French league considers penalty shoot-outs in the event of a draw

French football has embarked on a fundamental review of their game to overcome a perceived drop in excitement in Ligue 1.

Former national team manager, Michel Hidalgo, has been charged with looking at ways to overcome the defensive preoccupation that has produced less than two goals per game in the French top division this season.

Options under consideration are penalty shoot-outs in the event of a draw and a bonus point for winning by three goals or more.

Canal Plus, who are paying euros 600 million per season for TV rights, are supportive of move.

That would suit Rankers here with the practice they get with penalties

    Paul-

I think it would be the death of the game.

Teams like motherwell coming to Celtic Park with ten men behind the ball and trying to steal a point would now have a good chance of stealing three.

a quick calculation, we would have 7 extra points for 3+ goal wins and have had 4 penalty shoot-outs and a possible extra 8 points

I realise they are just investigating options, but messing about to the suggested extent is daft.

Penalty shootouts are exciting, but they're note really the essence of football. Fair enough for cup competitions, but really a last resort and in a league, that's not a requirement.

Football is more than just goals.Ok you win by scoring them but a team also consists of a defence therefore if you concede few goals you are also doing well.Even if a team comes to defend it is up to the other team to come up with tactics to overcome that strategy.Another example of a quick fix society.

Draws are part and parcel of the game.

If the teams draw 2-2 or 3-3 it would probably be very unfair then to penalize either club.

The other option of a bonus point if you score 3 or more could be an option -- but it still sounds like TV dictating to me.

If the weather forecast is to be believed - then conditions at the game tommorrow could be terrible (if on) a great leveller.

Celtic fans abroad dont really have a problem .........why .....its quite simple and political to a certain extent.

If Celtic fans sing certain songs that might be deemed inapropriate here.............ie Irish rebel songs.........they would not be frowned upon abroad.............where most people view Great Britain with mistrust and disdain.

  • At 11/03/06 11:04, Blogger thismancraig said…

I think that they are also considering some bizzare draw policy e.g. if you score first in a match that ends up in a draw then you get two points.

I'd tentatively support bonus points for extra goals but only in short league's such as the Champions League

That's the Champions League which Celtic are the only Scottish team to feature on the new trophy yet have never reached the last 16!!!!!!

Off topic, I would like to thank Richie for his post on Morten Wieghorst's recovery.

I've always been amazed that reverting to penalties has remained a method of choice for settling football matches (and normally very important ones!). A far fairer approach would be to require teams to withdraw players from the field during extra time until one side scores. There is any number of ways this could work but one might go like this:

Before extra time commences, each team selects and withdraws two players. At half time they select and withdraw a further two. After half an hour of extra time they withdraw two more. And so on until one side scores. Of course the rational here is that the fewer the players on a full size park the more likely one side will score a goal. And the best reason for this change to the rules, is that the most skillfull players will be the ones left on the pitch and they will be given more spaces to display those skills (and entertain!!!!).

This method can be adapted as necessary to meet different requirements. For instance, the above method would be about right for very important ties, whereas for lesser ties one could either increase the number of players to be withdrawn or the frequency, thereby (in theory) acquiring a quicker result.

    Off topic,

just been looking at Bert Kassies UEFA site, he says

Celtic (or the winners of this years SPL) will not go straight into the Champions League group stages, they will have to qualify from the 3rd round.

    Does anyone have other information?

    Daft! Daft! Daft!

Small clubs will defend for their lives against bigger clubs, with the knowledge they might steal all 3 points in a shoot out.

Imagine the possibility of a penalty shootout in a league decider, madness!

Imagine rangers getting 6 penalties in a game instead of one!

    PGTIPS

Celtic are scheduled to go into Qualifying 3rd round, it is only the scenario of who wins the CL and their respective final position in their domestic league. It is quite a complicated subject but go into the discussion forum and look out for Forza's predictions (they are the most accurate). At this moment in time Celtic will qualify directly into Pot B as a seeded team.

On another subject I've just listened to the BBC Radio Scotlands 90 mins of last night and it made for enthralling listening. I would urge everyone to go to the web site and download the ipod version. Speirs was just so proffessional in his approach.

The SPL champions WILL go straight into the group stages provided this season's Champions League winners qualify automatically from their domestic league (top 2 in Spain, Italy, England etc).

Paul - this whole topic generates a lot of discussion and might be worth a sticky thread.

That is what I thought but was shaking a bit when I never saw an allocation for the winners amongst the 16.

What was the scenario then with Liverpool last year? They missed out on qualification altogether, oh yes you mean direct entry into the group stages as opposed to merely getting into the European Cup as a qualifier.

Minx1888 I agree with you about the singing tomorrow.
As a result of UEFA looking at Rangers the media will paying special attention to us.

The press would prefer to have a "Celtic and Rangers in biggotry shock" rather that just Rangers.
If we allow them to drag us into this mess we will be tarred with the usual "one is as bad as the other" arguement.

We must not provide them with the ammunition to ruin our club's good name.We can go anywhere in Europe and not cause trouble, in fact we integrate well with the locals to the extent they start supporters clubs wherever we go.

  • At 11/03/06 11:45, Blogger stevie21 said…

pggtips - whether or not we go straight in depends on our country ranking from last year.

That's now set in stone so the only thing up in the air is whether or not this year's winner qualifies for next year's tourney from their league position. e.g. Arsenal aren't looking likely to finish in the top 2 and get direct entry to the group stages without a qualifier.

All outlined on the Pot 2 page. Also, look at the "2006 qualifying explained" link at the top left.

incidentally, I've now programmed that page of mine to read Bert's site and save the coefficient points for each team. I don't need myself or any volunteers to type it out for me :-D
As long as I can manage to click "submit", the page updates every coefficient.

Rather than the idea of penalty kicks deciding a match, I've always like the idea of the attacker and the ball starting from the halfway line, keeper starting off on his line, and the attacker being given 10 or 15 secs to score. It strikes me that there would be a bt more skill involved than normal penalty kicks.

A variation on the above would involve no time limit to score, but a defender, again starting from the halfway line, pursuing the attacker after 3 seconds.

Or how about this one. If a game ends in a scoring draw, the away team take all 3 points. For a 0-0, they get a point a piece.

I should work for FIFA me :)

Make the goals bigger and leave a draw as a draw!!
The size of the goals now is based on how tall the average goalie was a century ago (5ft 6 or so!). If they were still in proportion to modern goalies, the goals would be bigger and...
OK, and both teams would score more goals resulting in 5-5 instead of 1-1.

Just back from the newsagents. Stole a glance at the tabloid's back pages. The Record are reporting rhat we turned down a bigger deal than the JJB £48M, and the Sun are running with Dado Prso claiming that the fans who attacked the coach were Spanish fans in disguise!

my viewpoints on 2 of the current hot topics......

....if murray really wants to get rid of the bigots in his support he has a really easy solution....

instruct the manager to substitute 2 of their top players, with the u-21 players, immediately the crowd start offensive chants....

if the crowd damage the chances of the team by sectarian chanting, then hopefully that will bring the decent fans to the fore......

it's radical, but it is completely within the remit of the club....and it would bring very quick results....even threatening to impliment this sanction should have a dramatic effect........

a little info on le guen.....his deal from what i am told is.....

...2.4 million euros basic, bonus of 400,000 euros for spl win, 200,000 euros for sc win, 100,000 euros for lc win....

250,000 euros for CL proper qualification
500,000 euros for last 16 qualification in CL and a further 200,000 euros for each subsequent round with a 1 million euros for winning.....

in the event of uefa cup ...bonus levels at half mentioned above....

...but now the really interesting bit.....20% of any sell on profit for any players signed by le guen if he is still rangers manager...this figure drops to 10% in the 3 years following his departure....

apparantly the sell on bonus is with a consultancy business owned by le guen so as not to make it part of the direct managerial contact....

interesting contract, fairly innovative and possibly will work financially for rangers....although loaded with risk....

It seems to me that Le Guen is just placing more pressure on himself if this is true.

Signing players to perform on the pitch is difficult enough without the added difficulty of ensuring that they make you,and by extension your club, money in the medium term.

The more I see and read about Murray the more I think that he may take his businesses down the same path trodden by his father.

    Barcabhoy,

Makes sense to me. The only thing that was ever going to attract PLG to Rangers was money, so I have suspected that there would be some cut involved in any transfer profits to entice him to Ibrox.

    Is it innovative - yes.

Is it good business - who knows? Seems like a potential conflict of interest to me when your manager also becomes a player agent, leaving the door opent to all sorts of dodgy dealings.

Anyway, everywhere you look, Chairman Dave seems to be doing a Mr Micawber impersonation -sacrificing revenue in the hope that something will turn up.

Dont think penalties will work, teams now play for a draw and get 3, only way it might work is team that wins pen gets 1 point other team gets nothing, therefore more risky to play for a draw?

ANyone see BBC news at 630 last night? Ecks interview best bit of comedy for a while. Think he has been tasting from Miss Moss' faberge egg. First of all no comment on the uefa investigation (and wasnt it funny when herald broke the story they had "rangers were unavailable for comment", its funny they are always available for comments about moonbeams but should it be something negative the clam up), then he states thta had it not been for their "magnificent" run in europe they would be equal with celtic if not ahead of them!! you couldnt make it up.
Maybe Edward could confirm as i dont pay a lot of attention to rangers and am obv very biased, but would I be correct in saying that rangers have "stole" quite a few results this year, whether they be draws or wins, and could be in a far worse position than they are presently.

I just want to echo the comments of many earlier posters on the away support at Easter Road tommorrow.
Brown, Hately and the rest of the press will jump on anything they can in order to "Justify" their claim that one is as bad as the other.
I hope our supporters will have the sense to stick to the many brilliant Celtic songs we have and steer clear of anything that the media can claim to be "Unsavoury".
Hopefully the supporters clubs will spread the word about the fans behaviour, because if we give these press muppets an inch; well you all know what will happen.

    barcabhoy: very interesting post.

One thing DM has in spades is imagination, currently it seems to be working but for how long?

(Old joke - we will know when his imagination starts to fail him when the invitations to his marriage with Eva Braun come out!)

Confirms that the only thing that would get PLG to TFOD would be the money. I was thinking along the lines of the players themselves being given a slice of the transfer profit when they moved on as a carrot to get them to sign. The new scheme however has the advantage of increasing the number of reasons PLG has to stay at the club.

Next issue is what budget will he be given to spend? I think Dm will make one of his promises come true, at a particular point in time, 30th June for examaple TFOD will be debt free. CL monies and the £18mill JJB hand-out will see to that, the big question is how much debt will the bank allow to pump prime the asset management strategy?

A figure of EURO20mill would make good headlines but it seems a bit excessive given the short leash the bank has on the club. If it is too come anywhere near this it will include monies coming in from Klos and ... no the cupboard really is bare. Consequently the figure would have to include the wages for the players as well.

Finally could I please put forward some unlikely heroes for the FC Dignity investigation - the English press. Since they have become a bit high and mighty on the subject of racism in football. Wait for it to die out in the EPL then give it big licks to the EU nations / leagues that are a couple of years behind with their "Respect" agendas.

However now that Pandora's box has been opened so to speak, EUFA needs to balalnce the investigation in geographical terms and who is the biggest target in Northern Europe? Our good friends in Govan thats who. Consequently the "Devine Being/Creator/God" moves in wonderful ways.

Given the racism problem in Spain and the right wing teams in Italy plus the bile seeping out of the backwoods of Eastern Europe any investigation into the TFOD will, in my opinion, be long and thorough with a view to hanging them out to dry "por encourage les autres" and balance the findings on other teams. Any issues with my pidgeon french please contact the Languages department at San Moritz.

If only they had been able to get Chelsea as well with this investigation.

Finally, finally I do think that DM has had his fingers burnt before on this subject. Think 88/89 and the recruitment of "Judas" it may have been a quality bit of one-up-manship regarding the club but it hit him in the pocket.

I don't have any figures to back it up but I think attendances went down by an average of 5,000 + that season and next. That was the story of TFOD mates I had and who also made the point that these figures were never talked about in the papers until the crowds had returned to normal.

I don't know if this explains DM's current attitude or makes it worse on the basis that he knows what is going on, he knows that it is wrong but he suffers it because he wants/needs the revenue.

Anybody with any info on these years?

Honestly, if Eck is going to say that he would be alongside or ahead of us in the league but for his European involvement then surely he would have to also say that the only reason that Rangers won the league in 2003 is because Celtic went to Seville. That run, remember, extended beyond the first week of March!!

I've never heard so much drivel from him. I used to have a lot of time and respect for Eck but his stupid "unsurpassed dignity" comment, and now this has him a fair bit down in my estimations.

I lost what little respect I had left for McLeish with that statement. A very pathetic attempt to belittle what Celtic have achieved so far in the SPL.

And of course the figures dont stack up. Rangers have played 8 more European games than us so if we are 21 points clear of them Rangers would have had to have lost every SPL game after their European games for this to be valid.

Don't forget that at the start of September we were 5 points behind Rangers thus its actually a 9 game swing.

    Hi Paul,
I have to say I'm dead set against this one, often a team deserves a draw, there is also the problem that a few others have pointed out, a small team doing nothing to get out of it's own half during the game in the hope of sneaking three points in the shoot-out. To me this sounds like change for change sake, one of those daft ideas that get thrown about in meetings but are never truly thought through.
Just as all change isn't bad, the results of change aren't always good. M.Aurellius

Now that they have still been found wanting, he comes up with another excuse for their lamentable season!

Didn't we get told during the Seville run, that teams like ManUre, etc, did not complain when on a European run.
They just got on with it!
