Weather awful in Fife, but don't see as a leveller as Hibs try and play decent football.

3 Points today would clinch league before split.

In true keegan style. I would LOVE it if we did that!!!!

    apologies for posting twice

Dont want to nit pick Edward but are you accepting that rangers play the tune to a BIGOTED song over tannoy (ie billy boys) not one that mentions a team name or refers to a team as animals or any playground banter but a song that has the line "up to our knees in f**ian blood surrender or you'll die"
Will you accept rangers play this tune overe the club tannoy and therefore cannot possibly be doing all they can to erdicate bigotry when they actually use it to create atmosphere. I hope you do not take this as a personal slight on you as I normally enjoy and agree with a lot you write but was disappointed that you did not seem to admit bigoted songs on the tannoy and kinda drifted away onto other points.
Just that how can a problem be addressed until the true extent of the problem is accepted. The first step would be to stop playing billy boys on tannoy.
I ask a genuine question here, was billy boys played on the tannoy at home leg v villareal. If not then why? Rangers know its wrong so wont play it when uefa listening but belt it out when scottish teams go? AM i wrong?
Again sorry if this seems personal, just interested in your answers as a level headed ordinary decent guy who happens to support my rivals. ANd again dont think celtic are whiter than white but there are no sectarian songs played over tannoy at celtic park.

    Hi Paul,
For once I hope your score prediction comes right :-)
MGM78 :- My apoligies I did go on a bit of a tangent, however I agree the playing of the billy boys over the tannoy is wrong, I utterly condem the song and the meaning behind it, I hope I haven't given the impression I condone it in any way. I agree it should be stopped, it's offensive, and has no place in any society never mind a modern one.

Half time. First 30 belonged to Hibs. Boruc gifted Riordan a huge target to hit. Boruc really needs to wise up, to many poor decisions/judgements for my liking.
Great peno from the wee man and we are back playing a bit. Second half should be interesting.

    HT Hibs 1-1 Celtic

For 35 mins we were competely overrun by Hibs and created not a single chance. After Hibs scored the game changed. Hibs for some reason took their foot off the gas - possibly tired after their earlier efforts on the heavy surface. Celtic took the upper hand at 0-1 and were awarded a penalty after a great run by Maloney. The replay confimed a bad challenge from behind. Great finish by Maloney.

No complaints from me about Boruc for the goal - the shot was well placed in the top corner.

Keane had a good effort saved by the keeper just before HT after a good pull-back from the bye-line by Magic.

I would have expected WGS to make a change at HT given the first 35 mins but he may keep things as they are now that we have got ourselves back in the game.

i think we all thought boruc was leaving too much space at the free kick and so it proved.

we didn't start playing till our goal.

far too much space in the middle and sproule was getting too much room down the right.

petrov's now sitting deeper and we've slowly cancelled out the hibs threat.

this could be the game for pearo again. a wee bit pace and dig in the last 20 could win us it.

see how the first 15 goes and then maybe GS should make a change.

    mncelt,
if Boruc had have been a step to his left he would have made the save. He on purpose invited the free kick taker to try and beat him at his left post whick Riordan
done perfectly. Just seen it again at half time. Boruc is too far to his right.

Lucky to escape with a draw so far...

First 30 minutes mostly hibs...Sproule unnerving the back four with his relentless running and their 5 across midfield closing down our 4..

Boruc positioning at the free kick was well suspect- he did well to get even a hand to it...

Great piece of running from Maloney who when away to release our first shot on target from open play got up ended. Cool finish for the penalty.

After Stan dropped back into midfield we looked a bit more composed....

Keep up the last 15 minutes performance in the second half and then stick Dublin on for the last 15 and it will come.

Bobo and McManus must keep their heads when sproule is attacking them....

    Come on the hoops!!!

    Sir Paul,

    Hibs, "settled", much much, quicker.
Therefore, seemed to be in the ascendancy in the first half hour.

Hibs did score...... but..... although they had all of the play.... really did not do much...... their "goal" was very obviously.....offside.

Otherwise, they wasted any chances that they carved out.

Once Celtic scored.....the Hibs crumbled...... it was eleven Hibs behind the ball....... therefore..... it was all Celtic ...the last 15 minutes.

I believe, Celtic will run riot in the Second Half... They have now "Settled in".

Strangely lacklustre performance. I think Stan Petrov looks more the part at the fron of the midfield five rather than as an out and out striker. Agree with Emjay - Pearson on (for Neil Lennon who looks particularly out of sorts) if we are going to stick with one recognised striker.

A hard fought win. All credit to Hibs who never gave up - they lack a good centre forward.

Our missed penalty gave Hibs a lift in the same way their goal did for us in the first half.

No stand-out performances today, a hard fought team win. Maloney worked hard, won us two penalties and scored one - so MOTM for that effort.

Boruc will be partly blamed for their goal but dealt easily with everything else that came his way.

Defense looked pretty solid even when under a lot of pressure in the first half hour. Midfield found it hard going, Lennon probably pick of the bunch in there.

Magic and Stan (when forward) did not get much service today.

Anyways, a good 3 points and another 2 points gained on our closest challengers. One step closer to being crowned Champions :)

  • At 12/03/06 16:02, Blogger Lubo said…

A hard earned 3 points. A wee bit fortunate in my view to get all 3.

Sorry but I don't think it was undeserved at all on our second half performance. To be honest it could have been a rout at the end.WGS made some positional changes at HT and from there on in hibs rarely threatened seriously.

We played some good football again and it was a smashing game.Hibs are a real good team and have some terrific players. Whittaker in particular is a fine right back and Thompson is as good a midfield playmaker as you will find in the UK.

Once we had their measure it was one way traffic. Maloney did to them what Sproule was doing to us in the first 20 mins. After that he ran out of steam and ideas.

Pretty impresseed with Caldwell, he uses the ball really well out of defence. Steve McManus what a useful player to have .He's scored some damned vital goals for us in the big games.

Well done WGS, another big, big result for us.

timoot & emjay - agree with you both. We didn't start well against a good team & needed to dig in. We did that & slowly but surely damped Hibs' fire. We put them under pressure in key areas sufficiently to get a one man sent off & one who should have been for a second yellow. It could easily have been 4-1 (that would have been a harsh on Hibs).

Fantastic result - gritty is the best word I can think of for the performance. Would have enjoyed the beer a little slower if Maloney had stuck the penalty away - but yet again he made the difference between losing/drawing and winning.

I will personally not be able to exorcise the ghosts of Black Sunday until its won but I think we have a boss who knows that there are around 1 million Celtic fans who need the physcological repair that this title will bring. Personally I'm a fruitcake in the football sense and the images of last May haunt me....

3 hard earned points. You dont get anything for free these days. Maloney was outstanding and I'd point out Caldwells performance for hibs. He looked like a one man defense. He looks like a decent catch for our squad.

Overall a hard earned win on a rather soft trodden pitch, Bitter cold with snow falling.

Nakamura was ok in parts of the game and remember that without the " Pass " there wouldnt be the " Goal " i.e assist for McManus.

If we had a better right back (Wilson?) then we would be able to hurt taems more. Telfer defensively is poor and offers little going forward. Blind spot Mr Strachan?

That's very much the dilemma John.

I count myself as amongst those who are very uncomfortable with the open support of the IRA by some amongst the Celtic support and feel that I have every right to consider that support of that organisation has nothing whatsoever to do with Celtic Football Club and is indeed an albatross around its neck, particularly in terms of its perception within the UK.

Equally there are many who see that support as intrinsic to their right as Irishmen and women or of Irish descent to demonstrate their pride in achieving freedom from English oppression. They seem to take the view that any attempt to make them stop is an attack on their Irishness and a reflection of a bigoted Scottish society. They will on the other hand condemn the Rangers support for songs that for them reflect their history in defence of what they see as their rights e.g the Sash. Is it political or sectarian?

I do want to see us celebrate our Irishness. Similarly I want to see us take pride in being a Scottish Football Club. Whether the two are irreconcilable amongst our own support I really don't know and only wish there were an easy answer.

I can only repeat what a much wiser man than I said some time ago

Oh, wad some power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as others see us!
It wad frae many a blunder free us,
    And foolish notion.

It would be a very interesting prospect for the opposite sides of opinion to list what songs and chants they find offensive in the other in the hope that some sanity might emerge and common respect for others but that's not got much to do with today's society has it?

BTW hope you had a good trip. We can certainly agree on being entirely happy with the result.

Guys anyone know where you can access stats on players for each game? Particularly number of passes complete - even better if this is split into Forward / Backward passes.

In a team that can at times retain the ball so well, Mr telfer is like a fish out of water. But I'd like to have some stats to back this up before launching into one!

I know opta used to to do it but anyone got a link?

BTW - Good result despit the performance. SM was MOM by a mile.

Good game today and Hibs were maybe worth a point, they caused us some trouble even with ten men.
I thought Maloney was incredible. Just before his mazy run for the first penalty he won the ball in the tackle on the half way line! He took the penalty really well. Obviously with the new set up up front some of the passes were going astray but Celtic always looked threatening. With McManus getting the winner it was a good day for our home grown talent again.

    A workmanlike three points today.

However,i have in all ,my time never seen so many misplaced passes as of those played by Telfer.

I have no criticism as such of the rest of his game but i lost count of the times he played the ball to an opponent.

The away bhoys must be commended for their"due diligence".

    Just back from the match.
I don't remember ever having such bad weather conditions to get to a match.
I left Leven at 12 and missed the first 30 mins of the match.
When i arrived we were already one down.

I thought Maloney was our MOM by a country mile.
I thought Wilson was poor and that Telfer had a good game.I thought that Keane didn't play that well.
Baring in mind that i missed the first 30 mins i thought we were the best team and deserved to win.
Hibs are a good side to watch.

I wish that we had bought Steven Whittaker instead of Wilson for the right back bearth.

I would not play Naka and Maloney from the start next week.
The defensive balance of the side isn't correct when they both play together.
I would play Dublin and Magic with Maloney on the left and Stan on the right.

Remember this post, we must ensure that Andy Todd is marked at set pieces.
    Dion can do that .
All in all a very good result.
5 more wins required ,unless TFOD beat TWFOD.
    Hail! Hail!

The mystique you are creating around our new playmaker is causing me to lose sleep.
I lye awake at night wondering ,who can it be?

What slithers can you give us.

    Whodunnit?

    Hi all
Excellent result and at this stage it is all that matters.
Provan and Guidi on Clyde are slating Celtic in Provan's case "if this is Celtic playing well they have no chance of competing in the CL," and always harping back to Artmedia.
Guidi critical of the signing of Caldwell not Celtic class.
Remind me but we are 21points clear of a team who nearly got to the last 8 of the CL, and frankly we would have gubbed Villarreal this year.IMO the CL is not such a huge step as some would have us believe, with IMO the exception of Barcelona.
Kojo is it Germane Jenas or Defoe?

    ????

Maloney - Was the only forward player we had today. An off day for the rest maybe. Strong contender for Player of the Year. AlthoughI wouldn't go for him myself he has won a number of matches for us.

McManus - Personnelly I would say he is definately Young Player of the Year. Improving all the time which is all you can ask of a player in his first full season!

And neither of them cost £3m but made the significant difference today.

23 WINS out of 29 games!

    Just back,

Weather not as bad as first feared but crowd was pretty sparse today obviously because of it.

Hibs started the game better and got the goal they probably deserved. However, after we equalised I thought we controlled the game for the most part. It should have been more comfortable and we hung on a bit at 2-1 but this was due to Hibs gambling and leaving magic 1 on 1 with their central defender in order to push more players forward. I thought we would score on the break at that point but alls well that ends well!

Singing was not too bad with the exception of some small pockets of fans that probably wouldn't be heard on TV.

    tinytim
Can't agree with you about Wilson/Whittaker. I have paid pretty close attention to both since the time both were linked with us and I think we made the right choice.

    mackybhoy
you appear to be a hard man to please!

Dessybhoy, some things never change. An away win in terrible conditions and still no credit!

As I have mentioned before.. If the h*ns finish second they will get more credit for that than WE will for winning the league.

tinytim - would that be Steven Whittaker who conceded two penalties today? Hardly a ringing endorsment of a full back.

Loved the match, both teams attacked at all times, great to watch and be at

Maloney easily man of the match ( mackyboy think you may have the wrong player)could have scored cracker in the last 2 or 3 minutes
Wilson was very good apart frm 10 mins against Sproule in the first half

lots of dig, was good to see

Downside was that i was stuck in middle of the buckfast mob who tried to belt out BofTOB the whole time

glad it did nt come over on the telly

forget the IRA songs we dont need them

If Rangers had won this game it would have been called a griity result by the chapions elect

We do it and we are derided, IGNORE THEM they are sick as parrots

    tinytim,

Firstly well done in getting to the game today.

I would suggest Whittaker's defensive qualities let him down. Indeed had it not been for his error we would not have had a foothold in the game at HT.

    Mackybhoy, what are you on?

Shauno is overrated. He has been our best player (and the SPL's) this season by a mile! If he is overrated then i would love to know who you think IS a good player!!

As for big Mick, as far as i am concerned, he has scored the 3 most important goals of our season so far. League winning goals.

We're about to win the league and you slate the whole team after we WIN away from home against one of the best teams in it. Lighten up!

Tinytim, in actual fact we will have virtually sewn it up with just TWO more wins and a draw, if TFoD beat TWFoD as you suggest, and our draw is against Hearts on April 5th. This would leave Hearts able only to equal our points total by them winning and us losing every remaining game thereafter, and they would require a substantial shift in their favour in goal difference.

To be absolutely sure we just need to win our next three games, and Hearts to drop anything between now and April 5th. So even if they get a point against TFoD we can wrap it up at home to them (Hearts) on April 5th.

    Hail! Hail!

I'll happily wait a few weeks and want Hearts beat 'them' and also Hibs to keep plugging away, hopefully for a top 3 finish... with 'them' in fourth !!

I have to disagree with the disparaging comments about Mark Wilson. He did have a torrid time of it in the first half hour, but remember he is playing out of position in the left back slot. However he stuck to his task well and most importantly lasted the game very well. He had a great run up the park near the end and was very strong in the challenge in the last ten minutes. He looks every inch a footballer and will do for me.

By the way, all of us in the pub could see where O'Riordan's free kick would go!!

Surely we can't seriously be interested in where others finish.

What does it matter who finishes below us,all that matters is that our house is in order.
