CELTIC SIGN WILSON
-
Welcome to Paradise Mark!
-
Welcome Mr Wilson.
I'd settle for getting a similar return as we did when we signed Jackie McNamara.
Similar age and similar type of player.
My new defence would look like this.
Boruc
Wilson Keane Balde McManus
That defence would be able to DEFEND. I dont think its too important to have attacking ful backs with the midfield we already have.
Hail Hail
-
Good news i suppose however i cant really say that ive seen too much of the lad can anyone give me and idea of his strong points
I still wont be happy unless we sign a left back during the tranfer window as well.
-
Paul, I dont think there will be too much pressure on Mark wilson. When Naka collects the ball just inside and looks for the overlap he will now have the option (in fact, I thought Naka was reluctant to pass to Telfer on Saturday).
If he runs to the bye line and puts in a few crosses, he will win most people over. Oh and of course first of all defend and win some tackles.
Welcome Mark.
-
No, no, we have to hound him at every opportunity, boo him, groan when a pass goes astray, and generally ruin his confidence - it's the Celtic way!
-
baz 67 can't really argue with that defence but if we are lucky it coule even look like this come next season
Boruc
Wilson Kennedy Caldwell Mcmanus
This allows a midfield of
Nakamura K Thomson R Keane A McGeady
And a forward line of
Hartson Maloney
An ok start to the season next year.
Hopefully we will have seen the last of Camara and Telfer and more good players coming in.
Welcome to paradise
-
Strange that Mark should sign while Celtic are providing Dundee United with left back Charlie Mulgrew, who had a good match yesterday according to the radio commentary.
Let`s hope we will soon have a reliable back line!
-
Paul - Any word on the unveil?
Also any word whether the Hungarian lad is coming to PH for a medical etc?
Welcome to the Celtic family Mark!
/Bishop B
-
Mcmanus is not a left back!!!!
He could maybe fill in there for a couple of matches but no way would i want him there full time.
We need to sign a quality left back
-
Arranmore, unfortunately you are right but at least some of these people like to beat the traffic and leave early.
-
Wilson is a sensible signing. 21, Pacy, aggressive in the tackle, knows the right back position & has good SPL experience. Reminds me a lot of McNamara.
Adding him to Keane & we're slowly getting there in terms of strength.
If we can address 3 key postions we'll be laughing:
Centre Half, Left Back, Left Midfield
-
Young Wilson should be a good signing but when will he replace Telfer? I doubt it will be this weekend as McManus is suspended. Given WGS tends to only make one defensive change from week to week I see him going with this on sunday
Telfer Keane Virgo Wallace
Wilson on the bench
God help us all
Is McManus out for 2 games?
-
numero uno,
he is a very, very good crosser of the ball
-
Hungarians are getting quite excited about the possibility of Halmai (pronounced, Holmoy-e) Peter hooking up with Roy Keane.
Here's the link but I don't suppose it's much use since Hungarian is a tough language to get to grips with:
http://www.nemzetisport.hu/cikk.php?cikk=104145
Basically, they are saying that he will sign a two and a half year deal.
His team Debrecen, from the East of the country, are the current Hungarian champions.
-
I think it will help Mark Wilson to make his debut in an away game. Unfortunately the home crowd pressure is way OTT at times. Afraid I can't agree with all the posters that want Roy Keane in the centre of defence. Given the choice I'd rather a centre half that is limited on the ball playing front but a fantastic defender, rather than the other way around which I fear is what applies to Roy.
-
think its just the one game....itl be interesting to see what happens when big Bobo returns from Africa....
-
Don't be surprised to see Ross Wallace make way for Wilson at Fir Park, with Telfer moving to left back.
If we ever manage to acquire a real left full back don't be surprised to see Artur Boruc make way for the new guy - with Telfer going in goal.
-
I am glad the team is gaining more of a 'home-grown' identity, two of our best players this season have been big Mick, and wee Shauno.
Beattie's early season efforts were great too, and we've had a good contribution from Aiden.
These are all players who have been brought through and not 'poached'.
Wilson and Caldwell will add even more to the Scottish identity, and we could have as many as 6 or 7 regular home-grown starters next season.
what are the odds on having a team with more Scots than Foreigners as first choice next season?
The downside of this is that alot of the Scoland team will be Celtic players, and that means more chance of picking up injuries, more games etc...although I'd not complain at any Celtic player being recogised internationally as it means they are doing a good job for the hoops.
CELTICFC NUMERO UNO Wilson is a player who has impressed me every time I've seen him, if memory serves me well he is a VERY good corner taker. consistant!
gweedorebhoy, no place for the Magic man?!
how about a 3-5-2 of
Wilson, Caldwell, Mick
Naka, Stan, Keano, Lenno, Shauno
Magic, Beattie
-
From the previous thread on the fattest players ever to play for Celtic. I can't believe nobody nominated Pat McLuskey or Frank Munro.
-
Sir Paul,
No need to remind You, pal.
But for the benefit of the Newbies to this illustrious island of all thing Celtica, the following contribution appeared on this very blog,on:
Friday, AUGUST 5th.,2005.
If one should type in the words:"Kelso Doctor" sans quotes, one will then be whisked to this entry.
It is a further interesting exercise, if one reads some of the other contributions at that time, as the Posters attempt to understand and eventually....

Rough translation of Hungarian article:
Debrecen-Glasgow. Celtic and the Hungarian champions have agreed a two and a half year deal for the national team midfielder.
Halmai, of the defending Hungarian champions, Debrecen, arrived on Monday for a medical. Halmai, selected eight times for the national team will remain in Scotland until Fridayand if everything is fine will sign a two and a half year contract.
Halmai Peter may become the latest Hungarian player to play in the British Isles. The left-sided midfielder will be the guest of the 39 times Scottish Champions Celtic from Monday to Friday with a view to signing a two and a half year contract.
The 26 year old played before for Haladas (H)and Grazer AK (Austria) and a fee has been agreed between Debrecen and Celtic - the player's agent, Mihaly Laczko told Nemzeti Sport Online.
Laczko stressed that this is not a trial. There will be a doctor's examination and physical test and if Peter is satisfied he will be travelling home to Hungary with a contract.
More to come.

gerry, where are your manners?

Welcome home young Mark.
Any chance of a left back joining our latest recruit before the end of the month?

Defence comments possibly over-egging the pudding (pleae no AV jokes!) regarding the people you mention but I believe that a lack of investment in this area has cost the club £10mill this year.
The team has been crying out for an experienced CB to take the Pat Stanton role and provide leadership towards a fully functioning CL back 4.
From memory Dellas for one was available and although he might have had a high opinion of himself, 12 months of his experience would have made a big difference. If he was not suitable for whatever reason I'm sure there were other candidates available.
By candidates I don't mean GC who has all the hallmarks of a panic buy to get us to the end of the season. Surely not one for the CL medium term unless he can coach BB through 90 minutes? Again strange.
However returning to your original comments I think the following has to be taken into account:
MC - MON spot who I think was being lined up to be DA Mk2.
PT - Emergency signing nothing more.
DW - Punt who I think could still come good.
AV - Strange one, needs games but has some promise. However was he not signed with RB in mind?
Again AV, then MW and possibly GC? I would suggest that these players are being bought in the wrong order?
Consequently none of these players can be considered to be top class experienced players ready for the CL, and the continuing lack of this type of player is hurting the club big time.
BB - Needs a shouter/organiser/sweeper next to him.
SM - Can't use BB as a mentor if he is to advance beyond being Malky MacKay Jnr.
RW - Needs experience and cover if he is to make it as LB.
MW - Needs to be bedded into a Back 4 with strong foundations not any 3 blokes we can spare from the front 6.
RK - Wasting his time at CB. NL struggling then a rest should be organised.
Also what is the weekly cost of keeping SV / AT / DA on the wage bill as they collect dust in the stand?
£50K pw?
What is the weekly cost of a CL class CB?
Consequently I hope it is on WGS / PL's "To Do!" list.
-
Pleased Wilson has signed. If we get this Hungarian guy plus a left back (please not Telfer) then January will have been a moderate success.
Wonder when we will recruit an attacking goal keeper? Wonder if we could get Rene Higuita on a bosman?

Sorry about the link......here you go super......
Wilson Interview
-
Kojo, on the money as usual.
I keep hearing good things about Mark Wilson. It is also good to know that he is a Celtic fan, small matter I know, but not so long ago there were none in the Celtic team.
As I said to you before; Gordon needs a signing success in defence. I hope Mark gets the opportunity to settle before Arranmore’s prediction comes true.
We should remember:
A defence is as good as it's weakest link.
Mark might have a job on his hands.
-
So that will be Telfer playing centre forward on Sunday... or midfield....or in goal.
You will see that I'm having difficulty coming to terms with the notion of his mentor dropping.
I believe PT will play on Sunday at Fir Park despite the awful performance v Kilmarnock.
BTW I agree with the view that Roy is not the answer in defence. On Saturday he started like he was Pat Stanton circa 1976/77. By the end of the game he had transmogrified Dr who style into a normal celtic keystone kops defender with a built in Bobo moment for the equaliser.
GS will need to be bold when it comes to the use of Keano and that may involve relieving our captain of his on field responsibilities.
Final point. Can anyone explain to me why, at the 4th goal, Hartson picked up the ball with both hands instead of battering it into the net and remove any doubt or excuses. Beggars belief!!
-
Best wishes for your test on Wednesday Tom64.
Wilson is young enough anyway, I must have seen him at last year's scottish cup final, but you never notice the other team much do you?
Funny how Hibs are losing a bit of momentum now that their manager is
up in the stands. What was it he did to deserve a six match ban? Kick someone? Threaten a tea lady?Put a boot into the opposition team´s dressing room? No he received a 4 match ban for speaking his mind to an official. He was later told there had been a misprint in the letter informing him of the ban ....and received a further two match ban. You couldn´t make it up.
Mind you I am only 95% sympathetic, if they had tried a leg against Rangers in the second half on the last game of the season then it would be 100%
Welcome back p8ddy!
-
Tom64 - I seem to have missed what it is you are getting investigated Wednesday - good luck with it though - good health to all CQNers.
Hale Hail!

Continuation of the Hungarian article.
Gordon Strachan has spoken to Alex Ferguson about how Peter played when Man U met Debrecen in the Champions League. We also sent materials and a video about the player so they could get to know him.
Halmosi is preparing to sign a two and half year deal with the 39 times Scottish Champions, 33 times Scottish Cup Winners and Winners of the 1967 European Cup.
The midfielder has one year left on his contract with Debrecen and Celtic will pay the Hungarian Champions a transfer fee. Halmosi will not be payed small money by the Glasgwegians, on the basis of the transfer fee, he will become the most expensive Hungarian footballer playing abroad.
Mihaly Laczko and Gyorgy Frank are already in the UK with Halmai. They are guarded but fully expect the transfer to happen. Halmai said, I feel good about having one week of intensive training.
The Hungarian player will possibly join up with Roy Keane who ended his association with Man U to join Celtic.
-
couldn't agree more with earlier bloggers about Paul Telfer he will probably be moved to left back rather than be dropped. When WGS praises players publicly he always mentions Telfer. He Is Gordon Strachan's Alan Thompson, when Thompson was off the boil last season he was never dropped he was moved into the middle of the park rather than not picked. Also on an earlier Blogger about Stephen McManus i would rather play McManus at left back rather than Centre-Half he is a liabilty i don't Subscribe to the theory that he is a promising centre-half, He pop's up with important goals but he isn't doing his defensive job properly,he has made more mistakes than Varga who i would have back in the team in the short term, and move McManus to left back short term after all martin o'Neill was allowing him to leave that tells me something about him doing a job for Celtic in the centre of defence
-
Len Brennan.
I know I shouldn't believe the tabloids, but as there is a picture this time, I might well have to. Peter Halmosi is in the Evening Times online in Celtic training gear and wearing number 14. It looks like there might be something in this tale.
I've no doubt that the guy is a player, but given Gordon's preferance for using right sided players on the left to allow them to better cut insided, freeing up the full backs to overlap - and vice versa, I wonder what he's playing at here?
With Naka occupying the right flank, that means Halmosi (if he signs) will be on his preferred left and less likely to cut inside. This does however provide a bit of cover for a nervy left back. Could it be that apart from signing a reportedly great prospect, Strachan is preparing for the worst case scenario i.e. that we can't sign a left back in this transfer window, and will have a flying left winger limiting the attacks on that side? Is this a flight of fancy, or is Strachan displaying the wilyness of a fox?
If we get our left back position sorted, could it be that Maloney is redeployed in the centre of the park? That would of course require another midfielder losing his place or leaving... Stan? I don't even want to think it, but would this make logical sense?
By the way, Welcome young Mark. Pleased to have you on board.
NatureBhoy.
-
Kojo.....Camon,it's Monday, make it a wee bit easier, please.
-
Thanks for the link Gerry
Good interview, not taking anything for granted, being diplomatic but most of all, obviously very pleased to be at Celtic Park.
Got a sense of humour too....'Paul Telfer is a right good player'
Should fit in well.
-
From the article I posted, it looks like Celtic have agreed a fee for Halmai subject to being satisfied with him in training this week. In our book, this is a trial but the player and his agent seem to be at pains to reject this and they claim its just about checking the players overall fitness. To be fair, Hungary are currently in the middle of a Winter break and it would make sense for the player to train prior to a medical.
Needless to say, I can't vouch for the accuracy of the article or the quotations (and definitely not for my translation!!!). Nonetheless, it looks like Celtic are very interested. If Halmai is anywhere near as good as Zoltan Gere who plays for West Brom (unfortunately I haven't seen enough of Halmai to make that judgement), he would be a very good signing. West Brom got an absolute bargain when they bought Gere as he more than anyone kept them in the Premiership last year.
-
Kojo et al
You have the accuracy of a stopped clock, you had to get one right given the number of tips you post.
MW has been a candidate for a transfer for at least 18 months, best prospect from Tannadice in the last 12 years (FiL is a DU fan). The big issue here is why did it take so long? We could have been doing with him in July at a lower cost. We missed out and he re-negotiated his contract in the summer.
It is not as if we weren't looking at the RB jersey at the time just that we seemed to go for the injured and the mature.
Well better late than never.
Finally the new prospect better be good, the translation of the article suggests that something has to give.
Highest paid, big money and Celtic all in the one sentence - Surely not.
-
Sir Paul,
Fargo did mention it at the time to us,but it was never spoken of in public.....
The Li'l Admiral and Monsieur Lavalle are both men of sterling character......
In fact ....The BOSS'S very WORDS......
"Thon Pierre is a MENSCH!"
Celtic COULD HAVE pressed the CELTIC LOYALTY BUTTON that existed in MARK, if they had been Mean enough! But they generously did NOT.
So Mark did not leave for NOTHING ,when his contract came up for re-newal, at DUNDEE UNITED,last year!!
Instead Mark signed a 3 year Deal with the DUNDONIANS.
With the 500,000 OFFER STIPULATION..... Courtesy of The input of the vulpine Pierre!
Celtic told Mark........
"We'll be BAAAAAAAAAAACK, in JAN.2006!
Now it can be revealed.
Celtic are PUREEEEEEEEEEEE BUTTTAHHH!
Class dealings.... cannot HOIT!
Celtic will benefit in the Long Run!
Hail! Hail!

Frank, the whistle had gone and the ref was pointing to the centre circle before John caught the ball.
I remember thinking that when John picked the ball up there was no way back for the referee (not that there would have been anyway).
-
Hartson had plently of time to decide what to do.
He could quite easily have blasted the ball in, but he actually looked over his right shoulder and saw the far-side linesman scampering back towards the halfway line before he turned back round and caught the ball.
Sort of negates Combe's whingeing about the ball not being over the line (whilst admitting that one of his own team-mates said it was a goal).
-
Kojo @ 5.45pm
Who does PL work for? DU?
Can you please try and explain why waiting 6 months to sign MW was good business for the club? It is not as if first half of the season has not highlighted the need for a quality rather than stop-gap RB.
Consequently what have the club, WGS and PL gained from waiting six months to get the deal sorted?
Was his talent in question?
Were the number of newcomers limited?
Is the budget so tight?
Answers please, in plain English if you don't mind.
-
What a fanny Combe is, he must have taken over the mantle of the moaning face git of a manager, you really must read his comments...
It wasn't a free kick for the first goal...
It was a foul for the third goal...
The fourth goal was not over the line (even though one of his own players said it was)...
so it was 1-2 for Killie then, hope you enjoyed your win bonus.
-
Kojo
If Celtic could have gotten Wilson cheaper or on a free last summer then why not? Negotiators being soft or "generous" is not what I want to hear.
Nobody seems to know much about this Halmosi... left mid to me isn't anywhere near the top of the priorities list for new signings.
Currently we have Nakamura, Maloney, McGeady, Wallace & Thompson (although he may be heading out the door) who can all play in that position. Why another one?
If Maloney continues to improve on his defensive game I can see him being a centre mid... and an excellent one at that. He is composed, good on the ball, full of energy and can find a killer pass. He also doesn't waste possession much. We'd be lacking height in midfield though if he were deployed in the middle.
-
Although Telfer was signed as a stop gap, did we not pay a transfer fee for him and give him a 2 or 3 year deal.
Any takers
-
Hi Paul
Long time reader first time poster.
I'm personally delighted that Mark Wilson has signed. From what I have seen, he has qualities that we are perhaps missing in defence just now ie pace and composure on the ball.
The son of a workmate is on Dundee Utd's books and he has said that Wilson is head and shoulders above everyone else in the Utd squad, not just on the pitch but in training every day.
Here's hoping Sunday marks the end of the Telfer episode.
-
Welcome to the celtic fold Mark, hopefully you'll go on to become a Parkhead legend.
There are some comparisons to be made with Jackie, roughly the same age, coming from a provincial club,if we get the same commitment and ability,he'll do for me.
Tom awthebest for to-morrow,yours John-b.
-
a big welcome to mark wilson.
a tough debut awaits you at either fir park or against your old club the following week.
interesting to note will charlie mulgrew our future left back be up against our new right back next saturday?
my arab mate says we've signed the best talent at tannadice so that'll do for me.
on halmosi. if he's there to replace maloney on the left well i don't think that's an area we need to strengthen.
i think wee shaun has found his position and he is a 1st team player now.
if he could play on the right then maybe.

You considering dropping Naka?
-
My dear friend, Madmitch,
As in any business, it is necessary to maintain some scintilla of ethics.
It in Never good practice to take TOO MUCH advantage, when another Team is at your mercy...... financially speaking.
If you cast your mind back at few years......... Celtic used the exact same Tactic....which in MY BOOK is always the CORRECT ONE..... When Mon allowed Mr. PEARSON to go ahead and sign a new contract with Motherwell....... much the same thing as in Mr. WILSON'S Case......later, of course, they signed Mr.PEARSON... supplying a much needed fee, for the FINANCIALLY STRUGGLING MOTHERWELL CLUB.....
I am afraid, my friend...... you will never see the Wisdom in ANY of CELTIC'S DEALINGS.......
On reading your submissions to this sainted site.....they are ALWAYS HEAVILY PEPPERED by SARCASTIC REMARKS CONCERNING THE CELTIC NAVIGATORS.....
However, that is part and parcel of your personality, and you are very entitled to feel as you do........
Free Country and all that!
Hail! Hail!
Kojo.
..
-
Madmitch and Malone19,
Since Mark Wilson is under 23 (just 21, in fact) and has been with Dundee United since he was but a nipper, we would have been obliged to pay the Tannadice club a fee to recompense them for their nurturing of him. This amount would have been worked out at a tribunal.
It would not have been far off £500,000 methinks, given that the lad is an Under-21 international.
We don't know for certain how much has been paid in this instance. Nor how the payments are structured.
But Dundee United are happy. And Celtic are happy.
Mr Lawwell is not renowned for scattering cash for no good reason. I would surmise that this is a good bit of business for all concerned.
And if other Scottish clubs can trust us to play fair when it comes to taking young players off their hands, they will be much easier to deal with. Trust is an important factor in business deals.
How much do you think Dundee and Hibs trust Rangers after the Kizhinashvili and Ian Murray cases?
Celtic spend money to sign a talented young player, and STILL some people find something to moan about.
Aye, "it's the Celtic way" right enough.
(;-0)
-
Kojo ................so that's 1 in ........are we still bring in another 2?
Is one of then Peter Halmosi?
and
I take the lad from Hibs is for the summer according to WGS
-
Kojo
We are a business not a charity.
We have a charitable dimension with specific fundraising which aims to help out individuals and countries experiencing hard times or destructive acts of nature.
This surely does not cover Scottish football clubs who have spent more than they earned.
Money for SP, surely they didn't use it to bring over a nippy Aussie forward?
Where will it all end, does charity extend to the Govan basketcase? After all their need is probably the greatest of all the SPL clubs. If Dm goes belly up a lot of people outwith TFOD willl lose their jobs, will they deserve our support?
On second thoughts we have already started! The CL league debacle means that we have already donated £2mill of CL TV money to the Govan paupers.
At least we are consistent.
-
Thanks for clearing that up johnboy.
I was questioning it myself.
-
malone19,
no. if we are signing him there's a chance he could be replacing stan.
if stan stays he's there to bolster the squad for the run-in.
maybe there was a chance we'd miss out on halmosi in the summer.

My dear friend,Johnny,
Trust you to add a very welcome ingredient of Uncommon sense, to the WILSON Transfer matter.
I know that many contributers to this site, are still wary of Celtic's Business Acumen....and not without good reason, because of past serious indiscretions on the FINANCIAL FRONT.......
The GREAT BRAZILLIAN Mystery SIGNING......which has been calculated to have COST CELTIC......
TEN MILLION Pounds!
A figure, to NOT SET THE HEART RACING!
However......that is all in the PAST...
Time to recognize that the PRESENT Celtic FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT team, has changed in its CONTRACTUAL Dealings, very Radically, from its FORMER representitives.
Monsieur Pierre is a very SOLID Citizen.
He will not make any FINANCIAL BOOBOOS..... you can rely on that!
Hail! Hail!

hi paul fellow celts . paul am i the only one who feels a bit disappointed that du wei didnt pull it off for the top team.as i have posted on here before i have watched the lad on a good few occasions and thought we had a right good one here.he seemed to me to be a bit of class.i was at the clyde debacle and agree that he had a very poor game . but in mitigation i feel he was not alone .and field that he could and should have been helped along by players of far greater experience.i am sorry to my fellow posters for continuing with my defence of this lad but i think the time he has been here and with g s in attendance at the matches (i m h o )where he excelled i feel he could have played him a lot earlier in his spell here and introduced him gradually into the first team set up . hail hail
-
Thanks for the link to the interview..And the comments on his talent.....your question was mine too NUMERO UNO....
So all I can say is this...Articulate, thouightful, modest, appears a model professional...My first impression is 'another intelligent player'...
Good luck to you Mark Wilson....You are living the dream!
-
Johnboy
Fair point about trust and the proper way to go about your business.
But PL is a tough cookie according to our celebrity board insider. How will this behaviour affect his negociations with others? Will they play hardball and wait for the charity side of his personality tio come to the fore?
Why DU and not Hibs, GC on a Bosman from a team with £10mill+ in debt who are surviving due to a considerate bank manager and a Leith old boy made good.
Fine actions indeed but surely not at the cost of weakening the team?
July on here was full of talk about what FB's were available and would take the club forward. The question has to be asked why was the acquisition of this player delayed by 6 months. The amount of money border's on the trivial and if recompence was required their could have been traffic the other way as well as the required fee.
Six months later we pay a higher price, force the new player to give up part of his signing on fee and then loan one of our own prospects to the same team.
Strange, very strange!
-
JohnBhoy calls it right. Celtic have not been generous but probably smart. They have signed a player of their choosing at a time of their choosing for an agreed and negotiated fee. MW is under 23 therefore DU are due a negotiated, reasonable fee.

Financial Bobo = Yes
Kojo - Are you Ming Campbell in disguise?
Keep setting them up.

My dear friend, Gerry,
Yes, there are still 2 to come.
I have NO KNOWLEDGE of the HUNGARIAN PLAYER........He is an UNKNOWN piece in the Jigsaw!
However.........
I am still hoping that Caldwell CAN ARRIVE BEFORE THIS WINDOW CLOSES.
A question several weeks ago .............was posed by a member of the COTERIE.....
"Which is easier.......
To RAISE the BRIDGE.......or LOWER THE RIVER?"
That question was never answered to my satisfaction.
Hail! Hail!

Madmitch...Interesting comment about not a charity but a business. I have found that the most successful long term businessmen I know have something in common...
They only do business with people they like and respect....they consider the 'relationship' to be the essence of good business...And its longevity...
Charity is a highly subjective concept.
-
PJBhoynyc
As mentioned above fair point about relationships but -
Why:
MW and DU
but not
GC and Hibs?
Any good regarding the club's most recent behaviour will be lost if we play hardball with GC/Hibs?
-
At 7:06 PM, madmitch said…
I'm assuming Mark Wilson is a bigger priority for Gordon for the run in of the season. Wilson had that clause in his contract as well so it was a simple peice of business compared to GC which i'm sure would be a little more awkward.
I don't really see it as a big deal.
-
Paul/bhoys,
maybe i've missed the obvious over the last few days but HAS Gary Caldwell signed a pre-contract agreement or not? most articles seem to comment on it rather than confirming it, also didn't see anything on the official website.
-
jimtim ........... i'm with you regarding Du Wei ...........I've not seen the lad play live yet but seen him in the under 21s and he does look good.
I don't think he was the worst player on the park last week........ lets hope he stays and gets another go.
Kojo ....thanks for the reply .......i never heard of a player called Raise....:-)
I'll get my coat.....

Good evening gentle Celts, the CQN Monday quiz returns with a fanfare...........hardly, but here goes anyway.
Tonight's subject is trialists. See how many you know.
1. Israeli internationalist over at Parkhead in 1972.
2. Irish player who played against Birmingham in 1975.
3. Scots international winger who played reserve games in 1976 but injuries won the day.
4. German who was brought home after EC defeat in Innsbruck in 1977 and was never heard of again.
5. Portuegese player who came on as sub v Barca in 1996 friendly.
6. Spanish midfield prodigy on trial in 2003.
7. Portugal striker on trial same time as above.
8. Brazilian striker who wanted to replace the KIng in 2004.
Don't be shy now, fire away.
PS - Good luck to young master Wilson.

Agree wholeheartedly with your post @ 6.47.
Certainly worth perservering with.
Paul
Has the decision been made on Scooby, or will it be made for them if his club insist on payment now?
-
Young Mr Combe was putting up with team-mates forecasting him losing 6 or 7 goals all last week. Take that to your local branch of Crufts. Do doubts over words attributed to players only apply to Celtic?
-

Welcome back. Cant remember the name of number 5 (even though I was at the game!) and the rest are a bit before my time so I'll go for
6 De La Pena
7 Dani
8 Amoruso (who has just signed for AC Milan to replace Vieri)
-
Martinobhoy - Spot on with 6, 7, and 8.
Numbers 1-4 are hard but some bright spark normally comes up with the answers !

While both sides being happy is an important part of negotiating gifting a team half a million pounds is verginf on charitable. Fair enough if Celtic are to be life long trading partners with Dundee Utd. but they will not be. Hibs may not trust Rangers but that won't stop Rangers from buying or taking more players on a bosman in years to come. It's down to the player what happens not the club.
The rules of the game mean that players move for nothing when out of contract, a tribunal may have taken place but it would not be anywhere near £500,000. Did we see such a tribunal for Liam Miller? If so we could have recieved £3m+ for an Ireland internationalist with great promise who one of the biggest clubs in the World were after.
I'm happy Wilson has been signed but to come out and say we were always going to buy him but decided to wait so we could fork out £500,000 is madness. I'm with Madmitch on this one.

I would also be dissapointed if nothing came of the Du Wei deal. The deadline has passed yet we have heard nothing either way - very strange.

St Anthony No2 Pierce O'leary?

At last their something we can agree on
Keep the Scooby One!
BB / AV / SM = Bruisers
We need a bit of football ability to mix in with their brawn.
SV = Hardly one for next season
GC = Hibee midget
RK = Waste
Consequently we need Mr DW.
Hopefully the Chinese mob will be feeling "charitable".
-
I suspect theres a few on here being economical with the truth regarding the 'I've always rated Mark Wilson' comments. truth is ' if your like me, he's never really stood out either good or bad against us although my brother maintains that Ross Wallace gave him a roasting ( though not in the biblical sense).
I would have preferred to see Gary Irvine given a shout at RB before we part with valuable cash which could have been spent on a badly needed centre back. Motherwell next weekend has me a bit on the nervy side with McManus being suspended. Could be time for a stop gap signing similar to Ramon Vega in MON's treble season.
Anybody have any updates on whether the Scoobster is staying or going back to China, Wasnt it yesterday we had to decide?

5. Jorge Amaral
I remember some fans started a song about him, the first line was
"There's only one Amaral, he's Jorge Cadete's pal......"
I also recall being completely frozen at that game where Amaral appeared. He didn't show much but Robert Prosincecki ran the show and De La Pena (why the hell did MON not sign him) was outstanding also.
-
Jon G - Wrong on both - sorry !
-
Opus - Right on with Amaral. Apparently TB said he was no better than what we had......Grant, O'Neil and Weighorst !
As for 1 -4 some of you older Celts must remember......?

5. Jorge Amaral
I remember some fans had started a song about him that started off,
"There's only one Amaral, he's Jorge Cadete's pal....."
I also recall being completely frozen at that game where Amaral didn't show much. Robert Prosinecki ran the show and De La Pena (why the hell did MON not give sign him when he had the chance) was outstanding too.
If memory serves, and quite often it doesn't, I think we lost 1-0.

Apologies for posting my last comment twice guys. I'm new to this so please forgive my teething troubles.
-
A huge welcome to Mark Wilson, I think JohnBhoy hit the nail on the head...if the player did not have this clause in his current contract, we would have been at the mercy of a tribunal who could easily have doubled his value. £ 0.5m is a snip for a player of this quality at 21. I hope Pierre has a few more up his sleeve.
While it is always dangerous to assume, the Kojo riddle looks obviously like Wayne Bridge. I trust Chelsea will continue to pay a large part of his wages. A player well known to the Manager and while a loan deal is not ideal it is a good stop gap move until we can source a longer term investment.
I not the name Dellas still being bandied about. Not withstanding his enormous wage demands. Surely the fact that the player like Balde is still available is testament to his "quality" or lack....being slower than Lennon.
As Sir Alex has found out even £ 5.4m doesn't buy a quality left back, thats what you get for relying on your brother (nepotism in action)
But a top euro scout with proper contacts just might unearth one.
I'd look in Italy, no reserve football, real defenders...must have 1 somewhere
-
I'm off, will be back at 10 to post the answers.
-
It's interesting to look at Strachan's reactions to Wilson compared to Caldwell. You get the feeling from his words and actions that he views Caldwell as someone who can come in and do a job short term as we are desperate. While with Wilson he talks more as if he is a real player.
-
My dear friend, JohnG,
No need for wires anymore, I am right in the same Apartment as The Boss.
I asked Fargo about the Hunky...can I say that...... Well, anyway I just did!
He has never heard of that Player. Like us and WILL ROGERS, he says that he only knows, what he reads in the Papers!
The place the Hungarian would fill in the Celtic Line-Up, may have more to do with Stan's Position, than The WELSHMAN'S.
I do not know!
Hail! Hail!
Kojo.
-
Paul,
My best mate thinks Mark Wilson is a good signing and that is good enough for me. We desperately need a right back. We desperately need a left back too, of course, and I am a bit worried about the signing of the Hungarian left winger. To me, that's where Maloney has shone this season. Any centre backs mentioned? I do hope Du Wei is retained; he has shown skill, which is not something I 'd assocaite with too many of our defenders.
By the way, all the best, Tom, on Wednesday. I have to go a week on Thursday for the results of my colonoscopy.
-
Cant get too excited about M Wilson. But surely, please god, has to be better than Telfer! If not we`re in the Sh**.
He had very poor games in the UEFA CUP this year, which apart from playing us, is the only time i`ve seen him.
One thing that did disturb me greatly when i saw him on the news with WGS, was that he was only an inch or so taller!!!
We seem to have gone from land of the giants to Gullivers Travels in a year!!
-
Welcome to young Mark Wilson.
Tom64 thoughts and prayers for you on Wed.
-
st anthony...just logged on and noticed your quiz. I reckon the Israeli was Mordechai Spiegler? the Irishman was definitely Hilary Carlyle (who got subbed at HT in that Birmingham game)and the German was Dieter Knepper who as you say Big Jock brought back from Austria after that debacle in Salzburg.I actually travelled with the team on that journey and the journalists were all amazed that Jock had signed him. The concensus was that the Big Man's powers were on the wane. I believe that Knepper was also an international basketball player. Still thinking about the Scots winger.
-
It'll be a leap of faith for GS to sign Du Wei.
However, he can rest assured that we'll be waiting in the wings to stick the boot in if the gamble fails and, of course, there'll be a conspicuous crescendo of silence if it succeeds.
Hope he takes the leap, I'll go and polish the steel toecaps of my boots meantime. ;o)
Hope you enjoy the ride on the helter-skelter Mr Wilson.

Paul-
I think Timmy referred -in the previous thread-to the letter in todays Herald from michael kelly.
The damn cheek of the man.
He makes reference to Celtic's glorious heritage under his ancestors and relatives.
The gist of his [clouded]memories was that Celtic would never have suffered our recent cup defeats-he mentions I.C.Thistle' twice plus Artmedia and Clyde -under their regime.
Short memory or what ?
This man's family precided over the most disasterous and swift decline of one of Europe's greatest clubs.
They filled their pockets with the punters gatemoney and left our club on its knees and minutes from receivership.
He goes on to call Dermott Desmond a "golfing profiteer".
If the subject of his epistle hadn,t been Celtic -you would have laughed at his stupidity.
Him and his family-by an accident of birth-had total control of our club and abused and bled that club dry by their greed.
I am not a violent or aggressive person by nature but if one was to see m.kelly walking down the street- it could well result in a pavement mounting moment.

He [Peter Lawwell] will not make any FINANCIAL BOOBOOS..... you can rely on that!
Was it not the bold Peter who came up with Bobo's less than spectacular (for Celtic) contract? And who negotiated the Paul Telfer deal, where we spent £300,000 on a 34 year old (on a two year deal)? Something doesn't add up, and I think it's Peter! :-)
I'm not saying he's been a disaster, but to my mind the "asset management" has been conspicuous by it's abscence.
On a positve note : Whilst not knowing a lot about Mark Wilson, the last player I was similarly ignorant of was Paul Lambert. And looked how he turned out! One of the best players I've seen gracing the hoops. If young Mark turns out half as good we'll have won a watch. I think that we will have to be patient though - As Paul points out, he'll have the weight of expectation on his head which tends to have a less than helpful effect on players form.
Good luck fella!

I still no insight into the meeting with our favorite German Mr. Jaeger last week. Have the grounds for merriment been covered here by the two of the three already disclosed? Nothing on The Magyar then? Interesting it seems to have popped up in the media there too. That is some substantiation - at least he is real, and not a localized fabrication.
What about the other Romany gypsy who is neither Romulus or Remus but is rared by the same mother. When in Rome.
Is the 3rd in play here?
-
st.anthony...I believe the winger you have in mind could either be Tony Green (Blackpool) or Jimmy Smith (Aberdeen/Newcastle)although I don't recall either of them being out and out wingers. Both of them were big Celtic fans.
-
Kojo;
Thanks for the reply.
Are we so desperate for money that we would replace Stan with a left winger.
From the small footage i have seen of the player,he is a left sided attacker.
Don't we already have enough in that department?
-
Noel, your (rant on the Kelly dynaty)sorry, point of view does not miss the mark.
Had Fergus not intervened at the appropriate time we would have been on here talking about fresh air and not Celtic because they would be history.
Glasgows miles better....Aye without that lot in charge of celtic!

My dear friend, Martinobhoy,
Some questions and statements are not worth my time.

My dear friend, San_Fran_Tic,
You are progressing mightily.
The Peripatetic Fellow is right off the Radar, as far as I hear.
And even if the Hunky is signed......
There is room in the Pantry for at least one other, tid-bit.
Celtic do have a sweet tooth.
Non Sequitur time.....
Have you now rejoined the fun and merriment as featured by Chan67?
I hope that you have...I had had(?) bad Buffering at the KILLIE GAME.... and left the scene of irritation, in low dudgeon!
But I am told that everything is now COPACETIC...and I guess that the Teething Pains will have to be borne, for a few more weeks.
It will be worth the effort in the end.
Hail! Hail!

Madmitch
I was also curious about such behavior re passing up the free transfer.
However after thinking about it and giving the management team some credit I tried to think from the inside out.
I can see several reasons for this.
1. What is the cost of bring through a team from the reserves? It is prolly not as high as 500k. However not every player makes it. So for those that do- they must be burdened with the development costs of those that did not. If they persistently fail to recover these costs they may go-under I don’t want to bankrupt the system while I still depend on it.
2. Bad blood, if we steal players from our parochial teams it will create a bad business environment. These sweetners I think put us in the preferred Customer status. Never know what other gems they may uncover for me. I just outsourced my youth development with no risk.
3. And most important in my view. We may need votes from these teams in the future when we restructure / leave the league etc. If we treat them with contempt throw our weight around too much - then they will take whatever opportunities to humble us later.
These were a couple of my thoughts. I would sanction payment of upto ½ mill for a very good prospect if it met either or all of the above. You may feel differently but as I say I could feel ok in doing this. Of course they may have just blundered, but I am giving them the benefit of the doubt here.
Maditch,I really enjoy your financial analysis and all your postings. I love the squeaky wheel - I get concerned when the conversations are to one sided or when dissenters are marginalized. Keep it up.
-
Kojo
As you might say yourself, it was purely tongue in cheek and hardly constitutes constant sniping. Apologies if offence was taken.
However I do happen to think p8ddy (and madmitch earlier on) were asking a relevant question. if you are going to make a statement about someone you have to defend it when asked. Surely that is the basis of discussion?
Anyhoo if you want me to add something to the discussion I think where we will see the benefits of Mark Wilson is in his ability to cross the ball. Something that we haven't had in a full back for a long while.
And this can only be a benefit to us while John Hartson is playing in the team.
How about that?
Hail hail.

I hope Mark Wilson is the long term answer to celtic defensive problem. I wish him all the best in his time at Celtic. However, i must confess that he is a player that has not caught my eye in the spl.
I imagine he has ability and hopefully bags of potential. Looking at his cv he has the basis of some pedegree and the fact that he has been offered more than four year contract is a vote of confidence that GS has bought the right type of player.
I think he has the experience and the composure to go straight into the side at the weekend although GS does prefer his players to get in to the side on merit.
The Caldwell signing does not excite me and I can only think GS sees him as a replacement for some other player.
I watched the killie game on channell 67 and I was impressed with some of the passing and movement. There is definitely some potential in this team though I believe it depends on certain players being available most of the season
Magic and Nakamura are standouts with Malony not far behind. The midfield needs more steel with mobility (Keane?) and I'm not sure if Lennie will survive the summer.
PS, Tom64 all the best for the rest of the week, hope you get the all clear
-
the hungarian is normally a left sided midfielder, but he has played recently as a left back in a 4-4-2 system
he's a decent height, so maybe thats where he will feature if signed.
-
Just watched an interview with Fargo, sorry, Billy Conolley on Celtic TV. The man has quite an eye for talent. In the interview taken last season when asked who out the current squad could fit into the Lisbon Lions team he said Maloney (who wasn't getting a game at the time) and Lenno (although he was going to say Sutton).
Kinda lost a bit of respect for him when he said he would cheer on England if Scotland were out the World Cup - I suppose that's just something a non-exile just can't understand.
-
My dear friend, Waller 1888,
I have no knowledge of the destination that you have mentioned as BOBO'S ultimate.
My info is that Bobo will be around until at least next June 2006.
He and Nitro Glycerine have much in common, therefore he is not a popular commodity, in the Celtic Warehouse.
Unless he has a complete turn- around and suddenly displays a more Uncommonsensical approach to his play........ then I am sure, he is on the Managers...Things to eschew List.
Virgo, I am sure is the Lever that will turf him out of the team.....
We shall see,when Bobo returns.
Hail! Hail!

Since Monday night is trivia night I thought it appropriate to post a comment about a Rough Guide publication titled "The Top 11 of everything Bhoyish". Someone (sorry can't remember who) posted yesterday praising this wee book saying that they bought it for £2 in the St Enoch Centre. I bought this book in the summer (for £4.99) and spent a couple of hours in the sunshine reading through it. It is full of inaccuracies, I gave up counting at around 40! Some examples, "Hail Hail the Celts are hear being sung after 1892 Cup final!" "Johnny Doyle was sent of in the first half of the 4-2 game" and "Henrik scored against Celtic in the Nou Camp". There are many many more. I will be buying Lonely Planet guides in future before going on my hols. Very Rough Guides more like!

The channel is notoriously rough this time of year. They had to delay D-Day for that very reason. The good Knight introduced me to his squire in the hope he could aid me across. The clouds cleared allowing me to survey for a spell, until the seas picked up buffeting and buffering me to the point I disembarked sickened to my stomach by the experience. I think I may scuttle.
There will be only another couple of attempts I fear. I am asking for my carriage fee for this month to be reversed and suspended until I cross the channel. We will see.

Martin O'Neill was not allowing Stephen McManus to leave.
Stephen was persuaded by MON and Kenny McDowall to stay. MON told him he expected him and John Kennedy to be the 2 CB's for years to come.
Welcome young Mark to the House of Hoops.
-
MickMac
Just one other point to make - it is difficult for most players to make the step up from the reserves to the first team and takes a bit of time to adjust.
It is therefore very difficult to then be asked to cover for someone who has even less experience than you playing next to you.
It is hardly surprising that Micks form has dipped. To his credit he has scored vital goals for us during this dip in form and has scored more than our wooden striker.
I expect his form to pick up again when we get a left back in the team who knows the job and he is then only expected to do his own job and cover from time to time like a CB in a real back 4.
-
That should be scored more in 2006.
-
My dear friend Martinobhoy,
Perhaps I was out of line.
I am willing to offer my apology for my toney riposte.
All hatchets are now suitably buried!
Your point regarding Mr. Wilson's worth at having the RARE (it seems!) ABILITY to pass the FOOTBALL to a friendly face, with accuracy, is what has been lacking in Mr. TELFERS GAME.
Mr. TELFER, in my opinion, is a good stuffy defender, I can not offer much against his defensive abilities.....but as I mentioned last week......
Mr.Telfer Has TO GO......
GIVING THE BALL AWAY, NEEDLESSLY TO OPPONENTS, is a DISASTER IN THE MAKING.
And Mr. TELFER'S BAD DISTRIBUTION of the FOOTBALL is QUITE CHRONIC!
To conclude.....
Yes, your point is well taken, pal
Wilson WILL MAKE A FINE ADDITION...
HIS distribution is IMPECCABLE..... I AM TOLD,by one who Knows.
We shall see, we shall see!
Hail! Hail!

Since I started posting on here I have tried to avoid criticising individual players but your summation of Paul Telfer is spot on.
I have always believed that football is a simple game in that if you have the ball there ain't a darn thing the opposition can do to hurt you. Unfortunately Paul's ability to find an opposition player with a pass is almost as good as another Paul's (McStay) abiltity was to find a hooped jersey.
He may take a wee while to find his feet but I have high hopes for young Mark Wilson.
-
Well said aout giving him encouragement for a while, unfortunately there are a number of 'customers' who attend Celtic Park these days who may not afford him this time.

hanoibhoy old thread is gone..could you post answer on 'new-old' thread????
kojo did we really blow £10M on scheidt. is there more to this scandal? how much did john colquhon get? were there any other british agents involved? we're talking about a new stand, or a training academy, or a share issue.
-
My dear friend, San_Fran_Tic,
I offer you my COMMISERATIONS.
Maybe your cancellation and re-application is the way to go.
But I must offer that Chan67, does have a lot to offer.
I have just watched the now quiescent and Buffering FREE Killie AFFRAY, in re-run mode.
Marvellous, simply stachey!
I watched it 3 times ......
Conclusion:
Maloney was the MAN O' THE MATCH!
Naka, of course, right at his Tail!
Stan, in the First Half....
Excellent......did not put one foot wrong..... second half.....
HMMMMMMMMMMF! Could be effects of recovering from his injuries... Still good performance.
Keano........ Maybe this sounds a tad crazy....but ........I thought that he was the CAT'S SLEEPING APPAREL!..... Excellent!
We have yet to see Keano ....as....well, KEANO!
He does have a PATINA of IRON OXIDE.. that is obvious.....but a few more games.......and he will be back to his SPARKLING BEST!
Wallace....again.......my sentiments goes against the majority.... Bordering on EXCELLENT!
His inter-play with MALONEY was devastating to the Killie defense,at Times...........
Responsible for a beautiful run, that resulted in a goal!
Yes! we must find a place for MR. WaLLACE....... Full back is beyond him, but only because of his lack of stature at High Crosses into the Penalty Area.
No. He cannot be allowed to continue at L.B.
The Welsh Dragon.......... He was Flaming at the MOUTH,on Sat.
Excellent shift. And looking quite agile as well......strange !
The TAWNEY EAGLE....... a fair debut after so long in the side-lines..
But his inherent dangerous ability to make the telling first time pass, makes him a winner in my book.
Will go from strength to strength.
As I have mentioned previously....
One SHOULD NEVER MAKE ANY PROFOUND JUDGEMENTS ON A PLAYER'S addition to any game, until one has gazed many times at Re-runs of that game.
Incidents that had appeared at first blush to paint a woeful picture of a players short-comings, many times in retrospect, was the incorrect one.
Celtic on Saturday were very very entertaining and weaved some stunning thrilling moves.
All in all .....
A fine day at the OFFICE!
Hail!
Hail!

on watching the game what struck me was the movement offered by maloney, naka, zurawski and also the importance of petrov.although lennon has had a good season i think for europe we need keane in the middle.
does it make sense bringing bridge on loan,if he is not here next year.
all in all get our defence sorted and the home euro games will be electric

With regards to our new purchase in young Master Wilson - one for the future. Let the faithful give him all the time in the world to settle in.
However, I am not too sure about Mr Caldwell. An eratic centre half (not only down to his mistake on Saturday) Do we not have enough of them at CP?
Sunday - Telfer, Virgo, Keane and Wallace
I hear that Amoruso, the Brazilian just signed for AC Milan from Sau Paulo - did we not have him on trial a few seasons back?
-
CQN technical problems,
Can anyone help me with my online teething problems.
Logging on to CQN seems to be ok. However after reading the top posts I then start to scroll down all the blogs. All seems fine for a half hour or so until suddenly a dark shadow appears from behind the seat. I then receive the following "messages".......
"Your not on that thing again!"...
"Your getting addicted, this is ridiculous!"......
"Is that you for the night?"....
And so on. Does anyone else suffer these problems and is there any suggestions as to how to overcome them??
Welcome to paradise Mr Wilson
-
My dear friend, McGrory for Arsenal,
The figure I mentioned.......10,000,000 pounds covered many aspects of the transaction...... At one time Celtic were paying part of his wages at CORINTHIANS( I believe that was his Brazilian CLUB)
The original fee of 6,000,000 Pounds included the agents(PLURAL)
cut....... some say 1,500,000 Pounds. Also a Hefty Insurance Premium that was in the original contract..
There are other expenses too.....
However, the sum that I gave is at the most as accurate as one could calculate.
That is why I get so TESTY, when I read of silly and nonsensical statements regarding the FINANCIAL KNOW HOW of the PRESENT CELTIC FINANCIAL GURU!
HUUUUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMF!
Pierre Lavalle is the CELTIC MAN O' THE YEAR!
Believe it!
Hail! Hail!

My best mate works at Tannadice (actually its Eddie Thompson) and he told me over dinner tonight that this guy can pass, cross, has pace and is good in the air. I am well chuffed we have bought Marco Van Basten er I mean Mark Wilson.
For the sake of the young lad, lets not get carried away here. He is only twenty-one and will need time to become a player good enough for Celtic.

I hear Hibs have signed one Centre Back and possibly another soon.
I wonder if this might hasten the Caldwell move ? They don't need the cash as they are one of few not in debt and making a profit this year but maybe the treatment he got from Hibs fans on Saturday and impact on team might just be enought to encourage a compromise on price for a quick sale ?
Paul 67
Naka is showing all the critics who wrote him off before a ball was kicked how wrong they were. I for one am delighted after hearing a journo in Bratislava talk of Fernando kicking him up the park in the first OF game. We then heard how he was just being bought for the exposure in Japan ?
Do you have any idea /detail of how Celtic has progressed in unearthing the apparent 'Goldmine' from Japan ? Have they made a yen yet ? if so how ?
From where I sit it looks like he is a truely fantastic player, who is improving each game, but I have no understanding if the benefits go beyond that other than the usual tabloid nonsense.

My dear friend, Waller1888,
Never look too far into the Future, when the subject is SOCCER.
If it is deemed that a Loan of a player can help the Celtic to negotiate a few PUDDLES....... well ..... lie back and enjoy the trip.
I know that loans in the Past were not too spectacularly successful..... but with all due respect to MON...... all of the loans, with the exception of THE FLEA.....were disastrous.
Simply because of MON'S Temperament.
He just did not plan for the future...
MON was strictly a CONTEMPORIST..... Never change a winning combo....stick to the tried and true........
then.....
Suddenly THE WATCH has WOUND DOWN...... Needs RE-Winding, and badly.......
What to do~ What to DO?
So he was monotonous in his ability to act too LATE.....
The WINDOW IS CLOSING ........ GRAB SOMETHING>.....just don't stand there........
DWIGHT YORKE,you say?
YES! YES! He'll do
Juninho? Sounds good to me!
Camara 2 million ! I'll take him!
The POWERS THAT BE,In charge at Parkhead, now, are......
HORSES OF A DIFFERENT HUE!
So have confidence.
If they bring in a LOANEE.....then FINE...BY ME!
And,people ...Please do not bring up the mistakes(?) that the Manager has signed for Celtic......
The Li'l Admiral had not much time to renovate an aging and wound down team, when he arrived....
So he got what was available at the right price......
But all in all ......... The present managerial incumbent has done very well........ TOP O' the POPS!
When he has not been pressed for time, his selections and additions to the squad have been excellent!

Welcome and G’day Opus40.
Hope you are correct on Mark.
Jimtim, everyone I speak to about Du Wei in the reserves agrees with you, but there are clearly matters there that have kept him from the team.
The picture is confused.
Kojo, wait on the tide going out.
Plato, don’t know what they are up to with Du Wei.
Noel, I remained consistent to my beliefs, and refused to read the letter in The Herald, so thank you for your update.
As you say, Kelly seems to have a remarkably short memory.
I met the man once. Hmm. Nuff said.
P8ddy, not that I going to stand up for Peter Lawwell (hmm, well not this week), but if you think he could have said ‘no’ to Martin O’Neill on Bobo’s contract I believe you are mistaken.
Remember me alluding to a “management vacuum”? Hmm.
Monteblanco, I suffer from the same technical problems. I’m adding extra sugar to her tea.
Burnley78, Naka was unearthed through the old scouting system (believe it or not).
He is peerless at Celtic Park, the ideal footballer, the example for us to aspire too. Those who cast dispersions on him in the summer (hmm) should be ashamed.
No idea how the finances are working out.
-
These Miller rumours will not go away. I hope this is wrong (and not because he has played for Rangers). The boy is not good enough - not near good enough.
Well done for signing Wilson - a very positive move forward.
-
Saw this on some website. Could this mean Caldwell may join this month or is the prenuptual agreement all signed up?
Hibernian have snapped up former Blackburn defender Oumar Kondé.
The 26-year-old has joined the Edinburgh club until the summer of 2007 after impressing in training last week.
Kondé made over 80 appearances for FC Basle in his native Switzerland before Blackburn paid £400,000 for his services in 1998.
He spent a year at Ewood Park before moving to Germany with Freiburg and, most recently, Hansa Rostock.
-
Kojo, hmmm.
There is an article that will never be written here.
Dwight Yorke, Juninho, Camara, Laursen, Hedman, Fernandez, etcetera.
But you know what? I don’t really care. He was OUR man, Juninho’s and all. If Mr S does half as well I will be very pleased.
My old (sorry) friend Neg Anon.
Again I must say, you are wrong (sorry). The Miller rumours will go away. Just don’t listen to those trying to sell you advertising.

yes, I have suffered the same "technical problem" as you mention.

My dear friend, Stevie 21,
One thing I pride myself in....is my being Not inconsistent, in my consistency.
Sure, I have labelled,Stan as a competent journeyman.....that is his overall title in my opinion..
But I have also mentioned that he aspires to the Heights of greatness, in some games, at sometimes, then inexplicably drifts out of the game.
His
inconsistency in exhibiting Star ability, is what prompts me to view him as an ordinary player.
To warrant the adulation, that he receives from many members of this community, he should be a far more consistent and matchwinning performer.
That is why, whether he Stays or Strays, leaves me uninterested.
On Sat. he performed admirably , making allowances for his recent recovery, from an injury...
But as I say ........which Stan is going to show up at Motherwell?
Hail! Hail!
Kojo.

mcgrory-for-arsenal,
RE: regards earlier discussion about cqn'rs boycotting herald. this is childish behaviour. if i tell you that a fortnight ago The Herald interviewed 3 journalists for the job of editor and all 3 were catholics would that put you at ease over any bias in the paper??
Sshhhhhhh!!! You'll have that FuhrerFuhrer mob frothing at the mouth for a week!
(;-0)
Montebianco,
I used to have those "dark shadow" problems, but now wait until the sound of snoring is heard from the upstairs bedroom, then log on in peace. (:-0) I used to try to wake the "shadow" but, four weans later, I've learned from my mistakes!

Mcgrory for arsenal, it is not me that keeps alluding to the Fanfan story, I happened to let slip that Zsa Zsa Gabor at Ibrox was duped into signing him and people have been trying to tease the story out ever since.
Not a word has passed my lips.
Lets wait until Zsa Zsa is having a really bad day & people are looking for ammunition to throw at him.
Big picture always.

Paul67..
I know what you mean re Bobo - However, it's the format of the contract he was given that is my problem with the deal. I think that Bobo is the only defender we have at the club (excluding the banished Didier) and I was desperate for his services to be retained, however the contract he was offered was damaging to Bobo and the club. MON would not draw up the contract, and surely it was Peter Lawwell who came up with the contract details. Equally, how can Bobo be fiscally viable 6 months ago and now he's clearly a drain on the club? I think Peter Lawwell has to take responsibility for potentially harming our club. For instance, if MON was still the Manager, hw would this situation be handled? Would the club be dragged into bankruptcy simply because no one had the courage to stand up to Martin? I think this situation actually brings up more questions than answers.
I suspect the European and Scottish cup failures are damaging our club significantly.
I think this is the crux of asset management. That no one had the courage to stand up to MON tells a story of the performance of some of the personell. Maybe I'm being harsh but we shall see what the transfer windows bring.
If we downsize and sign players from lesser grades of football, I would hope that the prudent asset management now in effect would allow a similar percentile reduction in our season ticket prices to match our new, re-evaluated ambitions and targets. I'm all for us being ran as a business, but this runs two ways, if we are a business I expect to pay the market rate for products from the company. I'm playig devils advocate a touch, but I'm trying to make a serious point re the direction of our club. And the difference in leverage between our old manager (carried a lot of clout) and our new manager (who apparently has less gravitas given the moves to shift players in our fire sale).
This may seem a negative way of looking at things, but I think there are some very hard questions Celtic have to ask themselves corporately about where the club will/should be in 5 years.
/p
[who is doing rather well controlling the bolding, even if I do say it myself!] :-)

There is some merit in your comments Paul on McManus having saved us points with crucial goals. However, to me, a defender is there to defend. Goals are a bonus. McManus has cost us as many as he has scored in my opinion. He's a very honest but a very ordinary centre back. And he certainly isn't a left back...have we not learned the lessons of big Joos!
It will be an interesting few weeks to see how WGS tinkers with the defence. Wilson must go to right back but surely not Telfer at left back. What's Camara done...not the best but better than we have!

My dear friend, Vertwolf,
Yes,pal....... you took it all in.. correctly.
However, that is only because you are solid judge and a skilled afficianado of good Soccer.
I do not attain to that pinnacle of Soccer perspicacity, I confess.
Therefore, I have to stubbornly watch the play over and over, before I can make a final judgment.
On reading over your synopsis, you are in lock-step with my findings.
All in all .....a SPLENDID CELTIC TEAM IN THE OFFING.......
Sure a few wrinkles and warts here and there , but the story goes.......
The beautiful princess, has to kiss quite a few FROGS, before she meets the one who will change into a Handsome Prince......
The Li'l Admiral is in the Process of Meeting a few FROGS before he strikes the winning defensive set-up!
But he WILL, he WILL!

johnbhoy -- our guys do a bit of frothing as well.... the whole daily record palaver was a joke. the editor at the time of the thugs and thieves debacle was english and didnt have a scoobie about the auld firm rivalry he was just running a story. granted a bit ott (however im willing to accept we have a fair few 'thugs' in our squad) but our fans put the paranoia psyche on ......
the story didnt criticise our club or our fans just some drunk footballers.
there was no malice against our beloved club but the bhoys 'foamed at the mouth' --daily ranger and all that nonsense.
paul--'duped' what do you mean? dodgy video? you can tell me , it will go no further :-)

cheers hanoi, shame the way RB has been hijacked and turned into a major establishment figure.
watched a bit of rangers tv tonite, goram-uvf and derk ferguson on phone in, it was painful.

I would not be surprised to wee a big bid come in for Stan within the next two weeks.
7 maybe pushing to 8, the board will be ever showing their smiling knashers in private of course. Stan will get the blame move to the EPL and all that blarney. What do you do buy at cost price a Hungarian winger and place the wee man Maloney at the centre of midfield.
-
Malone19
ah right, i get you now! Ok, then in this case just go into the file and choose "selective hearing"
No I didnt see/hear the podcast, I subscribe to chan67 so I usually watch the press conferences on that, good idea though, well in Paul67!

Care in the community obviously needs to be tightened up; some clearly mentally-distressed looking blue-wearing fans have just appeared on Scotsport. I know the programme is woeful, but trawling for ratings on the back of "let's laugh at the feeble-minded" spots, is really poor taste. What next, in-depth interviews with Eck?
Bonne nuit.

mmm, 20 foot snow drifts in Japan this week.

A warm welcome to Mark Wilson, i'll be honest and say i haven't seen him play much. That doesn't matter it's how he plays NOW in a Celtic top that matters.
On the Kenny Miller non-story how about this scenario; we sign Miller for free then punt him 6 months into his contract for a million pounds.
How about the same medicine for this Hungarian chappie, sign him for a nominal fee, 6 months to showcase his talent, then bring in some filty lucre for him. Meanwhile the youngsters are brought on and bedded in, with the signing of high class players funded by the sale of players bought on bosmans....over simplistic i grant you, but all revenue streams must be looked at.
-
On the hungarian player:-
We have excess in players on the left side of midfield so maybe he is viewed as the old "inside left" forward position? If via the rumour he has pace to burn it would fit WGS vision on our team. Even if he was to play the 2 positions? Think Chelsea? they have Crespo and drogba who consistantly play up front yes? Either one or the other backed up by several speedy wingers on the left and right. I.E chelsea's variation on 4-3-3. Celtic seem to be heading with a similar tactical approach. WGS likes formations and tactics so he needs to identify the personel to play them.Or maybe he's a bonus to the jig-saw?
Or maybe i'm just thinking too hard!
Hail Hail Mark Wilson. Live the Dream.
-
Mcgrory
you seem to have a lot of information on the inner sanctum of the media playground
Knowledge of tabloid edotors, who is being interviewed for certain positions and even thier religion as well as a couple of other snippets.
Your poor attempt at helping the herald in it's new appointment also seemed a little sketchy.
Then there are all the questions for derisory information as regards one of the companies I have some shares in ?
mind your step
or have I called it wrong sun

The dark shadow has passed. CQN widow has retired for the night.
P8ddy
I think it a bit harsh to say WGS has not the same clout as MON. When MO'N left, the club had a new wage structure to which GS has had to work to. If this does not suit the old guard then so be it. Times change, we must adapt.
The calibre of plater we sign in this widow will reflect the task in hand i.e. to secure the SPL.
Come the summer there may be better calibre players available. I.e. players who are involved in europe just now.
At the moment I think we have a very capable team for Europe. (totally excluding the defence!)
Big McManus is a rough diamond and I think gets unjust critcism. The two full back signed are nowhere near good enough for CL duty and I am sure WGS will address this.
I know this will mean the defence will have to hit the ground running and it failed spectacularly this season, but I for one will give WGS the benifit of the doubt.
For Strachan/Telfer see O'Neil/Lennon and for Camara see Michael Gray. Not much to separate in terms of clout.
I feel(hope) that prudence in this window and with the kickbacks from the far east we might see the bar being raised in the summer in terms of quality signings.

Did anyone here watch the recent Scotland v Italy World Cup game at Hampden?
Who was quite clearly Man of the Match, having given the cream of Serie A's defenders the most torrid of afternoons?
In fact, this promising lad scored a goal and showed bags of pace, determination and no little skill.
This mystery man seems to have come on a ton over the past 12 months.
Ach, did he not score two goals against Norway in Oslo as well?
Hmmm, not bad for a "failure".
(Tin hat on.... fire away ;-0)
-
Johnbhoy ,
He's crap man. Italy were not unduly bothered and scoring 2 in oslo isnt beyond most international strikers now is it?
Now Robbie Keane..... there's an international striker. :~)
-
JohnBhoy
Can I have the first shot?
Playing one or two good games does not make you a good footballer.
Miller misses a helluva lot more than he scores. He is a distinctly average player.
He was a national hero for a few days but that's all he'll ever come to.
Clyde manager has turned into somewhat of a national hero as well - wonder why!
McGrory for Arsenal
Which paper do you work for? Or is it the Sports "journalist" union?
Celtic fans have every right to be so-called paranoid, admitidly there are occassions where we are unjustified but throughout the history of the club there is plenty to be paranoid about.
The Herald are trying to win back the Rangers audience by employing one of them in a way a large % of them can relate to. Whether you think this is just business or a step too far is entirely up to the individual and they can make their own decision.
-
Kojo,
Maybe I have got the wrong end of the stick here, but do you think that the Hungarian lad will be the replacement for Stan?
Despite their obvious difference in positions, I see this as being a very sensible move. For with the lad playing on the left hand side, it would allow either Maloney or Nakamura to play their natural position of central midfield, with the other playing on the right.
They would also have either Lennon or Keane behind them for cover.
It sounds a very impressive midfield to me. Obviously this is assuming that the Hungarian is the real deal.
-
Kojo
I think you obviously see "Hunky" as an ideal replacement for our journeyman. However, and I apologise in advance for the semantics, you say that whether Stan stays or strays your uninterested.
You've made a lot of comments on the subject for one supposedly uninterested - dissinterested maybe, uninterested no.
I do however agree with your stance on this one, seeing Stan as a good competent player, no more no less.
-
Midfield left...is it just me who sees this as maloneys (by far) best position?!
he has an amazing abilty to either hit the byline by using his skill or cutting inside and pinging one or playing a through ball??
when he plays there other teams become streched on the left handside and the hounding of our key man (naka) isnt as persistant.....?
we dont need a left mid!
and qotsa75....snapping up bosmans and selling them 6 months later as a revenue stream???
players are notouriously stupid but i think the bosman signings would dry up once they realise what there fate is at parkhead!!
like the idea of the 4-3-3 but...sort of reverting to almost 5 across mid when under attack??
hail hail
-
Kojo
Oh joy that you used the word 'uninterested' correctly. Disinterested, meaning impartial, is one of the three most abused wordsin the English language, the others being disassociated (not a word) and disorientated (also not a word).
On the subject of Celtic, would anyone else agree that the acquisition of a reasonable left back (McNaughton?) would allow the two centre backs to play in their favoured positions on the pitch, rather than constantly covering for missing full backs? I don't think a centre back has to be a world beater - with two 'safe' full backs on either side, Boruc behind and Keane (not Lennon) in front, the centre backs could concentrate on their main job.
i.e. defending the centre of the pitch from balls being played in front of them, rather than being pulled wide constantly or having to lunge in at the half way line due to lack of a midfield.
-
Interesting day. So far we have Sutton out, Keane in, Wilson in. Looks to me as if we are a bit stronger, certainly better balanced now.
Disappointed to see so many second guessing the manager. Folks have been claiming we should have signed Wilson for nothing in the summer, and that somehow this deal could have/should have been better structured.
Oh dear. Think about it, folks. At his age, we would have had to pay compensation even if the player was out of contract.
PLUS the manager said he wanted to wait for a few months and make his own mind up!!! .
Sorry for shouting, but please stop making up crazy stories just to run down a manager that you don't like.
Sorry for the rant, but this should be a more thoughtful place.
Kojo...agree re reruns. I was in a much better mood, having watching the game again, without the impediment of stress...:)
For those intent in analysing every move (and every non-move, it seems).....please look at the longer term. It was always going to take MON's successor several windows to re-shape the team.
We are getting there....but everything is inter-related. Bobo goes or stays last summer.....that affects other potential moves. Some acquisitions had to be stop-gap. there wasn't a left back on the books. Agathe thought he was worth 30 grand a week. Season is starting, window is closing. we need to put a team on the park.
Let's give the manager some credit for thinking things through and trying to get it right. And let's enjoy the ride. This has been a surprising season. Methinks there are a few more to come.
Especially for us Skynyrd fans::)

The downside of this is that alot of the Scoland team will be Celtic players, and that means more chance of picking up injuries, more games etc...
I think the best internationalists to have are Scottish. They will travel less than our Japanese/Bulgarian/Polish etc. bhoys and benefit from the cancellation of the league games for Scottish fixtures.

Gavil. Was today the first day for this at the Herald. I never had problems last week. Were you off today? I was. lovely and lazy.

Sanfran_tic.
I believe it only applies to the Monday edition as it is a tabloid type pull out in the print edition.
Classic case of turning off your base. Tuesday's available for online use.
No holiday today I'm afraid. Sun shone again after a baltic weekend with temps falling from near 60 at kick off Saturday to an ice storm and snow blizzard Saturday evening. Still it beats 30 straight days of rain.
How is your basement drying out?
-
Basement is dry. It has been fairly dry since the New Year maybe 2 or 3 days of rain.
Are you in New Jersey Gavil? Do you know Woodbridge? I worked for a spell.
-
Yes I am in the great Garden State.
Before I went home based we had an office near Metro Park station around 97/98. And of course my wife regularly visits Woodbridge Mall. As it's only a few minutes from the GSP it's a handy drop off when I'm on my way to a Celtic game at the CSC.
BTW current Continental flights Newark direct to GLA are going for 470 bucks including all taxes. It's a great pity we don't have 2 home games in succession in Feb/March.

Aye...The CQN shadow has afflicted me too...
Regards the Herald..Started last Monday...No online access.
Consequently could not help think...
(The intro of DF, The new sports section. Mr, Speirs losing his Mojo for a while not so long ago, no online access with big launch in New Year). Scottish fans having to buy hard copy).

Got to prove the advertisers are getting their moneys worth....Got to get those sale figures up...Sign of the times gents..print media will not go gently though...
Ach it has been going downhill anyway....Speirs apart...

Before I don my own peejays, do you think the Herald management has looked at the effect the boycott of the DR had on circulation and blinked when faced with a Follow Follow inspired threat?
Anyone with press connections able to post recent circulation figures?
Looks like Andrew Murray will be on a long haul flight home tomorrow. He lost the first 2 sets 6-1 6-3 and is 3-1 down in the third.
-
Just getting my own to Gavil...
As i said (in a lazy way granted)...I believe that since the 'You Know Who You Are' Edict there have been uncharacteristic spasms from the Herald..(including Speirs..even though he printed a 'I will write what I like piece")....Maybe they are simply reacting to the market...but me thinks Murray had repercusiions..even if it was all perception...declining sales...he may have been given the credit...

Random thoughts on ra Meja
Interesting that the Evening Times did not follow it's sister paper on limited on-line access.
Maybe they assume people with computers don't read the Times.
On the other hand - people who can read don't read the Record.
I remember coming back from London one weekend and everyone had bumper stickers 'REAL SCOTS TRUST THE RECORD’
That was 1990 maybe. I was still rather raw, but I knew this much. Anyone with that line should never be trusted. Cynical and manipulative...wow I thought. Where do they get the courage to be so naked (lazy for Paul67) Do they feel we are the living dead. How can they not be afraid they will lose custom? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE. Does no one care?
Anyone else remember that campaign?

There have been many discussions about our pint sized left back recently.
His height is not the problem – he simply is not a left back and never will be. ( I bumped into Lizarazu in a bar a couple of nights ago and he was at least a foot shorter than myself – but it didn’t stop him winning World Cup / Euro Championship medals). The other world cup winning left back that is still currently playing is also vertically challenged but he had stacks of talent.
Personally, if Camara cannot be played for whatever reason, then I’d play Pearson at left back for the rest of the season.
Off topic – there’s a hilarious report of Tim Henman’s match in the Herald.

Kojo,
If you’re familiar with Paddington Basin you will be aware that the bridge was raised.

What was the general view on GS outburst on Setanta about 'opinions not mattering'. I thought it was very bold that he said it, but perhaps betrayed to 'them' that he was feeling the strain a bit.
Apparently (my mother tells me as I know longer listen ) there was some so called Celtic fan by the name of Ian Hamilton called a phone in last night to have a go at Strachan for saying the 'fans opinion didn't matter'. I didn't think that was what he meant at all. I would be interested in any views on this though.
