Champions League Pot 2 watch

It was a poor weekend for our Champions League Pot 2 watch.

Osasuna (12 games left) are faltering and now have only a four point lead over Villarreal and a six point lead over Deportivo. It would suit Celtic if Villarreal were to have the added burden of an extended run in Europe this season.

Panathinaikos (8 games left) have now moved into a Champions League spot in Greece, ahead of AEK Athens on goal difference.

Arsenal (10 games left) have a five point gap on Tottenham and a few clubs within a couple of points of them. Again, it would suit Celtic for Arsenal to have the burden of progressing in Europe this week.

For Celtic to enter the Champions League as 16th seed and gain direct access to Pot 2, no more than one of these clubs must qualify, and the winners of this year’s tournament must qualify from their domestic league.

Yep, it seems there's trouble in Spain already.

Arrests last night in Valencia and baton charges in Benidorm according to Radio Clyde and Five Live.

What will it be like at the stadium tonight when a reported 3,000 of them turn up with no/forged tickets?

On www.tornadosrapid.at site I saw very funny picture. There is a group of fans keeping big banner. It's written in german linguage "The possitive thing of the World Championship is that Poles and Englishman will give our police thrashing".
That what the newspaper say about our fans is only a part of true. Honestly speaking I don't belive there were any polish german meetings on the border. I've read about it one month ago but nobody confirmed that.I don't belive that Poles will go to Germany in order to kick up a row. There will be present only privileged ones . The tickets are distributed officialy only by the Polish soccer organization. It's really difficult to buy them in the other way.Willing to buy them is ten times more than the available number of tickets is. Exactly half an hour ago my German friend called me and informed that he has got two tickets for me for Germany Poland game.
What about the polish fans? I don't think they are worse then dutchman, englishman or any others.Sometimes I hear that the group of them devastated the bus or the train but it hapens very sparsely.Yes I know it should'd happen at all. Appart from that I don't remember any serious scandal for ten years. From time to time people say something about the english law against the fans. Polish law is less restrictional. They want to make it more hard. For sure polish fans are different to german. One year ago I went to Stuttgart to see the game against Borussia Muenchengladbach. I was shocked. Borussia and Stuttgart fans were travelling together discussing about the weather.During the game only 1 of 50 thousand fans were giving the support to stuttgarters. But thanks to the electronic outfit the stadium was full of scream. After the game we went to the restaurant, and there again the supporters were sitting together discussing the night weather. Differences? I can't imagine Legia and Wisla fans traveling together or sitting together close to each other at the stadium. Legia fans are supporting their players all 90 minutes untill the end of the game and few minutes later.Even when Legia fails. We don't whistle and we don't leave the stadium before the players will come to the stands and say hello. That's why Boruc still loves us. I know that german police is afraid about the polish fans. They are different and that's it. Maybe I know were from this banner idea and german fear comes. One and half an year ago I was in Vienna with about four thousand Legia fans on Austria Legia match. I remember our loud support, and quiet Austia supporters. But I also remember policeman with the dogs provoking us. I remember a group of drunk young austrians singing quickly composed song "polnische schweine"(polish pigs). When I asked one of the policeman to take them out, he only smiled. And I remember policeman pushing us under the seats.
And finaly nswer to your last question. Of course there is nothing bad between us and germans. We remember the history but our relationship is warm in contradistinction to the relation to the other nation.Guess yourself to which one.
I'm loud supporter but not a hooligan.

These articles are going to give us a few nail biting moments before the season's out, but compelling reading nonetheless.

How sad it is, when Hoops fans have done a remarkable job giving Scottish supporters a wonderful reputation in Europe, to see it all undone by mindless thugs, supposedly fans of Dignity FC. Just wonder what spin the Scottish media will put on it.

Anyway on the subject of Villareal did anyone read Darryl in the Herald today describe Riquelme as the "diminutive Argentine"?

I thought Riquelme was about 6 foot tall although accuracy and Darryl have never been the closest of friends.

Think you've hit the nail right on the head. Down here in England, that's almost certainly the expression the tabloids (You know which one's I mean) will use.

To any journo's that might read this site: Please try to remember, there is a difference. Celtic supporters can go to Spain, or anywhere else for that matter, and come win, lose, or draw, have a great big party. we don't see the purpose in tearing the place, or the locals, up. We are not mindless eejits, and don't like to be thought of as such. Please don't associate us with what is going on in Spain today.

A man enters a bar and orders a drink. The bar has a robot bartender.
The robot pours him the perfect pint, and then asks him,
    "What's your IQ?"
The man replies "150" and the robot proceeds to make conversation about
global warming factors, quantum physics and spirituality, biomimicry,
environmental interconnectedness, string theory, nanotechnology, and
    sexual proclivities.
The customer is very impressed and thinks, "This is really cool." He
decides to test the robot. He walks out of the bar, turns around, and
comes back in for another drink. Again, the robot serves him the
perfectly prepared drink and asks him, "What's your IQ?"
The man responds, "about a 100."
Immediately the robot starts talking, but this time, about football,
rugby, supermodels, favorite foods, guns, and women's body parts.
Really impressed, the man leaves the bar and decides to
give the robot one more test. He heads out and returns, the robot
serves him and asks, "What's your IQ?"
The man replies, "Er, 50, I think."
And the robot says... real slowly,

"So............... de ye think your gonny beat Villareal"

There are 2 angles on this qualification thing.

One is the shoe in would be great. Make us feel like big bhoys in the playground. Guarantee us some cash.

The other is that if we're any good we should see a qualifying round or 2 (is it 1 or 2) as a chnance to flex our muscles, warm up for giving the guys who think THEY'RE the big boys in the playground a wee surprise.

Like Le Guen, let's take it as it comes. If we're good enough, we're good enough. If we're not, I've been wrong since a week after THAT day.

I've been wrong before, of course. Am I right? (Logic 101, Platowasatim).

Don't hold out for Osasuna, especially as they host Barca next week.

Sevilla are probably a safer bet to finish 4th and they are only 2 points behind the Basque's.

But Celtic can still get pot 2 even if one of these teams does qualify,(It defo won't be Arsenal) so lets hope it's the submarine men!

    Good luck in El Madrigal.

Problem with a qualifying round is we might have to flex our muscles against a team like FC Basel or Artmedia-and who goes home with the girl?

    Don't be so preposterous!:)

They will definetly,absolutely,100%y not finish in 4th.

If they do I’ll eat my sombrero, with some humble pie.

...They might get jammy and win the thing though.

  • At 07/03/06 15:52, Blogger rimtimtim said…

As far as qualification for Pot 2 goes it will go to the wire in Spain. As Sean.zo says Seville are looking strong, although their away form is never that good. Up until last Saturday's defeat by Barcelona, Deportivo have been getting points away from home and suffering at their own stadium. Osasuna may come good again. They have renamed their stadium, they probably got some money from the local government for doing so. But ironically since the change of name, El Reyno de Navarra, they have not won at home. Maybe they will win at home when least expected, against Barcelona.

And then there is Villareal. Last season was a fantastic achievement for them to qualify for the CL. . They were possibly equal-first as a footballing side in Spain with Barcelona. Over the last three years they have actually got the better of Barça. They played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Camp Nou at the end of last season which showed there was practically nothing between the teams. Forlan's goals in that match also gave him the golden boot award, ahead of the favourite Eto'o.

Sorry to disagree with Darryl Brokeback of the Herald, but after his break to get over injury, Riquelme is looking majestic. Forlan is also looking lean and mean. Guayre is fit to play, Senna has just made his debut for Spain and the team are winning again in the league.

Having said all that Rangers will probably stay in the tournament after a Watterhaus punt up the pitch skites off Bazza's dodgy ankle, ending up in the net.

Thanks for the detailed response and congradulations on obtaining your tickets for the Polish-German game. I suspected that the story of the Polish hooligan threat was the usual newspaper non-story with which we are so familiar.I must say that I am of the Legia/Wisla type of supporter and need about 24 hours before I am fit for civil discussion with the opposition following a game. From the perspective of my advanced age I must confess that i believe a certain amount of unruly behaviour after a passionate game is inevitable.Oscar Wilde said (in relation to sex but it could equally apply to football)young men wish to be good but they cannot ,whereas old men wish to be bad but they cannot.Anyway best of luck to your(and our ) players in Germany

If the season ends today, then we are ranked 15th and will enter Pot2. With the CL winner likely to be one of the favorites, we will also go straight to the group stage.

    I believe that the threats to our Pot 2 status are (in this order);

1.Roma - the form team in Europe? Possibly, and only one point from out of 4th place. A tough schedule to finish the season has just started with them beating Inter! A continued run in the UEFA could hamper them.
2.Ajax - although likely to finish well out of the Dutch title race, the new playoff system for the second CL position will favor them and their late season form (they have climbed from 9th to 4th in 3 months)
3.Schalke - 2points out of 3rd place in the Bundesliga and currently 3.5pts behind Celtic in the UEFA rankings. Playing well, they are likely to get the CL spot, and, they only have to get past Palermo to accrue enough ranking points to get past Celtic.
4.Arsenal - seem to be finding some form with others faltering. Do spurs have the resolve to hold them off?
5.Villareal/Deportivo - Three teams keeping them at bay (Osasuna, Vigo and Sevilla) may do enough between them to keep them out of 4th place.

    Events that could still help our cause;

    1. Panathinaikos still on the bubble.
    2. The probability that even if qualifying outside Pot2, there will be teams ranked above us that may not make it past the qualifying rounds.

All in all, who knows, I just remember the same discussions this time last year :-(

    Guys,

I know no more than you, but I interpreted it as Murray managing to avoid his come-uppance.

But remember its Fargo, and who the hell knows what he or she has in mind?

    'oui' means yes.

..would I be right in thinking that if we take max points from our next four games we could win the League regardless of all other results?

(assuming our game against Hertz is in this)

"It did not grasp it's quarry" - I'm thinking the mint with his mining background. Which I think means he didn't follow through with the job offer - possibly related to the "moonbeam" investment not having the i's dotted and the t's crossed.
No idea why PLG is a loathsome Gypsy though.

As my mother ofter said, a watched pot never boils ;-)

As far as PLG goes, he inherited most of the good palyers in the Lyon team and had pots of cash to spend. One Question for the mint, why didn't PSG go for PLG if he is soooo good?!?!?

Just got out of 'that' place, looked in before I head to 'the other' (definitely playing "hookey".

Welcome back Fargo, good to hear from you in such fine prose.

Ain't is a bummer when people look like they are riding to the rescue and change their mind at the last minute.

I was assured yesterday by someone who knows everyone, that the Frenchman will be going to Ibrox.

I then spent some time checking out the story afresh. Evidence remains inconclusive.

Non-plussed either way (if you pardon the pun), though it would be fun to see them fall on their face.

More importantly, what an interesting season we have ahead of us. Hmmmm.

There is an interesting article in tonight evening times (no really!) a part of which i have pasted below. It makes you proud.

As the competition celebrates its 50th birthday, the iconic European Cup lifted by Billy McNeill in 1967 is to be replaced with a new Champions League trophy unveiled at the traditional hand-over ceremony in Paris on Friday.
The new silverware - engraved with the names of all the previous winners - will be presented by former Real Madrid winger Francisco Gento and Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard to Uefa's Lars-Christer Olsson.

Whilst i am really saddened that the old trophy is to be replaced, knowing we are to become a part of the new trophy is a wonderful feeling. It makes you proud.

Heres another website which is pretty much idiot proof.

    http://members.aon.at/gfluch/free_livesports_p2p_sportstreams.html

Each league is there with what matches they are showing so you know where to look. Go down to the bottom of the page and you can then click the channel which will bring you there.

The same applies to www, project 2046.com just click whatever viewer you have at the side of the match or event showing

Being reported on sky news (web) that Craig Bellamy has been arrested for alledgedly assaulting a teenage girl in a nightclub. Hope is nonsense and he did nothing, now tenuous link to the hoops but there you have it.

Rangers got absolutely smashed to bits at ibrox from porto yet over there porto struggled and we know it resulted in a draw. What will happen tohight at Villareal, I don't know but it probably won't be as humiliating as some would like, "that's fitba!"

    Le Guen arrives at Ibrox

Murray "Rangers Football Club and its supporters deserve the best and I have delivered the best. We fought off competition from (insert names of at least 5 European clubs). This is the man to take this club forward and was always our first choice etc etc"

    Le Guen doesn't arrive

Murray "The days of Rangers Football Club being held to ransom are over. I looked into his eyes and doubted his commitment to Rangers. The wages on offer were huge and I owe it to the Rangers supporters to deliver a coach as committed to the Rangers cause as they are. The search will go on until I find the man worthy of leading this great club. etc etc etc

Either way more positive spin from the Laptop Loyal.

    A bit of Light Entertainment

Reporter: So, Gordon, in what areas do you think Middlesborough were
    better than you today?
Strachan: What areas? Mainly that big green one out there.

Reporter: "Gordon, what will you take from today?"
Strachan: I've got more important things to think about. I've got a
yoghurt to finish, the expiry date is today.

Reporter: There goes your unbeaten run. Can you take it?
Strachan: No, I'm just going to crumble like a wreck. I'll go home,
become an alcoholic and maybe jump off a bridge.

Reporter: There's no negative vibes or negative feelings here?
Strachan: Apart from yourself, we're all quite positive round here. So
I'm going to whack you over the head with a big stick - down negative
    man, down.

Reporter: Welcome to Southampton Football Club. Do you think you are the
right man to turn things around?
Strachan: No, I think they should have got George Graham because I'm
    useless.

Reporter: Where will Marion Pahars fit into the team line-up?
Strachan: Not telling you! It's a secret.

Reporter: "What is your impression of Jermaine Pennant?"
    Strachan: "I don't do impressions"

Reporter: So Gordon, any changes then?
Strachan: Naw, still 5ft 6, ginger and a big nose!

Gary Lineker: So Gordon, if you were English, what formation would you
    play?
Strachan: If I was English I'd top myself
