Celtic turnover set to be close to Seville season

Celtic’s interim accounts indicate that year-end turnover will reach at least £58m. Remarkably, this is just £2m less than the turnover achieved during the 2002/3 season, when the club reached the Uefa Cup Final in Seville.

I also understand there are firm prospects of further deals that will close this gap this financial year.

Celtic had only one European game this season, and that was a ‘season book’ game, earning the club practically no gate money and very little television income. The ‘Seville season’ provided a further seven home gates, mostly with lucrative television income, not to mention the Final itself.

The last three years have seen a significant rise in non-match day income, as sponsorship deals with Carling, Nike, T-Mobile among others have reduced the exposure Celtic have to the vagaries of football results.

This is why investment in the football squad will be made in the summer, irrespective of our European prospects at the time.

Football results will always grab the headlines, but the progress in off-field operations has been remarkable in recent years, coincidently since Peter Lawwell became chief executive.

financially speaking this is a respectable set of results.....the board have invested quite heavily this year and still have managed to reduce costs....the second half this year should be better than the second half last year....mainly due to merchandising, extra home games in the spl and reduced payroll from last year.....

we are well set now to be highly profitable any time we qualify for the CL.........i would be prepared to make a little wager that Celtic's bottom line will end the year better than Rangers, even though they showed a first half profit of £6 million, however their costs have risen again this year and their income stream in the second half will be nowhere near the first half....

    in summary.....

we have improved the quality of the team , spent £6.5 million and reduced both debt and costs.....all without european and scottish cup income, and no lucrative pre-season tour.....

rangers have reduced the quality, spent only £1 million, and increased costs and probably debt as well.....all with the largest income they have ever had.....

next year we will have significant CL income, a lucrative pre-season tour, reduced debt and the opportunity to benefit from further cost savings on sutton, agathe, and whoever else leaves in june(varga, and possibly thommo).....i expect a level of spend at the same level as this year...i.e. £6.5 million for 3 additional players.......if we get a left back , a centre half and a striker of the same quality as wgs unearthed in boruc, majic and naka , i will be delighted...

the board are doing a very good job just now.......lets give them some credit

Hope you get to read this as its just about time for Paul to post a new article. Anyway, the Singapore CSC( Singtims) meets up at least once a month at Molly Malone's Irish Pub,Circular road, (Boat Quay) usually about 8.00pm

We occasionally have an extra meet-up at the Old Brown Shoe on Bukit Timah Road( next to Coronation Plaza) and a monthly golf outing in Malaysia or Indonesia..

We'd love to see you if you are ever in Singapore. you can call Molly's and they will likely give you my phone number.Failing that post on here and we can contact you and suggest a meeting place and time and date etc.

I'd really welcome that as its the Singtims ambition to work with the CSC's in OZ and Kiwi land to organise an Asia-Pacific CSC convention. I know all the CSC President's in Asia and some in OZ so I'm sure it could be done even if we gave ourselves a 2 year timetable to organise it.

We met with Brian Quinn here recently and hope to do so again soon and we mentioned this to him and he said he would do all he could to help us re support from Celtic FC, players and management etc.

I'm sure the NACSCF would also help us with ideas etc.

    Paul,
pleasantly surprised on the figures you've given.
i was expecting it to be the lowest turnover we've had for a good few years but it looks like we're getting it right off the field as well as on it.

it is important we continue to use all avenues as we all know we can't make it up with big tv deals from sky.

if we manage to get 6-7 million to spend in the summer as well as using the money from departing players we will be able to bolster our team fot the CL.

So if our turnover is going to be approximately the same and costs are being constantly lowered are we heading for a profitable season?

If this is the case I would be disappointed if we did not buy a decent left back and central midfielder in the summer..(as we will have at least £5m extra to play with next season- hopefully)

This is significant news. Congratulations should go to the PLC for making this happen. After the Sky tv deal breaking down a few years ago it was imperative that football clubs in general looked for extra income via other sources.

Celtic have achieved this and it looks likely they will continue to spend over the summer.

Downsizing in wages is taking place but with some value added to the player pool.

Is celtic at saturation point with these deals or is there more to come from the Asian market in the summer and beyond? let's hope so!

I enjoyed the fascinating chat earlier on about Celtic's historic non-sectarian signing policy. It moved me enough to check my library of Celtic books.
In his tome, Celtic: A History With Honour, Brian Wilson (now a director) points out that founding members of the club, such as John Glass, were more interested in politics, being members of the Home Government Branch of the Irish National League. This had been founded as a non-sectarian organisation in 1871 by John Ferguson - a Belfast protestant.
Apart from calling for Home Rule for Ireland, they also wanted an end to landlordism. In this, they found common ground with the crofters in the Scottish Highlands (mostly presbyterian). The Irish politician Michael Davitt was greeted warmly by this community in 1887 when he stressed their common "Keltic" heritage.
That year, the Glasgow Observer (forerunner of the Scottish Catholic Observer) carried a glowing report on his visit to Scotland with the headline "Davitt in the Highlands - the Tribune of the Celtic Race".
This was a matter of weeks before the fateful meeting was held in St Mary's Hall to form our club!
It is clear the choice of name was a political one. But the word was so unfamiliar to Glasgow Irish eyes that they initially mispronounced it (apparently, Wilson says, much to the annoyance of Brother Walfrid!) and that pronunciation has stuck to this day.
The Glory and the Dream, written by Tom Campbell and Pat Woods, stresses that the non-sectarian signing policy was evident from the club's earliest days. In fact, in 1895, a resolution that the club should only field a maximum of three protestants in any team was rejected. A counter-proposal that the club play as many non-Catholics as it wanted was passed.
In fact, the book states, one of the club's first goalkeepers was an Orangeman. Sadly, he was dropped after a "cavalier" performance on New Year's Day, 1892, in a friendly against Dumbarton which the Celts lost 8-0.
    The keeper's name? DUFF!
    You couldnae make it up!
    Here endeth the history lesson.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the tone off your latest article but I feel you are under estimating the importance of qualifying for the CL group stages.

You rightly praise the off-field operations but I don't think this progress would have been possible without the impact we made in Europe during the MoN years.

The majority of fans have got over the disappointment of missing out on Europe this season recognising it was a transitional season. I don't think they'd so understanding if we were to miss out again next season.

I doubt we can pull a Boruc, Naka, Magic, Keane, out of the hat every year to keep the fans satisfied with domestic only fare. Laughing at Rangers' domestic plight has helped as well - though maybe that will be an annual event.

I'd imagine we'd have to be in the CL group stages at least 2 out of every 3 season in order to maintain the progress we've seen since August 2000.

As you know Paul - I don't always agree with your analysis of those accounts.

I think the thing is that the results are boosted by the share issue, which has helped maintain matters following the European debacle.

The fact that the share issue was oversubscribed (we can discuss DD's role and positioning in all this another time) is yet again testiment to a remarkable support. In addition, the support's propensity to bolster the coffers through merchandising is an amazing asset.

Do I think the board deserve credit for the current financial stability? I think on reflection they deserve some credit. It is clearly important to manage well during a downturn in important revenue streams like TV.

However - as I have often repeated - where board's must be judged is in where they are going, what is there ambition and strategy. This remains unclear at Celtic. The gambles with lack of transfer activity which the board took led directly to the Atrmedia disaster (and indeed Black Sunday). The support have shown amazing patience following this and the recent Clyde setback (and in spite of DD's belief that we are the ungrateful and unwashed masses).

Spending another £7M next year will be another step forward. But it still all feels like the board are waiting for something else to happen............no prizes for guessing what!

So yes - some praise for the board for keeping a relatively stable hand on the tiller - but the people who really deserve the praise - well you need look no further that your fellow supporters.

    Totally off topic here.

In the early 70s I was given a book which I believe was called The Encyclopedia of British Football.

It contained the league placings for scottish and english leagues from the start and also all scottish and english cup results.

It also had all international Games and scores.

At the start of the book there was a series of articles including one about the scottish game that was titled (I think) And The Rest Came Nowhere.

Anyway to cut a short story long I am trying to confirm the name of the book to try and get a copy of it can anyone help?

Where are the numbers to support your estimate? the figure you provide is optimistic in my view but I would like to see the background.

    T/O = £58mill
    Debt = ?
    Football wages = ?
    P+L figure = ?
    Nike payment staging?
    Merchandising vs 2003/04 figures?
    Channel 67 / internet revenue?

    Any thoughts on this?

    Barca bhoy

You really are looking at the world through green tinted glasses. take out the share issue proceeds and the bank debt would be £23.3mill representing an increase of £3.8mill in 6 months. Therefore the interims are nothing to shout about, the failure of the board to handle the re-building / transition meant that we are £8mill CL money down and the share issue has been used in part to pay people's wages.

That is not the way to go about business. I blame BQ / DD in all of this. PL was only getting used to sitting at the big boys table when all of this was going on and can't be blamed for the debacle in the summer.

As I have posted before I can see debt increasing by £2mill over the second half as the lack of a TFOD cup game and a SC run work their way through the system.

Consequently 2006/07 will bring about a hard choice, pay for player investment or Lennoxtown but not both. Even this situation is dependent on CL qualification, second year of failure and the fire sale will be way of the future.

Consequently stop patting the board on the back and start asking the hard questions about DD / arbitrage / the club's future and the way the ordinary fan can help shape it.

    madmitch,

in what way did the board 'badly handle the re-building / transition'?

They had a manager in place in May and provided funds for him to invest in players. Subsequently we lost a football match thus missing out on the Champions League...that's the way the cookie crumbles I'm afraid!

Look at Rangers, little prospect of Champions League football next season - d'you think that was in (Mc) Bain's planning?

I commend and applaud BQ/PL and the Celtic Board and look forward to the future with them at the helm.

Madmitch, add turnover for the last six moths of last financial year to the first six months of this and you get £57m. You then need to add the extra income we know will come in from Nike (£1.5m more than Umbro for six month period).

You could also look at the pick-up in other discretionary income, which if it is maintained will boost the figures further than £58m. How are you come up with a figure less than this?

Good stuff to cheer up an otherwise non-football weekend

Others who I'm told are committed Celts include:

James McMillan - Composer (I don't think we need verification of that - he is a committed Celt through and through)

Michael Caton-Jones - Hollywood Director (committed Celtic fan and for me has always been a possible identity for the elusive FARGO - with all that Hollywood connection stuff)

Henry Kissinger I'm told was or indeed still is the Honourary President of the NACSF - but I'm not sure if that is actually true and if it is I'd love to here how one of the world's most recognisable politicians/statesmen ever got that position.

I'm assured Tommy Sheridan MSP was a Celtic season ticket holder for many years but took a back seat when the SSP started to take off.

Jim Kelly - Famous QB of the Buffalo Bills - apparently has been to CP a couple of times to watch us and met MON. I'm sure I read an article somewhere that MON was stunned to see him as he had been a big favourite of Martin's who follows American Football.

I'm sure there are others but need to go back and do some work and I'll go and look at the site you mentioned.

He also directed City by the sea and in one scene one of the lead Characters can be seen sitting on the subway with his CFC tammy (yes i am that sad that i noticed this) anyway he is a big shot in the entertainment industry (a bit like Andy Cameron).

With regards Mr Connery there was an old video released by Celtic (i think it may have been one of the first) about the Celtic History (i rented it at the library the same time as i bribed my sister to get me the exorcist) and if memeory serves me right Sean Connery is on talking about being a Celtic Fan and what it means to him (turncoat).

With regards Damien Duff he was on Soccer AM about a year or so ago in the question and answer section and he was asked:

    What do you know?
His reply: I know that Celtic are the best team in Scotland.

    Good man.

Pablophanque, Ziggy Marley can be added and what the hell, by family association his dad Bob.

    Mickey Rourke.
Frank Skinner (2nd team behind West Brom of course).
The Liverpool Irish - Rooney, Owen, Carragher, Gerrard (2nd team syndrome again).
    House of Pain.
    Stephen Tomkinson.
The manager of Wet Wet Wet.
    Roger of Villareal.

    Loads more, thinking caps guys.

Neg Anon, the over subsription versus DD increase %, I'm interested.

The board mis-handled the transition by reducing the funds available to the manager. The resources that were made available to WGS came from a re-cycling of the "Deadwood's" wages, no other money was involved.

    2003/04 Total football budget = £36.8mill
    Wages = £33.0mill+ / Player investment = £3.8mill
    2004/05 Total football budget = £33.9mill
    Wages = £31.0mill / Player investment = £2.9mill

Now for my best guess: 2005/06 Total football budget = £30-31mill.
Wages = £25mill + RK / Player investment = £5mill approx paid out this season.

No money for a real, established CB or fresh legs in the MF.

That is £6mill+ down in the space of 2 years, too much too soon.

Old team + new manager + quick start = Proper player investment, ie real money invested and not re-cycled wages. The summer was not the time to sweat the assets or thrift our way to success.

Therefore I contend that it was either a dereliction of duty on the part of the board or a fit of pique by DD after the boo-ing incident that led to this state of affairs.

    Consequently DD / BB - J'accuse!
Said in my best "San Moritz" pigeon French.

    Paul67 - fair point

However carry over 2004/05 is not guaranteed, no SC run and TFOD cup game. SLC final will help but it will not make up the difference.

    2004/05 T/O = £62mill
    CL failure = £(12mill)
    Nike bonus = £2mill+
    Merchandising = £5mill
    SC failure = £(2mill)
    Channel 67 / Naka uplift = £1-2mill = Interesting

    Total = £56-57mill / £5mill+ negative cashflow

Good news though on Ch67 / Internet / Naka / RK uplift.
However these positives are farting against thunder with regards to the CL debacle. As mentioned previously another CL failure and the doo-doo will really hit the fan.

Im with Madmitch on his take from last summer. It was negligence on the boards behalf. I´ve had this debate with Paul67. I think however its necessary to move on and hope that lessons were learned. DD has put up more cash (at a cost to the support-agreed) and maybe there has been some soul searching at board level and an therefore indirectly an acceptance of culpability but support also.

We all need to move on its a new era mistakes were made lets get back the dream that MON nearly touched back on track. Teh more people that buy into it and they dont need to naievely buy into it then the better for everyone involved with the club.

Its time for tha fans on match days at CP to match some of the work that is being done behind the scenes. I hope it returns after we capture the SPL within a few weeks.

    Have a nice weekend.

The debt is not under control, there will be a negative cashflow this year of £5-6mill. Only the "emergency" share issue is allowing the club to trade at the moment, no new money and the bank would have called in the club for a friendly chat.

That is the hidden agenda behind all the SP "journeyman" talk. The reason he didn't go was the poor valuations coming back from his previous suitors and the feared fan backlash if he went.

The need for Cl qualification is now imperative, no joy and the replacement for the Big4+1 and the Shaky 2 will be value not ability driven.

We really are at a crossroads now, one further mistake and the future will be SPL'tastic as this will be the best we can hope for. CL glory will really be dream on.

However a bit of good consistent commercial management, good scouting and some real conviction and we really could be on our way.

Three years too late but moving forward none the less.

I'll try and simplify my stance - in the summer we spent circa £7m. Whether that was from other savings or found underneath a seat at Celtic Park I do not know or care.

We lost 13 players from the first team squad (I'd have kept only 1 of them - Jackie McNamara). Evidently our old and new manager's agreed with that assesment.

Now our squad is (in general) younger, on more appropriate wages and on longer term contracts biaised in our favour.

Artmedia could have happened even if we had signed 4 new defenders of unrivalled quality in the summer. You asked for fresh legs in the midfield and a CB...we might still have lost even then.

So I disagree with your contention that we spent the summer 'sweating the assests and thrifting our way to success'.

As for Eddie Jordan, I think he’s a shareholder in the club.

Paul McGinley, correct. Celtic head covers and towel on bag.

Also, Sam Torrance, per interview in Bunkered magazine, big Celtic fan.

Bernard Gallagher a Hibee but rest of the family 'tic fans. Kirsty included although claimed neutrality when on Sky Sports!

Ian Poulter a Gooner but his caddy is 'tic man. Towel on his bag is half 'tic half gooner.

Bunkered did a review of golfers and these the most recognisable Celts among several more.

Monty a blue nose, Paul Lawrie a dandy don and Sandy Lyle no Scottish favourite.

    Paul,
Turnover at £58m quite possible. I was going to dispute with no Scottish cup run this 6 months compared to last year (which included a Gers game) but a CIS final will partly atone, and in comparison to the Seville season at least the £58m has a higher percentage coming from sponsorship and not from our pockets.

    Point well made.

I've seen this argument over the summer spending so many times. Those advocating that there was a lack of spending seem to work on the premise that more £££'s spent would have meant CL qualification.

Nothing in this life is that certain. If we had failed despite spending bigger I think Stan would have been sold without question,it was certainly suggested by Kojo at the time that he would/could be sold to pay down debt.

As it transpires the board have gone down a different route. The share issue has put us on a relatively even footing.Time to move on from here and forgive any past mistakes, but I hope the board don't forget them to ensure they aren't repeated in future.

Or are Celtic an exception to the rule? Maybe ask Alex Ferguson why he is shopping in bargain basement land and explain why Celtic should be any different!

Should we, as Paul always bangs his drum about, continue to spend more than we earn?

madmitch...there is more chance of rangers winning the cl than there was of the bank calling us in for a chat...that is just negativity for negativity's sake....

you are mistaking us for another football club in glasgow , who have had more than a few "not friendly" chats with the bank....

the board supported mon way beyond the point that was financially justifiable....that was a strategic necessity, as the support were desperate for success on the pitch and badly needed the feel good factor of being top of the tree in scotland and respected in europe....

the strategy worked....but given the climate we operate in it was not sustainable for ever....they have managed the trick of reducing costs and improving both the quality of player and the final product.....

the club is in good hands just now....i don't want a high risk strategy of massive spending, withvirtually no chance of a financial return.....if you talk to most rangers supporters who understand business , they are nervous as hell just now...they know murray is a flim flam artist...they know he has been reckless with their future because he is an ego maniac.....at least we have stability in our club....

the world is full of tyre kickers and back seat drivers....the only guys with all of the information are sitting on the plc board....they are managing the situation well......much rather them than the banana republic in govan
