FIFA sell TV rights to mobile phone operator

Only four months from the start of the 2006 World Cup, FIFA have sold their first mobile phone broadcast rights to Swisscom Mobile AG for broadcast within Switzerland only.

The groundbreaking deal covers live broadcast, delayed streaming and highlights packages, as well as archive material from the 2002 World Cup.

Deals like this undermine the monopolistic hold TV broadcasters have in many territories, opening new avenues for rights holders, such as clubs and leagues, to reach their audience.

Although leagues hold TV rights in the UK, clubs hold Internet and mobile broadcast rights.

UK mobile operator Vodafone Group own 25% of Swisscom Mobile AG.

It's worth emphasising who let the rights here.....FIFA. The idea that FIFA, UEFA or national associations are going to sit idly by and let individual clubs do these deals is niaive in the extreme. This is merely the first example of how the stranglers will move into this arena and will defend their own interests to the detriment of the clubs.

The sickening thing about all this is that while Celtic (ultimately you and I) pay the wages of people like Naka, Boruc, Majic, the fat cats at FIFA, International Football Associations, mobile phone companies etc. make a fast and very profitable buck from all this.

Not knowing the results of the recent case brought by the Belgian club (supported by the G14) would Celtic receive anything if any of our players get injured at this World Cup.

    Ardoch,

Forgive my moronic meanderings, I'll try to explain it again!

If playing ability was the only measurement of becoming a Celtic Legend, then arguably Maurice Johnstone could be a candidate, KMD’s terse nature is almost as legendary as his football, he grates on many people, I liked his no nonsense approach but that’s my opinion.

I fail to see why you would have voted for him, you were too young to have a clear memory of him playing in the hoops and you have no personnal regard for him I for instance, would never vote for Di Canio despite his unquestionable talent, fascist salutes are not the signs of Celtic Legends

I don’t like to see Celtic greats ridiculed, none of us are perfect but if you are going to disparage a Celtic Legend something more constructive than "MORON" might be appropriate IMO

    Kenny was a god.

No denigration of someone who captained our side with such style and is one of , if not the only, player to have worn the hoops who would have walked into a world 11 at the time he was playing.
He dominated English football like no other player, and brought Liverpool to a level of dominance in Europe and at home that even the great Roy's Man Utd could not match.

He created one of the most attractive Liverpool teams in history. Barnes, Beardsley, Houghton et al. They would have been worthy European cup winners but for the ban.

He is the only winner of the Premiership outside of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelski.
Why did Shearer choose Blackburn over Man Utd - King Kenny.

His return to Celtic was a dampener but perhaps his footballing desire had been tempered by being at Heysel and Hillsborough.

The day he left for Liverpool I cried. It ended our hopes of being competitive in Europe.
But I take great pride that Kenny after he left proved himself down South as one of the greatest footballers in history and showed our English brethren his class.

I will forever be thankful for Kenny donning the hoops - just imagine if Sean Fallon had not persuaded that young man to join us - and not the blue of his original love.

There was a post on here not so long ago that said Shearer was a Rangers fan. The gist of it was that some Celtic fans met him at the airport and asked for a photo. One suggested he don a Celtic scarf and he refused saying he supported the other side of the city. Cant remember who posted.

Oh, and he kicked Lenny in the head on purpose.

I have spent many a happy hour in foreign climes feigning interest in a whole variety of electrical and telecommunications equipment in the hope that the eager salesman will demonstrate the thoroughness of its reception by finding 'Sportscene'through a blizzard of static.

I know the CQN discussion has also been about his post-playing career work, but no-one should be in any doubt that Kenny Dalglish was one of the best players in the world during his Celtic and Liverpool career.

Anyone with any doubts should watch the video that was produced of his career 15 or so years ago. Some of the football Kenny played was absolutely breath-taking. As you say tippbhoy, he dominated English football like no player since.

Was wondering aboiut the anti-Newcastle feeling myself - was at uni there back in the 80s - great town great people - see lots of Hoops shirts...

So Shearer kicked Lennie in the head when he was playing for Leicester Lennie never complained - maybe he didn't want to wear a scarf because then it would appear on a website/in the paper and there would be a bunch of questions about his allegiances? So what even if he does support Rangers - he is English after all etc etc.

How can we go on about the other side being small-minded if we're being arsey about rumours and hearsay? Personally I'd love to go back to the new St James's - will be a great atmosphere! Did they knock down the Strawberry when they did up the ground?

    Jocky Bhoy,

tend to agree with you mate. I was merely trying to answer an earlier question as to why their might be anti Shearer sentiments among the hoops support.

The comment about kicking Lenny in the head was supposed to be a humorous aside. I doubt Lenny holds any ill will. Roy Keane didnt have many nice words to say about him in his autobiography though. I wonder if he bears any ill will. After all, he's not the sort of guy to hold grudges is he???

toreheadt-I think Poland only has one place in the CL,and going by their co-efficient they would be in a different pot from ourselves.
The top 2 teams at present are Wicla Cracow and Legia Warsaw, but the League there is much tighter than the SPL,with only 2 points between the top 2 teams

A quick glance at the SPL shows that Celtic are 13 points clear of Hearts,19 points clear of Hibs, and 21 points clear of Rang#=/

RUMMIEBHOY Please don't examine Poland in every detail.

Here is what some of you were asking for:
    Forgive me my mistakes.
Will you be present at the Legia champion party at the end of this season?
A.B.I will be present at Legia-Wisla game in Warsaw, What after we will see. OK I will treat you with 1000 bottles of beer.
Will you be our No 1 in Germany?
A.B.I dream about a play in Germany. But only the coach decides about that.
It's rumoured you have provoked Rangers supporters by blessing yourself?
A.B I used to blessing myself always.I didn't see any act of provocation in that. This is my standard impulse.
Will you ever play for Rangers, or you feel yourself one of the Celts, as much as this is absolutely impossible?
A.B. Let me ask you the question. Could you be a Polonia Warsaw supporter(means a Rangers supporter to you bhoys)? No you can't. It's to late.
In which language do you curse during the game? I start always with english and finish with polish. They understand more and more.
What is your next club, and when it can happen?
A.B.I do not know what club. Barcelona, ManUtd- this I would dream out. But actually I'm not going to leave Celtic. I want to stay there and play in a CL.
What is this story with Arsenal? Were there any negotiations?
A.B.Yes there were the negotiations. There was a meeting with Wenger who said that I can play for Arsenal when my loan deal will be finished. But I knew: if I decide to move I will spend my Celtic time on the bench , there will be no chance to go to Germany. So, I decided to stay with Celts and not to move to Arsenal. There is still a lot of time. I'm just starting my adventure.
If it's only adventure what is your aim?
A.B.My end is to be happy. If I do what I like to do I will be happy, on the football field too.For sure money is not the most important thing in my life. Many things are more important than the money are.
What about your family? Are they OK in Scotland?
Not everything is finished yet. We will move in march to our own flat.

Not sure whether the issue is Prso singing?

I think the issue is whether the Scottish Medjia wish to pursue it as vigorously as the H+P Sauce phone scandal, whether the good non-Sectarian complainants from FF wish to mount the same outraged campaign and whether RFC will mount an internal investigation.

The main issue is still that the H+P was a non-club event, unknown and unsanctioned. This incident is on the team bus on official club business.

While the leagues hold the TV rights I am interested to know WHY the clubs hold internet and mobile rights?

Were the leagues just slow off the mark to regulate here and it passed them by? Not many visionaries in the halls of power, then. That would be a surprise.

I imagine it is now beyond their ability to reel in these rights with inevitable legal challenges.

As for the Shearer testimonial I agree with Jocky Bhoy to some extent but having been to Peter Beardsley's testimonial I can assure you a warm welcome is NOT extended by all in the Toon and a mate of mine was jumped and took a terrible doing just for having the hoops on. Throughout the day there were plenty of guys willing to share the craic but also a sizeable number who made you feel you'd inadvertently walked into the Govan stand. So just be careful folks if you're going.

The above link seems to be where the Shearer debate started this week.

Paul did say on a previous thread that he knew nothing about this testimonial being part of the Bellamy deal as the above article claims.

I tend to go along with that as I do not see the need for Shearer to force anyone into playing his testimonial. He could probably pick a Conference side and sell it out such is his standing on Tyneside.

But he picked Celtic and it would not appear to be financially motivated as all proceeds are going to charity.

Unless somebody can come up with hard evidence of him being pro-rangers or anti-Celtic, I say good luck to him.

    guys,
shearer is a confirmed bluenose. he was a guest of Kenny's at old firm games. the big beef however is the fact that when he was spotted at the game the rumour mill's went into overdrive about him joining the hoops. he quickly rubbished these suggestions in his usual smarmy way. he claimed he'd never come to celtic as it would be a step down for him and he was a rangers fan. he practically laughed at celtic that's why we called him a wanker in 'you are my larsson'. i am disappointed by this development not because we're doing a testimonial but because we are pandering to a guy who is a confirmed bluenose, hates keane and got away with standing on lenny's head. we all know why he didn't ask rangers to do the testimonial don't we. i'm sure the city of newcastle would love 10 or 20 thousand rangers fans on their streets for a couple of days!
personally i'd love to go to the game and sing 'you are my larsson' throughout the entire 90 minutes

The whole thing takes on a life of it's own and next thing you're getting a kicking in the Bigg Market or their Gallowgate because of something someone's written from the privacy and safety of their own boudoir...
