Milan, Inter and Juventus collectively sell TV rights

Italian firm Media Partners & Silva Ltd have bought exclusive international television rights for Milan, Internazionale and Juventus home games by for seasons 2007-08 to 2009-10.

This deal is a something of a hybrid, a collective sale of rights, but for the elite three only. It makes sense for Italy’s three top clubs, and is similar to the deal Setanta have with Celtic TV and Rangers TV.

While we hear leading clubs from all over Europe speaking about the importance of owning their own broadcast rights, selling those rights is a different matter, and one that will bring in more money if done with partner clubs, true in Italy as well as in Scotland.

Paul...this wil never happen in scotland. We have an agreement in place that won't allow us to do this. The lesser clubs would never vote for this in the SPL as they would be cutting their own throats

I seem to remember that a similar agreement a couple of seasons ago resulted in the smaller teams refusing to play at the start of the season, as they were not getting any cut of the TV money deals being struck. This resulted in the Serie A season being put back several weeks.

Perhaps you or one of the other CQNners can expand on this? It's certainly someting I would want to see happening in the SPL - our league setup is enough of a mess as it is!

Celtic in partner with Rangers over TV rights ? No for me, can we go it alone ?

I believe there is a collective agreement in place for the SPL. I'm sure you need a ceratin amount of votes to change this agreement so therefore it's highly unlikely that it will change.

Am i right in thinking that you can't have Celtic tv alone without having to take the full setanta package?

Celtic tv is something i would definitly sbscribe to but, i go to all home and away game's so would have absolutley no use for setanta.

    Jackd,

I was a subscriber to Celtic TV last season, then in the summer I got a note from Setyanta telling me that I could have it along with the full sports package and Rangers TV for a bargain £15. double what I was paying for the one channel that I did want. I cancelled my subs as I was told that I had to take it all and not jst CTV. I am sure I wasn't alone in making this decision so Celtic lose out on my custom because I refuse to take out the full package. Not very clever.

I am completely ignorant with regards to the TV Rights issues, however, if Celtic were interested in forming a partnership with another club(s) would those other clubs need to be competing in the same league.

Could they go in to partnership with say an English club or a foreign club.

For instance I would gladly subscribe to a deal which enabled me to view say Celtic and Man Utd games or Celtic and Ajax games.

    Paul67,

Is this Silvio Berlusconi’s company (don’t recognise it) or a rival bid?

Apologies for going of thread so soon, but I was annoyed by ‘WALTER SMITH displaying a strong streak of loyalty……..’ He conciliated for not selecting Burke and Boyd for the Scotland squad, where they were discussed more than players in the team. Passing mention to Scotland’s most talented and consistent player, Shaun Moloney.

Then stated that “Barry Ferguson is the best midfielder in Scotland, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,”

Lets look at it – best midfielder in Scotland?, would he get into the top ten?

Better than Keane, Maloney, Petrov, Lennon, McGeady, Nakamura, Pearson, Thompson, that’s before we get to the second placed team!

    Cheers Bambi,

I thought that was the case. Seems daft to me, I'm sure like you and I, there's loads of folk out there that would like Celtic tv on it's own.

Just to go back to the previous Thread, and European Qualification via the Cup...

Unless the lower League team win the Cup, the fourth placed team would qualify for Europe under the old rules, anyway, let me demonstrate...

There is a major difference between the Cup winners position, and that of the third placed finishers... third place gets you into the final qualifying round for the UEFA Cup proper, while the cup winners go straight into the first round proper.

ergo, if Hibs finished third and won the Cup, the cup winners position outranks the third placed position, and that therefore passes down to the fourth placed team (Killie? ;-)). Whereas, if Hearts finish second and reach the final, they won't be assuming the Cup winners position at all, and that would go to whoever they face in the final, irrespective of the result.

Which would have left me a massive quandry as to who to support in the semi (can't have Hearts winning the Cup, but Hibs reaching the final would almost certainly have handed that other mob a european berth), but now with the new rules, at least that's neither here nor there, so go on yourself big Mogga (and get Gary Caldwell used to lifting trophies, while you're at it :-D ).

Lobonq, Celtic and Rangers done a joint TV deal with Setanta for Celtic TV and Rangers TV. Presumably we could have done a deal on our own, but the joint deal attracted more money (as with shirt sponsor).

Jackd, I believe you are right, you need the Setanta package before you can get Celtic TV.

Bambi, Setanta are offering both Celtic TV and Rangers TV together now as neither club gets incremental revenue from subscriptions. Celtic TV is an outsourced operation, Celtic get a fixed among of money irrespective of subscription rates.

sevortb-have entered comp but am a wee bit worried as we must have won it last year and got Paul Telfer as the prize.

The majority of fans around Europe would pay to have a TV channel of their own club plus the other big teams from around the continent.(ie.3 ITA ,3 ESP, 3 ENG etc)

Obviously they would earn more money than the other teams, who could turn round and say''your not playing in our league cos your taking all the money''sort of thing.

Therefore this could be the first step to a breakaway league funded by new TVrevenue streams.

Which is where Celtic would come in.Hopefully.

I spend ages typing out a typical p8ddy rant on the previous thread and you go and post something new! You'd think this was your blog or something! ;-) All that bold wasted... ;-P

Now there's a though for CQN funding - Bold trading! (along the same lines as carbon trading)
Good grief, I'd keep the site fully paid for myself! :-)

If you are scared every time he has the ball, if you think the winger will skin him every time, if you can`t see him perfectly timing his overlaps to receive Naka`s passes, if you think there is no place for a team player then you can slag Paul Telfer.

Paul67 some nice articles, not drop by for a while since the site lost a lot of its cutting edge with a lot of yes men.

Now the latest craze to ruin some fantastic posts...

    am I 1st...

    maybe a medal...

maybe one day your well thought out posts will stir up some fantastic contrasting debates again that made this a fantastic site instead of the back slapping and desperation to be 1st to post gibberish.

Very interesting to read the item on Kenny Millar from Sporting life.It would seem that he is aware of the negative feelin around his signing in some quarters and is a little anxious about it.Let us hope that it spurs him on to win over the doubters rather than undermines his confidence.Perhaps an extra special welcome from the fans is called for to reassure him of our desire that he succeeds with us.
