Celtic 2-1 Falkirk

Roy Keane sent Celtic ten points clear at the top of the SPL with his first goal for the club.

Keane, playing only his third game in five months, collected the ball after 33 minutes, 30 yards from goal, and carried the it 20 yards into a wide position before being fouled.

The resultant Shaun Maloney free kick was cleared to Keane 20 yards from goal for the former Republic of Ireland captain to score with a deflected shot.

Stephen McManus continued his habit of scoring important goals two minutes from half-time when he swept a corner kick high into the net.

Falkirk opened well and denied Celtic space in advanced positions throughout the first half, though the loss of the second goal seemed to sap their coordination, as Celtic controlled most of the play after the interval.

Maciej Zurawski hit the crossbar and then headed inches over early in the second half, as Celtic looked to be in control of the game.

Dion Dublin can be pleased with his Celtic debut; he talked constantly, every pass was acknowledged, every move had an instant inquest.

Artur Boruc was a virtual spectator all evening, though could do nothing on 82 minutes when Kenny Milne had the freedom of Celtic Park to score from the edge of the area.

Falkirk finished strongly, with their best player, Alan Gow causing problems with his direct running.

Daniel McBreen did not read the script in injury time when he was left unmarked inside the Celtic penalty box and shot against the outside of the post.

Celtic will go to Ibrox on Sunday with a ten point lead at the top of the league and face a Rangers team…

FOLLOWING allegations made on a Real Radio programme last month, the following statement was read out by presenter Ewen Cameron on Real Radio tonight.

"On the Real Football Phone-in programme broadcast by Real Radio on January 13th this year, I alleged that Peter Lawwell, in his role as chief executive of Celtic plc, and the board of Celtic plc had been untruthful to Celtic supporters and to the media in relation to player contracts.

"Real Radio and I acknowledge and accept that these allegations were completely without foundation, were unreasonable and ought not to have been broadcast. Real Radio and I wish to retract the allegations and to apologise unreservedly to both Mr Lawwell and the Celtic Board for the distress and damage caused by the broadcasting of the allegations."

First game I havent seen this year. From various accounts it seemed that Bobo, Keane and Dublin had steadying influences on the team. Does Wee Gordo have a dilemma for Sunday? Keane to stay in and Lennie out?

Boruc: 6, didnt have much to do, from where I was sitting he looked off his line at the goal! Waiting to see it again though.

Telfer: 7, Defensively lost his man too many times in the late stages, seemed to be relying on others picking up players (in his "zone"), looked nackered! Solid game otherwise, and better distrobution.

McManus: 7, Great goal, he's so good at that, and defo was more confindent and comfortable with Bobo back beside him.

Bobo: 7, Solid, stuck to defending (except for when he decided to go up front for 2 or 3 mins?!) He usually does this for two or three games then starts trying to be a football player again, so we should be ok for Sunday. GREAT to have you back big man.

Wilson: 6, Are you Jackie in disguise? Hope so! Good game but not natural on the left. Alot to go to be as good as Jackie but seems to do alot the same.

Maloney: 6, tireless, determined, fought hard, not as productive as he can be though, but gets points for effort and never giving up.

Keane: 9, MOM, World Class in glimpses, must stay in the team every week now. Only man who didnt seem to panic, had a great block on a cross in the last 30 seconds. I was right behind the goal, great view, what a strike!

Stan: 6, agree with the new contract sydrome as someone said earlier, but as usual he never stopped working hard.

Naka: 6, might well be dropped on Sunday to accomodate Lennon, played ok in flashes, but not his usual influence on the game. Even after hos game tonight though, I'd still have picked him because he makes opponents worry all the time, and usually gets two markers.

Magic: 6, quiet game, had a few chances, unlucky to hit the bar. The usual good runs, and movement.

Dublin: 7, really good debut, lots of talking, shouting, and fight in his game. BBJ will replace him but I think he'll be a good back up considering our injuries.

We changed the team around and coped very well for 80+ minutes. I turned to my two boys and said that all we needed was to keep a clean sheet and we would really have the upper hand for Sunday. Then the sky fell in and we had 10 terrible minutes which were as poor as the other 80 had been excellent.
The sky, having fallen, seems to have brought the chicken littles out to crow- we told you so. I wish I could believe that we would have heard praise for some of the quality play that occured, if the ending had been satisfactory, or even just quieter.
Did you guys see big Dion hit a 60 yard cross-field pass from left to right with the outside of his boot in a crowded final third? Did you see Naka spinning past players who were intent on clattering him with no protection from the worst ref outside that Mr. Colombo who sent MON to the stands? Did you see another stonewaller denied to Zurawski at 2:0 which would have killed all nervousness?
Now I hated that final 10 mins. I had promised my boys that we would not see a Dundee Utd. type collapse again and we nearly did it. McBreen could have scored. Then, I could understand some of the negativity.
My summation- we were 10 minutes away from a very good performance and we spoiled it, but we're not doomed. The radio reports on Clyde were a joke. They said WGS must have watched a different match from them (well, at the very least, he saw it through eyes and a brain possessed of some football knowledge, I suppose) but some of the posters here are very close to agreeing with them.

Firstly, can someone please fetch Kojo his prozac? He's clearly picking fights. Kojo...enough is enough. If you want to argue on fact, please do so. Otherwise cease and desist with the playground stuff. I've no beef with you - we are both Celtic fans who want the best for our team. Can we please have a bit of the respect you are accorded reciprocated?

I'm starting to feel like "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores" was written for me.

On the subject of tonights game. I thought Keane strolled through it, he was excellent in defence and attack. Bobo gave the defence a much needed physical edge and Dion Dublin had a quiet but effective debut. This being said, there were some awful lapses in the defence again. Maybe a matter of confidence, but when Falkirk went toe to toe with Celtic we wilted. It's hard to know if it was us getting panicky or if it was due to Falkirk adopting a more direct approach, but we're lucky to have won the game given the last 10 minutes. I didn't think Mark Wilson looked comfortable however.

If Keane doesn't retain his place in the side I'll be very disapointed. There are worrying aspects to the team, but for 60 of the minutes we played some nice football. For 20 we were as toothless as Falkirk and for 10 we were terrified.

Given the other results on the night however, it's an acceptable result and hopefully a sign that we're starting to play a little better. Well done Celtic! :-)

It's a shame that every game is elevated to "make or break" status due to the faltering results we've experienced, but if we keep winning it'll be a step in the right direction.

    /p

I'd forgive WGS - if he sent out an under 18 team on Sunday.

I actually don't care about the result - a far as I'm concerned Rangers threw us 3pts this week already.

On the other hand if we hump them ...how long will the crowd be outside the stadium - baying for blood - david M more than ECk - I think.

I don't expect to see an other Hun team this bad. Even wee Bazza - who i rated highly as a player has gone all Pete Tong.

What a dream come true for Keane if he plays and plays well. He's not the type to let the big games pass him by.

    My preferred team would be:

    Arthur
    Wilson Bobo Mcmanus Pearson
    Petron Keane
    McGeady Malone
    Zurawski Hartson

Naka and Lenny to come on after 60 mins.

    Roll on Sunday

i thought big dion had a great first half debut for us tonight. he ran out of steam in the 2nd but that was fair enough.

sadly listened to clyde on the way home and couldn't believe my ears when i heard guidi say that dion and magic were the worst pairing he'd seen.

he was obviously watching a different game.

i thought they played well together and were both unlucky not to score. big dion certainly gives us another option on sunday.

keano also had a good game and had the fire in his belly tonight. that was great to see.

    welcome back bobo.

last 10 i was mincing it. they didn't deserve to score and we should have had the game won early on.

still think we miss a bit more dig in the midfield.

how we allowed falkirk to run from one end of the field to mcbreen missing a sitter without launching the player with the ball into the stand i'll never know.

    it's easy.
    last 5 minutes?
player with ball in own half?
    boot into stand.
    take the booking.
    threat over.

falkirk done it to us any time we got a move going. stopped us dead in our tracks.

try it celtic. it does work.

so happy to be 10 clear. we need this cushion as everyone is capable of beating everyone this season.

let's sit tight on sunday and finish them for good in the 2nd half.

For what it's worth................. I really enjoyed the game tonight. Without going thro' the whole team !!!! Boruc, still suffering from a lack of confidence. Balde, just what we needed. McManus, best game since...........????? Telfer, NO! . Wilson, ok. Midfield....................passable. Majic, hmmmm. With the right partner, a revelation methinks.
    But "The wanderer"?????.

I'll state the bleedin' obvious. I know nothing about football........ Never have, never will. What I do know is talent when I see it (McGeady, Malone, Ghod, Sutton, Lubo, etc) and tonight I watched a player that I knew nothing about before he had signed.............and I'll tell you this boy.................

This guy can play. 36? so what? A more composed, confident and skilful debut I have yet to see in the hoops. Definitely one for the future................ ;o) Seriously, I thought the man in "In The Green" had a fantastic debut. Well done DD.

Also, what do we need to do to get a godamn penalty?????????????

And another thing.................see if a guy's in or around the penalty box. don't let him make a pass, take a shot, hold the ball, or whatever. Just get rid FFS..............

If I may be so bold............... I have been wanting to post my thoughts, vis-à-vis, the divisions on this sight for some time. However, I have felt somewhat incapable of articulating my thoughts and feeling in reference to this very delicate matter. I seek to curry no favour, or to court any controversy, but the one thing that really pisses me off is reading opposing contributors denigrating this sight and their arguments on whichever subject is under discussion with personal attacks…………………

How old are we? What do we all SHARE a passion for?????????????

I know nothing. I am nobody. I am who I am. I agree and I disagree……………..and the world revolves…………………. Get over it guys. Read and accept each other’s point of view. Don’t disabuse this sight by sinking into personal attacks, please!!!!.

Anyhoo, getting back to my much earlier point of view……………….I know!!!!!!!!!!

Please take the time to read and digest this article . It really is worth the effort, I promise.

If you have taken the time to read………… I know, wordy, but worth it. Who could have filled the impossible shoes? Crap league. No money….etc, etc. Seriously???????????

We all have a common desire. Don’t we????????????????

Welcome back super. Where ya been?

Great performance overall. Keane was good in the middle. Naka showed signs of a resurgence seems he's clear from illness.Wilson at left back did ok. McNamara'esque somone said. Dublin had a good debut. Great back up for hartson. In all was pleased. The last 10 mins i'd put down to nerves. Having watched falkirk this season they do a lot of pressing in the last quarter of games. A clean sheet was nearly within our grasp.

Then the sheep filled in the bears , ewan got on his knees , hearts imploding again , hibees on a rampage so all we need is to win at Ibrox with KEANE on the scoresheet! If carlsberg did weekends .......eh?

    One happy tim.

Do you really think half of this team will make the european debut? Not a chance. We are sitting pretty at the top of the SPL. Watching the huns self destruct is a great pleasure which I have waited all my life to see. February and thier 4th in the SPL.

I for one am glad the huns are so poor. And hearts. To say we are just as bad is insulting. I have said it before and i'll say it again " i'd rather have artmedia away and clyde than to experience black sunday again ". What most of us felt that day i never want to feel again.

Clyde and artmedia away bruised all our ego's but its been done to death. Onwards and upwards. Lets all go to the death star , united as one and finish them off.

    Hi Paul,
Sorry to refer to the previous thread but today has been a sort of thread blitz :-)
I'd like to venture an opinion on the current debate on whether negative comments should be posted, I'm not making any comment or taking any sides on whether the Celtic team and manager are good bad or indifferent. However whilst Kojo made the point that this is a Celtic blog and therefore it should carry more a fan perspective and positive review of games in the case of this particular blog I would differ. If the blog is to become a realistic alternative source of news then it must gain a reputation for the truth, a pro Celtic spin certainly, but without people knowing that they can depend on a true and honest account of what is going on at the club in all areas why should they read this blog rather than the view,. I'm not criticising this blog in any way I've mentioned before how highly I rate it, but if it is to become a news service rather than remain one mans personal thoughts then negative as well as positive must be reported.
PlatowasaTim :- I've been desperately trying to hibernate till the start of next season, but damn this global warming, the waking nightmare continues. Right now the most optimistic thing I can come up with is to have that on the day your defence is a bit more shambolic than ours :-)

An interesting read on an alternative perspective on Celtic's begginings........

    Origins of Hibernian - 9

We conclude the second part of our look at the Origins of Hibernian Football Club today, reaching 1888 and the formation of a football club that was intended by some at least to be a mirror image of Hibernian. In the event things did not work our quite in that manner, and it was to spark a major crisis for Hibernian....

    Birth of Celtic Football Club

Brother Walfrid was doing a great deal of good work in Glasgow’s East End, through his Poor Children’s Dinner Table charity. He had called upon the good grace of his friends in Edinburgh many times, and did so again in 1887, asking Canon Hannan if Hibernian might play in a charity match against Renton in Glasgow. Canon Hannan of course immediately agreed, and the game took place on Clyde’s Barrowland ground. An astonishing 12,000 people turned out to watch the Scottish Cup holders draw 1-1. The money raised from this one game was beyond the dreams of anything Brother Walfrid had managed to raise in the past, and it is believed that this was the moment when he made up his mind that Glasgow should have their very own version of Hibernian Football Club.

The Irish Catholic community in Glasgow at this time numbered around 250,000, and Brother Walfrid knew that if Canon Hannan could raise so much from the Little Ireland community of Edinburgh that was a mere tenth of that number, then surely a similar side in Glasgow could do much more. It should not be thought that he in any way wished to harm Hibernian, far from it, he appreciated very much the help that he had received from Canon Hannan and the St Patrick’s CYMS. His reasoning was that he could not continue to expect Hibernian to help his community when they had so much work to do in their own. He endeavoured then to copy the lead of Canon Hannan, knowing that the Edinburgh priest would do all he could to aid him in his task.

Over the coming months several meetings were arranged in Glasgow to drum up support for the idea of a new ‘Hibernian’ in Glasgow. Some Irish Catholic leaders however could see some of the danger signs, as it was becoming apparent in these meetings that some of the men coming to the fore where business-minded with hints that personal gain rather than charitable aims were uppermost in their thoughts. Brother Walfrid however appeared oblivious to this as he pressed forward with his plans, taking everyone at face value.

By November Brother Walfrid was ready along with his supporters from St Mary’s Parish, and they revealed that a new football club would be formed. While most wanted the new club to be named Glasgow Hibernian, Brother Walfrid opposed this on the grounds that it would cause confusion. He got his way, and Glasgow Celtic was born. The real men behind this move however proved to be the businessmen, a builder from Donegal named John Glass and Pat Welsh, a tailor who had left Ireland under furtive circumstances 20 years previously. These men had seen the earning potential of a professional football club, and their subsequent methods of achieving their aims was to prove catastrophic for Hibernian Football Club.

    Misguided Delight

Hibernian though were delighted on hearing the news of the formation of Celtic Football Club, and typical of Hibs they made an immediate donation towards the expenses of forming the new club, letting it be known at the same time that anything they could do to help would be done. Hibernian continued blissfully unaware that the founding of Celtic might cause them even the slightest problem, after all did every Irish Catholic not see football as they did, as a means of doing some good for their communities? More important at this time for Hibernian was their first ever tour of Ireland; at last the men of Little Ireland were to visit the homeland of the fathers.

Michael Whelahan was joined by a large party of officials and players for the trip, including John and Philip Farmer who would play a major part in the future of the club. Hibs first game came on Monday 2nd April 1888 against Belfast Distillery, with Hibernian running out winners by three goals to one before a very large crowd. Twenty four hours later and Hibs defeated a United Belfast side 4-1, Hibernian this time earning a standing ovation from appreciative Irish fans.

One month later, Hibernian travelled to Glasgow to fulfil a promise Canon Hannan had made to Brother Walfrid, Hibernian would formally open Celtic Park with a game against Cowlairs. The match ended in a 0-0 draw but was a highly entertaining one for all that, the new Glasgow club benefiting greatly from gate receipts with Hibernian paying their own expenses. On 28th May, Celtic played their own first game, against Rangers, but as they still did not have a full team they leaned heavily on their friends from Edinburgh and seven of the players in their side that day had connections with Hibs – Celtic won the game 5-2.

    On Borrowed Time

In the following weeks Celtic played several games and each time used players borrowed from Hibernian. There were rumours doing the rounds of course about the intentions of the new Glasgow club, but these were dismissed by the Hibernian committee who simply would not believe that their close friends would mean them any harm. It’s a great pity that the Hibs men were so trusting, as John Glass and his partners were already making their own plans and these included financial inducements being offered to the best players in the Hibernian side that they might join Glasgow Celtic for the following season.

By August 1888, the Hibernian committee men had learned that the rumours where in fact true, and the cream of the best football side in Scotland would not be turning out for Hibernian, but rather had defected to Celtic and the riches being promised. Just as shocked as the Hibernian men were most of the Celtic committee as well, who had not been aware what John Glass and his supporters were doing. Even if Hibs had wished to take Celtic on like for like, they could not do so, the very being of Hibernian was that every penny earned went to charitable causes, Celtic had undertaking no such principles.

John Glass had recognised the massive financial rewards that would ensue from professional football. The game had gone professional in England sometime before, and Scotland was about to follow, all the same the way he set about using the loyalties of the Irish immigrant population left a sour taste in many a mouth. Celtic were seeking to have the best of both worlds, they would sign any players they wished while still retaining an appeal to the Irish community. Business had, not for the first time, trampled over idealism, money had spoken and it was not the first time in the history of Hibernian Football Club that they would suffer for their own ideals.

P8ddy, largely agree with your summary of the game, although a third goal, which our play deserved, would have made all the difference. All in, this was a better performance but there remains scope for improvement. Hopefully we can now go with a more settled team and see the return of the sharp, quick passing that we were treated to in November.

I think that the nervousness shown by the team and the support goes back to Fir Park last season and there are other examples of safe leads being lost, the Champions Cup final for example. The team should have had the game well won but life is nothing without excitement and the tea I had at the match came without milk!

Re your question on Shaktar, Milan and Barca group I would suggest it would be very hard to do worse than we did.

I attended all 6 matches and my recollections are that we lost 9 goals in the 1st 3 games when the group was 'live'. we then struggled to beat an injury hit 10 man Shaktar (despite referre help) at Parkhead. we then could not beat either Barc or Milan to secure UEFA place despite neither oposition team needing to get results in those games.

The short answer is whe would struggle to do worse than that campaign. We certainly would be no more of a laughing stock, but with half the wagebill that we are currently paying.

Anyway I hope the results last night didn't spoil you and Ardoch's night / script too much.

well well well, lordy lordy lordy....

A decent performance for 75 minutes from one and all...even Telfer was getting pass marks from me for his link-up work with Naka.

We may have found Jackie 2 in Wilson, Keano played a stormer and big Dion ran his big legs off until the 75th minute when I think wgs may have turned the power off in the team...What do we have to do to keep a clean sheet?

I said to Baldy by the miracle of mobile telephony that I hope we're three goals clear by 75 mins on sunday or we might be in for a tough ride from the orcs. Every week it seems the lhads attempt to hand out coronaries to the Celtic Support from sheer panic as they allow teams to run directly at them. If lovelypants is still on the field with Bazza and Buffell and they start running (assuming of course Keano hasn't put all three in the stands), then it could be a nevry last ten/fifteen minutes for us all.

anyway, one more little moan, Petrov looked a little off the pace again and tbh, I honestly think he needs a rest, obviously not on sunday, because no matter what we have to go to Snake Mountain fully equipped in midfield. Also anyone know what WGS, the FOURTH Official and the peeler were moaning about?

    You're 4th in the SPL...

The famous five. Ah you lot and your diverse views.Whats in the least diverse about your views .Nowt.Its the same boring old anti-Strachan,anti-Telfer,anti-McManus,anti-Camara ; anti fannie and all. not one good word to say about anything Celtic.

Why do you bother then.? Were all of you at the game tonight, did all of you see it on TV(full game). There were over 340 comments on this blog so far and I know it really pains you lot to fess up but you guys were in the minority of about 5 in your views.

Doesn't that tell you something might just be wrong with your views. Are none of the others right, just even a little bit.? I agree that you are all entitled to your views 'diverse' as they are.....not! It is vey sad though to see some of you resort to personal attacks and childish immature insults on others of diverse views fron your own.

CQN offers an excellent platform for truly diverse views. When are you guys going to join in and offer something fresh and interesting. We've had the same old rants from you since August and its becoming very tiresome

That's it - I've had enough. I'm definately not renewing my season ticket for next year. I'm sick and tired of that money-grabber Peter Lawell fleecing us more and more each and every season.

First, the club stops giving you a free Euro tie included in your season book.

Then, they have the cheek to ask you to pay for a Pre-season Friendly!

And NOW? Now they expect you to pay full money and you only get ONE Old Firm game!
It's a bloody liberty. Sack the board! Rant over.

Thought the team played a lot better last night & dominated for 80 minutes. A midfield that includes Keane is a lot quicker.

    2 observations:

    1. Mark Wilson is not a full back

    2. Stan Petrov does not track opposition runs into our box & this puts pressure on the back 4

I'll probably get into trouble in some quarters for saying this but I'm pretty darned happy with how things have gone this midweek.

First Hertz drop points to Dundee United (and possibly implode off the pitch at the same time). Then Rangers get gubbed by Aber "we hate the Huns more than you do" deen and we go 10 clear by beating Falkirk.

I haven't seen the game yet but will watch it at lunchtime (C67 permitting) so thanks to all the guys for the updates last night.

Certainly sounds like we looked the part for the bulk of the game.

It's been sad to see all the "board apologist" / "not real fan" nonsense recently, here and elsewhere.

I know we don't look like world beaters at the moment - that's because we are not.

We are, however, starting to see some faint, green shoots of hope for the future. Young players coming in and helping to win meangingful games. A proper (mostly) keeper for the first time in my life. Class players like Magic, Naka & Keane strutting their stuff in the Hoops.

We've had a shocking defence most of the year. A lot of this is down to not having a settled back four. Communication and insticts improve with every game a back four plays together and we've had more combinations at the back than Kojo's had boldings. Hopefully we are starting to see this settle down - fewer changes will mean fewer goals.

Anyways, sorry for the long post but I just can't be as pessimistic as some so I thought I'd set out a few reasons.

Hail hail and Keep the Faith

Oh, and can anyone think of anything for me to tell all the Huns I know?

    H

Anybody else surprised how good Dion was in the first 60 mins? Always talking , received a few balls with his back to goal BBJ style but managed to avoid giving the ref an excuse to blow for a foul. Good backup methinks.

    Re Phone Ins

A few folks were getting a wee bit agrieved last night about comments made on Radio Clyde regarding Dublin's partnership with Zurawski.

Regardless of the fact or opinion
stated by the tabloid hack involved, which I happen to feel (based on same 90 mins) was very harsh anyway, the point is that it is clearly a blatant attempt to stir up business for his employers show tonight.

Clearly anyone with any knowledge of football would not feel confident to form such a concrete opinion after less than 90 minutes of seeing the 2 play together.

No moderately intelligent person would attempt to broadcast such a view based on limited experience, unless they had a motive......

It would not surprise me if this hack is supporting his nasaly challenged cohort on the phone in and is looking for the 'response' from the Celtic faithful.

I know it is tempting to be voyeuristic (not sure if that applies to radio) after another self destructing Rangers performance, but I would encourage all Celtic supporters to think twice before tuning the dial tonight.

They have an agenda, they have a strategy, all be it a transparent one.

I finally sobered up after drinking all the communion wine to find that we DID ACTUALLY WIN and THEY DID GET BEATEN BY THE SHEEP WORRIER'S!!!

Thank ghod those extra rosaries worked yesterday.. :o)

Anyway to last night. I thought Keane was the steadying influence that we've been crying out for, for such a long time!
Amazing how a player becomes world class when played in there proper position and along side the right people.

Also thought Dublin had a brilliant debut. When he wasn't hassling the Falkirk defence he was rallying the troops around him. I don't think the big guys mouth was shut all game.

Overall it was a good performance apart from most of the team turning into Corporal Jones in the closing minutes.

I think we can go to Mordor with a little optimism and if nothing else the result and performance has given WGS a few things to think about over the coming days.

    /Bishop B
