Not convinced at all about the potential US market.

I am a regular visitor to the states, and believe that football is not, and in my opinion never will be, a part of their culture. Hard to imagine what is going to change things there when the 1994 World Cup had so little longterm impact.

Hope the rumours about tonight's team selection are wrong.

Maloney and Nakamura dropped? Shurely shome mistake.

    Ditto Dublin in for Hartson.

If true, a very big gamble by WGS. I hope he knows what he is doing because the criticism will be intense if this selection fails.

I would have to agree with you totally on this one. I'm living just north of the border right now and if it's Hockey Season NOTHING else matters. Outside that "Football" (read men running into each other) and Basketball are far too dominant for professional soccer to be taken seriously.

FOLLOWING allegations made on a Real Radio programme last month, the following statement was read out by presenter Ewen Cameron on Real Radio tonight.

"On the Real Football Phone-in programme broadcast by Real Radio on January 13th this year, I alleged that Peter Lawwell, in his role as chief executive of Celtic plc, and the board of Celtic plc had been untruthful to Celtic supporters and to the media in relation to player contracts.

"Real Radio and I acknowledge and accept that these allegations were completely without foundation, were unreasonable and ought not to have been broadcast. Real Radio and I wish to retract the allegations and to apologise unreservedly to both Mr Lawwell and the Celtic Board for the distress and damage caused by the broadcasting of the allegations."

Man I can't keep up with this new thread posting frenzy. Anyways, apologies for those who hung around on the previous but:

Someone referred to Kojo and p8ddy:
I don't know either of you, exept through your contributions. I share your passion for Celtic, and respect you for your opinions. BUT NO CYBERHANDBAGS PLEASE!

Quite frankly I have enjoyed the exchange between these fine gents more than much of the talk on this excellent bed of discussion in recent weeks.

I may not agree with p8ddys strong and currently unbending views on Strachan (even though I am sure he himself will be the first to say he hopes to be proved wrong) as much as I feel Kojo needs to realise that Petrov is the best candidate in our current squad to lead them out next year. But to read two articulate gents phase through styles and tactic as quickly as they leap on the smallest aspect of one anothers argument is a pleasure to read.

And bloody funny sometimes too, I'm not sure what was better the cutting "ass" joke itself, or the blatant deliberate attempt at a wind up that was the "gutter language" jibe in response to it.

Carry on fellas, there's plenty of others to guess formations every day.

    ReidyinToronto

    p.s.
I don't expect Lennon tonight, but whether Petrov is given a role shall be seen. Possibly Pearson in to give him a rest but surely a midfield of Shaun, Keane, Petrov and Naka must be the future. With Keane's added mobility and passing from deep we should see a return of the old stan we know and love, bursting a lung to both protect and support the artists on either side of him.

Thanks for the tip to the E-Tims article. I spend so much time on here these days I sometimes forget E-Tims.

Thought the article itself was a fair summation and reasoning of existing divisions though the writer I felt let the argument down by trotting out the tired theory of current success only being as a result of the opposition's manager being "woefully lacking in talent"

It would be as well for us all to remember that the man without talent somehow contrived to take two league titles as opposed to three won by MON but then he is of course extremely lucky. Lets hope WGS has just as much luck but with a little more of the backing unreservedly afforded to MON. I know that the wtiter poo-pooed the idea of Celtic -mindedness but I'm also very sure being both Irish and catholic did MON no harm in terms of ready acceptance.

I wouldn't be suprised if Dublin took Hartson's place - apparently he has been excellent in training and it gives BBJ a rest for Sunday.

Would have thought Telfer would be in at left back - he has plenty of experience and would be the more likely candidate to slot in I would have though - unless Wilson has played left back before?

  • At 08/02/06 19:09, Blogger Derbyshirebhoy said…

Delighted with the team selection. Look forward to a convincing display with SP being brought on for SP later to give SP a rest for Sunday!

So the rumours regarding Maloney and Nakamura being dropped are false. This team is closer to the one I expected, but still a brave decision which I dearly hopes works. Dropping Hartson for the unpopular (in most supporters' eyes) Dublin has considerable potential to backfire.

That team sheet would also allow a 3-5-2 formation if WGS was in a tinkering mood!

Moving Wallace to the right of midfield with Naka moving inside and a back 3 of Telfer Balde and MacManus.

Doubt he will do it but maybe if we are miles in front?

McGrain - normally enjoy your contributions.

I absolutely do see that, and NOTHING would give me more pleasure than it transpiring as an inspired team selection.

It is, however, a very brave decision, and I'm sure you'd agree that in the current climate if DD flops then Strachan will come under even more pressure. I am not one of his unreserved critics, far from it. I'm simply stating it's a brave team selection with limited margin for error if things don't work out. Let's turn this on its head. There were no Celtic fans I've come across suggesting that Hartson should be dropped for Dublin in the run up to tonight's game. As a consequence, if Dublin has a 'mare tonight, only one person will take the blame.

I admire his courage, and hope his judgement is as sound.

    malone19 response from Previous thread

As I said these questions are deceptive as they appear silly /simplistic at first glance. Are we only going to sell internet rights? Are we not going to bundle with other offerings? What is our Strategy, how will we market, what segments are we after, what is their buying behavior and socio-economic demographic, what is our insertion point (buy a highly recognizable Chinese player?) tours and other promos. Can Nike help?
Do I want to be in China? Yea…..I want to be every where else too?

Let’s not go off half cocked. Let’s understand how we plan to penetrate, how, and for what purpose. What will it take to support this, look at an analog and learn how they are attacking this (Barca). Barca are talking about creating a team to play in the MLS (US League) we need to think strategically about who we raise awareness to the Brand. AC Milan have a 30 min weekly program on what’s going on at the club. We need to be making those sorts of plays. Most of all we need to be a credible associate for the non affiliated soccer / football fan worldwide. The Scots / Irish link will get you some action in N. America, but how do you get Asians and others to empathize associate with us? That is the question ultimately….goes back to the insercion point question. How do I become visible in this market and what about me (CFC) makes the consumer (fan) want to be associated with me. What is our Brand cache? Sign Becks for pop culture cache, sign a Chinese player for national pride cache, sponsor orphanages for benevolence cache????? What makes us a sticky Brand??

It all starts with the little questions that are really starting points for a great big planning process. That is all I was getting at. I think we are saying roughly the same stuff, just different words to express it.

When Keane is in possession & there is a forward pass 'on' he gives it with lots of pace - it ups us a gear.

We seem to be slowly gaining the upper hand.

Balde just stepped into midfield & trod on the Falkirk player in possession - halting the break immediately. We have missed this. Boruc just did a little Australian Rules - ended up outside the box.

Celtic won't release their plans on how they will (if they will) attempt to enter new markets.

They (I would hope) would carry out this research and create a long term plan the same as any other business would when deciding on a foriegn market and segment within it.

Understood.. I just post questions and maybe if they have not been asked they can be carried to the right people and the question asked. If it is thought to be either stupid or irrelevant question then nothing lost. If it helps stimulate further refinement to our strategy or implementation plan….Beautiful.

Anyway on the discloser….I agree. I think we are on the same wavelength.
