Miller shows pace and touch as Scotland fail to inspire

I thought Kenny Miller handled his Scotland role very well last night. He clearly has pace to burn, similar to Bellamy and Beattie in this respect.

His goal was one of those chances strikers hate; clean through with the goalkeeper to beat, but with lots of ground to cover, he needed to control the ball and finish when running at speed.

Lots of scope for things to go wrong.

If Miller was the best Scotland player on the field, Gary Caldwell had a less productive evening, clearly playing in a defence that was short on organisation.
I am sure he will be glad to get back to a familiar defence.

Never watched the Scotland game last night. (if they were playing in my back garden, I would shut the curtains and phone the polis!!)

However, good to see Young Miller played well, according to the chaps on this site who did watch it!

Next season will be a real test for him. He knows that there are many Celtic fans, still not too enamoured with his signing, and that he will have to hit the ground running to stand any chance to win these fans over.

I wish him the very best of luck!!

posted this just as Paul announced "new article posted", so here it goes -

    1. Barry Ferguson is 78 yards away from the referee at Ibrox and
Bob Malcolm is 65 yards away. If 'Bazza' can run at 21mph and Bob can
run at 16mph, who will be sticking their vein-bulging forehead into the
hapless whistler's face first, assuming Bob does not stop to stamp
on an opponent on his way.

    2. If one minute of time is taken up in a game for substitutions
and one minute for injuries, how much injury time will be added on by
the referee if Rangers are losing at home?

    3. 'Bazza' is a Scotsman. Express, as a percentage, the number of
internationals he has missed on a Wednesday evening compared to the
miraculous recoveries he made for the following Saturday.

    4. Glasgow Rangers FC are one of the "giants of world club football".
How many more European Cup Finals have they appeared in than Steaua
Bucharest? (For one extra mark; How many more than Reims?)

4a. How many more times have Glasgow Rangers won the European Cup
    than Nottingham Forest?

    5. You are the referee at Tynecastle. How near to a visiting
defender does a tumbling Sorti Kyrgiakos have to be to earn a penalty if he
goes down in the box? (Note: Round your answers down to the nearest
    20 yards.)

    6. Probability. Express the statistical probability of visitors to
Ibrox being awarded a penalty. Compare this with the probability of
opponents of Glasgow Rangers being awarded a penalty home or away,
and then discuss if a penalty awarded to Glasgow Rangers would be
awarded to their opponents in identical circumstances.

    7. Mark "The Hun" lives in Brechin. How much does it cost for him
and his two sons to travel to the Theatre of Silence every other
weekend, including limited edition matchday programme, a few drinks and a
macaroon bar all round? How much could he save per week if he
    watched his local team instead?
(Note: Round your answers down to the nearest hundred pounds).

    8. Kyrgiakos is 6ft tall and very strong. How much pressure need be
applied to make him tumble over in the opponents penalty area?
(Note: Answers must be in lbs per square inch.)

    9. What is the total number of chickens counted before they were
hatched by Glasgow Rangers and their supporters who thought
    Hibernian were a pushover.

I have to agree with you Paul. from what I saw of the game (bits of the 1st half, most of the 2nd) young Kennygoal was the standout of the Scotland team.

Friendlies are dull as dishwater though aren't they? Looking forward to the return of the CL next week after that nonsense last night.

I think Kenny Miller will be an excellent signing for Celtic.

I have seen some of his goals for wolves he´s a hard worker who can creat chances and he just loves to score.

    I think he´ll be a great asset.

Meant to add to my previous post:

One thought on Miller is that he looked good last night against a team whose defence played quite high up the park, giving him the option to run onto the ball over the top. Not something he will encounter too much of in the SPL.

Has he been signed for the CL games only? Are we about to take on board the previous much-vaunted policy of another SPL team who it was suggested would field one team in the CL and another in the SPL?

    ;)

It's funny how the memory plays tricks as the odometer of life clicks round.I am sure that Packy was the surehanded colossus between the sticks I used to watch but on the Centenary season show on Friday there were numerous clips of Packy coming for crosses with all the assurance of Sheik Abu Hamza.

Next thing I'll be discovering that the Shooglemeister knew where he was going with the ball, prior to it ending in the back of the net.

North to northeast 6 to gale 8
    Occasionally severe
    gale 9 in southeast Iceland.
    Snow showers
    Good occasionally poor.
    Light icing.

well lads, was at the Irish game meself last nite. With a lot of Celtic,Ex celtic and players linked with celtic on show, it made for very interesting viewing. Given was calm as ever, and quite how we ended up letting him go,and held onto stewart "discovered crisps when he was 20" Kerr is still beyond me....truly world class is Shay. Ian Harte, who is practically begging WGS to sign him had an ok game, although his lack of pace is always a concern. The big man has a great left foot though, but Im still undecided if he could offer anything to the Celts. Though it kills me to say it,Liam Miller is beginning to look like the player he was for us,circa the Champions League matches against Lyon and Anderlecht....his goal was an absolute screamer, but I was still begrudging clapping the wee prick. Now, 2 players who have been linked with Celtic: John O'Shea, who had a fairly average game in midfield, while Robbie Keane had the best game I'v seen him play for Ireland for a very long time, and would be a great addition to the Celtic cause. For the Swedes, there was a certain mister Larsson playing upfront, but apart from a volley that flew just over in the first half and a great chance which the keeper saved at his near post,Henrik hardly had a sniff. When he was taken off with 15minutes to go,he got a fantastic reception. If anyone could fill me in on what kind of reception Kenny Miller got,it would be appreciated. All in all, a very enjoyable evening of football for the Irish.

DBBIA; your mind wasn't playing tricks and unfortunately I remember Packy at crosses only too well. Along with the odd howler - which I suppose every goalkeepr does on occasion (copyright Fabien Barthez) - judgement at crosses did tend to be his Achilles Heel.

In fairness I think it's actually part of the fitness for purpose test given to all Celtic goalkeepers before they sign - they have to fail that bit before we will give them a contract. I do have a nagging doubt that I've expressed here before that Mr Boruc has the same affliction.

  • At 02/03/06 11:56, Blogger dontbrattbackinanger said…

If we get Beats fit, then with Shaun,Zuraw and KM we would have fast, mobile forwards and the ball could be played from the back into spaces behind the defence, bypassing the midfield.

So Mick to Magic could become like Joe Montana to Jerry Rice. This approach set up a couple of goals against the Pars, and may suit in Europe,if we play a counterattacking style.
    Which depends on fixing defence...

Artur Boruc had a nightmare I´ve been told last night

"Dempsey, a midfielder with the New England Revolution, nodded the only goal after a cross by Eddie Lewis was dropped by goalkeeper Artur Boruc.
The goal came as a shock to Poland after they had controlled most of the match.
"He (Boruc) made a mistake," Poland coach Pawel Janas told reporters.
"He said he was sorry in the dressing room but that's not enough. He has to do more than say he's sorry."
The Celtic keeper had come on as a substitute for Liverpool's Jerzy Dudek at halftime. "

Anyone got an update on fitness situation re our various players playing internationals last couple of days.

If we have the full squad fit then do we continue with same 11 for Aberdeen as we had at East End Park or do we expand the play a bit more by re-introducing Naka?

I think Aberdeen may come down to play a 4-5-1 and do little to take the game to us so perhaps a bit of Japanese magic is what we need for this one.

However given the good performance at Dunfermline (even though the Pars were truly poor) the same 11 might consider that to be good enough for another start - certainly I would if I was fortunate enough to be a player in an 8-1 winning team.

However the supporter in me would prefer to see Nakamura playing to open up what is likely to be a red curtain across the park.

For me Petrov, Lennon, Keane and Nakamura across the midfield with Maloney getting a wee rest until the second half when either Lennon or Keane come off to allow Shaun to drag Aberdeen around CP a bit more.

    Just my tuppence worth.

I could`t get my name out quick enough!!!!

Seriously - not a good experience - although i did have the last laugh.

I was speaking to many Barca fans after we cuffed them - and i can honestly say they were gutted - and the newspapers the next day!! you`d have thought it was the end of the world - speaking about sacking Rykaard!!

Maybe the big shots were`nt to bothered - just like here???

They thought they were going to win that cup!

Paul, being a little kind on G Caldwell??

Didn't Magic score a couple at Dunfermaline by beating the offside trap?

Miller and Magic will terrify defenders.

I foresee the return of the sweeper in the SPL to cope!

Caldwell however...... never good enough for Celtic...... He's not a better option than Balde or McManus.

Thanks for the video of Kenny Millar.I have been following the discusion on this site regarding his abilities with little first hand knowledge.Even allowing that your video is a selection of his greatest hits i nust say I am impressed-left foot, right foot,in the air ,both inside and outside the box and great pace.

As for packy Bonnar I felt his form slipped after 1990 and never recovered. My memory of his latter years is that the fans were very divided between the respective merits of Packy and Gordon Marshall.I also think Packy as an ex-Gaa player never adapted to the change in the back pass rule.I still get palpitations at thge thought of him doing an Irish jig trying to get his feet right as a forward chased in after the ball

    Hello

Only caught the 2nd half of the game. Kenny Miller does have pace, and took his goal very well. He was also a wee bit unlucky to be called offside on more than one occassion.

Gary Caulwell has a wee bit to go yet, but this fortunately was only a friendly, so I wouldn't be too harsh on the guy.

Also managed to see Liam Miller's goal against Sweden. He looked to be in very good form.

    Hail Hail
