Celtic alone among European elite leagues, though still looking for sustainability

Celtic PLC (CCP: Alternative Investment Market) slipped to 16th place on the Deloitte Football Money League for season ending summer 2005, though they will inevitably drop off the list of top 20 clubs by revenue when figures for the current season are released.

Turnover at the club increased nine successive years to year ending June 2004 peaking at £69m, before slipping to £62m last season, which the Deloitte figures relate too.

Revenue is likely to slip further this season due to the lack of European income and an early exit in the Scottish Cup, though this will be offset by the additional £3m income from the Nike merchandising deal that came into effect in July 2005.

The release of the interim accounts, due 31 March 2006 will give a clear indication of what Celtic finances will look like by the time the summer transfer window opens in June.

On a positive note, Celtic are the only club outside the five richest leagues in Europe to get anywhere near this Money League. The strength of brand and income generated from supporters, positions the club well ahead of competitors from Netherlands, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, Scandanavia or Eastern Europe.

The task for the board is to turn this strength into sustained success on a par with peers such as Valencia and Porto, while ignoring persistent calls to spend beyond their means.

First-time poster - but surely not a podium finish?

An observation is that these figures don't tell the whole story. Whilst turnover is important, you also need to take into account the cost of securing these sales. The problem we have is that a greater proportion of our revenue comes from shirt sales etc. which have a cost attached to them rather than TV money which goes straight to the bottom-line.

The real issue is contribution (i.e. income less direct costs) as this tells us what we have to spend on things that really matter (like a left back)? To the best of my knowledge Deloitte's don't report on this?

When will Celtic's TV deal come up for renewal? Given the surge in interest in Asia and Eastern Europe, not to mention more traditional markets in the USA, Canada and Australia, I would imagine Celtic should benefit more from the sale of THEIR games.
After all, I would imagine the market in these countries for sales of Rangers and other SPL games would, by comparison, be minimal.
Anyone got an idea of how much we could stand to gain if we had control over sale of our games abroad?
And how much are we making at present from Channel67?

    Welcome Robert. Alas, no podium.

Totally correct about the importance of contribution over income, though such figures are not readily available.

Slap, it will also surprise you that the new French TV deal is the richest in the world, outperforming the English deal.

JohnBhoy, the chances of us getting our own TV rights within the SPL are low.

TBE, no one else picked this up. The anonymous comment happened because Blogger hung while posting a comment from barcabhoy.

Kirstymccabe, I don’t have debt figures handy for the rest. Rangers will turnover more than us this year, and should get into the list.

With the talent coming through the ranks we need to be in the financial position to buy 2-3 quality players a year. Summer transfer budget of £6-8m should be enough for this.

This puts a big onus on our youth development to maintain the standards coming through. The new facilities at Lennoxtown should help maintain the conveyeor belt of good homegrown players. Supplement with quality in the early to mid twenties age bracket and the odd sexy signing.

There should be no more need for boom and bust in our current position.

There's a fantastic article by Traynor in the record today on this subject, which illustrates the length's these hacks will go to in order to present Rangers in the best possible light. According to Traynor, Celtic are actually two place BEHIND Rangers in the "OVERALL" list, despite being the only Scottish team in the top twenty. Reminds me of the old "seasonally adjusted" unemployment figures the Tories used to trot out in the early 80's

afternoon all. funny that PSV arent in the top 20....they'v spent huge figures in the transfer market in recent years, are consistently in the later stages of the CL (well,in the last 3 years anyways) and surely cant be earning much more than us in their tv deal(there is only 3 big clubs, not including AZ) in Holland, than the Celts are. Anyone got any suggestions? granted they have sold RVN and Stam in recent years, but there is no reason why Celtic cant participate in the latter stages of the CL on a continuous basis if these guys are...

As you say platowasatim the one and only, probably severely blue nosed, George Davidson had a very special way of pronouncing the surnames of the Celtic players

    Lennoxxx...Wallllace....Gemmmmell..

Alastair "peach of a goal " Alexander was not that bad. I remember he used this expression for a Dalglish screamer in a midweek game down at somerset park, was it 7-3 to Celtic?

Do any of the other auld hauns like me remember the guys who reported back from the studios. Fraser Elder at Tannadice tried to inject some humour into his piece probably to compensate for the guy from Edinburgh, who was constantly depressed as he admitted the game had been rank rotten. Does anyone remember him? Was there a guy who regularly reported for Celtic matches from the Glasgow studio or was that left to Dougie Donnelly clone Brian Marjoribanks?

    Paul67,

Correct me it I'm wrong but I believe this is turnover only, so while the T/O is lower, so is our debt and our P&L was better (i.e. less loss) so we are in a healthier financial position than the previous year even though we dropped down the league?

Compare this with Rangers who now have debts larger than their T/O.

Interesting debate on the Today programme this morning a Telegraph Journo was trying to argue that Football clubs weren't proper businesses because Profit wasn't there only concern! They also said the Real Madrid and Man U 1<>2 was due to merchandising, specifically Beckham, in financial terms the transfer had been a mistake.

I think Celtic should be actively trying to sell the naming rights to the stadium, it is such a large possible income stream.

After all, its official called Celtic Park (with paradise as an alternative) and some people call it Parkhead(heed).

I suspect it would have to be VERY carefully managed though. I can hear the anti-board brigade already...selling out our history etc.

whilst looking at the newspaper comments on Kerrydale st someone mentioned that if r@ngers were sold there debt would only be 20m as the rest of the debt belongs to MIH and not them. Is this correct if not what is their actual debt? How much would someone have to pay to make them solvent?

Was just doing some tidying up and I came across The Herald's SPL Preview pull out from July 29 2005

Theres some good predictions for the season ahead in here, some of which I'll list below

    Celtic

    Prediction - 2nd

    The Manager
Following MON was always going to be difficult but doing so with a threadbare squadwill make Strachan's job even harder. The recuring theme in his trawl through the car boot sale section of the European transfer market is versatility, dictated by the need to make scant resources cover various fronts this season. How he adapts to life as an OF manager will also be interesting to observe, with his friendship with Alex McLeish likely to add an intriguing new dimension to the rivalry that divides the West of Scotland

    Speculation Players Out
    Fernandez (Cardiff)
    Maloney (Livi, Aberdeen)
    Balde (Bayern Munich)
    McManus (Livi)
    Petrov (Everton)
    Hartson (Blackburn Rovers)

    Sure Bet
If Strachan loses hid first old firm derby, expect all manner of girning from Celtic fans about how he should be sacked forthwith

    Rangers

    Prediction - 1st

    The Manager
After seemingly being only a penalty shoot-out against Maritimo away from being hounded out of Ibrox last September, McLeish has resurrected his reputation. The last gasp title win coupled with some shrewd movement in the transfer market has pacified the mob and may prove to be the foundation of even greater success.

    Sure bet
Jose KArl Pierre Fanfan will spend half the seasonfacing questions regardsing his similarity between Jean-Alain Boumsong before joining Middlesbrough for £5m in January

That last one made me laugh out loud

    Look at the figures again.

TV money = EPL has the biggest contract / highest annual payments.

France = PPV / satellite / highlights all in the one contract.
EPL = Split in two, add them together and the total is the largest in the EU / World.

Finances = Look at the cashflow, that is where the real picture is.

    2003/04 = T/O = £69mill = cashflow £2mill +ve, ie debt reduction.
    2004/05 = T/O = £62mill = cashflow £3.5mill -ve, ie debt increase.
2005/06 = T/O = £55-57mill = cashflow £2-4mill -ve / increase. Mmy best guess if you strip out the £15mill cash injection from the share issue.

The main issue here is not to lose the CL qualification bonus.
I hope this is a lesson that has been well learned.

Going back over the old Radio commentators,

BBC Scotland: Peter Thomson , cracking voice and great commentator.

George Davidson: took over form Thomson, again a unique voice but a bit school-teacherly in his manner.

David Francie: soooooooo Kelvinside, but always sustained the excitement and was instantly recognisable.Definitely a hun but in an acceptable manner.

To be honest, impartiality never really seemed to be much of an issue.Nobody seemed to care too much and I can't really recall any of the above getting over-excited when the huns scored or beat us.

Same with TV. Nobody accused Arthur Montford, Alec Cameron,Bob Crampsey( my history and form teacher at Holyrood - His readings of Para Handy on rainy days were classic!) or Ian Archer of bias or bigotry.

The BBC, Davidson,Erchie,Alistair Alexander et al were the same.

Did it all really begin with the young upstarts from STV and Clyde. Richard Park,Jim White, and cohorts. It sure seems like it to an 'aul hand' like me.

Hello all, first time poster, long time visitor of this great site.

Paul, you must be very proud of your site, congratulations.

I just had to contribute today as I have had yet another argument with a Celtic friend regarding Celtic and money!! It's one thing that really annoys me greatly when supporters demand that DD should just keep handing money over every year to support our quest to become the great Celtic that we know we can be.

I have had rows after rows in pubs trying explain that Celtic is in fact in debt.

"Sure every other week there are 60,000 tickets sold, and Celtic is in debt, no way!"

The latest "rich list" just makes this argument worse, "see, we are not in debt, we are one of the riches clubs in the world and we can not buy a left back!!!"

I think most of you probably know what I mean.

Therefore I will be directing all my Celtic friends and contacts to this site from now on, as there is always sound and sensible (well nearly always, sorry noel90) comments regarding all thing Celtic as a football team and Celtic as a business.

Be ready for a huge influx of confused blurry-eyed Tic fans!!

    Geebeethai,

I have tried on another thread to kill off the urban myth about Shearer being Anti-Celtic. At risk of repeating myself and boring others, here is the true state of play on Shearer.

"I don't normally give my personal credentials, but in the case of the Shearer Testimonial debate it may help to give Celtic fans the truth: I live on Tyneside, work closely with Newcastle United and know Alan Shearer well.

Can I first say that all the stuff I have read about Shearer being Anti-Celtic is absolute baloney and totally irresponsible.

It is inaccurate internet gossip that is snowballing into an urban myth and I fear could cause Celtic fans problems come May (Newcastle is a great party city, but there are still plenty of right-wing, Hun elements).

The perpetrators of the Testimonial trash such as Cybertims are publishing Anti-Shearer propaganda that has absolutely no basis in fact and it is being picked up by the more idiotic fringes of our support.

Would those responsible for this misinformation care to point to one sliver of evidence that Shearer is Anti-Celtic or Pro-Rangers.It simply doesn't exit.

I don't particularly like Shearer as a person- the Neil Lennon incident at Leicester was pretty nasty and clearly the dislike with Roy Keane is mutual- but these Anti-Celtic stories are pure fantasy.

Anyone who knows Shearer would be aware while obviously as a former England captain he isn't from a Celtic-minded background but he has always had a soft spot for Celtic.

I can personally confirm that he attended the 5-1 "Lubo" romp against Rangers in November 1998 along with Paul Dalglish (Celtic played on the Saturday and Newcastle were at Everton on the Monday) and afterwards he was a guest in the Celtic players lounge where he heartily joined in the post-match celebrations.

He has been a regular visitor to Parkhead ever since Kenny Dalglish was manager at St. James' Park and has even chartered a plane to fly up to Glasgow for matches.

Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd and Shearer have many times told me that Celtic fans are among the best in the world and that was again repeated in the Testimonial announcement from the Toon.

It has sweet FA to do with luring Celtic fans to Tyneside or exploiting them. We are only getting 3,000 tickets and all the proceeds are going to charity.

And does anyone think that Shearer or anyone else with a modicum of diplomacy or intelligence would pose for pix with either a Celtic or Rangers scarf on?

Shearer is a Geordie who has developed an interest in Scottish football, but I can guarantee he isn't a supporter of either club, although he does enjoy the big-game atmosphere at Celtic Park.

I'm not a fan of these Testimonials and if you don't agree with it then don't go...

But for the sake of Celtic and our fellow fans, please don't go to Newcastle and start singing "Shearer is a wanker," because of what a few idiots are posting...

You may get more than you bargained for."

Apologies to those who have already read it- but I believe it is important for Celtic fans travellingt to Newcastle in May to know the real facts:

Great stuff from the Herald....most of it made me laugh out loud !

    Thismancraig

It should be noted that Millenium at Cardiff withdraw from the market after getting no Sponsor offers near their £3m per year asking price.

It is even less likely that Celtic Park / Parkhead which have been called such for 100 years will get anywhere near that.

Worth remembering that there are limited incremental rights that Celtic can offer (prime hospitality at close to capacity and signage etc already sold to main partners Carling / Nike / T Mobile).

Naming rights would be a nice extra but certainly not much more more than a good gate from running a pre season tournament or the like.

    burnley78,

I wasn't aware of that - I'd have thought it was a good way to raise money. One question - how can Arsenal gain so much from Emirates? Presumably they have given up alot that we cannot?

Geebeethai, “Where is the money going?” was the question that got Celtic Quick News started.

‘Lots of places’ is the answer, but mostly on player wages. See this link to an old article I keep linked in the right hand margin, Where has all the money gone.

Welcome TuckerBhoy, and thank you for your kind words. Refer your friends to the article I mentioned to Geebeethai above.

Milennium Stadium is substanially less frequently used than say Celtic Park.

Would this have an effect on how much someone was willing to pay?

Emirates Stadium is a brand new stadium so it won't be known as anything but the Emirates Stadium.

I posted a quote from Man U the other day where they said they thought there was no value in naming rights to their stadium as it would always be known as Old Trafford.

  • At 16/02/06 15:10, Blogger thismancraig said…

I thought of that as well, but in terms of profile, I'd say that the Millennium holds the advantage (FA Cup, 6 Nations etc).

However this is limited as it has only 2 more cup finals to host for the FA.

    FrankieBhoy -

Good point on the stadium, Arsenal are also only a club and not a movement like us.

I thought the the Man Utd thing was an attempt to appease an already unhappy support?

Sorry I can't help, but I'd like to wish Frank all the very best for what will hopefully be a very happy day for him and all his family & friends. What is he up to these days?

He gave me some of the happiest moments as a celtic supporter, not least in the games mentioned. How and why he was punted after the '85 cup final at the tender age of 29 will remain a mystery to me.

  • At 16/02/06 15:25, Blogger FrankieBhoy said…

Arsenal enjoy a very high profile in London/UK/Europe compared to Celtic.

Getting your name (Emirates) linked with a brand new 60,000 seater stadium in London must be worth a fair bit.

Also I'd imagine the corporate hospitality facilities are superb so you'll be getting your brand across to the type of people you'd want to target.

Pity the team's on the decline and Henry's heading into the sunset !

I am appreciating the level of intelligent debate on Celtic Quick news after my first venture on to Cyber Tims.

It was in that wesbite that the urban myth about Alan Shearer being Anti-Celtic was first developed and in a simple, straightforward attempt to put Celtic fans using that space to be made aware of the truth I posted the same information as I did on CQN....

with dramtically different results and responses.

On CQN most posters were pleased and relieved to be made aware of Shearer's postion regarding Celtic, but on Cyber Tims there was a juvenile reaction that ranged from the predicatble Hun jibes and people defending their right to hate Shearer and even suggesting that I was somehow threatening Celtic fans.

Some even accused me of trying to tell them who they should like and shouldn't.

Having made it clear that I am not remotely a Shearer fan and know the real reasons why our support might not want to back his Testimonial (captainn of England, attempted decaptiation of Lennon, abuse of Keane etc) I couldn't follow the logic in that one.

I am just relieved that the good Bhoys and Ghirls of CQN seem to have taken the message on board.

Thanks Paul for a vibrant, intelligent site- we might not agree all the time, but the debate is adult, entertaining and enlightning.

SeanSouth - I've stopped posting anything to other celtic sites due to the torrents of abuse you offten get back. I know sometime the written word can come across wrongly, be misconstrued but there seems to be a lot less tolerance on some of these other sites. Perhaps younger groups on other sites than here?

    MuppetBhoy,

I am fast coming to the same conclusion as you about posting on other Celtic sites.

Cyber Tims seems to attract a very young irrational "yell them down" clientele, while I actually managed to get banned from Come on the Hoops last year for asking Celtic fans not to sing blatantly sectarian lyrics such as "soon there'll be no Proetstants at all."

That led to me being branded as a Hun by an not inconsiderable number of CTH posters and was not a pleasant experience.

My reason for also posting the Shearer clairification on CT was quite simply to make that board-which was the sources of the urban myth- aware of the truth.

But it seems that some Celtic fans would rather believe made -up nonsense and I am not talking tabloid here...

Sticking to CQN seems to be the safest course!

Thanks Sean South, I appreciate your kind words.

There are a lot of keyboard hard-men who I am sure use the Internet to compensate for a whole variety of things. I could get Freudian here, but better not.

‘When times were tough’ even the atmosphere on here sinks, but there is a core of contributors who understand how to maintain equilibrium and swing things back.

I have had many emails from people who have been genuinely upset at what has been said about them here, some people have even been put off their sleep. People handle abuse differently, but I would prefer that ‘abusers’ do not use Celtic Quick News to harangue other members of ‘the movement’.

On your comment yesterday and links with Newcastle (the city). Do you have a beard?

Thanks - most folk have to dig for rather than calculate my mental age....

I have also very briefly looked at other Celtic sites at one time or another but don't bother now. I must admit to getting upset when someone on CQN who I think contributes a lot (p8ddy being a good example) goes in a huff and doesn't post any more as I think this site needs all the varied contributors it gets. Another Alex Frae Govan has gone away and not returned and I am not sure why that was because he contributed a lot more than I do to the debate - AlabamaCelt is another.... selfishly I get a good laugh / good gen from these posters and miss them :-(

Talking to a friend at PTFC he was telling me before last night what a win meant to them financially - this article shows what getting into the CL means to us.

Not really with you, but think your saying:
2003/04 we made £2mill so debt reduction.
2004/05 we lost £3.5mill so debt increase
You predict; excluding the £15mill share issue for debt reduction and Lennoxtown
2005/06 we loose £2-4mill so debt increase and T/O further reduction (out of the top twenty)

BTW: Will we own Lennoxtown out right?

    FrankieBhoy,

If, Aeroplanes flying over you en route to the world’s busiest Airport helps also!!

Paul67- looks like your investigative skills are as sharply honed as ever.

Yes, I have had a beard for most of my adult life.

But shaved it off recently for the purposes of self-preservatory, disguise.

When Celtic come to Newcastle on May 11 why don't we have a CQN meet?

The best Celtic experience is to be had in the Tyneside Irish Centre- which is a couple of hundred yards behind the Gallowgate end at St. James' Park- where the Tyneside Number 1 CSC club have their HQ.

We have our very own Celtic band, The Bad Bhoys, and it is a 100 per cent "safe" venue in that it is a private members club that can accommodate around 500 drinkers.

I am a member and can organise to have any CQN bhoys or ghirls to be signed in for the day.

But we would have to be fairly quick in ascertaining numbers as a lot of CSCs will be trying to get booked in.
