Press conference update - Keane will help overcome lethargy according to Strachan

After securing a 13-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premier League, Gordon Strachan gave his players a couple of days off this week. Lack of freshness is a problem for all teams at this time of the season, so the injury which has kept Roy Keane out of action for so long is of benefit to Strachan, "Roy has stepped in at the right time when there was a lethargy about the team."

The question of who to leave out of the midfield is destined to dog the manager for the remainder of the season, especially as Celtic's most influential player, Shunsuke Nakamura was left out last week.

On this, Strachan said: "Nakamura is a very intelligent man. He has played most games this season and understands what happened last week. He was brilliant about being left out."

"What pleased me most last week was keeping a clean sheet.

"We have to make more chances than we did last week, especially as we have two players so good at putting them away.

"I knew Zurawski would be a great player for us after a couple of weeks. If you look at his goals to games ratio, it’s excellent.

"Mark Wilson done really well last week, but we don't want to keep the boy at left back. Of the players who have played in that position in recent weeks he has impressed the most. He is over his calf knock and is back to full training."

With talk of bookmakers paying out on Celtic winning the league, complacency has become Celtic's primary opponent. To address this, Strachan said: "Every training session needs to be focused. If I see complacency in training, I jump on it."

Stephen Pearson added: "It is not over, last season proved that. We need to make sure we don't get ourselves into that position again."

Its hard to imagine a team with Roy Keane in it suffering from complancency but I think he's still to stamp his mark on this team. They know he's there and that "should" be enough. It would be for me

Do or did we not have an ex-employee from t-mobile on our books?

Did rangers not sell some of their media rights to NTL a while back?

If rangers got t-mobile (orange would have been more suitable) we would get similar offers. Maybe vodafone?

Pure tripe if you ask me. Expect rangers to be looking a sugar-daddy. This is their only way out

I'm less worried if his "deal" gives him £10-15m for two years. That won't give much long-term.

If the bulk is re-financing then that's more smoke and mirrors. What would be scary is CASH in excess of £20m.

Do you have any suggestions re the balance between CASH, new loans (Hunter et al?) and re-financing?

    Guys,

Forgive me if I'm missing something really obvious (good probability), but I need to ask a few questions :

If all this conjecture about T-Mobile/Canal + investing in Rangers in order to broadcast their games via the net is true, then what negative effect, if any, did the Huns selling their media rights to NTL have?

Am I to believe that Rangers will suffer once any future renegotiations of TV packages (perhaps in the EPL of new Euro league) take place? I hope so, because in the short term they have earned £15m for those media rights and may also have a reported £100m for internet/mobile rights, which if true, could leave us trailing.

As for us, any proposed move (and with it lucrative media rights) seems as far away as ever, are we playing the long game holding out for a jackpot which may never come, whilst TFOD are allowed to restructure unchecked? I have to admit it's starting to look that way.

If Rangers can attract this kind of investment (if it exists) then surely so can we. Trouble is, if there were machinations ongoing to this end, why would we be issuing another share issue? This to me has become a major concern.

Why do so many posters on here have so much inside information on what is happening to r@ngers.

If you lot know so much about them do you have any insider information on Celtic.

If they throw money at a new manager will we respond in the same fashion with WGS?

If it is a mobile company why have they beaten Celtic too it surely globally our appeal is greater?

Or are most of the posters just picking up on rumours they have read on other sites?

    Just curious.

I am grateful to all the guys who post on here with actual facts, i.e. the strength of contracts in similar fields to this mythical cash injection across the city,
i.e. I was interested in the emirates figures with Arsenal, the aggregated EPL clubs telecoms deal etc.

But being football fans the extraordianry rumours with no real basis seem to be the ones we latch onto.

Nevertheless points for consideration to assess if there is any substance to the now rampant rumour:

Vodafone are cutting sponsorship with Man U. Is this because they feel the Glazers will seek another partner for this content or is it simply not worth it and/or just not worth being club specific?

T-Mobile would alienate half of Glasgow. They really would. How many of you ever drank McEwans for that very reason? How many wouldn't buy Nike stuff in the late 90's? (Was that just me? I am pathetic). My old man has never bought another bottle of Bells since they were major sponsors of John Greg's testimonial. Boy did Bells lose out!

Canal+, French. Is the output purely for a UK audience? i.e. where would they stand with the law in France disallowing drink advertising (Carling on the jersey)? Maybe that's only on French soil but it's an interesting one.

£10M a year for 10 years for club specific output? 100,000 people spending £100 per year on mobile video output just to match advertising revenue?!? As Paul might say, hmmmm.

A much smaller investment along the lines of buying out the merchandising is plausible, but the rest is like the classic rumours we all used to hear in the 80's and 90's. More likely is all the CL money from this year (£5m) pluse everything from the fire sale at the end of the year.

Anyway, I don't have any inside knowledge, never have. No rumours from me but I did meet a friend today, hot-shot big noise IT guy who tells me "Channel67. Oh yes. Rip snorting success by the way, plenty of revenue to come from that baby". That's the way big noises talk, you know.

    C'mon the hoops.

Ruairi Guckian - I would bring Stan on for whoever wasn't doing it - Stan could replace any of the other 4 midfielders and change the game. WGS will not be afraid to pull off NL SM or RK as he has done Naka.

The important thing would be to bring him on before things go bad not in the middle or after.

I agree that RK is now looking matchfit/ready and its great timing.

I attach the press release from the original RFC-NTL deal.

Typically short on detail, sounds like a lot of buzzwords with some impressive but meaningless numbers thrown in :

Rangers FC and NTL Inc (“NTL”) through its wholly owned subsidiary Premium TV Limited (“Premium TV”) today announced that they have entered into a partnership worth £31 million.

The agreement has been formed on the basis of a media partnership worth £10 million and a joint venture investment by Premium TV of up to £21 million.

Under the agreement Rangers Football Club and Premium TV will jointly act on an exclusive basis to maximise and exploit certain media and commercial rights excluding current collectively negotiated rights.

In addition Rangers and NTL have formed a joint venture which will operate any prospective Rangers Channel, Internet and e-commerce services associated with the Club.

David Murray, Rangers’ Chairman said“ I am extremely excited with the prospects that our future alliance has presented not only to the Club but also to our supporters. Everybody at Rangers Football Club firmly believes that with the additional funding and NTL’s expertise the opportunities are vast and will allow us to fully realise the potential of the new media age. With the strength of the Rangers brand and the technological capabilities of NTL there is no doubt that this partnership will create a powerful combination for the future. The media deal we have struck with NTL is certainly unique in its structure with no equity stake being taken in the Club but a true partnership to achieve a common goal.”

Geoffrey Hamilton-Fairley, Chief Executive of Premium TV said: "This strategic alliance is good news for the Club and its fans. NTL and Rangers will combine their strengths to get the best return for the Club from sponsorship, advertising and media rights. This is also about harnessing all media opportunities including e-commerce and the Internet, which is going to be an increasingly important medium in football. NTL has invested in Rangers Football Club because it is one of the most famous Scottish clubs with a large and loyal fan base throughout the UK and beyond. It is also a natural progression of NTL’s sponsorship relations with the Old Firm. We look forward to expanding our long term relationship with the Club into a new and rewarding association."

MoleRus, Rangers bought their media rights back for £1.

What some seem to have forgotten is that Celtic announced plans to develop TV feed to mobile phones last year.

This has been forgotten by some as it was nothing more than a minor story, with relevance to the non-UK market, Japan in particular.

Idle speculation doing Celtic down is one thing I have had to get used to, but idle speculation bumming Rangers prospect up I draw the line at.

Murray spoke last week to deflect attention away from himself and his teams performances. How many Celtic fans bought it?

Lots it would seem. I am away in the huff now.

Murray bought out NTL for a fiver or something similar. This is where he managed to add the legendary "goodwill" to his balance sheet. There is therefore no bar on entering into some other arrangement for the same.

Gweedorebhoy is a regular poster on here and has stated his own opinion based on being in the financial arena. He seems convined that there is serious money on the way. Question is (and I asked him above) what are the amounts.

There has been a lot of criticism of The Mint on this site but you have got to hand it to him. He has been consistently caught out in the past with being economical with the truth, yet he manages to lay a few suggestions with the Laptop Loyal and we have everybody and their dof wondering what trick he is going to produce next.

Unfortunately, we do not have a press that will question him but we should continue to deal with his proclamations with absolute scepticism unless he can prove otherwise. Remember this is the Press who stated, exclusively and I ma led to believe that Paul Le Guen is Rangers new manager. Which admittedly sounds better than Mr Murray told me what to write.

All we know is the following:

    1. Scottish football in the main is not an attractive proposition especially one with an enormous amount of debt.

    2. Stadium rights would generate very little new revenue for an already existing stadium. Although it mould be intreesting if anybody ay Mattel would consider copyrighting Castle Greyskull.

    3. There will be no decision soon on any super casino and despite the parochial angle from Scottish press the longs odds on favourite is Blackpool.

    4. There is no other obvious sponsorship as the strips are tied up with Carling.

    5. The internet & mobile market is in it's infancy in relation to the broadcast of game content - what percentage of the population have 3G phones. And why would Vodafone drop Man Utd if it just about to explode?

This leaves the Sentimental Rich Hun making a vain attempt to be popular, or selling the family jewels.

The problem with the jewels is that Rankers only marketable product is the shops which would generate a one off less than £20M injection with less income in future years.

The problem with The Sugar Proddy is that any significant amount would reuire Murray to give up a significant proportio of shares and the names suggested have not shown any inclination in the past for investing heavily or throwing money at football.

Skelly is all but retired and has to be careful with what he does with his pile.

Clark is in his 80s and would be concerned over the Peoples effect of sponsoring one team.

This leaves Hunter but again has shown that he has had very little inclination in the past with investing in football.

Murray has been totally contradictory in respect of finances since post Advocaat. He would never get the club inserious debt again, had to cut their cloth etc. If there is a significant investor out there why did they not raise their head when Murray was passing out the begging bowl last year and raised £800k from other investors and swapped overdrafts for £50M?

I wonder which Celtic Biscuit Tin/ Player fall out story the Loyal will run to mask the unravelling Mint promises.

Excellent post - and much needed - think we are all getting carried away here. Only one thing is for sure, if Murray manages to get £10 worth of investment then it will be blown out of all proportion by his poodle pack.

Let's see what is announced - and then lets see what actually has happened six months down the line.

Celtic are the only game in town as far as future investment possibilities go as far as I can see - what decent company would want to be associated with all the FTP brigade?

Canada, USA and Austrlian offer major distribution and brand building opportunities for both clubs.

We have all talked about the fantastic opportunities offerd by new technology - just happens Ironside is actually doing something about it.

I hate this as much as you guys do but in typical CQN loyal style if something does not fit your narrow minded agenda then it has to be nonsense.

Hunter and Skelly are huns but educated huns. They are the short term cash.

Stage two is the long term cash this is T mobile and the financial restructuring.

All this takes time and Ironside did not want to show his hand too early.

I despair at times, I really do.

When and if the "big investment" is announced and we see something like this in the rags....

Just as promised, Rangers are moving on to another level from the rest of Scottish football, as chairman David Murray announced a new investment of £53m for the Ibrox club, with a further massive cash boost soon to follow.

The eventual cash injection could soar as high as £80m as Murray guides the club into what he believes will be a new, golden era for the Scottish champions.

...are we going to say "oh no we're doomed" or are we going to say "aye that's what you said in 2000."

The above is from an article from March 2000 that Paul posted only 3 days ago.

As someone said earlier it seems like some Celtic fans just like to have something to worry about.

I reaslise this is off-topic but do you have any upate on the Rangers Management decision. A recent previous article suggested "Graham Roberts" which I assume was based on some knowledge rather than just your "gut".

Has your opinion changed? is Le Guen still a possibility? Have you heard anymore inside information?

There is no financial deal in place.

There is no managerial deal in place.

Al, clearly they are chasing the Frenchman, but Roberts is Plan B.

Surely you can understand Paul why most of us are wee bit edgy with what the baddies are up to. Even with MON - our best manager since big Jock in charge - they still managed to nick the title off of us twice - and that was with an alleged lame duck in charge. Now the baddest guy in town is talking about moonbeams of success coming their way on the back of megabuck investments - to the ordinary Celtic fan that sounds like a threat - and that’s what most of us are - ordinary Celtic fans. Well apart from Noel90 who is a comedian and an ordinary Celtic fan - that's meant as a complement Noel!

    My dear friend Travelbhoy,

    You are correctomundo.

The Stan development, is no surprise.

It is in perfect keeping with , Horses for Courses, which in turn, leads to the Current Policy which is being implemented, unseen, it seems....... of 2 to 3 viable choices, for EVERY POSITION in the FIRST ELEVEN.

This policy shall become more familiar, as the rest of the season, unfolds.......

We are experiencing a run of good fortune, which will make this new procedure, less of a gamble, than it would have been.

The Manager, will be able to give full VENT to his experiments.

The Game against The G.A. was an example of that.

Dropping NAKA was in no way deleterious to the Over All Team Performance.

The playing of Mr. WILSON...OUT of his accepted berth....... did not detract from the DEFENSIVE SET-UP.........which I thought was eminently successfull, against everything the G.A. could muster.

I look forward to the TIME when there shall be 3 alternatives to each and every position in the TEAM.

Which is the ULTIMATE INTENT of the CELTIC MANAGER.
If our run of good fortune continues....... I fully expect Mr.Strachan to involve several of the members of the Youth Ranks in more and more occasions.

    Dunfermline 0 Celtic 16

    Hail! Hail!

    Kojo.

Murray has kept this story on the back pages for months now. BFDJ at Clyde has been talking baout this investment since October/November and then of course Murray's own 'Moonbeam' statements.

If he fails to provide both the investment promised and the manager heavily hinted at is his tenure at Ibrox over?

I am not questioning the validity from a blinkered position. Undoubtedly, Skelly & Hunter have the correct make up to be Rankers investors. And you quite correctky state that they are succesful businessmen. Surely, that being said they would want a large shareholding for any sizeable investment. There has been no indication that Murray wishes to give up on his holding.

T-Mobile would only have future benefits years down the line and would have very little benefit now, while facing a potential backlash from Celtic fans. The potential income stream also contradicts the market leader, Vodafone, positioning in the market. It also contradicts NTL's decision to write off their investment in Rankers.

I would also question that Rankers have similar global prospects to ourselves. Yes they have supporters groups worldwide but this is made up of Ex pats while all connection includes the far larger Irish Diaspora, significant in roads into developing markets (eg Japan) while also building up healthy relationships throughout the continent.

Again hats off to the Mint for fully exploiting the situation. The Orcs are back at Mordor believing that this season doesn't matter because there is a brave new dawn round the corner and he has bought time at the very least.

DD has received a fair bit of criticism but in relation to investment wealth he only really bows to the likes of Abramovich. Yet apparently he is not aware of the growth opportunities that the Mint is now going to exploit.

    2 Hearts 26 29 51
    3 Hibernian 26 14 45
    4 Rangers 26 13 43
    5 Kilmarnock 26 7 41

    Rangers´s next 4 SPL games are;

    Hibernian at home
    Falkirk away
    Kilmarnock at home
    Hearts away

Hibs want the CL place along with Hearts.
In other words they play 3 of the top 5, Killie have serious financial problems of their own that qualification for the Uefa cup might just appeal to them not to roll
over. Rangers have two CL games sandwiched between this.

Does anybody really thinks that there is a major mega bucks deal in the offing so that they can watch Rangers in the SPL next year on their phones ?

    Vinniethedog, re: Rocky's

Rocky Sullivan's is still open, and alive and well. Best pint of Guinness in the USA. (In my humble opinion.)

However, the Manhattan #1 CSC moved out of Rocky's at the end of 2004. Last I heard, they had set up shop at Jack Dempsey's Bar over on 33rd Street near the Empire State Building. For what it is worth, I had heard that there were some internal issues with the club, and a split in membership, coupled with Dempsey's offering the club some incentives to move.

Nevertheless, I have not been to any games at Dempsey's as one night I went to there to check it out, and sad to say, I was less than impressed with the atmosphere there. (Also, their Guinness was pi$$.)

When in NYC, I now head over to the New York CSC at the Parlour.

Incidentally, if anyone is coming over to NYC for St. Patrick's Day, Eire Og/Gary Og (Whatever they are calling themselves these days.) will be playing at Rocky Sullivan's with house band Seanchai on the evening on March 16th. It's always great craic, and they will get to play "Those songs that they are not allowed to play in Scotland." For more information go to Seanchai's website:

If there was a mega bucks deal on the way to r@ngers and we have all been talking about it since mid December, why did the provider of said finance not forward dodgy dave a couple of hundred big ones to secure the signing of Riordan in January?

Come to that did the bank/dodgy dave have so little confidence in this investment taking place in the short term, as we are asked to believe, that they wouldnt put up an extra £200k to get Riordan knowing that the money was on the way very soon to pay it back and then some.

After all hasnt Dodgy Dave just sold part of his empire for £120M?

I hope my reply in the previous thread didn't come across as too confrontational - was not the intent - but as has been posted ad nauseum the PR machine at Mordor gets more coverage than a bubble-wrapped tutankhamun and they've been rattling on about new money, re-financing, Eck's transfer kitty etc etc for months...

...just seems to me to be all a bit too optimistic considering the state they're in.

The comments made by young Marsh seem a bit at odds with the headline[plus ce change...]
He says he wants to sit down at the end of the season and talk to Minimus about his future-not unreasonable for any young player.
He also states he wants to see out his current contract

If [DV]we win the SPL in good style and with games to spare then he'll probably be back in the nets, especially as AB is going to Germany in the summer.

After his brilliance in his first few games against Barca and TFOD he did go on to have a run of games with at least one major mistake, including the Cup Final.

Given the attitude of TGFITW to other young players this season he may have been spared a lot of damage to his confidence by the emergence of the Poleinthegoal.

Ok Three weeks before xmas Murray was promising four new signings. He even said which positions they were seeking (to give the effect that he was in control and that the ground work was being done in the background). End of the transfer window and ONLY their second transfer target could not be afforded due to them ("no longer being held for ransom in the transfer market"). Said transfer target inspires "Murray out" demonstrations. One week later poodle Eck is conversing with the laptop loyal about the finance not being in place.

Ah so Murray is on the phone to the big wigs at T-Mobile and Canal+ telling them to get their bahookeys in gear because they are making him look like a donkey´s bahookey and has got ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Tony Mowbray and Jimmy Calderwood.

Next Follows Paul Le Guen announcement by Wednesday .. no announcement on Wednesday and before you know it T-Mobile and Canal+ are bailing Rangers out

... anybody beleieving all this stop in your tracks now. A big drop is coming up soon and its called a cliff.

Have a nice weekend Bhoys and lets put a nail in Hunfermlines chances of staying in the SPL
