well done paddybhoy.
addin from the celtic official site.
"And it reinforces Celtic’s strategy of investing the money made from all of its commercial operations back into the football team.
Celtic’s Commercial Director David Thomson said: “The money the club makes from its numerous operations, including our hugely successful retail division, is invested back into the football team.
“Our supporters know that by buying direct from the club that the money remains with Celtic and they will see the benefits of that on the park.”
oh what a dig in the ribs, get in there.
win on sunday, its all over. get the party hats out, cos its gonna be a big rolling party till may this year.

In the tour de France the Lanterne Rouge is the rider in last position
and maybe we should introduce something similar for those who post at the end of the previous thread only to find that Paul has posted a new article.
Anyways, any truth in the claim on BBC that comic legend John Cleese is a Bhoy?

Good to see Mc Manus signed up, undoubtedly most improved player for the season and now we have to sign up wee Shaun

Following on from the last article you're right. If Arsenal win they would qualify automatically, and the 4th placed team drops into the Uefa Cup.

If TFOD lose tomorrow to Kilhuns would anyone be happy if we lose to hibs?
-
Me...
I know it's bad but I'd give points to Hibs AND (maybeeee) Hearts just to see Rangers not even have a chance of being in Europe!
-
I would dumbhoy.
As much as I hate them I hate seeing us losing more. Even though it might mean them not qulaifying i would still prefer our victory. Also WGS needs victories, only 2 games lost out of 28 but still needs to win over a fair bit of our support. So a Victory for us is the only result for me!
-
-
I'm certain WGS would be upset to hear those views and I'm 100% behind him. We must keep the momentum going, we haven't won anything yet!
Let Hearts and Hibs sort out winning their games without our help. We've only got another 3 or 4 games to win and we are Champions. After that we can bring on some of the young lads and if we happen to drop a few points in doing so, what does it matter. Lets have no more of that kind of talk.

Wheres Pablo and Noel today?
I know Pablo was celebrating his new blog but they can't possibly still be on the swally, can they:-)

In that case I´m claiming two red torches from the last two threads. Such is the appeal of CQN threads that there is getting to be quite a bit of merriment going on even after Paul has posted a new article, a bit like a virtual lock in!

Maybe shooting myself in the foot here, but I don't like to see us lose points to anyone, at anytime.
Yes, I know it might be for the greater good, but still..........

Lets forget TFOD with regards Europe
If they get second spot then so be it.
Surely the only thing that matters is that we do our part and be happy that we are in such a strong position given the horrendous start we had.
Getting straight in to the CL qualifyers would be just perfect and let us do some serious planning during the summer and as a wee bonus allow us to give Naka, Artur and Majiec some extra time off after the World Cup
Whoever from Scotland is going in to the CL qualifyers is not our issue or concern.
-
Sorry - but I have to say this...
Daily Record, just what the f*** are they on? "Day Two of our great series on the new boss at Ibrox, Paul Le Guen"
Have I been on Mars recently and missed it? Has he actually came and categorically confirmed he's actually signed on at Dignity FC, and I and no doubt the rest of the world missed it?
This is supposed to be a newspaper! They are supposed to print the news, but instead print this bulls*** based on pure speculation and conjecture! How stupid are they gonna look if, shock and horror, Le Guen gives the Hun the same treatment he's given half of Europe?
I know this ain't the place or the time, but not living in Scotland for a good seven years now, you kinda forget just how bad a "newspaper" (and I use the term newspaper loosely) can be... quite ridiculous. I check their online version very infrequently and come across this today. What a joke. Number One for Scottish Sport? If that's indeed true, I sincerely pity the newspaper buying publuc back home...

Nah! 3 points for Celtic against my local team on Sunday for me. Hibs have a fairly easy run up to the split then will play Rangers at Easter Road after the split while Rangers still have to go to Tynecastle and Tannadice before the split.
Plenty of time for the Hibees to make up any points they (hopefully) lose this weekend.

There are many strident detractors of the laptops on this site - and I count mysef as one.
But part of the problem is the journalists (term used loosely) feediong off the negativity of the Celtic support. This season has been magnfied with the almost desire to see WGS fail compounded by the debacles in Bratislava and Cumbernauld.
However, surely on the back of some of the best footballing displays from the Tic and the continued implosion of our nearest and also our greatest rivals surely it is time for everybody to get behind the team and more particularly the manager.
We should never follow blindly but we should also always get behind the clause.
Would it not also be a nice touch after last year to have Brian Quinn receive the league trophy?

lifted this off another site. Anybody know the story behind this?
Football legend Jimmy Johnstone has been left "devastated" after being denied a new drug that could save his life.
The former Celtic and Scotland winger is suffering from motor neurone disease but was refused a treatment for "ethical reasons".Now Jinky is praying the decision by the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow will be overturned.
Johnstone, 61, was diagnosed as suffering from the killer condition in 2002.Since then the Parkhead great has worked to raise awareness of the disease. He recently discovered that a drug called Copaxone has been used successfully to treat sufferers in the USA.However, doctors here refused to prescribe it to him.
Close pal Ian Henderson said: "It's a well tolerated drug which has been used successfully to treat people with multiple sclerosis. We know the two illnesses aren't that closely related but they tried it on 30 patients with MND and it showed very positive results.
"We applied to the Southern General but they replied saying that they couldn't provide the drug "on ethical grounds" - which usually means money. Frustration doesn't come into it - Jimmy is devastated."
"However, we believe a large-scale trial is planned and so we have re-applied. We do appreciate that hospitals are concerned that drugs can have side-effects but Jimmy is prepared to sign any waiver they like."
"He's said he's quite happy to become a guinea pig because others might benefit even if he doesn't."

Here's a question that will never get asked of Gordon at one of these press conferences:
David Murray is selling off more of the family silver to raise much needed cash and chasing a highly respected coach like Paul Le Guen.
Is it a clear indication of how well Celtic is being run and also a compliment to the job Gordon Strachan is doing with the Celtic players that David Murray has to take these measures in order to try to close the gap between the two clubs?

rio-Copaxone has a licence in the UK for use in MS,in certain patients only[hospitals only].
It is given daily by injection, each injection costs approx.£20,so a months treatment would be £560,and to treat 10 patients for a year would be £56,000 in drug costs alone.
What is in the drugs'favour is if it prevents an acute relapse savings would be made in the costs of treating the relapse.
Unfortunately for Jinky he does not have MS but another neurological condition, which is steadily progressive rather than characterised by relapses/remissions.
MS patients with the progressive type of MS will not be getting Copaxone, either.
The Health board may say that an expensive,so far unproven treatmentfor MND[in the UK,anyway]should be reserved for those diseases[MS] in whom a definite benefit has been shown.
As previously mentioned in this thread money rules, especially in the NHS.

Paul, as with some other posters on the blog, I am finding the refresh time span to be between 30-40 seconds irregardless of the length of thread. This has been prevalent for the last 24-36 hours !!!!!!!!! Don't know if you can, or would want to look into this?
I would urge ALL readers to take the time to listen to the Neil Lennon video............. He also fits the profile of one of the PRIVILEGED few............a fhan who wore the hoops.
I would hereby like to propose NEIL LENNON as the first recipient of a CQN KNIGHTHOOD. The man is a legend when all his problems on and off the park are taken into consideration................Lesser individuals would have walked a long time ago, no matter what their remuneration or love was, for the Club.............!
I would also like to make an impassioned plea to ALL posters on this blog…………….Please stop posting ANYTHING from the press, I’m not interested, I don’t read them…………………..and I don’t CARE what’s in them !!!!!!!!!!!!! It's like watching someone hitting their head off a wall and wondering why they keep getting headaches ????????? They know YOU read them. They know they piss you off !!!!!!!!????????? And that's why they try and stir up as much controversy as they can............ It pays their mortgage, it buys their beer !!!!!!!!!!! Would you buy ANY of them a drink in the pub ????????????? Put them all on the dole.
Please desist.

What you are suggesting is that we all collectively blank the press and just talk amongst ourselves in total ignorance of what the press are saying. That will never work. Surely a large part of CQN is about opinions and debate and unfortunately what the press say is very much a part of that. Don’t get me wrong, I never buy the rags, but unsurprising have no problem with the guys that do and then come on here to tell us what's in them. Providing you don’t take any of it too seriously there absolutely no harm in that at all and you may just get the odd laugh along the way. Hail Hail.

I honestly don't know why the press in Scotland employ people to write (and I use the word loosely) their articles.
Why not just cut out the middleman and get Davros to write everything?
The result could hardly be more fawning or unquestioning, could it?

Paul67,

I have just read Derek Johnstone's Evening Times ass licking article on the great D Murray and the moonbeam. Tis a bit sickening, but....
I wonder whether we are all downplaying this a tad too much. The masterplan could work. Its true he has mortgaged yet another bit of the Ibrox business empire but he has raised cash that has been successful in enticing Le Guen to Ibrox and you have to admit that that is a major coup. Le Guen is a prize asset and we would all be over the moon if we had a vacancy - or a failing manager - and Celtic announced him as the replacement.
I for one hope his luck has run out but I know when I look in my heart that I'm just a bit scared he proves as hot as he was at Lyon. I pray they don't qualify for the CL so at least he'll only have one year at that (surely he will stay just two years then go on to a proper job).
If this throw of the dice works and we fall into the shadows then "we" will forget prudence and start to bitch coz it will hurt like hell.
Look at it from Murray's viewpoint. Facing the prospect of managing mediocrity and a downward spiralling club he has worked the numbers to fund one last chance. I agree it is not in the Huns longer term interests but....
-
»»that has been successful in enticing Le Guen to Ibrox

-
Awnawgubbed..
I believe Celtic Gordon Strachan was being bated today. Questions about Rangers “big spend” followed by a question about preferring Bosmans are loaded with all sorts of anti-Celtic sentiment.
Ignore them.
Kojo, loved the rhyme, a keeper.
I believe there will be a concerted effort to bring our good name into this particular disgrace. Scottish bodies have failed to take action on Rangers for years; they will not waste a moment jumping on Celtic the next time ONE MAN steps out of line.
Gedinte, next season’s European qualification form each country is not determined by this seasons coefficients. Only the coefficients from the five years before the immediate previous year counts.
No problem JohnM, thanks to Martin.
-
I think everyone is giving Le Guen far too much credit. Look at what he has achieved - yes he won 2 leagues in a row and did well enough in Europe - but given Lyon's standing in the game and the players at his disposal it's what, if I was a Lyon supporter, would have expected.
The man is no God - no manager is!
Di Stefano said he one the European Cup 5 (maybe 6) times with different managers, it wasn't because of the manager that he won all those times it was down to the players. A manager can only work with what he has and quite frankly at Rangers that isn't much.
They hope Le Guen (if he signs!!!) will be a MON for them - honestly, who believes MON would have achieved anywhere near what he did without Larsson? Never mind Petrov Mjallby, Moravcik, Lambert, McNamara and others.
Of Rangers squad I think the decent players and ones who might improve under new management are Burke, Buffel (luxury player), Ferguson (although I never have seen him play well once! He must be decent seeing as he was sooo over-rated... instead of being a world-beater he's decent), Ricksen (but not when he's on the booze;) or Fergiehun is in the team) and the keepers.
... not much to start off with!
-
Olderbhoy, there is always that chance. Murray is a gambler- he's down to his last fifty and he's putting it all on red. If it works, he'll be a hero...
LeGuen is a good manager I agree, but he has never had a job like the Rangers one. Previously, he inherited a good team, at an unfashionable club, had lots of cash, and made them better.
Now he has a terrible team, a bit of cash (although exactly how much remains to be seen), and is under pressure to win every game. And believe me, the crescendo will build to the first game of the season by which time BFDJ and the rest will have the Huns favourites for the CL.
Also, I expect he already has his eye on his next job.

A couple of quick points on the latest TFOD money making scam, sorry eciting piece of financial engineering.
To me it suggests that DB is carrying out a clear up operation to aid his departure and provide some funds to whoever takes over from Eck. The big question is what structure will be put in place to replace the train wreck that is currently in existence.
Main issues:
What is the true TFOD T/O?
Counting merchandising as £20mill because you have a small scale clothing line attached to the club means that the headline figure is inflated into realms where the actual football expenditure would be outclassed.
Consently what is the true football budget / total football wages?
Given the debacle during the summer the gap between the two would be £1mill max.
Are they working to a total football wages of £20mill at the moment?
Looks like it to me although the figure could actually be lower.
Debt Repayment: 2005/06
CL money is up around £12mill net which is about £8-9mill higher than the net effect of the Boumsong sale so they should be generating about £6mill in cash this season.
Usual warnings apply - Merchandising implosion, GTF money, lack of any real SC/LC action.
JJB deal:
I go for the "needing money for new blood excuse" for the majority of this. CL cashflow and the short end of this inflow should take the debt below £10mill. This I think will keep the HBOS suits happy and allow the new owners a bit of lee-way in their first years.
So I would suggest that more than EURO15mill will be handed over to PLG to buy players for next season. The main issue here which makes a mockery of the optimist quoted in the Herald is that the JJB money is a one-off, in fact the annual payments will be less than the profit TFOD currently enjoy from their merchandising efforts.
PLG: Why get involved?
He is interested only because of the money on offer for his wages and pension. Also we have the argument put forward by Paul67 in the summer that a great coach will repay his big wages in terms of improved performances due to better coaching. Also it will the only way DM will be CL competitive, Top 10 wages for the coach as nothing else about the club will be Top 10. Cheap publicity.
MIM Balance Sheet:
Will take a hit when it comes time to re-value the ground. As noted by E-Tims this morning in the weeks best joke, Ibrox will be the only piece of property to be down valued in Govan over the past 3 years. While I think it will be sore for DM's ego i think it will be possible for the MIM balalnce sheet to cope with it. Another matter will be a write down of the broadcasting rights returned from NTL. I think this will take longer to unravel and may have to be passed over to the new owners.
TFOD Future:
There have been comments about a fan takeover/trust structure. I think this will be for the football club itself. I think the grounnd and MP will be floated off in a property company with a charge being levied from the football side of things to pay for the valuation/debt included in the new company. Variation on the Sale and Leaseback option.
Where any new investor would place his money is up for grabs:
Rabblerouser = Club for new players
Church elder/TH = Ground to get the thing up and running without hobbling the football side of things.
TFOD / Next season:
Hun version of 87/88 or 97/98? I think that if PLG takes over the money will be used to pump prime an asset management regime in Govan. AW style raids on quality 20-22 yr olds from France with a view to moving them on after 3-4 years. These cost money but don't yet consume big wages. Just what you need if you are surviving on a one-off cash injection. Couple of experienced Bosman's, I repeat experienced Bosman's not bargain basement duds to help get things bedded in and you could have a reasonable team.
Consequently it will be tough for WGS and PL's piggybank. However CL qualification and some real money and we should be able to stay ahead. A certain mr RK may come into his own next season, here's hoping.
TFOD Long term:
PLG = Offski the moment a better offer appears.
T/O = Low without any merchandising padding.
Structure = DM out of the way, re-floated with reduced debt but heavy outgoings to support the exit from MIM.
Future = Under pressure but a well run ship should be able to stay competitive. However they will now be demonstrably the underdogs of the O/F.
Can their egos survuve the huge change in fortunes?
Can the country survive the fact that the "tattie howkers / bead rattlers" are in the ascendency?
Ah well we have been able to handle the fact that the FM has CFC tendencies
Consequently we live in interesting times.
-
Paul67, appreciate the Friday press conference report as usual...
Don't know if this has been raised before but, now that we're coming to the business enf of the season and CQN has been running very successfully for a good couple of seasons now - have you had any thoughts on creating an official CQN Player Of The Year award?
Don't know what criteria you could use for voting eligibility, but I'm sure you could come up with something apt.
Perhaps the winner could be invited to give you an interview, or post an article, or even give wee talk at your annual get together (although I guess most players are on international duty or holiday in July)?

Hats off to Jim Spence on radio Scotland, ably supported by Britney, not shirking the issues on the UEFA bigotry scenario. Clyde etc. so far shunning it.
Rangers Supporters Trust guy refused to condemn people chanting "Dirty Fenian b....". Some Rangers fans glad UEFA has stepped in.

Britney is getting tore into the Rangers Supporters Trust on their bigotry on 90 minutes, its great stuff

Great thought provoking analysis and very thorough.
I can't agree with it all, yet, as I need to read it again, and again.
I also have a sneaking feeling the PLG announcement will be pushed back to take the sting out of the UEFA findings. This may give him time to rethink and choose another assignment which is easier than Mission Impossible.

I'm moving from this country ASAP! How can people actually go on national radio and say "up to your knees in fenian blood" is ok to sing?!?!
The guy should be arrested!
-
Did anyone see the report on Reporting Scotland? They chatted about the reason behind it all, failed to discuss the bus incident but made sure that they got in the line about Rangers fans behaving well in general and making Spanish friends! The Rangers Supporters Trust guy was hilarious - something along the line of "I know we sing those songs, but the question is does it offend anyone? We only sing these songs in support of our team [therefore it's not offensive]." You couldn't make it up.
I'm glad this is happening, the SFA have sat on their hands for too long. However, if they're forced into action because of it, they'll also turn their attention to us, no doubts about it. The 'they're as bad as each other' argument is utter crap, but we also need to make sure we have our own house fully in order before laughing too loudly at them!
-
to be honest this hullaballoo about rangers singing their songs shows uefa up in a very bad light imho. they are only concerned about their product. when the jamboes were booing the minutes silence for pope john paul ii that made world headlines uefa stated that it was a national associtaion issue. the sfa done nothing and subsequently uefa done nothing either. if they cannot bring one of their own affiliated associations to book for that particular discrimination then we should all be aware that nothing will happen and nothing will change its just uefa looking to be seeing to do something and rangers will get a scolding instead of being put in the klink
-
Spiers is playing a absolute blinder on Radio Scotland just now.
Paul - just had a call from my mate who works with a recently downsized "broadsheet" regarding a report in an irish newspaper about Dermot's golfing buddies and an investment. Anything on the grapevine?
-
Awe Naw.
The difference of course between the Hearts incident in UEFA's eyes is that it was a one-off. UEFA have stated that Rangers are being investigated for an ongoing problem.
-
Listening to Radio Scotland too
Hats off to Graham Spiers,as Otto says he is playing a blinder.
-
David Edgar is on Radio Scotland as well - What a f*@c** fa**y
-
Why can't they see it like this...
If football supporters in Scotland or elsewhere were to sing: "We're up to our needs in Paki/Nigger/Jewish blood" (either race, religion or colour) they would all be thrown in jail.
Only anti-Catholicsm in accepted as not serious enough to worry about.
-
Really good debate between Graham Speirs and the guy from the Trust.
The Trust guy would not condemn The Billy Boys song. A street gang song sung by racists and fascists in the 1930's was regarded by him as a traditional Rangers song and therefore OK.
Speirs was unrelenting and kept putting under pressure to answer whether singing up to your knees in fenian blood was offensive.
No use mentioning the offensive behaviour of Hearts fans at the semi final last year. At that game Celtic fans then indulged in sectarian and bigoted singing Oh it's good to be a Roman Catholic and "F*** John Knox", an ex-catholic prtiest.
Are we serious about challenging all sectarian behaviour including Celtic bigots?
What about the political sectraian behaviour from some at Celtic games?
-
The Real TRUTH behind the JJB deal.

Totally agree about Celtic fans singing about John Knox. It's pointless. What is " Political Sectarian" behavior?! Isn't Politics sectarian by definition?

Just heard it on the way home.
An Irish caller said the Coolmore Mafia are regrouping for a MAJOR investment in Celtic. The guy went on to say that the investment should happen a week after the cup final(as reported in the Irish press)
He stated that Strachan,Dermot,JP, and Maginer were all playing golf recently, and the group would make an attempt to take Celtic over.
Can any of the Irish Bhoys back this up with articles from the press?
-
Hi all
This investigation by UEFA in to our rivals hooliganism and the singing of "discriminatory" songs could have major repercusions for them. IMO this is not before time and if we do have a problem the scale is much much less. You hardly here a song sung at Celtic Park and certainly not of the political or bigotted variety.
The SFA will retaliate [towards Celtic] but this should if carried out properly include Motherwell, Hearts and Kilmarnock to name just 3 of the worst culprits.
I believe the change when it comes will be harder for other clubs and fans to accept than it will the Celtic support.
It just makes you wonder what has the SFA been doing all these years.
God willing 3 points on Sunday ,my scoreline prediction Hibs 1 Celtic 3.

Rowdy Glasgow fans allowed home after paying fines
By: valencialife.net
Eight Glasgow Rangers fans appeared in a Benidorm court yesterday charged with disturbing the peace after they staged a considerable uproar in the calle Mallorca. After being led into court, faces downcast, the judge ordered that they pay a total of 16,529 Euros in fines before being allowed to leave the country. In order to ensure the fines were paid, the judge also ordered members of the National Police Force to accompany the fans to their rooms and ensure that the fines were paid.
Meanwhile another football fan was bound over to appear one week later in a Benidorm court after Ramon Martinez, the director of the Hotel President, lodged an official complaint. It would appear that the fans ripped out the taps of one of the bathrooms of the hotel, leading to the entire floor becoming awash, with water seeping to the floors below, causing around 45,000 Euros worth of damage.

Today, Alex McLeish said:
"If we hadn't done as well in Europe, I have no doubts that we would be further up the league.
"We would certainly be closer to Celtic, if not above them, and still involved in the cup."

Fantastic post.
Imagine the scenario of a local derby between an all-white South African club side playing an all-black South African club side at the home ground of the all-white ground with the fans singing
"...we're up to our needs in Kaffir blood.."
Not the image the rainbow nation would wish to present yet our nations leaders and the football establishment is more than delighted to suppress by almost all means.

To Ian in Budapest
I'm heading to Russia for a week and will have a stop off in Budapest on the way back next week. We've the whole of Sunday there so do you have any suggestions for anything to do while there (aside from going to mass)?
Thanks,
Al

And to add...
The trust spokesman believes such a scenario is OK, as they've,
"been singing it for a long time"

The alignment of PLG and marvelous moonbeam should pick them up, for sure. However too much is unknown to waste too much time speculating…though it is fun. We don’t know how much PLG can spend and will it be enough to tip the balance of power between them and Hibs.
Seriously though, we all assume a few quality replacements at Celtic in the closed season. We are building on success they will build from scratch. Davros’s old maxim can now be inverted. Now he needs to spend 10quid for every five we spend…because we are further up the curve.
He has to push hard to catch up we need to plan for significant improvement in the CL. If we can build a team to do this, Rangers will not be our concern - we will push them under as we grow in Europe.

Jimios, excellent idea on the POTY award. It would be easy enough to set up a poll. Maybe if I nominate five players and throw the vote open? Let me know what you think.
Thanks to CelticBhoy for alerting me to the fun on Radio Scotland this evening. Mr Speirs skewered them very well, or perhaps I should say they skewered themselves.
The Rangers Trust person repeatedly referred to Celtic fans. There will be a concerted effort to drag us into this shame, though Speirs was clear on the difference between Celtic Park and Ibrox.
OttoKaiser, I would be very surprised if DD’s buddies were about to invest in new share capital. No need and no whisper to that effect.
Mick, I am 100% sure your comment about a takeover is not going to happen.

MEMORY LANE GAME September 18 1982
Motherwell 0-7 Celtic
Nicholas 3 Aitken 2 McGarvey McLeod
Celtic were still in shock from their last game, a 2-2 draw with Ajax at Parkhead. Cruyff, Olsen, Molby and co had given the Celts a torrid time but the Celts would get their revenge in a fortnight.
That old foe Jock Wallace was now installed as 'well manager and a difficult game was expected. Wallace fielded a few familiar faces, Edvaldsson and Conn both popular ex - Celts, goalkeeper Sproat in his blue jersey he kept for Celtic games and a youngster called Brian McClair.
It was one of those days when Celt's clicked and Motherwell couldn't compete. The 3-0 half time lead was deserved and the second half best remembered for three special goals.
1. Aitken, relishing his midfield role, played a glorious 1-2 with Nicholas and burst clear to chip the ball over Sproat.
2. Aitken again, winning a 50-50 challenge ran from the half way line, before coolly placing the ball past the keeper.
3. Nicholas, running down the inside left channel with the ball, twice used McGarvey as a decoy before dummying the last defender and firing a high shot into the roof of the net.
Celtic fans taunted Wallace mercilessly and after being 7-0 up after 70 minutes, the Celts went easy on their opponents.
Nicholas at this time was on top form and was the darling of the Scots media. That same media interest later that same season become a circus so overwhelming that it would be partially responsible for Celts throwing away the league title.

Ok Paul,
Thought it was too good to be true.
Though how good wood it be to stuff the moonbeam right up his bahookie!

Finally recovered from my N.D.E. on Tuesday night.(At the final whistle I felt like Malcolm In the Middle in that episode where he is hospitalised and the doctor tells him he has the stress levels of a sixty year old air traffic controller ....)
A little bit of nonsense now...A Celtic Moonbeam if you like...... well it is Friday.......
In the kitchen earlier, cooking and listening to the radio phone ins. (I know, I know, but I'm only playing Spot The C.Q.N.r....Honest) Anyway, this Irish guy phones in and ruins Ewan Cameron's weekend by telling him that (stop me if you've heard this already) he has "Very good contacts in Ireland" and "High up in Celtic Park" and that Dermot Desmond has linked up with Magnier and McManus and they are all about to join forces and pour "Many, many millions of pounds" into Celtic Football Club.... An announcement will be made the day after the C.I.S. cup final....Oh and Gordon Strachan has been off playing golf with the three of them.......

I'm with you. Compared to Rangers we hardly have a problem.
But let's not get complacent and Celtic fans would do better to sort our small problem than gloat over Rangers'.
A one game ban for the use of Ibrox in Europe to follow. And PLG, if he is coming, is put in an interesting position for his first press conference.
UEFA need to be asked about the response by Rangers Football Club to events in the San Siro when the same discriminatory chants were heard from the official party at a Champions League fixture.
Finally UEFA are taking action over the two Villareal games due to discriminatory chants, the question must now be asked of the SFA and SPL as to what action they are taking against such chants.
That's why we have to put our efforts into getting rid of any and all sectarian chants from Celtic fans including calling McLeish a sad orange bastard. We have had people on this site use the same excuse about such language as the guy fron the Rangers Trust was using.
I think it is now right on the money that the media are discussing the culture of Scottish football fans and the language they use. The Rangers Trust spokesperson is left crawling around 'prevaricating" about the words Fenian bastard as if there was some use of those words that was acceptable. Then he argues that education has a lot to offer here.
Credit to Graham Speirs who has done a lot of positive work in this area but was left out to dry by Murray and folk like Jim Traynor, though a strange silence from Nil By mouth.
Similar for Celtic unacceptable songs include
"North men, South men ..."
"Cheer Up Alex McLeish ..."
"Roamin' in the gloaming ..."
I'd add in the Catholic triumphalism that mirrors to a degree We are the people from the Rangers fans.
This inlcudes Oh it's good to be a Roman Catholic and religious inserts to the singing of the Irish national anthem and the Fields of Athenrye.
Just while we are on about the singing.
I mean while I am on about the singing. Happy Birthday to the Jungle Bhoys.
Anyone got a theory why we do have as many songs about the players as we had in the 80's and 90's. Then, before the start of the game the fans would sing an individual song about most of the players and be applauded by each in return. In the 60/70s there was a song that went right through the whole team though in those days it was one to eleven.
We'e got Ronnie Simpson number one,
We've got the best team in the land
We've got Jim Craig number two
We've got the best team in the land
These days we could be going up to number 43 or something.
I do think we should ask the Celtic Trust as to whether or not they condemn people singing up to our knees in Fenian blood.
A Rangers fans called Edward had emailed in to the BBC tonight to talk in enlightened tones about opposing sectarianism. I wonder if it was our Rangers Fan.
Good night and good luck.

NOEL;
What have Boston United ever done to you?
-
Evening all,
Been a strange old week on the other side of the city. Their fans undoubtedly disgrace themselves on their travels yet again but this is given limited coverage in the Scottish press. The singing of sectarian R*****s songs (are there any other kind?) is finally noticed by someone. And to top it all off David Murray appears to be making the Advocaat mistakes all over again.
Having grown up in the West of Scotland and having been a Catholic in a 99.9% Protestant school, I can honestly say that I know the words to several sectarian R*****s songs and I could not even give the title of a R*****s song which doesn't have some element of FTP, fenian blood or Orange Order in it. (Just to clarify I know the words because the songs were sung at me for years. Compare it with knowing the words to a Bhoyzone song except less noble!)
The press are obviously reluctant to be too critical of an organisation which has a great deal of control over Scottish society. The line that "they're both as bad as each other" can only be taken so far. We have unsavoury elements of our own support but we are surely on a different scale to the incessant anti-catholic hatred coming out of Ibrox.
Rangers have paid lip service to tackling the problem while issuing orange away tops and playing flute and drum music over the tannoy. UEFA are taking stesp which the SFA or the Scottish Executive should have taken years ago.
Fergus McCann cleaned up the atmosphere at Celtic Park, David Murray knew that to do the same at Ibrox could cost him money so did very little. Signing a catholic in 1990 to break an archaic transfer policy was a bold and overdue move but akin to praising a bank robber for stopping stealing. I feel some chckens have come home to roost tonight.
As for the JJB deal it does seem to me that Murray is placing a great deal of faith in a largely untested manager who appears unwilling to give the club any level of commitment. Has Murray been hibernating through football's financial meltdown? Signing big name players on big wages for big transfer fees won't work in a small league with small tv income. Another Advocaat style spending spree could see Rangers in serious financial problems, that's if they have not reached that milestone already.
I am still wary of endorsing Paul's generation of dominance theory but he must be wearing a very smug grin this week!

Thought that this might be of interest to some of you considering UEFA's investigation into Rangers party anthems. I've been contacting UEFA and anti-racist groups for years about the huns racism and sectarianism but unless Celtic fans complain about this to groups such as Kick It Out (info@kickitout.org) or UEFA instead of moaning about it on websites then nothing will ever change. KIO and UEFA have taken issue with Rangers about this before but need more evidence (ie fans contacting them) to validate their complaint. You are never going to get the scottish media to highlight this as most of them are huns anyway. Even after all the accolades we have got from Seville and our travels in Europe the Laptop Loyal still have the audacity to tar us to the huns bigoted brush and use the hackneyed "Old Firm" excuse every time huns go on the rampage, which is not only wrong, it is dangerous because it fails to address the real problem (ie most sectarian attacks are commited by huns, Nil By Mouth will attest to that), we are guilty by association! I contact UEFA every time the huns play in Europe because their "Hello! Hello!" song is in direct contravention of UEFA guidelines regarding unacceptable chants at football matches. UEFA's guidelines on chants, as given to me by Patrick Gasser, Assistance Programmes at UEFA, who KIO deal with regarding racism, are as follows "UEFA opposes all sorts of racist chants, including sectarian chants. Its statutes Article 2b) read as follows:"The objectives of UEFA shall be:...to promote football in Europe in a spirit of peace, understanding and fair play, without any discrimination as to politics, gender, religion or race" furthermore, Point 2 of UEFA's Ten-point Plan of Action suggests making public address announcements condemning racist chants at matches. "Being up to our knees in Fenian blood" is hardly supporting "peace, understanding and fair play" is it and I reckon if enough people draw attention to UEFA about this, they will act on it, which if they do puts the masonic lodge sports department in an awkward position because how can they deem these hun chants acceptable when UEFA doesn't? Contacting UEFA and KIO is the only way to address the sectarian and racist bile that oozes from the Theatre for the Eternally Damned because lets face it no one in the scottish media or sfa is going to do anything about it but if enough people complain then UEFA and KIO will address it - CQN it is up to us! I do a lot of stuff for human rights groups such as Amnesty International and Free Tibet Campaign and its amazing what you can achieve if you put your mind to it. Free Tibet groups managed to shut down the World Bank computers and fax machines because so many emails and faxes were sent, which definately got noticed and made them stop funding some Chinese projects in Tibet. Now I can assure you that there are a hell of a lot more Celtic fans out there than Free Tibet campaigners, so imagine what a load of the bhoys could do... Bigotry and racism are wrong and you either condemn them with your words and your actions or you condone them with your silence and indifference, so if you would like to contact UEFA to condemn these sectarian songs then write to this address;

As others have already posted, rumours about Graham Spiers' demise are seriosly exageterated. You can still listen to his utter fisting of the ridiculous David Edgar of the equally ridiculous Rangers Supporters Trust if you go to the Radio Scotland site and click on 90 Minutes FRI.
I was particularly interested in the interview with Alec McLeish (who I have no major issue with).
He was asked for his reaction to UEFA's charges, and refused to comment rather like Martin O'Neill did to Forbes McFall a few years ago. Both managers, in my opinion, could have answered the questions better, but I'm bloody sure we'll here no more about Big Eck's comments.
-
PS Regarding the Radio Scotland 90 Minutes broadcast, it's a wee bit like the 6-2 game - the opening 15 minutes are the best but there's a few gems after that as well.

Evening Bhoys, In London for the weekend so missed out on the majority of the other discussion about Celtic shirts, Merchandising etc...
BUT
I have been out "shopping" (being dragged around the shops) in London and I noticed that almost every sports shop had not only Celtic shirts, but loads of merchandise and accessories etc. and hardly any of that other teams stuff.
Was in the "Nike Town" shop (around 5 floors of Nike stuff, worth a visit!) and on the football floor it was great to see the hoops have a huge special section alongside the other big teams sponsored by Nike, Barca, Man Utd...
...The featured tops? ROONEY, RONALDINHO....DUBLIN!
I was in a shop called Soccer Scene, it seemed to be an independant store, not a chain, but I'm not too sure. Anyway, first thing you see as you walk in the door, a huge Celtic display, scarfs, mouse-mats, flags, posters, etc. and I noticed a few of those wee pro-star figures of Naka, two or three on the shelf.
I walked round the store and then came back 5mins later, decided to buy one and they were all gone. Asked the guy in the shop and he said, they are really popular, they sell alot of stuff to Japanease folk! Disapoined at no gettin my Mini-Naka but I was quite pleased at the same time.

Paul 67
You mention 'dogfight' for UEFA place, not sure what you call it if kilmarnock are in it also ?
Anyway the point is that Euro qualification, of any sort, next year is critical for the long term for Rangers.
Rangers stand to drop 11 points on their co efficient if they do not qualify. This will take them down to around the low 30s which is unlikely to allow them to be seeded in Qualification rounds for the CL the following year, if they make it ! This will go on to give major hurdles for success in Europe for any Rangers manager in the next few years.....not unlike faced by CFC when we habitually were unseeded from round 2 of euro comps onward in the 90s.
This next few weeks are vital, tomorrow it is cmon the Kilmarnock, and if they win and Hearts lose or draw then it might be ok to say a sporting 3-3 would be a good result on Sunday ?
Any thoughts ?
-
Paul67, re. the CQN POTY, your idea sounds like a good way to go...
Perhaps you could write an article to explain your nominationss and 'publicise' the vote? Also, if the site format allows, maybe providing an option for the voter to briefly explain their choice (logged with the vote) would be interesting - it could provide some material for an article or two once the vote is closed, and even thereafter.
Anyway, if you decide to pursue it, regardless of the format I think it's a worthwhile endeavour.
Oh aye, ignore my faux pas regarding players in July...hard week at work...I'd be concerned if Garry P wasn't encouraging the bhoys to even higher fitness levels come early July... ;-)

I had a listen to Graham Spiers on 90 minutes, the man is a true legend, and he deserves all the praise in the world for tackling a subject which will make him a lot of enemies.
I must add prevarication is my new favourite word :)
-
i have been away for a while and dont have much time, but i have to state that i feel the paul le guen scenario shouldnt scare the celtic family....... if we are strong(my belief is we will get stronger) then that should be enough, regardless of the other side....
another thing being, is this pre advocaat ???? the money leguen will have to spend ??? 5m pound players ???? who comes to scotland ??? FRENCH NON, polish yes !!! does he know any ???? any japanese ??? the way i see it, it has to be 19yr old african/french who will cost 3mill and have to adapt to our frenetic game .... he is bound to unearth a gem, but my belief is he will have it hard... in fact i confidently predict he will fail.......... FAIL ........ 10/3/6 THE BIG PREDICTION...... and a rational thought out one too......
-
I take it that the UEFA investigation was NOT the type of announcement that the Ibrox spin doctor was after?
Kilmarnock win tomorrow puts them into 3rd, above Rangers and Hibs.
I'm afraid I have to want a Celtic victory, we are building a future for our club. Let someone else cut the Rangers throat and allow them to miss out on the Champions League.
-
thismancraig
Rangers are doing a grand job of cutting their own throat!
-
I think it's time that all us Celtic supporters started to get behind WGS and show him support.
What better way to do this than chant his name like we did at Tannadice.
At the end of the day he is Celtic manager. It's so long ago before MON we would rejoicing at the fact we were on the verge of cliching the league and potential cup double.
So come on let's cut the guy some slack and show some appreciation.
Don't get me wrong i have been massivley disappointed with some of the performances this season, notably Clyde and Bratislava.
Who knows what WGS has got planned for the summer with regards signngs, but one thing is for sure the guy is trying to do his best for the club and i think it deserves some gratitude from us all.
At the end of the day he was replacing a legend and the best manager we have had since Jock Stein. A task not many managers out there would envy.

-
So am I on CQN!
-
thismancraig
I am not just talking about CL, missing out on Europe altogether is the real jackpot for ensuring 'generation of domination'. The UEFA cup is arguably easier to pick up cheap co efficient points and build momentum. Given the 'their failure is our success' nature of the rivalry to get them out of everything we might look to be balanced in our efforts in the last few league games of the season. ie Try hard against Rangers and ICT, and experiment a bit against Hibs, Hearts and Killie
-
Remember, they got Capone for tax evasion.
This could be another UEFA fudge.
On the other hand, if it's serious and they find Rangers guilty, where does it go from there?
The Rangers have been doing this for years, Decades. A century. The SFA has known this. And done....SFA.
It could be the investigation that pulls the whole rotten establishment (not just football eithr)down. Are we dealing with honourable men?
I posted here a while ago that we needed a truth commission. We needed Rangers to apologise for their exclusion from their society of a sizeable section of the Scottish community. They needed to acknowledge their sectarianism and repent.
Naively I thought that at least the people in power at Rangers understood the issues. They were quietly embarrassed, I thought, by their extremists. But cynical enough not to aslienate a source of income.
But the events of the last couple of days have opened even my 54 year old eyes. McMillan, McIntyre, Dingwall, stridently not surrendering. But silence from the club.
It's not cynicism, it's failure to understand that the level of fenian blood and obscenities on the Pope are FUNDAMENTALLY different from the poignancy, introspection and gentle, proud humanity of Fields of Athenry. Pick another anthem and say otherwise.
We may be at a crossroads in Scottish society. It will be glorious if football is the means by which a choice on that crossroads is made. Because football, rightly or wrongly, has been the vehicle we have chosen to assert our communal identity on a society which closed ranks against its Irish Catholic minority and still is in denial.
Is this a selective analysis? No it's an emotional, subjective one. We have our bigots too, and we have the structures in place to reinforce our bigotry. But it's not institutionalised. It can't be. We're not the institution, not the establishment.
Rangers, with a breath, could start the wind of change. We're sorry, we disown our bigotted past.
Would we be magnanimous enough to accept the apology?
-
Burnley78,
I know what you mean, the prospect of them missing out on Europe all together is magnificent. The only thing is, they'd then have plenty rest etc. Maybe the UEFA Cup is the ideal compromise, I really don't think it can be that money-spinning anymore.

What a weekend for sport on TV
Saturday
The Test Match Cricket is looking a bit damp, but then we have Italy Wales and Ireland Scotland at the Rugby, Deportivo apetiser before Valencia Madrid in the Spanish.
~Oh and a laugh at Rangers around 4.50pm too !
Sunday
Hibs v Celtic, Man U v Newcastle, Aresnal v Liverpool, England v France Rugby, Barcelona v Osasuna, Milan v Juventus, Inter v Samp.
I think it will be straight back from Easter Road for me, shame I ahev given up the beer and crisps for lent though !
-
Portpatrick Bhoy, I understand you might be wary of G.O.D., but you know where I am coming from now I bet.
The longer Zsa Zsa hangs about, the more likely it becomes.
Burnley78,
forgot about Kilmarnock, sorry.
After UEFA finish off Rangers perhaps we will get the international rugby body (sorry again, not idea what they are called, or if they even exist), to take up your challenge with the SRU.
The point you make on Rangers Euro coefficient is important.
Remember when they knocked Parma out of the CL qualifying round? That was them breaking through the threshold, they have been seeded in qualifying rounds ever since (same as us with Ajax).
It is hard to get your coefficient points up when you are unseeded, which is why very few teams ‘cross-over’ each season.
-
Burnley78
Beer AND crisps.
? One is enough for any man.
Give up the crisps mate. They're unhealthy anyway.

Paul and fellow CQNrs,
Mr Spiers seems to have done Scots journalism a great favour tonight. I haven't been able to hear him but here's hoping the BBC have the courage to continue what he has begun. Let Scotland's Secret Shame stand exposed for the world to see. As someone said, if it were Nigger, Paki or any other form of blood apart from Fenian (Catholic) it would have been outlawed years ago. Let's hope too that we have heard the last of any gloating about "soon there'll be no Protestants at all" and the like at Celtic Park. I know there is hardly any singing at the best of times now but I don't want us to go back to that sort of moronic stuff. We are better than that.
That's a claim not too many clubs can make. "Hello, hello " was being bellowed by the Dundee support last night.
-
Big Feck's "if only" comments today?
Absolutely priceless.
Never mind trailing us by 21 points, he's not even close to Hearts.
Not to mention Hibs and Kilmarnock snapping their heels.
-
Champions League
Can someone confirm that we want the semis to look this
Juve vs anyone
and Inter vs Barca.
That way as all these teams are in qualifying positions we in the money again.
-
Just took the advice of various CQNers tonight and listened to 90 minutes. Every bit as good as people say.
David Edgar squirms around trying his best to justify the B***y B**s and the lovely phrase F***** B******. Speirs just won't let him do it.
How can there be any political context to thousands of neanderthals singing that they are up to their knees in fenian blood. The closest the average R****** fan gets to politics is when he accidentally stumbles to page numbers lower than 30 in the Daily Record.
There is no political sub-text, there is no deeper meaning. These songs are about a groundless hatred of Catholicism.
You could hear that the other pundits were uncomfortable with the whole topic and even less comfortable with challenging the Rangers trust directly. This is understandable given the potential wrath of Murray's media lapdogs and the legions of doom. This makes Graeme Speirs stance even more admirable in my book. Any fears that his edge had been blunted by Murray can be dispelled straight away.
Keep telling it like it is Graeme.

Luca :- That one has no foundation what so ever, and believe me if it was I'd be the first to protest.
Chenaiseabird :- Can I take issue with your call for an apology, you can only apologise for things you are responsible for, and while the present set up at Rangers may be responsible for many faults they cannot be held responsible for any policy in force before they got control. An apology can only mean something if it comes from the person who caused offence, to take it to what to be fair is extremes, an apology from the descendants of those who caused offence 100 years ago to the descendants of those who suffered is meaningless. In case anyone thinks otherwise I'm not defending bigotry in any way, I'll totally condem the offensive phrases from tonights 90 minutes. I just don't feel an apology would mean anything.

Ghost of Bill HIcks 8.42 Your a kindredspirit,i've taken much the same action as yourself in terms of emailing UEFA and the SFA.
UEFA's definition of racism is what lit my fuse"the belief of the superiority of a particular race, religion or ethnic group"
In September UEFA decided for the first time to close a football ground for racist behavior. Steau Bucharesti's fans(monkey chants in the final minutes of a Champions league qualifier)
I have emailed the SFA in particular and as recently as last week had Derk Kirkwood SFA Security advisor tell me " it is therfore entirely for UEFA to deal with matters in relation to its own club competitions as it sees fit" As someone said "all it takes for evil to thrive is for good men to say nothing"

It cannot pan out that way, ideally :
Barca v Lyon (maybe more likely Milan)
Juve v Inter (most likely)
Milan are in second, ahead of Inter by 4 points (I think), 6 games to play. Milan derby still to be played and Milan have to play Roma & Juve. Inter have an easier run in.

Thank you Edward i was sure you would be able to put me right. Fantastic site Paul I have been with you since the Monday after Black Sunday. I tell all the Celtic fans I meet about this it.

Parkheadcomesalford, Speirs is acting with no shortage of courage.
Kojo, you might have to overcome your reticence for this one.
Historyreader, we want Juventus in the final, Inter are not in an automatic CL position.
Either Barca, Lyon or Milan will do from the other side of the draw.
St Anthony, I was at Fir Park that day and remember it well. Also remember the other games that month. I was behind the goal at Love St to see Charlie Nicholas score two late penalties to overcome St Mirren.
Ajax was quite an event also.
Luca, Edward is spot on.

Edward-
I heard that story about the socks recently as well-I had never noticed it before until it wqas pointed out Lorenzo Amoruso ALWAYS wore his socks with the tops turned down........

-
Edward,
I'm with you on the apology point to an extent. Apologising for the 100 year old signing policy is pointless at this stage given that it was binned over 15 years ago.
I do feel that David Murray could be a lot more convincing in tackling the problem though. I don't feel that he himself endorses the chants, I just feel that he is wary of tackling what is a pretty entrenched problem for fear of losing money.
He should be condemned for the orange strips and the tannoy music which are issues he has control over. He should also be condemned for not making it clear that sectarianism will not be tolerated at Ibrox. I feel he has paid lip service to this for the media but done very little of substance to change the atmosphere at the ground.
Fergus McCann put a lot of noses out of joint with his stance but because of him, and the attitudes of the supporters, Celtic Park is a changed place. He proved that it is possible and Murray should be able to follow his lead.
From your posts it is clear that you are not comfortable with the atmosphere at Ibrox. The UEFA investigation may give people like your good self a louder voice on the issue.

The signing of Maurice Johnstone had the same motivation (and usefulness) as Luis Figo to Real Madrid i.e. to destabilise and dominate their rivals for a generation.
-
As an side I remember Rangers stopped wearing the black & red socks for a while in the 1990's.
If it was up to their knees, would the lower bit of the sock not be the red part ?
-
Luca, many thanks and welcome, I didn't realise this was your first comment.
I keep hearing from people who first found us that week.
-
Edward-as far as I know even big Amaruso knew what the red tops meant and he always tucked them in.
-
and any other significance is coincedental.
If Murray thought it worthwhile and made business sense then the religious apartheid would remain.
-
FrankieBhoy
Dick Advocaat requested the team wore white socks as he didn't like or had a superstition about black.
I did see a poll on Rangers TV about whether it should be black or white. Black polled over 90%...'ra peepil have spoken' said Derek Ferguson.

Morning All,
Glad too see McManus signed on a new deal hopefully will bring him some stability......

For some reason I always preferred them in black socks, made them look more sinister I suppose.
I'd never heard of the red/knees thing before.

Ghost of Bill Hicks I forgot to congratulate you on your user name.
My fave Bill Hicks ,when he talked about having white skin and tan teeth.

Edward
I'm not entirely with you on this one. (Was it you on with an email on Radio Scotland, if it was good on you.)
Whether or not an apology is the best way ahead is an interesting debate. For too long we have had a degree of direct and also institutionalised sectarianism in Scottish football (leaving aside Scottish society at present).
Rangers Football have been in existence for 133 years and for about 90 of those years they operated a discriminatory employment policy and did not consider offering work to people due to their religious persausion.
The Club celebrates its long history, the present manager spoke about 130 years of dignity, the Club wears five stars on its badge to celebrate over 50 Championship wins many of which were gained while they did not employ professional footballers of one denomination of Christianity.
Scottish Football and its Association and Rangers Football have to acknowledge that truth.
One of the ways they could do that would be to apologise to all the professional footballers they discriminated against in the past for limiting their employment possibilities.
However the club continues to assert that "We are the people" and that's the same people that discriminated against catholics.
The club continues to flirt with orange strips, loyalist and fascist rhetoric, songs and gestures. No one from the Club has been dealt with for the singing from the official party at the San Siro.
David Murray is an equal opportunties employer but does he think that Rangers have a great, noble and dignified history or are there that parts of the Club's past official position that he does not want to touch with a barge pole?
It's time for him to come off the fence and challenge the bigots.
Perhaps he might try some humility.
Sorry can be the hardest word.

Graham Spiers is an intelligent and brave journalist. The proplems at RFC have to be addressed, this has gone on too long.
The public should know the truth.
I always hated the association with Celtic and the IRA, i remember being embarrased going to a Celtic Motherwell game, pre bunnet, and apologising to my Hungarian friend about the chanting, then Tommy Coyne scored the only goal of the game for Motherwell. Nightmare.
I hope UEFA ban them from next years competitions and PLG pulls out..
-
Someone called into Radio Clyde tonight ,to state that it was being reported that Magnier and McManus were about to invest large sums of money into Cetic.
He stated that a friend in Ireland had stated that it had been widely reported in the Irish newspapers today.
Does any one have any info on the likelyhood of this happening?

Read that rant in the FF. I could not help but laugh at the "Strathclyde Police lie for Celtic"!!
Does this include the one who was arrested at I**** recently, for shouting sectarian slogans!!

This Sunday at Easter Road our support will be under extreme scrutiny for the slightest sign of offensive chants. Beware.

If Rangers shouldn't have to apologise for their sectarian history because the individuals involved are long dead, by the same logic they really should remove the 5 stars from their shirts as well. How many years ago was their first championship won?
Rangers as an institution (2nd most important in Scotland) are guilty of past sectarianism. As an institution they should apologise.
-
Has anyone checked the photo of the R****** fans on the e-tims?
Can anyone confirm if that is that cuddly, loyalist terrorist, Johnny Adair?
-
Historyreader :- On what Mr Murray or others feel they should do that is up to them, I can't answer for them. You make a fair point about players denied employment due to discrimination being due an apology, I wouldn't argue, I feel though that the apology should come from those who were responsible at the time, not the present day board, that would render it meaningless.

Graham Spiers and Gerry McNee on STV slating rangers again.
A star man and McNee on form too.
They reckon big trouble for Rangers.
On the 5 stars...it kind of puts the 'first scottish team in the last 16 in focus' does it not? Change a competition's name and the record goes does it not?

My dear friend, Tiny Tim,

Alabama Celt, I'll be more than happy to hook up with you during your visit to Budapest. As you know it is the CIS Cup Final next Sunday so first and foremost I'll be looking for somewhere in Budapest to watch the match. When I can't see a match in a bar on a satellite TV channel, I revert to the internet and Channel 67. If the latter is the only option, you're welcome to join me.
Does anyone know who is screening the CIS Cup Final and which satellite channels it might be on?
There is a lot to see in Budapest as it is truly one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Check out the following site, it will give you some ideas about the possibilities:

Also you can obtain my email address by writing to Paul67 and thereafter contact me directly.
All the best, Ian.

Before anybody starts prevaricating..... we ARE NOT whiter than white....
This has not only drawn the eyes of Europe on to rangers but also Celtic....
As has been previously pointed out, the away support will be under intense scrutiny this Sunday......
They must realise who they are supporting and leave out ANY sectarian chanting...
And give the Republican songs a miss..
and not just this weekend......
There a loads of brilliant Celtic Songs .....
Why make ourselves a target......?
Hail ! Hail ! "The Celts Are Here......."

Why was there no action from UEFA when the FOD abused BOBO at the league cup semi final (where Bert scored the winner), at ibrox when he took a throw in, and at Parkhead in the 3-3 game where both he and MOMO were abused. And the Scottish Rugby Union are just as bad. They do not fly the Irish flag at murrayfield when the Irish are opponents nor have they ever played the Irish nationap anthem. What a pathetic, bigoted, country we live in.
I remember reading an article by Neil Drysdale in Scotland on Sunday about 1992 in which he cracked a joke along the lines of "How many catholics have performed at Murrayfield in the past ten years" the answer was Two- and one of them was the Pope.

Welcome bhoyhamilton and many thanks.
Fatherandbhoy, UEFA are only an association of the member associations. Their remit does not extend to domestic competitions.
Can I make a really controversial suggestion?
UEFA deserve credit for their actions this week, and (wait for it),
Strathclyde Police deserve credit for starting the ball rolling.
They took action at Celtic Park in November, and they arrested a fellow police officer at Ibrox two weeks ago for sectarian chanting.
Not so long ago such an action would never have seen the light of day.
We live in a changing Scotland....
-
In fact, let me put Strathclyde Police from 1985, when they charged thier horses into the back of Celtic fans leaving a game along Janefield St, with Strathclyde Police of 2006.
A remarkable contrast.
-
I posted the following comment in the morning but it got snagged right on the end of the discussion thread about Rangers selling their retail operation. Maybe my optimistic is getting the better of me but I think the UEFA move could be a watershed in the history of RFC.
***************************
I can't help thinking that the situation at Rangers simply underlines how far Celtic have come in recent years.
We are now clearly the best managed club in Scotland and streets ahead of our bitter rivals. I can recall when Celtic were scrambling to respond to the challenge laid down by Rangers in the nineties and wondering if we would ever regain the ascendency. Those were dark days and they culminated in us suffering the ridicule of escaping receivership by the skin of our teeth.
The man who rescued us from our plight had vision and guts. He saw immense potential in our club and he put his money where his mouth was. And it was not that he was one to shout his mouth off - in fact the contrast with David Murray was like chalk and cheese. It is reassuring for me that the current custodians of our club have that same sense of humility and dignity that Fergus McCann brought with him to Celtic. It is so far from the taunts and boasts that rang around our ears when Murray and Rangers enjoyed their superiority over us.
Fergus McCann may not have seen a huge amount of football success in the years he was at Celtic but he has endowed us with a legacy that will see him enshrined as a legend by future generations of Celtic supporters. Not only have his efforts, and those of his successors, allowed us to regain pride in our club but they have nurtured the principles and values that are at the very core of Celtic Football Club. These are the same principles and values that are at the heart of our identity and which govern our behaviour. Contrast Villareal with Seville.
Make no mistake, the day nears when someone of similar standing to McCann steps forward to rescue Rangers from the financial and moral morass (tangerine jerseys anyone?) in which they are embroiled. Regardless of what some of us think, not all Rangers supporters are tarred with a sectarian brush - an increasing number see the writing on the wall and they will soon move to pull their club kicking and squealling into the 21st Century. Rather than gloat over the demise of the ugly institution we despise, we should ready ourselves to applaud those who modernise our rivals and rid them off the scum that damages not only their name but the reputation of Scotland.
I for one dream of a day when the pride I have in my country - pride that has diminished through my chilhood years and into adulthood - is finally restored. It's time for Scottish leaders to grasp the nettle - if UEFA is willing to tackle the sectarian issue then what's stopping the people of Scotland?
-
I heard some of the Radio Scotland programme live, I've just listened on line to the whole programme.
Great radio, well done to the BBC, Jim Spence and of course Graham "the man" Spiers.

The reason that the racial abuse Bobo Balde is subjected to is not tackled by UEFA is that it happens in league or cup games that are under the jurisdiction of the sfa, hence why nothing is seriously done to address the problem. If it happens again please feel free to contact the anti-racist organisation Kick It Out (leon@kickitout.org) and they will take your concerns to the offending club and the sfa. It is quite simple : CONDEMN IN WRITING OR CONDONE IN SILENCE
ps anyone going to the game on Sunday please ensure only "Hail!Hail's!" be heard

Just a point about the police officer arrest.
He is not employed by Strathclyde Police. He was either Fife or Central Scotland I believe.
He was arrested by Strathclyde Police.

Fatherandboy 11.36,
The Soldier's Song is not played at Ireland rugby internationals outside of Ireland. The IRFU had Phil Coulter pen an Irish rugby anthem, 'Ireland's Call' so as not to offend protestant players from the north.
Tomorrow, they'll play the two anthems tomorrow.

Kingoh, I am pretty sure I did not say the arrested officer was from Strachclyde Police.

i suspect the worse r'gers will receive is a £10k fine from uefa but the can of worms is opening.celtic fans will have to be on their best behaviour in the coming weeks especially sunday where i'm sure brown and hately will have an extra ear on the stands.Never has it been so important to distance ourselves from the old firm tag.
three points are a must on sunday. we must take care of our own business the final league table will take care of itself but we have to wrap the title up as soon as possible
