It would be a remarkable turn around in fortunes after Bratislava if we ended up staright in the CL draw in the summer as 2nd seeds!
WGS has made some mistakes, left back being the obvious one, but on the whole I am happy with the way things are going.

Paul-
fair point about Celtic only having lost TWO league games all season and STILL Gordon Strachan has taken some severe criticism.
Mind you -it does seem to tail off after we give rangers a beating.......

Savo from the previous thread - that's exactly why the poor sod didn't put on the celtic scarf for the picture - he makes an off the cuff comment and is battered for it for the rest of his life... He's a Geordie playing for his boyhood club ands he's asked if he'd want to play for the Celts? And he says no? He might be a bluenose he might not be (but he is English) - if that was you or me or Roy Keane and someone says would you play for Newcastle, I'd proably say - "Sod off pal, I'm a maccam"

I take it you will have seen the Lennoxtown drawings on E-Tims by now. Blatantly not a hoax (unless someone with good techie drawing skills has a serious amount of time on his/her hands!), however how likely is this to be the final plan? Last time I remember reading anything about it here or anywhere else it seemed that things were pretty much still up in the air about the training complex - whether it was actually confirmed as being in Lennoxtown or if it might still be at Barrowfield or another location entirely.
Looks like these drawings could have been done by a firm tendering for the business but they're not necessarily the finished article. Anyone shed any more light on this?
Incidentally I hope they are the finished article as they look absolutely superb.
-
I`m starting to get the Champions League fever!
But i know at the minute we are well short of whats needed.
I`m not sure if Miller and Caldwell will add much ( if anything) although Miller is very pacy - and a workhorse.
I`ve still got grave doubts about the defence - surely to god we must keep Balde - it seems we need another couple of defenders and a classy fast midfield player...................very hard to find.
Will BBJ still be here next year??
If not he will have to be replaced............again not easy.
Some players need to be offloaded
- Camera - Telfer - Virgo - Varga - Thommo - for starters.............maybe keep Telfer for cover(thats a big maybe).
Lots still to do!!
-
Thanks for that translation of the Boruc article.
I absolutely love the guy. He has such a strong character and he must be great in the dressing room. He seems a very passionate and although he talks about possibly moving away in the future, he still comes across as loyal to the club.
The fans have already taken to him, I see him becoming a Celtic legend over the next few years.
-
Hi, this is unrelated, but I thought I'd stick it in here as it might interest some of you.
Is Chelsea's era of domination good for the Premiership?
In terms of achievement and fan base, they're on the periphery of the English game: two titles and three FA Cups in a hundred years. Last season's triumph was their first title for 50 years, and I heard they only managed to sell around 22,000 DVDs celebrating their season. Liverpool's equivalent DVD sold something close to half a million copies last summer. Even if you halve that for the "Istanbul effect", Liverpool are still 10 times bigger. Either not many Chelsea fans think a first title in 50 years is important, or there aren't really that many of them around. The truth is they're a club with a core support of around 18,000 fans, posing as a "big" club. In passion or dedication, they don't even approach the numbers of United or City fans, Newcastle, Liverpool or Everton for that matter.
-
Excellent post Paul. Some well pointed out facts. I think it is clear to see that we are making good progess since the CL qualifier game. We were always going to be a work in progress this season and so its good to see that some progress is being made.
Being in CL Pot 2 will hopefully give us a much kinder draw than the last time we were there and so who knows where it will take us.
One thing for sure though, its good to be a Tim just now!
-
Bhachgen,
As I mentioned yesterday, as these drawings have all been through the planning process, it's unlikely they will change a great deal unless Celtic change their requirements. And again, I reckon the Miller Partnership (architects) would have prepared the drawings loooong before the tabloid mischief regarding the planning issues. (Planners can hold things up for things like,'Can we have an extra set of drawings?...especially blue-nose ones). Lennoxtown it will be.
I would be interested to know how these plans compare to Murry P.

Vinniethedog.
I'd agree with most of your list to leave, but think you are being unfair on Adam Virgo.
He's had a horrific year both personally and professionally, and has not played often enough to warrent an accurate judgement.
He's looked excellent in some games, poor in others but has not had a run in the team to allow him to achieve consistency.
Granted the jury is still out, but I tend to feel that he'll get the majority verdict eventually.
Hail hail!

Naturebhoy,
Yes i`m maybe being a bit harsh on Virgo - but the thought of him replacing Balde scares the life out of me - Asset Management has been well covered on here - some would get rid of Balde (Paul included) because he`s on decent money.
But i would get rid of Virgo - who`s on half of what Balde is on (for good reason)and Varga and Camera - which would save us £35,000 per week and hopefully pick up somebody decent for £25,000 per week and Caldwell £10,000 per week - so thats covered.
Big decisions to come.....................i would love to know what the budget was (wages) compared to this season.
-
Paul67,
Do have any updates with the situation regarding the winner of the champ lg being outwith the automatic qualification place(s) up for grabs in their national league (resulting in us having to play a qualifier).
As in, which teams do we need to lose in the next couple of rounds?

Delighted to see Shearer is giving his testimonial proceeds to charity.
I'm sure that will make a lot of Celtic fans a lot more comfortable with the game.
I know these guys earn vast sums but it amazes me how few actually do this for charity and any who do should be applauded.

-
Vinnie, good to hear you in such positive form.
Chairbhoy, ‘£2690 cash injection’, like it.
Chico5, good point. From memory, we need a team who will qualify from their domestic league to win the CL.
Therefore; Barca, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool, Bayern, PSV, Juve, Milan, Inter or Lyon.
We do not want Benfica, Arsenal, Villarreal, Ajax or Rangers winning.
-
If Man Utd win it this year, I'll eat my hat!
Woops!

Any word yet on the MIH interims yet? There was post last week saying they had been filed.
-
Just as important, I think, have been the victories at Easter Road, Rugby Park and Pittodrie. Getting full points at venues like these have been a huge help in opening up the gap we have.
I know this side probably isn't good enough for the Champions League but then it isn't playing in the Champions League.
Let's enjoy the next few months and see what the summer brings.
-
Straight from the horses mouth....
"Le Guen has been promised a transfer kitty of £15-20 million pounds plus all the money when players are moved on. However, David Murray has agreed that should a bigger club come in for him after his first season, he can leave for an agreed fee.
A gentleman's agreement was agreed during their meeting in Brittany on 15th January 2006 and a contract will be signed before Rangers game against Villarreal (22nd February 2006). The main transfer targets are Sidney Govou from Lyon (expect a bid of £5 million), Andreas Isakkson (Rennes goalie - £3.8 million), Rio Mavuba from Bordeaux (£4.35 million), Andy Webster from Hearts (out of contract ? 17 months ? bid of £1 million), Stephen Hammell (£675,000), Stephan Dalmat from Racing Santander (£2 million) and lastly Scott Brown and Kevin Thomson from Hibs for £2.8 million plus he sees Alan Hutton and Robert Malcolm as contenders for first team places.
Expect Lovenkrands (Real Sociedad ? bosman), Kyrgiakos (Olympiakos ? bosman), Wattereus (Feyenoord ? bosman) and Klos (Hamburg freed) all to leave on 1st June 2006. Ricksen will be told to find himself a new club as will Marvin Andrews"
-
BanglaBhoy, that turned out to be their year-end from the previous year. MIH do not usually announce interims and the moment has passed now.
They had their year-end two weeks ago, though they have another 9 months before they need to submit anything.
Rangers took the unusual step of releasing a document loosly called 'interims' last February. We may see this soon, though it told us nothing then and will tell us little again I suspect.
There was not even a balance sheet released last year.
Rangers are under no obligation to release interims, unlike Celtic.
-
Paul, i think a couple of these teams are still potentially dangerous to us.
Italy and England only have 2 automatic places (the other 2 enter at qualifiers) so only 1 from man utd and liverpool can qualify along with chelsea and the same with only 2 of the 3 Italian teams qualifying.
I may have this wrong but i thought the way you had explained it before was that we require the winner to qualify automatically?
-
I would love to see 15,000 or more Bhoys and Ghirls at St James Park showing the geordies what true support is. We've done it umpteem times before in England. Most Newcastle fans are disillusioned into thinking they have the greatest, most loyal fans in the world, they need taught. Despite what Shearer may or may not have said regarding Celtic he is giving all money received to charity so lets go and have a ball !! I have had many a weekend down in Newcastle and always had a brilliant time there. 90% of the geordies that I've bumped into always had a lot of time for Celtic, and not so much for 'them'. And the burdz are amazing !

Chico5, if the third placed English club wins the CL, England get three automatic qualifiers, with only one going into the play-offs.
-
Apologies for the mix up! If thats the case then I dont see any real dangers apart from maybe Arsenal winning the champions league (which i cant see if last nights performance was anything to go by) and Spurs holding 4th spot in the league.
-
Nuclearfalloutbhoy - it was sounding almost plausable until I read Bob Malcolm was a contender.
Out of interest, whats the source for this? www.football-rumours.com??

Surely raising the revenue we do we should be able to compete with many of the top teams when it comes to paying wages. There are eight Premiership sides in the top 20 yet we lose players to sides like Birmingham and Blackburn and have opted for picking up players from Burnley and Brighton.
-
Compare the plight of Arsenal this season with Liverpool last term! I saw a rerun of Fever Pitch recently, it`s not impossible!
Should have posted this earlier. I had to endure the Rangers game on radio, (not too scary) and I have to praise the star of the broadcast. Willie Young! ( Yes, the ex ref!)

Paul67,
If chelski win the CL would they not be elevated to Pot1 and Valencia drop down to Pot 2?
As Chelsea are arguably a better team it would be better fer Celtic if Chelsea were in Pot 2 as we couldn't be drawn against them.

According to this week's 'Building' magazine Celtic have received outline planning permission for the site at Lennoxtown based on the drawings submitted by Miller Partnership.
Construction cost is (for the purposes of the planning and warrant fee) £5m, which from my scan of the drawings looks about right.
There's also been talk of Celtic taking part in a joint venture with a housing developer to build houses on the surrounding area.
-
Timlord, I had that under embargo until tomorrow. Oh well.
While we can lose players to the likes of Blackburn, that does not mean we spend less on players overall than they do.
Nuclearfalloutbhoy, Milhouse, a lot of if’s and but’s in there. Especially when it comes to player valuations/availability/willingness to come.
-
Godfather,
thanks, I had heard previously that one thing slowing the training complex project was Celtic training to get a sponsor on board....namely George Wimpey. Seems he didn't think his exposure would have been so great 'The George Wimpey Training Complex' But the housing joint venture seems to fit. :)

Bhoy O'Bhoy (4:01),
Celtic will be receiving ony 3000 tickets for the Shearer testimonial.
Shearer Testimonial Announced
I would love to go to the game. They are a great club (now that they have ejected Souness) with a massive following. Tickets will be like gold dust..
Well done to Alan Shearer for donating the money to charity.

The Godfather if the building of houses is true, would it not be better if Celtic financed this scheme themselves and become the lanlord, thus providing staedy income for years ahead? Just a thought.

Celtic do not have the expertise to do this. They would have to buy this expertise at a cost. Therefore if Celtic own the site (or part of it) they partner someone who does have the expertise i.e. Cala Homes; who design, construct and sell the houses while Celtic take a share of the profits.
-
Bob Malcolm-who says the French don't have a sense of humour?
In the event of MleGuen arriving we can expect reams of this stuff in the bogpapers. After the arrival of Butcher and co there were long lists of who the next signing would be,including D A Maradona.
It was this kind of prospect which played a large part in the Great Man's descent into his cocaine fuelled hell
And on the subject of incoming managers-is there white smoke over Minas Morgul yet?
-
Godfather,

A lot of the revenue for the Premiership clubs will come from their TV money i.e. revenue that they don't have to spend money to generate.
A lot of our revenue will come from things like the shops, restaurants, bars at the stadium i.e. revenue that we do have to spend money on to generate.
That's life as the biggest club in one of Europe's poorer leagues.
-
Timlord
It's too simplistic just to look at revenue.
Compare Celtic to Man City for example both turning over around £60M.
The rough compostion for City may be something like:
Gate money £25M
Merchandising £20M
TV Money £15M
The merchandising will be low margin, probably costing about £17M to generate.
Celtic will have composition of say:
Gate money £25M
Merchandising £30M
TV Money £5M
At the same margin the costs of generating the £30M is £25.5M.
So to generate the same level of income Celtic are immediately disadvantaged by £8.5M in direct comparison. The EPL clubs get their TV money with no outlay while we get our income from selling services and products that cost us to provide.
I remember reading about Arsenal a couple of years ago receiving £40m in TV money. If we were in the EPL we would truly be competing on the world financial stage.
-
timlord
Does that mean rangers are out of the top 20 which I am sure they made it into last year?
Interesting that from 10th place to 1st clubs generate twice or three times the amount we do, does it say again like last year that we are unusul as the largest % comes directly from the fans?
-
Completely irrelevant I know, but hats off to Shearer for donating the proceeds. The one thing that let Larrson down in my eyes. How much money does one need FFS?

P&ddy
You said
“I think by their very nature squad players, when signed as expressly that, are by extension not good enough. Any player singed should be regarded as at least as good, if not better than what we have already.”
Sorry P&ddy but I think that’s irrational.
One definition of squad is “ A small group of people organized in a common endeavor or activity”
Celtic’s group consists of players each of whom will always be regarded more highly or poorly by some more than others. The judgement of whether a player is at least as good as another is always going to be a subjective one. That, however, is not the whole story. It is after all a team game and the only relevant judgement is that of the manager who must determine whether the individuals can contribute enough to ensure that the group can achieve its goals. That judgement has to take in economic factors as well as the others you refer to as the “Fergus Mc Cann Litmus test .”
I understand your point regarding the litmus test and it’s a laudable approach. I do wonder however who you would have fielded at full back in the early part of the season presuming that at that point you were left with a remaining budget equal to that of WGS?
I would add 3 criteria that in today’s environment any addition to the squad needs to satisfy which renders the litmus test as you put it secondary.
Any player we are looking to sign will need first to be
Available
Affordable
Willing to come
You said “Taking over from MON is like taking over from Jock Stein. But this is why I thought we should be getting absolutely the best manager we could afford.
I think the criteria above again apply. The man would need to be
Available
Affordable
Willing to come
Perhaps we have the best manager we can afford.
Finally you said
"We might have different viewpoints but are gunning for the same end result." We certainly won’t have any dispute over that.
-
While comparing ourselves financially to clubs in the EPL. I'd be interested to compare the level of debt.

Chairbhoy how many times do i have to say my problem with KD is with the man and not his standing as a player for this club before you get it?
Please excuse my use of the word moron, how about git?
With regards to my having voted for him, i didn't see too much of Jimmy McGrory either, but it didn't stop me from understanding he was special, and thinking he deserved a place at the top table.
As for a certain mr johnston, i was more of a Brian McClair man myself. Goals win games, not showing off.

Ghentlemen, Lhadies (and those of you who fit neither category), all this high powered financial talk was making my wee, sun burnt napper, swim. That was until I came across this totally unconnected, (and most of you will say, irrelevant) release in today’s sport paper here……
Botafogo, after their recent performances, have now climbed to the heady ranking of 5th best team in Brasil, based on recent form. Last season they qualified for the S.Americas Cup (their version of the UEFA Cup) and on Sunday won the first major trophy of the season. All good so far, eh?
Yesterday, they announced that they will be able to pay their playing staff their December wages (and told not to expect Januray’s until mid March). On top of this the club are appealing for a big turnout for a (relatively Mickey Mouse) cup game at the Maracanã this Sunday. Why? So that they can, hopefully, muster enough extra cash from gate receipts to pay the team’s TOTAL win bonus (about 40k GBP) for last Sundays win.
Meanwhile Flamengo (boo, hiss) are currently in debate with Israeli businessman Niv Vigdor who has tabled a 30m GBP bid for the club. Seems like this may go ahead (but not before a lot of twists and turns) with main stumbling block being who will retain the rights of the players contracts.
.......shades of a parallel universe?

Hi Paul,
Sorry to answer points on previous threads but for some reason I seem to be falling further behind, something to do with the name perhaps :-)
Noel90 :- That sounds a fairly good idea to me, one of the advantages of the net is the vast amount of people on it, even a small percentage making their views known is a lot of mail. I'll start work on my letter to each of them later today.
Estadio :- Thanks for the mention and as always you have put an interesting and concise post. Firstly let me say that I agree with you over the teachers position, our entire schoolboy football system depended on teachers freely giving their own time, it was unfair. and the only surprise was it lasted so long.
Like you I only had fleeting glimpses on a grainy B&W telly and had family who were forever telling of old games and old players. However I feel the T.V has a far higher profile amongst youngsters today, along with other electronic entertainment's they are more dependant on visual media than anyone up to around 15 years ago would ever have dreamt and it's by harnessing this power that I feel very young kids can be hooked on the game. As you point out so well though, nothing will beat the passing on of history and myth by a family, I've seen proof of this in my brothers kids, he married a Welsh girl and despite his best efforts his sons are growing up with little interest in football but a fanatical interest in both Bridgend and Bryncethyn rugby teams, this comes from extended family who are all rugby men and have passed on their love of the game
-
Don'tbrattback choccy was an excellent player for Celtic. His true value to the club didn't become apparent till he'd left.
As you say, subsequent events and all that...
His sister is lovely by the way, far better looking than kenny dalglish i might add.
-
i read in the evening times that strachan would have liked to have seen naka and michael mcglinchey on at ibrox, as if he were comparing him. I've never seen him play but could anyone that has fill me in on his qualities?
-
I was dotty on Dalglish as a player but he undoubtedly set the clock back when he rejoined Celtic in a managerial capacity in the late nineties. It was the lesser evil however. I can´t imagine how the club would have ended up if he and the ex-lead singer of Johnny and the Self Abusers had become chairmen of the board. At least Jim would have been a fan on the board, but Kenny?
-
Not like you Paul, but I think you're causing confusion
about this. This statement is correct, but contradicts what you said earlier and would mean the SPL winners would NOT qualify directly for the group stages.
chico5 is correct. We want this season's Champions League winners to be a club who qualify automatically for the group stages ANYWAY through their position in their domestic league.
-
P8ddy,
Thanks for responding last night - sorry haven't had time to post today..
I think someone else (Malone19? - thanks anyway) re-made my point re: we didn't have any fit RBs at the club and so had to buy someone. Was it approaching deadline day aswell?
To be honest I think we could have done a lot, lot worse than Telfer, all things considered... but I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that!
Anyways, you just wait till he get MotM in next years CL Final and we flog him for £2m...
[What's that nurse? Time for the medication you say? Fantastic!]

The Celtic Legend
A few years back I went to Brian McClair’s testimonial at Old Trafford, there was a buffet and some drinks afterwards, mingling with the great and the good I got a tap on the shoulder “Chairbhoy a couple of people I want you to meet” I turned round and there were Tommy Gemmell and Bobby Murdoch holding out their hands to greet me. I turned into a lump of jelly couldn’t speak and nodded inanely, those guys were Legends there isn’t a pedestal high enough or rose glasses tinted enough for the way I viewed them.
My favourite all time Celt Jimmy Johnstone, I was lucky enough to see him play on quite a few occasions but I was very young I could see his awesome talent the way he went passed defenders like they weren’t there, the only way the opposition could stop him was to scythe him down above the knees. For all that I was too young to make an assessment of how good a player he was, the reason he’s my favourite was the stories I was told about him, the esteem that he was held in and the key ring I had with the bright orange hair.
Yet Kenny Dalglish was undoubtedly the best Celtic player I’ve ever seen, because I could understand the game better and knew he could win the game for us, no matter what the score was, if Kenny was on the pitch we had a chance. I moved to England before Kenny but saw him many times for Celtic, Liverpool and Scotland. He went on win a double for Liverpool as player manager and took Blackburn out of relative obscurity to a double.
These Legends hold special places in Football fans hearts none more than Celtic, they have earned the privilege and earned our respect!

-
Chairbhoy how much respect did he have for the Celtic support when he took Murray's coin? Respect works both ways.
-
Excellent to see David Murray beginning to grind the cogs into reverse over Paul le Guen.
Yesterday - Le Guen is no done deal
Basically... "Woah, woah, woah...who said anything about le Guen...sure his wife may have been splashed across the Daily Record and his assistant was sitting in a lifeguard's chair at Ibrox with a spotlight illuminating him, but nobody ever gave any assurances le Guen would be the next Ranger manager."
Then today - Richard ready for return ticket
Here's affable Richard Gough! All the way from America to speak out randomly in the Evening Times about the Rangers job. "Many fans" are calling for Richard Gough we hear! And not only that, he would do anything to work with Ranger's again.
Great way to lower the expectations, soften them up for someone the calibre of Graham Roberts by wheeling Gough out in the paper. Get them all thinking it might be someone like Richard Gough so that when Billy Davies comes along the relief will be such that he'll be greeted as twice the manager Le Guen is.
Can't wait for tomorrows developments. I bet that in the next few days we will get to hear the heroic tale of Murray falling just short of the Le Guen capture. Another move that never was ala Hartson, Ronaldo etc. Let them think they had a chance.
