All the best Mr Sutton.
Our chances of landing a place in Pot 2 of the CL are looking rosy on an unrelated topic. Had a look at Stevie21's link. Do we still have to negotiate a qualifying round should(when) we finish as champions?

Well done, Chris. Thanks for the memories. Not sure about asset management, though. £6m to £250k?!
Hopefully Bobo's contract has a similar opt out which can be exercised at the club's discretion!? Wishful thinking, I fear.
Also re the FanFan story, I assume, Paul, that you are referring to the player which Murray signed ;-)

Really disappointed to hear of Sutty's seemingly imminent transfer although I can't understand why he would choose Birmingham (except for having a fistful of cash thrown at him).
I think that he has really spat the dummy with WGS & PL when they tried re-negotiating his final year option. Hence the swiftness of his departure.
However, pride comes before a fall and he may not realise this until it's too late and he is playing in the English 1st division after B'ham get relegated.
That said, it has been a pleasure watching him for the last 5 and a half years and he will go with my best wishes and thanks for his massive contribution to the Celtic cause
-
Must add to my brief post of earlier that the big man was my first pick week in week out after Henrik and was a tremendous player for the Bhoys ever since day one at Tannadice all those years ago.
All the best Chris but it is time you moved on for the both of us.

Fairwell big Sutty. Thanks for the memories.
Anyone else seen the "Video" providing infamy for some of our players?
-
For me big Sutty was the King's best strike partner. He's not been the same since he left for Barca. I think he's missed Henrik as much as we have!
-
If Sutton is for the off, then I wish him all the best. He has been one of our most consistent players over the last 5 years and has been an inspiration to others around him.
Sutton's OF debut will last in my memory forever.
Awrabest Chris.

Happy New Year everyone.
Congrats Big Joe
Robbie Keane just scored a cracker for spurs, not that keen on him, very injury prone and his price has just soared!
On a serous note: Did anyone traveling to swynecastle on a supporters bus have problems entering the road were the buses park? Edinburgh Plod wouldn't allow us to turn left once we'd turned right off Corstorphine Road. Wanted us to head up to Haymarket then along Gorgie Road, thru hertz scum and past Main Stand. Pure madness. Needless to say, as someone who knows the area, we refused and parked elsewhere.
This is the first time in years this has happened. Next they'll be making us exit via Gorgie Road!

If Chris Sutton has gone, then many thanks for some great memories. I'll remember him as a Celtic great.
I think it was Martinobhoy who summed it up in the last post:
"I know the expectations of the Celtic fans ... That is to win things and put Rangers in their place."
You truly did that Big Man!

-
Does Big Chris leaving mean a bid for Derek Riordan? Even though we've got Hartson, Zurawski, Beattie and Maloney, Magic and The Beat are injured more often than not and Maloney is more effective in midfield. £400k would probably get him.
-
Chris Sutton was a GREAT player for Celtic.
Despite all the great goals/great presence in the BIG games, I don't know if the crowd ever picked out a song or a chant for the big man.
Hopefully, he'll get a last run out at Paradise and get the send-off he deserves - and I'm sure,as an Englishman, he will have learned a lot - not only about about us the supporters, our situation here in sunny Scotia, but also about our Celtic passion for what we love and believe in.
Good luck, Chris, we'll miss you, sincerely...
Now go show them all in Engerland what a real Celt can do !!!
-
it's not worth the bother.
Mr Hartson has categorically denied any wrongdoing. No story.
-
Off topic but has anyone viewed the singing video which appears to involve Hartson and Pearson? I'm being very careful with my words here for reasons which will be obvious when you see it. Didn't hink it appropriate to post a link here, but it can be viewed via gersforum.com. I hope my first impressions are incorrect. If not then look forward to this being front page news.
-
Chris Sutton done the business for the Celtic.
Like Alan Thompson a scorer of important goals especially against Rangers and in Europe. A big game player.
It is a challenge to the proponents of asset management to exlain where we get a better player than Chris Sutton for less money.
Effective asset management rather than efficient asset management means that the team should be strengthened by the additions to the pool. It is possible that given Chris did not feature in our last two Old Firm victories we have improved the ability of our team to perform or they may have been sub-standard Rangers performances.
Interestting question as to whether we will be better placed in Europe with Roy Keane and Shunsuke Nakamura in our team rather than Sutton and Thompson. Would they be a less expensive duo?
I might have preferred to go have Sutton in the team in the run in and European games next season.
Economic reality etc etc, but I don't ever remember the Old Board or Fergus McCann seeking to renegotiate the terms of an agreed contract. Did Peter Lawwell say to Chris Sutton, "Chris, my dear amigo, we have a little problem"
I do hope they will not use this strategy with the fans at any point. (Obviously except for the comments at the AGM where Peter Lawwell said he would not be returning to the fans for more money then coming along with a share issue)
-
i dont think i have met another celtic supporter who has anything bad to say about sutty.
i even loved his interviews.
He did not bum and blow in them but done his talking on the pitch where you could see his true emotions.
A legend imo.
-
Muppetbhoy,
I agree with you. The Sutton/ Henke partnership was the BEST striking partnership that I can remember, certainly in my generation. I can't think of a better Celtic partnership. I'm sure someone will correct me.
My lasting image of the big man is the smile on his face after scoring the first of the 6 goals against Rangers.
He has been a great player for Celtic. An honest man who did not try to hide his thoughts or feelings, like it or not.
Goodbye big man. And Thank you very much for your contribution to the history of Celtic.
Lubo.
-
Sorry to see Chris Sutton leave but, as they say, nothing good ever lasts!
Despite all the great goals and assists my abiding memory is when he marshalled the defence brilliantly at Ipox when we were struggling for defenders.
Good Luck for the future, hopefully not with Birmingham after six months, cannae stand them.

The transfer fee might not be the greatest, but having his wages off the wage bill 6 month early will probably give us another £750k'ish to play with.
Sutton was a £12m player - we just happened to get him half price :) Excellent value over the 5 years IMHO.
-
Hello again,
ant1973,I hope we sign another player for 6million who stays 5yrs,helps us win 3 leagues,(should have been more)4 cups and gets us to a European final, then he can go for £250,000 and it will still be good asset management,as far as I am concerned.
Well done bigjoe,who is bigjoethepurebigconman.:-)

Chris Sutton
My favourite other quote from big man was when David Tanner asked him on Sky what had made Celtic champions and Chris straight faced replied "We got more points than anyone else".
-
Historyreader, I disagree with your interpretation of events:
Celtic are not looking to “renegotiate the terms of an agreed contract”. Celtic have an option on a contract which they have chosen not to take. They included this option to allow them an ‘out’ at this point.
They believe they should be offering a lesser amount (which I agree with).
This is well within the terms of the agreement with Chris Sutton, and looks like business has been conducted honourably by all parties.
-
Thanks for that muppetbhoy. So we should, all things being equal, have a guaranteed source of revenue from Europe next year. Not to mention a chance to qualify for the latter stages....it's a chance to put a stranglehold on the game up here.
The right transfers in the close season should cement that grip.
-
Hello Paul and fellow tims
Sutty has undoubtedly been a great servant to the Cause and has been magnificent in the big games against Rangers and in Europe
Faavourite of mine was when he chipped the ball over Klos in the last O.F. game of 2003/04
But I now feel that leaving it suits both Celtic and the Big Man.
We need to move on, and give the young boys a chance. And Chris just hasn't looked interested this season.
But overall, a great player in one of the most successful periods in Celtic History.
-
I know nothing lasts forever, but it's still a sad day when someone you respect and admire moves on.
I think the fact that Steve Bruce reckons Sutty could be the man to dig them out of a hole says it all. He is a fearsome competitor and a real winner. In these two aspects of his make-up he is second to none (and I include Roy Keane in that statement).
I'm sure Andrews, Pressely, Webster et.al. are all very glad to see the back of him.
Fairwell Chris Sutton, and many thanks for the memories.

RE the aforementioned video,
It seems to have been filmed last year in Donegal when the players were all smashed after the Jackie McNamara testimonial dinner.
A general singalong ensued, which included Fields of Athenry. Some clowns decided to add in some phrases which have no place in that song.
Now some Rangers forums are going into meltdown over whether any players joined in at certain bits.
The quality of the videophone footage is appalling, and its ownership unknown. Despite claims to the contrary, it would be impossible to prove in court that anyone sang anything.
So any media outlet faces a potential £1million bill for damages and legal costs if they make any allegations against any players.
No doubt the club will hold its own behind-closed-doors inquiry.
Players will no doubt be warned of the increasing use of such videophones in all public places.
But since it would be impossible to prove anything, we should grant everyone involved the assumption of innocence.
And mention it no more.
Let the followfollow crowd stew in their own bile.
-
Re: the video, the sound and picture quality is terrible, but basically it looks like a man of v similar appearance to BBJ is with a few fans singing "The Fields". The fans add in the lines about the IRA and Sinn Fein, but you can't see whether the alleged BBJ sings them.
FollowFollow (horrendous gers site) is alleging Pearson and McGeady are also there- but it is so unclear as to be useless.
FF are sending the video to everyone from Heather the Weather to Walter Kronkite- so expect some pondlife journo to pick up on it.
Paul, re: Sutton, my info is that he believes he had a verbal agreement that his option would be exercised at the same rate, and he feels Celtic have reneged on a verbal agreement.
-
i recognise the first one as Maloney, whitedoghunch, and is the fourth one Enricco Annoni?
-
Paul, checking through Newsnow you got it right on Chris Sutton's contract and its options. I'd still prefer to have him in the team next season and I do think he could have made a better job of the defence if given the chance.
As regards asset mangement, a 32 year old player is expendable in those terms and I can see that Gordon Strachan could well be ambivalent about him going while Peter Lawwell will be estatic.
Do folk think that Keane and Nakamura will be more effective than Sutton and Thompson, next season?
-
well said johnboy.
I was sent the video by a friend but would not dare show it on a celtic forum or any other public domain. As innocent as the bhoys may be it would do nothing but harm to our club by others who would use it.
-
brilliant whitedog!
who is the artist?
-
I take a simple view.
Sorry to see big Chris' time come to an end, but 30k per week is a lot to pay someone who doesnt look interested anymore.
He'll leave a legend and i have some great memories.
I hope he keeps his respect for the club and allow the fans to keep their respect for him.
He knows the agenda of the media here in Scotland. If he is leaving under a little cloud, with a grievance or what he feels are unfulfilled 'promises' made to him re his extension,.... whatever, id prefer he gives the media nada.
Good luck for the future big man
-
Cheers big Chris - you've written your own chapter in Celtics history. I'll always remember you fondly.
But.....
You tarnished it slightly when you decided to walk with a deliberate handball after your mate was sent off at Ibrox and you havent kicked a ball since - thanks for the 3 and a half years they were memorable. Good luck and enjoy. No hard feelings i hope.

a message for big sutty
-
While I have plenty of time for Sutty , I think it is time for him to move on. I don't subscribe to the sentimentality that most Celtic fans attach to players, maybe Peter Grant who will probably play for nothing. The rest are only wearing the green and white shirt because they are very well paid. How many of these players, Lennon apart and possibly Keano, will give the club the time of day if we were in financial difficulty and their wages went to the bank late. It was not too long ago that Celtic players went on strike , refusing to do promotional events, interviews or charity function because they wanted a slice of the money that came from TV revenues fron the Chanpions league.
It is this sentimentality that makes the Celtic fans an easy prey for the tabloid. Put any headline and the Celtic fan will buy the paper and even believe it. Before you know it they will be protesting that the board should do this or that give the manager more money to spend, etc. The usual outcome is this generates more headlines and more papers are sold.
Sutty while he has done a good job has been injury prone over the last couple of years. For a £30K + weekly wages that is not a good investment. If he is not willing to take a lower pay then Thanks for the memory and all the best. Previously we have wasted scarce resource on ageing players just because we feel we owe them. We don't owe them: they were well payed for the job the did .. in fact they owe the fans because coupled with their enoumous pay packed they will probably not want for favours just because they have worn the hoop.
Hopefully Alan Thompson will follow Sutty , he has had his day as a Celtic player and have not contributed enough in the last 2 years to justify his salary ... we must move on (Even George Best -my hero- was cut loose my MAN U once the prowess starts to wane).

Paul67,
Do you think Celtic would ever consider encouraging a club to take Balde off us by agreeing to pay a part of his wage - or even offering Balde a golden goodbye like Keane got, to encourage him to sign elsewhere?
On £29K a week not to many clubs would be interested in him, but at £15K/£20K per week they might bite.
I watched the Celtic v Villareal game on CelticTV tonight and was appalled at Bobos inability to pass a ball effectively to an unmarked teammate 10 yards away. He also nearly cost an early 2nd goal by trying to dribble his way up the park before being robbed (shades of Livi the other week).
Obviously Celtic take a hit with this, but I would view it as money being saved rather than lost.
I grudge the club paying Balde these high wages (although not Sutton and he was on a bit more I'm led to believe).
I also think that the new wage structure being introduced (is it a £25k max cap) will actually be good for the the dressing room with less of a gap between the first team squad. Someone told me that the Spurs wage structure is capped at £20K, which I find hard to believe, unless they are talking about just the basic wage, and pay higher win bonuses than most (appears to be working on current form).
-

All of what you said plus how about we find someone and sell him on for £6m next time! Now that's what I call good asset management!

best Sutton moment for me was the header against Ajax.was sitting level with the post...what a goal...Celtic moved into new level with O'neill and his bhoys.....one of my favourites..life goes on good luck big sutty

Yes, THAT goal against Ajax, followed by volley against Juve, then last minute against TFOD. 3 classics. Nice one against the Hertz last year in the cup too. A stormeragainst hibs away in a 4-0 gubbing. Lots, now I come to think of it!
I remember when MoN signed him. A Rangers supporting colleague of mine compared his signing unfavourably with TFODs signing of Kenny Miller.
By all accounts a guy you did not want to play against. Bang on after the Kilmarnock game too.

St Gris & Phil 01
I agree that we got 3 good years from Chris and he got well paid for that. The past 18 months (since the departure of Henrik funnily enough !) we have got very little...... 2 goals from 9 part games this year.
Whilst I understand and appreciate the job he has done for the team, I think it should also be acknowledged the job Celtic has done in rescuing him. It should not be forgotten he was going nowhere at Chelsea and would most likely have been another statistic at Birmingham or Fulham for 5 years had we not come in.
Just as there is the outpouring of appreciation for his contribution on the blogg, and will be no doubt in the mass media tomorrow, hopefully Chris expresses his sincere appreciation for all Celtic has given him too.
The Huns might feel they are the winners from this but they have not watched, or paid for him for the past 18 months. At £30k per week the value might have been there 2 years ago, I have not seen it for a while, and worst of all the attitude has also been noticably lacking since his petulance at Ibrox November 04.
Chris and Celtic have been good for each other in the same way Henrik and Celtic were.
-
ItaliaBhoy, if anyone tells you that Chris Sutton paid his agent to arrange a contract (which he did), but left a very important matter to a verbal agreement, please correct them.
It is very far fetched.
Historyreader, Keane has it all to prove, as I am sure he is planning to do. While Chris has been great for Celtic, the writing is painted in six foot high letters on the wall.
He has missed an enormous amount of football this season and last. Time to move on.
MikeyBhoy, paying part of Bobo’s contract to get him off the books would be dangerous. I would prefer not to.

Hi Paul,
A very happy if belated new year to one and all, I've had PC problems and am running a system made of old parts just now. since then I seem to be having a problem posting, maybe a good thing as the last big debate was more an internal supporter one, but when I try to get a post my system crashes, this is the first time I've managed on, can any of you techno wizards give me a clue :-)
JohnBhoy :- You say quite rightly that some Rangers sites are going into meltdown over this, I can understand that and would imagine that if this position were reversed this site along with several others would go into meltdown, however I do agree with you about the players being given the benefit of doubt unless proved otherwise, and would hope that they are the victims of an unfortunate set up.
Burnley78 :- Yourself and a few others have mentioned the phrase, the huns will be happy about this, though you argue against it, one point I would make is not so much will we be happy with it, that will depend on who replaces him, but is this a sample of good asset management or another step on the slippery slope of inferior players being brought in to save money, from someone who has watched it happen I can tell you it's a dangerous slope.
-
I suppose that must be it then.
Sutton, Thompson, Agathe, you are all just a waste of time and you should be sold because of your amortisation value!
Well let me tell you how much I love you!

It may be time to move on for big Chris but his contribution to our team over the last few years has, in my opinion, been second only to Henrik. He's given us some brilliant moments.
I especially remember when celebrating the 6-2 win in my local boozer on the outskirts of Glasgow. We decided that merited 3 pints of heave a bottle of champagne much to the annoyance of the huns in the pub!
Been there about an hour and in walks big Chris in his celtic tracksuit with his wife, brother and all his kids. All the kids wearing the hoops with Sutton - 9 on the back.

big sutty certainly put rangers in their place. but its time to move on. wgs doing everything right. no major clearouts but a gradual release of the old guard. any chance we could get tebily in a swap ;-)

Gutted by Sutton going. Reckon the decision to let him go will be blow certainly for the CL next year.
Big Chris was always a big game player and i fear for us next year in Europe with the squad we have at present.
The squad is too light weight and i don't mean in the numbers. All the quality players we have lost(Larsson, Moravcik, Mjallby, Lambert, Valgaren to a certain extent and now Sutton) have never being replaced with the same calibre. Naka excluded.
All the confidence for a crack at Europe installed over the years is slowly dwindling, unless something dramatic happens and WGS pulls a few quality rabbits from the hat.
What kind of signal does this send to Petrov ? Wouldn't be suprised if Stan decides to take stock and see what options are open to him.
What has happened to the "quality of the team staying the same"?

I'm grateful for Sutton's contribution but I feel he struck a good deal with Celtic - both sides keeping their end of the bargain. The club rewarded him financially and perhaps most importantly in helping to restore his reputation. I don't feel a great deal of sadness as I think his best days are now well behind him and Celtic should not be building any future plans around Sutton.
Make way for new blood... but who?
-
Goodbye and best wishes Mr Sutton if you've taken your final curtain call for us - a true Celtic Gladiator.
I remember my brother, the darkest of dark sheep who supports the Dark Side of the Moonbayers, chortling and scoffing the day we signed you.
He never did again after you put his lot swiftly to the sword.
In latter years he even grew to grudgingly respect and fear you - could see the whites of his eyes when you walked onto the pitch. Praise indeed. ;o)

Welcome back Edward --I began to fear that you had been court martialed and shot for fraternizing with the enemy

From Official Clyde Website:
Volunteers are required on Wednesday morning at 11am to place covers on the pitch in preparation for Sunday’s game with Celtic. Clyde General Manager Robert Hannah, confirmed to the website that the club is employing a company to provide additional covers for the game. “Their staff will be there to assist and provide guidance but this is a task that always benefits from as many people helping as possible.”
“It is essential for the game to go ahead and the weather is set to deteriorate again however with these additional covers we are confident that the match will go ahead.”
Looks like the weather could scupper Keano's debut as the forecast for Sunday is Sleet with a temperature of only 3 degrees. Hope the covers work.

If Chris Sutton does leave tomorrow it will because he chose to go not because Celtic decided to move him on. He has a contract until the summer and I am sure an offer of an extension at a realistic wage.
My guess is that he has seen the writing on the wall and knows if he remains at Celtic he will only have a bit part to play - at Brum or another struggling club he can become a hero and be handsomely rewarded for it
He has long been one of my favourite players and in the Euro games in particular he was often the perfect foil for Henrik
Good luck Chris and thanks for the memories

Sutton
A real professional who sees that a new challenge is needed. If he ends up with Birmingham he will have his work cut out to revive a side who have only scored 15 goals in 20 matches. Only Everton have scored less in the EPL.
He leaves behind many fond memories for us all. My own favourites include but are not limited to:
The 6th goal against Rangers from Stephan Mahe's cross.
The last minute goal against Rangers.
His header against Blackburn at the second attempt having just missed on the opposite post.
His undoubted pleasure at his goals especially against Rangers.
I hope we will all follow his future exploits with interest and genuine affection.

Chris Sutton - a real hero. Big game player. Winner. Celt.
I'll miss the big guy. The number of truly big moments he brought us was astonishing. However, as the years went on, the number of games for which he was available diminished.
At 100,000 pounds a game this season, it made no sense for the club to agree to pay that amount for another year.
From Chris's point of view, some of those missed games were due to a serious face injury (more serious than has been made public)....and this injury had nothing to do with age.
Free agency often benefits the players. Clubs, in this post- Bosman world - should never be criticised for using it to their advantage.
All that being said, there is no point in losing quality, if we do not replace it with quality. We had real quality in Mjallby, Lennon, Lambert, Larsson, Lubo and Sutton.
Now we have Boruc, Petrov (yes, Petrov!), Nakamura....and maybe for a short while in Keane. Maybe not in this window, but in the summer, we need to bring in some more real quality.
But thanks, Chris. A true Legend!!
-
What can we say about Chris Sutton
A true Celtic legend both on and off the field. Easily MONS's best signing and worth every penny of that £6M.
Henke's best strike partner and a great defender to boot.
Unfortunately past his best and we can now send him back to the EPL. Isn't good that we get the best years out of a very top player and then when he is coming to the end of his career we can pack him off to another league to top up his pension, instead of the other way round.
Farewell Chris, All the best
-
Good bit of business for Celtic and Chris despite Scotland Today last night (sic) trying to put a "supporters unhappy" spin on it.
On a different topic, just when you thought the Keane hysteria couldn't get any worse he is being praised for his loyalty to Celtic before he's kicked a ball :-) (phil101, 1038)

Hopefully not true but the Scottish Daily Express is running with the story that big Sutton has left Celtic on a free transfer.
The article goes on to say that Celtic were looking for a transfer fee but have allowed the big Englishman to leave for Birmingham on a free.
Here's hoping that this is just wishful thinking on some hum hack at the Express.

Long time lurker, first time poster!
Chris Sutton was a fantastic 'tic player who if he goes - and I hope he doesn't - goes with my thanks and best wishes.
Paul - good blog, keep it up.
-
A few random thoughts:
1) For all the complaints about Bobo from most of you... they generally focus on his poor passing. In general, if I was to pick defenders I'm slightly more interested in their tackling ability. Bobo is the only defender with the athletic ability to actually tackle. And he can win a header. NONE of the other current defenders can do this...
2) That's why McManus is not good enough - jeez for a tall guy he was beaten at that second goal by about a foot.
3) Sutton has barely played for us now for about 2 years. I for one am delighted the funds can be reallocated. Now for my late Xmas wishes I'd like someone to be prepared to take Thomson off our hands.
4) On WGS - still have to say the jury is still out. The Hearts game was turned around by bringing the direct Pearson on for Petrov. A change WGS would NOT have made except for the injury to Petrov. Lets face it we obviously intended flogging Pearson... suddenly WGS has changed his mind after his match winning performance.

Big Sutton was my favourite Celtic player of the past 5 years & while it's sad to seee him go, i have to be honest & say it's better for both parties that he moves on. He doesn't have the same influence as in his first 3 seasons & we can use the money to address the 'Carry On Defending'
Players can't play forever as we've found out with Alan Thompson & paying Paul Lambert a years wages to go on FIFA coaching in Germany should be a painful reminder of how not to use available funds.
Good luck to you at Birmingham Big Man
-
BromleyBhoy
So the jury is still out on WGS…...…..what would prevent your Jury from bringing in a Hanging verdict?
WGS stated immediately after the game that Pearo was coming on with or without Petrov's injury, you must have seen it, it was covered by all the media. Please do not be so mean spirited and give the guy some credit. I do agree with you re Bobo - the guys who want him out have all got very short memories.

I may of course be wrong but I remember reading that the SPL champions will qualify directly into the group stages of the CL only if the winner of this year's competition is also the domestic champions of their country.
-
A warning to all who are going to Broadwood for the first time on Sunday - if the game does manage to go ahead. The stadium sits in its own wee Arctic circle; I have played football on the astroturf pitches there in Spring and there were sideways hailstones. If it is 3 degrees in Cumbernauld it will feel like -10 at the stadium.
Wrap Up Warm
-
Welcome Mcgubligan and thank you for your kind words.
apesanteur, almost correct. We will not know for sure if the SPL winners will automatically qualify for the CL Group Stages until this seasons tournament is over.
If the CL winner also qualifies from their own country, the SPL winners will almost certainly be there.
-
Hi Paul
Chris Sutton going will be a sad loss. He has been a true hero in his time at Celtic. However, he isn't the player he once was, and £30,000 a week is a lot of money for a player spending most of his time in the physiotherapy room. I wish him well.
Like quite a few people on this blog, I am still not convinced by our defense. I have to include Bobo in that. Despite being big, and athletic, he simply makes far too many costly mistakes. If we are going to splash out on any new players, then this is the area we need to be improving during this transfer window. The defense may have improved since the summer, but lets be honest. If we were up against a Barcelona, we would get slaughtered at the back.
I'm also wondering if Alan Thompson could be on his way by the summer. Yes, he has been a great player in is day. But his best days appear to be getting way behind him. He's far more likely to be booked/sent off, than scoring these days.
As for who we are bringing in, well that's a shot in the dark. I don't subsribe to the nonsense spoken about Robbie Keane. He's too expensive, and too injury prone. As usual, the press will be full of al sorts of rumour and inuendo.
January should be an interesting month.
Hail Hail

Hi there
Just been announced on the official Celtic site. Chris Sutton has left for Birmingham. No price was mentioned
-
BomleyBhoy
In my opinion the best Centre defender at CP is Chris Sutton, as a supporter I’m more interested in having good footballing talent available than the tenets of asset management. If Sutton isn’t fit then it does make sense that he moves on (maybe the reason for a free transfer – any news on a medical?) if not why are we loosing a versatile, effective big game player – I’d have loved to see him in the hoops for at least another season.
Have to agree to a certain extent with your WGS, in the first half at Hearts could not decide if I was watching Dutch total football going badly wrong, or 11 headless chickens (Yes I do include Boruc the first 15 mins was the worst I’ve seen him play by far). Still the thing that did win us the game was sublime dead ball play from Naka, (does anybody know why Maloney was taking the free kicks?), hats of to WGS for eventually finding a replacement for LUBO
Lubo
Strangely quiet reaction to your post – suggests many agree – I don’t though, it was a great partnership but my vote would have to be Deans and Dalglish, maybe green tinted glasses but remember them scoring hat-tricks for fun!
-
Best wishes chris ,
Although I would have preferred that you give the support an official send-off good luck on your New job. You Where a great player.
There's a good article in the Scotsman by glen gibbons on the "Celtic Evolution" if anyone has the paper.
-
Key words in the announcement from PH - Celtic can confirm that Chris Sutton has left by "mutual consent" to join Birmingham City.
Mutual concent means allowed to go on a free.
Not good business sense at all.
/Bishop B
-
Goodbye Chris.
Favourite memory was when he came on at halftime when we were getting a doing from Barca at Parkhead. He changed the game so much they had to bring on The King to win it for them...
-
Keano parted company from manyoo by mutual consent so we definately have lost an opportunity to make at least £200K.
Just can't understand this one at all!!
/Bishop B
-
Chris Sutton's move is probably best for everyone.
CS will be remembered as a great Celtic player over the last 5 years.
In the last couple of seasons he has missed a lot of games but he was generally still an influential player.
Some people including myself have questioned his body language recently. This may have been due to playing while not fully fit or playing out of position.
The good thing is that this situation has not dragged on. CS leaves as a ledgend with his reputation intact.
Perhaps other impressive contributors over the period will look on this and decide it is also time to move on.
Better to leave when still a hero.
I hate to sound like Chick Young but we will go for Zewlakow of Anderlecht if we do not get our first choice full back this month.Unfortunately I do not have a clue who the first choice is!
-
-
thismancraig -
Don't you think better business sense would have been to save approx 750K in wages while at the same time bring in 200K in a selling price as well?
I just think it is like so many players we have brought in in recent times, we never seem to make a feckin' bean back from them.
And that my friend is not good business sense!
/Bishop B
-
Thismancraig ,
I was just about to post on similar lines. Your quite correct in that chris left us last year. Good deal for all concerned. Thommo and didier and varga next and the slate is wiped clean. Out with the old era in with the new.
-
I'd put big Chris in the category of players that the fans admired and respected, rather than loved.
He had some big games for us,especially in tandem with Henke.
Going for my birthday visit to the cinema with the bairns.
Thanks to Peter Jackson over the past few years it's been the LOTR trilogy, and today it's King Kong.
Not going to give my age away as I know how ageist the blog can get[and it's too depressing]but my favourite strike partnership is Mcgarvey and Nicholas.
-
Len brennan ,
Maybe Celtic's hands were tied on this one. WGS recently stated there was a "hitch" in the contract. Maybe going for free is that hitch?
-
BBC has just confirmed Sutton left on a free.
Why do Celtic give quality players away and end up paying fees for the likes of Telfer.
If B'ham wanted him that badly surel a nominal fee of 300,000 would have helped the Parkhead coffers.
Good luck Chris Sutton.
-
big liam -
If this was the hitch then again we should be shooting the contract writers.
Must have been the same mug who gave Balde the stupid contract that he received.
However I'm sure the reported Hitch was something to do with a minimum fee to be paid to Celtic which was quoted as being around 200K.
/Bishop B
-
To those lauding the business acumen of this deal, let's just say the jury is still out.
I will keep a very open mind, but if Sutton's £28k per week goes on signing 3 Mo Camara type players, will that be good business?
Let's see what January brings.
-
Len, I understand that hence deleting the post however I think we have done the right thing.
Say for example we had said 400k or else and then only Everton matched it. Chris could have signed a pre contract tomorrow with Norwich and told us to beat it. After all, we have been unfair to the big man by attempting to renogotiate his deal.
Peter Lawwell has over the last 6 months delivered on everything, all our summer signings on favourable contracts, image rights, Keane, Boruc etc.
I think the guy deserves massive, massive credit and is a massive asset to our club.
As was Sutton as you say Liam, his time and many others is up. I suspect MON knew this as well.
-
While I agree with all the posts which list the great and wonderful things that that Celtic Legend ,Chris Sutton has done for our club, I have no regrets about him leaving.
Chris Sutton is leaving Celtic for one reason and one reason only. And that reason is money. The club want to cut his money and he is in the huff about it. He is refusing to sign a year's extension to his contract at Celtic, an extension that would give him ONE MILLION POUNDS for that year.
If the club put my season ticket price up £50 next season I'll still be there watching a team minus Chris because he REFUSED to play for less money.
Celtic Legend, well as that OTHER LEGEND might say, MAYBES AYE, MAYBES NAW.
DOUGLAS
AGATHE, BALDE VARGA McNAMARA
PETROV, LENNON, SUTTON, THOMPSON
HARTSON BELLAMY.
That is the starting eleven at Fir Park on Black Sunday. Not one LEGENDin that team, is there?
Douglas, McNamara and Bellamy have gone. Varga and Agathe have disappeared, Balde tried very hard to go but nobody wanted him,big Chris is about to depart in the huff and he probably will just leave before Alan Thompson.
Since last May I have constantly read on this site about how much we want rid of John Hartson.
That leaves Petrov and Lennon. We'll find out soon enough what Stan does over the money on offer in his new contract.
The only player from that team who, in my opinion could come close to being called a LEGEND would be Lennon, because he took the pay cut and stayed. He wanted to be here.
Personally, I will only be happy when all the LEGENDS of BLACK SUNDAY have left the club.
So Chris, thank you but GO, AND GO QUICKLY.
-
thismancraig -
I was one of the biggest fans of the big guy and this is why is pains me to see him left to walk away for nowt.
I think it does one of three things.
It makes the player look worthless to a club who would let him walk away.
It also makes him look completely unwanted that we would let him walk away without a chance to thank him for his great service.
And it gives the hacks of the mint days of collum space to crucify the manager, the board and the player
/Bishop B
-
Well I, for one, dont want rid of John Hartson.
-
It's confirmed on the official Celtic site. He has gone.
All the best big Chris and thanks for your contribution over the last 5 years, dare I say that you were like our very own Roy Keane. You will remain one of our own.
So that's £28k saved per week for the remainder of his contract.
But would anyone take Henrik back for the remainder of this season and possibly next?
-
Well the business acumen of the deal speaks for itself. Clearly unfit sutton who was struggling to make the team who maybe would play a handful of games between now and the end of the season and would take closer to the tune of £1 million for his troubles.
-
If what is being reported is factual ie Sutton has gone on a free it is nothing short of scandalous. To lose a quality player like Sutton in the first place is a blow to lose him for sod all takes the biscuit. Just who is running our club the service is poor the attitude of the board towards the supporters is disgraceful and now we let players with face value leave for nothing, SCANDALOUS.
-
Martin42 said:
"That leaves Petrov and Lennon. We'll find out soon enough what Stan does over the money on offer in his new contract."
I expect Stan to conclude his contract negotiations during his enforced absence from the team over the next few weeks.
But I think it is unfair to attempt to slate everyone who played on Black Sunday. If you put Ronaldinho on the park with ten other guys who were either compete duds or just not up to/for it, his team would still lose. An 11 man team can't win a game with only one player producing the goods, regardless.
Stan must stay!
-
Amazing!
Have we gone out of business or something? We've lost one player who is less than a bit part player now.
Peter Lawwell is a credit to our club - I'll say it again.
Immediate reaction to change in manager, player deals tied up with little fuss on terms that suited us, permanent signing of Boruc, image rights for Nakamura, silent dignified conduct leading to Keane signing, seamless departure of Sutton despite suggested 'unrest', the share issue!
-
Al bundy ?
Scandalous? What do you want? The player to remain on the wage-bill till he's collecting his pension? Just maybe chris wanted to leave? And there were clauses in the contract which allowed him to do so? Would you have preferred him to stay and collect closer to the tune of £1 million including bonuses only to make a handful of cameo appearences from the bench? In effect we are not losing him for sod all we are saving a tidy sum. Just face it chris chased the honey-pot somewhere else. Its only a job playing for celtic to these type of players nothing more. To leave all the blame at Celtic's door is frankly SCANDALOUS.
-
theres no wailing and gnashing, Paul.
is there something else we should know?
or is it cos u know we will not be spending this window?
after letting big players (ex?) go.
the league is over already, why waste the cash eh
-
Len, I know where you are coming from, but with Sutton able to leave in June, and being able to chose his destination, I suspect there was no money on offer from Birmingham.
The choice was to lose him now and save his wages, or pay him until June and lose him then.
While I accept that this is a value judgement, and some will disagree, looking at this fitness record over the last 18 months I was in favour of moving him on. We get to use around £500k that would have been paid to him on fresh talent.
If we wanted to get money for him we would have needed to sell him around the time Larsson left, which in retrospect might have been the best idea, but I suspect those who are complaining that this is bad business would not have wanted to sell him back then either.
An interesting comparison can be made with Petrov. Should we sell him now, or hold him until we cannot get a transfer fee for him?
Martin42, hmm.
-
Big Liam, not if he's replaced by 3 Mo Camaras.
-
3 Mo camara's or 3 bobo baldes?
Mo's ok in my book. I'll stick my neck out here and state we would not have conceded as many goals recently if Mo was at left-back.
-
Happy New Year one and all,...no matter the quality of a player in the past, it's what he can do now and in the future that counts, and now and in the future big Chris is a man who may manage a handful of games and might or might not try very hard (no matter how many times I look at it he still deliberately got himself sent off against the Hun)if we keep him until the summer and he knows he is leaving can you see him breaking into sweat in any games. More importantly, if WGS is to build a team with pace and skill, fast passing and movement, then Chris is not your man, too many big, slow players kills the game, and no offence but Lenny,BBJ and Chris on the pitch at the same time leads to dull, dull,`dull football, so he left on a free, the money we will save over the remainder of his contract goes back into WGS budget, manouvering room for a Petrov pay rise perhaps? I'm happy with the deal, I can barely remember a decent performance from him, his first 3 seasons-tremendous, this and the last-forgetable. Would he keep a fit Zurawski/Beattie/Maloney/Hartson out of the team-I do not think so.
Best of luck big man. Thanks for the memories.
-
Obviously our manager doesn't think so when he's prepared to watch young Wallace being skinned for 90 minutes.
-
Paul - spot on. To pay Chris £500k for the next 5 months and still see him walk away for free is nonsensical. Too many people on here are reacting like red top journalists and criticising the board for doing their job. Does anyone really think CS for the last two seasons has been worth over £30k a week? Or that he would deliver that kind of value next season?
He WAS a very good player for Celtic but time moves on. You cannot live in the past and reward the man just because of what he did in the HL years. He is not going to be a first choice striker under WGS and there is no room for him in the present or future midfield. He made it clear a few months ago he had no interest in playing centre half on a permanent basis so why the gnashing of teeth? Next thing we know someone will want to give him a testimonial . . .
-
The question is now who will replace sutton? Now or in the summer?
Robbie Keane anyone? (CQN tin-hat firmly on)
-
Keane is now 1st choice for Spurs.
Zurawski, Hartson, Beattie and Maloney.
I guess only 1 has a future beyond the summer????
-
I would suggest this has nothing to do with asset management more to do with the downsizing of our great club.
Let`s all face up to the harsh reality, we`ve lost a top notch player (WGS WORDS) for ziltch, because of our desire to downsize.
Suttons injury record stands favourably with Beattie (who`ll probably have a lifetime of problems) and Majic? remember it was a freak accident which ruled him out for the early part of the season.
Only in October did WGS describe Suttons performance as "one of the best centre forwards displays he has ever seen!!!)
So does everybody now think he has suddenly become a hasbeen.
If i had the choice between BBJ, majic? Beattie, Maloney, or SUTTON i know who would be first on my teamsheet.
-
Paul 67
A build on your point about CL qualification :
We really only need to concern ourselves about Arsenal / Real Madrid / Villareal or .....Rangers winning it then !
The reality is that if Arsenal and Real Madrid's form does recover domestically and they were to be eligable via that route then it could have a negative impact on our Pot 2 potential.
The most likely ideal scenario would be Real and Villareal to go through, Spurs to beat Arsenal to 4th CL slot in England and Monaco (potential to exceed our co efficient) to miss out on 3rd French place or get put out of UEFA next round.
This would give SPL winners guaranteed entry and if the SPL winners is Celtic guaranteed Pot 2.
Mind you with Villareal looking like they might take a plundering in the transfer window maybe the good fortune enjoyed by the 4th placed SPL side might just continue for another round.....
-
Bigchipsuk,
If Stan signs his new contract, I am sure it will be for less money than he would have got had MONstill been manager.
If and when he signs then he will prove to me that he wants to stay and i will give him the benifit of the doubt.
The whole team was not right in the final five games of last season. Fir Park was only the straw that broke the camel's back.
Lennon stayed for less money because he wanted to be here. if Stan stays for less than he could have got elsewhere then good on him and I'll applaud bhim all the more.
Martin42
-
Understand where you are coming from my friend, but you have to realise that the teams the were all quoted as being interested in Sutton, Birmingham/Everton/Portsmouth are all looking for a fix to their CURRENT problems.
They aren't in the market for Sutton as a long term fix. They are the kinds of clubs who can be bargained with.
And the most important factor I think is that we let Sutton go for free on the 5th of January a full 26 days before the transfer window closes.
Why would we do this so early?
Why not give yourself until the 20th of the month before making such a big decision.
/Bishop B

We need 4 strikers, Beats and magic have thier fare share of injuries and BBJ cant go on forever. Maloney seems to prefer the left midfield. I'd promote a reservist like o'carroll or somebody or take riordan till the summer then re-evaluate our options.
Keane maybe first-choice for spurs now but they wanted shot of him a while ago. Maybe because Mido is off to african nations an defoe is short of form they are talking him up. His contract is up in 6 months so why not sound him out?

Because we need the money freed up now to make our own signings len

I'd be fairly happy with the Hartson, Zurawski and Beattie as dedicated 'front men' with Maloney and McGeady as options between now and the summer.
Then I'd look to get someone in (or even sign someone like Riordan or Keane on a pre-contract aggreement)

anyone heard how that fella eremenkos tril went must be over by now?

Chris Sutton played more games last season (37) than he did in seasons 00/01(34) and season 01/02 (29) he played most out of position ie midfield but still managed 16 goals including the one on black sunday.
You do read some garbage sometimes.
We`ll be allright though we can stick ADAM VIRGO upfront!!!!

Len, we don’t know all the facts here. Certainly the Everton interest was a red herring. There is also the fact that Chris’ agent will have been able to speak to all interested parties, and might have chosen Birmingham and declined any others.
The cost benefit analysis should certainly provide Celtic with the benefit of the doubt.
As I said yesterday, if we want to get the best team on the field, we need to make some hard decisions.
Davie Hay, I think you will find some wailing and gnashing….
If I had my choice I would only spend money now on players who had a good chance of being first team players next season.
Again, a value call, but I would take my chances with the current squad (possibly even get shot of a couple more), without the need to shore up with a short term signing, (which Telfer and Camara both were).
Forget Robbie Keane, he does not fit the profile. Anyone coming from the EPL is going to offer poor value, unless he is prepared to take a drop in wages, as Roy has done.
There is much better value to be had in every other league in the world – look at what we got from Italy.

Paul,
I,like most Celtic supporters, ave mxed feelings about Chris Sutton leaving. He was a great player for us for a couple of seasons. He hasn't been a real force for a bit, partly due to his seming to be injury prone.
I do think it is good business that we have had his wages taken off the pay roll. What I don't properly understand is why we couldn't get some sort of transfer fee, since he didn't become a free agent until June and various teams seemed to be interested in him. Couldn't we have sold him to the highest bidder? I know he could refuse but surely some of these clubs could buy him and still afford to pay him what he was looking for in wages?
Thanks, Chris, and here's hoping we get a fit Beattie and Zurawaski soonest.

A couple of posters mention Riordan as a poss signing.
I personally wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.
No doubt he is a good player but too much trouble off the pitch.
I also think he is a bit like McFadden, not an out and out goalscorer who drifts out of games.
