Early treatment of Zurawski will destroy Celtic players

I think it would serve us well to look back through the archives and read some of the comments made on the merits of Maciej Zurawski.

His early form was hampered by the ankle injury he suffered in Bratislava, not to mention the upheaval of moving to a new club and country. Despite this he was derided as a flop, and not only by the media. Now he has had a chance to reach full fitness and settle into the country where his performances have been excellent.

Succeeding as a Celtic player is becoming increasingly difficult, as many seem prepared to write a player off after a single performance. Incredibly, some Celtic fans have taken to rubbishing a player before he has played for the club.

Left unchecked this will have predictable results. Players will fail if they do not get the support and encouragement they need to succeed, and we will inherit the future we deserve.

    posted earlier my last word........

    johnbhoy......re peter grant.
you said nothing to dispute my argument that grant was a very poor footballer and way way short of being celtic class.

the problem i have, apart from the fact that he was indicative of the mediocrity that led to 9 in a row for them, was, as ball_is _round spotted............

he was forgiven his deficiencies because he played to the lowest common denominator..........
blessing himself at ibrox after an own goal!!!!!! etc
he was a trully crap player but the ''buckie bhoys'' loved him.

why did the ''buckie bhoys'' love him?????? his artistic play?, his ability to score goals in important games?, his wonderful passing ability?, his skill with both feet?, his prowess over the dead ball?, no? what then?

nothing to do with religion?? no of course not, dont be silly, we only judge players by their ability on the football park dont we???????????????????

anyway just my opinion. ill say no more and im so sorry if all the ''buckie bhoys'' disagree.

paul, you are correct but you should have mentioned the treatment of manager!.

many fans agreeing too readily with a media , which by and large, want to see us fail.
their only means of doing this is to destabilise us with negative stories, which, more and more celtic fans are buying into.

dont let them set the agenda

zurawski is blossoming into the player we all hoped he would be.
he will finish the season as spl top scorer, easy. class. lets hope he continues for the next 3 or 4 years and gains legend status.
losing henrik still hurts a lot of us who witnessed a truly world class celtic player in the flesh, week in week out. going on recent form zurawski will go on and mend our broken hearts. we will always find another hero. away back when we let big jackie go i was devastated. (i know he was not everyones cup of tea). im glad its another pole taking up the mantle for some bizarre flashback moment.

Sorry for that but I decided to paste my previous post. I was one of last. But in my opinion implies the current subject.

Today the spurious Boruc's inteview has again repercussions througout Poland.
This is what Boruc said about that:
"Celtic players put it off with a smile. Things are worse with the supporters. One of the polish newspapers distorted my words.I think over sue them at law.Scotish journalist added something their, and the scandal is ready".
Here you have the answer how rubbish article brings the influence on our lives. But taking it all into the consideration. Keeper's answer is : Yes I'm worry about my relations with Celtic supporters". Doesn't it show that he loves you enough.
I think that Boruc's good play will shut this stupid discussion.
Can you help? Do your best and give him your support in the next game. I would like to hear it in the TV.
Also let me quote something about Zurawski and your old friend.
"Until Sunday a was the only Pole who shot four goals for Celtic in one game. But I'm not jealous of that. Who said so? Let me say that there is a lot in Poland about Zurawski's achievement.

    RE Zurawski,
I just checked what I'd written on the day he signed his three-year contract. I said:
As for Magic - have you all seen the videos yet? Phenomenal stuff. An extraordinarily cool finisher who has done it at the top level. OK, I'm sure the video of his misses won't be as good, but the guy is class. His record over the past two seasons with an average team in the Polish League (equivalent to the SPL) is a goal a game. I'll put a tenner on him bursting the 40 mark next season.

Didn't put on that tenner which, given his injury problems, is just as well. But he's definitely a goal-a-game striker. And then some.
I believe Paul's comments are more to do with a striker who will join the club in June. For what it's worth, I've already said that Kenny Miller's pace and courage will give us a fantastic option and he could form a superb partnership with Magic.

    Kirsty,
Insulting ex-players isn't enough for you, so now you have to start insulting the fans as well.
Stick to watching the weather reports.

Fair comment. We really are in danger of having a permanently negative mind set.

We sign a player on a Bosman, he's on a Bosman because he's rubbish. Rangers sign a player on a Bosman, it's a great piece of business.

the fact is Peter Grant was among the elite of the youths coming thro scottish football for his age - at a time when the scotland youth squads were not too bad - he never was a mcstay but neither was he a very poor footballer - it was only in his latter years when he played in not so good sides that his limitations were highlighted but imo he could esily have done a lambert/lennon type job geiven the tactics/team shape and team-mates.

my favourite grant moment was when just breaking into the celtic team he hammered John Holt of Dundee Utd - a hard player - in a 50/50 at tannadice AND WALKED AWAY WITH THE BALL.

the fact he appealed to the lowest common denominator should not be held against him. he was not a professor/composer/celebrity. he was what we would term an ordinary tim playing for celtic in scotland, having been brought up in the west of scotland.

and who are this lowest common denominator anyway ?

there are some uber-celts on other sites ? is that what is happening here ?

Agreed Paul some Celtic fans are too quick to write players off, usually fuelled by tabloid hysteria. Some are already writing off Kenny Miller before he kicks a ball.

Peter Grant - a midfield player who tackled, harried, pointed, shouted, didn't do the pretty things but the simple things, gave his all for the team - a player the R######rs fans hated. Sounds like another midfielder we currently have! Similiar to him he wasn't always loved by all the fans. No he wasn't the best footballer in the side but every team needs someone like him.

However i remember being at his testimonial and the queues outside were enormous - there were guys still coming in at half time! It was a cold miserable night but everyone had turned out to pay their respects to a guy who gave his all for the team. A large portion of the support obvious appreciated his values not just the 'buckie bhoys'.

Hermes - not a buckie bhoy!

I can't believe we are arguing about Peter Grant, nearly ten years after he left the club. Let's just say he was far from the most gifted individual to ever play for the club.

Like any other fan would, he always gave it everything he had and if you're not in the Grant camp, maybe we could start looking to the managers who picked him for nearly 15 years.

To point out his deficiencies as a player is not IMO slagging him off. As for the lowest common denominator, I think Peter was a bit of a Professional Tim, but who's to say any of us would have been any different if we had been given the opportunity to live the dream like he was?

Have to agree Paul on how certain players are treated by the crowd, but I don't think it's a new thing. Mark McGhee was a regular scapegoat up until he hit form in 87-88. Joe Miller also took abuse in the early 90's. Anyone in the hoops should always get 100% backing at all times.

Peter Grant made the simple things look incredibly difficult - Neil Lennon makes them look easy!

Not a fan of him on the pitch, a plastic hard man if ever there was one. Punched below his weight when it came to it, unlike someone like Jackie McNamara who consistently punched above his for the movement.

Great article and sentiments Paul, amazingly they were still talking about the 'enigma' that is Zurawksi on Clyde on Friday. Goal Machine, technically brilliant, wonderful movement, great name for chanting...what more do they want!

I dont want to sound like P8ddy here but as far as I am concerned there were certain players that proved they were consistent CL class performers for Celtic. Henrik, Thompson, Sutton, Lambert, Moravcik, Lenny

Agathe, Jackie Mac, Joos nearly there

Rab Douglas, Gray, and quite afew others were not good enough.

I do not believe that Hartson or Balde are quite good enough at that level and never will be.

Using a MON term for me that´s the yardstick.

Once Naka, Zurawski, Boruc etc are doing it for Celtic at that level then only then can we say that they are justifying their enormous salaries and can live off a reputation. Way to go yet as far as I am concerned.

excellent point. It really is the time to start backing the 11 that is on the pitch and the manager.

We can criticise all we want or debate the issues of the team outwith the stadium. But their are some fans who you would think are almost willing mistakes so they can start critising individuals.

Celtic TV recently showed 6-0 v Aberdeen in MONs first season. Five minutes to go cruising at 5-0 and the stadium is full with a rendition of The Fields. 5 minutes to go this season and all you here is the noise of the seats going up as everybody rushes off.

    Paul, you're right re: Magic.

I swear I am going to do some damage to the guys that sit near me in the North Stand one of these days. Every time this season Magic has failed to convert a hospital pass into a goal, they're on their feet, calling him a chicken, and expressing their disgust at him in language that would make a soldier blush. His "failure" is used as a launch pad for invective against the manager and the board.

Frankly, it's depressing. I know we are all supposed to be one happy Celtic family but increasingly I feel that I have nothing whatsoever in common with a large part of our support- in fact, many of them are the type of cretins I would cross the road to avoid.

    These supporters have:
    a. no knowledge of football
    b. a limited grasp of the English language
    c. no tolerance of anything less than Pele-esque excellence
    d. no sense of humour whatsoever.

Sorry for the rant but I can picture the scenes the first time Kenny Miller misses...

Excellent post paul - Having been a critic of the Strachan regime in the past, I am now getting a nice feel good factor.

One might ask the relevance of the above statement? Put simply, when things feel right, Celtic fans are less inclined to let their "Private Frazer" sides come out - which is what the media prey upon (and I use the word 'prey' quite deliberately). This is characterised more often than not such fans agreeing with negative assessments of new players by drunken nefarious hack wasters.

P.S. Is anyone else out there deeply disturbed by reports that Strathclyde's finest have "advised" Villareal fans not to wear Celtic colours tomorrow?

Isn't this pandering to the bigots that McConnell and his troupe of buffoons called "Scotland's Shame"? (a story reported widely in the Daily Record - Scotland's Real Shame!)

    Absolutely spot on Paul,
The spoiled supporters of the recent years have come to expect too much. We have been the dominant side in Scotland for 6 years now (albeit with 2 freaky slips – one we took our eye off the ball, the other we tried stumbling over the line). 7 years ago we would have been happy to be in Europe after xmas, we were hoping and praying for a new God to lead us into a new era – he duly arrived. What we are going through now is a transitional phase – these phases don’t normally bear fruit but we got it lucky because the west and east huns shot themselves in the foot. 2 out of 3 pieces of silverware is a damn good return for WGS and he should be applauded for it along with his players – he wont have the same team next year either and these new guys will need to be nurtured and blooded the same way this years new players were – lets hope these new players get an easier time of it from the spoiled brats though. I firmly believe that running out in front of 60,000 expectant fans is earth shattering and a run of 6 games on the trot should be telling enough if a player has it or not – one failed pass or a bad mistake doesn’t mean he wont cut it. (does it Henrik).

I totally agree Paul. There is a new breed of fan at Parkhead that expect players to perform well for 90 mins of every single game.

The treatment in particular of Alan Thompson sickens me. Whilst there's no doubting he's not the effective player that he used to be, there are many with short memories who forget the amount of assists he made for Larsson.

If we can imagine having to perform well in our own jobs under intense working conditions, we might have a better appreciation of what the players are up against every week.

I'm only guessing here, but i would imagine the culprits are fans who haven't lived through the Liam Brady/Jo Venglos/Lou Macari era's. Why some of our support still buy the nonsense that Keith Jackson & Co conjur up on the eve of every game we play baffles me.

    zbyzsek,
Well said as regards King Artur. His comments were a compliment to Legia fans, not an insult to Celtic's. And since he was surrounded by a thousand of them at the time, that is understandable!
The incredible bravery Boruc showed with his last-minute block at Ibrox when he was confronted by three Rangers players sums up why he is a first pick in the team.
He might lose the odd daft goal, but he keeps out plenty that other keepers would be able to let in without attracting an iota of criticism.
He is a brilliant keeper, and is committed to the club.
I'm sure he will be given a big welcome by the fans when he runs out at Celtic Park a week on Saturday.
As for the Pole who was delighted to see Magic score four...
I was there when Dariusz Dziekanowski scored HIS four against Partizan Belgrade. What a player!

    Morning all...

Good point on Zurawski...some people are still unfortunately led by the press on their viewpoints of players.....On that subject was it not Gordon Smith that said Zurawski wouldn't cut it in the SPL?

However, we should consider that the blog is a place where we can all raise our opinion both negative or positive- a virtual pub if you like.

Most of the opinions are based on what they have seen in the past (i.e. eye witness accounts or analysis of statistics etc etc) and therefore can just be as valid as other opinions...some come true (Mo Camara & Telfer for instance) and some don't..(Dion Dublin maybe.....although the CIS Cup final performance may determine this).

Football and this blog would be pretty dull if we all agreed and sometimes the debate adds to our own opinions or changes them...(Mark Wilson's movement at Ibrox for instance ;-)

    On a different subject...

we at www.sixtee7.com are disappointed to see that the Jimmy Johnstone just giving site has been closed down and are currently looking for a suitable alternative charity to contribute to?...Any ideas from the young or aul hands?

We have supporters making their minds up about players before they have donned the hoops, Virgo, Miller, Caldwell etc etc.

Dont forget he missed around 15 games due to injusry and is on course to finish top scorer in the country!

He has scored 14 goals in his last 13 games for us(counting the form he was hitting just before his injury for Poland).

He has now, perhaps unfairly, reached a stage where he is expected to score. How many times in the past did we say "Its gonnae be more, Larsson hasn't scored yet"? He was expected to score in every game and usually did. Magic has now failed to score in only 3 league games he has played since he got his first back in August!! If thats not talent I dont know what is...

Artur should howver threaten to sue and see if the papers which ran the story retract. It is still running here with an attack on Artur and the manager by the goalkeeping coach who was sacked at the start of the season. You just know the papers will dig around for any bitter comments to build on their lies. It is one of the reasons why sites like this are the future and the old media and the hacks who work there are doomed. The clock is ticking for Fat Jim, Leggat, Jackson, Keevins and the rest of that squalid horrid crew.

    Completely agree Paul.

Lots of comments recently about the sterile atmosphere at CP these days...to me it seems to be getting worse.

I think some people seem to forget that players are acutely aware of fans comments (even the one's who haven't played a game for us yet).

Confidence is a major part of any players game, and in that respect we as a support could be doing more to help.

GS farmed out a promising young left-back,when we desperately need one, rather than run the risk of ruining him in front of the home crowd at CP...thank god Aiden has come back stronger.

Think of all the last minute winners/equalisers over the years(at the new stadium too) when the fans were roaring the team on. We need to get back to that.

As for those who berate players who have yet to kick a ball...two words...Lubomir Moravcik.

Paul you have a unique site here but it is rapidly becoming a joke amoung celtic fans. and the reason is the arrogant , patronising and downright nasty way in which some of the posters on here talk about celtic fans.

kirstymcaceb-csc get a grip you should be asdhamed of yourself for some of these comments.

Peter grant was many things but he was a celtic man through and though.

    Hail Hail Paul67

Well said its about time we got back to our values and acted like CELTIC supporters. Magic will go on and become a legend, especially when he has players around him that can read his movements.

Kenny Miller will excel by playing with him and young Beattie also.

However Magic is not the only one getting the treatment. Adam Virgo has had next to no chance to adapt in the SPL and has already been written off. I hope he sticks it out and gets a proper chance to shine.

When you stand back and think about all the negativity you wonder:
Who else would you have bought with the resources GS had?
Where do you think Celtic should be at the moment?

How many people would have been happy with a 13 point lead and a Cup Final at the start of the season if you were promised it by late Feb?

We know we are still in progress but at least we are moving forward lets see what the summer brings in the window and how we fair in Europe next season.

    Evening Paul,fellow tims and Edward??

Good point Paul, but I feel this is not as new as everybody thinks.

    Return to Sutton,Lennon.

Lambert and even Larsson's signature was met by disagreement from a lot of people.

Roy Keane's signature was not wanted by at least a very large minority, and everybody had seen him perform for the last 12 years in the EPL.

"Celtic class" has come up in discussions recently with regard to two past players,Grant and Aitken.

All I would venture is that everybody seems to be Celtis class when they are playing superbly, and not when they are off form,or carrying an injury.

You have picked a good time with Zurawski to make your point, but a couple of bad games and the people you are talking about will be back trying to justify their original comments.

It is a sad day when we have to wait until a guy scores 4 goals for our team before being given the unequivocal backing of our so called supporters.

But as you are always saying.

    The wind blows.....

    Hail

    Good points Paul.

There is a distinction to be drawn between players who are going through a bad patch but have previously excelled or been good servants (Thommo, Balde) and those who are below the level that some supporters consider to be 'Celtic-class.

Both types of players deserve our support at all times but I can understand the exasperation of supporters who have seen players continually under-perform yet retain a place in the side - no specific examples, im sure everyone has their own thought.

What I cannot understand are the 'make the mind up before the player plays for Celtic' crew. Even if you have witnessed a player in another teams colours, it does not mean that they will not perform well for the Celts. Some players just need to play with better players to allow them to develop.

    kirstymccabe-csc
hate to labour the point, but Peter Grant was by far not the worst player to play for Celtic and held down a place in the 80s in some very good celtic teams (davie hay team, centenary team). constantly banging on that he was crap, "and you've said nothing to dispute my argument" will only persuade other bloggers not to read your comments, and i'm sure you have many cogent and relevant comments to make.

    cheers
    WB

Was in the centre stand on Sunday, courtesy of Taggsybhoy, and from there the formation and organisation of the team could be seen very clearly and was really pleasing. Really enjoyed it and not having been to many away games other than behind the goal I forgot that you see much, much more than you do on the telly. The wee pitch accentuates the formations too.

When we were in possession we went 3-4-3. If the ball was down the left Wilson moved into midfield and Telfer came across as 3rd defender. Telfer pushed on when it was down the right and Wilson came across the defence.

Petrov tended to become the 3rd striker almost every time, even further advanced than Maloney who continued to hover around midfield looking to take it on and find the killer pass.

Magic ran across the line of their defence for the entire 90 minutes, staying onside and pointing to where he wanted the pass. Absolutely brilliant to see, the guy is immense and workrate second to none.

Great stuff, and I could have sworn that when I looked across to the TV gantry when Dunfermline scored that Joke Broon punched the air......

JohnBhoy, I haven't seen the video of Magic's misses. What's so bad about her? Does she use the same hairdresser as Magic?!

Note that Magic's scoring rate (per game) is actually better than The Khing's, which is truly something!

And good ol' Henke is actually outscoring Samuel Eto'o this season when you consider goals scored against minutes played.

I wonder what the odds are for Henke to score the goal that knocks England out of the World Cup?

Afternoon all. Been off for a week or so so still catching up with everything.

Peter Grant gave his all for the Hoops when we were sorely lacking in other areas. In the Ibrox 4-4 (or was it 3-3?) game in 95-96 he was MOM. I remember watching him smash a 25+ yarder past Goram against the Hibs on Scotsport when I was very small.

The Bear was simply my favourite player as a kid. I had his number 4 printed on the shorts of my very first strip from Lumleys (there you go Evil). To say he wasn't Celtic class is laughable. Our Club captain who was good enough for Jock Stein and Billy McNeil.

Why are some people raking up the reputations of many or our old pros? I liked Anton, I liked watching Rico (Great haircut and facial hair as well) I remember my first team poster in '82 with Dom Sullivan (who some have had a go at on here). I don't remember that much about Big Roddy and Edvaaldsson (my teddy is named after him and I still have it) but I am aware that they gave their all and that my old man and his mates spoke highly of them when I was younger

I just do not get this recent attempts by some to rewrite our History and effectively slag the reputations of ex-players.

BTW tickets for the Cov game are on-sale for our end at the Cov website or by calling their ticket office. £12 adults £6 kids.

Dissappointed that big Mick hasn't been given a call up to the senior squad.

Do we think he's good enough for Scotland? Surely as good an option as Pressley, Caldwell etc.

Also surprised to see wee Burke hasn't been called up.

    Hi Paul,

Slightly off topic, but I feel CQN should help spearhead a campaign to increase the singing / atmosphere at Celtic Park.
    - if we can get the fans singing they've got less time for slagging.

    Here's the idea.

How about we draw up a Celtic Top 10 for the next home game v Aberdeen. Let CQN'ers pick their favourites.

    Anyway, for example:

    Walk on
    Fields
    Four Leaf Clover
    Willie Maley
    One Johnny Hartson
    etc

add a few old belters from yesteryears:

    Celtic, Celtic
    Grand old team
    Bring on the Hearts...

    etc, etc

Publish a match day Celtic Chart order of service - Prompts on the big screens?

    3:00 Walk on
    3:10 Fields
    3.:15 etc, etc,

I realise this is maybe a pretty formal way to encourage what should be spontaneous reaction but if it takes off and gets the Bhoys back singing again it might just pave the way forward to restoring a real Celtic community atmosphere to a buzzing Celtic Park.

Or maybe big Artur's right and we should keep picking our noses.....

Nothing against females or anything like that, but reading the comments of a certain 'Kirsty' on here has got me thinking its probably a bloke pretending to be a female. Has this come up before? It would be good if we did have some females on here to lighten up the tone of the place as wee bit, but a bloke kiddin on there a female - no thanks. Something creepy about that.

Clearly if I'm wrong I'll be back on here to aplogise.

just caught up on her posting.

kirsty - your a good laugh. You mix a serious point with a wee dig at a legend.

And so, can you substitute Peter Grant with anyone from the current team?

    I am sure you can.

Then i would be happy to enter your chit chat.

KIRSTYMCABE,the most accurate thing you said was about the 'buckie boys'.It is an anomoly of the Celtic support that those who have a penchant for the old monks nectar are also the most likely to be pollitically extreme and partial to saluting the "GENERAL"(General Grant aka Peter Grant).

Well said Paul, we need to support every player who wears the jersey for the 90 minutes of a game. We can all have opinions on the abilities or otherwise of the players but when they are on the field they should be given TOTAL support, if you can't do that then don't call yourself a supporter.

Italia Bhoy well said could not agree more

Well said Paul67, Italiabhoy, Bilbo et al.,

I'm a North Standee (upper) too. I've had to face down a few whipper snappers, who drag the atmosphere down, with their yap, yap, moans and put downs. Their comments, as mentioned by Italiabhoy, show up their ignorance of football. I explained in language they would understand that their company would be better appreciated in the away stands. I don't know if they saw any wisdom in my advice, but I don't see them much these days. Great. Having said that, the ambiance is at times, more or less exactly like the way Celtic Park wasn't. I would like to support Bilbo in his/her attempts at correcting the ever declining atmosphere in Celtic Park. I'm of the belief that every season sees off a few of the old guard whose season books are taken up by fans not yet up to speed on the songs. There are some beside me who don't even join in on "Walk on.." I'm suggesting that there may be an element of embarrassment at not knowing the words. As an added item to Bilbo's ideas, perhaps the words should be published in the programme. Fans might be more confident about joining in, if they know the words.

Why do some posters feel the need to come on here and badmouth ex- celts?,i just don't understand the thought process,Peter Grant was somewhat limited, yes,so what,we have had plenty of players of similar ability and i don't feel the compunction to come here and give them a hard time, the one thing you can't take away from him was his TOTAL commitment to Celtic,if all the more gifted players we have been blessed with had shown a similar endeavour,THEN perhaps we would have been able to stop Rangers from becoming the second side to achieve nine in a row, please think before posting this vitriol, this particular man is a diehard Celtic fan and deserves better.
