European report for next seasons Champions League

Panathinaikos (9 games left) now have only a three point gap to make up on AEK Athens to reach a Champions League spot.

Arsenal (11 games left) now look unlikely Champions League contenders for next season. They have slipped to seventh spot in England, five points behind Tottenham and a point behind Bolton Wanderers, who have two games in hand.

Deportivo and Villarreal (13 games left) have respectively a six and seven point gap to make up on Osasuna to claim the final spot in Spain.

For Celtic to enter the Champions League as 16th seed and gain direct access to Pot 2, no more than one of these clubs must qualify, and the winners of this year’s tournament must qualify from their domestic league.

Paul, I thought that the winners would have to qualify direct for the league - ie they need to finish in the top two (of the big countries for example). If that doesn't happen then effectively the winners become another automatic entrant to the league stagesths pushing us down a further place.

It's back, and it's bigger and better than before! This season Coca-Cola is
giving fans another chance to strengthen their club’s squad by winning a new
player worth £250,000, as well as netting £10,000 for themselves. But that’s
not all! Two further clubs, both from different leagues, will each win
    £50,000.

Taking part is simple! Enter once a day – either online at http://www.coca-colafootball.co.uk or by simply texting “CELTIC” to ‘88555’.

Don’t forget: the winners will be drawn at random from all entries received, so
the club with the most entries has the best chance of winning. All winners will
be announced live on Soccer AM on 29th April 2006.

Celtic is currently only 21st in the table (far better that 68th), so get those
votes in! Please pass this on to other Celtic-minded bhoys and ghirls.

Is Ajax still our biggest threat for an automatic place into group stage?

I have noticed that their form is starting to pick up. Also, their league is a playoff system. In effect they could finish 2nd irrespaective of their position before playoff.

PAUL: WOULD YOU STOP DOING THAT!

I just stuck a wee ps on my post in the last thread aboiut your starting a new one but you even pre-empted that...

    Re. Rangers "Cash Injection"

This wouldn't be a "cash injection" - it's selling assets and getting a license fee to keep them "Official Rangers Shops".

They say this only involves a form of securitisation...

Pure securisitsation wouldn't involve the sale of the shops, it would just be cash up-front on the future earnings of them...

Doesn't seem like a good deal to me (but I may be biased...) and as was rightly pointed out it would be selling off the family silver in that they get rid of assets for a short term cash injection - the shops can't be sold twice - and I wonder how much the shops made (in profit) on an annual basis - Rangers will LOSE this revenue stream... They must have been making more than the license fee - otherwise there would be no point in the investors taking them on, so this would have to impact on Rangers future earnings.

BTW: Securitisation is not intrinsically bad for a business - cash up-front to see through cash-flow probs or better utilising the balance sheet are two ways - if it was no-one would do it surely? - where Leeds plan went off the rails was the massive changes in revenue by not qualifying for Champs league - their subsequent fire-sale of players and the drop into the Championship and massive reduction in TV revenue. This messed up their entire revenue projections.

Securitisation takes into account previous revenue from a given source then tries to extrapolate that over time - now we all know that Scottish football revenues are pretty much at rock bottom re tv money etc, but as fans we (and they) still buy the shirts and the "leisure wear" on an annual basis, so I would think this is a fairly robust revenue stream - though if they start consistently being fourth in the SPL, this may change ;o)

Incidentally the probably the most famous securitisation was David Bowie's "Bowie Bonds" that securitised his future royalties for cash lump-payment - I guess on the basis he wouldn't benefit from the earnings when he was dead...

CL automatic qualification is all I'm after. Pot 2 would be a bonus, but knowing our luck we'll pip Ajax into pot 2 and draw them from pot 3!!

Of course the reverse could happen, Ajax get pot 2 and draw us from pot 3 so there are a million permutations between now and the draw to worry about, so I don't.

The other running thread, the sell off of the shops. I don't see it is all that bad a move, depending on what the deal is with on-line sales. If Rangers keep these rights then I think it's potentially a smart move. In 10 years the growth of online sales will be astronomical. It's cheaper, it's safer than ever and it's convenient, soon you'll be able to ddo it interactively with your TV remote. And put it this way, if Celtic did the same thing and you knew the club benefited from online sales and not from the stores where would you buy your stuff? I don't know the detail of the sale conditions but sorry guys, but if it was really all that bad a move they wouldn't be doing it, unless they truly are at desparation stage.......

If they are keeping on-line sales then it's a good deal no matter what we think.

However,if they release on-line sales they have no where else to turn, and Murray will be out of there as fast as he can get someone to pitch i.

Pot 2 for the CL draw would be a boost for the club but we have to get over some difficult hurdles before we can keep our part of the bargain. I don`t think that we can take anything for granted.
Thinking about this season`s CL, what if Arsenal win it?

Agree with your emphasis on the automatic CL qualification over Pot 2 vs Pot 3.

A bit of "Counting your chickens ..." going on here, although I think our luck must change. For the record I would fancy our chances in 4 out of the 8 CL ties now being played, a bit of momentum, 2 new players and a bit of confidence and we would be on our way.

Not the finished article but dangerous CL opponents all the same.

On the TFOD retail sell-off, to generate an up front payment and a royalty payment of £1.2millpa I think something more than 10 leased shops would have to be involved.

Consequently at the very least the internet / catalogue arm would have to be involved. the big question is how much of the "merchandising" operation is included, for the money being talked about is there anything else involved?

    1) Single sales channel - Official shops / JJB Sports outlets only for all TFOD strip sales?
    2) Takeover the strip manufacturing contracts?
    3) JJB do a "Nike" and the payment includes an element to take over the promotion of the strips?

As was discussed last night £30mill for what?
JJB don't do charity and DM is clutching at straws so what is involved?

    Consequently any ideas?

  • At 27/02/06 11:13, Blogger Weeron said…

    Folks,
I can't imagine that the JJB deal would leave that other club with the online sales. JJB would be crazy to buy the retail side, and still let the club be in direct competition with JJB.

JJB will make their money from 2 avenues. First, they'll run the shops better than the club could. It's their core business, and their buying power and merchandise range will be greater. In time, you'll see these shops sell more and more n0n-club stuff.

Secondly, the benefits to JJB will be in the long term. All else being equal, there will remain a hard core of fans, buying club stuff for a very long time into the future.

For the club, this will be money now, reduced income later. Even if they are very successful in using the up front money....it will all be gone in a few years. I suspect that murray will be too. This is a deal that gives the club only short term benefits.

    Paul67,

Thanks for the update, but keeping my strategy simple, Barca to win the Champions League – Football wins – Henrik wins and we automatically qualify.

    SELLING THE FAMILY SILVER!

What an education you get on this site; still think there is madness in his method but it could be the smart thing!

Living in England I see a few O/F tops in my travels, however the amount of Celtic tops seems pretty consistent where as the Rangers tops seem to be proportionate with the success of the team.

I.e. just after we won the two games in November I was talking to a fellow Tim who has family in North Lanarkshire, “It was great, driving through Larkhall and not a single Rangers top!” Although they have an undoubted hard core support, but some of their fans seem less loyal when the team aren’t doing well.

Season Tickets and merchandising must be hit with no Champions League and a ‘Generation of domination’ by us.

    SO MAYBE A LIFELINE

Using the funds from their current CL run and securitisation of a reducing revenue stream (less demand with more on-line sales) could help them ride out the trough and fund the necessary re-building plans.

BTW: In an interview after the Wigan match Dave Whelan stated that he just been to Barbados – any idea where the MINT was!

    Champions League

The only way we CAN'T make a seeded place is if the eventual winners do not qualify automatically from their country.

    Barcelona Yes
    Chelsea Yes
    Juventus Yes
Bremen Danger 2 points clear of 3rd place (lose to Juve?)
Milan Danger 2 points clear of 3rd place Inter (Bayern to win?)
Inter Danger 2 points behind 2nd place (Ajax to win?)
    Bayern Yes
    Liverpool Danger 2nd equal
Madrid Danger 2 points behind 2nd place (likley to lose to Arsenal?)
    Rankers No
    Villareal No
Benfica Danger 2 points behind 2nd place
    Arsenal No
    Lyon Yes
    PSV Yes
Ajax No (only 1 Dutch Qualifier so Dutch play off is irrelevant)

Of the 16 teams left in, there are 4 we definitely do NOT want to win it as they won't qualify next year.

There are only SIX teams we can really rely on to qualify.

That leaves SIX dodgy ones who may or may not qualify automatically.

Then it's co-efficient to decide whether we get a pot 2 or 3 placing.

    1 AC Milan
    2 Real Madrid
    3 FC Barcelona
    4 Liverpool
    5 Internazionale
    6 Juventus
    7 Manchester U
    8 Valencia
    9 FC Porto
    10 Ol Lyon
    11 PSV
    12 Bayern M
    13 Chelsea
    14 AS Roma
    15 Panathinaikos
    16 Celtic

Don't think we can do WORSE than 16th which = Pot 2 and this presupposes that ALL the above make it through qualification (if not an automatic). That doesn't usually happen.

The big danger here is AJAX who will have a better co-eff and MAY get a play=off slot via the Dutch League playoff system.

Panathanikos are currently 4 points off a place in Greece, so could drop out

Interested in what you right but can you see JJB managing to increase the profit level up to s figure that will support the supposed valuation, that is something in the region of £3mill?

I don't know what the shops / internet / catalogue make at the moment but it would appear to be a lot less than this figure.

Consequently how do JJB improve upon it and how do they handle the backlash on their existing stores?

You give some thoughts on this but I think there must be more to it than 10 leased shops.

10 sports shops: £15mill T/O - reasonable or "moonbeam" economics?
    £15mill T/O: £1.5mill profit - would this be a reasonable guess?
What is a reasonable T/O figure for a double front high street shop? S/hall St vs Paisley High Street?

Is there commercial arm bigger than the club's, apples to apples? Our merchandising figure might reach £15mill this year but that would include the £5mill NIKE royalty payment

In regards Celtic's likely seeding for the CL, here are some corrections to previous posts. The balance is very delicate, as between the combination of the UEFA ranking and the subsequent qualification from the various domestic leagues, Celtic currently reside in 15th place!

Clearly we can pencil in the big 3 from Spain, Italy and England already, with likely league winners Feyenoord, Lyon, Bayern, and Porto joining them - that is 13 places already!

One thing that has been resolved is that neither VFB Stuttgart or Monaco pose any further threat due to their exit from the UEFA Cup. Schalke has the opportunity to pass Celtic in the UEFA Team Ranking by scoring a further 3.4 points in the next round (a win and a draw I believe) - this is a significant risk as they have a relatively good tie against Palermo. If they overcome the 10th placed Serie A team, then they will still need to finish at least 3rd in the Bundesliga - they are currently 2pts away in 4th place! Also, Roma continue a fantastic run over the last 10weeks and although not a lock, do look good in the 4th place in Serie A.

Celtic's current seeding of 15th benefits from some very poor domestic form for several clubs above us in the ranking - most notably Newcastle and Parma. In addition Deportivo and Villareal are struggling to get into the top 4 of La Liga with some strong performances from lesser teams keeping them in 7th and 8th respectively. Ultimately, only one of these teams can push Celtic further down the list simply due to the maximum of 4 Spanish teams qualifying (unless there were an unlikely repeat of this year's Liverpool ruling). It's still early, but it looks as if neither may make the CL. In an even worse position is Ajax, as although in 4th place, only the top 2 qualify from the Eredivisie, and they are 15 points behind second place Feyenoord.

With Arsenal's standing worsening over the weekend, and their form remaining indifferent (we don't want them to win the CL!), the greatest threat to Celtic's "Pot 2" status, probably comes from Panathinaikos. They are now only 3 points away from the all important 2nd place in the Greek league.

As it stands today, we can afford only one of Schalke or Panathinaikos to qualify and still squeeze into 16th place. As mentioned earlier on the thread by dumbhoy there is no guarantee that all of these teams make the group stages. In addition to cheering for Celtic, it should be clear who to cheer against (apart from Rangers - obviously).

  • At 27/02/06 19:46, Blogger twists+turns said…

Schalke for me are now a serious threat. Paul, i take it that you are already assuming that Ajax, Newcastle and Parma are the teams that wont make it leaving either one of Villareal, Deportivo, Arsenal or Pana along with them?
