I only saw the second half - by the sounds of things, that's maybe just as well!!
I thought we looked like we were really short of ideas at times. Maloney, as ever, seemed to be the exception with his direct play. To think I didn't rate him highly enough last season to believe that he'd break into the first team (let alone be one of our main threats!)
Big round of applause for our Shaunaldinho
-
I don't think Telfer had a particularly good game. Again.
Wilson as RB and Camara back at LB should be considered.
I think GS has too much loyalty with his old china.
-
The goals that McManus has scored for us this year have been crucial in attaining the comfortable points gap which we enjoy. On top of that another good performance from him today. A good bit of business last week
-
re Maloney
Don't you just love it when a really nice guy who trains and works for it, finally gets the breaks he deserves.
Surely Maloney should be in line for Player of the Year ?
Is Wilson Cup tied for next week ? Will we bring in Mo Mo or Wallace ?
-
After seeing Man U today I am not sure that the suggested game between the winners of respective league Cups (Carling and CIS) would be too much fun.....they looked very strong !
-
Burnley78, totally agree with your comment on wee Shaun.
I must admit i didn't feel he was going to make the grade and I wouldn't have been disappointed had he been moved on. But he's come back a better player after his bad injury and really has made massive strides.
Lubo said a few years ago that wee Shaun would make the grade and he appears to have been proved right.
All that and a good pro who has never moaned when left out, just battled his way for recognition.
Player of the Year? Seems a good shout to me.

Alan Freeland the joke isn't funny anymore, enough already! Has there ever been a more incompetent referee in the game?
and i'm saying that after he's given us 2 penalties! Mind you, only one of them was a penalty, so he even got that wrong.
-
which one was not a pen ?
-
I thought they were both penalties; and there should have been 2 more and a red card.
-
I thought Freeland had a pretty decent game and allowed the game to flow prety well.
He could have sent off Whittaker and both penalties were spot-on.He also seemed to have a fairly decent rapport with the players and was up with play most of the time.
Stan got a bit upset with him after he was pulled down a couple of times but didn't think it was worth the petty kicking the ball against the hoarding and the peted lip.

Hi, soz to change the subject. Dont know if this has been posted before but its a video clip following Morten Weieghorst on his recovery from his illness. Cracking video of his progress and brought back memories of how good a player he was.

brilliant stuff Richie, good work and cheers for that. Right, I'm convinced, big McManus is the logical replacement for BBJ next season. A killer eye for goal and a strike rate to match. Sorted.

I thought that was an immense defensive performance by Hibs yesterday, depite the few obvious lapses. The way they swarmed in midfield made everything difficult for us and their offside trap was just exquisite. It could just be that Gary Caldwell will turn out to be a major signing for us. I'd always thought of him as being a bit "powderpuff" but the way he mixed it with Keane and Balde yesterday put that to bed, for me at least. I wouldn't have any worries about starting him at CH next year, but if I was building the team I'd give serious consideration to playing him at right back. This seems to me to be the fulcrum of Gordon Strachan's team, with the right back more often than not charged with getting the ball out of defense and most moves starting there. I think Caldwell's strength and distribution would pay dividends there, not to mention his leadership and ability to organise a back line. I don't know if that's what's in Gordon Strachan's mind, but I wouldn't be dissappointed if it was. This is starting to look like an excellent piece of business to me.
-
Huddleboard saying Jinky has passed away! Anyone know anyhting? Can't get confirmation anywhere.
-
It`s good to read the comments because I had to rely on the radio and I got the impression that Maloney and wilson were good for Celtic and Hibs had Caldwell and Stewart on top form. I`d have preferred a goal to the keeper being off but a 3-1 lead may have been a signal to down tools and I`m happy with the 3 points. 13 points to glory!
Question: How come we have to slow games down to walking pace?

Confirmed on the official site.
A club in mourning.

The only consolation is that his suffering is over, and he has gone to a better place. His play was so much about entertainment that surely there can be no doubt that his passing should be marked by a minute's applause to take the roof off.

-
Gentlemen,
I can confirm the incredibly sad news that Jimmy died last night. A legend and an inspiration. Met the man many times and have lots of anecdotes and memories but, at the moment, just very depressed by the thought that a man who convinced a lot of us that our club had been specifically blessed by God, that this was no ordinary club, could have died from such a terrible disease.
-
Jinky thanks for enriching my life.

A day we have all dreaded for some time has dawned,Limmy Johnstone was the greatest entertainer i have ever seen in a Celtic jersey, even although we knew he was ill it is still very hard to take,i'm sure i'm not alone in thinking that a very special piece of my formative Celtic years is gone, may he rest in peace.
-
And the angels sang:
Jimmy, Oh Jimmy Johnstone
Oh Jimmy Johnstone on the wing.
Jimmy, Oh Jimmy Johnstone
Oh Jimmy Johnstone on the wing.
-
Was lucky to have met him a few times growing up, kind of person you couldn't and wouldn't hear a bad word about from anyone. legend of the highest order, rip.
-
Only my parents deaths have saddened me more
Jinky was the reason that i became a Celtic Supporter.
Being short myself, my parents always used him as a positive example to build my esteem whenever i was picked on as a child.
He was without doubt the single most influential football player in my life.
Every time i put on the Jinky video i chuckle and smile at his magical talents.
He was the entertainer of all entertainers, and he hurt teams aswell.
Everytime he was chopped down he would just get up and get back on the ball again.
He was brave and he was a winner.
He came from an era of greats who were beaten by the drink ,but Jinky overcame that curse aswell.
A very very special human being.
He epitomised everything about the Glasgow Celtic way.
God Bless you Jinky,R.I.P.
-
Jimmy, you were the greatest footballer ever for the greatest team in the world. We will see greatness again, but never like yours. We, and you, have been so lucky.
Tears in both eyes. I need a huddle, and Glasgow is so far away.
-
Morning all,
A sad day for the Footballing world today, the death of a legend!! R.I.P. JJ
I was lucky to meet the little fella in Viewpark around 2 years ago at a Charity Fund Raising event for him and the MND charity in St. Columba's Chapel Hall where the little man arrived with his beautiful wife and he was an absolute legend reminiscing on the good old days about his upbringing in View Park and an in-sight to his wonderful life. JJ was obviously suffering at this time however to make such a contribution to an absolute fantastic evening summed up this guys character.. Truly Amazing.
I was introduced to him by a friend of my fathers and he sat and spoke away is if he had known me all his life and I had only met him that very evening.....
A TRUE LEGEND NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN
God Bless the Johnstone Family, our thoughts are with you..
Hail Hail

The first time I can remember seeing Jimmy was in a game at Parkhead in the early 60's and in our darkest times. We lost 1-0 to Rangers to a Willie Henderson goal in the last minute. From memory the shot was scuffed hit both posts and rolled just over the line unlike Jimmy's after one mazy dribble which hit the inside of the post and came out again.
For once however my feeling was not one of despair but of hope. My relations were visiting from Stoke and I bent my dad and my uncle's ear when I got home proclaiming I'd seen our future and it was brilliant!
They thought I was quite mad - probably just a silly wee boy but I took much pleasure in later years of reminding them that I couldn't play myself but sure knew a player when I saw one. You gave me great joy and my tears are selfish I know in memory of what's been lost.
-
I was there when he stood on stage to accept the accolade of the Greatest Celtic Player Ever. No one could argue. Jinky was unique. He was at home at a unique club.
I remember being in the Hotel Rus in Kiev in 1986, before our European Cup tie with Dynamo, and the local KGB man came over to me and said the only words of English he knew:
"Celtic... Jimmy Johnstone... good!"
He broke into a smile and gave a big thumbs up.
True football fans all over the world will be mourning today. But for Celtic fans, we have just lost our favourite son.
May God rest the soul of Jimmy Johnstone and care for his family at this awful time. RIP.
-
I'm shattered to hear the news about Jinky - he was the Greatest Celt in my 55 yrs of following the team. Not only was Jinky the most talented player in keeping the ball under control he was also the bravest.
My contact with Jimmy started when we were both 14 and we were ballbhoys at The Jungle for a couple of years. I organised games between the ballboys of the other teams and Jinky even in those days was just incredible. He explained how he used to use empty milk bottles and a tennis ball for hours on end to hone his skills. At one game at CP he showed the rest of the ballbhoys exactly how he did it and we just watched in amazement.
The Lord of The Wing DVD will be watched a lot over the next few days.
Paradise has lost one of its greatest and Paradise will be welcoming a real wee character.
R.I.P.

Jinky, you will be missed by us all.
God Bless.

"And still they talk of men like Pele
and the great Eusebio..
and even Stanley Matthews, who played so long ago..
He's even aced the Belfast Boy, wee George was second best..
Not Johan Cruyff - not on your life..
Wee Jinky was the best"
The story I'd like to briefly share concerns a school holiday to France where I stayed with a family with three daughters. I was bored brainless sitting in the house with the mum and girls when the dad turned up. We exchanged pleasantries and sat down for food. Almost immediately talk turned to football and the second he found out I was a Celtic supporter he waxed lyrical for 20 minutes about the Great Jinky. Granted I had very little idea of what he was saying (I was 12..my French was iffy at best), but the sheer passion with which he spoke of Jinky was incredible and has left a marked impression on me.
The Seven from Heaven....He's just gone home.
God Bless Jinky..You'll never walk alone.
-
Sitting here at work with tears in my eyes. Might have to go and sit in the car for a few minutes to recover.
Too young to have seen him in his prime but he still gave me one of my finest moments as a Celtic fan when he chipped the Man Utd goalie the night we said goodbye to the Jungle.
God bless you Jinky.
-
The only recollection I have of Jinky is when my Dad took me to a book signing to meet him. I was too young to see him play in the flesh. I have watched his DVD so many times and will be doing so again this evening.
In his honour, the very least we can do is celebrate the man this weekend then go up and lift the cup for him.
God bless Jinky, heaven has inhereted a wonderful charachter.
-
Genuine tears in my eyes. I only saw him play two or three times in the flesh and the only one I remember vividly was a Lisbon Lions reunion match (Possibly the Jungle's last stand).
Two oustanding moments in the short match were when he jinked a player inside and out two or three times and laid the ball inside and turned to the Jungle and raised his arms to accept the acclaim. The other was an exquisite goal from about 35 yards having jinked inside to beat another player, I'm sure that goal appears on one of the Jinky videos.
A testament to his legend is the fact that my 12 year old twin sons (one a Rangers supporter) both are familiar with his name despite never having witnessed his talents in the flesh.
A sad day.
RIP.
-
Forever a legend Jinky.
-
im sure its no coincidence that he passed away so soon after being told he was being refused that treatment (on ethical grounds!).
-
I just hope that the authorities allow a minutes silence at the Cup Final on Sunday. It will be a very emotional occassion.
-
My god lust found out about Jinky. He was and always will be my favourite player.
My abiding memory as a youngster in the jungle, was the shouts of ,
“gee it tae the wee man”.
R. I. P. JINKY.
-
Time for me to leave the office however I shall raise my glass to Jinky tonite with some fellow Celts!!!
God Bless one and all.....

My dearest wish would be to hear our support - all of us really raise the roof on Sunday with Jimmy Jimmy Johnstone Jimmy Johnstone on the Wing. Let's demonstrate what the Celtic family is really all about.
-
Derbyshirebhoy
Mine also.
I thought that Man U did an incredible job in paying homage to George Best.
I posted on here at the time that i hoped that Celtic would do a similar job for Jinky, when his time came.
-
I've just had a quick look at the BBC message board and already there are a large number of messages of condolence from Rangers supporters as well - says it all really about the man and the way he conducted himself through his long illness.
He was a lovely person who bore a dreaful illness with immense good humour and bravery.
We do need to have a special day on Sunday now to celebrate the wee man's life.
RIP.
-
The Jungle Bhoys
Is there anyone out there who can get in touch with them to see if it is still possible to pay some kind of tribute to Jimmy at Hampden on Sunday.
E.G.At Old Trafford every fan held up a George Best poster.
-
Appropriate it should be a cup final when we can first show our respects. Personally I'd prefer a minutes silence as at the moment I expect you, like me, are grieving.
Perhaps a minutes applause at the next home game when we can show our appreciation for a true legend but the over-riding feeling at the moment is grief.
"The star who had everything" was the caption on my Jinky poster when I grew up.
RIP Jinky.
-
While i'm aware that clubs can't put up monuments to every great player, i don't imagine too many comlaints about something in this MANS honour,we,the fans voted him the greatest, now let's see us,those same fans, raise whatever is neccessary to erect a fitting tribute to the man who made us all so happy so often,Jimmy, you will NEVER WALK ALONE.
-
God Bless You Jinky
What about having a placard display at this Sunday's Cup Final of a giant Number '7' as a fitting tribute.
-
A minute's thunderous applause at Hampden, with both sets of supporters joining in, live on television, will be a fine tribute.
I also think that on this occasion it would be fitting if Celtic Football Club got in touch with the Jungle Bhoys to organise a truly fitting display, no expense spared.
The wee man's worth it.
-
I like that suggestion BlantyreKev - a minute's silence at Hampden and applause at Hampden.
Dunfermline are the perfect club to have as opponents - ignoring recent Yorkston related idiocy.
Also, as a long term memorial - I'd say the training ground should be named in his honour.
-
That would be applause at Celtic Park - the place he graced the most.
-
God bless you wee man.
One of my early Celtic games and memories is the ball shot and coming off your head and into the Hibs net in the 6-3 cup final and you and the rest of the stadium creased over with laughter. Didn't sum up your sublime talent, but showed your infectious personality.
-
Rest in Peace wee man.
Jimmy 'jinky' Johnstone forever a legend.
-
Its a sad sad day, not just for Celtic Fans but for football. It has lost one of its true heros.
Rest in peace wee man you truly were magnificant!
I've put togethet a small piece on the memories thread in memory of this great footballer and great man.
TBE.
-
Rest in Peace Jimmy.
You will always be in my heart.
-
I have been sitting here, my emotions are on a roller coaster .
One minute sobbing, the next smiling when i think of Jinky twisting and turning, tormenting opponents.
The next i'm concerned that Celtic and us as fans, ensure a fitting tribute for the wee man.
Does anyone know where the best site would be to place flowers?
I thought about the stadium.
-
I'd agree silence at Hampden then applause at Celtic Park.
The club have just over a week to come up with a fitting tribute.
-
new article posted.

Good idea on the training complex. And we could have a facility in it called Jinky's School Wall.
And following celticlover's post earlier, maybe Jinky's Milk Bottles.
More suggestions?
-
its a tough read today, well more than that really, a rangers fan came up to me at work, and offered his condolences on a "magnificent wee toerag" this same man who hasnt spoken to me in 4 years, it sure is a strange world.........
for me the training complex should be named in his honour.. because all celtic players should aspire to be the next great player,..... there can only be one best ever celt..........
