From previous thread.
NBNC, you are not quite right with your figures, but the bottom line is that Rangers sold 50% of their media rights for £15m and bought them back from £1.
What we do not know is any contingency clauses attached to the buy back. For example, I would expect BLT will get a cut of future revenues.
Difficult to answer your question without all the info.
-
Still a long way to go in these leagues though.
What's the story on the CL winners qualification after last season's nonsense with L'pool?
What happens if Arsenal win the CL (not likely) and finish 5 in the EPL?
-
Duncano - Still a little bit to go in our league.I just don't want to be counting those chickens
Paul67- Was there not talk of NTL still pursuing R*ngers for repayment of a loan?
I may be wrong, but I thought we had also been offered a loan by NTL when they were our sponsor but Celtic refused.
The Mint snapped their hands off for the money and then tried to wriggle out of repaying it when NTL were in trouble a couple of years ago.
It may have been resolved and I just missed it
-
Rammiebhoy, yes Rangers still have an active loan from NTL, initial capital amount was £15m.
Duncano, if Arsenal, Rangers, Villarreal or Ajax with the CL we would need to finish 15th seed.
Suspect not though. There is also not that long to go in these leagues.
-
Paul67: Is there any truth in Tom Hunter and Philip Green buying Murray out? I know it was talked about at end of last week on here but been away and not had chance to catch up on all the threads.
-
Re. the Champions League I'm more concerned with the SPL winners going straight into the group stages.
Anyone know how the chances of that happening are looking ?
-
Paul67
If they still have a loan of £15 million, I would be surprised if repayment wasn't in some way linked to broadcasting or streaming rights.
If they were to join together with another provider, I would have expected NTL to have a clause that demands for full repayment.
I know that others, like Aston Villa benefited from NTL's generosity but I was sur ethat was in return for shares.
Assuming that they did not receive shares, I would expect early repayment of the loan to kick in.
There again, I am talking about NTL and business sense, being linked !!
-
-
Paul,
Here's hoping results go our way (apart from maybe Villareal this weekend). Would be great to be seeded. Let's win the league first.I have too many painful memories of not doing so.
I really enjoyed the programme last night on our winning the league in '86. I have still to identify my mates and myself going mad behind the Celtic goal at Love Street when Albert Kidd scored. I think that was the best ever. I still can't find it in me to feel sorry for the Hearts fans who were suffering then. I do know how they feel, as does everyone who supports Celtic. If memeory serves me, we were the only ones playing entertaining football that season. Hearts played that 90 mile an hour stuff which blighted Scottish football for years as everybody tried to copy them. It made up in effort for what was lacking in skill. Thank God, the good guys won, if only temporarily.
Oh, thanks to Lubo for the link to Willie Maley. Brilliant.
-
Minx, I would doubt Philip Green. Murray said that Tom Hunter would be putting money in back in 2001 that never materialised. I expect he is back onto him, but clearly Hunter has passed up several chances to invest.
Frankiebhoy, SPL winners will go straight in as long as the winners of this years CL qualifies from their domestic league.
-
I may be reading too much into this but there is an article in the Herald today by one of David Murray's favourite poodles, Darryl Broadfoot, extolling the managerial talents of Billy Davies.
Hmmmmm I wonder..........
-
Last post on the previous thread, by a mere 3 minutes!
3-0 tomorrow.
-
the £15 million uplift in the NTL shares repurchased by Rangers is interesting...buy for £1 immediately revalue at £15 million...Murray then goes on to talk about bringing another £15 million into the club on top of the £57 million he targetted and failed miserably to achieve......
£15 million is a number that may loom large in weeks to come....
my take on the speculation ref t-mobile.....anything of that nature that is offered to Rangers, would also be on offer to Celtic.....if it is a good deal we would take it...if it's not then we would knock it back , as we have done with the internet rights deal from NTL......
basically...Celtic have the greater appeal, because of a hugely larger world wide support base ( a statement made by former rangers director hugh adams).....so any new revenue streams, whether sponsorship, naming rights,3G broadcasting are all available to us .....and we should be able to better any deal the do given the larger target audience and by far the stronger brand name....

: Growing Threat to Rangers management as Bird Flu arrives in France
Rangers were last night thrown into dissaray once more as the threat of bird flu came a step closer to britain after a dead duck was found to have the disease.
The dead duck was at first mistaken for a penguin, but this was a misinterpretation of report of a Monsieur P Le Guen who had stated that he would have to be sick as a parrot to take the Ibrox job!
I sincerely apologise for the above and am now heading out for a livener or possibly even a life!

As far as i know Celtic go straight into the group stages if the eventual winner of this year's CL is in an automatic qualifying spot in their respective country. The reason is because EUFA created an extra qualifying position because of what happened with Liverpool last year. Thanks to the MON era and Celtic's exploits we are currently one spot outside of auto qualifying. The extra qualifying position EUFA have created effectively puts the Scottish representatives into an automatic position. So we need to cheer on all the teams who are doing well in their own leagues!!

I have heard that Davies has bought a house in a Thorntonhall. Although it was put to me that he would be going to Rangers in a development role, not manager ... being groomed for the future???

-
Paul - you know I'm a huge fan, but this is at least the second time you have posted inaccurate information about next season's Champions League qualification.
For Celtic (if we do go on and win the league) to qualify automatically for the group stages, we need this season's Champions League winners to qualify for the group stages automatically through their domestic league position. This means that if the team who finish 3rd or 4th in their domestic leasgue (and this could be Real Madrid, Liverpool or AC Milan) win the Champions League, we will have to play a qualifying round. Pot 2 prospects seem far less important in comparison.

Interesting response in yesterday's Grauniad to the Top 20 "rich list" published by Deloitte:
The Guardian
Friday February 17 2006
GAME THEORY
What is it about football that makes people abandon financial yardsticks?
Deloitte, the accountancy firm, won itself lots of headlines yesterday with its annual "football money league", which showed Real Madrid overtaking Manchester United but you don't need a GCSE in business studies to spot the hole in the analysis: it measures revenues, not profits. Thus the fact Chelsea, at number five, made a loss of £140m goes unmentioned by Deloitte. Roman Abramovich, the sugar daddy who makes it possible, doesn't even get a name check.
As justification, the authors say it is better to start with more revenue than less. Well yes, but let us hope that Deloitte is advising clients in more sober industries that it's what you do with the cash that counts in the end.

A couple a' things didn't know you did GCSEs in Scotland - when did that start? Secondly I've been helping my bhoy with GCSE business studies (apparently it is a couple of NVQ's that's equivalent to 4 GCSE's) it ain’t that easy – or is that just me!

Bryce Curdy
Of course you are correct in pointing out the possibility of not winning the league and not qualifying through the 3 you mention winning CL and falling down domestically. This change in rule is another example of UEFA pandering to the big nations.
It could be argued that a Madrid or Liverpool or Milan would risk easing up and coming 3rd domestically in order to focus on a potential champs league final. This is perhaps more likely in England or Spain where Man U and Valencia will have nothing to distract them in the next few weeks.
With a 3rd or 4th place in their domestic leagues either of the three would still be seeded and pretty sure to get through to Group stage of CL the following year.
Still it is good to look forward to the possibilities and Pool 2 would of course be achieved with the scenarios outlined by Paul IF Celtic do qualify....
-
Bryce Curdy,
I was also under the impression this was the case, if so we are far from guaranteed a place in the group stages as the champions league seems wide open this year (apart from 1 team who somehow sneaked through!)
Hopefully barca will win, giving us direct entry and a certain Mr Larsson a wee medal to take home.

Team news from R#####rs v Hibs game. Chic Young has revealed on BBC Scotland that Hibs have AMANDA Conte on the bench. They must be taking it really easy if they have a girl on the bench - though as they appear to have the them in their back pocket this season they could proably paly 11 girls and still beat them!!

Just watched Liverpool defeat Man U in the F.A. cup for the first time in 85 years !!!!
Some musings............ I thought Man U were rank, I was also very impressed with the vocal support of the team for the full 90 minutes, outstanding.
I also noticed that almost all of the Kop end stood for the full 90 !!! I am definately of the opinion that sitting has had the most significant impact on the atmosphere at CP.
Is there any Bob Crampseys out there? A couple of questions. Has football always had a referee, and has he always used a whistle ???????
Just wondered.
And another thing............! The Liverpool support were singing The Fields of Athenry, but using different words !!!!!!!!!! Any ideas?

We had Heighway on the wing

All round the Fields of Anfield Road

For all.................
Tony’s Letter:
Glasgow Celtic was a Club that I did not know a lot about when I was told that Liam Brady had been in touch with Middlesbrough about acquiring my services in 1991. I knew that they were a big Club with an illustrious history; the first British team to win the European Cup, and to achieve the amazing feat of winning nine championships in a row.
When I was an apprentice professional footballer at Middlesbrough in the 1980, my youth team coach would eulogise about Celtic and the great players who had played for the Club. The coach in question was indeed one of the very best ex -Celts; his name Bobby Murdoch.
By the time I left Celtic on 1995, the Club and more importantly the supporters, had left an indelible mark in my heart, which will never leave me.
I feel honoured to have played in "the hoops" and to have given my all for the Club at very difficult period in the Clubs history. It was a volatile time in the East end of Glasgow what with the "sack the board" campaign and the domination of the field of the team from across the city. It was a time of change at Celtic, but what stood firm throughout all of my time at the Club was the belief the supporters had that good times were just around the corner and that the Celts would be "singing in the sun" before too long.
Their support of the team on the field was total and the players strived to reward the fans with performances that made you feel as if you were part of a huge family unit - and that feeling of being as one with the supporters could not of been highlighted more than when I was to lose my wife to cancer on new years day 1995. At a time when my life was decimated, and I was as low as any human being can get, the love and warmth I will never forget. Words of support poured in from Celtic folk, from all over the world and at a time when my life was empty, they helped fill that void with their compassion.
So as I said earlier, Celtic will always be 'my club' and I feel very humble that I played alongside such great Celts as McStay, Nicholas. Collins, Grant, Bonner and many more, but most importantly that I know whenever I pulled on the Jersey, I gave my all because I knew what it meant to the supporter on the terraces, to be proud to be a Celt.
Take care and God Bless,
Tony Mowbray Hail, Hail FIRST TEAM COACH [Ipswich Town]
And IMHO............. His greatest legacy ????????????? He gave us the huddle don't you know !

Pablophanque,
Even in spirit,I would discount him. I found him a constant embarrassment. His comments often verged on the bigotry we so despise.
He lacked Celtic class,in every sense. He appealed to simple, emotional minds. And he was a very poor player who would pull out of 50/50 challenges and then look around to see who he could 'finger' for the blame.
Those who know him, I don't, say he's a lovely guy. I'll accept that, but would only say - he should have known better then !
-
That's a beautiful letter from Tony. It always makes me feel very warm when you hear from old players singing praise to the club. It makes me especially happy when it's someone who wasn't brought up amongst the Celtic family.
Players like Kenny Dal, Charlie Nic find it hard to say anything nice to say about the club yet you have a man like Mowbray who was a stranger to Celtic but was welcomed with all our hearts.
I always thought Mowbray was a cracking player and I feel honoured to have been able to watch him. i also think he's destined to become a cracking manager and if he improves well enough i would be happy to see him manage us one day.
....
p.s charlie mulgrew has scored 2 cracking free kicks today apparently. So what's that now? naka, Maloney, McGeady, Mulgrew, Petrov, Zurawski who can all hit free kicks? Fabulous.
-
Bhoy Sean
You have ommitted a very worthy contender, from your list of excellent dead ball artisans.
Thommo, he of the wondrous left foot.
-
Indeed shame on me. The problem with Thommo is that he is very inconsistant with his free kick when shooting. He will hit a good strike one in every ten. But when it comes to crossing from free kicks then Thommo only has Naka as a rival.
-
Paul,
nice to see some of the CQN chat turn to issues not covered elsewhere.
As you might have guessed, I am firmly in the camp of sensible, sustainable management of the Club.
However, IF we get direct qualification AND get into Pot 2.....I would argue that this, more than any other time, would be the time to push the boat out.
This season's euro disaster will start to seriously undermine our club coefficient....and this will last for 5? years. In addition, good annual coefficient points will start to disappear off our calculation.
So, mathematically, things are going to take a downward route pretty soon. This may be our one and only chance to benefit from the double bonus....guaranteed qualification to the group stages....and Pot 2 seeding.
The guaranteed group qualification will help the club plan in the summer, as there will be some certainty re next year's income. It will also help in attracting players.
The Pot 2 spot will give us the opportunity to make a real tilt at the last 16. We need to get there, as we need to get coefficient points (as well as money).
As I have said before, we have not been 'punching above our weight' in Europe. We have been underperforming. All but 15 clubs in Europe would love to have our revenues....and many of them would do a better job of spending those revenues.
So, if it comes to pass that we get that Pot 2 spot, I really hope that we have the guts to get the 2 or 3 quality players needed to make it count.
The next 5 years would be significantly affected.
-
actually speaking of free kicks.
How many have we scored this year direct from a free kick?
I'd hazzard a guess that we've scored more already this year compared to recent seasons since Lubo left.
-
Bhoy Sean
Good question.
I, personally, have not the foggiest.
This is a tailor made poser, for the well-informed Johnbhoy.
-
Watching the Bolton v West Ham game and 2 cracking left backs on show today. Conchesky for the Hammers, great tackler and what a crosser of a ball.No slouch either and uses the ball well.
Bolton's left back and MOTM for me so far is Ricardo Gardner. Pace to burn, skilful, terrific left foot and user of the ball and looks pretty useful defensively. Apparently he was MOTM against Arsenal last week.Didn't he play for Hearts a couple of seasons ago.West Indian lad, also plays for T&T I think.
Either of them would do for us at left back on what I've seen so far.
-
Weeron,
You are correct.
We have very definitely been "punching below our weight", as you succinctly have put it.
The problem is,as I see it, we are always in horrendous form, when we are away from home.
As you know, we are practically unbeatable, at Fortress Parkhead.
However,in away games, good results are very few.
Something is missing from the equation.
The disappointment in Bratislava, was not unexpected, if one remembered that away games in Europe, are just not "our cup of tea."
Maybe there is not enough thought being given to the length of time, that Celtic should spend in the foreign environment, before the actual game day.
That is a thought that should be investigated, by the Celtic Management.
Away game performance is a very serious chink in the Celtic challenge for Euro glory.
Something must be done to correct this failing.
Otherwise,we could be in for further Euro disappointments, I am afraid.

Timoot,
I recently seen an interview with the lad konchesky and he is west ham through an through so he'd probably be hard to get, as well as the fact with the ridiculous overpricing down there, they would probably value him at about 10 million as he's played for England! Never heard of the other guy.
weeron,
i would be very surprised if we sign the 3 or so big name stars we would all like to see if Strachans recent comments about spending are anything to go by.
-
amadillo you are right about our home-away performances in Europe. Strange thing happening in the SPL this year where our home and away records are the same in terms of wins, draws losses. And on the road we have scored 2 goals more and let one more in than at home. Some of our poorer performances have been at home this year.
We need to return to Fortress Parkhead for SPL games as well as Europe and for sure we need a different standard of performance away in the CL next year.
-
3-0 Hearts
-
Armadillo,
all true....and this has been the case with every manager since Big Jock. We spend little time domestically playing against quality technical teams who have lots of possession, and whom we have to hit on the break.
There may also be something in the preparation as you mention. Many teams have had more success than us in the CL - with much less in the way of revenues.
I think that our scouting hasn't been great, so we have ended up paying silly money for players bought in inflated markets. I think that we are about to get better at the scouting, and hopefully we'll have more Nakas and Majics, and fewer Syllas and the likes.
-
Canajunbhoy
The away games in Europe, are almost guaranteed poor performances by many members of the team.
Like all rules, there are very isolated exceptions.
But I never deal in exceptions.
Bratislava, was the first and only Euro away game, in which Strachan was in charge.
He may exhibit more perspicacity, than the last Celtic manager, showed.
I myself, had noticed this obvious failing, after 2 or 3 poor away showings,in Europe, by Celtic.
But this glaring deficiency, has never been brought to the Celtic Fans attention.
-

I am glad that you agree.
Also, is it not significant, that Strachan took the unusual step, for Celtic that is, in seeking out and appointing Mr. Clark( I believe, that is his name,) as a brand new European Scouting Czar.
That appointment, to me, was a revelation on how Strachan was directing his priorities.
It confirmed, for me, very early, that Strachan was going to be a big, big improvement, in Celtic's approach to a more sensible means of finding unknown gems.
Mr. O'Neill's approach was weighted very heavily towards player's from the English Premiership. Always a very expensive market for shopping.
Martin's dabbling in the less expensive SPL was disastrous, with the dubious exception of Didi.
Strachan will and does find more nuggets in less expensive areas.
I believe that Strachan has a very keen and appraising eye for potential talent.
-
Bhoy Sean
I'd think even more than when Lubo was here also. He was decent at freekicks but missed a whole lot more than he scored.
-
Malone19, are you smoking something? Can you name many players who score with more freekicks than they miss?
-
Keep telling them Gordon
The former Coventry and Southampton manager was also typically terse when asked whether he was perturbed by the theory that the current Celtic team will be the weakest SPL champions of recent times.
"I think you're confusing me with a man who is bothered about criticism, or who reads this stuff," he said.

I've just read the Tony Mowbray letter and was filled with pride.
It contains everything that I love about Celtic.
Fans faithful though and through in the face of adversity.
Pride in the club's history and charitable traditions.
The fans inspiring the players beyond their skills.
The entire club's support of a fellow man going through personal trials.
Humility in the knowledge that we share a bond with greater men who built our foundations.
Sadly, in an era when we think we are entitled to success much of this is being eroded by the continual carping and sniping at the board, management, players and fellow fans.
After reading the thoughts of one who was not born into a "Celtic minded" family, we should be thinking about what kind of Celtic passion we pass on to our children.
In these days of high divorce rates and annulments, only
Celtic is forever.
