Kenny Miller can look forward to a uniquely Glasgow welcome

Tonight, Hampden will provide a uniquely Glasgow welcome for Kenny Miller if he dons the blue of Scotland as a Celtic signing.

Celtic players do not always have it easy playing for Scotland, but Miller has the added pressure of having rejected Rangers, his previous club, to play for the champions-elect instead.

He will play under a pressure not seen since Alfie Conn joined Celtic thirty years ago. Many will hope he fails.

Added to this, he has spoken to the press about his concerns at being prematurely assessed by an anxious Celtic support.

He will need our unqualified support, as not all of Glasgow will give him a warm welcome.

For once Paul I agree with you wholeheartedly.

When Miller was scoring against Italy and Norway he was - by the media - the greatest thing since Barry Ferguson (shurely some mistake) however once he signed for Celtic the snide comments from the press started - this is basically done to plant seeds into the heads of the Celtic support who cannot think logically for themselves to undermine the player.

Much as I was against the signing (quality not history) he is a Celtic player now and will receive my usual 100% backing and support.

He will of course now be the anti-christ by a major section of the Scotland support.

Celtic fans however should give him
a great big welcome and plenty of time to settle as a GIRUY to all the hun element of the media

    Dear All,

I seen KM at Edinburgh Airport a couple of weeks ago. He seemed a bit wary of people around him, probably a common thing for well kent faces. But then who knows what grief he's been getting recently.

I welcomed him on board and mentioned that we're ALL looking forward to him joining in the summer.

Irrespective of what has gone before he IS one of us now.
So give him your support and if you see him give him the same message.

Kenny will get tremendous service from the midfield and will score at least 20 goals next season. Well, that's what I think. I know he hasn't been prolific but in our team I even fancy myself to get a dozen goals a season and I've got as much talent as some of those people you see on top of the pops these days. Chico could probably do us a turn. Don't know who he is but I keep hearing his name...He must be good then ???
Any decent striker for the hoops should pass this landmark easily.

I wish KM all the best.

I think the fact the he used to play for rangers might help him win over the Celtic support in a strange kind of way. The more abuse he gets from them the more it will encourage a lot of the hoops doubters to lay off him and maybe even back him.
After all, he is one of us now.

G14 to take part in EU review

From the stated article in today's list.

I remember listening to a UEFA representative when this was first launched who derided the G14 and stated that there was no need for UEFA or FIFA to have any dialogue since the G14 was not a body representing anything.

Perhaps they are boing to pressure or power?

There is an alarming quote from the G14:

'When we talk about G14 being the voice of the clubs, we don't just mean the 18. We mean all clubs,' Bettega said.

The idea that the rich and powerful cartel represent the best interests of all clubs is laughable. Often interests are diametrically opposed such as the media revenue returns from the CL where G14 Clubs benefit to the detriment of others.

    The G14 should be discouraged from assuming this mantel, unless of course they let us in. :-}

    Hi Paul,
Much as I think Mr Miller chose the wrong team to return to Scotland with I agree with you that he should get the full backing of every Scotland fan when playing for us. I'm sure I'll be among those chanting reject or failure at him when he visits Ibrox but hope he plays the game of his life each time he plays for Scotland. On the bright side I'm glad it means it's a Celtic player rather than a Rangers one risking injury in internationals :-)

After he said 120 odd years of dignity etc, I asked them if they thought he included their signing policy in this. The answer I got forced me to give up. Paul Cooney said “no he meant dignity since HE had been at the club”. So there you have it McLeash has been at Ibrox for more than 120 years!

I think Smith's not picking Boyd simply because he's not up to the standard needed if we are to have any chance of qualifying for the World Cup - at least not as yet. There is no doubt that Miller Riordan and O Connor and Mc Fadden are presently better bets. Boyd has an eye for goal but has no pace and would struggle at international level. Naysmith? Why on earth not? An extremely good left back with a number of Scottish caps. I'd be delighted if he regained his place.

Let's face it the Irish play Ian Harte so what does that tell us? Certainly not that Ireland are awash with talent though they have had more of that in recent years than Scotland have had. As I've said before if these lads had the choice between the Scotland of the 60's and early 70's and Ireland I don't reckon there'd be quite the same pull. Professionals want to play on the big stage and will go, if they have a choice, where offers best opportunity.

The reaction to Kenny Miller will be interesting hope he does well and Maloney gets a deserved start.

I was watching the Norway vs Scotland game in a (heaving) Scottish bar in London, when the injured Miller was replaced, a guy turned round to me and said - "not Beattie"

    "He's playing well" I said.

"He's a Tim" and proceeded to slag him each time he was on the ball. I've noticed many times if you wear a Scotland top (Rugby - the current football one is a bit metrosexual for me) it's assumed you can't be a bhoy!

    THIS SHOULD CHANGE!

With Tommy Burns in the management, Miller, Caldwell, Wilson, Maloney - the youngsters coming through ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL Celtic should have more of an input into the Euro 2008 qualifiers than anytime (in living memory!)

I hope that Miller is not treated unfairly and I don´t think he will be. I think there has always been a hardcore scottish support who are only interested in getting behind the team, some of them follow no other club teams. But when a 60,00 crowd at Hampden was swelled with say 10,000 - 20,000 Glasgow Rangers minded fans, at the first sign of a mistake a Celtic player would be booed. I think this has diminished down the years as the Tartan army has emerged as a positive phenomenon. Remember they had their "Seville" themselves as well in 1982 when they danced in the streets with the Brazilians and they were just as happy after the 4-1 hammering as before. Scotland supporters began to lose the image as moaning faced drunken troublemakers after this.
Derbyshirebhoy - you are clearly more up to date with the merits of the current players in the squad than I am and perhaps these other forwards are more deserving of a place in the squad. However tonight's game is not a World Cup qualifier it is a friendly and Scotland have not won a friendly in Glasgow for ten years. Sometimes goalscorers do not appear to be great players but they have an uncanny knack of putting a ball into the net, that is what they are needed for. Boyd can obviously stick them away, his goal against Hibs for R2ng8rs recently demonstrated that. Besides he might get tired out playing for Scotland!

Poses the wider issue not yet touched on. Can they fill it? My guess is that there will be spares going at either venue.

Hampden is the National Football Stadium and as such should be the designated venue. I can't believe their fans don't want a big day out, but want to play each other down the local park.

40,000 if they're lucky would be my guess.

Paul, one of the many positive things that this site enjoys, is its lack of sectarianism, you personally deserve a lot of credit for that. Having read and re-read the blog on KM today, I still had the same thought in my head, fanning the flames kept coming to mind.

Kenny Miller's statement to the Celtic fans was I believe, more about performance than reception. Unfortunately the reception he can expect off of the r*****s fans supporting Scotland, is sadly predictable so there is nothing new there.

The comparison with Alfie is justified, even although I like to think Scotland as a nation has moved on in the past 30yrs, somethings will never change.

My point is I dont think we should be giving the detractors of this site any ammunition, when you think of the number of Scotland caps the likes of Jinky and Bobby Murdoch won and the abuse they took from so called Scottish fans, I like hearing the anti-Celtic brigade trying to justify it, because they cant and it was shameful. For that reason alone I dont think we should go down the same road.Yours John-b.

My opinion of this scenario which is building up ,One the young kenny can feel himself, is that he is being built up high only to be cut down hard and fast. Such is life for a scottish player in scotland.

One or two Scotland performances have put him on a platform. One which he'd better stay on or face the music from the general scottish Celtic support.

This is the reply from Sky after my complaint of their coverage of last weeks game at the place of all things evil.............

    "Dear Mr

Thank you for contacting us regarding coverage of Rangers v Villarreal and for your patience while we investigated your complaint.

I was sorry to read of your unhappiness with our commentators reference to the vocal support from the home fans in the 85th minute of this Champions League match.

As I am sure you can appreciate, all of our commentators, including Ian Crocker (the commentator for this match), are concentrating hard on the game in process. They hear the background noise but not the actual content of the shouting and the songs. The last thing Ian Crocker, who is English, would expect to hear is a song with the offensive line that you mentioned. Also our sound men are trained to listen out for foul language and to cut the microphones when appropriate. Unfortunately, in this particular case, a song like this would and did catch them out due to Ian Crocker and the sound engineer being English and unaware of the wording/history behind this song.

If I may also explain, Rangers Football Club have made huge strides forward in eradicating sectarianism from the ground. However, there still seems to be a small minority of the supporters with these bad habits. Sky Sports themselves are also involved in the 'Let's Kick Racism Out Of Football' campaign. Kick It Out works throughout the football, educational and community sectors to challenge racism and work for positive change.

I have been assured by our Deputy Head of Sky Sports that he will be instructing our commentators and sound engineers to be more vigilant, and not just to listen for bad language but for songs and chants of a sectarian nature.

Thank you, once again, for taking the time to contact us.

    Your sincerely

    Angela Hart
    Viewer Relations "

Make up your own mind !!!???

John B, thanks for you supportive words.

I try to stay out of the sectarianism debate, as you know, football blogs have real limitations in areas such as this.

I have some fears for Kenny Miller, largely as a result of what I have read some Celtic fans say here, sectarianism is not one of them though.

If an ex-Celt declined to return to Celtic and joined a better Rangers team instead, we would be gutted, and not full of good wishes for the player.

When Rangers fans see Kenny Miller in the hoops, they will see their own decline in him. This is a former Rangers player who would rather play for Celtic. The pain of losing a goal to Kenny Miller will be double that of losing a goal to any other Celtic striker.

The infamous banner a Celtic fan brandished at Fir Park recently about Kenny Miller is a sign of what can happen if wise heads say nothing.

We need to be alert to his need for support.

Pablo, well done for bringing the case to Sky. I tend to sympathise with Ian Croker, who I suspect is not up on the words coming out of Ibrox (my sympathies have been developed over watching the 6-2 DVD so often).

thismancraig - that line stood out for me as well. Very poetic, Paul67 :
"When Rangers fans see Kenny Miller in the hoops, they will see their own decline in him"

I'll support any player that pulls on the hoops. Kenny Miller isn't a signing I would have made but I'm not employed to make these decisions. Similarly, I find it unfair to publicly criticise a future player before he's got the chance to win us over.
I've a sneaking suspicion that he'll score some great and important goals for us despite others being our top scorers. Maybe my optimism's taking over - or maybe it's just a reaction to anyone else rubbishing him.

Agree re Peter Osgood getting more caps, especially since people like dear old Jeff Astle amongst others got games for Engerland around that time.

Cooke, Hudson, Osgood, Hutchinson and Hinton was the Chelsea front 5 around that time.

    Leabgarrow

Re CL / Europe performances. Even taking the average over 5 years I do not feel that Celtic has been better than average given the funds available and standing of the club.

3 eliminations in Group stages (2 dropping into UEFA) and 1 did not qualify resulting in a strong UEFA Campaign.

Yes we beat the 3 sides you mentioned, but 2 were in the UEFA Cup (not generally valued by the top sides), and the one CL win was easily offset by a 3-0 away defeat which contributed to an early demise from the competition for Celtic.

I appreciate the point re Porto going on to win CL a couple of years later but this was with a different coach and a number of different players. Liverpool similarly had a radically different set up, indeed they were major underperformers the season we met them.

If the `small minority' were being congratulated for making such a large noise how did this `small minority' manage to achieve making it sound like the majority?
If indeed it it a `small minority'
does this not indeed make it easier to root them out?

    Dear Paul67

I am at the end of my tether and am contacting you in a last desperate attempt to save my marriage.

Since my man has discovered this site my family's quality of life has reduced drastically. I am a woman of needs, I have desires. I need the bathroom painted, I desire a new kitchen. How will this happen If I am constantly overlooked and have become second best to a computer.

My man is a stranger in my home now. A few weeks ago I tried as hard as I could to entice him away from the monitor, I went to Ann Summers and bought a rubber catsuit. When I approached him and offered him a good night in he point blank refused, saying he wasn't in the mood having just received a "right good bolding" from someone called Paddy!! Is there more to this site than you are letting on??

On another occasion I noticed he had left the PC and was in the bathroom. Good I thought, I will get his attention now. I shouted through the door that perhaps we might get a vidoe this evening. No was the reply, "I am going thro' hoops in here trying to work out a Kojo!" Well I did what any devoted wife would do. Anyway, you should have seen the look on the doctors face when he tried to explain it wasn't a case of chronic constipation, but in fact a riddle from this darned site!!

Then on Monday night I thought I had made a breakthrough as he bounded in the door proclaiming "Quiz night tonight Doll!" Ah great I thought he's taking me to the pub. You can imagine my dismay as he passed me on the stair with his Celtic companion in hand!
However a short time later I was perplexed to hear him furiously cursing St Anthony, Is there a satanic thing going on here, and this was two days before Lent!!

The final straw however was today when our little daughter returned home from school proudly holding her artwork. Imagine the look of pride on my face turning to despair as I gazed down at the picture. It was easy enough to make out her scribbles, Me, the dog and our lovely daughter were obvious enough but her daddy was just a mass of hair perched in front of a computer screen. "Why didn't you draw his face?" I asked her...."Face??" she answered quizically, "Stacey in P3 said her Daddy's got a face, but I thought she was talking nonesence"

Now he's talking about a golf thingy somewhere, he must think I button up the back. Over my dead body will he be going anywhere with a bunch of depraived, Godless lunatics!

It has to stop I tell you!!

    A propos of nothing.

I keep reading on this blog, paraphrasing, "not my choice, but now that he's a Celtic player he has my 100% support."

You can always give 100%. You can never give more than 100% (unless you're an accountant and don't understand the real world) :). But as we all know you can frequently give less than 100%.

Simlple arithmetic. The second you give less than 100% support, irredemiably you have damned yourself. You can never again achieve 100%

When someone you "always had doubts about" has a bad day, missing a sitter against Rangers for instance, do you say hard luck, better next time, or do you say I knew you weren't good enough?

For most people, their initial response will always cloud their judgement. We always want to be right.

For 95% maybe more of the Celtic support, Gordon Strachan can NEVER have 100% support. Makes you think, doesn't it?

Certainly Barcelona would have liked to win but their main focus was of course La Liga, whereas this year it will definitely be CL.
Of course I was there, and not up in the gods like most of the Celtic fans in Camp Nou, much closer to many Barca bigwigs than you might think on that occasion. I honestly do not think it was a big issue for them. For me it was the difference between the CIS and the SPL in terms of level of concern.

    Dear CQN Widow

May I say you sound like an absolute babe. My own Mrs 67 recently attended one of those Anne Summers evenings herself, do you think I should take this as a sign?

Mrs 67 has suggested I will be unable to offer any practical advice, as I am similarly afflicted. Perhaps you two could start an Anne Summers blog?

    Hmmm.

Jeez I thought…, I heard the BBC news this evening and thought I had misheard that the Ibrox offender was a policeman. Remarkable on many accounts. Once upon a time this story would not have left the stadium, some things change, some stay the same.

Liam Miller scored a grand goal and cleared a shot off the line. With the right support, this boy could be a star and yet so many 'fans' treat him like a criminal. I didn't get it then and I don't get it now. Can anyone explain why he attracts such hatred?? He could be great for us.

Would Like to add my tuppence worth to the debate about watching Scotland games. I am very proud to be Scottish and want my country to win at anything they take part in, but I can no longer bring myself to actually go and watch the National side play. The last two times I have been to watch Scotland play, were around 1984, against a very good Spanish team, when Dalglish scored his wonder goal. As a young 14/15 year old, my dad had secured a main stand ticket towards the Celtic end. As the teams lined up for the anthems, the guy sitting to my right shouts, "right Jazzer (Jim Bett) lets get stuck into these Papish b******s. When I tried to tell him the error of his ways , his mate told me to eff off as my kind were "no welcome here". I looked around for support and got hee haw, in my proximity. Bear in mind this game was sold out. My next venture was in the early nineties when SFA used Ipox for the home games, and I was asked by my new boss if I wanted to attend a game with him. It was a euro/world cup qualifier against Portugal and from memory the score was 0-0. My abiding memory of that evening, was the abuse that John Collins and Tom Boyd took that evening and even worse was what Brian McLair had to endure when he came on as a sub. As I said I want us to win at all times even though I can never bring myself to attend a game again, even though a good friend of mine assures me that these things no longer take place.

What does wee Shauno have to do to get a game though? Gary Teale? Alexander? Just because they play in England.

Pablo, Lorcan et al; can I claim primus inter pares on the Rangers league table (or more precisely its lack of a number one position). I spotted and posted on this last Thursday night - believe it or not because I was looking for the full address for Murray Park to find it on multimap. So if KTF are claiming credit then they stole it from me (and CQN)!

I did actually ask Edward for a comment at the time but he must have missed that....

    CQN Widow 7.03pm

    Excellent post welcome to CQN

However you do deserve a Kojo for your last paragraph.

"Godless lunatics" is a bit harsh by any standard (particularly on Ash Wednesday) perhaps you could be a bit more subtle and refer to us as "atheistic morons"

That way our fellow CQN brethern of Free Presbyterians, Seventh Day Adventists, Mormons, Muslims, Buddhists, Hebrews, Baptists and Orthodox Christians among us won't get too offended.

There are many parts to our "broad church" (including a renegade but quite nice Teddy Bear) and so taking a mighty blunderbuss to us all for our devotion to all things Celtica is a tad unfair.

Your other half has finally realised the he belongs to the FORCES OF LIGHT and once this revelation crystallises and deepens then the meaning of his and by extension your life will change everything. What a wonderous existence you will have.

Let the poor man absorb the power and enlightenment of CQN and in the long run you will no longer be a CQN widow but a fully converted, committed CQN contributor who knows the anxiety of receiving a p8ddy bolding, the frustration of a Kojo riddle, the embarrassment of a noel90/supercelt joke being played on you(especially if you are over 30) and the trepidation of a Paul67 Hmmm!

Once you experience the power of CQN then you realise that the battery operated world of Ann Summers can never replace this.

CQN widow we look forward to a great and enlightenning future debate.

In case anyone at CQN doesn't know the main man at Sky Sports is Andy Melvin - who older posters may remember from his days at the Daily Rec?rd (Scotland's Shame). This man is a die hard Ra...ers fan who pretends to be a Motherwell supporter.

How you can say Miller was "mince" is truelly beyond me!

He ran his heart out for ninety minutes, had some great touches and made loads of nice passes and flick ons.

He was by far Scotland's best player if not the best player on the park; playing up front practically on his own.

Can't believe Maloney didn't get on never mind start!

At 60-70 minutes we were completely flat and crying out for some fresh legs yet the only subs we make are at half time.

You say Kenny Miller was "mince".

IMO he was our best player, in another woeful Scotland performance. His workrate and the calmness in his finish are to be applauded.

As for Gary Caldwell, they should never had played with 3 at the back. I think he has shown enough with Hibs, that he will be a good addition to squad.

Kenny Miller WILL score goals, bring pace and a tremendous workrate, the ability to defend from the front.

To say he was mince, IMO WRONG. Thats the thing about football, different opinions watching the same game.

I also support Scotland and hoped they would get a result. Celtic internationalists are special. Wee Maloney is precious. Like John, like Henke, he has come through career a threatening injury. I want to see him play a long career in the Hoops, and Scotland. I agree with you and am pleased that he has been spared the possibility of injury tonight!

    Policeman on racial abuse charge

The officer has been charged with shouting racial and sectarian abuse
A policeman has appeared in court charged with shouting racial and sectarian abuse at a Rangers match.
Greg Louden, who serves with Fife Constabulary, allegedly carried out the offences during the Champions League tie against Villarreal on 22 February.

The 27-year-old has denied committing a racially aggravated breach of the peace and causing another breach by shouting sectarian abuse at Ibrox Stadium.

Louden, from Dunfermline, will appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court later in 2006.

The policeman was charged with committing a racially aggravated breach of the peace by intending to cause alarm to a player or players from Villarreal.

He is alleged to have committed another breach by swearing, making lewd gestures, shouting sectarian abuse and inciting others to do the same.

What I seen: 110% effort, great goal, and was in his own half defending as much as he was attacking.

    Tinytim seen: Former ran***s player.

Tinytim is looking for the reaction he got by writing that comment, either he is extremely small minded and only sees what he wants, or he doesnt see at all.

I'll admit I wasnt impressed when we signed Miller, and a CQN search will show that. I said all along, I dont care who he played for, I just didnt think he was good enough.

But you know that way you watch a player a bit more closely when you have more of an interest? Well Kenny Miller was the best player tonight, hats of to you Kenny Bhoy.

On the same subject, the whole defensive performance was very poor, so I've not got much to say about Caldwell tonight. We know he was m.o.m against der hun, so that convinced me with him, tonight Kenny conviced me, and WGS will reap the rewards for this brave move.

Imagine that was a foreign striker we all watched tonight, and we had signed him on a pre contract, this place would be buzzing.

I'm feeling depressed tonight after the scotland game, you'd think i'd be used to it by now. *sigh*

The thing that annoyed me the most is WS terrible team selections and substitutions. Does he go to any SPL games? I'd hazard a guess not by the amount of EPL duds that got a game. Russel Anderson has 5 MOM awards in about 7 matches yet can't get a game over Weir who is likely to retire soon. Bringing on Stephen Caldwell over Maloney when 2 nil down. It's crazy.

But i'm chuffed for Miller, another goal, and a very well taken one at that. I've been supporting him on the board the last few days, posting his video compilations and defending him. I'm glad he didn't let me down tonight. He's a player that plays with a lot of heart as well, Celtic can't have enough of them.

I think he has 5 goals in 6 games for Scotland. That is an amazing international record one Rooney is miles off. Keep up the good work son.

G.Caldwell didn't do himself any favours tonight :(

I am just back from Hampden and in my opinion Kenny Miller was Scotland's best player. Though it has to be said that the others were pretty poor.He started out the game playing wide on the left hand side of midfield and second half he basically played up front alone. He took his goal with a clinical finish and set up a few other chances. He certainly has pace and playing with better (Celtic) players I believe that he will score quite a few goals for us.

Gary Caldwell started out playing right side in a back three and second half played beside his brother in a back four. He did no more than OK although you can see that he likes to play the ball out from the back on the deck.

Scotland ended up a shambles after Switzerland's 3rd goal however they are a useful side and after all they did qualify for the WC out of a very difficult group.

For the record, Messrs Miller and Caldwell did not suffer any abuse from the terraces.

For Scotland, I am afraid the future looks pretty bleak.

    Gordon.

    Goal 2 - Guess? Goeff Hurst's third against w. Germany 1966

Goal 3 - Diago Maradonna Mexican World Cup Argentina vs England

Goal 4 - Guess? Jarzihno for Brazil 1970.

The San Siro or Giuseppe Meazza.

The name of the stadium is the Giuseppe Meazza and the area of Milan it is in is San Siro in exactly the same way we have Celtic Park in the Parkhead area of Glasgow.

The name is officially the Giuseppe Meazza and contrary to a popular myth does not change depending on whether Milan or Inter are at home.

The reason very few (if any) Milan fans will call the stadium by its official name is that Giuseppe Meazza was an Inter Milan player.

As for tonight Kenny Miller was easily Scotland's best player but after what happened to John Kennedy I'm glad Shaun didn't get on. We all know he's the best attacking midfielder in Scotland. We dont need 25 minutes against Switzerland in a friendly to convince us.

Strange how they picked one lone voice shouting sectarian/racial abuse when there were tens of thousands doing the same!!!!
Agree that Miller played well tonight.
