Petrov gives an insight into a post-Hartson Celtic

In over 60,000 comments left on Celtic Quick News this seasons, not one was bold enough to suggest ‘stick Petrov up front’.

In his seven years at Celtic Park Stillian has moved about a bit. The Josef Venglos prodigy was played at right back by John Barnes, I still remember him freezing when Lee McCulloch ran past him to score a Motherwell winner at Celtic Park.

Martin O’Neill moved him into central midfield, but played him right side midfield last season, a move that did not bring the best out of Petrov. Performances seemed to suffer as soon as he moved from his ‘natural’ bearth.

It tells us something about where Gordon Strachan’s confidence is that he could substitute John Hartson, the clubs leading scorer, and ask for something new from Petrov.

Most managers will play it safe. If you experiment and it goes wrong, there will be thousands ready point out the error of your ways – Ross Wallace at left back being a very relevant example.

If your manager is not confident enough to take the odd risk, he will not learn all the things he should.

What Petrov done for the team by moving up front was make a space for the sublime Nakamura to inject his own unique energy into the team, and give the midfield two mobile targets to play too.

It was the first crystallisation of what Kenny Miller and Maciej Zurawski will look like together.

John Hartson is having a great season, his best yet for Celtic, but if I put together all the Gordon Strachan comments about movement and pace, I cannot get away from the belief that he does not fit the Strachan mould.

I expect Hartson to be used sparingly next season.

Paul67 I suggested Kenny Miller will continue to play mid field (as he does now for Wolves) to allow Stan The Striker to play upfront.

Maybe you could see that it was half in jest.....but it was also half serious.

Petrov is a common 'value' bet for me to score first goal. Usually about 12-1. Has a bit of a striker's instinct and is an intelligent footballer, passing and then moving to create space in and around the box.

Tactically it was a great move by Strachan and he has to be applauded for it.

I still have my doubts re Miller in that I think he is a better counter-attacking player. Pace is always a huge asset for a striker though.

Not meaning to split hairs but I'm pretty sure Petrov was a Dalgleish / Barnes signing not Dr Jo.

One thing I have been pleased about is the lack of moaning by Petrov and fans about him 'playing out of position' either on right midfield or an impromptu appearance up front. I've always felt that Petrov plays well on the right of midfield with a good RB allowing him to move inside at times.

Personally, I would rather we kept Big John next season rather than sell him on as some seem to be advocating of late - he offers us something none of oue other strikers can

Yes Petrov was a Dalgleish / Barnes signing not Dr Jo but he was the one who I.D. him and the Dalgleish / Barnes followed up Dr. Jo's lead. One of my big regrets was that we did not have Dr. Jo for longer.

    Hi Paul,
You say that Mr Hartson will be used sparingly next season that may be so but I don't think it will be with Celtic.
Molerus :- I have often disagreed with Paul (in what I hope is a friendly way) over his generational prediction, one of the problems is that it's so hard to define, but much as your team are the better of the two at present I would be inclined to agree, with those statistics we are in the middle of a generation of domination, Paul was right but about the wrong team :-)

As much as Dr Jo did some good things and signed some good (and some awfully good) players, he also brought in Scott Marshall on loan!

Imagine replacing Dr Jo with John Barnes. The equivalent of replacing MON with Steve McMananman

Finally, can we bring back Davie Hay please, I really liked him

  • At 06/03/06 17:51, Blogger malone19 said…

You always have to look at Hartson and say: Ok, he doesn't offer movement or much workrate but if he was out the team it would be difficult to get someone in who would score as many.

However if you look at it from a different perspective it may be the case that, by replacing Hartson with a striker who doesn't score as many in a season, the team overall may actually score more goals (and possibly concede less).

Hartson's goal tally although excellent isn't outstanding in the way Larsson's was. I can see of the current squad Beattie and Zurawski being on the same level in terms of goals in the same amount of games in a season.

That being said, Hartson offers the team something different. While many will see him as one dimentional that dimention is one we would not have without him.

The thing that bothers me at present is I do not see any form of partnership with Hartson and Magic... I think Hartson and Miller would work and also Miller and Zurawski, even Miller/Zurawski and Beattie but for some reason Magic and BBJ seem as if they are playing individually. Zurawski is often out wide when BBJ tries to head it down to him and when Magic breaks through he has no support. To play with Hartson I think you have to be a more direct player; Magic likes come back and work for the ball if he's not getting the supply he needs.

Dr jo did not id Stan petrov. Stan and Martin Petkov were touted around Europe by their agent, both had trials at Celtic and Olympiakos amongst others.

Stan had already caught John Barnes eye in a friendly between Bulgaria and England.

I missed the game on Saturday, away celebrating the big 40 (although I'm clinging onto my 30's until Wednesday). sounds as though it was a good performance. I saw goals on CNN, no other Scottish result was mentioned. Another 3 points and another game forward towards the title.

Paul67 re: BBJ being used sparingly, would it not be better to sell (asset management) and use Dion sparingly? My thought process here is if our go-forward MO is mobility then a target man will always be a rescue player. If that is the case the best value for money player should be retained (cost/mins played).

I would support this If and only if Dion can show us he can perform to the same level as BBJ. I think I would try and give him a run to see what he has in that old locker.

Just want to clarify that I meant I'd like to bring back Davie Hay in a scouting role, a job he did so well under TB and Wim.

Edward - I would suggest that Rangers generation of dominance ended the day MON walked into Parkhead - the respective points totals (and OF results) over the subsequent 6 seasons would indicate a fair gap between the two sides in terms of league perfomances.

But for 3 more goals at the right time Celtic would now be on the road to 6 in-a-row (I know, ifs and buts, ifs and buts).

I don't subscribe to the generation of dominance theory, but Mr Murray will really need to pull a rather large financial rabbit out the hat to give his new manager a significant transfer kitty - the saleable assets down govan way are pretty limited don;t you agree?

Wouldn't be surprised if BBJ was "rested" after the league is won and WGS experimented with only 1 up front, but with either Stan, Naka or Wee Shaun playing in the hole behind Magic.
We seemed to be able to pull the Aberdeen defence out of position easier after BBJ went off and some of that is because Stan is prepared to drop deeper for the ball than BBJ so pulling their defence out and creating space for others, ie Magic, in behind.

    Just a thought!!

The formation of 4-2-3-1 is played by a lot of Spanish teams i.e. real Madrid it depends on the overlapping fullbacks, plus a target man or someone who can hold the ball up such as Hartson.

Theballisround.... Whether the last generation ended when you say I'm not sure, but it does show just what you can do with figures, right now both sides can claim a roughly 66% share of the titles depending on when you start. I do think a fair bit of spending money will be made available to Mr Le Guin when the last i is dotted and t crossed. as you say money making options seem quite limited but I do think the money will be found. I've heard a few folk say they aren't too worried about him coming to Ibrox, being honest would those folk have the same opinion of him had he been appointed at Celtic Park?
btw without trying to boast I'd like to point out that I've been saying Mr Le Guin would be at Ibrox since Oct/Nov (if I got it right more often I would be boasting, but I'll claim prescience in this one)

Great photo. So which one was the millionaire.

On Saturday having decided we were getting no return from BBJ, WGS decided to change things.

We watched him prior to the change having a really long discussion with the other coaches, before deciding to go with Stan up front.

    It worked great.

However he had no other viable alternative other than Dublin who is the same type of player as BBJ, which shows exactly why he has added Kenny Miller to the pool. The need for further variation.

I don't believe he has finished recruiting Strikers.

    Watched Saturdays game again.

you could maybe have seen our formation and tactics for away games in europe next year.

magic, up front with supporting midfield players, 3 in central midfield ensuring that we have a solid base, when defending.

it showed that keane and lennon can play in same team, lennon covering and keane breaking forward, haven't seen the man in attacking positions and as many shots on goals for years. just shows what a player he is, and how good he was in his hey day. still the man, in many ways.

it shows that Gordon can play a variety of formations/tactics with options. kenny miller, craig beattie, aideninho mcgeady to come into squad.

    an excellent performance all round.

a couple of signings in summer, and again we'll still be the TEAM to beat. Yes Ra@@@ers will strengthen, but we will have a settled side, and whom have played together for a year, and the young players will have more confidence being regulars in the first team.

I really do feel Keano has brought a winning mentality to team, BIG time player, who i feel has driven the team forward, since becoming fully fit. The guys a WINNER. And constructive criticism during games, essentially to make the younger players better in the future.

    Just my opinion.

If you look at the way the team have being playing for most of the season you'll find it's been 4-2-4 at least at some points in the games.

To me it looks like when attacking WGS wants both Maloney and Nakamura or one of to play wide just behind the strikers and the full-backs to push up; when defending Maloney and Naka are wide midfielders and the full backs in a flat back four.

At the weekend when Hartson came off I don't believe Petrov moved up front. At least for the first 10 minutes anyway he seemed to play as a (very) attacking midfield player in a midfield five with Zurawski up front himself a lot - with Petrov's movement this allowed him to be up front when attacking and track back when not.
That's my perspective on it anyway.

I still don't think (long-term) Keane and Lennon in the same team will work, not in a 4-4-2 anyway. Not because they are both defensive players as Keane is more than capable of creating and scoring but because in a 4-4-2 I don't think you need a holding midfielder, not in the SPL anyway. In a 3-5-2 or against tough European competition it's important to have someone soley concentrating on sweeping up in midfield, in the SPL it only slows us down and makes us less mobile. Keane can do both as can Petrov to an extent. IMO two box-to-box midfielders is the way to go in a 4-4-2.

Stan worked himself into the forward role and did indeed spend the first few minutes getting forward in support of Magic.

Roy Keane though was able to push right up by Lennon staying in the holding role.
Not saying NL should remain after the season ends but RK wouldn't be able to make such runs without adequate cover behind him.

I agree with some of your points.

I do believe that Neil Lennon, will be here next year.

Gordons 4-4-2 can be changed to a variety of formations all in the one game. In Europe away we could be 4-5-1 defending and 4-3-3 attacking with 3 central midfield players and the wide players supporting Magic.

The formation when naka came on for example, with stan just off magic, but dropping into midfield when defending.

Flexibility is the key, especially in Europe.

Mr. STRACHAN is NO MEAN SOCCER TACTICIAN...... The THREE AMIGOS made that VERY CLEAR to me... those many MONTHS AGO......

And their OBSERVATIONAL OPINION of the CELTIC MANAGER has been THOROUGHLY VINDICATED........ Remember, this was told to me... at the Initial Uptake of the STRACHAN INCUMBENCY!

And it has been VERIFIED IN SPADES!

Knowing this, I have always been confident in GORDON'S ABILITY to Turn the CELTIC SHIP,which at that time was dangerously heading for the Iceberg......

But my confidence was CAUTIONED by the POSSIBILITY that the CELTIC FAITHFUL would SOUR ON GORDON'S AFFILIATION WITH THE CELTIC CAUSE.... BEFORE he had a CHANCE TO CONVINCE The DOUBTFUL DOUBTERS......

Thankfully, that is all in the Past...

Mr. Strachan has swept away his Cavilers and Thomasinas..... were they belong...in the Dustbin of Lost CAUSES.

    As I Have said.........

We are Coursing, "Full Speed Ahead".......
    Destination??

    "THE SUMMER OF CELTIC"

Prepare to sit back an ENJOY!

    Hail! Hail!

    Kojo.

    Nota Bene:

The "THREE AMIGOS" referred to above are NOT Los INFIELS.....

That is a collective title ,Fargo has given to His Ex- Celtic Player, Friends.

    Euro...... Here come the CELT'S!

st.anthony..jinky is correct, that question was in Saturday's programme however the question indicated that there were only 2 Scottish managers. I think that there may have been 4 in fact and I would say that Joe Gilroy, ex Clyde, managed Valur Reykjavik in 1975 when we beat them 9-0 on aggregate.

Didn't Inter Cable Tel have a Scotsman in charge too?

In the long run I would love to see us playing a 4-3-3 the way Barca and a few others in Europe do.

One focal striker (likely Maciej) with two wide who drift between the front and midfield. At the moment we would have a choice of Nakamura, Maloney or McGeady in these roles.

What you do need for this to work however is a very mobile middle three who can all tackle and pass the ball. With Keane holding we currently have Pearson and Petrov who fit this mould.

However the real area we would need to bolster to even consider this formation would be the full backs. They are required to be almost perfect readers of the game as they will need to support midfield when the wide forwards push up, but be constantly ready to cover their space. Wilson once he's on the right perhaps, but another couple brought in the summer wouldn't go amiss.

A generation is roughly twenty years.

The time it takes one genratation to father the next.

I go with then rule that 'my generation' is anybody born ten years either side of myself. On the whole that tends to work quite well.

Twenty years of dominance is highly unlikely, although another 9 in a row would be nice.

Just watched the first half of Wigan - Manure.

Observations: Wigan fans singing the Billy Boys (paraphrased I assume). When we couple this to Liverpools adaptation of "The streets of Anfield Road", then there is virtually no chance that UEFA will ever prosecute a set of fans who apparently sing similar ditties - even if the words are different. Let's face it would you expect a Belgian / Swiss / Italian observer to understand the finer points of a song from the terraces.

    It will never happen.

In my opinion, parochial Scottish legislation assists in perpetuating Sectarianism. Why not try ignoring it or laughing it off?

And when they're at it they should reconsider their attitudes to sex, drugs and rock'n'roll.

With a bit of French laissez-faire and a sprinkling of Dutch liberalism Scottish football could be so much better.

Maybe then we could concentrate on the football.

The ball is round/leagarrow, as CelticBhoy said, I also thought Petrov was a Barnes signing, though I recently discovered (from an impeccable source) that he was lined up by Dr Jo.

CelticBhoy, ‘negos’ are underway with McManus, a deal is expected to be announced soon.

Kojo, Gordon Strachan has those precious two components that a successful manager needs at Celtic.

He will do very well next season in Europe.

Celticbhoy :- For the purposes of debate I would say 15 years, with domination consisting of 11 + titles plus a good hall of cups in that period, different trophy haul but from a previous posting I know that under the parameters I've set it's very rarely done.

However after looking at Le Monde front and back pages and L’Equipe (Sports paper) neither carry the story on the FRONT PAGE or in fact on any page. I also checked out Yahoo France. Guess what? On the sport section it did not make Les Top des articles……Weird.

I guess I don’t have that same journalistic vigour to get to the truth as the venerable Darrell Ming(ing) as I failed to uncover the same data he was so easily able to get his hands on. Hats off to the better man ……..Still Darrell I wonder what pages it was splashed over En France though. Could you help if you are reading?

George Wood is also correct so that goes to show you what I know !

So the answer was 4 rather than 3.

McManus has shown this season he can live with the pressure of being a Celtic player. Something Caldwell will have to learn/deal with next season.
McManus next to a good cenre half, like Balde, and with the leadership of Keane, to learn from will hopefully go on improving his overall game.
However I would still say he has to be Young Player of the Year!

    So Paul...

Have any of your sources had anything to say on Le Guen joining our friends across the City?

By all accounts it seems to be a done deal now. If so, how do you plan to put a negative spin on the deal?

We all know that if Le Guen comes in and wins the league for Rangers next season that our board will face a lot of criticism for going for the so-called "cheap" or "unambitious" option in Gordon Strachan as manager, while David Murray has gone out and seems to have secured one of the most respected coaches in Europe.

Sorry to sound like a Daily Record journo here, but Le Guen to Ibrox would undoubtedly be a massive coup for Murray and Rangers.

I believe the reason magic and stan get on so well is that Petrov fully understood the initial difficulties the 2 poles would have arriving in a new country.Magic has thanked Stan for using so much of his own time helping both of them with simple things like how to go about buying a house and setting up bank accounts etc. Things the club should really be doing!

However, this is were the obvious bond began I believe.

He's a wonderful finisher, he rarely misses an opportunity when in a decent position.

I don't think he'd be as good with his back to a player though, so i think he's best playing just off the striker between the midfield and striker that way his running can be most effective.

So far, you are one of the Handful of readers, who have found fault, with ONE of his speculations.

And really, it is fair to say that his prediction was merely, speculation.

That being said, it borders on the persnickety, in choosing this mere speculative prognostication, as a subject for complaint.

    Loosen up,man.

It was obvious to long time subscribers on this site, that Paul was engaging in what is known as, "swinging the lead"
How could anyone, make a firm assertion of just whom Mr. Murray , had in his Managerial sights?

Please take this friendly reply in the spirit that it is intended.

My favourite Bobby Tait, and symbiotically, favourite SFA moment, was the SFA's granting of Mr Tait's wish to referee his last ever game at Ibrox "coincidentally", in Rangers last home game of their 10 in a row to be season !

With Rangers drawing 1-1 with Kilmarnock, desperatley needing a win, he played about 50 minutes of injury time, only for Killie to run up the park in the 46th minute knocking one in to beat them 2-1!!

This game was given to Tait "for service to Scottish football". A crucial game in which there was no come back for a guy with nothing to lose and everything to win.

Two words for anyone moaning about Celtic being 13 points clear, Bobby Tait. Ok, another two. Henrik and Harald.

Kingoh, I've never understood why clubs don't employ someone to help foreign players arrange things like house purchases, bank accounts, plumbers and all the other little things that are often the proverbial nightmare to organise in a foreign country. I once read that with South American players in particular, this is the biggest mistake that British clubs make - the South Americans are used to having everything taken care of whilst they focus on their football. Perhaps this partly explains why our two Brazilians flopped so badly.

    Hi Trusty

I am an avid reader of this site and enjoy it very much but I think it sometimes falls into being a newspaper with the very informative articles and comments posted and as such leaves itself open to constuctive criticism when it drops below the normal high standards it attains. The decision by Paul to go with a headline an article which suggested Roberts as the next Rangers manager was, for me, a 'Red Top' approach to sensentionalism or stupidity (we now even have adverts, which is not a problem for me, but it does bring the site closer to commercialism).

The fact that I might be one of the few to complain does not worry me a jot. As GB Shaw once said

" The reasonable man adjusts to the world around him, the unreasonable man expects the world to adjust for him. That is why progress is only achieved by the unreasonable man".

"Swinging the lead" is a well known method of working in the tabloid world when they cannot come up with a properly researched story. I just do not want the high standards on this site to drop.

Many in the media world were able to correctly predict that Le Guen was THE man, it's a pity that this Celtic site went with Roberts.

No hard feelings but don't knock the guys who do not want standards to drop.

    Hail, Hail

    Celticlover,

You accuse Paul of speculation and then state that Paul Le Guen is going to Rangers, what do you base this fact on baring in mind this FACT has not been confirmed by either Rangers or LeGuen.

The newspapers have got most people talking about PLG as if he was Rangers saviour, while in fact he is relatively unproven. Jacques Santini built the Lyon team and Paul Le Guen continued that success as has Gérard Houllier (who was not an outstanding success at Liverpool).

PLG quit for no good reason at the end of last season and failed to secure a post for this campaign, keeping himself in the limelight by talking to Rangers has did him no harm (being linked with Real Madrid and his National team). The challenge at Rangers is very different from Lyon, he must build a team capable of being Champions in Scotland and challenging in Europe to be regardsed as successful

If this appointment was the panacea for Rangers and/or PLG it would have happened a long time ago. Rangers have a lame duck manager with rumours he is going to Sunderland and speculation that he will be replaced by LeGuen, hardly ideal set up as they prepare to play their most important game of a generation.

I don’t know if he was working on an inside tip (which are often less accurate than the Red Tops) but if Paul highlights the incongruence in the statements surreptitiously emanating from the MINT to the laptop loyal by running the Roberts idea up the flag pole IMO so be it.

Paul, 10 years in the coaching staff deserves respect, especially as no gossip is loosely spoken. I don’t know who you know and likewise you with me, I think we'll leave it at that.

I've seen Dr Jo as a bit of a player ever since Doug Ellis stated on a radio interview that Dr Jo was Aston Villa's scout in Eastern Europe. This was not long after he left Celtic as manager and was supposed to be doing this role for Celtic. More than one paymaster (probably umpteen others) and no return for Celtic or Aston Villa for that matter, unless he is taking the credit for Baros move from Liverpool to Villa. 8-)

Petrov and Petkov were actively touted around Europe by their agent. If the first call by the agent was received by Dr Jo in the last days of his tenure, it does not constitute an id in my book. Both had trials at Celtic and it was touch and go whether any would be signed.

John Barnes after much deliberation (unlike video's of Scheidt) signed Stilian Petrov and mentioned the friendly with England as when he first caught his eye.

To be someone’s "prodigy", my perception is you have to have worked with them in some way. This may not be 100% literally correct, but is a common understanding.

    Morning all
Was unable to reply to a few comments about teatime last night over the super pub debate. By the way by Superpub I mean one with a capacity in excess of 500.

The Amsterdam Arena - Separate Country, different rules/culture. Also the Arena is a multi-use facility with concerts & exhibitions etc. Therefore a greater demand for a superpub.

Frankiebhoy 4.53 I was at Fulham in the Cottage End by the Player's Tunnel and there was no drink available where I was. That day I was on the session as well so a few beers then wouldn't have gone a miss. I also didn't see any drink for sale in the concourse below the stand. If you got some then you lucky so and so...

At the WalkerBowl on the following Tuesday, there was certainly no drink in our end and yet there was certainly drink available in the Home End. Boss told me as he is a Foxes season ticket holder.

At Bolton, Anfield and St. James's Park there was no drink available in our end and yet it was clearly on the menus above the kiosks!!??!!!

Made me think that Strathclyde's finest had put a ban on the clubs selling it to us. I don't know for sure but will let you know what happens at the Ricoh.

The granting of licenses would be a problem IMO. If the Scottish Exec won't allow it at Murrayfield why would they allow it at CP? In this day and age when the Scottish Exec is attempting to associate sport with healthy living I wonder if that would be sending out the right message.

I just feel that a wider development of the surrounding area with community facilities would be more beneficial to the club. A mixed use development of residential and commercial facilities attached to any development with an arena for the proposed Commonwealth Games bid would prove far more beneficial to us. If PL just went to the City Council and said let me build 2 stand alone bars I don't think he would get very far in this climate.

If it was through this sort of redevelopment of the area, the chances of a superpub being put in place would be better.

Improvements to the London Road Supporters Club in terms of design and facilities could be a short term measure to improve access to a pint before and after the game.

    Yours
    Baldy

Paul67, I didn't want to post yesterday as I hope you will be able to reply.

I think you're very hasty with your assertations. 'Kenny Miller and Magic upfront', 'Hartson to be used sparingly'.

Strachan has vehemently supported Hartson and stressed numerous times he IS part of the plans.

Movement and pace are all weel and good but are not the sole attributes of a good striker! Think Harald Brattback! All the pace in the world and couldn't finish his dinner(at Celtic anyway).

John Hartson has one of the best eyes for goal in the business and thats a fact! He has been prolific for us and has scored more than Kenny Miller (arguably playing in a lesser league) this season.

This season his knockdowns and flick-ons have been sensational and its this style of play that allows the pacier players to run off- similar to Sutton in the days when he could thread a pass through the eye of a needle with his back to the goal for the on coming Larsson.

I just think Hatson has at least another season as top scorer (or second to Magic) in the SPL he has too much to offer to be dropped.

one minor problem with playing miller and magic up front. neither of them has hartson's aerial ability. playing with these two would make us pretty one-dimensional. all the opposition would need to do is sit deep and not leave any space behind so that we are forced to go wide and cross balls in that miller and zurawski are unlikely to win. just a theory...

Whether Le Guen comes or not (and I'm still dubious - look out for a Walter Smith/John Brown double act!), it will matter not a jot if he does not have substantial funds available to rebuild a failing squad.
And with a revaluation of Ibrox and Murray Park due this June, around £60million could be wiped off the Rangers balance sheet at a stroke.
The Mint has already cautioned Rangers fans that trading in the next six months may be difficult. So what is his masterplan? Do any insiders have a scooby-doo as to how Britain's greatest living entrepreneur can haul Scotland's second most important institution from the brink of insolvency towards the heady heights of European and world domination which such ubermenschen regard as their birthright?
Incidentally, any revaluation will also hit the MIH accounts hard, given that they were kept afloat by that £120million plus £68m of "goodwill" related to the transfer of RFC back into the group fold.
Anyone got a clue what's going on behind the smoke and mirrors?

Petrov can't play wide right is a current Celtic myth.

How many times have we said Petrov's had a great game but how much better could he have been if he played in his natural position in the centre instead of wide right, acknowledging that he had a decent game wide right.

Wide right, especially in a Strachan team, gives him licence to roam and this suits Petrov and suits the team.

I think his natural position is central midfield but I don't believe his partnership with Lennon did him any favours. When playing with Lenny the opposition knew Petrov would be the attacking one and could concentrate on him solely making it harder for Petrov to escape the notices of the opposition.

He would be better in a partnership with Keane as the both of them could compliment each other with one attacking and one sitting dependant on who was in the better position to take advantage.

However, just because I believe that it is his best position in the centre it doesn't mean I object to him playing wide right as I believe he can do a job there dependant on who is playing in the other positions.

I actually believe at the moment our best midfield would be Petrov wide right, Maloney wide left with Keane and Naka in the middle. Naka needs to be in the middle and I can understand the arguments that he isn't strong enough yet but Naka wide right doesn't work for us in the majority of games. (Every away game and some home games)

Petrov up front is another matter and I don't believe it is a good position for him. I believe Saturday's expirement was more longer term than just trying to get the three points. I believe that given that Strachan's midfield is quite forward thinking then in Europe this pose us problems. Therefore when the need arises a midfield five might be deployed with Petrov being just behind the striker.

If we would have drawn 0-0 on Saturday everyone would have said Strachan's at fault for playing Stan up front and why did we buy Dublin. Petrov scores and everyone says it was a master stroke. Somewhere in between is true reflection early doors although Strachan must take credit for working at Petrov up front for weeks now.

Regarding this being the first time Petrov has played up front. Did he not play up front against Barca and Rangers when we had injury problems?

Also for those saying he cannot be moved from the centre. Remember a time when we were playing tremendous football against Anderlecht and Lyon at home and Petrov was actually playing wide left with Miller wide right. (Just thinking about it, did the team not go downhill after Miller announced his pre-contract with Man Utd)

Regarding Hartson then I know he has been looking at accomodation in Glasgow and has knocked back deals where the minimum lease agreement was longer than 6 months. Doesn't mean he is going but does mean that he thinks there is a strong possibility. Regarding him being used sparingly then I have no doubts that he will be if still here. Miller and Zurawski will be the front pairing and this season when everyone was fit the first choice pairing was Beattie and Magic and Hartson has only been playing as first choice since Beattie and/or Magic have been injured.

Saw Petrov interviewed after the Dunfermline match. He was asked if he was unhappy about being asked to move to the right side once more. He said that that wasn't the case and that his instructions from Strachan were to roam wherever it hurt the opposition. That could sometimes find him right sometimes in the centre and sometimes as with his goal in the left striking position.

Paul67: “We should be in no doubt that Rangers managerial targets will be as high quality as his footballer targets were in July. Graham Roberts is 'Plan B'.”

…or a couple of large spoonfuls of the “Big C” to stimulate debate on the Blog?

For the record my own uninformed, idle speculation remains that Billy Davies will be the next r@ngers manager. Or should that be Walter or Craig with Coisty and Durranty???

However, if the reports from France are indeed true and it is to be Paul Le Guen for the darkness, then I am relaxed. I would be more concerned about a committed and talented UK manager, or someone in the mould of Wim Jansen or Gus Hiddink, taking the tiller at SS Dignity.

Will Le Guen be a Santini at Spurs or an Arsene at Arsenal? I will speculate that unless PLG gets significant funds for several new and capable players then his appointment will result in an unsuccessful clash of cultures. And even with significant funds, that culture shock may be too much to overcome.

But to my main point: if Le Guen is green [sic] for go (or should that be an ambler gambler?), does this signal that a major new financial investment is coming into r@ngers? It doesn’t seem to make much business sense, but this is Scotland and about the preservation of the establishment club and all that that entails.

Will Celtic need to respond to meet the challenge of ‘New R@ngers’?

Or is it idle speculation and minted spin until we actually see what happens?

    I blame New Labour ;-)

IMHO we have nothing to fear from the appointment of PLG at Ibrox. The pressure will all be
on him to prove himself and same goes for any signings he makes. What he has achieved in the
past is exactly that, HIS PAST. There is no guarantee comes with Le Guen. He will be dealing
with a completely new set of circumstances for the first time in his career. Let's wait and see
what his budget is to be. For this, as Paul alludes to, is a better indicator of the challenge we will
face than solely the appointment of a new manager.
Assuming GS goes on to win the league from this position and hopefully the CIS cup also. We will
be the ones in a commanding position and I repeat the pressure will all be on Le Guen for next season.

Also this is now the time to get solidly behind GS. If he delivers us a double in spite of some of the deranged
ramblings of the media and some of our own fans. Then he will have shown the commitment to
our cause and we as fans should start to reciprocate this by showing our support for him.

I can see the headlines already, " Strachan mauls the Gaul".

This is not an anti Paul comment, it is only a request that Paul remains vigilant against the temptations which are everywhere within the media world. The quality press editors demand substantiated reports not whimsical ones. They are the prerogative of the Red Tops.

Re, the comment about GB Shaw's view on life may I suggest a few moments reading "Let The People Think" by Bertrand Russell and then some contemplation.

    Hail,Hail

It was my understanding that the RICS criteria concerning property valuation was not to change until 2007, therefore the mints valuation would not be affected until the next valuation period affected by these changes - 2009

The idea of a singing section at the stadium is a great one. The suggestions on here yesterday by the likes of Rumoid and Martinobhoy were great. Does anyone remember that some Barça fans were trying to get people more animated a few years ago in the Camp Nou and they had a section called Almogávares??? I don´t know if it was successful or if there are any ideas that we can transport from there to Ice Breaker Scotland.

We definitely need new songs for the new heroes. Maybe we can adapt a few tunes from our rich repertoire and dedicate them to the new lhads.

    For example
Harry - Harry, Harry - Harry,
    Heh ey ey Harry Hood

    change to

    NAKA-MURA..........NAKA-MURA
    HEH EH EH NAKA-MURA

    or

To the rising crescendo around the stadium of
    OOOOOOOH Dixie, Dixie.
    Dixie, Dixie, Dixie, Dixie,
    Dixie Deans

    Change to OOOOOOOH SHAUN MALONEY
    SHAUNY, SHAUNY, SHAUNY, SHAUNY, MA-LO-NEY

To the famous whistled tune in Bridge over the river kwai.

LENNON, THE CAPTAIN OF OUR TEAM,
LENNON, OUR CAPTAIN IN THE GREEN,
LENNY, OUR DEAR OLD LENNY, OUR DEAR OLD CAPTAIN IN THE GREEN.

To the sound of Rock 'n' Roll parts 1 or 2

    ROCKIN' ROY HEH,
    ROCKIN' ROY,
    ROCKIN' ROY HEH,
    ROCKIN' ROY,

The "you're fourth in the SPL" chant made it so why not!!

    Rintimtim,
First the Celtic fans get pelters for singing Irish songs, now you want to have us adapting Gary Glitter chants!
    (;-0)
How about, to the theme tune of the cartoon Stop The Pigeon:

"Nakamura, Nakamura, Nakamura, Nakamura, Nakamura, Nakamura, Nakamura, Wow!"

The Paul Le Goon - Graham roberts debate - last night on radio phone in Spewan cameroon Roberts phoned up and during the convo stated he had been offered a lift in a private jet to go and see the game. Coincedence who owns private jets in his neck of the woods. Just a thought.

    Celticlover,

Obviously I can’t speak for Paul and he was unequivocal about his expectation that Roberts would replace ECK I’m sure if he wants to he’ll reply.

I have two bug bears, the fact that MINT can nonchalantly churn out (dis)information and it is excepted and spun to maximum effect, if (as in the majority of cases), the reports turn out to be inaccurate the matter is quietly dropped!

Secondly the way it is excepted by people who should know better i.e. By A McLeish who should walk away and keep some dignity, the broadsheets and Celtic fans who should be able to see through this.

If you are saying that you have confirmation that Paul Le Guen will be appointed Rangers manager so be it – apologies for believing you were acting on press speculation!

I'll believe it when I see him in the Dug oot.

Paul67 mentioned yesterday on CQN that he has some commitments that won't give him much time to follow CQN this week, so he likely wont be able to post much, if any.

I've got a big confession to make. I've never heard of Paul le Guen. Or rather before I stumbled across this blog in the summer I'd never heard of him. I've been actively watching football now for 35 or 36 years and in that time the name Paul le Guen never registered. This might be down to general ignorance, but in my defence I was a big fan of Lacombe, the general manager of Lyon, in his playing days and I was quite impressed by the Lyon team he helped build last time we played them. But le Guen? Never registered. Still, I guess that's what wikipedia is for. It could be that he's as good as people think/fear, but for me it's a case of "Sorry, never heard of him", which is the response any jubilant hun is going to get from me. Guess it'll make a nice change from going up to Jambos and saying "I haven't been following the football lately. Are you guys still top of the league?" (try it, you'll like it)
