize it for what it will be...

    An Enormous Achievement...

Just watching the MLS draft on TV. Do you know the rules here re: grabbing these guys before they hit the MLS? Is it poss or are they bound by this that piont? Has our scouting network access to the show/ overall process? These guys are very very good 17-18 yrs old.
I am still a little fuzzy on how it all works. I think the MLS not the teams own the players. It is an odd setup.
I still think someone should look at the Mexican national team / league......some fantastic players...lower expectations regarding emoluments too I would wager. Since there is no established heritage in gracing Euro fields...Hugo Sanchez aside….therfore no baseline wage outside Mexico…

I was at motherwell the first time and have me tickets for tomorrow and i agree we MUST to win. However i have to disagree that winning this league this year is an enrormous achievement.

It has to be the least expected after spending 7 million during the close season and playing against the worst huns team in over a hundred years.

Hearts sacked the best manager in scotland and replaced them with a man with a lot to prove in many ways.

Hibs have a team whilst young and talanted with a tendency to make jeckl and hyde look a stable individual.

The rest are dross full of journymen suitable for english Division 2.

In short we are up against crap teams in a crap league.

It's harsh but if Strachan does not win this league he will be sacked and rightly so.

That said i hope and pray we do win and Stachan leads us into Europe where he owes us one.

Anyway come on the hoops and have a good day all.

Corpachbhoy, comment deleted for language violation. Remember children read Celtic Quick News.

John Boyle O’Reilly, I think John Barnes was doomed from early on. The whole picture was not looking right, from McDonald to Dalglish to Barnes. The way money had been spent and the ‘football direction’ from the Director of Football was clearly wasteful.

Inverness was a clear opportunity to sort the problem out for the board, one they may have been looking out for anyway.

    Good call PJBhoynyc.

    From the previous thread:

Kojo - I have no firm knowledge of the whereabouts of Peter Halmosi. The plan, as I understand, was that he would return to Hungary on Friday, whether he signed for Celtic or not. I suspect (and hope) that the lack of any announcement from Celtic means that the deal is still alive and that we are merely witnessing a bout of brinksmanship. I recall the summer signing of our Polish striker followed a similar path and I don't need to tell you how tough PL is in the negotiation stakes - a very good man to have managing our financial affairs.

Timmy 7 - Becketts will certainly show the next OF match. Get in touch closer to the time and we can hook up on the day of the match.

Last year we lost the league. Now so-called Celtic fans are demanding we win it or they will turn on the manager. Shameful. I get the feeling some of these bitches want Strachan to fail. Do they not realise that means that we all club, team and supporters all lose out too? Support the team not your “I told you so agenda”.

From the Telegraph article, available above:

Meanwhile, Hungarian international Peter Halmosi has returned home after Celtic refused to pay the £1 million fee his club, Debreceni, wanted for him. "Their owner is being completely unreasonable," Halmosi's English agent, Andy Kilner, said. "Gordon wanted the lad and Peter wanted to move but it's dead in the water as it stands."

From experience, I won't be surprised if Debrecen start increasing the price on Halmosi (a strange tactic I've encountered whilst negotiating with Hungarians) before they realise they're dealing with people who've been round the block a few times and have the scars to prove it.

There is a widely held view in Hungary that the Scots are tight-fisted (so much so that "Skot" is an adjective for mean and miserable). This may inform the Debrecen position and they may simply be angling for the best possible deal they can get. I'm certain that they would appreciate the income - Hungarian soccer is not at all well funded, with low attendances and poor television revenues, that make the SPL seem positively lucrative. They will also view Celtic as a giant club capable of splashing the cash.

If we remain focused on how the transfer fee will be divided between the interested parties, I'm sure we'll be able to reach a deal. From what I understand, Halmosi is really up for this move (and who wouldn't be in his position) and the agents also want to push through the deal.

I don't think this is the last we'll hear about Halmosi.

Your assertion that " even the more positively disposed among us could only sight the pragmatic problems of sacking a manager two games into a season" ignores the fact that there were many of us who recognised at the time that the right man was in place to carry out the major surgery required at the club and that whatever the intervening mishaps he would lead us through to a bright future. It was just simply the fact then that amongst the cacophany of grief following "Black Sunday" and Artmedia that those voices were not heard or were ignored. There has been an unfortunate similar reaction to the signing of Kenny Miller.

Regrettably, as I said at the time the CQN editorial stance was not helping. Damned by faint praise came to mind.

Fortunately time has begun to prove that this work in progress is well worth persevering with and regardless of any intervening hiccough the end result will please. Of that I have no doubt and repeat very firmly that my colours are firmly pinned to the WGS mast whatever the result on Sunday.

A victory at Fir Park on Sunday would be nice but it would be better on your part I believe to assert that regardless of the result WGS has shown enough so far to indicate Celtic will become a formidable team under the present manager.

Just reading over all the Halmosi stuff, and I am moved to pose this question: Is the players agent slagging Celtic, or the Debrecen club chairman?

Has something been lost in translation perhaps, or are we just unwilling to stump up that kind of cash for a player who according to some reports is out of contract in the summer? Can someone confirm that this is the case?

Like a lot of you, I was also intruiged to read about Kirsty McCabe, and I hope that her little jibe has not cost her her job. Go on girl!!

BTW: Strachan was immense last night on CelticTV when talking about the Scottish press and their role in the Du Wei situation. He accussed them of naked racism - and said that they have shamed the country. Keep The Faith has a rather good article on it for anyone who wants the exact quotes.

    http://www.keep-the-faith.net/index.htm

This club of ours, which used to take so much of this stuff on the chin, has become very effective at striking back against the media when they act in such a fashion. Add to this Peter Lovenkrands claims yesterday that the story about him being attacked is FOUR YEARS OLD and you see the way they will twist anything. Strachan, lets not forget, has never been part of the Old Firm madness, and when he was first appointed I wondered, on these boards, how he would cope with the diabolical behaviour of the media in this country. MON was always in danger of being portrayed as a paranoid "Celtic man" because of his background - but I wondered how the press would deal with a guy like WGS when he found out what they were about and called them out on it.

And he is demolishing them. Sensational, wee man. Sensational.

Much credit should go to the Celtic fans themselves, of course, like this website and others, the Association and the indepedent groups for the way in which they too monitor the press these days and try to get the truth out there.

The future's bright. The future's Green and White!!

The Kirsty McCabe thing this morning reminded me of listening to Radio Five Live 3 or 4 years ago when Celtic first played Fulham in a pre-season friendly.

Victoria Derbyshire was asked what she was up to at the weekend and she replied she had went to watch Fulham and Celtic. The other presenter then said "I didn't know you were a Fulham fan", to which Victoria replied along the lines of "I'm not, I've always wanted to see Celtic live to see if it's as good as everyone says - and it was wonderful. Now I know why." She also added that the bit of Irish in her family background made her feel right at home among the Celtic supporters.

From then on Victoria Derbyshire could do no wrong in my book.

Then history took a swing for the better - Fergus then Mon and suddenly we are where I feel we should be - contesting Europes, 2nd level cup.
Now I fear we are regressing back to the era of anti-climax and dissapointment. Sorry I can't be happy about that, if I could I'd be welcomed in to the CQN 'hug club' happy that we are winning a two horse race year in and year out.

My guess is that Piere and WGS are at one on the Halmosi deal. I suspect that it's the owner of the Hungarian club who is angling for more cash or better payment terms.

Earlier in the week Halmosi's Hungarian agent was at pains to stress that the quoted figure of 1.5 million Euros was not a realistic transfer fee and he thought that a figure of half that amount would be enough to secure his signature. This was widely reported.

If, as reported, a fee had been agreed between Celtic and Debrecen then something may have changed. It could be that Celtic don't think he's worth the amount orginally agreed or Debrecen have decided to up the fee. However, the way in which payments are structured is a more likely stumbling block at this point in proceedings. I could imagine Debrecen want most of the money up front whilst Celtic would like to have some clauses that offer protection against the guy turning out to be a dud. We've all seen good players failing to settle in and I think Piere and WGS understand this risk as witnessed by the Du Wei situation. If they are not happy with the deal on offer then they are right to hold out until they are satisfied. I think this is an approach that we should be commned them for, however much we need that left-back spot filled.

JonG, I'm not sure a 4-5-1 is in Gordy's thoughts, although your argument is compelling. But if we were to go with just the one up top, I'd rather have someone a bit more mobile than BBJ. Beattie would be ideal stature wise (for holding the ball up), but as he's injured, maybe it's time for Magic to show us how he can lead the line.

However, I'd personally still rather go with two up front, because unless anyone's confident we can keep a clean sheet, we probably need that extra bit of bite up front to get the points.

Thanks Derbyshirebhoy, it's great to be able to offer a persepective from Hungary. I've been in Budapest for 15 years and Celtic have never, to my knowledge, been linked to a Hungarian player. Furthermore, they've only played one Hungarian side (MTK) in that time, ironically coming right after Seville to the annoyance of my brother who felt obliged to make the trip out here.

I mentioned earlier that I used to report on Hungarian football for a local expatriate newspaper. However, after the 1994 World Cup in the US, I became somewhat disillusioned with the quality of the football played here - it was attrocious and I subsequently gave up watching it. It's a shame as otherwise I'd be able to give a better account of Halmosi's abilities.

For the record, Hungarian football has improved somewhat in recent years but with the advent of satellite televison and Channel 67, I much prefer watching the bhoys. That said, I'd be happy if Halmosi signs, it would further encourage my girlfriend's boy to follow the bhoys. I took him to the aforementioned MTK match and on Boxing Day he made his first trip to Celtic Park for the Livingston match. Perhaps it's a sign of a relationship blossoming between Celtic and the Hungarians:)

I'll continue to keep you all posted to the best of my ability on developments out here.

Although i think WGS favours BBJ in that role.

I see this as the best way forward as we are distinctly understrength in the centre of defence.

However,WGS is the manager, and it will be interesting to see which line up and which formation he favours.

Halmosi plays on the left side and his position is usually dependent upon the quality of the opposition. Against better sides he plays left-back and against weaker sides he's pushed forward into midfield. This would appear to match Strachan's requirements of a full-back who can push forward when needed.

Yesterday I posted an article that contained a photgraph of Halmosi wearing the no 3. shirt for Hungary. I also believe he played in this position when Debrecen met Man utd in the CL.

This has all the signs of very good scouting but I can understand any caution on the part of the Celtic coaching staff. With the exceptions of Gere at West Brom, who is a fantastic player, Lisztes in the Bundesliga, and the Crystal Palace keeper, Hungarian players have not made much impact when playing abroad. Of course, there was a guy called Puskas who made a bit of an impression playing for Real Madrid but that was during an era when the Magyars where truly exceptional. Anyone recall England 3 Hungary 6, the former's first ever defeat by an overseas side at Wembley? (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/football_focus/3224468.stm).

Kojo, Buda is the original settlement and is both green and hilly. It is consequently favoured for its air quality and is considered ideal for those who aspire to a more laid back style of living.

Pest on the other hand represents the heart of the city and it is where almost everything happens in terms of business and entertainment.

In this day and age of car travel, an interesting paradox emerges. People live in Buda in the belief it is less stressful but everyday most of them form a long and congested line of traffic to head across the river to their work places in Pest.

I live in Pest, work in Buda and commute by bicycle but I'm uncertain as to what this means.

Two WHITE MEN, forced themselves over the threshold and beat him severely.

After ransacking the house they left.....I believe they took nothing....

Bob Virgo, died TWO WEEKS LATER.

Yes, it was a terrible blow,as one can imagine.

    Kojo @3.51,

I have to echo Derbyshirebhoy. That is tragic news about Virgo. God help the lad. Here's hoping he and whoever make up our defence tomorrow acquit themselves. Hearts losing eases the pressure a bit. I'm my usual nervy self already. By the way, I do hope we play Magic because he brings out the best in Nakamura and Maloney. Still, this all pales into insignificance with the news of Adam Virgo's loss.

I do hope we're still trying for the Hungarian. He seems the business. Appreciate Ian from Budapest's input.

The Boumsong issue and its like is for me a continuing endorsement of why I'm grateful to have the likes of a Peter Lawwell managing our financial affairs.

It also re-inforces my long held belief that in the larger markets such as the EPL its only too easy to spend large sums of money simply because its available. Value does not necessarily follow.

I've also always believed that its possible for Celtic to be able to build a side capable of competing on the European stage without spending enormous amounts of money on players. It is however essential to have a good youth policy a good coach in terms of the training ground and a good scouting network. That's exactly where Celtic have placed themselves and another reason why I fully endorse and will support Gordon Strachan as our manager.

Brighton fans would have gone crazy if they found out that their prized asset left for anything less than £1.5m and Celtic supporters thought they were getting a decent young player for £1.5m.

With regards Virgo - i felt the guy was not good enough, but to be fair to him it is still early days and if he has had family worries then a dip in form is understandable. I hope the lad does play tomorrow and puts in a commanding performance - however the reason strachan has left him out is not due to the family problems, its due to his form due to the family problems - perhaps a good performance and support from the stands will aid in the long healing process of losing a loved one. Heres hoping for both Adam and for Celtic.
